SA president suspended over deal with performer, according to board of directors member SA Board of Directors member shares details about president’s suspension, president starts petition, obtains 763 signatures in three days JULIAN ROBERTS-GRMELA SENIOR NEWS EDITOR

A member of the Student Association Board of Directors (BOD) told The Spectrum, on the condition of anonymity, the primary reason for SA President Yousouf Amolegbe’s suspension is that Amolegbe planned to host rapper Fivio Foreign at SA’s Trap Fest on the same night he planned to host the rapper for an event hosted by RAGE Boyz Entertainment, a company he is co-CEO of. Under Amolegbe’s deal, SA would have paid Fivio Foreign $9,500, which would cover his transportation to Buffalo and enable RAGE Boyz to book him for “much cheaper,” according to the BOD member. The deal was stopped before it was finalized. The BOD member said SA and university professional staff stopped the deal, while other officials said Amolegbe stopped the deal. The BOD source claimed the deal constituted a significant conflict because SA would have paid for Fivio Foreign’s transportation, and RAGE Boyz would have been able to host Fivio Foreign for “much cheaper.” Amolegbe said he booked Fivio Foreign for a RAGE Boyz event on the same night as Trap Fest because Fivio Foreign wasn’t willing to come to Buffalo for the price SA was offering. Amolegbe said he added the RAGE Boyz event to make the trip to Buffalo “more realistic.” The BOD source said the deal constituted a conflict of interest even though it wasn’t finalized. “Once you’re caught trying to do it, it doesn’t really make the situation much better than if you had done it to begin with,” the source said.

The BOD suspended Amolegbe on Jan. 31 but has not announced why, beyond citing a Rules, Administration and Government Oversight committee (RAGO) investigation that found him guilty of conflict-of-interest violations related to SA events. The BOD has to wait until at least Tuesday to vote to publicize the documents related to the suspension, because both the RAGO committee’s investigation and the BOD’s motion for suspension took place during executive sessions and the board didn’t vote to publicize the information during its Jan. 31 meeting. BOD members face removal from their positions if they share information about executive sessions without the BOD voting to publicize that information. As of Sunday at 8 p.m., 763 people signed a petition Amolegbe created last Thursday urging the BOD to lift the suspension, which it can do with a two-thirds majority vote. The BOD will meet Tuesday and consider recommendations by the RAGO committee to publicize the RAGO committee’s investigation report, provide Amolegbe at least an hour to speak and a resolution to suspend Amolegbe for “clarity,” although he will be suspended regardless of the resolution. The anonymous BOD member said the RAGO committee found Amolegbe guilty of violations including: DJ Mike West’s appearance at Spring Fest 2019; Amolegbe’s alleged failure to familiarize himself with SA’s conflict-of-interest policy; Amolegbe’s alleged failure to disclose RAGE Boyz as a potential conflict of interest; Amolegbe’s alleged failure to disclose DJ Wire’s alleged affiliation with RAGE Boyz; Amolegbe allegedly booking West for Winter Gala after being informed it would be a conflict of interest; Amolegbe’s failure to disclose West as his roommate and the coCEO of RAGE Boyz; and Amolegbe’s arrangement with Fivio Foreign. Amolegbe denies all conflict-of-interest allegations, except his “failure” to disclose West as his roommate and the co-CEO of RAGE Boyz, and said he didn’t think to disclose this because SA hired West before

his presidency and SA members knew of West’s association with Amolegbe. Amolegbe said he read SA’s conflict-of-interest policy and that his co-CEO position at RAGE Boyz does not conflict with his SA position. Amolegbe says RAGE Boyz is not affiliated with DJ Wire, who is “just a vendor” the company books, and that he did not select DJs for Gala but the former chief of staff selected West. The BOD member said Amolegbe’s deal with Fivio Foreign was the “most significant” violation in the RAGO committee’s investigation report. Another anonymous SA official refuted the BOD source’s claim that SA and university professional staff prevented the deal, saying Amolegbe cancelled the show after the conflict was brought to his attention. The SA official said SA and university professional staff “did not stop anything” but advised against signing the contract. Amolegbe confirmed this. The BOD source said Amolegbe claimed he did not read SA’s conflict-ofinterest policy and therefore did not know the deal constituted a conflict of interest, although members of SA’s BOD and executive board are required to read the policy. “He told us that he actually didn’t know that what he was doing constituted a conflict of interest,” the BOD member said. “So it was essentially a plea of ignorance at that point.” Amolegbe said he read the policy when he started in the position but “didn’t have a full and clear understanding” of the policy at the time. “Throughout the year, I’ve had to adapt to a very non-traditional approach to learning my role as president, as the fiscal agent transition over the summer didn’t allow the executive board an extensive opportunity to be as versed on incorporation laws and other policies as those in the past have,” Amolegbe said. “Nonetheless, when the conflict was brought to my attention I proceeded to take the necessary actions to eliminate it.” Additionally, the anonymous BOD

member said Amolegbe failed to comply with two of the BOD’s recommendations: refrain from associating SA business with RAGE Boyz and update his conflict-ofinterest form. The BOD source said Amolegbe failed to “refrain from associating SA business with RAGE Boyz” because Amolegbe lists himself as both SA President and CEO of RAGE Boyz on his social media accounts. Amolegbe claims his personal social media accounts are “completely out of the jurisdiction of the BOD.” “I’ve never promoted an SA event on the RAGE Boyz page nor have I promoted a RAGE Boyz event on the SA page. For the [BOD] to insist I stop promoting events from both organizations I am a part of is honestly an attempt to strip me of my title and credentials,” Amolegbe said. Amolegbe’s alleged neglect to update his conflict-of-interest form was a “serious issue,” according to the BOD source. Amolegbe updated his form before the BOD meeting on Jan. 31, but the anonymous source said Amolegbe only updated it “an hour” before the meeting and said that was a problem. “He [updated his conflict-of-interest form] an hour before the board meeting, which means that through the last week or last few weeks of the semester and over winter break, in which SA is either negotiating or planning contracts with multiple entertainment events, he had not updated his conflict-of-interest form,” the BOD source said. The anonymous SA official said it was not Amolegbe’s fault that he updated his conflict-of-interest form later than some expected, as updating the form would require an executive board meeting and not all members were available to meet over break. The BOD’s meeting –– which is open to the public –– will take place Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Capen 567. Email: julian.grmela@ubspecturm.com Twitter: @GrmelaJulian

Paint me like one of your French boys Should male andt female nudity be treated differently in film?

ISABELLA FORTUNATO CONTRIBUTING WRITER

The references to “male” and “female” throughout this piece, following the initial references of “cis male and female,” are meant to describe the cisgender male or female body. Most people would consider the infamous line, “paint me like one of your French girls,” between Jack and Rose in the 1997 film “Titanic” one of the most romantic scenes ever portrayed between two young people on the big screen. It’s practically common knowledge that, in this scene, Rose poses completely nude, while she is respectfully drawn by her love interest. The dynamic between these two characters carries sweetness and inno-

cence that resonates strongly with most fans, despite the overt sexual overtones coming from Rose. But what if Jack had asked Rose to paint him like one of her French boys? On its release, “Titanic” was only given a PG-13 rating, but I’m willing to bet if we were seeing Jack in his birthday suit, the film probably would have earned an R rating instead. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), a privately-owned film rating system, is used to rate all major movies released in the U.S. It is notorious for giving non-sexualized, full-frontal cis male nudity an R-rating while giving cis female nudity with a comparably explicit nature a PG-13 rating. And personally, I believe male and female nudity shouldn’t be treated any differently in the media, and the apparent guidelines the MPAA rating members follow say almost the exact same thing. The MPAA rating guide, found on its website, states that “More than brief nudity [in films] will require at least a PG-13 rating, but such nudity in a PG-13 rated motion picture generally will not be sexually oriented.” While in contrast, for a movie to get an R-rating the content must be “sexually-oriented.” But who’s really behind the MPAA, and why do they seem to have a small set of keys, capable of unlocking what’s consid-

Pretty girl It’s okay to be comfortable with your sexuality

REILLY MULLEN ASST. NEWS EDITOR

I am a hopeless romantic. And I’ve never had a difficult time finding a boyfriend. As a conventionally attractive woman, I know that I draw stares. I notice when men glance at me 11 times in Bert’s and I count each time they offer me drinks at parties or joke that I’m not finishing them fast enough. I have never had reason to chase after

boys, they have always approached me. And I have been very careful to keep track of every encounter. My friends call them “charts” — detailed lists of who has shown interest in me. Their qualities, the vibes they radiated, whether or not I was attracted to them. These charts are usually accompanied by a journal entry where I expel all of my feelings on the matter. Think of them as unofficial boyfriend applications. I am not lost on the idea that my plights in this instance are ones that others might consider a privilege. I know that it is not the worst thing in the world to be considered a “pretty girl.” But with great looks comes great responsibilities, dates, relationships and sex. And sex was never a taboo subject in my life. I lost my virginity at 14 and started taking birth control at 15 with regular STD testing. Although it wasn’t always an open discussion in my house, I never felt uncomfortable going to my mother with questions about experiences I was having.

ered socially acceptable within the cinematic world? The answer might come as a surprise. Each movie is reviewed by a handful of randomly selected parents residing in Los Angeles, who give their opinion on what films should be rated. The only qualification for those selected is that they have a child between the ages of five and 15. Essentially, they’re no different than you, me or anybody else walking around campus. So what makes this very small pool of people the only ones who determine the indecencies associated with nudity? There is no place in their official rulebook that states that male full-frontal nudity is considered inherently more sexual than female frontal nudity. Yet, male nudity appears significantly more often in Rrated films than those with PG-13 ratings. The appearance of male nudity in Rrated films could of course be attributed to other variables in the movie, such as language and violence, that push the film over the teetering edge separating PG-13 and R. But the fact that you can’t see dongs in more PG-13 content, while female nudity is readily available, just goes to show the disproportionate relationship between the male and female bodies in Western culture. Hiding male genitalia behind the mystic lure of the R-rating in some ways shows And I’ve had lots of experiences. Did that change your opinion of me? There is a double standard between men and women in the perceptions of how often they have sex, their amount of sexual partners and their openness when talking about their experiences. Whether we’d like to admit it or not, people cringe with shame at the idea that I, as a woman, have had 25 sexual partners, where if a man were to tell you the same, he’d be praised. I am not ashamed to talk about the good, the bad and the dirty when it comes to my sexual experiences. My friends know all the details of every hookup I’ve had when I come bursting into the room the next day to laugh at and discuss the “mistakes” I made the night before. I trust my circle’s opinions and don’t get offended when they tell me, “I’m going to lock you in a box so you stop dating all these frat boys!” But what can I say? I have a type. When potential sexual partners ask questions about my history, I am always honest. It probably stems from an almost unhealthy amount of self-confidence and an aggressively flirty personality, but I also feel that the more open and honest you are about your history –– number of partners, last STD testing and what you’re looking to gain out of an experience. Whether a one-night-stand, casual hookups or a re-

“They were causing havoc up front which trickled down to the secondary and their quarterback was just throwing money out there and we were taking it.” “Can’t we enjoy this one for just a minute?”

the greater respect for male decency over female. A woman’s body can simply be thrown around willy-nilly in the media, almost like one of its main purposes is for viewers’ pleasure. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with women being proud of their body and being able to portray themselves as they please, but I think it is a huge problem that as a society we see the fundamentals of nudity between different sets of genitalia so drastically different. Creating this division in film also goes to enforce the idea that there is something inherently wrong with the nude human body. In the ‘French girls’ scene from “Titanic,” Rose’s body is treated with complete respect and decency in a way that highlights how beautiful nudity can be in the right context. If we had more exposure to male nudity in the same kind of non-sexual and considerate way, we would be more inclined to talk about sexuality on a wider scale and close the gap between female empowerment and male taboo. It’s time for the film and rating industry to wake up and realize that our bodies are nothing to be ashamed of because nudity is one of the few things that is almost completely universal. lationship –– the less likely you are to get hurt. I’ve had rejection thrown in my face by men who just want to hook up with me when I say ‘No, I’m looking for a boyfriend.’ And that’s okay, too. I’d rather be let down upfront than get attached to someone who doesn’t share my intentions. What’s not okay is when people reject me because of my body count or because I was upfront about my intentions. It is OK to want casual sex. We should not shame people who aren’t ready for commitment, because they have sexual needs, too. And it is OK to want a committed partner as well. I’ve heard time and time again, “You should wait for the right guy to come and find you.” But I am not a princess waiting in a castle for my prince charming to come rescue me, I am a grown woman and I am very capable of going out and finding him myself. I just might have to kiss a few frogs first. I am happy and safe with my lifestyle and anyone who disagrees will be shown the door. I have wasted far too much of my life worrying whether people thought I was “slutty” or a “wh--e.” But for now, I’m busy sorting through all these boyfriend applications. DJ AJ ’s sensational 69 ‘Boombox Guy’s’ 69 songs for sex

AJ FRANKLIN

Editor’s Note: AJ Franklin’s music persona goes by two names: he calls himself DJ AJ but the campus knows him as “Boombox Guy.” Franklin captured the campus’ attention last semester after showing up to class with a JBL boombox in each hand, blasting music for all to hear. In honor of our annual Sex Issue, we asked Franklin to put together a “sexy song playlist.” Here is what DJ AJ calls a “list of nostalgic R&B, sexy soca/ afrobeat and some heat that you haven’t heard yet. Whatever order you think these songs should be in is right, whatever makes you happy.” Email: news@ubspectrum.com

Protect yourself Implant A guide to all things contraception

REILLY MULLEN

ASST. NEWS EDITOR

With STD rates on the rise, students may need a refresher on their middle school “sex-ed” classes. Students are having unprotected sex ––according to The Spectrum‘s sex survey, 23.3% of students who are sexually active say they do not use any form of contraception –– leaving them vulnerable to sexually-transmitted disease diagnoses and unwanted pregnancies. UB offers several types of contraceptives to students for free. All you have to do is schedule an appointment at Michael Hall –– which offers free STD and pregnancy testing –– to find out what best fits your needs. Emergency contraceptives, like Plan B, are available on North and South Campus, but they aren’t cheap. In case you need a little guidance, we’ve compiled a list of contraceptives to help you choose what’s right for you.

$1,300 or free with most insurance

There are several types of birth control implants including intrauterine devices (IUDs) and out-of-uterine implants. IUDs are inserted into the uterine wall and can be left there for three to twelve years, depending on the brand. Out-of-uterine implants are generally inserted into a woman’s upper arm. Implants are an effective contraceptive for preventing pregnancy, but they do not prevent STDs. IUDs fail to prevent pregnancy around 0.8% of the time and arm implants fail about 0.01% of the time, according to the CDC. Both types of implants can be prescribed and inserted by UB Health Services. Students can schedule consultation appointments to determine which type works best for them online on the Student Life website.

Condoms Free at Michael Hall

Condoms have a bad reputation for “decreasing sexual pleasure,” but are an effective and economically safe tool to protect from unwanted pregnancies and STDs. Plus, even if you use other methods of birth control like the pill, without condoms you’re still unprotected from STDs. Campus residents can order sex supplies for free –– such as condoms, dental dams and personal lubricant –– through UB’s Student Life website. Student Life delivers the supplies to your mailbox in an unmarked manilla envelope. For non-campus residents, they are available for pick up at Michael Hall. While relatively effective and cheap, condoms don’t guarantee safety. Condoms have a roughly 13% failure rate, according to the CDC. Vindhya Burugupalli | The Spectrum Condoms at CVS.

Patch

$30/month or free with most insurance

Birth control patches are sticky patches that can be applied to a woman’s stomach, back or arms and release progesterone and estrogen into the bloodstream, which help prevent pregnancy. The patch must be changed once a week for three weeks and not worn on the fourth week of each cycle. Birth control patches are an effective method to prevent pregnancy, but do not prevent STDs. According to the CDC, birth control patches fail to prevent pregnancy around 7% of the time. The patch requires a prescription from a doctor.

Injection or “shot” $75/shot or free with most insurance

Progestin injections, commonly known as “the shot,” is an effective form of birth control. Injections are administered by a doctor every three months, which can be inconvenient for some students because they’ll need to schedule and attend regular appointments. If a student’s primary care doctor’s office is not located close to their university, they must register at a new doctor’s office to receive the doses. “The shot” is an effective method for preventing pregnancy, but it does not prevent STDs. “The shot” fails to prevent pregnancy around 4% of the time, according to the CDC.

Women’s basketball drops third-straight game Toledo’s shooting races past the Bulls Saturday afternoon EMILY BORJA ALEX LENNEBERG SPORTS DESK

UB women’s basketball (13-8) dropped its third-straight game to the Toledo Rockets (11-10) at Alumni Arena Saturday, falling 78-62. With the loss, the Bulls drop to third place in the MAC East. The first half was competitive, as the Bulls kept the difference to single digits

for the majority. The half concluded with the Rockets up 35-27 after Rockets guard Sophia Wiard nailed a half-court shot to beat the halftime buzzer for the highlight play of the afternoon, along with the fan who hit a half-court shot after the third quarter to win 12 medium pizzas. After halftime, the Rockets pulled away. The Bulls cut it to a one-point game early in the third before the Rockets hit 4 3-pointers and took a 63-45 lead into the fourth quarter. During this stretch, coach Felisha Legette-Jack was hit with a technical foul after confronting a referee. After the game, she said this was because of her

“demonstrative nature” when talking to the referee. “I tried telling him that, ‘We are the youngest team in the country, please help them get better.’ [He said] the way I moved my arms was wrong, so I should figure out if I can ask the administration to give me a straight jacket,” Jack said. “If I have to get a technical to try to get some pulse in these guys, I’ll do it.” The fourth quarter wasn’t much better for the Bulls. They didn’t build momentum or get within striking distance and the game seemed over halfway through the quarter. The teams differed offensively through-

ubspectrum.com out the contest. The Rockets hit 50% (1020) of their 3-point shots, whereas the Bulls made 29% (6-21) of theirs. “Hitting shots gives you more energy, but when you miss shots, it takes energy away. We missed a lot of shots that we usually make,” Legette-Jack said. “It’s just one of those games.” After her team lost its third-straight game, Legette-Jack is willing to try anything to get UB back in a rhythm. “I don’t know. Maybe I’ll tickle them. I’m open for suggestions to help this team learn and grow.” The Bulls will look to rebound on Wednesday night when they travel to Kalamazoo, MI to take on Western Michigan (11-10). Football hauls in 131st-ranked recruiting class Lance Leipold ‘excited,’ despite slide in rankings JUSTIN WEISS SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

The numbers are in, and they aren’t pretty. The 2020 UB football recruiting class ranks 131st in the country, a 25-place drop from last year, according to 247Sports. Buffalo solidified its 2020 class with four commitments on National Signing Day. This rounded out a 17-member class, which includes eight players who enrolled early in January.

“We’re excited about this group,” head coach Lance Leipold said in a press release. “It’s talented. We’ve hit on all positions for the most part at this time. As you see these guys being a part of our future, it’s an exciting time and an exciting day.” Leipold may be taking a positive approach, but the Bulls alarmingly still reigned in the lowest-ranked class in the Mid-American Conference. In 2018, the Bulls set a program-record with 10 wins. Last August, they opened a $15.5 million fieldhouse. In late December, they earned their first-ever bowl win, a 31-9 victory over UNC Charlotte in The Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl. Despite these seemingly positive figures

and program milestones, the Bulls were still out-recruited by conference foe Akron, a program which finished with the worst record in Division 1-A last season. This is a worrying sign for the Bulls as they try to build on the successes of the last two seasons. The Bulls’ 2020 class includes nine three-star recruits, seven two-star recruits and one transfer, according to 247Sports. Defensive tackle George Wolo is the Bulls’ highest-rated recruit. He had seven Division-I offers, including from Florida Atlantic and Toledo. At 6’5”, 200 lb., weak-side defensive end Bryce Johnson-Maith is a big-bodied lineman and the Bulls’ second biggest get. The

Bulls successfully obtained three defensive linemen this recruiting cycle, addressing it as a position of need. Quarterback Casey Case will likely compete for the starting spot in the 2022 season. He is 6’6” and 195 lb., which fits the mold of big-bodied quarterbacks that Leipold has targeted. Hailing from the Sunshine State, Case also had offers from Stetson University and Wagner College. Offensive guard Ray Thomas-Ishman transferred as a graduate student from the University of Massachusetts. He was a three-year starter for the Minutemen, and was named to the Preseason All-Independent First Team and to the Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch List prior to the 2019 season. Over the past few years, the Bulls have struggled to attract top talent to the Queen City, but have been effective in developing their players — since 2018, they have landed 23 players on a MAC all-conference team. Former UB standouts like Khalil Mack, James O’Hagan and K.J. Osborn were all two-star recruits. The Bulls have only landed one four-star recruit in their history, according to 247Sports. It’s unclear why the Bulls have struggled to attract top talent. Recruiting coordinator Rob Ianello — who served in the same role at the University of Kansas and Notre Dame — is considered a maestro. The Bulls have improved every year under the current coaching staff. The university has invested considerable amounts of money into football facilities. Still, the Bulls have failed to make the Queen City a desirable destination. They will need to work on that if they wish to sustain long-term success.
