Community Impact Programs Holiday Helping Hand Program

The Holiday Helping Hand is a partnership of community businesses/organizations and United Way of Southern Illinois. This program provides support for individuals, seniors, children and families who might otherwise have little or nothing for the holidays, but is limited each year by the number of participating businesses. 100% of your gift to the Holiday Helping Hand program goes to clients; United Way will not recoup any expenses from your gift.

We were contacted by the social worker from the hospital about a frail elderly client that was in need of Home Delivered Meals so she could be discharged from the hospital.

Williamson Co. Programs on Aging provided hot nutritious noon meals, which allowed the client to remain independent in her own home.

The victim of ‘domestic violence, a mother and her child had to relocate to the Marion area.

We referred her to the Lighthouse Shelter. Once she secured employment, we assisted her with funds for rent, food from the pantry & some furniture. She has since returned, with her child, to volunteer at the Marion Ministerial Alliance.

It was the CASA advocate’ who had built a rapport with her CASA child – a six year old boy placed in relative care.

The child confided in the CASA advocate that he was being left daily in the care of his teenage cousin who was physically abusing him. CASA reported this and he was immediately removed from the relative’s home to a safe environment.

At 18 months old, Sarah sustained a severe head injury resulting in developmental, speech and physical impairments. She was referred to receive intensive rehabilitation at TLC of Southern Illinois. TLC, through United Way donations, purchased protective headgear, body brace, and eye patches for her. She has learned to walk and talk again, is now 8 years old, attends regular school, and continues to receive therapy.

Jane was a withdrawn young lady with an inferiority complex. Her mother tried to get her involved in school activities, but Jane was not athletic, and just couldn’t find her niche. She needed an outlet…something to call her own. Jane not only found herself in Girl Scouts, she flourished! She has since taken the lead and earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award. “It took a year and half for this transformation to occur, but watching it unfold has been one of the most rewarding things I, as a leader, could ever be a part of and witness.”

Donors have several options available when wishing to contribute to the United Way. We at the United Way of Southern Illinois understand that no one method of giving fits all donors. Therefore, for the convenience of our supporters, we make available several options as described below:

We all win when a child succeeds in school, when families are financially stable and when people are healthy. These results have benefits that ripple out to the community as a whole.

You never know when you, a member of your family or a neighbor may need a United Way service. Job loss, illness, loss of a loved one, accidents, disabilities, family problems, natural disasters, mental disorders and the problems of growing up and growing old know no boundaries.

Last year, 73,914 participants used programs funded

by United Way of Southern Illinois. Moreover, our community-wide initiatives are bringing new and needed tools to address emerging issues.
