Q

What’s special about the new Blu-ray/ DVD of It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World? –Tom D., New York City

Christina Ricci as Lizzie Borden

Q: What does Lizzie Borden’s 1893 trial say about the prevailing views of women then? —Pamela K., Beverly Hills A: Plenty, says Christina Ricci, 33, who plays the infamous double-murder defendant in Lifetime’s Lizzie Borden Took an Ax (Jan. 25.) ”She was a product of her time,” Ricci says. “Nobody would find her guilty because people weren’t willing to accept that a woman was capable of this kind of crime.”

Chris Pine plays Jack Ryan.

Q: Will there be any more Jack Ryan novels now that Tom Clancy has died? —Dave R., Arlington, Va. A: Sorry, that’s classified. Not really, but while reps for Clancy’s publisher have said they “hope” the CIA alum Ryan character “can live on” in more books, they’re mum on who would write them. Meantime, Chris Pine stars in the franchise reboot Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, now in theaters.

WALTER SCOTT ASKS...

HARRY CONNICK JR.

Fox’s American Idol has tapped the Grammy winner, 46, as a season 13 judge. What’s your take on your fellow judges, Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez? We can disagree about things and it’s never ugly. A lot of fans disliked the drama last year between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey. Quite frankly, I think the chemistry may have been a little bit off. I’m a big fan of everybody who was on that panel, but it’s like being with someone in a relationship—why do they click with you? It’s hard to put a finger on it. What’s life like with a wife and three daughters? I see parents with young boys and think, man, I wouldn’t know what to do with one of those! I feel so comfortable being around girls. What did a New Orleans upbringing give you? It’s how I talk, how I eat. It’s the music I love. Do you have a question for Walter When did you first play piano? I started plunkScott? Post it at facebook ing notes out at around .com/parademag. 3 and I haven’t stopped.

A: During its initial runs in theaters, this 1963 farce about a stash of stolen cash got trimmed from over three hours to roughly two and a half. The camera negatives for the cut shots and scenes were then lost or scrapped. As part of a new edition out Jan. 21, Criterion has pieced virtually all of the cut footage back together as part of a huge package of extras. For more on how, go to parade.com/mad. Jonathan Winters and Phil Silvers get Mad.

Michelle Monaghan

Q: I’ve seen Michelle Monaghan in lots of movies but not on TV since Boston Public. Why did she do True Detective on HBO? —Linnea A., Princeton, N.J. A: Big names, short commitment. Monaghan, 37, worked about six months to film a limited-run eightepisode arc as the wife of a Louisiana detective (Woody Harrelson) who finds herself drawn to his moody partner (Matthew McConaughey). Says Monaghan, “It was a really nice way to work with HBO but not for the long haul.”

Take your time with this one, readers. The answer (which appears at the end of the column) requires exercising your brainpower in an uncommon way. I was stunned when I read your column about recurring dreams with a common theme: You’re back in school, haven’t been to class in weeks, can’t figure out where to go or what to do next, etc. [Oct. 27, 2013]. I have this same dream and feel so much better to know that others have it, too!

Hundreds of readers wrote to express their shock that this dream is not unique to them. (“I almost fell off my chair when I read your column this morning!” was a typical email.) Many sent their own versions of it and said they’d like to see what others readers wrote, so we’re going to publish many of them online this week, beginning tomorrow. More will appear each day. here’s a rare kinship that exists among Olympians. Rarer still is the bond among some of America’s most beloved champions. In anticipation of the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, Parade gathered figure skating superstars Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton, and Kristi Yamaguchi, along with legendary shorttrack speed skater Apolo Ohno, for a candid rink-side chat in New York City’s Central Park. Each athlete has changed the face of skating in a unique way (in 1992 Yamaguchi was the first Asian-American woman to win a gold medal, for example; Hamilton brought a new level of athleticism to his sport). And all four have successfully gone on to second acts, having navigated the rocky transition to “regular life.” Ohno, who recently retired as the most decorated U.S. Winter Olympian of all time with eight medals (from the 2002, 2006, and 2010 Games), brought his competitive streak to the stage on Dancing With the Stars. Yamaguchi, also a Dancing alum, is now raising two young daughters with husband and former Olympic hockey player Bret Hedican. Hamill, who struggled with depression after winning her gold in 1976, runs a figure skating camp for adults in Phoenix. Perhaps no one has shown more resilience than 1984 champ Hamilton, now a dad and author, who makes JANUARY 19, 2014 | 7

d Apolo Ohno In 2010, Ohno’s famous explosive acceleration clinched the final two Olympic medals of his career, when he sailed from the back of the pack into third place in the last lap of both the 1,000-meter event and the 5,000-meter relay.

You’ll all be spectators of the Games this year. How does it feel to be on the other side?

Kristi Yamaguchi Y g hi At the 1992 Games, Yamaguchi opened her spellbinding long program with her favorite trick, the dizzying triple lutz–triple toe jump sequence.

Apolo does before he races? He yawns to relax himself. To watch this explosive power, and to see that yawn before, it’s really cool. I met Kristi when she was about 8 years yea old. Apolo raises a good point. It’s been a long time since the U.S. produced a figure skating superstar, other than Michelle Kwan. Is figure skating not as popular as it once was?

There used to be a broad level of personality. It’s a show-off sport. Everybody could bring their own vision. But now [because of the current scoring system, which was introduced in 2004] skating is very scientific and HAMILTON:

By acting fast you can receive a 1944 Walking Liberty Half-Dollar for just $15.49 — quite a value versus the regular price of $44.95 (plus $2.00 shipping and service). This is the first coin in a collection of historic silver half-dollars. In 1964, the U.S. Mint stopped issuing all silver coins for circulation. Collectors have been hoarding these desirable coins for more than a half-century. With the price of silver having skyrocketed, these precious silver half-dollars are certain to be more coveted than ever!

DON’T DELAY!

How can we afford to offer this 1944 Walking Liberty Half-Dollar for such a deep discount? The reason is simple, and good business. We know that owning just one rare and beautiful Walking Liberty Half-Dollar is enough to convince many people to purchase additional silver coins from us. Should you not claim your 1944 Walking Liberty Half-Dollar, you may never see this opportunity again. Reply today!

S Speaking of numbers, what percentage of being w an Olympic champion would a yyou attribute to hard work vversus natural talent?

I think it’s drive o talent for sure. I was not over the quickest learner. When I th was 7, my mom said, “You w need to work harder because n Dorothy Hamill eeveryone else is learning “America’s Sweetheart” ffaster than you.” Skating delivered a nearly flawless taught me to have a work ta performance at the 1976 Olympics, which included, ethic—in order to improve, of course, her trademark you have to put the time in. Hamill Camel—a standing spin that whirls into a sit spin. HAMILTON: It’s about being willing to do something that somebody else isn’t. It’s showing up on days you don’t want to. It’s getting through an injury. HAMILL: It was about being the first one on the ice in the morning and the last one off. YAMAGUCHI: Y

What was the most grueling part of training?

I don’t mind grueling training. I like being able to do a workout that no one else can finish. I like being the last one standing. HAMILTON: I hated compulsory figures. I hated tracing circles for hours and hours. I wasn’t good at them when I was a kid. But the reason I won the gold was because of compulsory figures. It’s about eliminating your weaknesses, and knowing, “This has to be fixed.” OHNO:

What else have you learned from competing?

Before success, you’re going to have failures. I’d have a bad competition, but it didn’t crush me. I knew, “This is what I need to go back and work on or change.” YAMAGUCHI:

In life, I have struggled with knowing that I’ll never be a world-class anything again. So I’ve tried to find a way to share the thing that I’m still most passionate about, ice-skating. [Hamill opened the Dorothy Hamill Figure Skating Fantasy Camp in 2009.] I’m frustrated that I’ve never found another passion. If somebody said, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”— I’m still trying to figure that out. OHNO: The transition from Olympic athlete to “What next?” is probably the single most difficult thing for any athlete, and it’s ongoing. You are the best at your sport, but it’s not like you’re going to leave short-track speed skating and be the best at business. What has helped me is applying the attributes that made me sucHAMILL:

cessful as an athlete to obstacles in normal life. My motto is, “Try to live with zero regrets.” Some of you are parents now. Has that changed your perspective on all that your parents did for you?

I left home at 13. I have two sons. I’m not capable of letting them leave because I feel like I missed that time with my parents. My mother died when I was 19. It’s like, “No, I’m not going to sacrifice that time.” YAMAGUCHI: My dad still is like, “What’s that? A jump or a spin?” I can’t help him if he doesn’t know that! But to have had my parents’ support—where they said, “Hey, if that’s your passion, we’ll support it”—it’s a huge sacrifice for everyone. It’s our choice, but our families are the ones who give up a lot. HAMILTON:

How often do you skate today?

I skate when I can, more in the summer. But actually, I just bought a road bike. I think that that’s going to be something I really love. YAMAGUCHI: Like Dorothy, I still love to skate, but making time to get to the rink is the hard thing. HAMILL:

Life of Pie A flaky crust and luscious filling take center stage as two movie stars get schooled in the art of baking By Joyce Maynard

I

n the summer of 2012, I traveled to a town in Massachusetts to teach actors Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet how to make a pie. I had my favorite wood-handled pastry blender and my mother’s rolling pin packed in my suitcase along with my lucky apron. Maybe I’d never star in a movie, but my pie would. A few years back I wrote a novel called Labor Day, about a convict on the run who hides out in the house of a lonely single mother with a 13-year-old son. When I thought about how to get across the tender side of this man, Frank, a picture came to mind. He’d show the boy, Henry, and his mother, Adele, with whom he’s falling in love, the art of pie making. I bake a good pie myself— crust in particular. So when I got to the part in my novel where Frank explains how it’s done, his instructions are the ones I always give: Add only the bare minimum of cold water and don’t overhandle the dough. Roll out on wax paper. … Above all else, relax. We’re talking pie, not soufflé. My pie-teaching days began the summer my mother—a great baker herself—was dying of cancer. Nearly every day over those months, as friends came by to see her, I baked a pie. After her death, I started teach-

ing others, using her method. Homemade pie is a gift of love. You don’t need fancy equipment or expensive ingredients. If you’re lucky, you pick the fruit, or someone gives it to you. In fact—getting back to Labor Day—that’s how Frank comes by his pie filling: A neighbor stops by with a bucket of overripe peaches. “I’ll have to throw these out,” Adele says to Frank. “I have a better idea,” he tells her, reaching for a bowl. Not long after Labor Day was published, the director Jason Reitman called to say he wanted to make my novel into a movie.

And would I teach the actor playing Frank to make the pie? Months passed before I got the news that Kate Winslet had been cast to play Adele, with Josh Brolin in the role of Frank. When I arrived in Shelburne Falls, Mass., the ingredients for the lesson had all been laid out in a local resident’s kitchen: bowls of fresh peaches, flour, sugar, salt. As Frank explains in my book, Crisco makes a flakier crust, but butter gives more flavor. So we had both on hand. Kate Winslet showed up first, even though she wouldn’t be

the primary baker in the film; she said she’d never made a pie and wanted to learn how. But my focus that day would be on the man who had to look, onscreen, as if he had complete command of pie crust. I knew Josh Brolin only from movies where he played the tough guy. But that day, rolling out the dough, he talked about his mother— who’d died young, like mine—and about her baking. You could tell he was a natural the moment he started peeling those peaches, using a straight-blade knife, not a parer, and handling it like a pro. We made three pies that afternoon and ate them on the spot. Josh told me later that he made a pie almost every day that summer—same as I had, so many summers earlier, in my mother’s kitchen. When I saw the movie with my two sons, and we got to the pie scene, my older son grabbed my arm. “That’s just how you do it, Mom,” he said. In fact, it’s just how my mother did it. This may be why I always cry when I get to that part in the movie. I think of her and I like to imagine that when people come home from seeing Labor Day, they too may feel inspired to bake a pie. Labor Day will be in theaters Jan. 31.

Bose Solo ®

TV sound system

It was like a sitcom. I’d turn up the TV volume to hear the dialogue. And he’d turn it down because the music and sound effects were too loud. Over and over. What’s funny is how quickly that problem disappears when you have

clearly better

TV sound.

Flat-screen TVs are made for great picture, not great sound. The Bose Solo TV sound system is an easy way to solve the problem. Thanks to proprietary digital signal processing, you’ll hear more of the dialogue, music and sound effects you’ve been missing — without needing to constantly adjust the volume on your remote. Yet this system is small enough to fit neatly underneath your TV* and connects with a single cable. The price is $399.95, or you can make 12 easy payments of $33.33 with no interest charges from Bose.** Call now to experience the Solo TV sound system risk-free for 90 days with free shipping and, if you’re not fully satisfied, free return shipping. We’re that sure you’ll agree that better sound simply makes for better TV.

Special 90-day, risk-free audition.
