Q: Did Tony Hale do any research to play the aide on Veep? —Dave C., Miami A: Hale, 43, says that before starting his Emmywinning turn as Gary, the hapless “bag man” who lugs essentials for vice president Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) on the HBO comedy (Sundays), he spoke with an “incredibly nice” ex-assistant to a D.C. pol (sorry, no names). “He had no life for three years, never saw his girlfriend,” says Hale. “That’s what you sign up for.”

Your book touches on romances with Woody Allen, Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, and Jack Nicholson. Many of my relationships have been fantasy-based. My concept of love wasn’t very real. I’ve made a friend out of Jack, which was never my intention when I first met him. My intention was he should be fascinated with me and want to date me. My future is to become more a friend than any kind of lover. You mention admiring Joan Rivers. Why? I’ve never seen anybody more hardworking and ambitious. Yet she and others have been hard on your fashion choices. Judging outfits is a great opportunity to trash something but still love it. I never exactly understood what I was supposed to do on red carpets. What are your thoughts on aging? There’s beauty in being older. You pick up things you never noticed before. I always was a slow developer, you know? Read a book excerpt at parade.com/keaton.
What does the Cinco de Mayo holiday commemorate? –
Ernesto M., San Jose, Calif. A: The occasion marks Mexico’s victory against invading French military forces on May 5, 1862. It’s celebrated more in the U.S. than in Mexico, and in many communities (especially L.A.) it has become a way to share Mexican-American culture with dishes like chalupas, mariachi music, and traditional dances. Toast the festivities with a sangria recipe from parade.com/sangria.
Mary Lynn Rajskub, back on 24
Q: It’s been four years since 24 went off the air. What’s the plot in 24: Live Another Day? —Steven G., Cincinnati A: In a new 12-episode story arc (starting May 5 on Fox), counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) resurfaces in London—an exile now at odds with his former ally Chloe, played by Mary Lynn Rajskub. “She has become very anti-government,” says Rajskub, 42. “That’s why I have this edgy, off-the-rails look and state of mind.”
The Voice taps Pharrell Williams.
Q: What does The Voice look for in a coach? —Shannon A., Austin A: Host and producer Carson Daly says the hit NBC show (Mondays and Tuesdays) looks for mentors who want to help singer-contestants get to “the A-level of their game. We’ve typically found that ‘good people’ make great coaches.” Look for these qualities in “Happy” hitmaker Pharrell Williams, 41, who will replace Cee Lo Green this fall. Meanwhile, season five finalist Caroline Pennell dishes on the current talent at parade.com/voice.

In weather reports about rivers flooding, we often hear the term “flood stage.” I can picture a river about to overflow, but what does, say, “20 feet above flood stage” mean? I can’t envision a wall of water 20 feet high. —S. D., Albuquerque
Every river has a flood stage at any given point along its banks. The term refers to the elevation
at which water above the usual level will create a hazard, cause damage, or interfere with daily life. If you live on the ground right next to a river, and it rises to two feet above flood stage in your area, that means two feet of water in your house. If the river is five feet above flood stage, you’ll get five feet of water. If you live on a nearby hill, your property might not be affected until the river rises 10 feet above flood stage, but even one foot above flood stage means something is flooded. That may be a road you need to evacuate if the river continues to rise, so people who
live near rivers need to be aware of all the relevant flood stage numbers in their communities. Do any vegetables grow on trees? —L. P., Menifee, Calif.
Not unless we stretch the definition of “grow on.” For example, certain mushrooms grow only on trees and logs; and plantains, cousins to bananas, are considered vegetables in some countries. The closest thing to a veggie growing on (or at least in) a tree is hearts of palm. Readers may be surprised to learn that the name of this sweet, tender delicacy is not just fanciful, but
a descriptive one. The long, slender vegetable is actually the innermost portion—the heart—of the stem of the palmetto tree, the state tree of Florida. And did you know that hearts of palm has another, less appealing name? It’s “swamp cabbage.”

THE BEST RELIEVER in baseball history knows a thing or two
about great saves, especially when he’s on the receiving end of one. Sitting in the living room of the Westchester County, N.Y., home he shares with his wife of 22 years, Clara, and their three sons—Mariano Jr., 20, Jafet, 17, and Jaziel, 11—Mariano “Mo” Rivera, 44, reflects on the circumstances that transported him from a tiny fishing village in Panama to one of baseball’s most distinguished careers. “Clara has been the foundation that the Lord chose to help me,” he says. “Perhaps I’d be in jail or maybe even dead, because the group I grew up around was an intense bunch. I had friends and relatives that chose the wrong path involving gangs and drugs. Clara lived in the same neighborhood. She helped take me out of that environment.” In his book, The Closer, which is excerpted here, Rivera details how he and his friends were so poor they crafted gloves out of cardboard. His father needed to haul 100 tons of fish to earn just $35, a life that Mariano desperately wanted to avoid. He did—but none of his success would have been possible, says the MONTH MAY 00,4,2012 2014| |00 9

MO’s roots Clockwise from above: Rivera and Clara after tying the knot in their Panama hometown in 1991; waiting with his family for his flight to Tampa for spring training in 1990 (the first plane ride of his life); winding up as a minorleaguer in Fort Lauderdale in 1992.
deeply spiritual Rivera, without his profound belief in God, which he says guided his career and will now define his retirement. “Yes, I could go another few years in the big leagues, but there are other things more important than baseball,” says Rivera. “I wanted to give back.” He has moved from the cathedral of Yankee Stadium to the humbler confines of Refugio de Esperanza (Refuge of Hope), a small evangelical Christian church in New Rochelle, N.Y., that he founded, then restored, with Clara, 43, who serves as pastor. Together they’re fulfilling a new dream. “Baseball was just the avenue that the Lord used so I can provide for my family,” says Rivera. “I believe that He brought me here to touch people’s lives. That’s the real job.” After being invited to play on one of Panama’s top adult teams, the 20-year-old Rivera attracts the attention of a Yankee scout in 1990.

Herb Raybourn sits in the kitchen of our two-room cement home. The house has a tin roof and a
couple of chickens out back and sits on a hill in Puerto Caimito, the poor little Panamanian fishing village where I’ve lived my whole life. My parents sleep in one room, and the kids, all four of us, sleep in the other. I play baseball here. I play all kinds of games, and my favorite is the one where we get a piece of cardboard and cut out three holes in it, and string it up between two sticks in the sand. Then we stand back about 20 feet and see who can get the most rocks through the holes. My aim is good. Herb puts some papers on the table. “ The New York Yankees would like to sign you to a contract and can offer you $2,000,” Herb says. “We think you are a young man with a bright future.” I am making $50 a week working on my father’s commercial fishing boat. Herb says, “We’re going to send you right to Tampa for spring training.”

I believe I’m supposed to take this as good news, but I have never heard of Tampa. The extent of my knowledge of the Major Leagues—las Grandes Ligas—is close to nothing. I am scared. I know how to play ball, but have no idea how I will measure compared to other players. Who else has made this transition, from a Panamanian fishing boat to the New York Yankees?
In the spring of 1993, Rivera joins the Yankees’ Greensboro, N.C., minor league team. That year, he and Clara learn they’re expecting.

I respected what she had to say politically, though I didn’t agree with some of it, and she was the same with me. You and your husband are expecting a baby via surrogate. What has that experience been like? The fertility process is a difficult journey, but I’ve got a great mate who’s really passionate. It’s exciting and scary, but we’re ready. Jeffrey will love being a big brother— until the baby poops! You’ve lost an amazing 51 pounds—congratulations!

I’m a type 2 diabetic, and my mom passed away at 41 due to diabetic complications. I was told I would die if I didn’t change my life. You have to have a new relationship with food and you have to start liking exercise. I do Zumba three times a week and exercises at home with my son, who thinks we’re playing. How do you spend Sundays? I do my prayer and meditation and get us all ready for church. After that, Jeffrey has basketball practice and we sit on those hard bleachers and watch him! I do my homework for The View, and Sal cooks the Sunday meal; he makes a great kale salad. He says he prayed to God for a woman who could cook, and I prayed for a man who could cook. I won! What were some of your early jobs? I sold Avon and worked in the catalog return department at Sears. I was a telemarketer and then a legal secretary for a long time. I used to sit in the break room of every job I had and dream about being in [show] business. I still feel like I’m going to wake up and there will be a lawyer standing over me going, “Why haven’t you filed those documents? Stop daydreaming!”

he women of ABC’s The View are used to on-air debates, but when the cameras stop rolling, so does the arguing. “If there’s something bothering us, we’ll go into each other’s dressing rooms and talk,” says cohost Sherri Shepherd, 47. “We’re not the Real Housewives over here.” Shepherd, who lives in New Jersey with her husband, Lamar “Sal” Sally, and 9-year-old son, Jeffrey, tells Erin Hill about family time, her shrinking waistline, and the changes brewing at her highly rated talk show.

In 1996, Rivera earns his first of five World Series rings. The following season, he discovers his unhittable cut fastball. I am playing catch with Ramiro Mendoza a couple of hours before the game. I catch Ramiro’s throw and fire it back. It seems to surprise him. “Hey, stop playing around,” Ramiro says. “ W hat are you talking about?” “I’m talking about the ball you just threw. It almost hit me.” I throw it to him again and the same thing happens. It breaks about a foot right when it is on top of him, and again he misses it completely. It’s as if the ball has a mind all its own, because it keeps moving late, on a horizontal plane. The more I throw this new pitch, the more I command it. I am starting to throw it for strikes. It’s as if it’s dropped straight from the heavens, as if I were on my father’s boat and a million pounds of fish just swam into our nets. Why does this happen? I don’t know the answers, except to say that the Lord must’ve had a plan. And it is some plan. All it does is change my whole career.

In game seven of the 2001 World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, a devastated Rivera fails to get the save. After I shower and change, I find Clara outside the clubhouse. I take her hand and we walk to the bus. I have tears in my eyes. The guys on the team are there for me, but they are giving me space. We get to the airport and get on the charter. The tears do not stop for the whole trip across country. Clara is right next to me, as she has been since I was a boy. Even in my sorrow, I am so thankful for my wife and her tender, loving heart. We land in New York and drive home, still barely saying a word. I walk upstairs to the master bedroom. As I approach the room, I see something on the floor. I bend down and pick it up. It is a Little League trophy. It belongs to Mariano Jr., who has just turned 8. I hold it close, not smiling but feeling something much deeper. On Sept. 26, 2013, at age 43, he takes the mound for the last time at Yankee Stadium, retiring with a record 652 saves. We are there ‌ the 1,115th and final appearance of my New York Yankees career. The gate opens and I make my last run in from the pen, the crowd standing and cheering. I do my best not to think about the weight

of the moment. I quickly retire two batters, walk to the dugout, and head into the trainer’s room. I ask Mark Littlefield, the trainer, to work on my arm when Andy Pettitte walks in. “What are you doing here?” I ask. “[Derek] Jeter and I want to come get you before you finish the ninth. What do you think?” “Don’t do that,” I say. “Please. I want to finish the game. That’s my job.” “Okay,” Andy says and off he goes. I get off the bench and go out on the mound. I take a deep breath, hoping I can finish, when I see Andy and Derek walking toward the mound. They are smiling and I am smiling, too. Andy holds out his left hand and I put the ball in it. He wraps his arms around me, I put mine around him and the dam finally bursts, the finality of it descending on me. Andy holds the back of my head and the sobs keep coming, deep heaves of joy and sadness. When the game ends, I sit in the dugout by myself. I don’t want to leave but I am ready. I go back to the mound one more time, toe the rubber, then bend down and scoop up a handful of dirt. It makes sense to me. I started playing in dirt, so I might as well finish playing in dirt, the perfect keepsake for a simple man. Copyright © 2014 by Mariano Rivera.
