Trick Training Heaps of fun - have your bag of treats at the ready. Google for some great inspiration, but start with something simple. For very ‘tactile’ horses, teaching your horse to touch objects, or to ‘smile’ (flehmen response) can be great first steps. Reward and repitition is the key!

Go For A Picnic
Home Bake Horse Treats & do a ‘taste test’ challenge!
Pick a destination, pack sandwiches, water bucket, chaff, apples and carrots and set off on a picnic adventure. (No riding, so you’ll have to carry the backpack yourself... unless you bareback it to your destination...)
Every horse would love for you to spend a day feeding them treats. Give in; do a taste test challenge! Stick to foods you know are safe (and preferably healthy) for your horses. Apples, carrots, molasses, very small amounts of bread, and sugar cubes. For something a little different, try something from our list below. Just remember to feed in small amounts - they are a treat, nothing more! • Grapes • Mangoes • Oranges • Peaches • Pears
• Pineapple • Plums • Sultanas • Strawberries • Alfalfa Sprouts
NOTE: Please AVOID: Avacado, onions, potato, rhubarb, tomatoes, capsicum, chilli, broccoli, persimmon and cauliflower.
Better yet, have a crack at making your own horse treats. We found some online at http://www.aboutyourhorse.com/easy-make-horse-treat-recipes

Don’t you en... hate it wh You evict an agistee for not taking care of her pony. You’ve exhausted all avenues to help the horse; involved the vet and appropriate animal authorities - and so kicking her out was the last option... EQUINENEWS
Horses of the Houston Floods The floods that recently once again devastated areas of Houston saw over 100 horses at The Cypress Trails Equestrian Centre lost within the rising waters. Some of the horses managed to swim to a neighbouring property and found high ground while others, some even tethered were left with very little chance of surviving. Hundreds of locals arrived at the scene to assist in recovering the animals that had been left behind and it is believed that up to 16 people also needed to be pulled from the raging waters in their attempts to help. One Grey horse was thought to have drowned when it was submerged after becoming entangled in debris, with a twist of fate the horse emerged bursting through the waters and scaled the concrete embankment to safety.

NUTRITIONNEWS
The Fight Against Free Rad What are free radicals? Imagine the Joker from Batman - an insane supervillain who leaves a trail of destruction in Gotham City. Likewise, free radicals are unstable, highly reactive “bad guys” that travel around the horse’s body and have the potential to cause irreparable damage to cells and cell membranes.
• Scavenging free radicals • Decreasing the conversion of less-reactive free radicals to more-reactive free radicals • Facilitating the repair of damage caused by free radicals • Providing an environment favourable for activity of other antioxidants
Free radicals are unstable because they have an unpaired electron. While the Joker lacks a conscience and destroys things for no reason, free radicals are simply on the hunt for electrons in the attempt to achieve stability. If left unchecked, free radicals can leave behind a wreckage of damaged cells resulting in muscle soreness, fatigue and illness.
When the superheroes fail
Why do free radicals form?
When do horses benefit from antioxidant supplementation?
Oxidation is a normal metabolic process that allows horses to convert the carbohydrates, fats and proteins they consume into the energy they require for growth, reproduction and performance. An unavoidable byproduct of oxidation is the creation of free radicals. Whether your horse is eating, breathing or sleeping, its body is producing free radicals. Think of them as a necessary evil – under normal maintenance conditions they are required for proper function of the immune system, as they aid in the destruction of invading organisms, but excess levels can cause damage to vital tissues. Factors that can cause an increase in the horse’s metabolism, such as stress, exercise, growth, pregnancy, disease or injury, may increase the number of free radicals produced. In these situations, adequate supplementation with antioxidants through the diet is crucial.
Superheroes to the rescue!
Antioxidants are superhero nutrients that help to defend the horse’s body against oxidative stress. They are the Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman – what have you! When unmasked, their (not so secret) identities are vitamin E, vitamin C and selenium. These potent antioxidants work together to combat serious damage from free radicals.
14
Antioxidants are interrelated and may prevent oxidant damage in several ways:
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
While it is rare for a comic book superhero to fail, sometimes they just aren’t strong enough. For example, when we ask our horses to work hard we are unleashing a cascade of free radicals in the body, which can quickly overwhelm the horse’s natural store of antioxidants if dietary supply is inadequate.
Race or performance horses – aid in reducing muscle damage following exercise. Horses recovering from illness or injury – increased metabolism during illness or injury increases the number of free radicals produced. Prior to or following stressful events such as foaling, weaning or travel – provide immune support for stressed horses. Horses with neurological or neuromuscular disease – stringhalt, shivers, tying up, etc. Breeding horses – may positively improve fertility in broodmares and increase passive transfer of antibodies to foals. Stallions suffering from sperm motility problems may benefit from supplementation with vitamin E and selenium. Horses in confinement or those not receiving fresh green grass. Kentucky Equine Research has two high quality supplements to provide antioxidant support.
KER Preserve is a scientifically formulated source of natural vitamin E and organic selenium, as well as vitamin C and magnesium.
dicals VITAMIN E • Vitamin E cannot be synthesised in the horse, and is therefore an essential dietary nutrient. • Horses grazing adequate fresh pasture usually consume enough vitamin E to meet their daily requirements. • Vitamin E is quickly lost as forage becomes dormant or is dried and stored as hay. • There are two forms of vitamin E – natural (d-alpha-tocopherol) and synthetic (dl-alpha-tocopherol). The natural form has superior bioavailability.
d Vitamin E an selenium are ked! intricately lin
Vitamins E and C have a synergistic relationship!
SELENIUM
VITAMIN C
• Selenium helps to prevent free radicals from forming into lipid peroxides, which can potentially damage cell membranes.
• Vitamin C plays a pivotal role in neutralising free radicals.
• Selenium works in the intracellular fluid to remove the free radicals that form, while vitamin E works in the cell membrane to decrease the formation of free radicals
• Under normal circumstances the liver synthesises sufficient quantities of vitamin C, but periods of stress can cause levels to drop.
• Organic (natural) selenium is research proven to be more bioavailable than inorganic forms.
• Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that can work both inside and outside the cell.
• Deficiencies of one of these nutrients can be compensated for if there is an adequate supply of the other.
• In the presence of vitamin C, vitamin E can be regenerated and continue its raid on free radicals.
Preserve is a great broad spectrum antioxidant supplement for your horse to provide the support it needs.
KERx Nano E is a potent source of liquid natural vitamin E that uses revolutionary nanotechnology to allow for optimum bioavailability to the horse. As mentioned, vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin and is therefore hydrophobic (water-shunning) due to its oily nature, which means it has to go through a series of steps before it can be utilised by the body. Nano E uses proprietary technology to encapsulate natural vitamin E in nanoparticles. Each nanoparticle is then surrounded with a hydrophilic (water-loving) outer later. The hydrophilic layer allows nanoparticles
to be rapidly and evenly released in the horse’s gastrointestinal tract for increased absorption. Supplementation with Nano E is research proven to not only result in a greater peak in serum vitamin E, but also generate a more sustained rise in serum vitamin E status. This is particularly beneficial for eventing and endurance horses that require long-acting antioxidant support.
For more information on antioxidants and how to ensure your horse is receiving optimum amounts in their diet, contact KER on 1800 772 198 or advice@ker.com.

FEINEWS
TEAM USA WINS OPENING LE
OFFICIAL FEI NATIONS CUP™ DRES
T
eam USA got off to a flying start in the FEI Nations Cup™ Dressage 2016 series with a convincing victory on home turf in Wellington, Florida. From a field of six nations they finished more than 25 percentage points ahead of their nearest rivals from Canada, while Spain lined up third ahead of
Denmark in fourth, Costa Rica in fifth and Australia in sixth place. “I’m extremely proud that the US won this Nations Cup again this year”, Chef d’Equipe Robert Dover said afterwards. “Even more importantly, I was hoping for our riders to achieve personal bests and to do better than they have been doing this season, and with each class grow more confident as we head towards Europe and the Olympics. That’s what I’m seeing from the riders both in this Nations Cup and the riders who were so wonderful in the FEI Grand Prix CDI 3*. I couldn’t be more proud of all of them!” This is the first official FEI Nations Cup™ Dressage series, following three seasons of development and polishing. The season will continue with legs at Odense (DEN) and Compiegne (FRA) in May, followed by Rotterdam (NED) in June and Falsterbo (SWE), Aachen (GER) and Hickstead (GBR) in July.
FORMAT
The FEI Nations Cup™ format permits teams composing both Big and Small Tour combinations, with Big Tour combinations receiving a 1.5% bonus to their scores. Spain and Costa Rice were represented by Small Tour combinations at the Wellington fixture while Australia, Canada and USA fielded Big Tour partnerships. Denmark entered a mixed team of Small and Big Tour riders and horses. America’s Laura Graves was the stand-out performer when posting personal best results in both Wednesday’s Grand Prix and again in Thursday’s Grand Prix Special. “I couldn’t be more thrilled”, Graves said after the two days of competition. “It’s been a long
18
season for us, and this is going to be a long competition (the FEI Nations Cup™ Dressage series). I’ll be pleased to take him home and give him a break before we go try to be even better in Europe”, Graves said of her 14-year-old Dutch-bred Verdades after firmly securing the US victory when posting 78.294 in the Special which rose to 79.794 with the added 1.5 percent bonus points. US team-mate, Kasey Perry-Glass also recorded a personal best with the 13-year-old gelding Goerklintgaards Dublet. “I was really proud of Dublet”, Perry-Glass said. “Yesterday was a little bit lacking expression, but I was able to push him harder today and really working towards going for it. I think that I have to remind myself that this is his first year (at this level of the sport), and he’s letting me have a conversation with him in the ring and push him more. I just want to keep him happy, and that’s my biggest goal.” Team USA pathfinders Arlene Page and Woodstock underpinned a really strong season with more solid scores. “We didn’t have a personal best here, but we’ve had two personal bests through the season and I’m proud of that”, Page said. Shelly Francis and Doktor have enjoyed a thoroughly consistent series of top placings this season, but had what she described as “a blank moment” in the Special yesterday. “Otherwise it was still a great week”, she said, “and it’s exciting that we get to be in first place and go up there and get that medal!”

FEINEWS CONCEPT Canada’s Belinda Trussell praised the creation and development of the FEI Nations Cup™ Dressage concept. “We’re thrilled to be second again and in great company. It’s wonderful to have a CDIO in North America with as many countries that are involved here. It is a gift that we have it in our continent and haven’t had that in the past. It’s developing each year and getting stronger, and that’s exciting. My team was great, and we felt proud to have four Grand Prix horses on the team. It was a really good Nations’ Cup for us”, she said. She was joined on the second step of the prize-giving podium by team-mates Jacqueline Brooks (D Niro), Megan Lane (Caravella) and Karen Pavicic (Don Daiquiri).
Juan Matute Jr led Spain to third place with victory in the Small Tour Intermediate I. He was joined in the Spanish side by Juan Antonio Jimenez Cobo (Lanzado de Ymas), Pablo Gomez Molina (Lanzado de Ymas) and Alfonso Jesus Ramirez Benitez (Legacy’s Cosmico). “My team and I are thrilled with the results. We managed to get on the podium which was always the goal,” he said. “As for Dhannie (his horse Dhannie Ymas) and I, I’m very pleased with the results. It’s been a great season and this week has been a great highlight for us. A 74.5% is a great score and a personal best for us. I’m super pleased and looking forward to the future!”

MUSICAL MATS It’s just like musical chairs! Use a circle of mats as chairs, make sure there’s one less than the number of riders playing. Either play music, or use a sound as the dismount signal (like a whistle!) Riders must keep control of their horses at all times, and lead them to the mats. The rider who doesn’t get a mat is out. Another mat is removed and the game goes on! To make it harder or more interesting, why not have riders ride bareback? Or try trotting or cantering around the mats to make dismounting a little bit more difficult!
BENDING Most riders will have tried this - bending involves weaving through a set of posts set up in a straight line. This race can also be played as a relay, and at different gaits for each rider, or individuals. The rider must go from point A, weave through the poles, turn around at point B - and weave back through the poles. The first individual rider or team back to point A wins. Bending is a very popular game, and usually is played in Mounted Games Pony Club competitions!
GAMES SACKs OF FUN
Start at point A and ride to point B - about 20 metres should be long enough. When the riders get to point B, they must dismount, get into a sack, and jump back to point A in the sack leading their horses. This is a great challenge of horse control! You can choose which gait the riders should ride at, or even make this sack race into a relay, where the first riders walk, the second trot, the third canter and the last gallop. The first team or rider back to point A is the winner!
LAUNDRY STAKES
N O O L L BA RACE
For this game, you need an item of loose clothing for each team - be it a large pair of pants, a coat, jumper, or strange hat. The first rider must begin unmounted, without the clothing item on. point B. a d n a When the starting order is given point A k to it, post at ns stuc a o o ’s ll - the rider must put on the clothing, e a r b e s er Th has . FISHING RACE
GYMKHANA
GAMES
For this race, you need a ‘fishing rod’, (a short wooden pole with a hook on the end) and some ‘fish’ - wooden cutouts with a metal ring sticking up from the mouth of the fish. Riders must be able to hook the fish somewhat easily from horseback. At point A, there needs to be a barrel or bin for the ‘caught’ fish. Riders must ride from point A to point B, hook a fish, and ride back. The rider hands the fishing rod to the second rider who does the same. The team back first with all the fish wins! You can also set gaits for each rider, but a gallop race makes for a very exciting finish!
STEPPING STONES There once again, needs to be a point A and B in this game, with ‘stepping stones’ set up halfway in a line. 10 stepping stones is a good number to have. Actual stones are not required - you need something a rider can safely dismount onto, so wooden blocks or mats are ideal, but must be placed each a step apart. Riders must ride from point A, dismount onto the first stepping stone, run along the line WITHOUT TOUCHING THE GROUND and mount from the last stepping stone. They then need to ride to point B, and then canter or gallop back to the group to tag the next rider, who in turn, completes the course! The first group with all riders back wins the race!

HANDY MOUNT
OR THE TRAIL CLASS This isn’t so much a race as a challenge, but it can be scored and timed if the organisers choose to do so. This involves the riders each competing individually through a course of varied obstacles. A small jump can also be included. Stepping stones can be an obstacles, as well as a mail bag a rider has to carry from one location to another on horseback. A hay bale obstacle is a great idea - the rider must direct the pony through the hay bales - one on either side without the pony taking a bite out of them. Trotting poles can also be used to create a narrow pathway for a pony to walk though, without stepping out of line! Other popular obstacles include a ditch to jump, tarp to walk over, and a water obstacle to walk through. Riders can also be tested on backing up into a small space, loading their ponies onto a float and unloading them safely, and opening and closing a gate while on horseback. Using ‘bunting’, streamers or balloons can make obstacles less appealing to ponies and horses, and the rider’s job more difficult! Each rider can be scored for each obstacle - and given a score card. For completing each obstacle successfully, they could score one point - the rider with the highest score wins! If more than one rider can get through all the obstacles with their horse, the rider with the quickest time for completing all the obstacles wins!

FLIP that hors L
egions of talented riders have found a niche turning homely, oft-neglected horses into show-worthy swans. While thorough under saddle training can take years of consistent work, achieving a sales-photo bloom from within can occur in as little as a few months with appropriate care and conditioning. Project horses usually come with one or more predictable disadvantages, some of which include weight or condition issues, marginal coat health, dubious hoof quality, and a history of negligible veterinary care. An orderly approach to rehabilitation and care will serve these horses well.
Step 1. Assemble the vet-farrier team. With a sketchy past, project horses often need a thorough once-over by a veterinarian, with special attention paid to the condition of their teeth. Floating, extractions, and other routine dental work can be done by the veterinarian or an accredited dentist. The veterinarian will likely recommend a fecal egg count to determine parasite load and will then advocate a deworming protocol that suits the horse, his new home, and the locale. Common skin diseases, including rainrot, ringworm, and scratches, should also be evaluated and a treatment plan established. Low-level infections such as these often respond well to omega-3 fatty acids, especially those that have the greatest biological activity, such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). EO•3 is a rich source of these omega-3 fatty acids.

instructions, as the lowest feeding rate ensures that minimal nutritional requirements are met. If fed below the recommended rate, the horse will not receive vitamins and minerals required for restoration of health.” If, on the other hand, the horse is in moderate body condition with no real need to lose or gain weight, offer forage at 1.5-2% of body weight and feed enough of a fortified concentrate to maintain condition, though within the manufacturer’s guidelines. For those horses that need to lose weight, implementation of various weight-reduction tools will help battle obesity: grazing muzzles, limited turnout in mediocre pasture, time in a drylot, methods to slow consumption of hay, and use of a ration balancer or a vitamin and mineral supplement such as Micro-Max to ensure best-case nutrition. Horse owners in Australia can depend upon Gold Pellet to deliver vital nutrients. Access to fresh water and a salt block will round out a balanced diet for all horses, regardless of body condition, recommended Whitehouse.
Step 3. Support gastrointestinal health. Maintaining gastrointestinal health is a prime consideration when elevating a horse’s care because, without a well-functioning digestive tract, horses will be unable to use nutrients supplied to them. One key to gastrointestinal tract health involves gut motility; horse owners can promote gut motility through free-choice access to forage for the majority of the day. Horse owners are able to nutritionally support two important compartments of the gastrointestinal tract, the stomach and the hindgut, through targeted supplementation. In natural settings, a combination of saliva and a continuous turnover of forage protect gastric mucosa. Horses managed in a way that includes long stretches without eating, colloquially called “meal feeding,” are susceptible to gastric ulceration, which can best be described as painful erosions in the mucosal lining of the stomach caused by overexposure to acid. A prescription-strength course of omeprazole will heal gastric ulcers,
but over-the-counter supplements can keep ulcers from returning. Hindgut acidosis can also adversely affect weight gain and health. The two primary triggers for hindgut acidosis are overconsumption of starch-laden concentrates or overindulgence in sugar-rich grasses. When too much starch is eaten, some bypasses the small intestine, where it is normally digested, and enters the hindgut. As the microorganisms of the hindgut process the starch, pH changes, which can cause damage to the intestinal lining and changes in appetite, feed efficiency, manure, behavior, and performance.
Step 4. Institute an exercise program. Once a horse’s veterinary, hoof care, and nutritional needs have been tackled, an appropriate exercise program can be planned. Keep in mind that structured work requires an outlay in energy, so if a project horse has arrived thin and underconditioned, weight gain will be slowed if an exercise component is added immediately. All performance goals should be set on a reasonable schedule with allowances for normal setbacks. Exercising a horse beyond its conditioning could cause injury. One way to plan and adhere to a safe, consistent exercise schedule is through the use of KER ClockIt Sport, a smartphone app that takes the guesswork out of conditioning. By tracking an individual horse’s intensity and duration of exercise, horse owners and trainers can condition and feed each horse appropriately for the work they’re actually performing.
A consistent feeding and conditioning program will bring out the best in a resale project. If you’re unsure how to best feed a fledging athlete, contact a KER nutrition advisor for a personal recommendation. Start the process now.

Buying your first, second, third or fortieth horse can be a trial - although there are ways to make this process a lot less painful, and a lot more rewarding. Here’s a step by step approach to finding your dream horse! Before You Rush In Before you even think about owning a horse of your own, or adding another to the collection (!) think about what the new horse will require, and honestly assess your situation. Not only is there the cost of the horse, but there’s the cost of agistment, medical treatments, shoeing, feed, etc. You also need all the equipment that’s necessary for the horse. You need a place to agist the horse, and you need the time to give your new horse the love and attention that he or she deserves! If you think you can provide all this.. then that’s not good enough! You need to know, without a doubt that all of these things can be arranged.
Finances - ‘equus costus muchus’ Although no one likes to think about them, they are important, especially for the care of horses. The cost of your new horse may be anywhere from $200 to $5000 or above! If you’re looking for your first horse, expect to pay no less than $1500 - you’ll definitely need something that’s ‘been there, jumped that’. A WORD OF WARNING: Cheap horses are NEVER cheap! While the purchase price of your horse might be a meagre sum, we guarantee that there’s a reason the horse is cheap. Often, this reason will lead to you spending more in veterinary attention and care. When it comes to buying horses, you get what you pay for. You also have to think about what extra equipment you’ll require, including grooming equipment, halters, tack, rugs, boots, bits, and everything else you’ll need. The easiest and best way to find out for yourself whether you can afford a horse or not is to estimate your costs (use the opposite page as a guide) and save this amount each week. If you can do it comfortably, WITHOUT digging into your savings, then it’s likely that you can afford to care for a horse. Another suggestion as a ‘just in case’ is to create a new bank account for yourself, in which to put away around $20 a week. This small amount of money - (which hopefully you won’t miss all that much) should be locked away in case of a veterinary emergency. If you’re that little more prepared you’ll find yourself much better off should your horse require veterinary attention. >

Make sure that you have the time and energy to look after your dream horse. Make sure that you can provide your new horse with the love and attention that he or she needs. Bonding with your horse is very important - especially if you’ve just bought him or her! The more time you can spend with your horse, the more you’ll get out of your relationship. You need to be able to look after your horse sufficiently - and this means WORK! Grooming, feeding, mucking out, cleaning tack, and washing gear are only some of the tasks. If you don’t have the knowledge to do all this and more, then you’re not ready for a horse of your own. You need to also have a sound knowledge of horse health and how to treat minor horse injuries. You should know what to do in an emergency, and how to efficiently care for your horse. Even if you have an endless money supply - if you don’t know the basics of riding, and detailed horse care - then forget it! It’s important to make sure that your horse has a companion, and that you can spend lots of time with your horse! If you can bond with your horse early, you’ll have a very rewarding relationship.

The total weekly amount for maintaining your horse is only around $72.30. If you ride five times a week, each ride is equal to $14.46! *Also not included - optionals including showing fees, treats, floating hire, extra riding equipment or vet fees. Thoughts On Buying A Horse This option gives you everything you could want - providing you have the time and horse care knowledge to care for your own horse. You have access to your horse whenever you want, you can ride where you want, when you want, and do what you want to do. You can compete regularly, too. You also have the responsibility of caring for your horse when it’s pouring down rain, treating illnesses and being there for your horse every day. Ownership is an ongoing commitment.

LEASING A HORSE Basically, the terms of lease can be very different depending on who you’re leasing from. A ‘free lease’ doesn’t mean that you get everything for free - just the use of the horse. This is the most common type of lease. You still have to pay all the costs involved - everything except the cost of the horse itself. However, you may have set rules, no choice in where you keep your horse, and many other problems. A lease contract is a great way to keep both parties happy when a horse is being leased out. Leasing will pretty much cost the same as if you owned the horse, but without the initial cost of the horse itself. In most cases, you will still require all the equipment listed. Thoughts On Leasing A Horse Leasing is a great option if you’re new to riding, and know a bit about horse care. If you get stuck, you can always ring the owner of the horse for help, and you can learn a LOT this way.. however.. getting to know a horse that someone else owns can turn into a heartbreaking situation. The problem with leasing is that you have no control over the horse, or what happens to it. Many riders get attached, only to find that the horses are wanted back by their owners after a period of time. Some owners with no time for their horses lease their horses out with an option to buy on termination of the lease. This is most often the best way to buy your horse, but it’s a rare opportunity.
As An Alternative Trail rides are a great way to ‘get out there’ and get a taste of horse riding. If you’ve never ridden before, go see what it’s all about on quiet reliable horses. Trail rides are not the place to learn to ride, but you’ll get a feel for what it’s about, and exactly how difficult it can be to start out. Plus, you’ll see some gorgeous country! As far as any sports go, equestrian is amazing in so many ways, and so rewarding! Get out there - on horse back!

THE HORSE’S VIEW
' w e i v s e s the hor
r o h r e d n a v t a m with
What I would tel
I fell in love with horses as a young adult and I found it very difficult to sort th all of the do’s and don’ts of working with horses. Every body had different ideals an and it was quite the journey of trial and error. Empathy was always a deciding fac me, I wanted the horse to feel good about the situation they were in, rather than just an item or machine to meet my needs like a car or motorcycle. I wanted a connectio a living, breathing, feeling soul, which led me to search for guidance in the area o psychology and how they think and learn.
The greatest problem that horses face is that first we learn to ride and then begin to learn about the animal itself. Our goals to determine our outcome with horses and I would suggest to someone starting out in horses to decide what your inten and what you want to achieve with your horse. I personally love reading westerns and many of these stories would often the cowboy’s relationship with their horse and how in tune they were with each other. The author would often describe the knowing from the cowboys emotions whether there was danger and he needed to be prepared to run, or the horse would cowboy to danger, as the horses senses were greater then that of the human’s and could detect a presence long before th would. The cowboy would notice a change in his mount alerting him to something out of the ordinary. So for me horses h been as much about ribbons and trophies as it has about relationship.
The best advice that I could give those who do want to compete at a top level (and I don’t think there is anything w competition!) would be to pay attention to the horse. See, horses are like people and have very different personalities. Not have the want to be an athlete, some are quite happy pottering around while others love the work and mental drive it ta to top level competition. Trying to turn someone into something they are not is exhausting and deflating for both parties. S match you, your goals and your horse, it doesn’t matter how much potential talent is in a horse if their heart isn’t in it.
Setting your goals is important because it means you know what it is you want to achieve in your equestrian endea both you and your horse will succeed because of it. If your ambition is competition, yet you don’t have the skills to train a top level then you are best off purchasing something ready to go. If your goals are to want to be able to train horses the

begin by searching out a trainer that has ideals you value to lead on the path to your future goals. Maybe your lifestyle means you can only ride on weekends - then you aren’t going to want a horse that needs to be trained or worked too often, one that is docile and who can have time off and be saddled and ridden even after weeks off. Now I believe every horse can get to the point where they are okay with the human world and have unlimited time off, but it requires training and if that isn’t for you then it is best you find a suitable horse. Horse psychology is more important then knowing how to ride or how to make a horse do something, because when it is the horses idea to do something, they do it with heart and soul, so learning how to make your idea your horses idea is the key to a successful relationship with your horse; a happy willing horse. Also being able to understand and read the horse in front of you means you will be able to tell if that horse is the right match for your goals. The very best advice I could give to a beginner would be to learn about horses first and riding second. You will be safer and your horse will be happier. The greatest compliment we can give someone is to learn as much as we can about them and to show interest and understanding. Relationships are most successful when we put others feelings and needs ahead of our own, and our horses are no exception. Best wishes,

FUNFEATURE
Trick Training Heaps of fun - have your bag of treats at the ready. Google for some great inspiration, but start with something simple. For very ‘tactile’ horses, teaching your horse to touch objects, or to ‘smile’ (flehmen response) can be great first steps. Reward and repitition is the key!

Pamper Day/ Equine Day Spa
Have an all-out pony pampering day. Think washing, grooming, trimming, plaiting, massage, hoof oiling. Make your horse look like a million bucks - then take the photos to prove it!
FUN ACTIVITIES
Mini Gymkhana
Invite your friends - or your enemies, - just place them last - and hold your own Mini Gymkhana. Choose unmounted classes - think ‘topsy’ or fun ring classes, led classes, and a handy mount style challenge. The best part is that you can tailor your classes to your skill level, and to that of your ‘entrants’. It’s a great excuse to practice your plaiting, put on a BBQ and relax with the ponies. Just find an unbiased judge.. then bribe them. =P
• Apricots • Bananas • Blackberries • Blueberries • Celery
• Cherries • Coconut (Flesh only!) • Corn • Dates • Figs
• Grapes • Mangoes • Oranges • Peaches • Pears
• Pineapple • Plums • Sultanas • Strawberries • Alfalfa Sprouts
NOTE: Please AVOID: Avacado, onions, potato, rhubarb, tomatoes, capsicum, chilli, broccoli, persimmon and cauliflower. Better yet, have a crack at making your own horse treats. We found some online at http://www.aboutyourhorse.com/easy-make-horse-treat-recipes

Fun With Stencils
Silver spray brings this crown design to life!
Quarter Marking Stencils Why not let your horse stand out from the crowd with a quarter-marking stencil? Grosvenor Park Products stocks a range of brush/spray and clipping stencils in fun designs, including the boxing kangaroo which was created for the Australian team to use at the London 2012 Olympics. The brush/spray stencils are made in England from tough, rubberised vinyl and are magnetic allowing for easy storage on the wall of your shed or float. They can be brushed on as a traditional quarter-marking pattern or you can highlight the design using a coloured or glitter spray.

Clipping Stencils
If you are after a longer-lasting effect, this is the perfect time of year to apply a clipping stencil. A clipped design should last until the winter coat is shed but may need touching up over the winter as the coat grows. Clipping stencils used to be a disposable, one-use product that required one person to hold them in place while someone else did the clipping. The new clipping stencils from Grosvenor Park Products have solved both those problems, they are reusable and have a sticky back, meaning they will stay in place while you clip.
How to use a clipping stencil Clipping the design
1) Start with a horse which has a clean and dry coat. The adhesive on the stencil
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
will not stick to water, dirt or grease. For best results, the coat should be 10— 20mm long. If you clip the design earlier in the clipping season, it will be easier to re-trim it as the season progresses. Very long coats can cause overlapping layers and this layering may distort the pattern. 2) The stencil is made from a thick vinyl which has a sticky side and comes on a wax sheet. When you are ready to clip your design, peel this wax sheet away and return the stencil to it after clipping. 3) Position the stencil on the horse, somewhere the finished design can be seen easily from the ground, then smooth into place. 4) Using only a soft brush, carefully raise the coat through the holes in the stencil. Using a set of trimmers shave carefully pressing on the stencil as you go to define the edges.
‘LIKE’ GROSVENOR PARK PRODUCTS ON FACEBOOK FOR SPECIAL OFFERS AND NEW PRODUCT NEWS! 5) Once you are satisfied this has been done thoroughly, remove the stencil by peeling it downwards in the direction of the hair and stick it next to your clipped design to use as a visual guide. 6) Using the trimmers, tidy as necessary and shave off the webs which support the design to finish. The devil is in the detail - care and patience at this stage will be rewarded with a good result. 7) Return the stencil to the waxed backing paper and clean at your earliest convenience, as per the instructions below.
See how easy great results are!
Watch the video at http://youtu.be/C4mdupKVS44
Surely your horse deserves one of these!
Cleaning the stencil 1) Remove the stencil carefully from the waxed backing paper and place face down in a sink. 2) Apply a generous squirt of washing up liquid to the adhesive side of the stencil and work this into it thoroughly to release the hair, grease and dust. 3) Rinse thoroughly with clean water. The hair clippings will block a sink eventually so use a
strainer in the plug hole or rinse over a drain. 4) Using a hair dryer to dry the stencil and warm the glue on the adhesive surface will help revitalise its adhesive properties and prolong its life. 5) Re-apply the wax backing paper immediately to seal the adhesive surface from the air and store flat in a dry place.

‘Getting Along...’
I
don’t often use the term ‘natural’ horsemanship. If you had to categorise what I do, then I suppose most people would put me in there. I prefer to use the term ‘practical’ horsemanship, or just plain old horsemanship. To me, what I do is simply communicating, talking, conversing with the horse in a way that he understands, respects and likes. I used to just say ‘in a way that he understands’, but the more horses I work with, the more I realise that they ‘understand’ most of the training methods out there. And understanding is not necessarily a good deal.
Ask Tanja... 56
For example, I worked with a horse today, an ex – racehorse, and when I met him I thought he was quite sweet (which he is ), and quiet. What I realised after working with him for a little while is that he is tolerant. And more to the point, he has learnt to ‘shut down’ and accept whatever it is that you are going to ‘do to’ him. I have met a few horses like this, and each comes out of their shell in their own time, the horse from today literally rolls his tongue, bites it between his teeth, and sucks on it, like a baby sucks on a dummy. I believe he does as a coping mechanism. He puts his head down, sucks on his tongue, does what you ask, lets you do whatever you are going to do, and waits for you to leave. At first appearance he seems quiet, what he is – detached.
He ‘understands’ that this is the path of least resistance. So understanding isn’t all its cracked up to be. Respect – I want my horse to respect me and my space to keep me safe, to achieve performance. So understanding and respect together – better, but still not the whole package. I can get understanding and respect from a horse, but he still doesn’t ‘like’ what we are doing. Now I’m not naive enough to think that given a choice my horses wouldn’t just choose ‘eat grass’ most of the time, but I do believe we can train, play, work – whatever the words that you use, in a way that he likes. I want my horse to be engaged and like my company while he is in it. By the time I finished working with this big boy, he had started to relax and give me some trust, give me a chance to prove that I was who I was telling him I was, he had stopped sucking on his tongue so much and actually began to engage in the skills we were doing. I think he still might be a ‘quiet’ horse – but I want him to be a confident, engaged quiet horse – not a horse that is just waiting to be somewhere else. At the end of the day, horses just want to ‘get along’, its us that create the issues by trying to communicate with them the way we understand, not the way they do.
