A SIMPLY GOOD WELCOME…

We are thrilled, humbled and in awe of God’s plans and dreams. We stand in unison declaring…God is working in you, giving you the desire and power to do what pleases Him. —Philippians 2:13

Alicia Economos, Author, Speaker, Coach WOW! Wholehearted Living LLC Alicia Economos is the founder and director of “WOW! Audiences benefit from her insights, heartfelt enthusiasm as well as Alicia’s surprisingly simple approach to living wholeheartedly. Meet Becky Johnston, who had created and launched Simply Good Magazine and was seeking God’s provision. Through much prayer, she felt at peace with waiting for additional team members to join with her and art director, Amanda Marsh. Meet Alicia Economos, founder and director of “Wholehearted Living.” Having started her ministry 6 years earlier, had been praying for God’s provision to fulfill the dream He had provided—a dream that the Wholehearted Living program would reach millions of women around the world, all for God’s glory. Her prayer team had specifically prayed for a means of sharing God’s Word with more women, having no idea what that might look like. Meet God, our amazing Father, who perfectly orchestrated an introduction through a mutual friend. Becky and Alicia immediately realized they shared the same vision. The results, are what’s in front of you—a shared vision of connecting with and supporting Christian women across the country. To

provide simple and effective tools to live wholeheartedly and love God, yourself and others with ALL your heart. Yours for the Journey, Alicia Economos & Becky Johnston

WHEN EXPERIENCING A LITTLE TURBULENCE… Fasten Your Seat Belt

An executive whose responsibilities had taken him all over this country shared one of the most frightening, yet thought-provoking, experiences of his life. He had been on a long flight from one place to another. The first warning of the approaching problems came when the sign on the airplane flashed on: Fasten your seat belts. Then, after a while, a calm voice said, “We shall not be serving the beverages at this time as we are expecting a little turbulence. Please be sure your seat belt is fastened.” As he looked around the aircraft, it became obvious that many of the passengers were becoming apprehensive. Later, the voice of the announcer said, “We are so sorry that we are unable to serve the meal at this time. The turbulence is still ahead of us.” Then the storm broke. The ominous cracks of thunder could be heard even above the roar of the engines. Lightening lit up the darkening skies, and within moments that great plane was like a cork tossed around on a celestial ocean. One moment the airplane was lifted on terrific currents of air; the next, it dropped as if it were about to crash. The executive confessed that he shared the discomfort and fear of those around him. He said, “As I looked around the plane, I could see that nearly all the passengers were upset and alarmed. Some were praying. The future seemed ominous and many were

wondering if they would make it through the storm. Then, I suddenly saw a little girl. Apparently the storm meant nothing to her. She had tucked her feet beneath her as she sat on her seat; she was reading a book and every thing within her small world was calm and orderly. Sometimes she closed her eyes, then she would read again; then she would straighten her legs, but worry and fear were not in her world. When the plane was being buffeted by the terrible storm when it lurched this way and that, as it rose and fell with frightening severity, when all the adults were scared half to death, that marvelous child was completely composed and unafraid.” The executive could hardly believe his eyes. It was not surprising therefore, that when the plane finally reached its destination and all the passengers were hurrying to disembark, the executive lingered to speak to the girl whom he had watched for such a long time. Having commented about the storm and behavior of the plane, he asked why she had not been afraid. The child replied, “Cause my Daddy’s the pilot, and he’s taking me home.”

WOW! WHOLEHEARTED LIVING…

Loving God, Yourself and Others, With All Your Heart

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Alicia Economos is the founder and director of Wholehearted Living and the Wholehearted Coaching Certification Program. Alicia is the author of three books and the Wholehearted Bible study. She is a sought-after speaker who is regularly featured in Simply Good magazine, sharing simple but effective tips for living wholeheartedly. Drawing from her twenty-plus years of coaching experience, Alicia shares the simple steps to gain healthy relationships with God, yourself and others. With a fast-paced, interactive and often humorous approach, she shares empowering tools that can help you experience peace, confidence and joy in your own life.

Today’s Tip: Ask God to show you His plans and dreams for your life. Then rely on Him for every bit of provision.

10

When you hear the term wholehearted living, what first comes to your mind? Maybe it’s easier to think of the alternative, to live half-heartedly. Certainly that conjures up images of not reaching your potential, nor experiencing deep fulfillment and joy —and how sad that would be, to miss out on all that God has available for you. For me, and countless others, wholehearted living means loving God, yourself and others, with all your heart. It’s not a unique concept, in fact it’s biblical. In Matthew 22:37–39, we read that we’re to love God wholeheartedly, and, that equally important, we are to love our neighbor as ourselves. That involves an assumption that we do in fact love ourselves. Sadly, most women LIKE all kinds of things on Facebook but they don’t like themselves. Believing that they’re somehow not good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, creative or athletic enough, they hold back; feeling inadequate they undervalue what they have to offer and unfortunately, fail to participate wholeheartedly— whether at work, home or elsewhere. In order to live wholeheartedly, you must discover and celebrate who God created you to be. As you learn to embrace your true identity, flaws and all, you can experience the peace, confidence and joy that are a result. The Word says that the truth will set you free, and it most certainly does. The truth is that you are an incredible, beautiful, talented and unique woman. Honestly, no one could ever take your place! But do you believe that? Women tend to be their biggest critic. Statistics show that we have over 35,000 self-thoughts per day. And, on average, over 75% of those are toxic and self-defeating. Seventy-five percent! Rather than being such a harsh critic, imagine what it would feel like to become your greatest fan. It would be like having a personal trainer on staff with you 24 hours a day; a best friend providing encouraging, affirming and supportive words and actions. Just THINK what that would mean for your approach to living every day. It just might make you want to hop out of bed each morning with a newfound excitement to live wholeheartedly!

WHEN P.U.S.H. COMES TO SHOVE… Wait For the Unexpected Blessing

A woman finally had her dream home in the country, surrounded by fields and woods. One evening as she slept peacefully, suddenly the room filled with light and God appeared. The Lord told her that He had work to do, and showed her a large rock in the backyard of her new log home. The Lord explained that the woman was to push against the rock with all her might. So, this the woman did, day after day. For many years she toiled from sun up to sun down, hers shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing with all of her might. Each night the woman returned to her cozy cabin in the woods, tired, sore and completely worn out—feeling that her whole day had been wasted. In her discouragement, these thoughts planted themselves into her weary mind: “You have been pushing against that rock for a long time, and it hasn't moved.” These thoughts gave the woman the impression that the task was impossible and that she was a failure. These thoughts so discouraged and disheartened the woman, so that she began to ask herself, “Why kill yourself over this? Just put in your time, giving just the minimum effort; and that will be good enough.” That's what the weary woman planned to do, but decided to make it a matter of prayer and to take these troubled thoughts to the Lord. “Lord,” she said, “I have labored long and hard in your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have asked. Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock by half an inch. What is wrong? Why am I failing?” The Lord responded compassionately, “My friend, when I asked you to serve Me and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all of your strength, which you have done. Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. Your task was to push. 16

And now you come to Me with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed. But, is that really so? Look at yourself. Your arms and back are strong; your hands are callused from constant pressure, your legs have become sturdy. Through opposition you have grown much, and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have. True, you haven't moved the rock. But your calling was to be obedient and to push and to exercise your faith and trust in My wisdom. That you have done. Now I, my friend, will move the rock.” At times, when we hear a word from God, we tend to use our own intellect to decipher what He wants, when actually what God wants is just a simple obedience and faith in Him. By all means, exercise the faith that moves mountains, but know that it is still God who moves mountains.

By Kathryn Kinley, LMT, NCTM, CRDP Compassionate Spirit Therapies yldist.com/vibrantoils

Ahhh...Autumn! We all love gentle Autumn. But we miss the bright sunshine of warmer days. Now you can keep Summer here year-round with the bright sunshine-y scents and tastes of citrus oils. And for SIMPLY GOOD reasons.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Kathryn Kinley earned degrees from Iowa State University and Buena Vista University. After 17 years in credit management for Fortune 500 companies, and following 5 mission trips to a special needs orphanage near Montego Bay, Jamaica, Kathryn determined her calling was to be more “hands on” in ministering to those who hurt. In 2006 she achieved National Board Certification in Therapeutic Massage, followed shortly thereafter by certification in the use of therapeutic grade essential oils. Kathryn has a thriving private practice in West Des Moines, Iowa. She enjoys offering her loyal clients the experience of “Transcending to Vibrant Health.”

Citruses contain a cornucopia of amazing compounds such as limonoids and flavones that have been well researched and shown to help support a strong immune system, and support healthy digestive, respiratory and musculoskeletal systems. These phytonutrients, like limonene and herperidin are found in the fruit's peel, rather than in the sweet tasting pulp, so they are too often removed entirely in the products and fruit that we eat, and discarded. Therapeutic grade citrus oils to the rescue! Therapeutic grade citrus oils, such as those from Young Living® are organically grown, then carefully and quickly cold-pressed from the peel of the orange, lemon, lime, bergamot and other citruses that are carefully analyzed for sufficient nutrient density and ratios of those beneficial compounds, and then bottled and sealed to be easily attainable and affordable to you. A drop or two of any of the citrus oils may be inhaled directly from the bottle or added to an essential oil diffuser to quickly brighten an entire room! Not only does its scent help eliminate unwanted odors, it may also help clear the mind! Or add a couple of drops to an organic massage oil and apply topically. Young Living’s® Vitality™ line of citrus oils are FDA approved for ingestion! A drop or two maybe added to your favorite recipes for baked goods, sauces, or marinades for a powerful kick of flavor and a burst of aroma! Or just add a drop or two to a tall, cool glass of water! The possibilities are as endless as your imagination—surpassed only by the benefits. Enjoy a drop of summer with every drop of therapeutic grade citrus essential oils! These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. Information provided here is for educational purposes only. Editor’s Note: Kathryn Kinley will be one of an impressive list of guest speakers at The Journey to Wholeness Conference in Atlanta, GA, October 7–9. Kathryn will be sharing, "Vibrant Harmony"—therapeutic energy of essential oils and sound that gives participants the opportunity to experience the energy of essential oils and “singing bowls of Tibet.”

AGAINST ALL ODDS…

Conquering Cancer Not Once, But Twice By Kelly Timmerman Kelly Timmerman Nutrition kellytimmerman.com

After beating cancer, busy mom goes from being a tired sugar and Diet Coke addict to inspiring her family to get healthy and lose 100 lbs together. She took care of her health by mastering clean, balanced eating with simple time-saving strategies for busy women.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Kelly Timmerman is an Author, Speaker, Nutritionist and Cancer Conqueror who has coached everyone from soccer moms to Olympic athletes and executives. Kelly passionately empowers busy people to get their body back by making healthy eating SIMPLE and DOABLE for life. Kelly’s coaching has been featured on CNN Headline News.

There is hope for all of us who were yo-yo-dieters! By learning “Eat in 3’s” you will naturally balance your blood sugar, rock your metabolism and naturally become a fat-burning machine. No more yo-yo dieting! I’m on a mission to end the dieting madness by helping others eat a balance of protein, fat, and carbs to rock their metabolism, boost energy and become fat-burning machines. I was a busy “Super Mom” who always put myself “last” in line after my family and career. I had 2 amazing kids, an incredible husband and a thriving career…yet deep inside I had low self-esteem and I hated how I felt in my clothes. I was addicted to sugar and Diet Coke, was constantly dieting, and lacked energy to keep up with life. My world stopped when I received a diagnosis of colon cancer. After surgeries and weeks on end in the hospital, I fought and I won. I finally returned to work and just a few months later, I was diagnosed with breast cancer! Chemo, radiation, more surgeries…I fought…and once again with God’s help, we won. I emerged stronger, passionately and purposefully living my 2nd (or really 3rd) chance at life. As I tried to figure out how to get healthy and get my body back, I was discouraged by all the messages out there like “don’t eat gluten, don’t eat sugar, don’t eat fat, don’t eat carbs…” and I felt like there was nothing left to eat! And then there was the lure of all the quick-fix diets that promised success, but only lead to failure and yo-yo dieting. I passionately pursued answers/education/ certification, and my program Win the Food Fight was born. I’ve helped over 1000 people balance their blood sugar, lose weight and end the dieting madness in the last 2 years alone. Check out Kelly’s FREE Workshop, available at two convenient times:

AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY…

From Sunny California to Changing Seasons in Iowa By Cathy McCall

Growing up in southern California, I never dreamed I’d be living in Ankeny, Iowa and enjoying the changing of the seasons—especially the golden hues of autumn!

The chain of events for this unexpected journey began on September 7, 2000 with the call that my husband and father of our three sons had been killed in a fiery crash on the freeway near our home in Orange County. It was early in the morning and Bobby was a strong, 42-year-old construction worker on his way to work in his pick up truck. It was only by the grace of God and the assurance that He would lead me through this “valley of the shadow of death” that I was able to survive the shock of this life-changing crisis. The months that followed were a blur as I handled all the details of making funeral arrangements, working part time at Chuck Swindoll’s First Evangelical Free Church in Fullerton and now had sole responsibility for our three sons. At the time, Josh, 23 was in grad school, Chad, 20 was a student at USC and Blaine, 16 was in high school. This photo of the four of us was taken about a year after Bobby’s fatal accident at the wedding of our son Josh.

24

Knowing that my husband who had left us so suddenly as a result of this horrible highway accident had accepted Christ as his Savior and was in Heaven was a small comfort in those dark days. Our marriage had not been ideal and I had been praying for 25 years for Bobby to let Jesus turn his life around. As an amazing answer to prayer, just the night before Bobby had apologized to the point of tears for the pain he had caused me and his failure to be a good father to his sons. Just the year before, I had lost both parents to terminal illness just months apart. While my faith was tested on a daily basis as I navigated through the many challenges of finding myself suddenly a single parent, I always believed that God would never leave me or forsake me and would provide for my emotional needs as well as my physical needs. As a widow in mid-life, for me that meant a husband and companion whose first priority was serving God and seeking to build his Kingdom here on earth. Through many long years of patiently waiting, that call came just as unexpectedly as the first call that changed the course of my life forever. I’ll share more of the blessing that brought me to Iowa in the November issue of Simply Good Magazine.

FOR BETTER HEALTH AND LONGEVITY… Reprogram Your Genes Through Lifestyle Choices

By Vernon Delpesce Consultant, Live Healthy! livehealthy.io

I’ll bet you didn’t know you could reprogram your genes; at least some of them. When you think of your genes, familial genes probably come to mind. These genes are the ones that influence many of your personal traits such as eye and hair color, height, body shape, and facial features.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Through his writing and coaching, Vernon Delpesce draws on 38 years of service in the health and wellness field with the YMCA. As a health coach, his mission is to help people who are searching for relief from an unhealthy lifestyle gain control and focus on what is important to them. Vernon lives in West Des Moines, Iowa with his wife, two adult children and two dogs. Cowboy, his Australian Shepherd, is shown above.

Your familial genes also give you a predisposition for things like your math aptitude and athletic abilities, as well as a predisposition to diseases like cancer and heart disease. Although your eye and hair color are set, the gene expression that influences your health and longevity can be optimized through lifestyle choices. So, even though there may be health risks that run in your family, that doesn’t mean there is nothing you can do. You have the ability to influence the genes that regulate muscular development, fat storage, inflammation, and other factors related to health through the foods you eat, the workouts you do, and other healthy lifestyle habits.

Each of us has about 20,000 genes on each strand of DNA, and only a portion of them are heritable genes. Think of genes as “navigators” sending important instructions to every cell in your body. 26

Genes have a simple on/off switch which responds to an environmental stimulus (foods you eat, exercise, sleep, sun exposure, etc.) and turn on or off the production of protein modules that direct every element of body function. You can’t turn off the genes that make your eyes brown, but you can turn off or on certain genes that have an influence on your health. A genetic predisposition to a health risk may remain, but you minimize the impact based on the signals you send their way. So the goal is to focus on lifestyle behaviors that influence the gene expression that promotes health and longevity. The concepts and principles that we are promoting at Live Healthy are those that turn on the “good” gene switches that increase fat burning, build muscle, fight invading viruses, and neutralize the oxidative cell damage. The good news is you control what you put in your mouth and you control your lifestyle. Use it to your advantage not to your detriment. Live Healthy!

Twice a year my daughter Silicia and I participate in a local bridal show. At these festive events, nearly 200 vendors set up booths and visit with the brides-to-be and their families. As a certified bridal consultant, through Char's Touch, I offer the bridal party full service and several day-ofcoordination packages. At the recent bridal show, I shared a booth (shown above) with my daughter, Silicia Boutchee, owner of Eventfully Yours—a party rental store in Des Moines.

Since planning for most weddings can begin at least a year in advance, wedding planners can come in to help the bride out with details making the big day something to remember for a lifetime. It's vital to have a great working relationship with your Planner. Here’s an example of how I have been of assistance, as a Planner, to a bridal couple. I consulted with a bride and groom that had been planning their wedding for 18 months and their big day was in September 2016. I was introduced to them through Eventfully Yours and when we first met she had ideas and notes. Taking all of this into consideration, I was able to help her prioritize and create a timeline that broke everything down to: Planning for 6 months; 3 months; 1 month; as well as the week and day prior to their Wedding Day. The celebration was magical!

I WAS WAITING TO PICK UP A FRIEND AT THE AIRPORT… The Day That Changed My Life

I was waiting to pick up a friend at the airport. That day I had one of those experiences that change people’s lives. It happened just two feet away from me. I noticed a man, carrying two bags, coming toward me. He stopped next to me to greet his family. First of all he laid down his bag and came closer to his younger son (about six years old), they gave each other a warm, loving hug. Then the father looked in his son’s eyes with words: “I missed you so much, it’s so good to see you, son!” The boy smiled and said: “Me too, dad.” Then the man talked to his older son (nine or ten years old). “Oh, you are quite the young man, I love you very much!” and cupped his face. Then they had the most tender hug too. Afterwards the father said “Hi, baby girl” to his baby daughter. She was squirming excitedly in her mother‘s arm and watching her returning father all the time. The man gently took his little daughter, quickly kissed her face all over and then held her

close to his chest. The little girl laid her head on his shoulder in pure contentment. After several moments the man looked at his wife and said “I’ve saved the best for last” and shared with her the most passionate kiss. They stared at each other, beaming big smiles. They reminded me of newlyweds. Suddenly, I heard myself asking, “Wow, how long have you been married?” “Been together fourteen years, and married twelve of those.” “Well then, how long have you been away?” He replied with a joyous smile on his face: “Two whole days!” I was stunned, as I imagined that he had been gone for several weeks at least. I could only say: “I hope that my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years.” The man looked straight into my eyes and told me something that changed my life: “Don’t hope, friend. Decide!”… —Author Unknown

LITTLE BLINKERS…

Making the World A Little Brighter Shared by Joseph J. Mazzella

I was walking my beagle, Snoopy the other evening while the last light of the setting sun colored the clouds purple and pink. I looked up to the sky and smiled. After a minute Snoopy started pulling at her leash. She was more than ready to head inside for a bowl of dog food and a bacon treat. I wasn’t quite ready to go in yet, however, so I knelt down and patted her head. I was waiting for my friends, the Little Blinkers to appear. It wasn’t long either before I saw them switching their lights on and off. They were fireflies, of course, also known as lightening bugs. Over all the years that I have lived here they have never failed to appear in mid-summer to do their mating dance of light and love. They have never failed to delight me. They have never failed to amaze me. They have never failed to make the world a little brighter. It has always been such a joy too knowing that God created such

wonderful creatures that can shine their own light and make the dark meadows look like the starry skies above. They make me want to share my own light as well, even if it isn’t that bright and even if it does tend to blink now and then. Robert Fulghum wrote, “I know some people who give off a lot of light. Because they have absorbed a lot of light themselves. They Shine.” I don’t know how much light I have absorbed over the years, but I do know that I won’t keep it hidden under a basket. I will shine it. I will share it. I will use it to bring as much goodness, love, joy, and wisdom into this world as I possibly can. May you always shine your light as brightly as you can. May you always share it with others as well. Remember too that God doesn’t ask you to illuminate the whole world. He just wants you to make your little corner of it a bit brighter.

THANKS TO A COMPLETE STRANGER‌ I Can Do This

I tried to go to college once when my daughter was two years old. I was told by my ex 'I couldn't do it' and 'I would be neglecting my daughter.' So I gave up. When my daughter turned five, I went to the college to do my assessment testing. The whole way there I kept hearing the critical voice of my ex in my head telling me those things again. I got to the parking lot and found out they only take cash for the parking permit. His voice got to me and this older lady just knew. She walked over and started talking to me. I told her I was just going to go

home and give up. She told me not to do that because she would pay the $2. She went out of her way to get me to the testing room. It was the best thing in the world she could have done for me. A complete stranger saved me from giving up again. I will always hold onto that parking permit to remind me that a complete stranger had faith in me and that I can do this. That a past voice will not control my life anymore. I wish I could have told her thank you for this. She may never know how much this little act of kindness meant to me, but God does.

“Many of the adults served by Mosaic hold artistic promise, but their skills are marginalized due to a lack of formal art education, transportation and supplies. There is a severe underrepresentation of the artists’ works in the community,” said Canepa. People served by Mosaic were invited to a special day at Drake where they learned various art methods from faculty and students in Drake’s fine arts program. They were able to try new art techniques and then by using the individual mirrors, start on their self-portrait piece for the exhibit. Finding Happiness was unveiled to the community at an opening reception for the public on March 31. Several people served by Mosaic, their guardians, Drake University faculty and students, as well as members of the community came out to support the artists. “I’ve enjoyed making the art,” said Nathan Williamson, a person supported by Mosaic who created several works, including a self-portrait. “I actually feel

like an artist, and I had fun! I hope to be able to do more.” The artistic partnership has served as a bridge to further opportunities between Mosaic and Drake as well as other members of the Des Moines art community.

SEEING IS BELIEVING… InnerVisions Health Care

By Jenny Condon, Executive Director InnerVisions Health Care ivhcare.org

InnerVisions Health Care provides women and men facing unplanned pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases with compassionate, non-judgmental, and truthful information, sexual integrity education, and free medical care, to empower them to make the most informed, life-affirming decisions for themselves and families.

We can’t solve all crisis pregnancies overnight—but we can do it one client at a time, and that’s why it’s important for our nurses to spend quality time building that trust and rapport with each client during their appointment at InnerVisions, where top-notch, quality medical care meets ministry-based services. In our experience, women who see sonograms of their babies are more open to embracing their motherhood and welcoming a baby into their arms. We are so grateful for the initial gift of an ultrasound machine five years ago. Last October we were generously awarded a grant for an Option Ultrasound Program through Focus on the Family. The larger portion of the grant funds 80% of a stateof-the-art ultrasound machine which helps more women gain a “vision” inside their womb (a reference to our clinic’s name). We’ve been asked, “How about an update on Ariel and her baby?” Just before Christmas Ariel was 23 weeks pregnant. She made it to 34 weeks pregnant, but then delivered her son prematurely, who ended up spending some time in the NICU. Shortly after he was released from the hospital, they came to the clinic for a visit.

While Ariel’s life has had many ups and downs, as a young woman in her early 20s, she has relied on the staff at InnerVisions to check up on her, help with moral and emotional support. We were honored in June when Abby Johnson joined us for our 5th Anniversary celebration. Abby, a pro-life advocate and former clinic director of Planned Parenthood, experienced a “change of heart.” Her best-selling book, Unplanned is followed by The Walls are Talking. At our Gala, Abby graciously signed copies of her newest book for our guests.

A BRAND NEW SUNRISE… A Brand New Start

Shared by Martha Williamson of Touched By An Angel MarthaWilliamson.com

I found a scripture the other day that I’ve never noticed before. It’s “my voice shalt thou hear in the morning o Lord and in the morning will I direct my prayer unto Thee and I will look up.” That’s Psalm 5, verse 3.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Martha Williamson made television history when her CBS series, “Touched By An Angel” set a new standard for inspirational family drama, attracting a weekly audience of 25 million as a billion-dollar franchise during its initial nine-year run. As Executive Producer and Head Writer, Williamson guided the series into previously uncharted territory with her unique brand of inspirational storytelling. Williamson’s “Promised Land,” aired for three years on CBS. Her “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” dramatic comedy premiered on Hallmark Channel. Williamson has been a featured guest on such shows as “Oprah,” “60 Minutes” and “Larry King Live” and a member of the Television & Radio Hall of Fame.

38

And it reminded me of my dad. My dad was not the sort of person who would run around and grab people by the lapels and say, “Come to Jesus! Repent and be saved!” But people could always tell what he believed by the way he lived and the way he helped people. He was a kind, friendly gentleman and no one ever questioned his great faith. And one of the ways I knew that he truly loved God was one little thing that he always did. Every morning as he walked into the kitchen he would stop at the back door, the kitchen door that faced the east where the sun was coming up. He would pull back the drape and look at the sunrise and he would say a little quiet prayer. I never knew what he said. I don’t know if it was the same prayer every day or if it was a different prayer every day, but I know that he always stopped there on that little step and spent a moment with the Lord, preparing himself for the day. I imagine that he prayed for his family and for our safety and for my future and certainly prayed that our family would come together again in safety at the end of the day. And I’m sure it included some words of thanksgiving. It was a touching habit and a powerful example to me. And I’m sure that it came from a line from one of his favorite hymns “Great is Thy Faithfulness”: “morning by morning new mercies I see.” He taught me that every single morning God gives you a brand new sunrise, a brand new start. Every morning His mercies are new, yesterday is gone. God has given you a brand new today. So, right now where you are sitting at your computer, whatever you have to do after you click away, remember that God is already preparing a brand new day tomorrow, with brand new mercies, with great forgiveness, and a chance to start over.

SHORT BUT SWEET…

Six Little Stories for Living Large Shared by Sudhir

1. One day, all the villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella…that's FAITH. 2. When you teach your children to swim, they laugh because they know you’re right there watching over them…that's TRUST. 3. Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning. But still we set the alarms to wake up…that's HOPE.

4. We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future.…that's CONFIDENCE.

5. We see the world suffering, but still we get married and have children…that's LOVE.

6. On an old man's shirt was written a sentence. “I am not 80 years old, I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.” …that's ATTITUDE. SAFE WATER INTERNATIONAL MINISTRIES (S.W.I.M.)… Bringing Safe Water to Schools and Disaster Relief Worldwide

By Earl Ratcliff, President Safe Water International Ministries swimforhim.org

Did you know that the solution for bringing safe water to the needy of the world can be found in God’s Word? PRAY FOR US.

VOLUNTEER. Rich Grant, a S.W.I.M. volunteer board member is shown opposite with villagers from one of hundreds of villages S.W.I.M. serves in India. Also shown is Greg Stout demonstrating the use of the battery pack with the CPU.

SUPPORT. CPU’s are sold at cost so that others can use them as ministry tools. For just $50, SWIM can manufacture a CPU. We can also send the CPU kit directly to you for your use or your church’s mission trip. To donate towards a CPU kit, which comes with bottles, chlorine tester and the items to get you started, you may mail your check to:

The men of the city said to Elisha, “Look, our Lord, this town is well situated as you can see, but the water is bad and the land unproductive. “Bring me a new bowl,” he said, “and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. Then he went to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, “This is what the Lord says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’” II Kings 2:19–21 Fast forward thousands of years… Chlorination of water has been used in the United States for well over 90 years and has proven to be safe, fast and effective as a disinfectant. Think how fun it is to jump into a swimming pool knowing that the water is safe for swimming! In the United States, we are blessed to have safe water for swimming, washing and drinking. But not so in many other areas of the world. In most of the developing world there is a critical need for safe water; however drilling additional wells is not always the best option. The additional wells still supply contaminated water, and political, monetary and location problems are often insurmountable. Likewise, filtration is sometimes needed, but many methods are slow, ineffective, or difficult to maintain.

Safe Water International Ministries (S.W.I.M.) was organized in 2004 to bring two types of water to those in need. S.W.I.M. uses a ready-to-use device that generates chlorine and other oxidants by the electrolysis of common table salt, and water with the use of a battery source. To meet the spiritual need of the people is the most important part of all. For many years Greg and Vickie Stout have dedicated their lives full-time to the ministry of S.W.I.M. by bringing safe water to needy people as well as sharing the “Living Water of Jesus Christ” with those that thirst spiritually. The S.W.I.M. hand-held Chlorine Producing Unit (CPU) is a ministry tool designed to give all people around the world the opportunity for safe water. It is purposely made to be portable, durable, lightweight, inexpensive, and so simple that anyone can use it safely. Yet, a CPU is capable of meeting the needs of an entire village of 1,000 people. If used properly, they will last for many years of service. There are no harmful by-products and training takes only minutes. There are many simple ways to assist us in reaching the poorest of the poor with the Gospel of Christ by using technology available for disinfecting water.

CATCH, RELEASE & REPLACE… With Acceptance, Thanksgiving & Trust

By Heidi Vermeer-Quist, Psy.D. Author, Gardening Your Life Series

When I was growing up, every summer my Grandma and Grandpa Vermeer took my cousins and me fishing up in Canada. Looking back, it was quite a treat, though I often did not fully appreciate it at the time.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR… Heidi Vermeer-Quist, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist as well as a wife, mother, musician and family business consultant. (vqconsult.com) In 2002, Heidi helped to establish the Des Moines Clinic for Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services that has grown into a fully-staffed outpatient mental health clinic. We would get up early every morning, usually before 6 a.m., which was “sleeping in” for my grandparents. Sleepy eyed and chilled, we’d shuffle to the table for a hot fisherman’s breakfast. During breakfast, we’d talk about the day, which lake we’d go to, and what Grandma would pack for our lunch. Then, we’d get out onto the water as quickly as possible. Within two to five minutes of putting minnows on our hooks and letting our lines down, one of us would get a “hit.” Then, the fishing frenzy would begin. We caught beautiful (well, if fish can be beautiful), big fish—mostly Walleye and Northern Pike. Once we caught our limit, we’d start weeding through our stringers full of fish and decide which ones we wanted to keep and which ones we wanted to release and replace.

its value. We may reel in something quite disappointing, and it is up to us to hold onto it or to let it go. Sometimes, we get in the habit of catching and holding onto unhelpful thoughts or expectations (for others, outcomes, or holding onto memories— such as “coulda,” “woulda,” “shoulda’s”) and not releasing them. It is vitally important to release and replace those thoughts that are toxic to our mental health. Remember, when you catch toxic thoughts you realize that you can free yourself by simply releasing them to God’s care and replacing them with something better. Keep in mind something tangible in the present, focus on gifts from God given to you in every moment, and adopt an attitude of acceptance, thanksgiving, and trust.

Catch, Release, & Replace. This fishing experience serves as a great analogy for mental health. Did you know that we go fishing all the time? We cast our attention like a fishing line, baited and hooked, trying to connect with the next great “catch.” And, typically our mental ponds are stocked full. We catch something immediately. What we reel in may or may not be a “great keeper.” We are the ones judging

CELEBRATE LIFE‌ Gather and Grow

By Sara Wilson, Development Specialist On With Life, Brain Injury Rehabilitation Specialists™ onwithlife.org

Dave Russell and Bruce Schwering are Honorary Co-Chairs for On With Life's recognition and fundraising event, Celebrate Life: Gather and Grow. The event will be held on Friday, September 30 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at On With Life. Our Diamond event sponsor is Mercy Medical Center. You are invited to gather, grow and celebrate with us! We are planning a wonderful celebration full of food, drinks, music, therapy grounds unveilings and powerful stories. Funds raised through the Celebrate Life event will go directly toward providing life-changing specialized therapy for those On With Life is privileged to serve.

On With Life is currently transforming 1.5 acres of green space into multi-faceted outdoor therapeutic grounds in Ankeny, and event proceeds will be applied to the therapeutic grounds at Ankeny as well as the therapy grounds at On With Life's Long-Term Skilled Care Program for Youth and Younger Adults in Glenwood. On Friday, September 30, we are looking forward to an extreme build of the butterfly garden that will be unveiled the night of the event!

Governor Terry E. Branstad was the featured speaker at the 2015 event. He is shown with First Lady Chris Branstad and Julie Fidler Dixon, On With Life CEO and Carl Harris, president of the board, On With Life, Inc. and Jeff Lamberti, president of the board, On With Life Foundation. May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
