What are we doing here?
to focus more on the social aspects of college instead of academics.” According to the book “Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses,” when college students were polled on how they spend their time in a 168-hour week, an average of 51 percent of their time was dedicated to socializing and recreating. Seven percent of time was allocated to studying. However, socializing is not the only cause receiving blame. Additional research performed in the CLA study showed that 35 percent of students reported spending five or fewer hours per week studying alone. Instead, the push toward “group study” and collaborative work has left students with lower gains in learning. Sims and Davis agree there are steps that can be taken to be proactive against this trend in college academics. First, Sims says that setting a higher academic standard for freshman students early in their first semester could aide in preventing the tendency Lance Teasley, a typical freshman, overwhelmed with of many students to get accus- the pressures of papers versus free time. tomed to a particular studying technique. Another element crucial to offsetting this trend can be found in reassessing the core curriculum colleges and universities require of undergraduate students. Davis believes the learning outcomes achieved in the core curriculum requirements at Spring Hill will benefit students in showing gains in learning. Because of the broad range of classes and learning opportunities the curriculum exposes students to, along with the mission-driven purpose found in the Jesuit mission, Davis predicts Spring Hill students will be at an advantage as compared to students at universities who have a less structured core Chrissy Franco takes a nap after a long day of classes. curriculum.

Almost half of the nation’s undergraduate students show no gains in learning after their first two years of college, according to results from recent surveys and standardized test scores from the Collegiate Learning Assessment. Reports released from the CLA, a standardized testing service that evaluates students’ abilities in critical thinking, reasoning and writing, show that after two years of college, 45 percent of undergraduates showed no significant gains in learning. Approximately 36 percent showed little change after four years. According to the research, college students are spending 50 percent less time studying than students did a few decades ago. It also discovered on average, students earned a grade-point average of 3.2. With this information, many colleges and universities are concerned that students are graduating college without investing adequate effort or reaching full academic potential. This growing problem has left college administrators with the task of determining both what the cause of this issue is and how to prevent it. According to Dr. George Sims, provost of Spring Hill College, before new measures can be put into action to counteract this learning deficiency, the most accurate assessment of the learning outcomes must be determined. Sims fears current measurement techniques may not produce precise results. “When we ask graduating seniors to take an assessment test that is not connected to a class and does not affect a grade, it is difficult for us to expect to get their best work,” said Sims. Instead, he suggests testing must be performed by a method that
can ensure students are putting forth their best effort. Consequently, college administrators are looking to pinpoint the cause or causes behind these new statistics to better determine how to tackle the problem. One of the causes several professors and other research analysts have cited is the influence collegiate institutions have placed on students in their first two years to develop socially in their new environment. According to Dr. Margaret Davis, English professor and Director of Core Curriculum at Spring Hill, finding a balance between the focus placed on the academic and social sectors is crucial. Davis says the number of students who come to class prepared and committed to learning in the classroom environment is too few. “I think most of my colleagues would agree with me that our students are not as interested in the academic aspect of their college experience as we would hope, that social activities claim too much of their attention,” said Davis. “While there are multiple and wonderful exceptions, I fear that the student culture on this campus in general does not value academic achievement at its highest level.” Several Spring Hill students agree that the social pressures and tendencies present in the first two years of college hinder the proper allocation of time and dedication to academics. Sophomore Alan Corder attributes this disconnect to a misperception of the purpose and expectations of college students in today’s society. “More and more incoming college students believe college is a place to party instead of a place to learn,” said Corder. “In many cases, college is the first time a person has real freedom and that new freedom can lead them

The Boys and Girls Clubs of South Alabama participated in the Mobile Area Rugby Foundation’s premiere event at Dorn Field last Saturday. Senior Caitlin Teahan successfully planned, organized, and facilitated the ‘Ready for Rugby!’ event which took ‘at risk’ youths out of the neighborhood and brought them to the field. Teahan designed the event for her senior seminar project and plans to present her project at the Research Symposium. As the event kicked off, the kids learned drills, passes, and skills which encouraged them to work together as teammates. Teahan stated that the event allowed for the kids to open up to new experiences which promoted sportsmanship as well as respect for authority figures. Teahan noted that all of the rugby equipment was donated to the Boys and Girls Club so that they can continue with the program. The foundations vision is to promote rugby as a beneficial sport that can
provide the kids with an active way to interact with their friends and neighbors. The Mobile Area Rugby Foundation is a non-profit organization that has sprung to life under Teahan’s hard work. Teahan has designed the foundation’s logo, brochures, information sheets, press releases, and has even set up a website for the foundation, www. mobilerugby.org. During lunch, the kids enjoyed food and drinks that were donated by Hungry Howie’s Pizza, Lenny’s Sub Shop, and Bruno’s Grocery. In addition to the rugby equipment, the Mobile Area Rugby Foundation also provided the kids with t-shirts made possible through Teahan’s preparation and design. As the event wrapped up, the kids signed two rugby balls, commemorating the foundation’s first event as well as the club’s team effort. Overall, Teahan was excited about the event’s turn out. “Ready for Rugby!” not only gave the foundation a jump start, but it also gave the kids a lot of tools and experience to take back with them.

Professional Procrastinator AliciaREEVES co-editor In May, I will receive my B.A. in Graphic Design and minors in both Studio Art and English. However, after my four years in college, I can now proclaim myself as a professional, a professional procrastinator. Too bad I can’t put that on my resume. The word procrastinate
sounds like such a bad thing, but in my defense I would just like to say it is not always such a bad thing. If you’re a good procrastinator, like myself, one can procrastinate, get the job done, and still do the job well, all within the deadline. So if you haven’t quite mastered this yet, keep on keeping on, and you too can be a professional procrastinator by the end of your
four years. To those who have reached my level of expertise, here’s a toast to you. To the procrastinators who have ever seen the sunrise after working all night. To the always says yes to the midnight food run. To socializing and drinking beer with friends instead of studying for your 8a.m. final, and to those who study at the beach. I salute you.

In last week’s edition of The SpringHillian, in my “Top 5 Picks,” I discussed my personal picks for the most over rated rappers, and I was unfortunately scrutinized for my picks. I do not have any issue with having disagreement with my top picks, but there are certain ways to go about it. Posting to a person’s Facebook is not a suitable way of critique. I understand publishing my thoughts in a public forum will lead to some critique; however, as a journalist, I would hope the reading public would keep it classier when disagreeing with some of the things I or my staff may say. So, next time you take offense to my or one of my staff member’s opinions, please read the Submissions Policy listed below and follow the correct procedure. We would love to have our e-mail flooded with “Letters to the Editors,” for we are here to report on the extraordinary lives of Spring Hill College students, faculty and campus community.

his one true love, Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright). Elwes faces everything thrown at him by Prince Humperdinck and refuses to give up on true love. This film is more than a children’s story and can be summed up in the line “Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.” – Westley. For those of you riding the single bus this Valentine’s Day, here are five DVDs worth watching and sure to provide you with some entertainment. 500 Days of Summer (2009) is a film about Tom Hansen, a greeting card designer, who believes deeply in love. The story revolves around his experience when he meets and falls for a girl named Summer Finn, played by Zooey Deschanel. Summer unfortunately doesn’t believe in love. The film is an offbeat romantic comedy perfect for a night in. It is very quirky and defiantly a role reversal for ideas on love. If you’re looking for something different in the romantic comedy category this is it. Garden State (2004) is a quirky film about Andrew Largeman, played by Zach Braff. When he returns home to New Jersey after being away for nine years he meets a unique girl name Sam, played by Natalie Portman. Sam is a colorful explosion while Andrew is a dark morbid character in need of a colorful blast. Portman and Braff complement each other well in the film. If you’re looking

Other days, I just smile to myself and think ‘Yep, SNAFU.’ I think that can be an easy pit to fall into, especially work-

Swimfan (2002) is an intense film about Ben Cronin (Jessie Bradford) who is a high school senior with the perfect girlfriend, Amy Miller (Shiri Appleby). Ben is on the verge of a college swim career, but when he has a one night stand with Madison Bell (Erika Christensen) his world gets turned upside down. Closer (2004) is a film about deceitful lust at first sight in which Dan (Jude Law), a writer can’t make up his mind between Alice (Natalie Portman), a part-time stripper and Anna (Julia Roberts), a photographer. In this story Anna cannot decide if she wants Dan or Larry (Clive Owen). The couples swap partners while remaining together and it is one deceitful hurtful bash in which they must eventually decided whether to keep up the shenanigans or finally break it off and have an honest relationship. ing with students. We get so caught up in the mission for student development, that we begin to only focus on the negative. We see where we are failing, but not where we are succeeding. SHC has high ideals that can be difficult to live up to at times. Sometimes, it is easier to just lose control or give up on each other. But we have to remember our integrity and our commitment to developmental and spiritual growth in each other. One of those positive moments, which brings me such great pride to be part of this SHC community, was during a programming event. The
service program involved a 50/50 raffle in which half of the proceeds benefited a local homeless shelter and the other half would go to the winning ticket holder. When I contacted the winner of the raffle to set-up a time to give this student her half of the collected money, she turned it down and stated that she wanted her share to go to the shelter as well. It was quite a bit of money that she, without hesitation, gladly gave away to those who were less fortunate than her. That is my Spring Hill. It is up to all of us to recognize and carry on that positive spirit of The Hill.
Date Rape: Caught off gaurd
KatelynGARDNER News Editor
“Call it date rape, call it acquaintance rape, or just call it what it is, rape; whatever you call it, it’s a crime and it is committed at a shocking rate of every two minutes in North America,” stated Mike Hardcastle in his article “What Every Guy Must Know About Date Rape.” First off, students should keep in mind that sexual assault type behavior is not random said Lynda Olen, Wellness Center Counselor. Olen stated that the majority of the cases involving date rape center around one thing: alcohol. With the influx of alcohol on campus, students need to heighten their awareness and curb their drinks. If you go to a party, make sure you take a friend. Also, remember to keep track of your alcohol intake so you are less susceptible to the threat of rape. Olen stated “be vigilant of your drinks and your environment,” reminding students that “alcohol is
more likely to be involved rather than force” when it comes to date rape. “When date rape does occur, there are long-term consequences for both the perpetrator and the victim,” stated Olen. Impulsivity and bad decisions override any previous ethical or moral standards of both parties once alcohol comes into the equation. Hardcastle reminds his readers that “no means no.” Whether it is verbal or physical, if a girl signals that the gesture is unwanted, the guy should immediately stop. In the same sense, rape can also occur between samesex couples. Therefore, everyone is affected by date rape, not just women. The overall message is to always be aware. Even though the atmosphere is fun and comforting, the situation can spin out of control, especially when both people involved have been drinking all night. For more info visit about.com/daterape

Lombardi heads back to Titletown JoeROWE Sports Reporter Trailing 21-17, the Pittsburgh Steelers were driving deep into Green Bay Packer territory, and it appeared that they were on their way to coming back and winning another Super Bowl in dramatic fashion. However, Clay Matthews forced a Rashard Mendenhall fumble and Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers drove the Packers down the field for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown, an 8-yard pass to Greg Jennings. Rodgers, who was 24-39 for 304 yards, threw three touchdowns and no interceptions as the Packers photo by Keli Mazza beat the Steelers 31-25. first quarter to open the scoring. He out-dueled his counterpart and twotime Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger, whose two costly interceptions led to 14 Green Bay points. The first of these came in the first quarter, and resulted in Green Bay’s second score, a 37-yard interception return by Nick Collins, which put Green Bay up 14-0. The Packers extended their lead to 21-3 when Rodgers connected with Jennings for a 21-yard touchdown with 2:24 left in the first half. This touchdown drive came on the heels of Jerrod Bush’s interception of a Roethlisberger pass near midfield. Just when it seemed that the Steelers were going to be blown out, Roethlisberger guided a near perfect two minute drill and threw an 8-yard touchdown to Hines Ward
with 39 seconds left in the first half, cutting the Packers lead to 21-10. Mendenhall scored on an 8-yard run to cut the Packer’s lead to 2117 before his fumble and Rodger’s touchdown pass made the score 28-17. Pittsburgh scored again and made a two point conversion, but the Packers drove down the field and ate up most of the clock, converting a couple key third downs to keep the clock moving, eventually kicking a field goal with 2:07 left in the game to go up 31-25. Pittsburgh got the ball left and had one last chance, but on 4th and 5 from their own 33, Roethlisberger threw incomplete to Mike Wallace, ending the Steelers hopes for a third Super Bowl title in five years and bringing the Lombardi Trophy back to “Titletown.”

Super lame commercials MattBOSARGE Sports Editor
In this country, a common habit during the Super Bowl has been if you have to get up and use the restroom, do it during the game, not during the commercials. This year, that would have been a mistake. Considering how much money companies put into Super Bowl ads that usually last no longer than 30 seconds, people’s expectations for these “short films” have sky-rocketed. Classics like Budweiser’s “Clydesdales” and Coke’s “Mean Joe Green” commercials have set the bar for other businesses that cough up enough dough
for a Super Bowl spot. The New York Daily News made a Top Five worst Super Bowl commercial list for 2011, and on the top of that list rested the Doritos “Finger-lickin good” ad. In what may go down as the creepiest commercial in Super Bowl History, a man licks another man’s finger that is covered in Doritos’ residue. No chip is good enough to make a sane human being lick another man’s finger. Other than the Darth Vader Volkswagen spot, where a little kid dressed up as Vader starts a Volkswagen by using “the force,” there wasn’t many commercials that received over-whelming positive feedback from critics. Although
I must say, I laughed pretty hard when Roseanne Barr got belted by a swinging log in the Snickers commercial. Overall, it was a weak year for Super Bowl commercials. Businesses seem to be going more for the cheap laughs such as crotch shots, and shock value such as Kim Kardashian walking around a gym in skimpy clothes (I honestly don’t remember what shoe she was selling, and neither does half of the American male population). Hopefully next year, the usual Super Bowl powerhouses such as Budweiser and Coca-Cola will get better. At this point, there is nowhere to go but up.
