E DITORIAL

Good day delegates! As our appointment with a MUN institution comes to its end, it is useful to evaluate the legacy it leaves behind. Apart from useful experience on negotiations

techniques or getting to know with the United Nations system, Models UN have a lasting effect through the bonds of friendship created among participants. Friendships open new horizons, enrich one’s personality; they shape our lives. Such a great friendship worths making headlines in the Daily News, as two girls, one from Egypt and the other from England chose ThessISMUN to be their meeting point after years away from each other!

Before closing our channel of communication, the editor wishes to express his gratitude to Dr. Perraki, for the opportunity to participate in the Greek MUN. Many thanks to all journalists and photographers for their copious efforts, special reference to my great Co-Editor Olgawithout her this newspaper would have never seen the light of day- and our photographer Margarita, who was nonstop shooting, selecting and uploading photos! Last but not

least, this issue is dedicated to Ms. Kiki, who has been printing the Daily News, patiently waiting for us every day. Thank you all for the great job you have done, you are the soul of ThessISMUN! Wishing you all the best, Vangelis

HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL The fourth day has come to an end, as well as the “debate” days of ThessISMUN 2012. The Human Rights Committee discussed in detail the second topic of the agenda, namely the “The protection of children from school violence”, that was introduced the day before, in numerous longlasting unmoderated caucuses. Finally, the draft resolution that was sponsored by Nigeria passed with 37 votes in favor and the comments about the efficiency of the solutions, that were proposed, were really sub-

sidiary. Furthermore, the Funny Awards

Last but not least, there was a motion to extend the debate on next week too, as no delegate wished to leave this MUN experience, but unfortunately it wasn’t in order. And that’s how Human Rights Committee in ThessISMUN 2012 concluded its sessions. Hope to see you again next year!

and formulating clauses, constantly pressured by time. Soon enough, two working papers emerged, having as their major difference their approach considering a nuclear shield for the region by the P5 states and the establishment of a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone. The delegates agreed to merge the two papers into one, a process that was time consuming and was even characterized as radical in some points by the UN Secretariat, which inter-

into consideration. Also to avoid the costs of peacekeeping, new financial sources can be supplied by more efficient international cooperation” was stated. After the lunch break, four working papers were submitted. In the last session, severe discussions took place among Germany, USA, UK, Egypt, Denmark and Portugal. The highlights of the discussions were UK’s and USA’s proposals about amendments. In the draft resolution, it has been suggested to re-assess the personnel deployed to regions where the situation is estimated to be under control. Moreover,

The fourth day of the conference started at 12 o' clock , luckily for the delegates who did not sleep early the previous night due to the social event at Figaro. The first motion proposed after the roll call was the one for a moderated caucus, which was later on followed by an unmoderated one, in order for the delegates to discuss on the second topic area( the protection of personal data in web related activities) and start writing a working paper. The time given to the delegates for the completion of the draft working paper was limited, but they managed to finish on time. After the secretariat recognised the draft working paper, the Council of Europe voted unanimously in favour of the resolution. In the end of the session, all delegations voted for the funny awards and the committee really enjoyed it! Finally, some delegates and members of the board had brought cameras and took pictures.

S ECURITY C OUNCIL

And so it is. We’ve come to the final solution. The only possible solution for the honorable Security Council and its high skilled delegates. On the last day of ThessISMUN2012, fun and high mood followed accuracy and effectiveness. Apart from the diplomatic episode

ATLANTIC COUNCIL

Saturday evening found the North Atlantic Council in a very good mood as the resolution was finally delivered and given to Board, although the session didn’t start exactly with a lot of energy. Apparently last nights’ hangover didn’t help a lot the delegates and as the Secretary General said, “alcohol is the solution to hangover”(!!). The Board tried to relax delegates and cheer the mood by announcing the pro-

cedure and the nominations of the funny awards. After the lunch break, all delegates gave their best so that they could Discuss, Decide and Deliver the second draft communiqué to the Secretariat and after that to the Board. Delegates managed to finish the working draft in time, just to make sure that there wouldn’t be any problems. The voting procedure showed that this time delegates had more experience on how to write and present the draft of the topic area A regarding NATO and the civil protection. Unmoderated caucuses have been honored at this session too. North Atlantic Council was the first council

Moreover this particular session found 3 delegates(United Kingdom, Estonia and Slovakia) with the diplomatic warning as they used words and attitudes that weren’t in order of the NATO policy and also that could insult other delegates. At the end of the session, the House excited with the results of their efforts, congratulated all the delegates and wrote on each other placards wishes and notes regarding their 11th MUN experience.

SECURITY COUNCIL

The last day of negotiations began at 12 o’clock, taking into consideration last night’s amazing Figaro party! Delegates were on time, apart from France, whose delegate arrived 40 minutes later. Chair Mr.Xenokratis was for one more time very strict towards delegates and also gave a diplomatic warning to North Korea. All in all, the debate resulted in a draft resolution that did not satisfy all delegations and for this reason negotiations will continue until Sunday. At the beginning of the session, an announcement by the President of the US was announced, which explains that if North Korea’s

armed forces do not withdraw from the South Korean territory in 24 hours, USA military is going to intervene. Today’s crisis

contained one more crisis: Soviet Union navy patrolling at Japan Sea. North Korea delegate stated that they do not intend to retreat to the 38 parallel unless her demands are satisfied. The draft resolution which

The five permanent members used their “veto power” and did not accept the amendments. Finally North Korea stated that a “fair civil class struggle” is waged against ROK’s civil class, that they are afraid of USA’s unilateral invasion and that they will receive unequal treatment during the negotiations if they withdraw their troops.

Wise board proposes specific moderate caucuses where the delegation of Nigeria was remarkable for sticking strictly to the point and passionately defending her ideas. The first unmoderate caucus hosted hard-working dele-

gates and five great working papers had been prepared. Eloquent speeches and convincing skills combined all of them into one draft sponsored by U.S.A who proved their diplomatic talent once again. Time pressure, however, led ECOSOC to serious mistakes about the Draft. Secretary-General himself pointed them out and suggested solutions. U.S.A took the responsibility for this and the council, as a bounded team cooperating in order to withdraw mistakes from the Draft. ECOSOC will be well remembered for its great cooperation and respect.
