MARCOS CALLS ON SOLDIERS

TO ADAPT TO EVOLVING THREATS

GOV’T MUST LISTEN TO PEOPLE TO WIN OVER TODAY’S ADVERSITIES

PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. warned of the evolving nature of security threats, emphasizing the growing challenges in cyberspace and urging the Philippine Army to stay adaptable and disciplined.

Speaking at the Army’s 128th founding anniversary celebration, Mr. Marcos highlighted the necessity of modernizing defense strategies to address both conventional and emerging threats.

“Ours is a world that continues to evolve,” the President said.

“Threats have grown increas-

ingly more complex, and the battleground is no longer contained in land—it now extends into cyberspace and beyond,” he added.

“To achieve this, the government must lead by example, we strive for a government that listens, that acts and serves with integrity. That is the only way to rise above adversities and move forward as a people,” he added.

Beyond military defense, the President praised the Army’s dedication

In the same speech, Marcos said the government must listen and serve with integrity amid adversities happening in the society. He emphasized that when peace and order are in place, the country can work towards prosperity.

RODY SHOULD BE TRIED BY LOCAL COURT— INC

THE influential church group Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) weighed in on the arrest and surrender of former President Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of crimes against humanity.

“Any Filipino or citizen of our country who has committed a violation of our laws should be tried here in our country. Why? Because our justice system works,” INC spokesperson Bro. Edwin Zabala said in Filipino over NET25 late Friday

“We are not saying that the former president should not be tried for the charges against him. As for us, the Iglesia ni Cristo

trusts in the integrity and competence of the judiciary to decide such matters and issues,” he added.

He also recalled the INC’s nationwide Rally for Peace on January 13 where they reiterated their call for “peace, unity, and the need to first address the problems of our country and our countrymen, instead of moves that will only result in conflict and division.”

“What’s sad is that the people in charge didn’t listen to the call of the Iglesia ni Cristo,” said Zabala, referring to the decision of the House of Representatives to proceed with the impeachment

of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Meanwhile, detained former president Rodrigo Duterte has told Vice President Sara Duterte that he has surrendered his fate to God, choosing to accept whatever comes his way.

“According to him, the governance in our country is clearly fractured and the people are disgruntled. So, that’s what he said,” Sara said in a mix of English and Filipino during an ambush interview with Philippine media at The Hague on Friday.

“He said, ‘I will leave that all to God... I will leave it all to God all that will happen in my life. So be it,’” she added.

SENATOR Imee Marcos and Las Piñas Representative Camille Villar will remain with the administration’s senatorial slate, according to Navotas Representative and Alyansa Para Sa Bagong Pilipinas campaign manager Toby Tiangco.

‘’Wala, wala,’’ Tiangco said briefly during a press conference on Saturday when asked if Alyansa and the Nacionalista Party had discussed the “future” of the two senatorial candidates.

Tiangco added that such ques-

“They have proven themselves to be ready, reliable, and resolute in their sworn duty to our people,” he said.

The president acknowledged the Army’s recent achievements, including a perfect score in the General Security of Military Information Agreement evaluation, which he called a testament to its readiness and adherence to international standards.

tions were best addressed by the candidates themselves.

‘’With regards to that question, I cannot answer that question for them so like for Imee siguro siya dapat ang makasagot ng tanong na ‘yun, hindi po kami,’’ he said.

Marcos and Villar were both absent from Alyansa’s 10th campaign sortie in Cavite on Friday. Only Imee was left out of the endorsement speech delivered by her brother, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Imee had already said she would be skipping the Alyansa sorties to be able to focus on the hearings of her Senate committee’s probe of the arrest and surrender of former President Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court. Rep. Villar, on the other hand, has been absent from the Alyansa campaign after her parents and brother, Sen. Mark Villar, expressed their opposition to Duterte bring tried by a foreign court.

PBBM CITES COMMITMENT

OF GOV’T TO BASIC SERVICES

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized the government’s commitment to providing essential services to Filipinos during a visit to Biñan, Laguna, where he led a comprehensive jobs and health services fair on Friday.

Speaking at the event, President Marcos underscored the importance of collaboration between national and local governments in addressing public needs through a wholeof-government approach.

“We are here to ensure that services reach our people,” Mr. Marcos said.

matching job seekers with suitable opportunities.

“We are addressing the gap where workers are ready but lack the specific training required by employers. Through job matching, we connect workers with the right opportunities,” he said.

In addition to employment services, the event provided free medical consultations, laboratory services, and diagnostic tests.

The fair included a job fair organized by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), offering 2,700 employment opportunities from 25 participating companies.

President Marcos praised the participating employers and highlighted the government’s efforts in

“As long as you need assistance, your government will stand by you,” he added.

President Marcos expressed gratitude to healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and medical technologists, who volunteered their time.

He also acknowledged the role of the DOLE’s Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program in support-

ing displaced workers and providing temporary livelihood opportunities. Additionally, beneficiaries of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) 1 were present, with some celebrating their graduation from government aid. Key Cabinet officials, including DOLE Secretary Benny Laguesma, Department of Health Secretary Ted Herbosa, and Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rex Gatchalian, joined Mr. Marcos. The president reaffirmed the government’s dedication to continuing these outreach efforts nationwide. “Even when I am not physically present, these service fairs will continue across the country,” the president said. “Your government is here to serve,” he added.

NO TYPHON MISSILE FOR US-PH ‘SALAKNIB’ MILITARY DRILLS

THE US-made Typhon missile system will not be part of this year’s iteration of “Salaknib,” Major General Jeffrey VanAntwerp, deputy chief of staff of operations, plans, and training of US Army Pacific, said.

“We are not planning to conduct live-fire in the Philippines right now,” VanAntwerp told reporters in a media briefing.

“Salaknib” is an annual bilateral exercise led by the Philippine Army and sponsored by the US Army Pacific.

This news comes almost a year after the Philippine Army’s 1st Multi-Domain Task Force transported a Typhon launcher to Luzon as part of the 2023 Salaknib exercise—marking the first time the new capability, deemed vital to the US Army’s strategy in the Indo-Pacific, had been deployed.

The missile system traveled more than 8,000 miles from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, aboard a C-17 Globemaster cargo aircraft on a

15-hour flight.

Army Spokesperson Colonel Louie Dema-ala said Salaknib’s objectives are enhancement in territorial defense operations, sustainment, interoperability, and humanitarian civil assistance.

The exercises will consist of over 5,000 troops, 2,000 from the US Army and 3,000 from the Philippine Army.

Typhon has since remained in the country, angering China, which has criticized the move and warned it could destabilize the region. Officials have yet to fire the missile system in the Philippines.

It is unclear how long Typhon will remain in the Philippines or if it will go elsewhere in the Pacific theater.

It is designed to enhance the US and Philippine Army’s capacity and interoperability across the spectrum of military operations while strengthening the ties between the two longstanding allies. The exercises will run from March 24 until May 9.

Program (4Ps) beneficiaries who are considered the poorest members as well as those living in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).

ARMED FORCES REMAINS SOLID — DND CHIEF

This initiative aims to transition these beneficiaries to e-wallets, eliminating the need for long and often dangerous journeys to ATMs.

Gatchalian emphasized the hardships faced by these beneficiaries, who sometimes travel up to eight hours to withdraw their grants, incurring significant transportation costs and security risks.

DEFENSE Secretary Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. on Saturday said there’s no reason to doubt the professionalism of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

By using smartphones, they can access their funds through GCash, which has a wide network of merchants nationwide.

“It has never been unsolid, and I have no reason to doubt that they will remain professional and follow their duty according to the Constitution, with supremacy remaining,” Teodoro told reporters at the sidelines of the Philippine Army anniversary ceremonies in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig.

The DSWD will also provide digital literacy training to ensure beneficiaries can effectively use the smartphones, not only for receiving grants but also for potential livelihood opportunities. The department is collaborating with the BPI Foundation, Globe, and GCash to deliver this financial digital literacy training.

Earlier this week, Teodoro told a Senate panel that the AFP had no role in Duterte’s arrest as the institution has “no law enforcement mandate.”

Gatchalian expressed gratitude to Globe for donating the mobile phones, recognizing the significant improvement this will bring to the lives of the poorest 4Ps beneficiaries.

Philippine Army spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala also said that military troops remained in high morale despite the controversy generated by the arrest and surrender of fomer President Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court. (ICC).

The 4Ps program, established to reduce poverty and invest in human capital, provides conditional cash transfers to poor households, focusing on improving children’s health, nutrition, and education.

“We are a professional organization. We are focused on fulfilling our mandate,” he said.

MEDIALDEA CHECKS OUT OF HOSPITAL —SEN. GO

FORMER executive secretary Salvador Medialdea has been discharged from a hospital in the Netherlands, according to Senator Bong Go on Saturday.

Go posted a photo of Medialdea on his official Facebook account, saying that the latter was already released after being confined in a hospital for a couple of days.

“Senator Bong Go is happy to announce this Saturday that former Executive Secretary Salvador ‘Bingbong’ Medialdea has been discharged from the hospital after being confined for a few days in The Hague, Netherlands,” he said in his FB post.

Medialdea was taken to hospital when he fell ill on March 18 while about to visit former President Rodrigo Duterte at the Hague Penitentiary Institution. on a stretcher and taken to a hospital via ambulance.

Medialdea was with the former president when he was flown out of the country on March 11 to face his charges before the ICC over killings in relation to the drug war.

He represented Duterte during the first pre-trial hearing of the ICC.

DFA: MARRIED WOMEN CAN RENEW PASSPORTS USING MAIDEN NAMES

THE Department of Foreign AffairsOffice of Consular Affairs (DFA-OCA) on Saturday said that married women who renew their passports may now voluntarily revert to their maiden names. In an advisory, the DFA-OCA said the reversion to maiden names was pursuant to the New Philippine Passport Act or Republic Act No. 11983.

Section 5 (f) of the law states: “For a woman who wishes to revert to the use of her maiden name, a duly authenticated birth certificate by the PSA: Provided, That she can only revert to her maiden name once and all her other existing identification cards and pertinent documents shall likewise reflect her maiden name…” With this, the DFA-OCA said that applicants who wish to avail of the reversion to their maiden names in their passports may do so under the following conditions: For those who wish to revert to their maiden names for reasons apart from those stated above: an original and photocopy of a PSA-issued Certificate of Live Birth or PSA Report of Birth; an original and photocopy of a PSA-issued Certificate of Marriage or PSA Report of Marriage; a notarized

Affidavit of Explanation that includes a request for the reversion of maiden name in the Philippine passport or travel document and stating that the applicant has not hitherto availed of the reversion; latest-issued Philippine passport or travel document; and ny valid and existing government-issued ID accepted for passport application, reflecting the maiden name of the passport applicant.

Likewise, a married woman may revert to her maiden name in her passport application by virtue of an annulment, declaration of nullity of marriage, legal separation, judiciallyrecognized foreign divorce, or death of a husband.

The DFA-OCA called on the public to use the prescribed affidavit template posted on the OCA’s website.

GROUP WELCOMES ICC ORDER ON VICTIMS’ PARTICIPATION

PHILIPPINE rights groups on Saturday welcomed the International Criminal Court (ICC) Pre-Trial Chamber I’s order the day prior directing its Victims Participation and Reparations Section to suggest a process of application and registration of victims.

“We are ready to consult with the section on the modes and mechanisms that will work best in our context,” read a press statement shared by ICC assistant to counsel lawyer Kristina Conti, who serves as counsel for drug war victims.

According to the joint statement by the National Union of

Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) and Rise Up for Life and for Rights, victims can participate in the trial by serving as witnesses, submitting views and concerns, or both.

“Their non-participation does not automatically result in the dropping of charges – so the call for some of the victims to ‘withdraw the case’ is sense -

less. Victims may express their opinion independent of the Prosecution and the Defense, and eventually engage in the determination of the civil aspect, or ICC’s terms, reparations,” the statement read. The groups “eagerly await” further instructions from the ICC and its victims’ section in the Registry for guidelines. They explained that until the charges have been confirmed by the Pre-Trial Chamber I, they cannot determine yet the exact scope of the case and the precise identity of victims who can participate.

“We anticipate that victims will be required to submit a signed application to participate with a statement of the victimhood, identification documents, proof of kinship to the victim of the killing, and other related information or documents,” the statement read.

“We must remind again that the identities of victims are protected throughout the proceedings, and that the Court will take appropriate measures to protect the safety, physical and psychological wellbeing, dignity and privacy of victims,” it added.

PINOY IN EUROPE FILES PLEA TO BLOCK ROQUE ASYLUM BID

A FORMER Filipino citizen in Europe on Friday submitted a petition letter asking the DirectorGeneral of the Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Services in the Netherlands to deny former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque’s asylum application.

In an interview with Manila Standard, Joel Vega confirmed he forwarded the petition to the office of Director-General Rhodia Maas by postal mail at 4PM (CET) or around 11PM, Philippine time.

“I hope that the DG of IND will consider petitions or reactions by Dutch citizens since the immigration policies now in the Netherlands are a controversial issue. My main reason in objecting to Roque’s asylum request is the glaring inconsistency with factual events. There are clear requirements that should be fulfilled for asylum and one of the most crucial is political persecution with real physical threat,” said Vega, who is the signatory on behalf of the ad hoc group “Concerned Filipino Citizens.”

Sought for comment through Viber, Roque responded with “wala yun.” He has said that by filing the asylum application, he won’t be extradited or arrested until the Netherlands authorities have decided on it.

Vega stressed that the case of Roque is not similar to the case of Joma Sison, claiming the former is “obviously doing it for personal advantage by hiding under the mantle of asylum processes.”

COMELEC CAN’T FILE CHARGES VS. ASPIRANT HANDING OUT MONEY

THE Commission on Elections

(Comelec) on Saturday said it cannot file charges against a local election aspirant who distributed money to the public, as this action falls outside the designated campaign period.

Comelec chairman George Garcia said the incumbent official from Negros Oriental, who was seen in a

viral video showering spectators with P500 bills, “did not technically violate” any election laws.

In an interview over Super Radyo dzBB, Garcia said the provincial official is currently regarded as an “aspirant” rather than a candidate, as the campaign period for local elective positions does not commence until March 28.

He cited a Supreme Court (SC) ruling known as the Peñera Doctrine,

which clarifies that an individual who submits a certificate of candidacy is only recognized as a candidate once the campaign period officially starts, thus making them subject to election regulations. However, the poll body chief said that residents or the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) have the option to file a complaint.

“The DILG can also submit a complaint, and any resident, occupant, or individual from the area is entitled to do the same,” Garcia said.

“Our appeal to voters is that when candidates, whether they are incumbents or not, behave in such a manner—it is their choice whether to support individuals who exploit the hardships faced by some citizens,” he added.

FOREIGN HIKERS RESCUED AFTER MULTI-DAY SEARCH

FOUR foreign hikers, including German, British, Russian, and Canadian nationals, were rescued on Saturday in the mountainous region of central Philippines, following a multi-day search.

This rescue came a day after two of their companions were found safe.

The six-man group had embarked on a four-hour hike in Negros Oriental province on Wednesday, but were caught in heavy rain and poor visibility, leading to their disappearance.

Local authorities confirmed via Facebook that the remaining four hikers were located near the Hydropower Plant in Silab, Amlan, close to the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park. The rescued individuals were identified as Germans Aldwin Fink and Wolfgang Schlenker, Russian Anton Chernov, and a Canadian named Terry.

The Amlan municipality rescue office reported that the rescued hikers were being brought down the mountain. Images from local police showed at least one hiker with bloodied legs receiving medical attention. Two of the original group, Torsten Martin Groschupp and Alexander Radvanyi, were found on Friday morning, reporting they had access to lake water and snacks.

2 DETAINED IN BOHOL AIRPORT AFTER BOMB JOKE

TWO air travelers were detained at Bohol-Panglao International Airport after making a bomb joke on a Cebu Pacific flight. The incident occurred upon landing on Saturday, leading to a security response by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).

Following the report from airport personnel, CAAP’s Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS) initiated safety protocols, including a full security inspection of the aircraft after the pilot requested the cabin and baggage be cleared. After more than an hour, authorities confirmed there was no explosive threat, and flight operations resumed. CAAP assured that all passengers and crew were safe.

CAAP emphasized that bomb jokes are a serious offense under Presidential Decree No. 1727, which prohibits false bomb threats, carrying penalties of up to five years imprisonment or a P40,000 fine.

Travelers are urged to be responsible with their statements to ensure the safety and security of all passengers.

BINAY BATS FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

SENATORIAL candidate and Makati City Mayor Abigail Binay is advocating for enhanced early childhood education to improve the Philippines’ overall education quality, emphasizing the importance of foundational literacy and numeracy skills. She said she believes focusing on Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) from daycare onward is crucial to bridge learning gaps.

Binay stressed that basic proficiency in reading, math, and science should be established from preschool to Grade 3. She questioned the K-12 program’s effectiveness in producing employable graduates, arguing that a lack of foundational skills hinders their success even after senior high school training.

She warns that poor literacy and numeracy levels must be addressed before Grade 3 to prevent students from falling behind and potentially dropping out. Binay also highlighted the need for timely interventions to ensure students can handle advanced lessons.

US TERMINATES LEGAL STATUS FOR 500,000 IMMIGRANTS

THE United States said Friday it was terminating the legal status of hundreds of thousands of immigrants, giving them weeks to leave the country.

President Donald Trump has pledged to carry out the largest deportation campaign in US history and curb immigration, mainly from Latin American nations.

The order affects around 532,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans who came to the United States under a scheme launched in October 2022 by Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden and expanded in January the following year.

GEORGE FOREMAN, 76

FORMER heavyweight champion George Foreman, who fought and lost against Muhammad Ali in boxing’s iconic 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle” before reclaiming the title two decades later, died Friday aged 76, his family announced in a statement.

“With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr, who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025, surrounded by loved ones,” Foreman’s family said in a statement posted on the boxer’s official Instagram page.

They will lose their legal protection 30 days after the Department of Homeland Security’s order is published in the Federal Register, which is scheduled Tuesday.

That means immigrants sponsored by the program “must depart the United States” by April 24 unless they have secured another immigration status allowing them to remain in the country, the order says.

Welcome.US, which supports people seeking refuge in the United States, urged those affected by the move to “immediately” seek advice from an immigration lawyer.

The Processes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans (CHNV) program, announced in January 2023, allowed entry to the United States for two years for up to 30,000

migrants per month from the four countries, which have grim human rights records.

Biden touted the plan as a “safe and humane” way to ease pressure on the crowded US-Mexico border.

But the Department of Homeland Security stressed Friday that the scheme was “temporary.”

“Parole is inherently temporary, and parole alone is not an underlying basis for obtaining any immigration status, nor does it constitute an admission to the United States,” it said in the order.

Trump last week invoked rare wartime legislation to fly more than 200 alleged members of a Venezuelan gang to El Salvador, which has offered to imprison migrants and even US citizens at a discount. AFP

TRUMP REVOKES SECURITY CLEARANCES OF BIDEN AND SENIOR AIDES

US President Donald Trump made good Friday on a threat to revoke the security clearances of his predecessor Joe Biden and several senior former White House and national security officials.

The list of names stripped of their authorization to see state secrets included Biden, his family members, and former vice-president and Trump presidential rival Kamala Harris. Former secretary of state and defeated presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was on the list, along with Biden’s secretary of state Antony Blinken and national security advisor Jacob Sullivan. In a memorandum to agency heads and distributed by the White House communications office, Trump said the named officials should no longer be allowed access to classified material.

“I hereby direct every executive department and agency head ... to revoke any active security clearances held by the aforementioned individuals,” Trump said.

“I also direct all executive department and agency heads to revoke unescorted access to secure United States Government facilities from these individuals.”

ISRAEL DEFENSE MINISTER THREATENS TO ANNEX PARTS OF GAZA

ISRAELI Defence Minister Israel Katz threatened Friday to annex parts of the Gaza Strip unless Hamas militants release the remaining Israeli hostages held in the warbattered Palestinian territory.

The warning came as Israel pressed the renewed assault it launched on Tuesday, shattering the relative calm since a January 19 ceasefire.

A Palestinian source close to the ceasefire talks told AFP late Friday that Hamas had received a proposal from mediators Egypt and Qatar for re-establishing a truce and exchanging hostages for Palestinian prisoners “according to a timeline to be agreed upon.”

The source said the proposal “includes the entry of humanitarian aid” into Gaza, which has been blocked by Israel since March 2. Israel resumed intensive bombing of Gaza on Tuesday, citing deadlock in indirect negotiations on next steps in the truce after its first stage expired this month.

Earlier, the Vice President acknowledged the possibility that her father may no longer be able return to the Philippines.

Clarifying her statement, Sara pointed out that it was about debating the legality of Duterte’s arrest in the Senate, which is now pointless.

While she continues to assert that what happened to her father was an act of “extraordinary rendition” or state-sponsored kidnapping, she emphasized that the only way forward is through the ICC’s legal process.

“What I meant back then is the discussion yesterday at the Senate hearing. They had a discussion if what was done was right, was it wrong, was it illegal, was it not illegal. Like I said, it was an extraordinary rendition,” Sara explained.

“So whatever they debate there, whether it was a kidnapping, it was an extraordinary rendition, it was correct or not correct, they cannot bring him back since he is already inside. They cannot retrieve and return him. The only way he can leave is through the system inside the ICC,” she added.

In support of the troops, Mr. Marcos announced several welfare initiatives, including the issuance of Executive Order No. 84 to increase subsistence allowances for Armed Forces personnel.

Other programs include enhanced medical benefits and streamlined hospital expense reimbursements.

“Those who dedicate their lives to serve the country must be supported,” the President said.

“While no amount can match the sacrifices our soldiers make, we hope these initiatives will help ease their burdens,” he added.

He also praised Philippine Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Roy Galido for his leadership, maintaining the Army’s high standards. The commander-in-chief concluded by encouraging soldiers to continue embracing innovation and striving for excellence, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the nation’s security.

“Together, let us ensure that the next generations will inherit a Bagong Pilipinas that is peaceful, progressive, and full of promise,” Marcos said.

The Philippine Army, established in 1897, serves as the primary ground force of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, playing a key role in national defense and disaster response.

STEM CELL TREATMENT HELPS IMPROVE SPINAL CORD INJURIES

A STEM cell treatment helped improve the motor function of two out of four patients with a spinal cord injury in the first clinical study of its kind, Japanese scientists said. There is currently no effective treatment for paralysis caused by serious spinal cord injuries, which affect more than 150,000 patients in Japan alone, with 5,000 new cases each year. Researchers at Tokyo’s Keio University are conducting their study using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) -- created by stimulating mature, already specialized, cells back into a juvenile state. They can then be prompted to mature into different kinds of cells, with the Keio researchers using iPSderived cells of the neural stem.

The university said on Friday that the motor function score for two patients improved after an operation to implant more than two million iPSderived cells into a spinal cord. AFP

OTHEL V. CAMPOS,

FOR social entrepreneur Lorielinda Marte, the journey to becoming a cultural guardian began with a single ikam mat.

Gifted to her on her wedding day, the intricately-woven mat of Bukidnon tells a story, represents a legacy and serves as a call to action.

“It all started with a single mat—a gift, a legacy, and a calling,” Marte recalled.

The mat, crafted through days of meticulous work, awakened in her a deep desire to restore the nearly forgotten tradition of ikam weaving in Bukidnon.

Brink of extinction

Decades ago, ikam weaving flourished, even with the arduous hikes to gather sodsod grass, its primary material.

The grass was dried, dyed, combed, and woven at dusk or dawn over weeks, transforming into vibrant mats adorned with intricate patterns.

Despite the beauty and cultural significance of ikam, the labor-intensive process yielded little financial reward.

“A tradition does not survive on nostalgia alone. It needs recognition, respect, and a market,” Marte explained.

By the early 2000s, the tradition was fading, with mats often bartered for a kilo of rice or fish. Weaving was seen as lowly work, and few saw a future in the craft.

TOYOTA Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP), the country’s leading mobility company, has turned over ten Toyota Lite Ace utility vans to the city governments of Santa Rosa and Pasay, each unit equipped with a one-year free subscription of ‘myToyota Shuttle PH’ and Fleet Connected Service applications from Toyota Mobility Solutions Philippines, Inc. (TMSPH).

The myToyota Shuttle PH app streamlines on-demand shuttle management by optimizing route planning and seat booking. Meanwhile, the Fleet Connected Service offers real-time GPS tracking, monitoring vehicle location, condition, and driving behavior for seamless trip planning and management. Under the Toyota Community Shuttle (TCS) program, TMP provided a free service for nearly 14 months, achieving positive results. Since its launch in December 2023, TMSPH

recorded over 10,000 unique users in Santa Rosa and more than 2,300 in Pasay, with a total of 102,000 passenger trips.

A post-experience survey among myToyota Shuttle PH users showed overwhelming support, with an average of 98 percent favoring an app-based system for public transportation.

Santa Rosa and Pasay are committed to integrating technological and digital solutions into their urban development plans as they pursue their goals of becoming a “High-Level Smart City” and a “Smart and Sustainable Eco City,” respectively.

Aligned with Toyota’s global CASE (Connected, Autonomous/Automated, Shared, and Electrified) mobility concept, TMP and TMSPH continue to develop hardware and software solutions that enhance public transportation and urban mobility in the Philippines.

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR REVIVES FADING TRADITION

Vision takes shape

Marte, captivated by the artistry and resilience embedded in ikam, refused to let the tradition disappear.

“What others saw as a dying tradition, I saw as an unbroken thread waiting to be rewoven,” she said.

In 2012, with just P500 in capital and an unwavering vision, she founded the Tagolwanen Women Weavers Association (TWWA).

Her mission was twofold: revive ikam weaving and uplift the indigenous women who had long been its custodians.

At first, she struggled to find weavers willing to join her cause. Many felt ashamed of their craft, believing it held no economic value.

But Marte saw potential where others saw a decline. “For ikam to thrive again, we had to restore its dignity and its value.”

Global recognition

With success came challenges, including the threat of imitation. In 2018, Marte secured trademark protection for TWWA through the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL).

“We realized that to preserve ikam, we needed to protect it legally. Now, we’re more empowered to safeguard our works,” Marte said.

IPOPHL continues to assist TWWA in securing

further protections, including industrial design rights and international filings

With support from IPOPHL, Marte turned to social media, determined to elevate ikam beyond local trade.

“Social media became our loom, weaving ikam’s story that went past our mountains and into the world. Every mat we create is not just a product—it is a piece of history reclaimed,” she said.

In 2012, when online shopping was still in its infancy in the Philippines, she used digital platforms to introduce ikam to a wider audience. The response was overwhelming. Orders poured in from the US, Australia, Turkey, and Europe. The newfound demand encouraged innovation—ikat patterns found their way onto handbags, baskets, and hats, expanding ikam’s reach.

By 2017, TWWA had earned a place in Manila FAME, a prestigious trade exhibition showcasing the best of Philippine exports.

Cultural advocates like Senator Loren Legarda became patrons, and TWWA’s mats were now prized as cultural art pieces rather than mere sleeping mats.

Marte and the women of TWWA have not only revived a fading tradition, but also transformed it into a source of pride and livelihood.

PH’S FIRST RWA-CERTIFIED POULTRY PRODUCER SETS THE STANDARD IN ANTIBIOTIC-FREE FARMING

BOUNTY Plus, a unit of Bounty Fresh Group Holdings, Inc., made history as the first company in the Philippines to receive the prestigious “Reared Without Antibiotics” (RWA) certification from Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Inc. (LRQA), a globally recognized assurance provider.

“This recognition reaffirms our commitment to delivering healthier, responsibly produced chicken to Filipino consumers while upholding world-class animal welfare and environmental standards. As we move forward, we remain dedicated to expanding our RWA-certified farms and feed mills,” said Bounty Fresh Group chief executive officer Kenneth Cheng.

The certification was granted after Bounty Plus farms, processing plants, and feed mills met strict requirements for raising chickens without antibiotics throughout their entire lifecycle.

Unlike the “no antibiotic residue” approach—where only the final

product is antibiotic-free—Bounty Plus’“no antibiotic ever” policy ensures birds never receive antibiotics at any stage, aligning with LRQA’s rigorous standards.

Bounty Plus’ RWA certification reflects its science-driven approach to animal health, prioritizing preventive care, optimal nutrition, and strict biosecurity measures. While not all farms have been certified yet, the company is actively expanding its antibiotic-free practices across its operations.

To help consumers easily identify antibiotic-free poultry products, all poultry from certified Bounty Plus farms will display the official LRQA RWA certification logo to cater to Filipino consumers seeking healthier, antibiotic-free protein options. The LRQA RWA certification provides third-party validation of Bounty Plus’ leadership in responsible poultry farming and its mission to offer safe, high-quality chicken that consumers can trust.

LOTUS BRINGS MOTORSPORTS TO EVERYONE

THE Philippine Rallycross Series (PHRX) and the Philippine National Rally Championship (PNRC) celebrated their 2024 champions last March 14 in Quezon City where the event recognized drivers across various categories in the nation’s premier rally competitions, sanctioned by the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP).

Caloy Calica, Louie Camacho, Paul Santos, Mike Reyes, EZ Ligaya, and Gabbie Desales were among the champions honored. The 2024 PHRX featured seven rounds across Pasig, Pasay, and Cavite, with courses testing drivers on both tarmac and dirt. The PNRC, consisting of three rounds in Tarlac and Nueva Ecija, challenged competitors with grueling gravel and dirt stages.

The 2025 season promises expansion, with the PHRX maintaining seven rounds and the PNRC growing to four. Notably, the PNRC will include a first-ever interisland rally in Lubang, Occidental Mindoro, alongside rounds in Nueva Ecija and Cavite.

Organizers Olson Camacho and Ronnie Trinidad aim to broaden rally racing’s reach, attracting new participants through driver training programs focusing on rally driving fundamentals. These initiatives, supported by the AAP, emphasize safety and structured learning. “Rally driving, unlike circuit racing, involves navigating diverse terrains like gravel, mud, and tarmac, making it a true test of skill. I believe it’s safe to say talent development is unmatched in this discipline,” Camacho stated. The PHRX and PNRC, now in their 10th year, seek to revive the sport’s golden era from the 1970s and 1980s.

PINOY PRIDE ON FULL DISPLAY IN ROME’S GRANDEST MARATHON

THE 30th edition of the Acea Run Rome Marathon, Italy’s largest and most prestigious marathon, transformed the Eternal City into a vibrant celebration of endurance, unity, and cultural pride.

Among the thousands who took to the historic streets, hundreds of Filipino runners stood out, leaving an indelible mark on this worldrenowned event.

Held annually in the heart of Rome, the marathon attracts athletes from across the globe. This year, Filipino runners not only participated in numbers but also turned heads with their spirited performances and community presence.

The race began at the iconic Fori Imperiali, with Rome’s Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Councilor for Major Events, Sports, Tourism, and Fashion, Alessandro Onorato, waving the Italian ag to signal the start.

A moving tribute followed: 42 seconds of silence—one for every kilometer of the race—was observed in solidarity with Pope Francis, a known supporter of sports and marathons, underscoring the intersection of faith and athleticism.

MAKING THEIR MARK

Among the Filipino contingent, Lorenzo Castro Jr. delivered a remarkable performance, finishing 18th out of 28,000 runners with a time of 2:31:13. Battling rain-slicked cobblestones and tough weather, Castro’s resilience highlighted the determination and grit of Filipino athletes.

Close behind was Pantaleon Domingo, who clocked an impressive 2:42:00. Re ecting on his experience, he shared: “Nung una po mahirap sa dami ng participants but sa 20Km nakita ko maluwag na ng konti at nakabawi sa oras. Back to training again at baka makabalik next year.” His words captured both the challenges and the relentless spirit of competition.

Also making waves was Rachel de Weerd, a 51-year-old Filipina who

crossed the nish line at 3:28:54. For De Weerd, running through Rome was a dream fulfilled and ideal preparation for her next challenge: the Boston Marathon. At the event, she was honored with the title “Best Female Runner 2024” by the Rome Filipino International Pacers ESPINA, GARCIA & SANTA TERESA.

For many, this marathon was more than a test of endurance—it was a deeply personal journey. One

CULTURAL PILGRIMAGE

Filipino runners began arriving in Rome as early as March 11, not just to run but to immerse themselves in the city’s rich history and spiritual significance. The local Filipino community warmly welcomed them, with Philippine Ambassador H.E. Nathaniel Imperial o ering words of encouragement during a courtesy call. Ambassador Imperial also highlighted the presence of other Filipino sporting icons, including pole vault star EJ Obiena and racing prodigy Pia

also leadership, resilience, and a passion for inspiring others.

BEYOND THE RACE

For many participants, the marathon was a life-changing experience. Some ran to test their limits, others to inspire, and a few, like Liza Elep, for a cause. A cancer survivor, Elep dedicated her run to the Fondazione AIRC per la Ricerca sul Cancro, a cancer research foundation close to her heart. “By crossing that nish line, I feel I have made history,” she shared her journey symbolizing triumph beyond the physical.

Adding a festive air, the Pinoy Teens Salinlahi cheered on runners at the 29-kilometer mark, performing Filipino folklore dances and songs. Their presence highlighted the deep connection between culture, community, and sport, turning the marathon into a celebration of Filipino heritage.

KAYAKING is making a highly anticipated comeback at the Sarangani Bay Festival 2025, set for May 24 and 25 at Mt. Sabrina Beach Resort in Glan, Sarangani.

“Kayaking is one of the new sports that will be added this year,” shared Adeline Melleza, Executive Assistant to Governor Ruel Pacquiao. While it’s being introduced as a new feature for this year’s festival, kayaking actually traces its roots back to the

very first Sarangani Bay Festival held in 2006, originally organized by then-Governor Miguel Rene Dominguez.

A thrilling water sport, kayaking involves navigating through water in a small vessel using a doublebladed paddle. It has proven to be a crowd favorite in past editions, drawing enthusiastic participation from kayakers hailing from Davao City and General Santos City. Thousands of spectators have enjoyed the excitement and energy that this sport brings to

Kipsang (2:07:58) and Joshua Kogo (2:08:01), completing a Kenyan sweep. Italy’s top finisher, Daniele Meucci, placed eighth at 2:12:44. In the women’s division, Betty Chepkwony of Kenya took first place in 2:26:16, with Selam Fente Gebre of Ethiopia (2:28:22) and Rebecca Kangogo of Kenya (2:31:16) rounding out the podium. Italy’s best female performer, Burcin Ayse Sonmez, secured eighth place with a time of 2:45:38.

The Acea Run Rome Marathon 2025 was more than a race—it was a celebration of strength, perseverance, and unity. As one runner beautifully put it, “It’s not just about running 42 kilometers. It teaches you patience, resilience, and that the greatest victories don’t come easy—but that’s what makes them worth it.”

PETS

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR DOG'S BOWLS?

AS A pet owner, you want to ensure your dog’s health and well-being in every way possible. From feeding them nutritious food to providing them with plenty of fresh water, there are numerous ways to care for your dog. One often overlooked aspect of pet care is the cleaning and maintenance of your dog’s food and water bowls. While it may seem like a small task, washing your dog’s bowls properly is important in preventing health problems.

Why Washing Your Dog’s Bowls is Important

Many pet owners do not realize how easily bacteria, mold, and other harmful germs can build up on food and water bowls.

“When left unwashed, these contaminants can lead to a number of health issues for your dog. For example, dirty bowls can cause foodborne illnesses, gastrointestinal problems, and even skin condi-

tions,” said Hailey Gilbert in “How to Clean Your Dog’s Bowl” published in the Paw Pal website.

According to Gilbert, cleaning your dog’s bowl has lots of benefits including:

1. Preventing Bacterial Growth: Dogs often leave bits of food and saliva in their bowls, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria like E. coli, salmonella, and other pathogens can multiply quickly in moist environments.

2. Avoiding Mold and Mildew: Over time, if food and water are allowed to sit in bowls for long periods, mold and mildew can develop, especially if the bowls are kept in a humid environment. Mold spores can lead to respiratory issues or allergic reactions in dogs.

3. Preventing Bad Odors: Leftover food and stagnant water can develop unpleasant odors that may discourage your dog from eating or drinking. Clean bowls not only ensure your dog’s health but also keep their feeding area more pleasant for both you and your pet.

4. Maintaining Hygiene: Just like your own eating utensils, your dog’s bowls need to be kept clean to maintain overall hygiene. Clean bowls make it more likely that your dog will enjoy their food and water, and they can help prevent any cross-contamination from other sources.

How to Wash Your Dog’s Bowls Properly

Washing your dog’s bowls may seem straightforward, but it is important to do it thoroughly and with the right materials to ensure they are as clean as possible.

· Choose the Right Type of Bowl

Gilbert emphasized that in selecting the right kind of bowl for your dog is as important as buying the best dog food.

Dog bowls come in various materials, including plastic, stainless steel, ceramic, and silicone. Each material has its own cleaning requirements:

- Plastic Bowls: While plastic bowls are often inexpensive, they can develop scratches over time that trap bacteria. It is recommended to choose a BPA-free plastic bowl.

- Stainless Steel Bowls: Stainless steel is one of the best

materials for dog bowls because it is durable, and easy to clean. Stainless steel bowls are resistant to bacteria growth, making them a safe choice for your pet.

- Ceramic Bowls: Ceramic bowls are another popular option, but they can chip or crack easily, allowing bacteria to hide in the crevices. Always inspect your ceramic bowls for damage.

- Silicone Bowls: Silicone bowls are lightweight and foldable, making them great for travel. They are easy to clean, but it is still important to regularly sanitize them to prevent any buildup of germs.

· Rinse the Bowl Immediately After Use

The first step in cleaning your dog’s bowls is to rinse them immediately after use. This prevents food residue or water from drying onto the surface, making it harder to clean later. Simply rinse the bowl with warm water to remove any leftover food or liquid.

· Scrub the Bowl with Soap and Water

After rinsing, you should wash the bowl with hot, soapy water. Use a mild dish soap or pet-safe detergent, as some human soaps may contain chemicals that could harm your dog. Scrub all areas of the bowl, including the sides and bottom, using a brush, sponge, or dishcloth. Make sure to pay attention to any crevices, especially if the bowl has raised sections or a detailed design

· Disinfect When Necessary

While a regular wash with soap and water is usually enough, you should disinfect your dog’s bowls on a weekly basis, especially if they have been ex-

posed to raw meat or any other potentially harmful substances. You can disinfect with a mild, pet-safe solution like white vinegar diluted with water.

· Dry the Bowl Thoroughly After washing and disinfecting the bowl, dry it thoroughly with a clean towel or allow it to air dry. Bacteria thrive in moist environments, so it is important to make sure the bowl is completely dry before refilling it with food or water.

· Regularly Check for Wear and Tear

Regularly inspect your dog’s bowls for any signs of wear and tear, such as cracks or scratches, especially in plastic or ceramic bowls. If the bowl is damaged, replace it to ensure your dog’s safety and prevent bacteria buildup.

Alternative Cleaning Method:

An alternative way to clean your dog’s bowls is by soaking it in hot water and vinegar for a few minutes. Let it sit and wait for dirt and grimes to fall off. For stubborn dirt, scrubbing the bowls after is a must. This should be done daily.

ACID REFLUX IN PETS: A COMMON DIGESTIVE ISSUE

ACID reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is a common condition in pets, particularly dogs and cats. It occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus, causing irritation and discomfort.

Signs and Symptoms

As mentioned in the article, "Exploring Acid Reflux in Pets: Signs, Causes, and Remedies" (Food Guides), the most common symptoms of acid reflux in pets include:

· Vomiting: Pets with acid reflux may vomit, especially after eating.

· Regurgitation: Regurgitation is different from vomiting. It is a passive expulsion of undigested food, often with no force or effort.

· Hiccups: Frequent hiccups can be a sign of acid reflux.

· Loss of appetite: Pets with acid reflux may lose their appetite due to discomfort.

· Weight loss: If the pet is not eating properly, they may lose weight.

· Difficulty swallowing: Pets with acid reflux may have difficulty swallowing due to irritation in the esophagus.

· Excessive licking of the lips: This can be a sign of discomfort in the throat.

Causes of Acid Reflux in Pets

Acid reflux, a common issue in pets, can be caused by a variety of factors. As mentioned in the article, "Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) in Nonbrachycephalic Dogs" (VCAS Hospitals), several factors can contribute to acid reflux in pets, including:

Obesity: A Weighty Problem

Overweight pets are more likely to experience acid reflux due to the increased pressure on their stomachs. The extra weight puts a strain on the digestive system, making it easier for stomach acid to flow back up into the esophagus.

Hiatal Hernia: A Structural Issue

A hiatal hernia occurs when a portion of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm, the muscle separating the chest and abdomen. This can weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle that normally prevents acid from backing up into the esophagus.

Medication Side Effects:

A Potential Trigger

Some medications, such as nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can irritate the stomach and increase the risk of acid reflux. These medications can alter the stomach's natural defenses against acid, making it more likely to back up.

Breed Predisposition: An Anatomical Factor

Certain breeds, such as brachycephalic dogs (dogs with flat faces), are more prone to acid reflux due to anatomical differences. Their unique facial structure can contribute to a weakened lower esophageal sphincter, making them more susceptible to acid reflux.

Stress: A Psychological Factor

Stress can also play a role in acid reflux. When pets are stressed, their bodies release hormones that can affect digestion and make them more prone to acid reflux.

Food Sensitivities: A Dietary Issue

Some pets may be sensitive to certain ingredients in their food, which can trigger acid reflux. These sensitivities can cause inflammation in the digestive tract, making it easier for acid to back up.

Overeating: A Quantity Issue

Eating too much at once can put pressure on the stom-

ach and increase the risk of acid reflux. The stomach needs time to digest food properly, and overeating can overwhelm the digestive system.

Eating Too Quickly: A Speed Issue

Eating too quickly can also lead to acid reflux. When pets eat too quickly, they may swallow air, which can put pressure on the stomach and make it easier for acid to back up.

Understanding the causes of acid reflux in pets is crucial for effective management and prevention. By addressing these factors, pet owners can help their furry companions avoid the discomfort and complications associated with this common condition.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis of acid reflux in pets typically involves a physical examination, a review of the pet's medical history, and possibly diagnostic tests such as:

· Radiographs (X-rays): These can help identify any anatomical abnormalities, such as a hiatal hernia.

· Endoscopy: This procedure allows a veterinarian to visualize the esophagus and stomach using a small, flexible camera.

· Esophageal pH monitoring: This test measures the acidity of the esophagus over time.

Treatment for acid reflux in pets typically focuses on managing symptoms and addressing the underlying cause. As mentioned in the article, "Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)" (PetMD), some common treatment options include:

· Dietary changes: A veterinarian may recommend a diet that is low in fat and high in fiber.

· Medication: Antacids, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), and H2 receptor blockers can help reduce stomach acid production.

· Weight loss: If the pet is overweight, weight loss can help reduce pressure on the stomach.

· Lifestyle changes: Feeding smaller, more frequent meals, avoiding overfeeding, and elevating the pet's food bowls can help prevent acid reflux.

Complications

If left untreated, acid reflux can lead to complications such as:

· Esophagitis: Inflammation of the esophagus.

· Ulcers: Sores in the esophagus.

· Strictures: Narrowing of the esophagus.

· Barrett's esophagus: A precancerous condition in which the lining of the esophagus changes.

Prognosis

The prognosis for pets with acid reflux is generally good, especially if the condition is diagnosed and treated early. However, some pets may require longterm management.

Prevention

While not all cases of acid reflux can be prevented, there are some steps that pet owners can take to reduce the risk:

· Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity is a major risk factor for acid reflux.

· Feed a balanced diet: Choose a high-quality food that is appropriate for your pet's age and breed.

· Feed smaller, more frequent meals: This can help prevent overfilling the stomach.

· Avoid overfeeding: Don't give your pet too much food at once.

· Elevate the pet's food bowls: This can help prevent acid reflux by keeping food from backing up into the esophagus.

· Reduce stress: Stress can contribute to acid reflux. If you notice any of the signs or symptoms of acid reflux in your pet, it is important to consult with a veterinarian. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and improve your pet's quality of life.

TAG 4120: WHERE ART MEETS CULINARY EXCELLENCE

WHAT happens when you mix extraordinary local art and food? A big blast, that’s what.

Nestled amid the cool and picturesque landscape of Tagaytay, TAG 4120 is more than just a restaurant—it is a creative sanctuary where culinary artistry and visual expression come together. Originally envisioned as an art gallery, it has evolved into a destination that offers a unique dining experience while celebrating local artistry.

“We initially planned to open an art gallery,” shared founder Philip Abadicio. “My background is in PR, and I’ve been deeply involved in the Manila art scene for decades so when I moved to Tagaytay, I wanted to continue working with artists, but my partners envisioned a café. So we merged both ideas.”

What started as a modest café serving coffee, desserts, and sandwiches has grown into a culinary haven that Abadicio calls “Country Club cuisine.”

Housed in a charming green-and-white American-style structure reminiscent of Camp John Hay, the restaurant boasts a garden-view patio where diners can enjoy fresh air and the occasional sight of cows, chickens, or horses.

AUBREY CARAAN, LANCE CARR FIND LOVE IN THE ROUGH

LOVE stories built on the idea of “opposites attract” have long been a staple in romantic fiction, and Avenues of the Diamond , the fourth installment of the hit University Series , is no exception. But do its lead stars believe in the idea?

During the upcoming series’ recent press conference, Manila Standard Entertainment posed the question to the series’ main leads, Aubrey Caraan and Lance Carr who portray Sam and Clyden, respectively. Their love story begins with an arranged marriage, forcing them to navigate their clashing personalities and unexpected feelings.

“I do believe in opposites attracting. At the end of the day, as long as both people know how to work through their differences and share the same main goal in the relationship, then yes, opposites can make it work,” Lance answered.

Aubrey, however, had a different take.

“I’m not sure. For me, it’s easier to be with someone who shares the same interests, the same values. It just makes the connection more natural,” she said.

Their contrasting perspectives mirror their characters’ journey in Avenues of the Diamond the story, Clyden is a smart but distant character, whereas Sam is a vibrant and sociable person. Their contrasting personalities lead to tension, yet they also enhance the emotional richness of their narrative. In addition to the romantic aspect, the actors discussed their chemistry as a newly formed romantic duo.

Lance, stepping into his first lead role, emphasized the importance of making his costar feel at ease.

“Since this is her first time working in a love team, I’ve been doing my best to make her comfortable. There are a lot of emotional scenes, and I just want to make sure she feels safe and supported,” Lance shared.

For Aubrey, the experience has been a lesson in vulnerability.

ANTHONY JENNINGS TO STAR IN FIRST INTERNATIONAL FILM ‘MOTHER

“I used to keep my feelings to myself because I didn’t want to burden anyone. But through this project, I’ve learned that my emotions are valid. It’s okay to share and express them,” she explained.

Avenues of the Diamond focuses on romance but also explores themes of ambition, friendship, and self-discovery. Director Gino Cruz emphasized the significance of remaining faithful to the original material while enhancing the story’s depth.

“This installment tackles a lot of personal struggles. Sam’s character, for example, isn’t just about love— she’s also figuring out what she really wants in life. And I think that resonates with a lot of young people today,” the filmmaker said. Avenues of the Diamond is set to stream on Viva One on April 11.

FILIPINO actor Anthony Jennings is set to headline his first international film, Mother Maybe, a horrorcomedy-drama directed by Sonny Calvento

The film was announced as part of the Southeast Asian slate at the 2025 Hong Kong FilMart, as reported Variety and confirmed by Jennings’ home network, ABS-CBN. Mother Maybe is a co-production between Southern Lantern Studios (Philippines), E&W Films (Singapore), and Volos Films Ltd. (Taiwan). It also carries the working title Inahing Baka Jennings will portray Marco, a young man who travels abroad to reunite with his estranged mother—only to uncover a terrifying truth: she transforms into a monstrous creature at night.

Calvento, known for his Cinemalaya debut Nabubulok (The Decaying), said Jennings was chosen for the role due to his natural charm, comedic timing, and emotional depth. Production is expected to begin in the last quarter of 2025. Jennings rose to fame through his roles in ABS-CBN series 2 Good 2 Be True and Can’t Buy Me Love. He currently stars in the action-drama Incognito, playing Tomas Guerrero. With Mother Maybe, Jennings joins a growing list of Filipino talents making waves internationally, following in the footsteps of artists like Dolly de Leon and Chai

FOR veteran director Mike Sandejas, he described his upcoming film Sinagtala as not just another musical, but a youth-driven, emotionally charged drama that he believes has all the makings of a box office success. At first glance, the film’s title may mislead audiences into expecting a historical epic. But Sinagtala is actually the name of a fictional band at the heart of the story, composed of established actors— Glaiza De Castro , Rhian Ramos , Arci Muñoz Rayver Cruz , and Matt Lozano —that Sandejas says could draw in legions of young fans.

“These kids are really popular. Just their combined followers alone— how many millions is that,” said Sandejas during the film’s press

conference.

While the film centers on a band, Sandejas clarified that Sinagtala isn’t a traditional musical filled with staged performances. Instead, it’s a grounded narrative about life, ambition, and personal struggles—told through the lens of the band’s journey and the music they create.

“They play music, yes, but it’s really a drama. It talks about life. It’s very relatable. There are twists and turns that I hope people will talk about after watching it,” he continued.

The film marks Sandejas’ most commercial work to date—a deliberate shift aimed at reaching from the world of independent films to a broader, mainstream audience. Known for his earlier independent features such as Dinig Sana Kita, which also explored youth and music, Sinagtala blends

As of writing, no release date has

that emotional core with a more accessible format.

“I decided to be very commercial for a general audience. I think we have all the elements of a good film—an all-star cast, an excellent musical soundtrack, and a relevant, engaging story,” added Sandejas. Sandejas even made a bold claim about the film’s original music.

“I dare say, we have one of the best musical soundtracks in Philippine cinema,” the filmmaker stated. He knows that making an impact at the box office requires a strong opening, and he’s banking on the film’s mix of youthful energy, emotional resonance, and standout music to bring audiences in.

“As long as we get enough people to go in on the first day, I think we’re not that far off. Just watch the film—and you’ll see why,” said Sandejas.

GEN Z TO BECOME BIGGEST, RICHEST GENERATION BY 2035

GEN Z is expected to become the world’s largest and wealthiest generation by 2035, according to a recent report by Bank of America. The youngest working-age group is projected to earn $74 trillion in income by 2040, driven by wage growth and a massive intergenerational wealth transfer.

The report said Gen Z, currently navigating economic challenges such as high rent and student debt, had an estimated income of $9 trillion two years ago. That figure is expected to rise to $36 trillion by 2030 before more than doubling over the next decade.

Bank of America said Gen Z’s income growth will outpace other generations as they inherit a portion of the $84 trillion expected to pass down from baby boomers and older generations by 2045. Despite being overeducated and underemployed, the report noted that Gen Z saw an 8 percent increase in wage growth in February as more members enter the full-time workforce. Still, the group faces a tough labor market, with youth unemployment up 32 percent year over year.

Many Gen Z workers have delayed major life milestones such as home ownership and starting families due to rising costs, choosing instead to prioritize spending on rent, education, and lifestyle. Global spending by Gen Z is forecast to grow from $2.7 trillion this year to $12.6 trillion by 2030.

Businesses are expected to adjust to Gen Z’s spending habits, with sectors such as e-commerce, luxury, wellness, and pet care among those likely to benefit. The generation’s interest in fintech, gaming, and digital platforms is also expected to influence future market trends.

“It’s likely they will be among the most disruptive generations to economies, markets, and social systems,” the report said.

INTERIOR design students from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) renovated a section of the Philippine Naval Reserve Center in Manila, transforming the living quarters into a functional and comfortable space aimed at supporting the well-being of service members.

The student-led project, named Daong, converted a 22-squaremeter barracks into a modern shelter that incorporates elements of the Philippine Navy’s history and heritage. A 15-square-meter hand-painted mural and a blue camouflage accent wall, symbolizing resilience, highlight the renovation. Modular furniture, including bunk beds for six to eight personnel, personal storage cabinets, and a pantry area were installed. Students emphasized space efficiency and lighting to define designated zones within the quarters.
