What To Look for in a New Truck T

he vast array of truck models on the market can make finding the perfect vehicle a daunting task. Before visiting a dealership, you've got to ask yourself a few questions. What kind of engine do you want? Should the truck have a cab that comfortably seats four people? What kind of materials will you be hauling? Are you looking for a luxury vehicle, or would you prefer something that simply suits hard labor? Should the bed of the truck be long, wide, or short? Ultimately, these are questions that a buyer absolutely must consider before he even enters a truck dealership. And, fortunately for truck buyers, most dealerships will be able to deliver a truck that meets your exact specifications — with the perfect combination of engine, cabin and bed to do the jobs you have in mind. Other factors should also come to mind when thinking about what to look for in a new truck. First, the truck should be comfortable to drive. Second, you should feel comfortable driving the vehicle. Third, you should love the look of the truck. Fourth, and most important, the truck should be manufactured by a safe and reliable company that offers its buyers a good warranty.

determine what you can carry, but it also changes how the truck looks and drives. Long beds look more like work trucks, while short and medium lengths look sportier. And while long beds are the best for hauling bulky cargo, they're the hardest to fit into a parking lot.

LUXURIES

Here's a closer look at what to look for in a new truck:

ENGINES The engine is the heart of your truck, and it's the choice that will most dramatically affect the performance, capability and personality of the truck you buy. There are a lot more engine choice than there are trucks, and it's not as simple as choosing between V6 and V8 models. If you're looking for efficiency, a V6 engine is your best bet because it offers basic performance along with good gas mileage, all for a low price. Most fullsize and all mid-size pickups are available with a V6. You could also consider one of General Motors' hybrid pickups, like the GMC Sierra Hybrid, which adds electric motors that give

Page 12 Sunday, April 25, 2010 The Southern Illinoisan

you the grunt of a V8 with the efficiency of a much smaller engine. The most popular type of truck engine is the traditional gasoline V8, and each brand will usually offer several options in V8 power. If possible, you should drive a truck with each of the different engines to compare them one after another. Each V8 will feel and sound dramatically different, so you need to pick one that matches your personal preferences. Note how each V8 accelerates, both from a standing stop and at passing speeds on the highway. Finally, you've got to weigh whether you want a diesel engine. Today's diesels are quieter and more refined than ever before, but they're still a little louder and rougher sounding than conventional gas

engines. They've got a lot of advantages, though, including the ability to generate lots of torque for towing and a better reputation for longevity. A diesel is often the most expensive engine choice, but it also offers great capability and a better resale value.

CABIN Different brands use different buzzwords to describe their cabs, but they can generally fall into three categories: Regular cabs, with two doors and seating for three, are the most affordable models that offer the least interior space. The next step up is a cabin with a small back seat. It will usually have two full-size doors in front and a couple of smaller, often rearopening doors in back to access the back seat.

The biggest and most expensive choice is a true four-door truck, which has full-size front and back seats. While the initial cost will be more, many people like this type of truck because it's like buying two vehicles in one: a big SUV for the family, and a pickup truck for doing hard work.

BED Truck beds come in all shapes and sizes, so it's important to pick one that meets the requirements of the job you're doing. If you frequently haul full-size, 4-by-8-foot sheets of drywall or plywood, then a long bed may be your only option. If you use it for hauling smaller things, like bags of concrete or landscaping materials, then a short bed may suffice. Not only does the bed

There was a time when pickups were all about work, but today's trucks can now be outfitted like luxury cars. The GMC Denali line is a great example. In Denali trim, the Sierra comes with leather seats and all sorts of electronic gadgets that make it feel more like a Cadillac than a GMC. Other brands offer similar luxury packages, most notably Ford with its upscale Lariat trim. If you really want a luxury truck, look for available features like a navigation system, special leather trim, and perhaps even a built-in DVD player for the back seat. Overall, many truck makers offer consumers standard features that are available in most truck models. Knowing what additional features you want in a truck is most important when it's time to shop. In the end, the perfect truck can be found — one that matches your lifestyle as much as your need to do a job.

HILL ASSIST FEATURE New for 2011 and makes it easier to pull away on a slope or grade greater than five degrees by keeping the vehicle from rolling backward. When Hill Assist Feature is activated, the vehicle remains stationary on the slope for up to two seconds after the driver releases the brake petal. The brakes are automatically released once the engine has developed sufficient power to prevent the vehicle from rolling down the slope. Hill Assist Feature will not operate when the parking brake is engaged.

Reasons To Keep Your Car's Service Current N

ext to buying a home, a car is one of the biggest purchases you will make in your lifetime. Considering how it's such a big investment — and one that's so important to your dayto-day life — it's important to make sure your car will last as long as possible. Keeping your vehicle's service current is is the best way to do that. For starters, it will save you a lot of money over time. These days everyone is looking for ways to save, and paying attention to the needs of your car is one way to do it. Getting regular oil changes, rotating tires, and occasional tuneups are all part of maintaining a car. While it's true that an oil change can cost you anywhere between $10 and $50, having this done every 3,000-5,000 miles will keep your car running better. In the long run, this saves a lot of money because it keeps your engine running longer and stronger. Without keeping up with the basic service, bigger problems can arise that will cost much more than the price of a few oil changes, tire rotations or tune-ups. Another reason to stay on top of your car's service is that a wellmaintained car will run

more efficiently. This will allow your engine to run smoother and require fewer trips to the gas station to fill up, which in turn will save you money. In addition, maintaining your car and servicing it regularly will keep you safer. Regularly checking your tire pressure is important for many reasons. Car tires with too low of pressure can wear the tires out and cause the tread to be ruined. Tires that have too much pressure have the risk of potential blowouts, which can be dangerous and even fatal. Likewise, brakes should be checked once

Page 36 Sunday, April 25, 2010 The Southern Illinoisan

or twice a year to make sure they are working properly, or checked if you notice anything unusual about them, such as squealing, grinding, or the need to push on the brakes harder than normal. Obviously, not having properly working brakes on your car is dangerous. Furthermore, regularly servicing your car will make it worth more if or when you decide to sell it or trade it in. By doing simple tasks like keeping the inside of the car clean and washing it frequently, you will keep your car looking nicer and improve its value. Cleaning the underside

of your car is important, especially during the winter months in cold climates, to prevent snow and sludge from corroding the parts. A car that has been regularly serviced, maintained, and looks great on the inside and outside will get you more money when you decide to sell it. A few people even get more money for their car than they originally paid for it, just because they have taken such good care of it. How do you know when it's time to do the maintenance? If you still have your car's owner's manual, it will contain a treasure trove of information about not

only when the maintenance is required, but also what types of fluids your car is designed to use. You should do your best to follow the instructions precisely because it will keep your car running properly. Failing to follow the instructions could even void your

car's warranty. If you don't have the owner's manual — or would be more comfortable having a professional look it over — then you could get the advice from a reputable auto mechanic. These professionals, whether at car dealerships or independent repair shops, will be able to look up information about your car and examine it to see what kind of maintenance you need. Buying a car is part of the American dream. It's a big purchase that should not be taken lightly. Maintaining and servicing your car regularly is imperative and necessary to keep your car in tip-top shape. Doing so will save you money, keep you safer, and make it worth more in the long run. Take pride in your car keep its service current. It will only help you in the long run.
