AN UNIDENTIFIED number of Filipinos are up for deportation as the Trump administration starts its massive campaign against illegal aliens in the United States.
In an interview on Saturday, Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Romualdez said “a number of Filipinos” – newly arrived ones in the US – have already been informed that they are set for deportation.
He said they would be among the first deportees under the sec-
ond Trump administration, which has promised to mount massive arrests and deportation of illegal immigrants. He said there is no information about the number, the current status, or the date of deportation but most of them are from California, New York, and New Jersey.
“I don’t know what status it is right now, but I keep on saying the same thing – if there is no legal path, my suggestion is voluntary departure,” he said.
“If they have a legal path, then they should find an immigration lawyer or somebody that can help them file a case because they have rights for their case to be heard,” Romualdez added, addressing those who went to the US on a work visa that expired.
The US Department of Homeland Security this week announced a nationwide ad campaign warning illegal aliens to
leave the US now or face deportation with the inability to return.
Earlier, Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo Jose De Vega said the government could tap the department’s Assistance to Nationals fund, as well as the Department of Migrant Workers’ Aksyon Fund, which is used for legal, medical, financial, and other forms of assistance for overseas Filipino workers.
In November, the DMW said it would assist over 300,000 undocumented Filipinos in the US who are at risk of being deported.

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the Philippines will always choose the path of peace as he led the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Manila at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Taguig on Saturday.
“Filipinos paid the highest price for democracy to be preserved and for democracy to flourish. Standing on this hallowed ground, we are reminded of our solemn duty to always do what is necessary to ensure that we bequeath a sovereign and proud country to future generations,” Mr. Marcos said.
“The Philippines, deeply familiar with the atrocities brought about by war between and among nations, has always chosen the path of peace, and I can assure all of you that we will continue to do so... Through diplomacy, dialogue and cooperation, we have successfully maintained a region that is peaceful, stable, and prosperous,” he added.
The event saw the participation of representatives from the United States government, Filipino dignitaries, and World War II veterans to honor those who passed away in one of Philippine history’s deadliest battles.
The Battle of Manila in February 1945 marked the end of Japanese occupation in the country but at the cost of thousands of Filipino lives.
It also left the capital in ruins with historic landmarks including churches, schools, and government buildings destroyed — leaving entire com-
munities displaced.
“May the light of their sacrifice, their nationalism, their love of country forever scatter the shadows of war, tyranny, and oppression,” Mr. Marcos said.
The President said he is gratified by the Philippines’ “enduring alliance, partnership, and friendship” with the US as they share the same goal of achieving peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
“In peace and war, through natural disasters and pandemics, Philippine-US relations are firmly anchored on the values and principles that we cherish – peace, democracy, fairness, social progress and justice,” the President said.
“Whether we gather, as we do today, to remember the liberation of Manila some 80 ago, or during joint military exercises as our armed forces will in a few weeks’ time for Balikatan, there is no doubt that our relationship is robust, with our two countries continuing to work together to address common challenges.”
The Manila American Cemetery, the largest of its kind, is a solemn tribute to those who fought and died in WWII, serving as the final resting place of over 17,000 American service members and commemorates nearly 36,300 individuals missing in action.
Among those honored are Medal of Honor recipients, and Filipino scouts and families who served in battle.

THE Philippines has been removed from the Financial Action Task Force
“grey list” of countries under increased monitoring for money laundering and terrorism financing, a status that can hamper global financial transactions.
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, who chairs the National Anti-Money Laundering Coordinating Committee, said the country’s removal from the list is
expected to ease financial flows, reduce compliance barriers, and enhance transparency.
“For so long, our investment attractiveness has been dragged down by this dirty money haven label. This hardfought administration win in its battle against money laundering will be preserved and protected through consistent compliance with global standards,” Bersamin said.
The FATF, an international watchdog monitoring financial crimes, placed the Philippines on its grey list in
2021 due to deficiencies in anti-money laundering and counterterrorism financing measures.
Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas governor and Anti-Money Laundering Council chairman Eli Remolona Jr. credited the removal to strong cooperation between government agencies and the private sector.
AMLC singled out President Ferdinand Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s 2023 signing of an executive order targeting money laundering and “counter-terrorism financing” as having played a key role in
the decision. Mr. Marcos last year also banned offshore gaming operators, known locally as POGOs, that were said to be used as fronts by organized crime groups for human trafficking, money laundering, online fraud, kidnappings, and even murder.
“This seal of good financial housekeeping benefits overseas Filipinos as it would make cross-border transactions faster and cheaper as layers of compliance barriers are removed,” Bersamin said.
VATICAN City — Pope Francis
“rested well” during his eighth night in hospital, where the 88-year-old is being treated for double pneumonia, the Vatican said Saturday. Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 with bronchitis, but it turned into pneumonia in both lungs, causing widespread alarm.
The pontiff’s doctors had told a press conference on Friday there was no imminent risk to his life but that he was “not out of danger.”
The Vatican’s early morning update Saturday was shorter than usual, without mentioning that he had eaten, saying simply: “Pope Francis rested well.”
The Gemelli’s Professor Sergio Alfieri told reporters Friday that the pontiff’s condition has been slightly improving, allowing doctors to incrementally lower the amount of medication he is taking.
“The question is, is the pope out of danger? No, the pope is not out of danger,” Alfieri said. “If you then ask whether he is in danger of dying at this moment, the answer is still no,” he added.
His hospitalization has cast doubt over Francis’s ability to continue as head of the world’s almost 1.4 billion Catholics. AFP
‘SUNSHINE’ STARRING MARIS RACAL WINS AT 75TH BERLINALE
By Angelica Villanueva
ACTRESS Maris Racal reached a new milestone in her career as the Filipino film “Sunshine,” in which she plays the lead role, won the Crystal Bear for Best Film at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale).
Berlinale recognized outstanding films that explore themes relevant to younger audiences, including “Sunshine.”
On her Instagram story, Racal dedicated her milestone to her mom.
“Mom we won,” she wrote.
According to the jury’s statement, “Sunshine” takes “a sensitive view on its modern and socially critical topic.”
The jurors noted the film “touched us not only through the acting performances, but also with its dark, yet hopeful and empowering atmosphere, which the filmmakers created with their way of storytelling.”
“It raises our awareness by confronting us with the reality of the social and political problems it addresses, which unfortunately still exist today. The film’s balance of different moral perspectives and impressive stylistic elements creates an immersive reality that feels authentic and deeply moving.”
Directed by Antoinette Jadaone, “Sunshine” follows the struggles of a young gymnast, played by Racal, who faces a life-changing decision to terminate her pregnancy ahead of her tryout for the national team.
The film also features Elijah Canlas, Xyriel Manabat, Annika Co, and Jennica Garcia.
Prior to its Berlin debut, “Sunshine” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and later screened at the Palm Springs Film Festival.

THE delay of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) parliamentary elections to Oct. 13, allows the regional government to resolve legal issues from the Supreme Court’s ruling excluding Sulu, Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. said Saturday.
In a statement, Galvez welcomed the passage of Republic Act No. 12123, which resets the elections and allows BARMM leaders to re -
solve governance and administrative concerns tied to the high court’s decision.
The new law ensures that the province will continue receiving its share of the region’s Block Grant in 2025, allowing local leaders to implement programs under national budgetary guidelines. Galvez thanked President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for signing the law, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to fulfilling peace agreements and ensuring lasting development in the Bangsamoro region.
He also commended lawmakers in both houses of Congress for acting swiftly to address the concerns of stakeholders in the region.
Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian on Saturday lauded the BARMM for the ceremonial launch of the Bangsamoro Social Protection Plan (BSPP) 2024-2028, a significant milestone for the region’s ongoing pursuit of inclusive and equitable development.
Gatchalian, who was represented in the event by Undersecretary Alan Tanjusay of the
the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Peace and Development Group (PDG), expressed deep appreciation for the commitment demonstrated by the Bangsamoro government in addressing the diverse needs of the region’s communities.
Gatchalian said the implementation of this plan will bring about positive change, empowering the most vulnerable and marginalized sectors in the region.
The BSPP 2024-2028 is a medium-term strategic framework designed to strengthen the social protection system in BARMM by promoting social justice, equity, and sustainable development in the region through the recognition of collective efforts of the private and sector various government agencies.
This plan aims to foster a more empowered, cohesive, and progressive Bangsamoro, with focus on reducing poverty and inequalities across the region and ensuring universal access to social protection interventions. Maricel V. Cruz

MAKATI City Mayor and senatorial candidate Abigail Binay has called on the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) to issue a directive that would halt the importation of sugar during the milling season.
Binay spoke with SRA Administrator Paul Azcona, encouraging him to formalize this directive. She stated, “Let us put into
writing that it will be a policy that no importation will occur during the milling season. This will surely support our farmers and help maintain sugar prices.”
She emphasized that an official directive would prevent unnecessary disruptions in the sugar industry, ensuring local farmers receive fair prices for their products.
Previously, Binay advocated for a clear policy against sugar
importation during the milling season after discussions with a group of sugar producers.
As a candidate from the Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas, she believes this policy will strengthen the sugar industry and improve the livelihoods of sugar workers.
Binay highlighted that 80% of the country’s sugar supply is sourced locally, while only 20% is imported. She noted
that the Philippines has the potential to become a major sugar producer if policies are implemented to encourage investments in modern sugar mills. These advancements would enhance local production capacity and help lower market prices.
If elected to the Senate, Binay plans to propose measures to support farmers and promote agricultural development.
WITH the commencement of the campaign period for national candidates in the 2025 midterm elections this month, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla emphasized that he will ensure the prosecution of any police officers involved in partisan politics.
“I will not hesitate to file charges and ensure that due process is followed,” Remulla stated.
“You’re familiar with my track record. I have zero tolerance for misconduct, especially within the Philippine National Police (PNP),” Remulla said during a press conference in Baguio City, part of his visit to the Police Regional OfficeCordillera Administrative Region in La Trinidad, Benguet, last Wednesday.
Remulla highlighted the Department’s efforts to pursue cases against corrupt PNP members involved in the 990-kilo drug bust in Manila in 2022.
“I immediately reviewed those cases, and now they are behind bars, so I won’t hesitate,” he said.
He also expressed full support for the “Kontra Bigay” campaign led by the Commission on Elections, adding that it should be paired with a “Kontra Tanggap” initiative.
“They should go hand in hand. It’s a two-pronged approach: Kontra Bigay and Kontra Tanggap,” Remulla emphasized.
As a former local official in Cavite, he shared that he has never supported vote-buying. “I don’t believe in vote-buying, and it has never been necessary in our province. However, it’s a cultural issue that needs to be addressed on a national level,” Remulla concluded. Rex Espiritu
KA LEODY SIGNS PACT ON FREE, SAFE EDUCATION
SENATORIAL candidate Leody De Guzman, alongside youth leaders, formalized a covenant at the Commission on Human Rights, pledging to champion free, accessible, quality, and safe education.
This agreement includes a commitment to pursue comprehensive sexuality education, a topic of contention, particularly given President Bongbong Marcos’s stated intention to veto such legislation. De Guzman emphasized the current education system’s inadequacy in addressing youth sexual education, highlighting its role in leaving them vulnerable to exploitation. He voiced his determination to push for the bill’s passage, countering the misinformation surrounding it. The signed ‘Youth Agenda’ signifies a promise to advocate for increased education funding, the rejection of mandatory ROTC revival, the mandate for schools to adopt renewable energy, and the enactment of a universal students’ Magna Carta. De Guzman reinforced his commitment to advocating for youth interests in the Senate, stating, “We need to strive to pave the way for the change that is due for the youth and the generations to come.”
ALYANSA senatorial candidate Manny Pacquiao expressed his support for the Panay-GuimarasNegros bridges project, citing its potential to boost economic growth and create jobs in the countryside.
Pacquiao underscored the importance of ensuring that infrastructure development does not harm the environment, particularly the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins in Pulupandan and Bago City. Pacquiao said there are new technologies that allow the construction of bridges without harming corals and critical habitats, as seen in other countries.
Pacquiao emphasized that government supervision is essential in the project’s implementation to ensure ecological and biodiversity safeguards. He believes that with proper planning and modern engineering solutions, infrastructure and environmental protection can go hand in hand to develop the countryside. Pacquiao also said that the administration party can implement legislative agenda that will balance progress with conservation to protect the country’s rich biodiversity. Maricel V. Cruz
SENATORIAL candidate Panfilo Lacson is proposing a win-win solution to address the concerns of jeepney operators and drivers regarding the government’s jeepney modernization program. Lacson, whose father was a jeepney driver, suggested a plan that would allow jeepney drivers to retain their individual franchises instead of transferring ownership to a cooperative. He mentioned that he would discuss this proposal with the new Transportation Secretary, Vivencio Dizon.
“Jeepney drivers or operators will retain their individual franchises, even if membership in a cooperative is required. Transferring the franchise to the cooperative makes the drivers and operators feel as though they have lost ownership,” Lacson stated during a press conference for the Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial slate in Negros Occidental. Lacson also mentioned that the government could find ways to reduce the costs of modern jeepneys, which currently cost around P2.7 million each—a price that is prohibitive for many. He suggested that cheaper electric vehicles could be sourced from countries like Korea or China.

VOTERS should choose candidates who support President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s strong position on protecting the West Philippine Sea (WPS), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Saturday.
Speaking at the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City, Commodore Jay Tarriela, the PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, stressed that candidates with a “pro-China” stance should not be elected in the upcoming May 12 midterm elections.
Tarriela emphasized the need for voters to
carefully assess whether candidates genuinely back the defense of the West Philippine Sea, merely claim to align with President Marcos’ policies, or openly support China despite ongoing tensions in the disputed area.
“This is the first time we’ll have a midterm national election where every Filipino is fully aware of the West Philippine Sea issue,” Tarriela noted.
“So, when electing senators, congressmen, or even local government officials, let’s make sure none of them are pro-China. Those who are pro-China do not prioritize the Philippines’ interests and do not consider the welfare of our Armed Forces, Philippine Coast Guard, or ordinary fishermen,” he added.
He also expressed concern about working with lawmakers or local leaders who view the WPS issue as “not a priority.”
“It would be very difficult for the AFP to
push its modernization efforts or for the PCG to acquire new vessels if those elected do not support the current administration’s policy on the WPS,” he concluded
Earlier, President Marcos said that none of his candidates are pro-China nor have they coddled criminals involved in illegal POGO activities.
“We are at a crossroads as a free nation. Do we want to return to a time when our leaders wanted us to become a province of China? Do we want to go back to the days when our country was turned into a gambling den for foreigners?” he said.
“There is no one among our candidates who applauds China and is pleased when we are bombarded with water, when our Coast Guard is hit, when our fishermen are blocked, their catch stolen, and our islands seized,” he added. Rex Espiritu
THE Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) is considering filing criminal charges against the owner of the building in Parañaque City that was recently raided due to the operation of an illegal Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO).
At the regular Saturday News Forum in Quezon City, PAOCC director and spokesperson Winston Casio stated that the PAOCC would also seek the forfeiture of the entire building, which was allegedly used by Dan Ying Gaming Corp., where POGO
workers have been operating for two years.
“Obviously, we will move for the criminal and civil forfeiture of the whole building because the POGO operations were on the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh floors,” Casio said, adding that a security agency also manned the building.
“So, the building owner will face a big problem for allowing his building to be used as a POGO hub,” he continued. He also mentioned that the building owner could face human trafficking charges for “knowingly
renting out his facility to POGO operations for the past several months.”
The owner, Casio said, apparently ignored several “red flags,” including the questionable PHP 20 million monthly lease payment.
“They must have seen the red flags. Many foreigners were coming in and out of the building. They probably noticed there were many computers. All of these are red flags, but they did not fulfill their social responsibility,” he said.
A total of 435 POGO workers, including 148 foreign nationals,
were arrested during a raid on the Chinese-run POGO hub inside the ATI building in front of the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange on Thursday night.
Among those arrested were 136 Chinese nationals, five Vietnamese, three Malaysians, two Thais, one Taiwanese, and one Indonesian, Casio said.
Casio also stated that Dan Ying Gaming Corp. is allegedly owned by a “well-known” FilipinoChinese businessman. The PAOCC is still in the process of identifying the beneficial owners and corporators of the gaming firm.

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called for the creation of a national task force to coordinate government efforts in responding to the impact of Kanlaon Volcano’s eruption and to develop a long-term redevelopment plan for affected communities.
During a situation briefing, the
President emphasized the importance of strengthening government preparedness and response to natural disasters.
“It seems necessary to form a Task Force Kanlaon for long-term recovery, including relocations. Plans to purchase land and build new houses should be included. No further construction will take place
in the affected area,” Mr. Marcos said. He directed key government agencies and local government units to collaborate on a comprehensive strategy: “Let’s decide which agencies should be involved [in the task force], then sit down together with all the relevant agencies and put together a plan.”
According to the President, the
Office of Civil Defense (OCD) will lead the task force.
He also called for the construction of permanent evacuation centers outside the six-kilometer danger zone to provide safer shelters for displaced residents.
Currently, 2,660 families, or 8,509 individuals, are housed in 23 evacuation centers in Western and Central Visayas due to the ongoing volcanic activity. However, if the alert level is raised to 4, as warned by Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum, an additional 90,000 people may need to be evacuated.
The Kanlaon Volcano in Negros experienced 14 volcanic earthquakes on Friday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Saturday. The volcano, which spans the provinces of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental, also released 1,857 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on the same day.
Weak plumes were observed rising from the volcanic crater, reaching heights of up to 75 meters and drifting westward. PHIVOLCS reported that the edifice of Kanlaon Volcano remains inflated. Alert Level 3 (Intensified Unrest/Magmatic Unrest) is still in effect for Kanlaon Volcano.
THE Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations (ACTO) announced Saturday its continued pursuit of a provisional fare increase to mitigate the impact of escalating fuel costs. ACTO chairperson Liberty de Luna stated in a radio interview that a P2 provisional fare increase would be sufficient for public utility vehicles.
De Luna explained that even a P1 increase would be welcomed, but a P2 increase would set the minimum fare for traditional jeepneys at P15 and modern jeepneys at P17. She emphasized the dire financial situation of jeepney drivers, whose daily income can dwindle to as low as P150 under current fare rates. The “provisional” nature of the fare hike is crucial, according to de Luna. Should fuel prices decline, the fare increase would be automatically reduced. Specifically, she stated that once diesel prices return to P40 per liter, the provisional fare increase would be eliminated.
De Luna highlighted the necessity of the increase, noting that while they secured a P1 provisional increase two years ago from a requested P5, the continuous surge in fuel prices has severely strained drivers and operators. Therefore, a P2 provisional fare increase is now deemed essential to alleviate their financial burden.

BI AGENTS HALT ENTRY OF 124 FOREIGNERS FOR BEING RUDE
BUREAU of Immigration (BI) officers barred the entry of 124 aliens last year for being rude and disrespectful to immigration officers.
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said the number of rude passengers turned back in 2023 was slightly higher than the 64 foreigners who were similarly denied entry in 2023. Viado said that aside from sending them back to their point of origin, these discourteous individuals were blacklisted and prohibited from reentering the country for being undesirable aliens.
He said that verbally or physically assaulting immigration officers cannot be tolerated as such acts will warrant appropriate sanctions from the BI, including kicking out the rude passenger.
There were reports indicating that some passengers were intoxicated and causing a scene, while others acted arrogantly, hurling insults and offensive language towards Filipinos and the government. Viado cited the case of an unnamed

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump fired top US military officer General Charles “CQ” Brown on Friday, part of a major shake-up of the armed forces’ leadership.
Trump offered no explanation for Brown’s dismissal less than two years into his four-year term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which followed sweeping layoffs of federal workers and moves to dismantle government institutions just a month into the president’s second term.
Brown had been nominated to the top military role by Democratic president Joe Biden and became only the second Black person to hold the position.
Following Trump’s announcement on Brown, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said he was seeking a replacement for Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the first woman to serve as the top US Navy officer.
Trump thanked Brown for “his over 40 years of service to our country” in a post on his Truth Social platform, describing him as “a fine gentleman and
an outstanding leader.”
Brown has commanded a fighter squadron and two fighter wings, as well as US air forces under the Central Command and Indo-Pacific Command. He had served as Joint Chiefs chairman since October 2023.
Following the 2020 murder of a Black man, George Floyd, by a white police officer in Minnesota, Brown — an experienced fighter pilot with more than 3,000 flight hours, 130 of them in combat — recorded an emotional video about his personal experiences, including with discrimination in the US military.
“I’m thinking about my Air Force career, where I was often the only African American in my squadron or as a senior officer, the only African American in the room,” Brown said.
“I’m thinking about the pressure I felt to perform
error-free, especially for supervisors I perceived had expected less from me as an African American.”
Hegseth had advocated for Brown’s firing in a November podcast appearance, saying any top officers “involved in any of the DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) woke shit has got to go,” but told journalists last month that he was “looking forward to working” with the general.
Trump said he was nominating Air Force Lieutenant General Dan Caine to replace Brown.
He said Caine — whom he recently described meeting in Iraq during his first term — is “an accomplished pilot, national security expert, successful entrepreneur, and a ‘warfighter’ with significant interagency and special operations experience.”
Caine served in positions including associate director for military affairs at the CIA, as well as in various operational and staff roles, including more than 150 hours in combat as an F-16 pilot, an aircraft in which he logged more than 2,800 hours.
CARACAS , Venezuela — With a monthly salary of $15, a teacher in Venezuela earns nowhere near enough to cover their basic food necessities, never mind rent or medicine.
Many in the crisis-stricken South American country are forced to work multiple jobs or pool their money with family.
Thousands have emigrated in pursuit of greater financial stability.
“For the past two years, the situation has been horrible; you can’t even buy shoes,” 70-year-old Maria
Cerezo, who has been a teacher in the public sector for 39 years, told AFP at a thrift shop in the capital Caracas.
She had just selected a blue nylon dress with white polka dots – and a price tag of $2. She hid the garment behind other clothes for sale.
“I’ll get it tomorrow, God willing, because I don’t have the money today,” Cerezo explained.
She remembers a time when a teacher would buy “clothes, shoes, electrical appliances” with their yearly bonus.
Nowadays, “it’s not possible.”
A basket of food essentials for a family of four in Venezuela costs about $500 a month, 33 times the salary of a teacher — a profession that has historically been underpaid, but never as little as now.
Cerezo’s family budget is augmented by the salaries of her daughter — also a teacher — and her husband, a lawyer.
An 80-percent drop in GDP over a decade of increasingly repressive rule by President Nicolas Maduro since 2013 has pushed more than eight million Venezuelans — a quarter of
the population — to seek a better life elsewhere. A public sector teacher’s salary is not even among the lowest.
The minimum salary in Venezuela today is $2 a month, which the government supplements with subsidies.
In the private sector, the average monthly income is about $200.
Most public schools today operate only two or three days a week so that teachers can work additional jobs. Some give private lessons, others drive taxis or sell crafts. AFP

THE Associated Press filed a lawsuit against three White House officials on Friday after the news agency was barred from some of US President Donald Trump’s events.
The AP, in the suit filed in a federal court in Washington, said the denial of access violates the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and of the press.
The White House began blocking AP journalists from the Oval Office 10 days ago over the news agency’s refusal to follow Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”
The ban on AP reporters was later extended to Air Force One.
The news group said it was bringing the suit against three Trump administration officials to “vindicate its rights to the editorial independence guaranteed by the United States Constitution.”
“The White House has ordered The Associated Press to use certain words in its coverage or else face an indefinite denial of access,” the AP said.
“The press and all people in the United States have the right to choose their own words and not be retaliated against by the government,” it said.
“The Constitution does not allow the government to control speech. Allowing such government control and retaliation to stand is a threat to every American’s freedom.” AFP
MYANMAR RETURNS OVER 100 CHINA SCAM WORKERS
MYANMAR handed over more than 100 Chinese scam center workers to be repatriated through Thailand on Saturday, the third batch in a major crackdown on illegal operations.
Hundreds of foreigners are expected to be sent home from scam compounds in Myanmar over the coming weeks, with the first two batches already flown out on Thursday and Friday.
The compounds are run by criminal gangs and staffed by foreigners, many of whom say they were trafficked and forced to swindle people around the world in protracted internet scams.
Myanmar’s junta said in a statement that a third group of 111 Chinese nationals was handed over on Saturday via the ThailandMyanmar Friendship Bridge 2 at the Thai border town of Mae Sot.
Live footage on Thai media outlet The Reporters showed people disembarking from two doubledecker coaches and boarding a Southern China Airlines plane, a scene similar to that witnessed by AFP journalists on Thursday. It said that the first 50 Chinese nationals boarded a 10:40 a.m. (0340 GMT) flight, with the rest expected to depart on two additional flights throughout the day. AFP
DISINFO BLIZZARD HITS GERMANY BEFORE POLLS
STORIES of a pre-election state of emergency, police escorts for toddlers and forged ballot papers — a blizzard of online disinformation has targeted German voters ahead of Sunday’s election.
Russia has been the main suspect, and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) the main beneficiary, says Berlin.
NORTHRIDGE, United States — For a film about sex work to win an Oscar is rare. For it to win the respect of sex workers is even rarer.
If Sean Baker’s “Anora” triumphs at the Academy Awards next Sunday, as predicted by most pundits, it will have achieved both.
“Sean gets sex work. He just does,” porn actress and director Casey Calvert tells AFP, as she prepares to film an explicit lesbian scene on a set in the San Fernando Valley.
“Sean is the only working mainstream filmmaker who has the ability to get it right. He’s also the only one who cares about getting it right,” adds adult film veteran Eli Cross, who is the cinematographer for the day.
Baker’s journey to the Oscars began in this valley next to Los Angeles, infamously and accurately dubbed the capital of the US porn industry.
Itwasherethatheshot“Starlet,”amicro-budget film about a young adult actress who forms an
unlikely friendship with an elderly widow. Baker’s candid portrayal of an industry used to being maligned and sensationalized by Hollywood earned him the friendship of porn workers like Calvert, who later worked as a paid consultant on his film “Red Rocket.”
She will be among the many pornographers and sex workers cheering on “Anora” as it competes for best picture, best director, best actress for Mikey Madison, and much more on March 2.
“It’s so exciting to me that I can’t even think about it,” says Calvert.
“It would feel like this industry that I love being recognized on a stage it’s never been recognized before on.”
“Anora” follows Ani, a New York stripper and escort, as she embarks on an ill-fated, whirlwind romance with a bratty young Russian customer who turns out to be the son of an oligarch. AFP
On top of all that, Trump ally Elon Musk has weighed in, insulting German political leaders and strongly backing the Moscowfriendly AfD, mainly via his social media platform X.
Pointing directly to Russia at a time of soaring tensions over the Ukraine war, Germany on Friday said it had detected attempts to meddle in the campaign.
“The goal of these influence operations is to destroy confidence in democracy, to question the integrity of the electoral process,” said interior ministry spokesman Maximilian Kall.
Security officials had reason to suspect the Kremlin-linked Storm-1516 network was behind some of the online campaigns, he told a Berlin news conference. But Kall stressed that “the free electoral process in Germany is guaranteed, and we will continue to promptly refute relevant misinformation.” AFP

IN THE absence of a centralized credit database, identifying the right customers from the outset is one of the biggest challenges for financial technology companies like Tala.
Tala general manager Moritz Gasti said their primary focus is on attracting and retaining the right customers, whether through digital advertisements or physical engagements such as booths and agents. Providing an optimal user experience ensures that customers stay with Tala and grow financially.
With over $2.5 billion deployed in the Philippines, the company has helped millions of individuals who might otherwise struggle to secure financial support.
Through its flagship initiative, TALAkayan, the company conducts financial literacy workshops across the provinces, educating communities about responsible borrowing and money management.
“The more we speak to our customers, the better we understand their real needs,” Gastl said.
Gastl, a German national who has lived in the Philippines for 12 years, is deeply invested in the country’s financial landscape. Married and wellacquainted with the local culture, he considers the Philippines to be his second home.
His career has revolved around fund management from the very beginning, giving him a deep understanding of how financial services can drive economic empowerment.
ACCESSIBLE CREDIT
Tala leverages a data-driven approach, using digital advertising, physical engagements, and appbased insights to reach potential borrowers.
“It’s not just about onboarding customers; it’s about ensuring they have the best possible experience so they stay with us and grow financially,” Gastl said.
Unlike traditional banks, which focus on larger loan sizes and business financing, Tala serves individuals earning between P5,000 and P50,000 per month—many of whom work in essential service roles such as teaching, security, and government positions.
GLOBAL money transfer company, Wise, has recently launched the PHP Account Details for customers in the Philippines, allowing users such as freelancers, international students, and expats to receive payments in Philippine Pesos (PHP) with zero fees directly into their Wise Account. By eliminating the need for a traditional bank account or local address, Wise offers a more convenient and seamless way to manage finances.
“PHP Account Details, along with the ability to instantly top up Wise accounts and card transactions through InstaPay, are among the most requested features from our users. We believe these enhancements will help customers seamlessly manage their finances and enjoy a more convenient payment experience,” said Wise Philippines country manager Areson Cuevas. Since entering the
Philippine market in May 2024, Wise has continuously introduced new features to support Filipinos in managing their finances across borders.
Tala’s loans, ranging from P1,000 to P25,000, provide immediate financial support for everyday needs, such as medical emergencies or urgent expenses.
As an app-based lending platform, Tala benefits from the growing digital adoption in the Philippines. More consumers now prefer online transactions, moving away from informal lenders and embracing digital financial solutions.
“In the provinces, people often have limited borrowing options,” Gastl said. “We provide a more transparent and legitimate alternative.”
While digital banks like Maya, GCash and GoTyme operate in overlapping spaces, Tala sees them as complementary rather than direct competitors.
“They typically serve customers just below traditional banks, whereas we reach those who are even more underserved,” he said.
EXPANDING REACH
Looking ahead, Tala is focused on expanding its reach within the Philippines by strengthening its distribution channels online and offline. A global technology company, Tala unleashes the economic power of the global majority using credit, payments, and other financial services across three continents.
In the Philippines, customers have used Tala products to start and expand small businesses.
“We dedicate 90 to 95 percent of our efforts to ensuring we serve the right people here,” Gastl emphasized.
Tala operates under the regulatory framework of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), maintaining strict compliance with lending rate caps and financial regulations.
FUTURE OF FINANCIAL SERVICES
Gastl’s career in finance spans investment banking and fintech leadership. He started in fund
Recently, the company gained direct access to InstaPay, the country’s instant payments infrastructure, enabling transfers in under 20 seconds. This allows users to quickly fund their Wise Account and card transactions through bank transfers or e-wallets like GCash and Maya. The addition of PHP Account Details brings Wise’s total number of available account details to 23. These include currencies like GBP, AUD, CAD, EUR, NZD, SGD, USD, and TRY. Each set of account details is unique to the user, allowing them to share it with friends, companies, or clients to receive money globally without unnecessary fees.
management, working as an M&A Associate at investment bank Mabuhay Capital Corporation before moving to RCBC as a senior investment associate. He later took on leadership roles as vice president for Growth at First Circle and as a director at insurance tech firm Bolttech.
With a degree in International Business from Maastricht University and a certification as a treasury professional from Ateneo de Manila, he brings both global and local expertise to Tala’s mission.
Despite his corporate background, Gastl enjoys staying connected with Tala’s customers. He often participates in TALAkayan sessions to better understand the struggles of everyday Filipinos.
“I love being in the field and
talking to people. Numbers and data are important, but hearing real stories from our customers is what truly drives me,” he said. Outside of work, Gastl is an avid traveler and outdoor enthusiast. He enjoys exploring different parts of the Philippines, from its bustling cities to its remote islands.
Having witnessed the rapid transformation of financial services in the Philippines over the past decade, Gastl believes the country is ahead of the curve in digital payments.
“Before, people were skeptical of online lending,” he said. “Now, it’s second nature to borrow, send money, and pay bills through a phone, and we’re here to provide financial access in ways that were never possible before.”

Cumpas expressed optimism that the industry could surpass the 2019 sales record in 2025.
MDPPA’s positive outlook for 2025 is based on several factors, including
the upcoming national election, anticipated favorable economic conditions, and supportive house bills currently under consideration that are aimed at benefiting the motorcycle industry. These factors have led MDPPA to project a 5% growth rate for the coming year. Analyzing market segmentation, the automatic motorcycle category continues to dominate sales, accounting for 64% of the total market share. The Business Unit (BU) category holds 17% of the market, while moped motorcycles make up 16.3%. Street bikes and big bikes share the remaining 2.7%

STAKES just got a lot higher for running enthusiasts joining the biggest running series in the country.
Sante Barley Trilogy Run Asia presented by HOKA and GOMO has partnered with the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) and is now sanctioned by World Athletics.
The running series, which started in 2010 and organized by RUNRIO, will now earn world ranking points for the participants – the newest addition to this year’s edition.
“Gusto naming makatulong on how we can help improve our local athletes through our races and provide a platform for them to not just use it as a quali er for the international races but also maybe lead to them becoming national athletes,” said RUNRIO president and CEO Rio de la Cruz on Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum.
Cagayan de Oro will lift the curtains for the series on March 2,
with subsequent rst legs will happen in Iloilo (March 9), Manila (March 16), Davao (March 23), and Cebu (March 30) catering to the 5K, 10K, and 16K races.
“We’ve opened about 10,000 slots for the first leg and we’re happy to say that it’s already sold out,” said de la Cruz.
The second leg of the series will have 5K, 10K, and 16K races and is slated from May to June, while the third legs which will have 5K, 10K, and 21K races will be from July to August.
The National Finals will have 5K, 10K, 21K, and 42K races on Nov. 9 at the SM Mall of Asia Complex.
The Sante Barley Trilogy Run Asia also has Gatorade as its official sports drink, Le Minerale as official hydration partner, Seiko and Nyxsys as sponsors, and has teamed up with local organizers Coco Running (Cebu), Horizons Concepts Unlimited (Iloilo), Cagayan Circle Production (Cagayan de Oro), and Kinetix Sports (Davao).
“Freddie” Hubalde, snatched the ‘77 MVP title from his more illustrious ‘mates when he took over the spot of the injured Adornado that season.
• Cebu’s Arnulfo
“Arnie” Tuadles(+) seamlessly transitioned from the MICAA to the PBA during the ‘79 season and earned a starting ve spot as a rookie with powerhouse Toyota. After three brilliant conferences, he was named ROTY and along with it cop a 1st Team Mythical selection. He was the rst pro to do it. Yet his name isn’t on both the PBA’s top 25 and top 40 lists either.
• Fortunato “Atoy” Co was the rst and the fastest to score 5,000 points in the PBA in 1979. And in the same season dueled Toyota’s Abe King to a scoring duel by shooting a 50 piece and the former San Beda Red Lion made a career-high 60, in a
contest won by Crispa.
• Royal Tru Orange of the famed San Miguel Corp franchise won their rst chip in ‘79 over a handicapped Toyota side. Playing with imports Bruce “Sky” King and rookie reinforcement Andrew Fields, Utah Jazz vet Otto Moore and Larry Pounds. PBA pioneer and national team mainstay, Rosalio “Yoyong” Martirez becomes a PBA champion.
• The Co-Fernandez MVP race of ‘79, the razor-thin margin was only settled with the argument, “Fernandez will win future MVPs, so let’s give it to Co”. And Fernandez did too, he won four during the 1980s, ‘82, ‘84, ‘86, and ‘88. Two decades later, the same scenario happened with Asaytono and Agustin. But it didn’t pan out for the Bull, having him fall o from the Top 25 and 40 PBA list as well.
for the PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup semi nals against rival TNT. NLEX head coach Jong Uichico, a holder of nine PBA titles he won with three di erent teams during an illustrious coaching career, will speak about various ball screen defense and rotation at 1 p.m. Former PBA coach Alex Compton and multi-titled former National University women’s basketball team shot caller Patrick Aquino will then wrap up the coaching session as they speak about pressure defense and disruptive zone press, respectively. The clinic is open to everyone, including those who are just starting out in their career or those who are eager to further expand their expertise. Those who are interested can register at: https://forms.gle/RfVNDpHdt9TVWXeA6
The Trilogy Asia will now earn world-ranking points for the participants.
“We’re happy to see the running community get bigger and see more organizers stage more events.
At the end of the day, we just want to encourage the public to be more active and embrace a healthy
lifestyle,” said de la Cruz. For more information, please visit bit.ly/TRA2025.

FILIPINO padel players, led by Marian Capadocia and Joan Tao Yee Tan, are set to make an impact in the Manila leg of the ongoing 2025 Asia Paci c Padel Tour (APPT), taking place at the Play Padel courts in Mandaluyong. Capadocia and Tan are coming off an impressive season, having clinched victories in two legs of the tour last year— Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Now, they aim to showcase their skills on home soil in the women’s pro division.
“The men’s and women’s teams performed well last year,” said national head coach Bryan Casao. “Marian and Tao Yee reached the nals
in two legs for the women’s side, while the men’s team made it as far as the quarter nals in several tournaments.”
In Singapore, Capadocia and Tan triumphed over Kotomi Ozawa and Beatrice Gumulya in a thrilling Grand Slam nal, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. They followed it up with another stellar performance in Kuala Lumpur, defeating Nagomi Utsumi and Ozawa, 7-5, 6-1. With a total prize pool of $10,000 per leg, this weekend’s tournament promises to be an exciting showcase of top-tier padel talent. The 2025 APPT features seven tournaments, with the second leg set to take place in Batangas next weekend.
“We’re thrilled to host the APPT event in Manila for the third time,” said
APPT president Carlos Carillo, speaking alongside Padel Pilipinas executive director Jackie Gan.
This year, the APPT is introducing a new competition tier—the Challenger Series. These events, organized by local clubs, are officially linked to the APPT and provide rising talents the opportunity to compete at a high level. So far, over 100 players have signed up for the tour, including 20 members of the Philippine national pool. Among them is team captain LA Canizares, who will be competing alongside Joseph Serra, Gogo Allian, Mac Gulpo, and Johnny Arcilla—who, like Capadocia, transitions between lawn tennis and padel.

CORIANDER, also known as cilantro, is a common herb used in various cuisines. It has a distinct citrusy flavor and is often added to soups, salads, and curries. While many humans enjoy coriander for its taste and nutritional benefits, cat owners may wonder whether this herb is safe for their feline companions.
Coriander or Chinese parsley in Tagalog is wansoy, unsoy, silantro, or kulantro.
The good news for pet owners is that coriander is not toxic to cats. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), coriander is not listed as a toxic plant for cats. This means that if your cat happens to nibble on a coriander leaf or two, it is unlikely to cause any severe health issues.
Add coriander to their protein source like fish or chicken
“While coriander is not poisonous to cats, it does not mean it should be a staple in their
diet. Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their bodies are designed to derive nutrition primarily from animal-based proteins,” said Dr. Hailey Parker in the “Cat Friendly and Herb Guide” published in the Pet Planet website.
“Although small amounts of plant matter may not harm them, a diet rich in herbs and vegetables does not provide the essential nutrients cats need to thrive,” Dr. Parker added.
Although coriander is not necessary for a cat’s diet, it does have some properties that may offer minor health benefits if consumed
in small amounts.
According to Dr. Parker, here are some potential benefits of coriander:
1. Rich in Antioxidants – Coriander contains antioxidants that can help combat oxidative stress and support overall health.
2. Aids Digestion – In humans, coriander is known for its digestive benefits, and it may have a mild soothing effect on a cat’s stomach.
3. Anti-Inflammatory Properties – Coriander has been studied for its anti-inflammatory properties, which could help with minor discomfort or irritation.
4. Source of Vitamins and Minerals – Coriander contains vitamins A, C, and K, as well as minerals like calcium and potassium, which may contribute to overall well-being, although in minimal amounts for cats.
Despite these potential benefits, it is important to remember that cats should obtain their essential nutrients from a balanced, meatbased diet rather than plant sources.
Possible Risks of Feeding
While coriander is generally safe, there are a few potential risks associated with giving it to your cat:
1. Digestive Upset – Some cats have sensitive stomachs, and consuming new food, including coriander, can lead to mild gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting or diarrhea.
2. Allergic Reactions – Although rare, some cats may be allergic to certain plants, including coriander. Signs of an allergic reaction include itching, swelling, or respiratory distress.
3. Overconsumption Risks – Feeding a large amount of coriander may not be toxic, but it could interfere with your cat’s appetite, leading to an imbalanced diet.
4. Choking Hazard – Coriander leaves and
stems could pose a choking risk, especially for smaller cats or those who do not chew their food thoroughly.
How to Safely Offer Coriander
If you want to introduce coriander to your cat’s diet, follow these guidelines to ensure their safety:
• Offer in Small Amounts – A tiny amount of fresh coriander leaves is sufficient to see if your cat likes it and tolerates it well.
• Monitor for Reactions – Observe your cat for any signs of digestive upset or allergic reactions after eating coriander.
• Wash Thoroughly – Always wash coriander before offering it to your cat to remove pesticides or contaminants.
• Avoid Processed Coriander Products –Stay away from coriander-based sauces, seasonings, or food that contain other ingredients that may be harmful to cats, such as garlic or onions.
Alternative Safe Herbs for Cats
If you are looking for herbs that are beneficial for cats, consider the following options:
• Catnip – A well-known herb that many cats love, providing stimulation and relaxation.
• Parsley – Safe in small amounts and contains vitamins beneficial to cats.
• Basil – Non-toxic and safe for occasional nibbling.

AGUIO has always felt like a second home, and for years, The Manor has been my go-to retreat whenever I visit for the Panagbenga Festival. Waking up to the scent of pine trees and sipping coffee on the balcony as the morning mist rolls in— it’s a familiar comfort I look forward to every year.
Recently, I learned that The Manor, along with the Forest Lodge and the CAP-John Hay Trade and Cultural Center, is undergoing a management transition. Landco Lifestyle Ventures (LLV) has stepped in as the interim manager, overseeing operations at these well-loved spots in Camp John Hay. The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) is in the process of selecting a new long-term operator, but for now, LLV is at the helm.
LLV is no stranger to managing upscale leisure properties. They handle destinations like Casobe in Calatagan and Club Laiya in Batangas, so they bring experience in maintaining high-end hospitality. Their task? To keep things running smoothly at Camp John Hay while ensuring guests still get the warm and relaxing experience they’ve come to love.
The Manor and Forest Lodge offer more than just a place to stay—they provide a cozy escape in the middle of nature. With 163 rooms, including 47 suites, The Manor blends luxury with rustic charm. Whether it’s indulging in spa treatments, enjoying a fine meal, or unwinding at the bar, every moment here is about relaxation. Forest Lodge, on the other hand, gives off a more laid-back vibe, perfect for those who want a quieter stay in Baguio’s cool climate.
Beyond accommodations, the CAP-John Hay Trade and Cultural Center remains a key venue for large gatherings. From corporate events to cultural showcases, its 2,300-seat capacity and expansive stage make it a prime spot for conferences and performances.
Camp John Hay itself holds a rich history, once serving as a retreat for American soldiers before becoming one of Baguio’s top destinations. Whether it’s zip-lining, trekking through pine forests, or playing a round of golf on a course designed by Jack Nicklaus, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the outdoors here. LLV’s leadership aims to keep the spirit of Camp John Hay alive while elevating the guest experience.
While BCDA has yet to announce when a permanent operator will take over, one thing remains certain—The Manor, Forest Lodge, and the entire Camp John Hay area continue to welcome guests looking for a memorable mountain escape.
For reservations, you can reach The Manor at (074) 424-0931, Forest Lodge at (074) 4222075 to 75, and the John Hay Convention Center at (074) 422-2075 to 76, local 601.
