Sowetans honours fallen heroes of 1976
Soweto residents together with tourists and political parties including Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and African National Congress (ANC) members were all gathered at the Hector Pieterson Museum in Orlando West, Soweto to celebrate and commemorate the youth of 1976 on Youth Day. In honour of the fallen heroes, political parties supported by local residents sang and danced liberation songs. People were all eager to see the iconic exhibition hall that features the activities that lead to the country’s attaining its democracy. It was an enlightening experience for the young generation present as they got the opportunity to acquire knowledge and be taught about the country’s history that includes the Soweto uprising of 1976. The representatives of different political parties present had the opportunity to address the youth and encourage them to follow the footsteps of the youth of 1976 by fighting for what they believed in. Tourists were also astonished to observe the South African culture of rejoicing the lives of their fallen heroes as they thought it was a day of sorrow. They were also taking pictures and videos of all the activities that were happening. David Matsobane, a Soweto residents said, “Today marks the foundation on which our democracy has been built. I was a student back then and most of the things I see today do not make me proud, there are so many things that are leading our youth astray however I am happy that I am still alive to witness this day”
