Are the lead actors in American Hustle wearing actual ’70s clothes? –Jenny F., Oakland, Calif. A: No. Best Costume Design nominee Michael Wilkinson found that many vintage items weren’t in great condition, so he fashioned pieces like Amy Adams’s flashy dresses from scratch. “There’s something vulnerable about plummeting necklines and sheer fabrics,” he says. “Her character’s really going out on a limb.”

in Eliot Ness: The Rise and Fall of an American Hero, Douglas Perry paints a riveting portrait of the real man behind the Untouchables icon, highlighting ness’s legendary takedown of al capone and his later career in cleveland, where he busted racketeers and corrupt cops. But the book also reveals ness to be an alcoholic and serial adulterer who left crime fighting in disgrace after a drunkdriving accident. it’s a tragic true story more engrossing than the myth; read an excerpt at parade.com/ness.

As she gets ready to host the Academy Awards (tonight on ABC), Ellen DeGeneres shares her favorite movie memories wouldn’t be able to dance even if she wanted to. Inside a Los Angeles photo studio on a recent Friday afternoon, the famously footloose talk-show host has been rendered temporarily immobile, thanks to the reams of film wrapped around her body. While tracks by Pitbull and Whitney Houston blast from a nearby iPod, the most she can do is gently bob her head.

room you get a contact high.” She would know. The comedian previously hosted the Oscars in 2007, and while she earned an Emmy nomination for making the gig look deceptively easy, she had no desire to put herself through it again. So when asked to return this year, naturally she said no. “Everybody who works with me thought I was crazy,” she says. “But the person that lives with me— Portia—was on my side. She thought, ‘I don’t need to go through this, either. She’s gonna be stressed.’ ” And yet ultimately DeGeneres agreed. “I thought, ‘All right, let me scare myself again,’ ” she says. “It’s good to do something that scares you.” She insists she’s holding firm on one point, though: “I’m not going to be dancing. I dance on my show. I don’t think people need to see that every time I do anything.” As a kid watching Bob Hope and Johnny Carson host the Oscars on TV, DeGeneres never imagined she’d one day follow in their footsteps. Her first exposure to the bright lights of Hollywood came when she was about 6, when she took a cross-country train ride
“I love stories that are inspirational yet have a lot of heartache, because I think that’s what life is.” from her native New Orleans with her speech-therapist mom Betty, insurance-agent dad Elliott, and older brother Vance to tour Universal Studios and the Warner Bros. lot (where her talk show now films). “That was the only vacation my family took, and it was a big deal,” she recalls. “My family was, as most are, very impressed and enthralled by celebrities.” Much to their delight, the DeGeneres clan clocked a minor star sighting in TV actor Jerry Van Dyke. “But instead of my mother yelling out his name,” DeGeneres says with a laugh, “it was, ‘There’s Dick Van Dyke’s brother!’ Which made him feel wonderful, I’m sure.” With money tight in the De Generes household, going to the movies was a rare treat. Which is why she can still recall how she felt the first time the lights went down in the theater. “It was like discovering a whole other world,” she says.

“Very cool and magical.” A pair of films from her childhood, the 1966 true-life lion cub drama Born Free and 1968’s Best Picture winner Oliver!, particularly captured her imagination and helped ignite lifelong passions for animals and musicals. But it was Woody Allen and Steve Martin’s early work, including Take the Money and Run and The Jerk, that would inform DeGeneres’s trademark rambling, deadpan humor—long before she figured out comedy was her path. Holding down a series of odd jobs, from house painter to oyster shucker, in her late teens and early 20s, “I was kind of at a loss for my future,” she says. “I would go see their films, and even before I knew what I wanted to do, they were just seeping in. The seeds were planted.” wo ’80s movies, The World According to Garp and Out of Africa, released while DeGeneres was enjoying hard-earned success in stand-up, remain favorites she returns to often. “I love stories that are inspirational yet have a lot of heartache, because I think that’s what life is,” she says. “Life is filled with struggles and yet there’s always beauty, and that’s what I get from those films.” Although her own first starring movie vehicle, 1996’s Mr. Wrong, may not rank with those classics, she is proud of her supporting role as an enterpr ising realit y-show producer in EDtv, a 1999 comedy that starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. And why shouldn’t she be? She faced down some stiff

As soon as the shoot wraps, though, DeGeneres, 56, is on the move, doing a quick change back into her own jeans and navy cardigan, sending out a tender tweet wishing her actress wife, Portia de Rossi, a happy 41st birthday, and finally lighting on a sofa in the studio for a meeting with Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, executive producers of the 86th Academy Awards, which DeGeneres will host March 2 on ABC. As the producers go over their top-secret plans for everything from the Academy’s Wizard of Oz tribute to the presenters, DeGeneres is more intense than fans of her popular Emmy-winning chatfest, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, might expect. She listens closely, is vocal about tweaks she’d like to make, and, after p utting on her glasses, inspects s ketches for the design of this year’s stage, which she deems “gorgeous.” If she’s all business during the nearly hour-long powwow, who can blame her? Emceeing Hollywood’s biggest night is not for the faint of heart, as last year’s widely panned host, Seth MacFarlane, discovered. “It’s hard to not be nervous,” DeGeneres says—especially when you’re face-to-face with all those anxious A-list nominees. “There’s so many nerves in that

Rethinking the Big C
Is cancer always (really) cancer? Not necessarily.
Some cancerS shouldn’t be called cancer: that’s the controversial claim in a recent report from a group of top oncology experts. a team of physicians looked at certain early-stage cancers and concluded that some (like ductal carcinoma in situ, or Dcis, the earliest stage of breast cancer) are over-treated—even though the odds that they’ll develop into malignant tumors are low. The findings: “these types of precancers and early-stage cancers grow very slowly and may never kill, so doctors and patients should approach them differently,” explains study author laura esserman, m.D., coleader of the breast oncology program at the university of california san Francisco. experts believe that removing the “Big c” from diagnosis will not only alleviate patients’ fears,
but may also change their attitude toward treatment. in another study, esserman and her colleagues discovered that women diagnosed with Dcis were more likely to opt for nonsurgical options (like medication) when their condition was described as “abnormal cells” rather than “non-invasive cancer.” The treatment implications: “no matter what the name, earlystage cancer requires a personalized approach to treatment,” says ernest hawk, m.D., vice president of cancer prevention at the university of texas mD anderson cancer center. one way to learn more is through genomic testing, in which genes from the patient’s tumor are examined to predict how they’ll influence the tumor’s behavior (for example, how likely is it that invasive cancer will develop?). many oncologists already use genomic testing to guide treatment for metastatic cancers; now some are using them for precancerous lesions, too, in order to determine whether a watch-and-wait strategy is best. Breast oncologist ruth oratz, m.D., clinical professor of medicine at the new York university school of medicine, is among the early adopters of genomic testing—but even if your doctor does not use it, she says, a basic pathology report should be able to indicate aggressiveness. as esserman notes, “cancer is not an emergency. You have time to sort out your options.” —Camille Noe Pagán

How it all began… In 1956, the Jacuzzi brothers responded to a family member’s need for pain relieving hydrotherapy. Their ingenuity and knowledge of hydraulics led to the creation of a portable hydrotherapy pump. The J-300 would turn any normal bath tub into a relaxing, rejuvenating hydrotherapeutic spa. Jacuzzi quickly became a household name; known to this day for quality products and reliable pain relief.
Pain Relief- Just soaking is fine, but nothing makes a bath more therapeutic and pleasurable than hydrotherapy. Some offer either air jets, water jets or both. The best choice uses a combination of air AND water. Quality and reliability- Insist on a product that’s made in the USA, with an acrylic surface that is more durable and easier to clean than traditional gel-coat tubs. Practical features- Instead of getting a basic tub and then paying for options like Aromatherapy and ozone purification, look for one that offers these as standard features. A manufacturer you trust- Go with a trusted name and make sure the tub and the operating system has a limited lifetime warranty… that way you’ll get years of use and even increase the value of your home. Endorsements- Only consider tubs that are ETL or UL listed. Also look for a tub tested to IAPMO (Internat’l Assoc. of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials) standards and that’s USPC (Universal Spa Plumbing Code) Certified.

for the character. “Dory is just innocent, very childlike, and that’s fun to play,” DeGeneres says. “And I can relate to the short-term memory [loss]. I really do say, ‘Nice to meet you,’ at the same time people are saying, ‘Nice to see you again.’ ” Still, DeGeneres is content to interview movie stars on her show rather than be one herself. “I like the immediacy of television,” she says. “I love being able to do a monologue every day, make people laugh, give them things, and then go home [knowing] I’ve done something creative. “I think I did stand-up for too long,” she continues. “I was always in a hotel in a different city. I did that for like 15 years. That was enough for me.” But wouldn’t it be fun to follow in the footsteps of another daytime queen, Oprah, and take on the occasional dramatic, awards-bait role? “Okay, I’ll do that,” DeGeneres says. “Put that I’m available for small roles. If they give me the right one, I promise I’ll be nominated for an Oscar, if not win.” She pauses a beat. “You know what? I can tell people that on Oscar night.” Your move, Scorsese. Homeward Bound
One dedicated man hits the road in a 12-wheel rig on a mission to save precious pups By Peter Zheutlin around 7 p.m. The volunteers are drawn to Mahle’s mission, as well as to the man himself: “His heart is as big as a Volkswagen,” group coordinator Keith Remaly told me. The puppy snoozing in the kennel near my head is Audi. She’s on her way to the Dooley family of Connecticut. Teenagers Meagan and Lauren fell in love with Audi when they saw her photo on PetFinder.com, a database used by rescue groups such as Labs4Rescue, which arranged Audi’s adoption. Audi’s mother was found pregnant, living by a dumpster
in the small city of New Iberia, La. When two Labs4Rescue volunteers learned she was to be euthanized at the parish animal control facility, they rushed to get her; she delivered several of her 11 puppies in the backseat of their SUV. [Editor’s note: All 12 dogs have since made the trip north with Mahle.] But for every dog Mahle delivers, many more are euthanized. Southern shelters are overwhelmed by strays, says Keri Toth, president of the To make a donation, visit rescueroadtrips.com.
umane Society of CenH tral Louisiana, because spaying and neutering are not common practice. In rural a reas, backyard breeders produce more puppies than they can sell; many dogs are let go to fend for themselves. In Louisiana in 2010 (the most recent year for which statistics are available), 32 shelters reported taking in 69,540 dogs; 43,278 of them were put down, according to Maddie’s Fund, a nonprofit that tracks canine euthanasia statistics. At sunrise, Mahle fires up the truck and we push off for New York and Connecticut, where dozens of families are waiting in parking lots to welcome our passengers. At every stop, Mahle leaps out of the cab and shouts, “Hello! I’m Greg! Is everyone excited?” When we find the Dooleys, Mahle takes Audi from her crate and hands her to the girls; full of pent-up puppy energy, Audi squirms to lick their faces. For Audi, a long and difficult journey is ending as one filled with love begins. Mahle has witnessed this scene countless times, but it never gets old. As he rolls up to a fast-food restaurant in Putnam, Conn., the final stop of the day, some 50 people burst into applause. “A few weeks ago these dogs were going to die,” Mahle says. “Now watch. The truck doors open, light pours in, and each one goes into the arms of a loving family. This is heaven.”

I
t’s 2 a.m. and I’m trying unsuccessfully to sleep in the loft of a tractor trailer parked outside a motel in Allentown, Pa. A 12-week-old black lab is curled up inches from my face, and below us, 64 more dogs are resting peacefully in kennels stacked two or three high and secured along the truck’s walls. Our driver, Greg Mahle, is sound asleep in the middle of the floor. Mahle is used to sleeping in his truck: Twice a month he leaves his wife and home in Zanesville, Ohio, to drive a familiar route through the Deep South, making stops in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama to pick up dogs that have been removed from “death row” at high-kill shelters by local rescue groups. Then Mahle turns north toward New England, where there is higher demand for shelter dogs. Over the past nine years, Mahle has helped save tens of thousands of dogs. His transport service, Rescue Road Trips, just about breaks even. (A portion of adoption fees covers his costs.) But Mahle, who ran a family restaurant in his prior life, doesn’t do it for the money: “I turned 51 last year, and I am happier now than I have been in my whole life.” At designated spots along Mahle’s route, volunteers meet his rig for “walk-potty-snack” breaks. Last night as he pulled into the Comfort Inn parking lot, two dozen “Allentown Angels” had gathered, as they do every other Friday night
