8 | Career Expo Guide 2013 In 1983, Jack Stack and his 12 business partners scraped together $100,000 and borrowed another $9 million to buy a failing division of International Harvester in Springfield, Missouri. With the country in the midst of a recession, the future looked bleak for the engine-rebuilding plant they called SRC (Springfield Remanufacturing Corporation). The company’s debt-toequity ratio was 89-to-1. With hundreds of jobs on the line and morale at an all time low, Stack knew something drastic had to be done to keep the business from folding. The solution was as simple and sensible as they come: turn business into a game. This new approach to running a company was called Open-Book Management and was later coined “The Great Game of Business.” Through using this approach, SRC has become a thriving company of over 1,200 engaged employees in more than 17 business units across a variety of industries. This once struggling company with a stock price of only ten-cents per share in 1983 is worth over $199 a share today. How to Navigate a Job Fair
By Chandra Johnson
You’re in a large room with a zillion tables. A job is on the line. The stakes are high in this economy. Everyone is ready to go, wearing a power suit, carrying portfolios, and looking confident. Are you there? Are you ready? Do you have a plan? There IS a strategy to navigating a job fair, and this article will help you identify effective ways to get the most out of your job fair experience. First, it will discuss what you can do to prepare. Second, it will explain what to do while you are at the job fair, and last, it will describe what to do after the job fair since your search doesn’t end at 5:00.
Before the Job Fair
• Identify your transferable skills. Employers are looking for candidates who know what their skills are and how they can be used effectively in their organization. Think about what you have to contribute to them. Keeping a story or two about your communication skills, effective teamwork, or motivational talents might come in handy. • Write an effective résumé that showcases your skills and contributions. When you highlight your contributions, the employer knows that your efforts had a positive impact to your organization and you will likely do the same for them. • Have someone proofread your résumé before making copies. • Go to the Career Center website to find the list of registered employers for the Career Expo. You should spend time researching the company’s mission statement, structure, future goals, etc. Take some notes on each company to keep in your portfolio that day. Don’t bring out your research in front of the employer, but take breaks to review your notes before speaking to the next employer. Identify talking points and think about how to start the conversation. • Identify organizations you want to visit and prioritize them. To settle your nerves, you may wish to visit first with one or two employers that are on your list, but are not your #1 choice. • Practice your handshake with a friend. You should have a firm, confident handshake, not limp or a bone crusher.
At The Fair
• Utilize your strategy. Figure out where your first employer is located. Review your notes for that company, and have a couple conversation starters ready. • Take initiative and start the conversation with the employer. This demonstrates your confidence to the interviewer. • Remember that you may not get to spend much time with the employer if there are other students waiting, so stay positive if the conversation doesn’t last as long as you might have hoped. You can let them know you would like to talk with them further about how you might be an asset to their organization and offer to leave a copy of your résumé and ask for their business card. • After you meet with an employer, try to find a place where you can take some notes about that employer. This will also give you a chance to review your notes for your next employer so you are still ready to impress.

Kansas City Missouri Police Department kcpd.org In front of the Police Headquarters stands a statue of a police officer holding a small child in his arms. The monument in itself relates a story, but a closer look reveals119 names engraved in the stone - men who gave their lives in upholding the oath they took at the time they became police officers. These men gave everything with the hope that their
sacrifice would make the city a better place to live. If space permitted, each name would make a story well worth telling. The Kansas City Missouri Police Department had its beginning April 15, 1874, when the Board of Police Commissioners, with George Caleb Bingham (famed Missouri artist) as its president, appointed Thomas M. Speers to fill the office from April 15, 1874, to May 4, 1895. No chief since that time has held the office as long as Chief Speers. Chief Clarence M. Kelley, who in 1973 resigned to become the second permanent Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was head of the Kansas City Police Department almost twelve years and was second in the length of time he served the citizens of Kansas City. Both of these men were far advanced in their talents and actions in the field of law enforcement, capable of giving the most to the citizens of Kansas City for the dollars spent and the manpower available. Since the appointment of Chief Speers, Kansas City has been served by 34 men as head of the department. A search into history of the background of each of these men soon reveals that each had an outstanding gift of leadership and responsibility that suited them for the important office they filled. The City Council, heavily swayed by a corrupt Tom Pendergast, approved a home-rule ordinance in 1932 that brought KCPD under city governance for the first time since its 1874 inception. Previously, it was governed by a board of men appointed by the governor. Corruption of the police force ensued.
In 1939, Missouri Attorney General Roy McKeltside came down hard on the corruption generated by the Pendergast Machine. Missouri Governor Lloyd Stark had the police department returned to state control under commissioners that he appointed. Thus was reinstated the original form of KCPD governance – a governor-appointed Board of Police Commissioners, and it’s the system we use today. (An historical note: this new Board in 1939 appointed a new police chief, Lear B. Reed, and charged him with rooting corruption out of the force. About 50 percent of KCPD employees were fired at thattime.

This new equipment allowed us to travel throughout our viewing area to bring taped programming to the Ozarks from our own backyard. We videotaped the dedication of Table Rock Dam in 1959 and soon thereafter produced Harold Bell Wright’s well known and beloved Shepherd of The Hills on location at the Shepherd of The Hills Farm in Branson, MO. We were awarded the TV/Radio Mirror award for most original program in the Midwest for that production. An SNG (satellite news gathering) truck was purchased in 1986 and allows us to broadcast from anywhere in the United States. The SNG works like this: A signal is sent to satellite from the truck; satellite sends the signal to KY3; KY3 sends the signal to our Fordland transmitting tower; from there it goes to our viewers. Total time for signal travel is an amazing 1.5 seconds! Our production truck, Studio 3, was delivered to KYTV in 1989. It is a literal television studio on wheels and is used for remote broadcasts, sporting events and remote production. The truck is frequently hired by major networks, including ESPN, Fox Sports, Sports Channel and Prime Sports. The KYTV transmitting tower erected at Fordland, MO in 1961 was originally 1609 feet tall, missing being the tallest structure on earth by 61 feet. Later construction of a new tower increased its height to 2000 feet. Three St. Louis Gateway Arches stacked on top of each other would still be 110 feet shorter. We have just recently completed the construction of our new transmitting tower at Fordland for Digital Television. This tower is also 2000 feet tall. The original KY3 facilities built in 1953 were added to six times before being razed in September 1997. At that time, KYTV moved into its current building located immediately behind the site of the original building. The new building is 34,000 square feet, contains 45 miles of video, audio, phone and computer wire and was built at

Your Resume is Your Calling Card By Margie Stewart
When you go to a Career Fair, it’s expected that you will bring résumés with you to the event. Your résumé is your calling card to each employer– letting them know that you are interested in them and their opportunities available to you.
Print your résumé on résumé paper – not laser printer paper, but nice quality résumé paper. A stack of résumé paper can be bought at Wal-Mart, Staples, Office Depot or you can buy résumé paper by the sheet at Copy This in Plaster Student Union. Prepare your résumé well in advance to ensure that it reflects a professional image of you to employers. The appearance of your resume should be designed in a way that looks professional and is easy to read using some bold, italic and bullet points to guide the employers’ eyes to see your qualifications and attributes. Generally, employers prefer a one-page résumé, but don’t short sell yourself if you feel a two-page résumé is necessary. Be sure not to ruin your image by spelling something incorrectly or using inappropriate grammar – always proofread your résumé. Your résumé highlights your EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, COMPUTER SKILLS, OTHER RELEVANT SKILLS, STUDENT ACTIVITIES, VOLUNTEER/ COMMUNITY SERVICE, ACADEMIC PROJECTS and other marketable attributes. Employers are looking for candidates who have specific skills to contribute, interest in their organization and job opportuni-
ties as well as someone who will fit into their organization. This requires doing some research of the employers who are attending the Career Fair. You can see a complete list of the employers attending the Career Fair by visiting the Career Center website: http://careercenter. missouristate.edu/COBCareerFair.htm or by logging in to JobTracks. The COB Career Fair is CAREER EVENT #525 - click on “Search Employers.” Most of the employers have posted their internships &/or jobs on JobTracks already so you can see the opportunities they are currently recruiting. Don’t be surprised if some employers tell you to apply for their position(s) online through their company website and/or through JobTracks. They may still review your résumé with you, but will need you to fill out the necessary application material through their website before considering you as an applicant. This is to comply with federal regulations about the way employers keep data on applicants, and to manage applicant data efficiently. If you want to feel most prepared for the COB Career Fair, bring your résumé to Résumé Madness and visit JobTracks to view full-time jobs and internships prior to the career fair. Here are some details: Come to Résumé Madness on September 18 & 19 in Glass Hall &/or Blair Shannon to have someone critique your résumé. If you cannot come to our résumé madness event, come in to the Career Center during our Walk-in Hours: Monday–Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Résumé Madness
Many employers will conduct interviews the following days, weeks and month after the career fair. Visit the Career Center website to see a complete listing at http://careercenter.missouristate.edu/OnCampusInterviews.htm. Apply through JobTracks to show your interest, and attach your résumé. If you are not registered for JobTracks already, come in to the Career Center to sign a consent form. This allows you to upload your résumé and apply for internships & full-time jobs through JobTracks and interview with the employers when they visit campus.

The Care & Feeding of References
By: Jack M. Hunter II Director, The Career Center
If you could place a classified ad for a reference provider, it might read:
Wanted: Reference Provider. Must know my capabilities. Must understand me better than I understand myself. Should be honest (but not too honest). Must be able to write a reference quickly. Must result in an interview or job offer. Non-paid position. No benefits. Call 555-765-4321.
But it isn’t that easy! The truth is that selecting references is a crucial task for someone who is conducting a job search. Do this well and your search will be effective. Do it poorly and your search will surely fail. Reference providers do not wander around with signs declaring, “Will write reference letters for needy graduates.” You must find them, care for them and reward them when they assist you. Your references must be able to provide factual information about your professional skills. They are not your neighbors, family friends, relatives, Boy or Girl Scout leaders, or clergy. They may be a work supervisor, an instructor who had you in class, or a faculty advisor. Before you formally ask a prospective reference to write for you, there are several things you need to do. Provide him or her with: • A copy of your résumé • The job description of the position for which you are seeking a reference • Assurance that if he or she so chooses, the reference may be provided confidentially. In other words, select wisely and trust without reservation. You also need to ask several questions: • Do you know me well enough to be a reference? • Are you able to do this for my by xxx date? • What will you say about me? • Is there other information that you need from me? You should plan to identify five or six references. You will probably select three to four of them for each position for which you apply as you tailor your reference to the position.
An effective reference will be able to give concrete examples of your integrity, verify that you have effective communication skills, and comment on your ability to manage and control the work environment. An effective reference will give specific examples of the results of your work experiences and/or your professional development. Some of your references will be available for several years; most, however, should be replaced in the first three years of your career as a professional. There are specific details involved as you care for your references: • Balance your references by including both males and females of various age and ethnic groups • Ensure that the address and daytime phone number of your reference on your résumé matches that on the written reference letter, and that it is correct.
• Do not select an individual who will not tell you what he or she will say about you, who does not know you, or who cannot complete the reference by the date you need it. • Keep your references informed of your successes and failures – via e-mail, phone, or in person. • When you land your job, send each of your references a hand-written thank-you note. You are in control of the process of locating references who will write the letters you need. Be thorough as you find your references, care for them with attention to detail, and reward them with profuse thanks when you secure your position. In other words, pay proper attention to your references, and they will take care of you.

Pyramid Foods pyramidfoods.net In 1919, after his time in the Army, John Ramey bought a small grocery store in Springfield, Missouri. When this small neighborhood grocery store proved to be successful, he expanded his grocery business to eight small stores. In 1939, Ramey established the area’s first modern supermarket in an empty field outside of town. Due to the economy during World War II, Ramey consolidated his eight smaller stores into this one supermarket. In 1946, Ramey sold the supermarket to two Kansas City men. These men built a second Ramey supermarket in 1954, a third in 1957 and a fourth in 1965, all located in Springfield. In January 1967, all four stores were sold to the Cohen family through Roswil Inc., a Maryland-based company. Under the management of Richard Taylor, the small chain grew quickly beyond southwest Missouri through acquisition and consolidation in rural markets. In 1993, Richard Taylor transitioned the management of Ramey to his son, Erick. The company continued to expand and many Ramey stores began to take the name Price Cutter, primarily those in the Springfield, Missouri area.
In 1999, the company became affiliated with the Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr. Pepper and title sponsor of this local stop of the national PGA tournament. The tournament is held each summer at Springfield’s Highland Springs Country Club. As of 2012, the company has helped to raise more than $8.7 million for children’s charities in the Ozarks and helped make possible the construction of 5 Habitat for Humanity homes.
In April 2002, the company acquired seven Albertson’s stores in southwest Missouri, operating under the banners of Price Cutter, Price Cutter Plus and Smitty’s. Inside these stores customers find full-service Starbucks kiosks, large international aisles and an extensive variety of natural and organic foods and products.
In 2004, RPCS, Inc. (Ramey, Price Cutter, Smitty’s) was established as the company’s parent name, because the company was previously operating under more than two banners.
On January 1, 2005, an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) became effective and acquired 100% of the stock of the company as of December 2004. The ESOP gives each employee a share in the ownership of the company. As owners, all employees share in both risks of capital ownership and the success and growth of the company.
In July 2007, RPCS, Inc. acquired nine Albertson’s stores in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area, adding another brand to the company: Food Pyramid. Food Pyramid has a new and innovative focus: to provide families with helpful nutrition information.
In August 2010, RPCS, Inc. opened a small, urban market in Downtown Springfield, Missouri. The first of its kind in Southwest Missouri , the Bistro Market not only offers fresh produce, meat and groceries, but also a fullservice bar and restaurant. In October 2011, RPCS, Inc. acquired Escott’s in Cushing, Oklahoma. In November 2012, RPCS, Inc. acquired seven Summer Fresh stores in Southwest Missouri, two Cash Saver Cost Plus Outlets in Carl Junction, Missouri and Baxter Springs, Kansas and one Save-A-Lot store in Springfield, Missouri. Today, RPCS, Inc. operates 56 retail grocery stores: • 28 stores in Missouri under the Ramey, Price Cutter, and Smitty’s banners • 9 Food Pyramid stores in Tulsa, Bartlesville, Ponca City and Stillwater, Oklahoma • 2 Save-A-Lot stores in Springfield, Missouri and Siloam Springs, Arkansas • Ponca City Discount Foods in Ponca City, Oklahoma • 4 Country Mart stores in the Branson, Missouri area • Bistro Market in Downtown Springfield, Missouri • Escott’s in Cushing, Oklahoma • 7 Summer Fresh stores in Lamar, Mount Vernon, El Dorado Springs, Fair Grove, Marshfield, Greenfield and Conway, Missouri • 3 Cash Saver Cost Plus Outlets in Ozark and Carl Junction, Missouri and Baxter Springs, Kansas The company offers many unique services to its customers. The Standard take advantage of new opportunities arising from the changing nature of the salmon industry. Utilizing skills and techniques developed in the Alaska ground-fish fisheries, Signature brings a new approach to salmon processing. We feature frozen at sea quality in our products, with a stable long-term supply through our unique relationship with the Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association. Our approach to fisheries is to produce value from supplies of abundant stocks while avoiding unacceptable waste of natural resources. We focus on developing markets for under-utilized, under-valued species, by delivering higher quality products and new product forms. The “Lucky Buck” is a 180-foot floating processing plant. Each summer, the Lucky Buck is moored in Neets Bay, Alaska (about 30 miles north of Ketchikan). Salmon is harvested at a consistent level over a three- month period. Fishing takes place within a few miles of the Lucky Buck, and the salmon are chilled then processed within a few hours. Great care is taken to handle each fish in a manner that provides the customer with the highest quality product. The M/V Ocean Fresh is a 225-foot processing vessel, which can operate in Bristol Bay, Sitka, Juneau and Chignik, Alaska. The Ocean Fresh will be anchored off shore and will remain stationary while processing salmon. Both operations will do primarily the same work, just in different locations. Our primary product is currently frozen chum and pink salmon. Our products are marketed in North America, Asia and Europe. We are always looking for additional processing opportunities, with custom processing our specialty. We look forward to bringing new standards of quality to other segments of the seafood industry. The region grew with communities rising up to feed the needs of those early travelers migrating west. Initially the population remained centered near the area known now as the City of St. Louis. By the mid 1800’s the City, with its dense population had moved to separate themselves from the County. At the close of WW II, the population began shifting and by 1960 both the City and County were each nearing a population of 725,000. In response to this growth the citizens of St. Louis County voted to create, develop and maintain a professional police agency. In 1955, the Saint Louis County Police Department was established to serve and protect the rights of all citizens within our borders.

the-standard.org For our clients, the benefit of our service is the ability to save them time and money. We take the burden out of finding dependable carriers to transport goods, monitoring the trucks until delivery and handling any obstacles that may occur while the goods are in transit. In turn, our clients are able to concentrate on their core business. It All Started with Trust... and Vegetables Ken Oaks spent 11 years as a buying and selling agent for Castellini Company, a large Cincinnati-based produce company. During his tenure with the company, Oaks found only one freight broker he could trust and reach at all times. Frustrated with the lack of dependability in the trucking industry, Oaks teamed up with this colleague to start a third-party logistics firm. Oaks believed that if he was having difficulty finding and trusting reputable freight intermediaries, others in the industry probably were, too. After much discussion between the partners, the entrepreneurial venture of Total Quality Logistics began in 1997. Blood, Sweat, and Sleepless Nights The partners took a big risk in starting the company. They exhausted their personal assets, taking out second mortgages and using their family savings accounts to form a company in an industry known for little or no communication and poor customer service. They set up shop in a small 300-square-foot office on the east side of Cincinnati. Beginning that day, the Total Quality Logistics operating credo was to “”pledge integrity,”“ committing to the highest ethical standards. Today, this pledge continues to be our greatest competitive advantage. In the first year, the founding partners worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They slept in the office and rotated overnight and weekend shifts, using a mobile phone in order to truly deliver on our company’s promise of nonstop, quality customer service. Continuing a Tradition of Integrity Since the beginning, the partners made it a practice to be available at crucial times when other brokerage firms were nowhere to be found. They would call potential clients in the evenings and on major holidays, when it was likely they were experiencing problems, to step in and address the issues immediately. The risk and hard work paid off. That first year, Total Quality Logistics posted revenue of $1 million and has continued with significant growth ever since. In 2006, Oaks purchased his partner’s shares of Total Quality Logistics and became the sole owner. That same year, we posted revenues of almost $300 million. In 2007, we celebrated our 10th anniversary and moved into a new 100,000-square-foot corporate headquarters, generating over $400 million in revenues. Looking Ahead Total Quality Logistics is a growth company within a growth industry. The opportunities for TQL are virtually unlimited, and we have developed an aggressive plan for capitalizing on those opportunities during the next three years. A major step in that direction begins with hiring committed and dependable professionals who will help grow our business, while keeping our reputation and integrity intact. Wonderland Camp wonderlandcamp.org Wonderland Camp is a residential camp for children and adults with mental & physical disabilities located at the Lake of the Ozarks. Mission Statement The mission of Wonderland Camp is to provide a fun, educational camp experience for children, teenagers, and adults who are physically and mentally challenged, to offer a respite from daily care giving for family members and healthcare workers and to provide and nurture a personal development experience for volunteers and staff. How one man’s dream became a labor of love for many Charles J. Miller had a dream. It all started the summer of 1969 during a conversation with the Executive Director of the Woodhaven Learning Center, a school for mentally and physically challenged children in Columbia, Missouri. His dream was of a residential summer camp on property he and his brother-in-law, Harry Brown, owned, located on the Lake of the Ozarks. A camp where the physically and mentally challenged could experience the exhilaration of outdoor living and play. A camp designed to match their special needs and provide them with the maximum safety with freedom to enjoy nature. Meetings and discussions with concerned groups including the Missouri State Division of Mental Health, United Cerebral Palsy of Missouri, Missouri Association of Retarded Children and Woodhaven Learning Center led to a meeting with the Missouri Jaycee Executive Committee. Mr. Miller told the Jaycees of his dream, and on May 17, 1970, the Missouri Jaycees voted to adopt the camp project. Mr. Miller and Mr. Brown donated their land; 35 undeveloped acres adjoining the Lake of the Ozarks with an additional 100 acres for nature trails and outcamping. They named it Wonderland Camp and it was incorporated as a not-for-profit foundation by the State of Missouri. Jaycee chapters throughout the state came forward to contribute. The Kansas City Jaycees provided the professional architectural and planning services. The Southern Platte Chapter took on half the cost and labor involved in installation of a well and pump. And Jaycee Chapters throughout the state gave liberally of their labor to build the facilities.
Although only a few buildings were completed, the camp was functionally sound and usable enough to welcome its first campers in the spring of 1972. By the August closing date 157 children and 83 counselors and staff had used and thoroughly enjoyed the new Wonderland Camp. Since the first small start, construction has gone forward. Facilities have been expanded to provide an outdoor camping experience for approximately 1,000 campers in 2001. The camp is still growing.
