MARCOS RALLIES VOTERS: FIGHT ‘RETURN TO DARKNESS’

LAMENTS HOW OTHER SLATE’S LEADER THINKS KILLING THE ONLY SOLUTION

PRESIDENT Ferdinand

“Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Saturday rallied support for his Senate slate, urging Filipinos to reject what he described as an attempt by some to “return to darkness” and instead choose leaders who will bring progress, compassion and unity.

Speaking at the “Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas” campaign rally in Davao del Norte, Mr. Marcos framed the upcoming elections as a pivotal moment for the country’s future.

He also indirectly responded to former President Rodrigo Duterte’s remarks suggesting that incumbent senators should be killed to make way for PDP senatorial bets.

“We see the other party... they seem unnerved, maybe even afraid because when they see the Alyansa lineup, they start saying all sorts of things,” he said.

“We just heard the other day that they said there’s no hope—maybe because they have no hope (of winning) themselves – so they would rather eliminate 15 senators. Then again, it’s troubling that some people think the only solution to all problems is to kill more Filipinos. It’s puzzling why they think that way.”

“This election is crucial. You must choose whether we move forward or return to a time of fear and uncertainty,” President Marcos added.

During last Thursday’s PDP proclamation rally, Duterte said: “Patayin natin ‘yung mga senador ngayon para mabakante. Kung makapatay tayo ng mga kinse na senador, pasok na tayong lahat. (Let’s kill the senators now to have vacant seats. If we can eliminate 15 senators, we can all get in.) Talking of opportunities, the only way to do it to blow them all up.”

Earlier this week, Mr. Marcos kicked off his senatorial bets’ campaign by assuring voters that his candidates “do not have blood on their hands” from the previous administration’s bloody war on drugs.

“Look at the record of our candidates. None of them have blood on their hands because of Tokhang (drug war). None of them were involved in pocketing sacks of money, exploiting the pandemic crisis, or abandoning our people to sickness and death,” the President said.

Mr. Marcos added that none of his candidates are pro-China nor have they coddled criminals involved in

‘destabilizing actions in the South China Sea.’

illegal POGO activities.

“We are at a crossroads as a free nation. Do we want to return to a time when our leaders wanted us to become a province of China? Do we want to go back to the days when our country was turned into a gambling den for foreigners?” he said.

“There is no one among our candidates who applauds China and is pleased when we are bombarded with water, when our Coast Guard is hit, when our fishermen are blocked, their catch stolen, and our islands seized,” Mr. Marcos added.

At the House, Assistant Majority Leader and Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Jil Bongalon on Saturday urged Filipinos to stand firm against “proChina candidates” in the May 12 elections and rally behind Team Pilipinas, which he said is the senatorial ticket of the Marcos administration.

“This is no ordinary election. It is a fight for the future of our country, We can either elect leaders who will defend our sovereignty and push for real reforms, or we let pro-China

politicians regain power and sell our nation’s interests once again,” Bongalon said. He said the Alyansa Team Pilipinas is committed to defending Philippine sovereignty, lowering the cost of living, and ensuring real economic progress.

In contrast, he said Team China, referring to the Duterte-aligned candidates, has a long track record of appeasing Beijing, ignoring the plight of Filipino fishermen, and weakening national institutions.

“These pro-China politicians let Beijing trample on our rights in the West Philippine Sea. They made excuses for Chinese aggression and questioned our own legal victory in The Hague. Why should we allow them back into power?” Bongalon said.

“They talk about patriotism, but their actions show otherwise. They welcomed China’s interference, they pushed for lopsided projects, and they even threatened our institutions when it suited them,” he added.

PH, US VOW TO ADDRESS CHINA’S ‘DESTABILIZING’ ACTS

ADDRESSING Beijing’s “destabilizing actions” in the South China Sea and increasing economic cooperation topped the agenda of the meeting between Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo and United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Germany on Friday.

During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference (MSC), Rubio reaffirmed the US commitment to its alliance with the Philippines, expressing eagerness to build “an even more invested and enduring relationship.”

“Had the opportunity to meet with Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Secretary Manalo dur-

ing the Munich Security Conference. We discussed how we can strengthen the US-Philippine Alliance to address China’s destabilizing actions in the South China Sea and increase the economic prosperity of our citizens,” Rubio said in a statement on X.

Manalo, meanwhile, said Manila is committed to working with the US “to further strengthen economic and security ties.”

“A great first in-person meeting with Secretary Rubio at (MSC 2025). A strong and committed Philippine-US partnership in various areas will contribute to a more robust alliance,” Manalo posted on the same platform.

The US State Department said the two officials also discussed economic cooperation on infrastruc-

ture, critical minerals, information technology, and energy, including civil nuclear cooperation.

Manalo previously said Manila hopes to clarify what assistance in the Philippines would be affected by the US foreign aid freeze but did not indicate if he raised the matter during his talk with Rubio. The Office of Civil Defense already ordered an inventory of all related initiatives and projects that might be affected by the US foreign aid freeze. The order came after US President Donald Trump temporarily suspended all the country’s foreign assistance programs for 90 days pending reviews to determine whether they align with his administration’s policy goals.

QC LGU DECLARES DENGUE OUTBREAK AS CASES SURGE

THE local government of Quezon

City on Saturday declared a dengue outbreak, citing a continuing surge in cases in the city.

“Our declaration of a dengue outbreak ensures that we are on top of the situation, and we are doing everything we can to protect our residents from this deadly disease, especially our children,” Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

From January 1 to February 14, the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division (CESD) of the city’s health department recorded 1,769 dengue cases, nearly 200 percent higher than last year’s 609 cases. A total of 58 percent of the reported cases involved schoolaged children (5 to 17 years old), while 44 percent are children ages 1 to 10.

Meanwhile, 10 Quezon City residents, including eight minors, passed away from the disease.

“Children comprise most of the victims of this deadly disease. This is why I call on my fellow parents to cooperate with us in protecting our children against dengue. Let us be alert on how our children are feeling and lead clean-up drives in our communities,” Belmonte said in Filipino.

All 66 Quezon City health centers will be open during the weekends from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accommodate all possible dengue patients, especially as a primary solution to address late diagnosis. The city’s health centers and hospitals also provided free dengue test kits and established fever express lanes as a swift response to the dengue symptom.

fering from any kind of disability, physical or mental, that prevents them from constituting themselves into an impeachment court,” Generillo’s petition read.

In the mandamus petition, Generillo also interpreted “forthwith” by citing the Oxford definition of “immediately” and “without delay.” It also cited the need to resolve the Constitutional issue while noting the weight of the proceedings.

“There are constitutional issues in the petition which deserve the attention of

this Court in view of their seriousness, novelty and weight as precedents.”

“The Constitution does not allow the Senate to procrastinate during the period it is on recess whether it shall constitute itself into an impeachment court and try the Vice President,” the petition added. As this developed, a member of the House prosecution panel appealed to

the Senate to start working on the impeachment trial, noting that delaying the proceedings would only serve to deny justice.

“The sooner we start the impeachment trial, the better. The Senate has been criticized already. We should have started the impeachment now,” Iloilo Rep. Lorenz Defensor said.

‘REPORT ILLEGAL POGO ACTIVITIES’

THE Presidential AntiOrganized Crime Commission (PAOCC) is calling on the public to report any suspicious activities linked to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) as authorities intensify their crackdown on criminal syndicates operating under the guise of online gaming.

In a news forum in Quezon City, PAOCC Executive Director Gilbert Cruz revealed that POGOs continue to have a deep involvement in organized crime, including human trafficking, cyber fraud, and violent attacks following a recent raid in Metro Manila.

“Last year alone, 66 murders were recorded in

Region III related to POGO activities,” Cruz said. “Many of these cases remain unsolved, often involving foreign nationals.”

Authorities have also uncovered evidence of extreme violence within these syndicates.

During a raid in Pasay City, operatives rescued 34 Indonesian nationals allegedly held captive by a Chinese-led criminal group. A separate operation revealed torture videos on a suspect’s phone, showing victims being subjected to electric shocks and other brutal treatment.

The rescued Indonesians were reportedly set to be trafficked to Cambodia, where syndicates see law enforcement as more lenient.

The crackdown has also exposed POGO-linked financial influence, with authorities seizing luxury vehicles, high-end condominiums, and illegal firearms.

Authorities also seized 12 torture videos from arrested Chinese nationals, showing brutal treatment of victims, including one man bound and threatened with a gun.

Cruz said these groups use their vast wealth to manipulate legal loopholes and resist prosecution. “They have the best weapons, the best cars, and they buy entire buildings just to continue

their operations,” Cruz said.

During the same operation, authorities also recovered a uniform of China’s People’s Liberation Army.

The PAOCC is tracking over 100 illegal POGO operations that defy the government ban.

Following Executive Order No. 74, all POGO operations—whether previously licensed or rebranded under new names—are now illegal. Cruz confirmed that law enforcement agencies have begun dismantling these operations and arresting those responsible.

The PAOCC also said it is hoping to weed out all illegal POGOs by the end of the year.

Cruz said only more than a hundred POGOs are operating in the country after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s total ban on POGOs, which took effect in January. From big POGO hubs, Cruz said, most of these operators are now doing business from apartments, condominiums, including from their rooms in hotels or resorts.

Cruz said they have yet to identify all the victims in the video and urged families who have missing kin and suspect that they are working for an illegal POGO to contact the PAOCC to see if one of them is among those being tortured in the videos.

ROMUALDEZ COMMENDS CUSTOMS ON CAMPAIGN VS. SMUGGLING

SPEAKER Martin G. Romualdez

commended the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for its intensified campaign against smuggling, citing the agency’s seizure of ₱85.1 billion worth of contraband and the successful conduct of over 2,100 anti-smuggling operations in 2024.

While Romualdez recognized these significant achievements, Romualdez reiterated the urgent need to step up enforcement efforts against agricultural smuggling, which remains a serious threat to local farmers and food security.

“Customs is doing well in the fight against smuggling, but we must not stop. The campaign needs

to be intensified, especially against agricultural smuggling that destroys the livelihood of our farmers and makes the people poor,” he said.

The Speaker pointed to alarming reports of massive rice shipments left uncollected at ports and stockpiling of frozen chicken imports, fueling suspicions of deliberate supply manipulation.

He stressed that these immoral and illegal schemes hurt farmers and consumers, distorting prices and putting the nation’s food security at risk.

Romualdez called for stricter border controls, stronger interagency coordination, and faster prosecution of smugglers to dismantle these illegal operations. He

noted that smuggling is not just an economic problem but a direct attack on farmers, consumers and the country’s stability.

While acknowledging the BOC’s gains in intercepting illegal shipments, Romualdez urged authorities to address systemic weaknesses that allow smuggled goods to enter the country. Among others, he pushed for advanced monitoring technology, stricter tracking of agricultural imports, and swift action against enablers of smuggling, whether in the private or public sector.

Beyond enforcement, Romualdez stressed the need for government safeguards against price manipulation, ensuring fair market conditions

for farmers and consumers alike. He reaffirmed the House of Representatives’ commitment to supporting legislative measures that would strengthen Customs’ enforcement capabilities and stabilize food prices.

“The fight against smuggling is not just about seizing smuggled goods. This is about protecting the livelihood of our farmers and the welfare of every Filipino. The government needs to show that we are serious about suppressing the exploiters.”

Romualdez expressed confidence that sustained vigilance and decisive action will help curb agricultural smuggling, ensure Filipino farmers thrive and protect consumers from unfair trade practices.

BINAY BATS FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY AS A SOLUTION TO MINDANAO POWER WOES

SENATORIAL candidate and Makati

City Mayor Abigail Binay stated on Saturday that renewable energy offers a solution to the increasing demand for power in Mindanao.

“I believe there is a significant opportunity for renewable energy—this is one of my main advocacies,” Mayor Binay expressed during a press conference in Davao del Norte.

Binay noted that, currently, renewable energy sources such as solar, hydroelectric, and biomass constitute only a small percentage of Mindanao’s total power capacity. She mentioned that solar and biomass energy account for merely 2 percent of the capacity mix, highlighting that there is untapped potential for these resources in the region.

“And those are untapped opportunities that Mindanao can leverage to meet its power demands,” Binay added.

Furthermore, Binay highlighted the role of renewable energy, particularly

solar power, in addressing the ongoing electricity issues in remote schools. “We should focus on completing the last-mile infrastructure in schools, and Mindanao should be among the regions where this is achieved,” she stated.

“I’ve noticed that many newly built schools are equipped with solar panels. This means they can generate their own power and won’t need to rely on the grid,” she explained.

Previously, Binay mentioned that developing new and cleaner energy sources could attract more investors to Mindanao, particularly in the food and agriculture sectors. Last year, the business community in Mindanao raised concerns that without new energy sources, the region could face a power crisis by 2027 or 2028.

In response, Binay proposed the tax-free importation of solar panels and related solar technology and hardware. She also suggested providing incentives for households and businesses that switch to solar energy.

LACSON SUPPORTS ADMIN ON DIGITAL GOVERNMENT

SENATORIAL candidate

Panfilo Lacson is endorsing the administration’s initiative to digitalize government transactions.

He believes this effort will reduce graft and corruption while enhancing the efficiency of public services. Lacson reiterated his advocacy for allocating unused appropriations, which average P350 billion a year from 2016 to 2023, to local government units. This funding could support projects and programs devised by their local development councils. Lacson highlighted that Panay Island, currently one of the five topperforming regions in agriculture, has the potential to become the leading region if it receives adequate funding from the national budget.

This is especially possible now that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed Executive Order 82, which strengthens regional and local development councils.

COMELEC SAYS 30 MILLION BALLOTS ALREADY PRINTED

THE Commission on Elections

(Comelec) said it has made significant progress in printing ballots for the May 2025 elections, with nearly 30 million ballots printed as of Saturday.

This represents 41% of the total 72 million ballots that need to be printed, according to Comelec chair George Garcia. However, only around 5.5 million to 6 million ballots have been verified so far, highlighting the need to accelerate the verification process. Garcia explained that ballots, like money, are prone to printing errors such as incorrect cuts, colors, or smudges. To ensure accuracy, each ballot undergoes a two-level verification process: manual inspection by over 1,000 personnel at the National Printing Office, followed by machine verification. Ballots that fail either level are rejected.

Garcia noted that the rejection rate is around 7 to 8%, which he considers low. However, every rejected ballot needs to be reprinted and undergo the same verification process. He emphasized the importance of sending the exact number of ballots to each precinct to avoid any suspicion of missing ballots.

Despite the challenges, Garcia assured that all ballots will be printed by March 19 and verified by April 14, well ahead of the May 12 Election Day.

ONLINE SYSTEM FOR TRAVEL CLEARANCES

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will soon launch an online system that will streamline the process of application and issuance of travel clearance for minors traveling abroad (MTA).

Social Welfare Officer  (SWO) IV Cheryl Mainar of the DSWD’s Program Management Bureau (PMB) told reporters that applicants no longer need to submit the required documents physically to any agency office nationwide.

Mainar emphasized that applicants “can apply at the comfort of your home.”

“The previous one was manual processing, meaning you have to go to DSWD offices to apply for a travel clearance. Now, they don’t have to go to the offices.  Just at home as long as they have an internet connection.”

A travel clearance is a document issued by the DSWD to minors or individuals below 18 years old traveling outside the Philippines who are unaccompanied by any of the parents or persons having parental responsibility or legal custody over the child.

The processing time for applications with complete verified and authentic documents will be 1-3 days in the new MTA system, according to the PMB.

Mainar said those  required to seek for a travel clearance would be  any Filipino minor using a Philippine Passport who is traveling alone outside the Philippines; traveling with prospective adoptive parent/s for intercountry adoption; and traveling with a person other than his/her parent/s, legal guardian, or person exercising

parental authority/legal custody over him/her needs to seek for a clearance from DSWD.

A Filipino minor who is illegitimate and is traveling with his/her biological father; and a minor below 13 years old but will be accompanied by a sibling or a relative within the 4th degree of consanguinity or affinity who is over 15 years old and whose purpose for travel is to permanently join the parent/s abroad also needs to secure a travel clearance, Mainar said.

The PMB social welfare officer also discussed cases in which a minor will be exempted from securing a travel clearance.

The operationalization of the MTA system is anchored on President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr’s socio-economic agenda on the digitalization of government processes and operations.

Complete information on the application process and documentary requirements can be found in the DSWD Memorandum Circular 22, series of 2024 ( https://www.dswd.gov.ph/issuances/MCs/MC_2024-022.pdf).

ACIDRE VOWS TINGOG COMMITMENT TO MEANINGFUL REPRESENTATION

IN RESPONSE to recent calls to uphold the true spirit of the PartyList Law and address concerns about the alleged manipulation of the party-list system, Rep. Jude Acidre of Tingog Partylist reaffirmed the organization’s unwavering commitment to genuine public service and meaningful representation.

“At Tingog Partylist, our focus has always been on delivering real service to the people. Our track record speaks for itself—we’ve passed more than 40 legislative

measures into law just this term, addressing key issues that matter to Filipinos. We’ve also been consistently recognized as a topperforming party-list in Congress.

On the ground, our Tingog Centers nationwide provide direct assistance to those who need it most. More than just words, we get things done not only for our constituents but for the Filipino people,” Acidre stated.

Tingog Party-list, Acidre said, has consistently worked to bridge the gap between policymaking and grassroots action, embodying the principles of representation

and service.

While Tingog recognizes the importance of safeguarding the integrity of the party-list system, Acidre emphasized the organization’s efforts are focused on delivering tangible results that benefit the public.

“We believe that actions speak louder than accusations. Our work in Congress and in communities nationwide proves our dedication to the people we serve,” he added.

Tingog Party-list’s legislative accomplishments include measures that address healthcare, education, livelihood, and disaster

resilience, among others. Meanwhile, its grassroots programs provide immediate relief and long-term support to Filipinos in need, demonstrating its commitment to making a real difference in people’s lives.

As discussions about the future of the party-list system continue, Acidre said Tingog Party-list remains committed to being a proactive force for good governance and inclusive development. Rep. Acidre concluded, “We will continue to focus on what truly matters—serving the people with integrity, compassion, and action.”

PAGCOR WILL PROVIDE FINANCING FOR KEY PHILIPPINE MILITARY ACADEMY FACILITIES

THE Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) will finance the construction and upgrade of key facilities of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

PAGCOR chair and chief executive officer Alejandro Tengco announced the pledge on Saturday during the PMA Alumni Homecoming in Baguio City.

Although not yet finalized, PAGCOR said the pledge would cover the construction of a new Candidate Control Liaison Office, a new modern warfare laboratory, and more facilities for the PMA Sports Complex, among others.

The Candidate Control Liaison Office at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Medical Center compound in Quezon City is where successful PMA applicants undergo a complete physical exam before entering the academy in Baguio.

“We were informed that this office is now in a serious state of deterioration and is in dire need of renovation,” Tengco said. “So today, we are affirming our commitment to help fund the construction of the new PMA Candidate Control Liaison Office even if the PMA management has not yet formally requested it.”

Tengco also pledged to finance the construction of a martial arts studio and

an Olympic-size heated swimming pool as essential enhancements to the PMA Sports Complex.

“These projects are proof of our commitment to protect the welfare of the brave men and women of the PMA and the Armed Forces who risk their lives for our nation. With grateful hearts, we will ensure that your sacrifices are never taken for granted and that you can always count on our cooperation and support,” he said.

PMA Superintendent Vice Admiral Caesar Bernard Valencia extended his gratitude to PAGCOR.

“We are ecstatic that PMA will be continuing its collaboration with PAGCOR,” he said. “Next year, we will be working on a new curriculum and we will delve mainly into electronic warfare, cyber warfare and artificial intelligence. For us to do that, we need a bigger venue where cadets can test theories they learn in class.”

Some of PAGCOR’s previous contributions to the PMA were the P105-million grant in 2012 for the rehabilitation of the Sports Complex and the P600 million donation from PAGCOR licensees Solaire Resort & Casino and Newport World Resorts for the construction and improvement of cadet barracks between 2016 and 2019.

OFW HOSPITAL EXPANDS

SERVICES TO INCLUDE CANCER

THE Overseas Filipino Workers Hospital (OFWH), which provides medical assistance and services to more than 86,000 OFWs and their dependents in 2024, has increased its services this year by opening facilities and treatment for dread diseases like cancer and chronic kidney ailment.

Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte said, “This OFW Hospital of our DMW (Department of Migrant Workers) that served more than 86,000 of our OFWs and their families in 2024 alone has certainly upped its game this year in putting up facilities for treating our migrant workers and their qualified family members with cancer or kidney disease.”

Villafuerte, a lead author of a House-approved bill enabling this facility to hire foreign or local specialists or medical experts to treat its patients, added: “Our senators can help our OFW Hospital take its game to the next level by passing before the end of the 19th Congress a counterpart bill to HB (House Bill No.) 8325 enabling the DOH (Department of Health) to sign up medical specialists to treat OFWs and their families at the OFWH.” HB 8325, which the House passed on third and final reading in May 2023 yet, tasks the DOH to tap cardiologists, pulmonologists, nephrologists, and other medical specialists to hold clinics and treat migrant Filipinos and their families at this specialty hospital based in the City of San Fernando in Pampanga. Moreover, this bill authorizes the OFWH to invite foreign experts in fields not readily available in the country to hold clinics and treat patients in the facility, and to send its personnel to research or medical institutes for advance healthcare training and to attend international or local conferences and seminars, subject to the DMW’s approval.

4 DEAD, 2 INJURED IN EARLY MORNING FIRE IN PASAY

FOUR people died, and two others were injured in a fire of still unknown origin that broke out early Saturday morning in a densely populated barangay in Pasay City. In an interview with radio station DZBB, Senior Fire Officer 1 Resmond Germino, the chief public information officer of the Pasay City Fire Station, reported that the bodies of four individuals — a mother, a 7-year-old boy, a teenager, and a 40-year-old man — were retrieved. Germino stated that one of those injured suffered a firstdegree burn, while the other sustained a foot injury.

The fire broke out at 4:35 a.m. in a row of houses on Esteban Street near the creek in Barangay 177 in Malibay, where most houses were built with light materials. Firefighters and private volunteers from southern Metro Manila managed to control the fire around 7 a.m. and extinguished it after more than an hour. Arson investigators are currently looking into the cause of the blaze and assessing the damage. Joel E. Zurbano

LOS ANGELES FIRE ZONES HIT BY MUDSLIDES AFTER HEAVY RAIN

LOS ANGELES — Mudslides blocked roads around Los Angeles on Friday (Saturday, Manila time) after heavy rain pounded areas burned by last month’s wildfires, sending denuded hillsides tumbling.

Parts of Los Angeles got as much as 7 centimeters of rain in a day, leaving areas flooded and burn scars in Pacific Palisades and Altadena strewn with fire debris and rubble.

The Pacific Coast Highway — a once picturesque road where multi-million dollar properties were razed by January’s blazes — was shuttered, with thick mud blocking the way.

The torrent of water also washed a Los Angeles Fire Department vehicle into the ocean, where it remained Friday, with authorities say-

ing they hoped to pull it out of the surf later in the day.

The fire department official who had been driving the SUV at the time escaped with minor injuries, a spokesman said.

In the Hollywood Hills, home to a mixture of movie stars and working-class people, a large mudslide left around 8 inches of debris all over a main road.

And in Altadena, where thousands of buildings were destroyed by the fierce fires last

month, a number of vehicles were stranded in debris that washed onto the streets.

The damage came despite extensive preparations by local authorities who had placed sandbags and concrete barriers in places thought to be at risk from the strongest storm of California’s winter.

While the area badly needed the rain — until February there had been no significant precipitation for eight months — it was always going to be a problem in places affected by the deadly fires.

Hillsides where anchoring vegetation has burned away are not able to absorb water quickly.

The heat of the fires also has the effect of baking and hardening the soil, meaning rain just washes off. AFP

PROTESTS IN NY AS ‘TRANSGENDER,’ ‘QUEER’ SCRUBBED FROM RIGHTS WEBSITE

NEW YORK — The National Park Service has scrubbed references to transgender and queer people from the website of a monument to the 1969 Stonewall riots, a foundational moment in the struggle for LGBTQ rights, igniting protests in New York City.

The move comes as President Donald Trump has sought a return to a strict binary definition of gender in the United States, leading attacks on transgender people and issuing an executive order that states the country only has two genders —

male and female.

The website — managed by the National Park Service, a branch of the federal government — had provided information about the monument, which includes a visitor center as well as the famed Stonewall Inn.

The small Greenwich Village gay bar was raided by police on June 28, 1969, igniting six days of rioting that birthed the modern gay rights movement, later extended to transgender and non-binary people, who do not identify as male or female.

But on Friday the widelyused “LGBTQ” acronym — which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer — had been changed throughout the website to “LGB” and all reference to transgender or queer people erased.

Several hundred people carried signs bearing slogans such as “Silence = death” and “there’s no Stonewall without the T” as they rallied in New York City against the move.

“This is just cruel and petty,” posted New York Governor Kathy Hochul on social media.

“Transgender people play a critical role in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights — and New York will never allow their contributions to be erased,” she wrote.

Trump has demonized any recognition of gender diversity, attacking transgender people — notably transgender women in sports — and gender-affirming care for children — in both his rhetoric and in executive orders. AFP

TAIWAN MILITARY TRAINING JET CRASHES, PILOT RESCUED

TAIPEI — A Taiwanese-made military training jet crashed on Saturday due to “dual engine failure,” with the pilot safely ejecting from the aircraft, the island’s air force said.

The Brave Eagle went down after taking off from Chih Hang Air Base in southern Taitung county at 8:40 a.m. (0040 GMT), the air force said in a statement.

The pilot, identified as Major Lin, was rescued and taken to the hospital where he was in “good health” with no injuries, it said.

The air force said the jet suffered “dual engine failure” but a special task force would investigate “to clarify the cause and ensure training safety.” Taiwan has a homegrown defense industry and has been upgrading its equipment, but it still relies heavily on US arms sales to bolster its security capabilities against a potential Chinese attack.

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has threatened to use force to bring it under its control.

The Brave Eagle was made by Taiwan’s Aerospace Industrial Development Corp and had its first test flight in 2020.

The pilot of the aircraft that crashed Saturday had 183 flying hours, the air force said.

In September, Taiwan temporarily grounded its fleet of Mirage 2000 fighters for safety checks, after a jet crashed into the sea. AFP

HUNDREDS MOURN HONG KONG CHAMPION OF PRISONERS’ RIGHTS

HONG KONG — Hundreds filed into a Hong Kong church on Saturday to pay respects to the city’s bestknown advocate for prisoners’ rights who galvanized the public to support jailed demonstrators.

Shiu Ka-chun, a social worker who represented his profession in Hong Kong’s legislature, died last month aged 55 after earlier revealing he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Watched by dozens of plainclothes police, people queued to enter the Methodist International Church on Saturday morning to pay their last respects, followed by a closed-door memorial service.

“(Shiu) has a unique place in history... When I think of prisoners’ rights, I think of him,” said political scientist Ivan Choy outside the church.

A social worker and university lecturer, Shiu rose to prominence during Hong Kong’s 2014 Umbrella Movement — a civil disobedience campaign to push for genuine elections — and was later jailed for it.

During the 163 days he spent behind bars, Shiu clashed with guards over prisoners’ welfare and he championed the cause after his release. AFP

ISRAELI HOSTAGES, PALESTINIAN PRISONERS SET FOR RELEASE

KHAN YUNIS, Palestinian Territories — Gaza militants are due to release three Israeli hostages on Saturday in exchange for 369 Palestinians in Israeli custody, the sixth swap of a truce that came close to collapse this week.

BEIRUT -- Lebanese President Joseph Aoun vowed on Saturday to punish the perpetrators of an attack on a United Nations peacekeeping convoy a day earlier that wounded the force’s outgoing deputy commander.

Aoun “condemned the attack... and emphasized that the attackers will receive their punishment,” a statement from the presidency said on X.

“Security forces will not be lenient with any party that tries to upset stability and civil peace,” it added.

Hezbollah supporters blocked the road to the country’s only international airport for two consecutive nights over a decision barring two Iranian planes from landing in Beirut, with the army reporting unruly protests in the area Friday.

The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) demanded an investigation after one

of its vehicles was set on fire during the Friday night incident, wounding outgoing deputy force commander Chok Bahadur Dhakal as he was returning home.

The Lebanese army pledged to take firm action against those behind the attack, and the interior minister has called an emergency meeting of the Central Internal Security Council on Saturday morning.

The presidency’s statement said Aoun had checked on the deputy commander’s condition after the incident, which he said “cannot be allowed to be repeated.”

The statement said he had “followed up on developments regarding roadblocks, setting fires and riots, and issued directives to the army and security forces to put a stop to these practices”, adding that the judiciary “has begun investigations on the ground.” AFP

Israel and Hamas have traded accusations of violating the January 19 ceasefire, with the Palestinian group saying it would pause releases and Israel threatening the resumption of war in the Gaza Strip.

But on Friday both sides signaled that the hostage release scheduled for Saturday would go ahead.

On Saturday morning, dozens of Hamas fighters lined up in the main southern city of Khan Yunis around a stage bearing the logo of the group’s armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades.

Sources from Hamas and Islamic Jihad said the groups had deployed about 200 militants for the handover ceremony.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has named the hostages due for release as Israeli-American Sagui Dekel-Chen, Israeli-Russian Sasha Trupanov, and Israeli-Argentinian Yair Horn. They have been held by Gaza militants since Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that sparked the war. AFP

OTHEL V. CAMPOS,

A COUPLE’S PASSION FOR PET HEALTH

VLOGGER couple Ericka and Mhar Jhun Santos embody the story of millions of entrepreneurs who have effectively capitalized on social media, not just for self-expression and entertainment but also for business.

From a simple TikTok hobby, they have found success—not just as vloggers but as entrepreneurs—turning Doozzie into a full-scale pet food enterprise committed to providing healthier options for pets.

“We joined TikTok Shop in March 2023, noticing both small and big brands thriving on the platform. The mix of brands already on TikTok Shop sparked our curiosity. It felt like the right time to test if it could work for us, so we decided to take the leap and see if the platform could help us grow,” both said.

Leveraging social media

Before the pandemic, Ericka and Mar Jun were already active on TikTok, posting videos individually and as a couple. Their content revolved around their pets, sharing daily moments and experiences with fellow pet lovers.

As they explored different pet food options for their dogs, they realized that many of the products they promoted or received as gifts were not as healthy as they seemed.

“We noticed that some pet foods we were feeding our dogs weren’t really good for them. That realization pushed us to create our own pet food brand, Doozzie,” Ericka recalled.

Business owners

Driven by a growing concern for pet health, Mhar Jhun and Ericka decided to take the initiative and create their own pet food. Starting small, they began experimenting with recipes in their spare time, crafting food that would be both nutritious and irresistible to pets.

Both left their jobs to dedicate themselves fully to the business. Mhar Jhun, previously

an architect, and Ericka, who had worked at a call center, shifted their focus entirely to Doozzie.

As they gained traction with their content, they saw an opportunity to introduce their homemade pet food to their growing audience. The positive reception encouraged them to expand their operations.

Before long, Doozzie transformed from a small project into a full-fledged business. Starting from scratch, however, presented many challenges. They faced financial obstacles, particularly in purchasing costly machinery and sourcing high-quality ingredients.

“We wanted something more safe and effective than what’s currently on the market. Developing a new product isn’t easy, especially with limited resources, but we took the risk with what we had. There were some trial and errors encountered, but we eventually came out with the product we wanted. At first, we

SCHNEIDER Electric, a global leader in energy management and automation, has been named the World’s Most Sustainable Corporation for 2025 by Corporate Knights.

It is the first company to top the Global 100 ranking twice, having also earned the distinction in 2021.

“This second title from Corporate Knights, along with other key ESG recognitions, affirms our long-term positive impact,” said Schneider Electric CEO Olivier Blum. Schneider Electric secured the top spot due to its strong sustainability initiatives, including gender diversity in leadership, innovative energy solutions, and linking executive pay to sustainability targets. It also excelled in decoupling energy consumption from business growth and investing significantly in sustainable R&D. In the Philippines, Schneider Electric mirrors its global commitment through impactful initiatives.

It was named the most GenderInclusive Workplace by the 2024 UN Asia-Pacific Women’s Empowerment Principles Awards and continues to drive energy efficiency with its

were worried that no one was buying our product, but slowly, as more fur-parents tried, tested and trusted Doozzie, we garnered more sales,” Mhar Jhun said.

Rather than taking shortcuts, they reinvested their earnings back into the business. Every time they made a profit, they upgraded their machines and improved their production process.

To ensure the quality and safety of their products, they sought guidance from food technicians and food engineers. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) provided them with assistance in obtaining nutritional facts, but beyond that, they built their enterprise using their own resources.

Key to success

TikTok played a crucial role in the success of Doozzie. By consistently uploading daily content, the couple built a strong following. Their vlogs showcased how their pets reacted to their food, highlighting the quality and health benefits.

“People saw how healthy and happy our pets were, and they became curious about

FULLERTON Health, a leading healthcare platform in Asia, is urging Filipinos to rethink their approach to health and wellness.

During a recent health forum, held on January 30, 2025 at the Grand Westside Hotel in Parañaque, the company emphasized the need for a shift from curative to preventive and holistic healthcare, underscoring the importance of regular health screenings alongside a healthy lifestyle.

Fullerton Health’s Executive Health Screening and Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Center country manager Carmie P. De Leon stressed that a proactive approach to healthcare—one that includes routine screenings—can help detect potential health issues before they become serious.

“The need to take a more active hand in staying healthy can only happen if we understand the importance of taking preventive steps,” she said, adding that achieving universal healthcare is possible only if all elements of the healthcare ecosystem work together cohesively.

De Leon emphasized that screenings should be efficient, technology-driven, and convenient—eliminating long wait times and unnecessary hospital visits.

Fullerton Health PH, for instance, offers executive health screenings that take no more than three hours, providing a seamless and personalized experience from check-in to completion.

The company also integrates artificial intelligence to enable predictive diagnoses, helping individuals make informed health decisions.

what we were feeding them. That’s how TikTok helped us grow our brand,” Ericka said.

With over 1.3 million followers on TikTok and Facebook combined, their brand visibility skyrocketed, leading to increased sales and business expansion.

Today, Doozzie offers a variety of pet food products including dry food, wet food, treats and organic supplements. Unlike many brands that rebrand existing products, the couple takes pride in manufacturing their own.

Extra mile for pets

Since launching commercially in March 2023, Doozzie has seen rapid growth. Their products are now being exported to countries like the United Arab Emirates, Italy and Canada, where fellow Filipinos started reselling them.

“Every month, we think of new products because not all items are bestsellers forever. We constantly innovate to keep our brand fresh,” Ericka said, adding that posting a lot of product videos live-selling helps increase sales. The couple is now focused on expanding their manufacturing capacity, developing new product lines and strengthening their online presence. They also plan to continue their TikTok vlogs, as their engaging content remains a powerful marketing tool.

As first-time business owners, Mhar Jhun and Ericka faced the uncertainties of entrepreneurship with a mix of excitement and anxiety.

“Don’t be afraid to try. Many big brands exist, but that shouldn’t stop you from pursuing your ideas. Take risks, be patient, and most importantly, enjoy what you do. If you love what you’re doing, success will follow,” Mhar Jhun said.

MERCEDES-BENZ LEADS LUXURY EV CHARGE WITH EXPANSIVE EQ PORTFOLIO

A MISSED OPPORTUNITY OR A BULLET DODGED?

THE much-anticipated merger talks between Japanese automotive giants Nissan and Honda have officially stalled, with Nissan reportedly balking at becoming a subsidiary of its larger rival. This $60 billion deal, which could have created the world’s fourthlargest automaker, leaves a significant question mark hanging over the future of both companies, particularly Nissan.

MERCEDES-BENZ is solidifying its position as a leader in the luxury electric vehicle (EV) market with the industry’s most diverse EV portfolio. Inchcape Philippines, the official distributor, is bringing the brand’s EQ series to the Philippines, offering a range of models that combine sustainable mobility with Mercedes-Benz’s hallmark luxury and performance.

Following a successful 2024 with 2,389,000 global sales, MercedesBenz is pushing the boundaries of automotive innovation with its EQ lineup. From compact SUVs like the EQA and EQB to flagship sedans and SUVs such as the EQE, EQE SUV, EQS, and EQS SUV, the brand caters to a variety of needs and preferences. The EQ series embodies Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to sustainable luxury, offering zero-emission driving, advanced technologies like the MBUX Hyperscreen and autonomous

driving features, and the timeless design the brand is known for. Each model reflects a dedication to both environmental responsibility and driving experience.

Inchcape Philippines is playing a key role in driving the adoption of EVs in the country. “The EQ series is more than just a lineup of electric vehicles—it’s a statement of our commitment to a greener future without compromising the luxury and performance that define the Mercedes-Benz experience,” said Maricar Parco, General Manager of Mercedes-Benz Philippines.

HONDA HR-V RS E:HEV TO PREVIEW AT METRO MANILA MALLS

HONDA Cars Philippines, Inc.

(HCPI) is giving the public an exclusive preview of its newest hybrid offering, the New Honda HR-V RS e:HEV, before its official launch. From February 14 to March 16, 2025, the HR-V will be showcased at select Metro Manila malls as part of Honda’s Hybrid Mall Tour.

The HR-V RS e:HEV represents Honda’s latest entry into the hybrid vehicle market, joining the CR-V and Civic RS e:HEV. The e:HEV system combines electric motor propulsion with a gasoline

engine, aiming to deliver both performance and improved fuel economy. This preview period allows the public to assess the vehicle’s design and features.

The mall tour schedule is as follows:

• Ayala Malls Manila Bay: February 14-16, 2025

• SM Fairview: February 20-26, 2025

• SM Megamall: February 27March 5, 2025

• SM North EDSA: March 7-9, 2025

• Festival Mall: March 14-16, 2025

While reservations are being accepted until March 8, 2025, the mall displays serve primarily as a public preview and are not focused on direct sales. HCPI has not yet announced specific pricing or launch details for the New HR-V RS e:HEV.

The proposed merger, which also initially included Mitsubishi, was touted as a necessary step for Japanese automakers to compete in an increasingly challenging global market. The rise of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers has taken a significant bite out of their market share, forcing legacy automakers to consolidate and streamline operations. Developing costly new technologies like electric vehicles and autonomous driving systems requires substantial investment, making economies of scale crucial. For Nissan, however, the collapse of these talks may be particularly damaging. The company has been struggling to recover from the turmoil surrounding the arrest and ousting of its former chairman, Carlos Ghosn, in 2018. Ghosn himself predicted a grim future for Nissan, suggesting that any merger would likely result in cost-cutting measures that would disproportionately affect the smaller partner. His prediction appears to have been prophetic, as Nissan’s reluctance to become a subordinate entity within a Honda-dominated structure ultimately derailed the deal. Nissan’s position is precarious. The company has already embarked on a restructuring plan, including significant job cuts and a reduction in global capacity. The failure of the merger talks raises serious concerns about Nissan’s ability to navigate the rapidly evolving automotive landscape. The company now faces the daunting task of charting its own course forward, a path fraught with challenges.

Industry observers are now keenly focused on the potential ramifications of this failed merger for local Nissan operations. The impact on jobs, production, and the overall market presence of Nissan in various regions remains to be seen. The question is whether Nissan can overcome its current challenges and regain its footing in a market dominated by increasingly aggressive competition. The collapse of the Honda merger leaves Nissan at a crossroads, its future uncertain.

THE HEARTBEAT OF COMPASSION:

DONATING USED PACEMAKERS TO DOGS

YES, used pacemakers can be donated to dogs.

The practice of donating used pacemakers to dogs has emerged as a compassionate solution forcanines suffering from heart conditions. This innovative approach not only provides life-saving treatment for dogs, potentially extending their lifespans and improving their quality of life, but also addresses the ethical considerations surrounding the use of medical devices.

The repurposing of pacemakers, once deemed obsolete for human use, allows for a more sustainable approach to medical technology while offering hope to dogs facing cardiac challenges. This practice highlights the interconnectedness of human and animal health, demonstrating the potential for collaboration and innovation in the field of medicine.

Understanding the Need for Pacemakers in Dogs

Dogs, much like humans, can experience various heart issues that necessitate the use of pacemakers. These conditions can range from congenital heart defects to age-related ailments. Pacemakers are devices designed to regulate heart rhythms, ensuring that the heart beats at a consistent and healthy pace. When a dog’s heart fails to maintain a proper rhythm, a pacemaker can be a critical intervention.

Common Heart Conditions in Dogs

Several heart conditions in dogs may require the implantation of a pacemaker, including:

1. Atrioventricular Block: A condition where the electrical signals between the heart's chambers are disrupted.

2. Sick Sinus Syndrome: A disorder affecting the heart's natural pacemaker, leading to irregular heartbeats.

3. Dilated Cardiomyopathy: A disease that affects the heart muscle, leading to decreased heart function.

The Rise of Pacemaker Donations

The trend of donating pacemakers to dogs has gained momentum in recent years. As medical technology advances, older models of pacemakers become obsolete for human use but can still be effective for canine patients. Organizations such as the Tshwane Society for Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals (SPCA) in South Africa have been instrumental in facilitating these donations, providing a lifeline to dogs in need of cardiac support.

How the Donation Process Works

The process of donating a pacemaker typically involves the following steps:

1. Removal: After a human patient has passed away, the pacemaker is surgically removed by a qualified medical professional.

2. Assessment: The device is then assessed for functionality and safety to ensure it can be used in a canine patient.

3. Implantation: Once cleared, the pacemaker is implanted in a dog by a veterinarian trained in this specialized procedure.

This process not only helps dogs but also allows families to leave a legacy of life through their loved ones' medical devices.

Ethical Considerations

The practice of using human pacemakers in dogs raises several ethical questions. Critics argue that it may be inappropriate to repurpose a device designed for humans for use in animals. However, proponents highlight the positive outcomes for dogs that receive these devices, often leading to improved quality of life and extended lifespans.

Success Stories

Numerous success stories have emerged from the use of donated pacemakers in dogs. For instance, many dogs that have received these

devices have gone on to lead active, fulfilling lives, showcasing the potential benefits of this practice. The ethical debate continues, but the tangible results often speak for themselves.

The Science Behind Pacemaker Compatibility

The compatibility of human pacemakers for canine use is based on the fundamental similarities in how these devices function. Pacemakers are designed to regulate heart rhythms, a necessity that transcends species. However, there are important considerations regarding size and anatomical differences between humans and dogs.

Key Differences

1. Size: Human pacemakers may need to be adjusted or modified to fit a dog's anatomy.

2. Programming: The settings on the pacemaker may require recalibration to suit the specific needs of a canine patient.

Veterinarians play a crucial role in ensuring that the pacemaker is appropriately adapted for use in dogs, taking into account their unique physiological requirements.

The Future of Pacemaker Donations

As awareness of this practice grows, the future of pacemaker donations for dogs appears promising. Organizations dedicated to this cause are expand-

ing their outreach and capabilities, ensuring that more dogs have access to life-saving treatments. The ongoing collaboration between veterinary professionals and medical device manufacturers is essential for the continued success of this initiative.

Increasing Awareness

Efforts to raise awareness about the benefits of donating pacemakers to dogs are crucial. Educational campaigns can help inform the public about how they can contribute to this cause, whether through direct donations or by spreading the word.

Fact Check: Clarifying Misconceptions

Despite the growing interest in this practice, misconceptions persist. Some sources have claimed that the donation of pacemakers to dogs is widespread and that numerous organizations are involved. In reality, while the practice is gaining traction, it remains relatively niche, with only a handful of organizations actively facilitating these donations.

Reliable Information Sources

To navigate the complexities of this topic, it is essential to rely on reputable sources. For instance, the article "Dogs Can Use Donated Pacemakers from Humans: Fact Check" by USA Today provides a clear overview of the current state of this practice, debunking myths and presenting factual information. Similarly, the AARP article "Donate a Pacemaker to a Dog?" outlines the benefits and processes involved in this compassionate initiative.

Final Thoughts

The donation of pacemakers to dogs represents a fascinating intersection of veterinary medicine and human compassion. This practice not only addresses the urgent needs of dogs with heart conditions but also raises important ethical questions about the use of medical technology. As the movement continues to evolve, it is vital to approach it with a balanced perspective, considering both the potential benefits and the ethical implications. In conclusion, the journey of a pacemaker from a human to a dog is a testament to the enduring bond between humans and their canine companions. By embracing this innovative practice, society can ensure that more dogs receive the care they need to live longer, healthier lives.

IS RAW FOOD DIET ADVISABLE FOR CATS?

FOR thousands of years, cats have roamed diverse terrains and climates, from the savannahs of Africa and the plains of India to the forests of Eurasia and the Americas. According to the article "Natural Feeding for Cats," from the New Plymouth District Vet Group website, their evolution as obligate carnivores shaped their dietary needs and behaviors. Unlike dogs, which have adapted to a more omnivorous diet, cats have always required a diet primarily composed of fresh, whole prey animals. This includes rodents, birds, reptiles, and insects for smaller cats, and larger prey such as buffalo and deer for big cats.

Whole Prey Diet

Cats traditionally consumed their prey in its entirety, which includes the muscle meat, organs, bones, and even the gut contents. This method of eating provided them with a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients. Consuming the whole animal ensured that cats ingested all necessary proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. The reference article mentioned above says this whole-prey diet naturally met the high protein requirements of cats, which are essential for their health due to their inability to synthesize certain amino acids, like taurine, during times of protein restriction.

The Problem with Modern Commercial

Diets

Today, the abundance of processed cat food— both canned and dry—

presents a stark contrast to their natural diet. Many commercial cat food rely on rendered proteins of poor quality, often from non-meat sources. This affects the digestibility and nutritional value of the food, leading to various health issues. For instance, the protein levels in most commercial diets are insufficient, especially for aging cats, resulting in muscle mass loss. Moreover, these diets often contain high carbohydrate levels, which cats have not evolved to digest effectively. This can lead to overeating and related health problems according to the New Plymouth District Vet Group.

Hydration and Health Concerns

Cats have also evolved to obtain most of their water from the fresh prey they consume. The New Plymouth District Vet Group claims that the lower moisture content in dry kibble diets can place additional stress on their kidneys and digestive system, potentially leading to chronic dehydration and related health issues.

Raw Food Diet: A Return to Natural Feeding

Mimicking a wild-type diet within the home is possible through careful preparation of raw food. The New Plymouth District Vet Group says this approach requires knowledge and consultation with a veterinarian familiar with raw feeding to ensure the diet is balanced and suited to the individual cat. The goal is to replicate

the nutritional benefits of a whole prey diet by providing a variety of raw meats and avoiding preservatives and poor-quality ingredients.

Basic Rules for Raw Feeding

A successful raw food diet for cats involves offering a variety of raw meats to provide a full spectrum of amino acids and nutrients. Initially, ground meats with bone content can ease the transition to raw feeding. Over time, whole meaty bones can be introduced to help maintain dental health and engage cats' natural chewing behaviors. It is crucial to avoid meats with preservatives, which can trigger allergic reactions, and to incorporate small amounts of pureed vegetables to replicate the gut contents of prey animals, according to the New Plymouth District Vet Group.

The Role of Bones and Organ Meats

Feeding raw meaty bones, such as chicken wings and necks, is vital for a balanced raw diet. These bones provide essential minerals and help maintain dental health. The New Plymouth District Vet Group tells us that it is important to ensure that bones are raw and appropriately sized to prevent choking or dental fractures. Organ meats, such as liver, heart, and kidney, should also be included regularly, as they are rich in essential vitamins and taurine.

Nutritional Balance and Supplementation

A well-balanced raw diet typically does not require additional vitamin or mineral supplements. However, some situations may necessitate supplementation under veterinary supervision to prevent imbalances.

Transitioning to a raw diet can take time, and older cats or those with specific health issues may need special considerations, such as lightly cooking the food or starting with poached meats.

Addressing Potential Health Concerns

Feeding a balanced raw diet reduces the risk of

Andre Tan Hock Lai has been in the food business for over 40 years and developed 65 concepts worldwide.

In an interview, Hock Lai explained how he saw World Kitchens as an opportunity to create something new for the Philippine dining scene.

“I think it's all about the passion for food. Mr. [George] Araneta called me up and said, ‘We want you to come here and look at our space.’ To see whether I can create a concept and this Aranata City is known for always being the first. So I said, ‘Okay, I will come. I will create one of a kind and first of its kind’,” he recalled.

What makes World Kitchens truly unique is its ownership model. Unlike other international food halls owned by a single entity, this one is operated by 15 world-class chefs, each running their own show kitchens independently.

“That means every restaurant is independently operated by a chef,” he told Manila Standard Cravings.

The former Flordeliza child star was introduced as the new face of the beauty and wellness brand during a media conference on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Rhed, known for her powerful performances as a child star, expressed her gratitude for the opportunities coming her way once again.

“It feels great because I didn’t expect any of this, and I’m just really grateful to have had this opportunity,” Rhed shared during an interview with the press.

Currently balancing her senior high school studies with her showbiz projects, Rhed admitted that it’s no easy feat.

“I’m not gonna lie. I’ve been having a bit of a hard time lately. But with the love of my friends and family and their support, I’m managing to get by,” she said.

Now a graduating STEM student, Rhed has her sights set on a future in filmmaking.

“I also want to continue my career this way, but you know, I’m the one behind the camera,” she added, sharing that her dream is to become a director someday and hopes to make meaningful films in the future.

When asked if she ever feels overwhelmed by juggling her studies and work, she responded, “Not really, because I love doing this, so I don’t get tired.”

BREAKING THE MOLD:

GEN Z CHANGES THE WORKPLACE NARRATIVE

AS THE new generation of graduates joins the workforce, the number of Gen Z employees in the workplace has dramatically increased. However, this could also lead to misunderstandings, either in the office or in the field, due to apparent differences in work ethics or approaches to problem-solving.

Some may unfortunately be typecast with stereotypes or false impressions simply because of their young age.

Let’s hear from the latest batch of Summa Cum Laudes from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde on how they can debunk these common misinterpretations as they enter the professional arena.

Nicole Hannah E. Lee – Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management

“Lazy and unmotivated” – a misconception often branded on Gen Z. This generation steps into various spheres of innovation, creativity, and technology, driven by a mentality to make a mark in diverse fields. We are constantly searching for opportunities to reach greater heights in this competitive industry. If you ask me, I’m wholeheartedly dedicated to pursuing my passion for offering genuine hospitality to the world. Why not take the chance and see what we’re truly capable of?

Aaliyah Gabrielle L. Pangan – Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management

As a hospitality graduate now thriving in Dubai’s real estate industry, I’ve encountered a common misconception about Gen Z: that we’re overly reliant on technology and lack interpersonal skills. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Growing up in a digital-first world hasn’t diminished our ability to connect face-to-face or build genuine relationships. Gen Z isn’t just techsavvy; we’re adaptable, resourceful, and driven by purpose. We leverage technology as a tool to innovate while valuing teamwork, integrity, and hard work. My journey proves that we’re ready to exceed expectations, bringing fresh perspectives and a commitment to excellence in any field.

Jerzy Claire Q. Kwong – Multimedia Arts

The misconception that Gen Zs lack work ethic or commitment shifted when I entered the corporate world as a Junior 3D Designer. I proved that we’re adaptable, hardworking, and eager to learn. Balancing creativity with deadlines and embracing feedback showed my dedication to quality work and collaboration. My experience debunks the idea that Gen Zs are unmotivated— we bring innovation, passion, and a strong drive to contribute meaningfully to any workplace.

Chelzea C. Tobias – Multimedia Arts

A common preconceived notion about Gen Z is that we want things to come quicker and easier, painting us as mentally and emotionally weaker than previous generations. I believe this is merely a misinterpretation of our sensitivity and ingenuity. Gen Z offers new perspectives

and approaches. Our mindset is different—not to conflict with tradition, but to challenge it and invoke innovation, both in the workplace and society at large.

Louis Andrei N. Barrer – International Hospitality Management

As someone working in the hospitality industry, one of the common misconceptions about Gen Z is that we predominantly target office jobs and avoid service roles. In reality, we genuinely enjoy exploring different departments and facets of our field. We’re not just looking for stability in a single role. While it’s important to have a specialty, we’re also open to learning and seizing new opportunities that help us grow and advance in our careers.

Marionne Christelle A. Ang – International Hospitality Management

Gen Zs are often seen as lacking loyalty, frequently switching companies without longterm commitment. Coming from a FilipinoChinese community, I understand why this concern is common, especially within the Chinoy business community, where loyalty and trust are deeply valued. To challenge this perception, I will demonstrate my dedication by consistently contributing and growing within the company. By valuing mentorship and learning opportunities, I can show that Gen Z employees aren’t disloyal—

they simply seek environments where their efforts are genuinely valued.

John Ervin E. Dela Peña – Business Intelligence and Analytics

Gen Z’s career hopping is often misunderstood as impatience or a desire for greener pastures, but it’s really

about valuing our growth and seeking environments that foster both professional and personal development. When asked about staying long-term in a company, I personally look for a place where I can continue to grow, create an impact, and share the same values. Thankfully, I am

LONG before the swanky retail districts, everyone flocked to Cubao for shopping and entertainment. It had movie theaters, department stores, restaurants, a coliseum that, at one point, was the largest indoor arena in Asia, and a popular massive Christmas display that halted vehicle flow for hours.

Ibis Styles Hotel is set to reignite Cubao’s vibrant energy. The French budget hotel, under the Accor international group, is known for its unique, design-driven approach to hospitality. Each property aims to capture the culture and heritage of its location with unique details that foster a sense of oneness with the locals.

Ibis Styles in Araneta highlights memorable moments at the Araneta Coliseum. The hotel features a couch shaped like a boxing glove and a blackand-white “Thrilla in Manila” mural, a tribute to the iconic Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier boxing match in 1975. Those old enough to remember the event can’t help but stop in amazement.

LUXURY STAYS AND ROMANTIC GETAWAYS

CREATIVE COMFORT AT IBIS STYLES

The hotel’s front desk is located on the third floor. Instead of the usual tall counters, guests queue in front of stacked road tour cases. These massive black containers, typically used to protect musical instruments, sound equipment, and other sensitive gadgets, represent the numerous local and international entertainment events held at the big dome. Beyond nostalgia, the Ibis brand places a strong emphasis on creative spaces. It invites guests to linger and explore new ideas while taking advantage of Instagram-worthy spots. The co-working space, located opposite the front desk, features a library and a coffee counter for those who need to stay in work mode while on vacation.

Even the rooms exude playfulness, with every detail reflecting the entertainment features of the destination. Guests are welcomed by carnival-themed carpets, brightly colored rooms, and walls adorned with musical-themed metal installations.

The vibrant experience has attracted travelers of all age groups. “The hotel’s proximity to major

entertainment venues, shopping centers, and public transport hubs makes it a convenient choice,” explains Christiana Mongaya, Novotel Marketing Communications Manager.

Apart from its attractions, eco-conscious travelers appreciate the hotel’s commitment to sustainability. Instead of providing bottled water in plastic containers, each room has a reusable glass bottle, and water dispensers are available on every floor.

Guests can look forward to a restful evening with the famous “Sweet Bed,” an innovation introduced by the Accor brand that elevates the sleep experience.

The first bed designed by a hotel group, the Sweet Bed at Ibis Styles has three components for unparalleled comfort: a base that adapts to the body’s movement, a hypoallergenic mattress that conforms to the body’s pressure points, and a thick topper for extra softness.

At Ibis, guests can expect a playful and unpredictable stay. Be sure to check out the rooftop pool, 24-hour gym, and dining options like strEATs, Le Bistro, and The Edge Skyview Bar, which offers a stunning view of Manila’s skyline.
