it an approximate date. Eventually my family moved—first to Minnesota, where the fishing was better, then to Ohio, where it was worse. I went to college in the mid-1960s, which is a long story, and after graduation I headed to the Rocky Mountains, settling, or at least ending up, in Colorado. It was there that I made two of those rash decisions you can make when you’re young and at loose ends: I decided to learn how to flyfish for trout and to make my living as a writer. Both turned out to be easier said than done, but somehow worked out. I’ve now lived in Colorado for 45 years. Why here and not another fly-fishing mecca like Idaho or Wyoming? Hard to say, but I think it all started when I bought my first Colo rado fishing license in 1969. I asked the guy behind the counter at the hardware store when opening day was and he said, “There’s no opening day because there’s no closed season. You can go fishing any day you can stand to be out there.” I put the license in my w allet, walked out into a chilly early spring afternoon, and said to myself, “Son, you’ve come to the right place.” John Gierach’s new book, All Fishermen Are Liars, comes out April 15.

1½ lb corn bread, sliced ¹⁄³-inch thick 1 cup diced drycured (Spanishstyle) chorizo 8 oz Monterey Jack cheese, grated (about 2 cups)

1 (4.5-oz) can green chiles, drained 1 cup frozen corn 2 scallions, green parts only, thinly sliced 1 large plum tomato, thinly sliced 7 large eggs + Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 3½ cups milk 1. Arrange half the corn bread in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish in an even

layer, ﬁlling in gaps with crumbs. Scatter half the chorizo on top, followed by half the cheese. Spoon half the green chiles evenly across top, followed by half the corn. No. My mom had four kids, one with special needs. She had a fulltime job, and she still came home and made dinner for us every night, from scratch. It was amazing. I feel like I’m not tapping into my full potential, because I remember her being the ultimate multitasker, a supermom. And I don’t have kids! When did people start to notice your looks?

Not until college. I was like, “Wow, this is new! Why are boys looking at me?” It wasn’t until then that I paid attention to it. And looking back at my photos I still go, “What was I thinking with that makeup?” But I guess what you’re looking for is, when was that [facet of me] validated, and it was when L’Oréal signed me. We’re celebrating my 10th anniversary with L’Oréal next year; I don’t know if that makes me feel old or proud. [laughs] I remember when they were first interested in me as a beauty ambassador—I almost fainted. Me? That was an epiphany. But I won’t let it define me. My involvement in the world, my ties to my family, my curiosity, my appreciation of living in a global community—all of that is way more attractive! Do you worry about the fact that you’re—

Aging? No, no, no! I would never want to repeat my 20s. I welcome age with open arms because I want to evolve as a human being, gain more wisdom. I have so much more to do! And the only way you do that is with age. Is there a limited shelf life for beautiful women in entertainment?

I don’t think you can put the full blame on images. The responsibility lies in how you raise your child. I grew up surrounded by women: three sisters, nine aunts, 20 female cousins. They were my role models—smart, educated, ambitious, and very traditional at the same time. I saw my mom as a working woman who also wanted to raise children and take care of the home. Today it’s much harder to balance all of that, because everybody’s role models are celebrities. I didn’t grow up with that. Every time I speak to kids, they say, “I want to be famous like you.” And I reply, “Then you should become the doctor who cures cancer. If you’re extremely successful in any career, you’ll become famous. But fame should not be your goal.”
