Gift shop champions locals PORT Albert’s Southern Exposure has a delightful range of gifts and homewares, with most of its brands sourced from Gippsland creators.

Painting history: Port Albert artist Warren Curry has been busy painting for a new exhibition, which will feature around 30 works depicting the early days of the town.

History wri en in exhibition PORT Albert artist Warren Curry will be staging an exhibition, Port Albert – the Gateway to Gippsland – as part of the town’s 175th anniversary in February. The exhibition, featuring around 30 oil paintings, will open on Friday, February 12 at 6pm and run through until Sunday, February 21. The paintings, most completed in the last 12 months, focus on the history of Port Albert and surrounding areas.

Mr Curry said he will also be producing a brochure to run alongside the exhibition, to help explain the paintings and the stories behind them. “I have tried to do my research, so the history is as correct as it can be. There are no real visual accounts of Port Albert’s history, so I have had to use my artistic licence a little bit,” he said. “I love the history; it was such a populated area in the 1800s. Nearly three quarters of Gippsland’s population was within four miles of Port Albert in 1851.” Mr Curry said he hoped

people would enjoy the exhibition. “It is a great way for people to relate to the history visually and hopefully it encourages more and more people to appreciate the beginnings of the region,” he said. “I am also hoping that on a couple of days during the exhibition, I can give interested people a guided tour to explain the stories in person.” Some of the history captured in the paintings includes the story of harbourmaster Davy Fermaner, who built the Ship Inn, which in

1856 was Gippsland’s biggest hotel. Because Mr Fermaner was a government employee, he was not allowed to run the hotel as well. He decided to offer the role to a seaman. As part of the deal, Mr Fermaner offered the seaman a decent wage as well as a wife. She was a short lady, with bright red hair, one eye, few teeth and was wide as she was tall. Needless to say, the seaman declined Mr Fermaner’s offer.

Shop locally: Alexis Curry from Southern Exposure in Port Albert said her shop features a range of gifts and homewares to suit every taste.

Alexis said her range is always changing and expanding. “I am still looking for any local producers of unique things who are interested in selling their items through Southern Exposure,” she said. “I am particularly interested in finding some local makers of textiles, ceramics and preserves, however anything local would be wonderful. “I am trying to keep my suppliers as local as I can. I have just unpacked a whole lot of new stock, including new brands I haven’t had before.” The shop is open throughout summer on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. It will be closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Originally, I had a lot from Melbourne, but I am looking at sourcing more and more from local

businesses,” she said. “I am really just trying to stock unique gift ideas, something a bit different.” Alexis said she was keen to open a shop to display her photography and driftwood art. After spending time in Melbourne, she decided it was time to move back to Port Albert to make her dream a reality. “I wanted to move back to the country so I came back to Port Albert to open a shop to sell things that I love,” she said. “It was originally going to be a gallery space, but it evolved into a shop. For people who want to go fishing, there is no shortage of boats to hop aboard, or there is a boat ramp with plenty of parking for those who wish to bring their own. Visitors and locals are urged to make use of Rutter Park, right on the water and offers barbecue facilities and a fantastic playground. The monthly Make it, Bake it, Grow it and collectables market is held on the fourth Sunday of the month (excluding December, January – Australia Day, Easter and October) at the Port Albert Hall from 9am to 1pm. The markets feature craft, plants, produce, gourmet delights, childrens’ toys and much more. The town has plenty of accommodation, including a caravan park, bed and breakfasts and the hotel. Follow Discover Port Albert on Facebook to keep up to date with what is happening in this vibrant seaside village.

Celebrate at the club THE Yarram Country Club will be putting on free New Year’s Eve entertainment this year, with Melbourne duo Heartbeat performing in the bistro.

The cover band will play a variety of songs from the ’60s to the ’90s to bring in the new year in style. The night will also feature a buffet style dinner at a cost of $20 per person. There is no obligation to purchase a meal to enjoy the show. Christmas will also be party time at the Yarram Country Club, with the annual seafood spins on Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24. There will be 10 crayfish and 20 seafood packs up for grabs on the night, with tickets just $2 each, so come along for some festive fun.

Join the fun: Yarram Country Club manager Rod Coughran-Lane said there is plenty to see and do at the club this Christmas and new year.

Yarram is the gateway to fun THE town of Yarram is well worth a visit and is the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat or a coffee, or a longer stay to explore the whole area. In the heart of Tarra Territory, Yarram is the perfect home base for an exploration of what the region has to offer. From Yarram, visit the glittering Ninety Mile Beach, the magnificent Tarra Bulga National Park, historical Port Albert or the natural wonder of Wilsons Promontory. The town of Yarram itself also offers plenty for visitors to see and do. Sport lovers will enjoy the 18 hole golf course, a hit of tennis on the local courts or a refreshing swim in the outdoor pool. The Regent Theatre is worth a visit with movies being screened again, and Yarram’s great shopping will have even the most seasoned shopper excited. The old courthouse, now an information centre and gallery, is open every day except Wednesday. Art is always on display, and regular exhibitions feature throughout the year. Entry is free. A wide range of accommodation is available in the town, including hotels, caravan parks and bed and

breakfasts. Fishing is a great holiday activity and the Yarram area provides some of the best places along the coast to drop in a line. The Yarram Memorial Gardens, located at the southern end of the town’s commercial centre and next to the Yarram Country Club, feature water attractions, a playground and barbecue facilities. There is also a delightful mosaic mural that is sure to intrigue children and adults alike. The Tarra Bulga Nation-

al Park is well known for its giant mountain ash trees, beautiful fern gullies and ancient myrtle beeches. The park presents some of the best examples of the original cool temperate rainforest of the Strzelecki Ranges. Walk to Corrigan’s Suspension Bridge, which stretches through the rainforest canopy, providing spectacular views of the lush forest floor below. Another delightful romp is the Tarra Trail, which follows part of the historic Great Southern Railway between Yarram and Alberton.

Great day out: Stony Creek Racing Club provides summer entertainment, starting with the Boxing Day meeting this Saturday.

Race to Stony Creek this summer Nice drop: the impressive Agnes Falls situated near Toora is a tourist attraction visitors cannot afford to miss.

Admire the falls

NESTLED in the hills above Toora and Welshpool is a natural wonder known as Agnes Falls, the highest single span falls in Victoria at 59 metres high.

The Agnes Falls Scenic Reserve is a pleasant drive and can be reached from the South Gippsland Highway at Toora by following Silcocks Hill Road, Hazel Park Road and Agnes Falls Road. The reserve can also be

reached from Welshpool via Slade Hill Road and Hazel Park Road. These roads offer magnificent views across Corner Inlet to the peaks of Wilsons Promontory. After heavy rain the river spectacularly cascades into the gorge. Upstream from the falls, the Agnes River forms part of the Toora Water Supply Catchment which is why swimming is prohibited. The reserve has recently benefitted from the installation of a new toilet block, shelter and picnic tables. A short 200 metre walking

track leads from the car park at the reserve to a viewing area. Along the way, take the time to bird watch, or take a seat to rest and savour the view across the gorge. Agnes Falls Scenic Reserve offers a sample of remnant forests that once covered the Strzelecki Ranges and are home to many birds. At night possums and owls emerge from tree hollows to feed and on occasion, visitors may see a swamp wallaby disappear into the bush.

STONY Creek Racing Club is the capital of racing, carnival fashion and punting on the south coast. This summer racing season is set to be one of the best yet, with three meetings sure to get punters out on the track. Families and friends can gather together to shake off their food comas at the Boxing Day meeting. “The Boxing Day meeting promises to be a fantastic day for the community to catch up after Christmas,” club business manager Sarah Wolf said. The first race kicks off at 1.26pm to commence an afternoon of fun filled activities to keep the entire family entertained. “It is an affordable afternoon and parents can rest assured knowing their children will be entertained with an afternoon filled with activities,” Ms Wolf said. That is where the fun begins, with a full program of events sure to keep racegoers at the gates. The Ladies Day race meeting on Tuesday, January 5 also promises to be a day to make the most of the warmer weather, with socialising, good food and bright fashions on the cards.

“We will be hosting a pink rose’s marquee where women can enjoy a social afternoon of gourmet food, fashions and racing,” Ms Wolf said. Brent Sinclair Catering will provide an array of delicious foods while Judy Travers of Waratah Hills Vineyard while provide the wine and an insight to her career as the keynote speaker for the day. Later in the season, Stony Creek Racing Club will host a Publicans Day, with local establishments Fish Creek Hotel, Meeniyan Hotel and Riverview Hotel from Tarwin Lower already on board. A fee of $25 will provide admission and finger food to guests for the afternoon on Tuesday, February 9. Sunday, March 13 also promises to be a big one featuring Stony Creek Cup Day, with the Fashions on the Field for the Labour Day long weekend. Stony Creek Racing Club boasts fantastic facilities at a convenient location, only five minutes drive from Meeniyan. For shuttle bus information, contact Ross Wise on 0407 343 451 to plan for your next trip to the races. Enjoy a cider or beer at the bar trackside, put on a fascinator and become part of the action this summer at Stony Creek Racing Club.

Enjoy the sights at Foster THE South Gippsland area offers magnificent views from the southern slopes of the Strzelecki Ranges from great lookouts, many of them in the Foster region. Lookouts at Foster North, Mount Best, Mount Fatigue, Mount Nicoll and Silcocks Hill at Toora offer excellent views over the entire South Gippsland area, including Wilsons Promontory and Corner Inlet as well as the rich South Gippsland farmland. Foster is originally a gold mining town settled in the 1870s, and is now a popular resting point and shopping centre for visitors. Foster provides a great base for easy access to the surrounding towns and attractions, including Wilsons Promontory, Corner Inlet, Shallow Inlet, Sandy Point, Waratah Bay, Agnes Falls and Port Welshpool.

There are several walks around Foster, including Hayes Walk which takes visitors past the site of the town’s largest gold mine, Victory Mine. The town’s history can be investigated further with a visit to the Foster and District Historical Society Museum, located on Main Street. The museum is open daily from 11am to 4pm and is ready to offer more knowledge about Foster’s gold, forestry, dairying and social history. Foster is also an easy access point of the Great Southern Rail Trail. Walk, cycle or horse ride down the meandering gravel pathway through farmland towards Port Welshpool, or through the hills towards Fish Creek. Once called Stockyard Creek, Foster is home to the Stockyard Gallery, a community based gallery showcasing the best of Gippsland artists. The gallery is open daily from 10am to 4pm.

Worth the trip: interstate visitors to Foster are common, as its beauty and natural wonder are well known. Sydneysiders Veronica Shaw, left and Samiya Tabassum were checking out the town’s information centre recently, to help them discover more about the region.

Mountain View a racts the best

MOUNTAIN View Leongatha offers a unique opportunity for those aged 55 and upwards away to get the best out of life. The village offers an outstanding lifestyle with master built villas, open space design and remote controlled lock-up garages.

In addition it boasts beautifully landscaped gardens, security and support, including a 24 hour emergency call service. Les and Ruth Smith are looking forward to moving onto their new villa in January and watch its progress every day. They love the ambience of the village and all of the facilities.

The fact it is relatively small was also a factor in their choosing to make Mountain View their home. “If people want to get in they will have to move quickly,” Mrs Smith said. The Smiths’ caravan is securely parked on site and during the winter months they plan to head north to the warmth. “And while we’re away

we have the comfort of knowing our place is secure,” Mrs Smith said. Most recently the Smiths have moved back to Leongatha from retirement in Merimbula, prior to which they had a hobby farm in Meeniyan. Mrs Smith worked as a nurse and her husband was a bank manager. “We love the quality of Mountain View and the village feel it has. Everything is very nicely done,” Mrs Smith said. One of the features of

the village, which attracted residents initially and allowed the village to grow as quickly as it has, was the way it began with the community centre. That provided the village with a focus from the very beginning. The community centre includes a salt chlorinated heated indoor pool, kitchen, dining and lounge areas, library, games room for billiards and table tennis, and a craft room. Other facilities include an outdoor barbecue area, bowl-

ing green, secure caravan and boat storage and community vegetable garden. As he surveyed the village, Brad Carter, the owner of Mountain View, said, “The grass and the gardens are looking fantastic. Mountain View is something unique you will never see again. It is a boutique village of the highest quality; secluded and exclusive. All of the residents of the village are really happy to be here.” The village has attracted people from far and wide,

from places such as Castlemaine, Bendigo and the Mornington Peninsula, to take up residence. It will reach its maximum size of 45 villas in 12 months’ time. At present there are 25 residents occupying 15 villas, with 17 available. Villas are available in two and three bedrooms with a single or double garage. Mountain View is also pet friendly and allows pets to be replaced if they happen to go.

Tourist News Unwind at iconic market THE Koonwarra Farmers’ Market never fails to attract a healthy crowd to the lovely treed reserve, 15 years after the first market was held. The market attracts regular locals as well as tourists staying at coastal towns and other popular weekend getaway spots. Sit with and enjoy good coffee and cake in the shade listening to live music, stock up on artisan bread, locally grown saffron, Thorpdale potatoes, seedlings and wine to take home. There are exquisite meats and other regional treats to sample, plus amazingly fresh produce. The next market is in Memorial Park, Koonwarra, on Saturday, January 2, 2016. Markets are held on the first Saturday of every month.

Jewellery that is one of a kind JEWELLERY is personal and that is why craftsman jeweller Denis Hawkins of Koonwarra is the man to see. With more than 50 years’ experience, Denis makes exquisite handmade jewellery that cannot be found anywhere else, meaning every piece he creates is one of a kind. “It’s about quality and I have some amazing one off pieces that you can’t buy retail,” he said. “I have people coming from all over.” Denis only sells high quality gems and diamonds that are all sold with a

certificate of authenticity. He has his own special gem cutter and polisher of international acclaim. Most gems are cut specifically to clients’ specifications which make them rare in themselves. Denis is also a master craftsman in the setting of diamonds and other precious gems including grain setting, channel, bezel setting, gypsy, flush and hammer setting. “If you treat people well and give them a good deal, they are happy. It’s about looking after your clients which is what I have always done,” he said. Denis now operates from his Koon-

Alterations, and adjustments where possible, can be made and all work is guaranteed with a manufacturer’s valuation given. Denis also enjoys the relaxation of carving wood and stone. “Creating and design is my life and I enjoy every moment of it,” he said. New beginnings at continent’s end WILSONS Promontory is either Victoria’s hidden gem or its best kept secret.

Left, Canvassing possibilities: The Prom is a favourite with people of all ages and the perfect place for a family holiday. There are few better places in the world to pitch a tent.

World beating: Squeaky Beach is a relatively easy walk over the headland from Tidal River but is also accessible by walking a short distance from a car park. Picnic Bay and Whisky Bay beaches are just as accessible but the numerous other beaches will require you to exert more effort, and in cases planning, to reach.

Driving to The Prom, as it is affectionately known, there are glimpses of what is to come from the distance, atop the hills as the motorist approaches Foster, and from inside the park itself as Tidal River nears. But these are only glimpses of what to expect and there is only one way to explore The Prom and that is on foot. This is after all a national park, a pristine wilderness of great natural beauty. What’s more, The Prom is a place of such remarkable diversity that its beauty can only be revealed over time. Walk north from Tidal River over the headland to an extraordinary surf beach with golden sand that squeaks beneath your feet. You are reminded with each step of the unspoilt nature of Squeaky Beach, as it is known. Walk south from Tidal River and around the headland to the south to a beach of even greater beauty, the white sand of Little Oberon Bay, glittering beneath the towering granite of Mount Oberon. At the far southern end of the promontory, on a granite

rock cathedral rising like a steeple from the isthmus which connects it to the mainland, is the lighthouse standing sentinel at the southernmost tip of the Australian mainland. The place feels a little like Wales, with whitewashed cottages along a cobbled lane, at the end of which the lighthouse proclaims its importance. Some of the park’s icons have vehicular access - Lilly Pilly Gully, Whisky Bay, Squeaky Beach, Tidal River and Mount Oberon. Others, such as the lighthouse and the east coast with its evocatively named Sealers Cove, Refuge Cove and Waterloo Bay, reward only effort and not wheels. Tidal River has rainbow lorikeets so friendly they eat out of your hand, and wonderful scenery along the river and out onto Norman Bay. Mount Oberon has that magnificent view but nothing beats the feeling of exertion and arriving, limb tired and in a state of almost nirvana, at places of isolation and beauty as Sealers Cove. George Bass named Sealers Cove in 1798 and sealing was

soon underway. Historian Patrick Morgan calls the men who descended on the coves of Wilsons Promontory and the islands of Bass Strait “a motley group of vagabond freebooters” who lived a rough, Robinson Crusoe-like existence. They wore kangaroo and seal skins and survived on local wildlife and by growing a few vegetables and on basic supplies dropped from passing ships. Occasionally the sealers were joined by convicts escaping from Van Diemens Land. It is not hard to find yourself and your walking party in quiet places far removed from the rest of the world. National parks can be places as perfectly suited to active pursuits as to contemplation and it can be easy to conjure up the past in your mind. The place is a treasure, one as precious as a multi-faceted diamond; each visit yields something new, whether that is a miniature orchid, a hidden glade filled with maidenhair fern, or a panorama of a sweep of beach slowly revealed as you round a headland.

TARWIN/VENUS BAY Destination: relaxation by the sea NOTHING heralds the start of a summer holiday like crossing the bridge over the Tarwin River when driving into Tarwin Lower.

Quality guaranteed: Tracey Robertson, with children Marshall and Abraham, with a produce box they offer holidaymakers and locals from their Tarwin Lower fruit and vegetable store, Fresh As.

The tranquil river, the sight of an angler wetting a line or a kayaker enjoying a gentle paddle, immediately soothes the soul. Such is the charm of this district, known as the place of a river and beaches. Tarwin Lower and its sister town Venus Bay offer the perfect mix of natural attractions and everyday conveniences that epitomise the idyllic one stop holiday spot. Boaties can launch in the Tarwin River at Tarwin Lower and head either upstream for a spot of fishing or downstream for water skiing or explore the fishing spots of the lower reaches and inlet. People wishing to motor around the inlet further west can launch at Venus Bay and find many secluded spots to drop a line near the islands or

among sandbanks. These waterways are also worth discovering from the serenity of a kayak. Venus Bay offers five surf beaches to choose from, with access roads dotted through the residential estates, but take note: beach one is the only beach patrolled by surf life savers and swimming between the flags is the safest option. The other beaches are known to be dangerous and without help at hand, one’s holiday could end in disaster. When cooler weather renders beaches unappealing, pull on your walking shoes or cycling shorts. The Tarwin Lower–Venus Bay trail offers an easy ride or walk between the two towns, along the banks of the Tarwin River. The trip is five kilometres one way. Even if the day turns windy, outdoor people can rug up and hike the Point Smythe Walk, a sheltered trip through coastal vegetation. Allow two hours to undertake the six kilometre circuit or more time to complete the branch trail to the tip of the point. The trailhead is at the end of Lees Road, in the third estate. The coast offers further surprises towards Walkerville. If you have a four wheel drive, turn up Five Mile Track off the Walkerville Road and drive for several kilometres to the beach. Set up for the night at a private camping spot at the start of the beach walk to Arch Rock, a little known natural attraction that is one of South Gippsland’s jewels. Bear Gully camping ground near Walkerville South is a popular free camping site right on the water’s edge. The Cape Liptrap lighthouse is worth visiting to admire the coastal vistas to the east and west. For fresh produce while holidaying in the area, be sure to contact Fresh As at 3/47 River Drive, Tarwin Lower, run by Alistair and Tracey Robertson and their children, Charlie, Marshall and Abraham. A range of seasonal produce is

available in-store, with many of the goods coming from a relative’s property at Boisdale. Fruit and vegie boxes are available from $30. Deliveries to Sandy Point, Walkerville, Tarwin Lower and Venus Bay are available for $5. To book, phone Mrs Robertson on 0402 995 063. The store also sells Hope Farm bread, pre-packaged coffee and tea from Feedrealgood at Sale, olive oil from Olive Twist at Jumbunna, and honey soap and cosmetics. “We are trying to be as local as possible, while at the same time trying to provide all produce in season,” Tracey said. Fiona and Neil Williams are the new owners of the Venus Bay General Store and Cafe. They offer visitors everything they need for their holiday, from gas, groceries, liquor and milk, to papers, fruit, vegetables and great coffee. Toys and preserves from Boo’s

Kitchen are also offered by the friendly team. The store is open seven days a week from 7am until late, and the Williamses love the community. “All our customers have been terrific. The holidaymakers come here to chill out, and come in for their coffees and focaccias or something for lunch,” Fiona said. “We have a large following of coffee drinkers here. A lot of people come in for their egg and bacon rolls.” To ensure your holiday is extra relaxing, be sure to visit Ocean Echoes in Venus Bay. Kym Dollan offers Lomi Lomi massage - a relaxing, wholistic healing massage - as well as Reiki, hot stones massage and readings. Enjoy a one hour massage in beautiful relaxing beach surroundings. After five treatments, you get one free. Guests will be so relaxed, they will not feel like returning home.

Sunshine and Shadows captures summer in art THERE’S beauty in the hills at this time of year and it’s the ideal time to visit Di and John Koenders’ latest exhibition, entitled Sunshine and Shadows, at their studio/ gallery in Arawata. The art show opens on Friday, January 1 and runs until Tuesday, January 26, 2016, including all public holidays. The gallery is open daily from 11am to 5pm. The gallery is fully airconditioned and guests are offered tea, coffee or wine. Di and John have been artists for more than 40 years and have illustrious careers. Eight years ago, the revelation that John is the great grand nephew of Vincent van Gogh was discovered, adding provenance and value to their beautiful artworks.

John and Di are realist artists, so their painting style is different to their famous ancestor. They were honoured to have the documentary, Vincent – the untold story of our Uncle, shown in Cannes, France. DVDs are now available at Mayfield Gallery. The walls are adorned with superb paintings. Glowing oils of graceful old gumtrees along meandering riverbanks, scenes of yesteryear with handsome Clydesdales ploughing in the fields and coastal scenes of the local area. As well as local landscapes, John also has quite a variety of European scenes in his collection. John’s watercolours are also inspiring – old farmhouses with chooks in the backyard, dry creek beds flanked by towering gums and others.

Di’s passion is wildlife, and she shows this in her lifelike depictions of birds and animals, from tiny blue wrens and barn owls, to wild geese and majestic wedgetailed eagles. By dealing direct with the artists there is the additional benefit of saving on costly commissions charged by private galleries. If you have a farm, business or home office or an ABN, the painting can be claimed on your tax return. Di and John are happy to accept commissions. If you have a scene, a farm, or a beloved pet or person you wish to preserve on canvas, these subjects can become artworks that will be family heirlooms. The Koenders guarantee all their works and make certain you are happy with the result. They can work from life or photographs and will discuss fully with you what

Swap meet to lure thousands THE biggest and longest running one day event in South Gippsland is returning to the summer calendar.

Passionate about hobby: Leon Watchorn and his prized 1935 Ford Coupe exemplify the dedication car enthusiasts show in restoring vehicles. He will be among the South Gippsland Historical Automobile Club members to attend the club’s 33rd swap meet at the Korumburra Showgrounds on Sunday, January 10.

The South Gippsland Historical Automobile Club’s 33rd swap meet will be held at the Korumburra Showgrounds on Sunday, January 10 from 6am until mid afternoon. More than 4000 people attended the 2015 event, perusing vintage or special cars, parts, stationary engines, farm machinery and anything mechanical, plus antiques, toys, books and more. Stallholders and shoppers come from across the region,

Victoria and interstate because they know the event is something special, said the car club’s Gerard Bruning. “We are the first swap meet on the swap meet calendar, we attract the holidaymakers and what we are hearing from the stallholders and the buying public is that it’s a great social event,” he said. “The meet has a great variety of old and new stuff, and it has those hard to find items.” For an entry fee of just $5 a head, the swap meet makes for good value entertainment. Early bird shoppers arrive at 6am to find special items and love being able to see what they are buying, as opposed to buying online.

“From the smallest items and the biggest items, there is something of interest for everyone,” Mr Bruning said. Proceeds from swap meets over the years have helped fund the transformation of the club’s rooms at the Leongatha Recreation Reserve that now serve as a social hub for the club and the community. “Not only does the event benefit the whole area on the day and the day before, you can also see how it has benefited the area with what we have done with our clubrooms,” Mr Bruning said. “A lot of money has been spent there and it’s a public facility.” The club now has more

members to help run the event, among them Leon Watchorn. His 1935 Ford Coupe is a tribute to the vehicle’s original designer, having been restored to superb condition. His friend Reg Fisher rebuilt the car’s body over a few years, spending many hours returning the vehicle back to shape by cutting and shrinking the body. “His great skills in this work, along with the painting and colour choice, make it look as it does today,” Mr Watchorn said. With the help of other car club members and tradespeople, Mr Watchorn completed the restoration after 23 years of dedication.

INVERLOCH History to sail at Inverloch SOUTH COAST

Tourist News

HISTORY will be relived at Inverloch on the Australia Day long weekend, when the South Gippsland Yacht Club presents the Inverloch Classic Wooden Dinghy Regatta. The third annual event will be based in and around the Inverloch foreshore from January 23-26, and is expected to attract thou-

sands of visitors. The yacht club’s Andrew Chapman is expecting the regatta to again attract interest from across the region and interstate. Boats came from as far as Bendigo and Sydney, New South Wales, last year. “For the last event we had 33 boats and we’re hoping to get to 40 for this event. If we get to 50 we will be pretty thrilled about it,” he said.

Creative talent: Inverloch artist Marion Chapman with one of eight posters she has created for the 2016 Inverloch Classic Wooden Dinghy Regatta.

On Saturday, January 23, the yacht club will host an invitational race followed by an evening barbecue with club members and visitors. Another invitational race will be held on Sunday, January 24. Monday, January 25 will feature a display of classic wooden boats on the beach near the yacht club in the morning, followed by a wooden boat race in the afternoon. The regatta dinner will be held on the Monday evening at the Inverloch Bowling Club, where awards will be presented. On Tuesday, Australia Day, the public is welcome to appreciate another display of boats in The Glade foreshore area from 10am1pm, in conjunction with a display of Indian motorcycles. The Lions club award for best boat in the regatta will be presented, as well as the Rotary award for best youth wooden boat sailor. “Both Lions and Rotary have been great supporters of the regatta over the last two years, as well as the Inverloch Historical Society,” Mr Chapman said. A highlight yet again will be the Moth dinghies, a class developed by Len Morris at Inverloch in 1927 with the creation of the Inverloch Eleven Footer, so named because of its length. The class had few re-

The same year, motorcycle racer Burt Munro raced his Indian motorcycle at Inverloch and with that link, the regatta will also feature the display of Indian motorcycles. Indian motorcycles once raced on Inverloch’s beach and then later at Venus Bay. “We are getting a lot of the children involved because they are our future sailors,” Mr Chapman said. “Before the first regatta, a lot of the children did not think these boats existed. The classic wooden din-

ghies were the dominant boat people used to sail from the 1920s through to the 1970s. “Fibreglass boats then came in and that gave thrust to simplify the classes, and mass production of boats was a factor.” Mr Chapman said the regatta is a celebration of the “history of how Australians lived on the coast”. “A greater percentage of the population used to sail back in the ’50s and ’60s than sail now,” he said. “We have discovered that when we’ve had normal boats parked on the beach, people are not interested but when you have one of the classic wooden

boats there, you get parents coming up with their children and taking photos. It’s the story of Australians using the beach. “By having it on the Australia Day weekend, it has that other aspect of ensuring our culture is not lost. A lot of these boats were made in people’s garages by families.” The regatta is one of very few festivals celebrating wooden racing boats in Australia, and is expected to host Moths, Herons, Jolly Boats, 16 Foot Skiffs, Mirrors, Skates, VJs, Fireballs, McGregor Canoes and Ian Oughtred Shearwaters, among others. “That is just some of

them but the regatta is open to all classic wooden boats,” Mr Chapman said. Regatta secretary Rob McNair added, “We are hoping to make it a recognised Inverloch event so people come to the town for it.” Up to 40 sponsors supported the 2015 regatta and many are expected to back the 2016 event too. Mr Chapman’s wife Marion Chapman is creating a series of eight commemorative posters for the regatta, recognising the role of sailing in Inverloch’s history and culture, and also acknowledging the involvement of Indian motorcycles this year.

Coastal gem sparkles in many ways FEW places in Victoria offer a stunning surf beach and a spectacular sand lined inlet in the one package like Inverloch. The town’s long surf beach presents a relaxing summer location for swimming, surfing and beachcombing, and the main surf beach is patrolled by life savers. The beach is one of the safest in South Gippsland, yet guarantees surfers and body boarders reliable waves for summer action. Around the corner, the Anderson Inlet shoreline is constantly changing and is a wonderful place to walk, inspect rock pools, fish, swim and kayak. The beach near the angling club is a popular launching point for kayakers, windsurfers and kiteboarders keen to explore the

tranquil inlet waters. Often on Sundays, members of the South Gippsland Yacht Club take to the water to race, making for an amazing spectacle. In town, Inverloch offers a plethora of restaurants, cafes and hotels, as well as places to enjoy ice cream, clothes shopping and browsing. On cooler summer days, walk around the shops or for the more energetic holidaymakers, consider the numerous walks around town. There is a path along the foreshore from the angling club in the east to Ayr Creek in the west, and this is an ideal destination for walking for leisure or fitness, cycling, or taking time out with one’s family. A longer walk to the top of Townsend Bluff, via the bridge over Screw Creek, will reward

walkers with grand views across Anderson Inlet and peaceful bushland. The walk starts at the car park at the far eastern end of the foreshore camping ground. Simply drive through the boom gated entry and past the campers, and find serenity. The trail spans three kilometres return and takes about one and a half hours to enjoy. The Ayr Creek walk starts at the Ayr Creek bridge at the start of Surf Parade and winds along the tree lined creek and throughout peaceful residential areas of town. Allow about one and a half hours to cover the three kilometre return trip. The Thompson Estate Nature Reserve offers a short loop through bushland, accessible from behind the Inverloch Tennis Club in Pier Road. See original woodland and low lying swamp paperbark thickets that once covered the land where Inverloch now stands. The marked nature trail will take about 30 minutes to walk. These trails are ideal ways for exploring undiscovered parts of Inverloch and for escaping the holiday crowds. For those who love to stop and admire the scenery, the beautiful natural structure Eagles Nest is located along the stunning Bunurong Coastal Drive between Inverloch and Cape Paterson. You can also visit Twin Reefs, Shack Bay, The Caves and Flat Rocks along the 12 kilometre road and take in the calm, picturesque environment. There are isolated beaches to enjoy and the prospect of seeing a dinosaur fossil or footprint in the rock shelves.

Quality guaranteed: Shane Hemming of Inverloch Marine invites boaters to inspect the high quality range of Extreme boats.

Aquatic fun is calling SUMMER is the season for fun on the water and the team at Inverloch Marine is ready to help you do just that. The reputable dealership sells the outstanding range of Yamaha waverunners, plus boats by Extreme and Noosa Cat. There is also a range of used boats ideal for estuary or offshore adventures. The 2016 range of Yamaha waverunners is available now and features the world’s first dual throttle handlebar control system known as RiDE. Simply pull the right lever to accelerate and the left lever to decelerate and for reverse. Pull them in any combination and the system reacts with precise control. RiDE delivers no nose dive, increased stability and improved turning ability. Operation is simple with no manual shifting, no gears and no complicated processes. Riders will enjoy improved handling and smooth deceleration in changing conditions. Select models feature electric trim, further allowing the driver to customise their ride. “Most people will be able to

get on one and be competent within around 15 minutes. With models to suit the novice through to the experienced rider, everyone is covered,” said Inverloch Marine’s Shane Hemming. “Yamaha has earned their reputation based on their reliability over many, many years.” All Extreme and Noosa Cat boats sold are powered with Yamaha outboards, and if you are considering updating the engine on your current boat for the upcoming season, Yamaha has an extensive range to cater for all types of applications. “Extreme boats have been the most awarded aluminum boat in New Zealand over the last eight years,” Mr Hemming said. “For people looking for a boat built to the utmost quality and workmanship, they are well worth considering.” Throughout the industry, Extreme Boats are renowned for their stability produced by their broad water line beam, and their dry riding performance delivered from there large down turned chine. Customers looking to purchase are offered on water tests to experience what Extreme Boats has to offer. Extreme Boats range in length from five to 11 metres, so there are

models suitable for fishing in rivers, estuaries and offshore. “We list all new and used stock on our website, and as this is an ever changing range, keep a close eye on it for something that might be appealing,” Mr Hemming said. “We also offer finance, insurance and warranties for used stock and that gives peace of mind to those who purchase a used item through the dealership.” Inverloch Marine stocks boating accessories such as lifejackets, flares and other safety equipment. Inverloch Marine proprietor Tim Edney has been running the business since 1991, building the dealership from its former base at a small service station to the dependable business it is today. The dealership features a modern workshop with factory trained service technicians ready to service your boat. “With the upcoming season sand safety in mind, we suggest your outboard and boat is in good working order before venturing onto the water,” Mr Hemming said. AROUND THE DISTRICT

Painted Wings takes flight EMILY Koenders’ hilltop paradise, the Emily Koenders Art Gallery at 230 Ruby-Fairbank Road, at Fairbank via Leongatha is staging a magnificent art exhibition, Painted Wings.

Shining a light: Emily Koenders with one of her heavenly depictions of birds on display at her Fairbank gallery.

A visit to this hilltop paradise and Painted Wings between January 2 and 31, open daily 11am-5pm will guarantee you an amazing experience. You will enjoy an extensive collection of the artist’s latest wildlife artworks whilst admiring the outstanding panoramic vista to Wilsons Promontory stretching out before you. Delight in the beautiful gardens as you meander along the maple avenue leading to the newly created French parterre garden with its magnificent fountain and extensive hedging. Recent exhibitions at the newly built art gallery and studio have left visitors overwhelmed; exquisite wildlife paintings are surrounded by breathtaking architecture. The gallery’s setting is such a paradise to inspire an artist as many of the varieties of birds she paints reside in her own garden, from scarlet robins, to blue wrens, red browed finches, kookaburras and king parrots, not to mention the majestic raptors such as peregrine falcons, nankeen kestrels and wedge- tailed eagles circling overhead. Emily’s art career commenced at only 14 years of age when she decided her life’s calling was to be an artist, claiming she was “born on a palette”. Amazingly, many years later, a discovery was made which connected her to the famous Dutch master, Vincent van Gogh: Emily is his great, great, great, great niece. Knowing she is related to the brilliant painter has inspired her to work with even greater passion and depth.

Emily’s artworks are an achievement from over 20 years of study. Her most recent paintings have been executed with such intricacy, giving sympathy to every detail that resides in nature. “Nature is perfection, and to capture that magic, even to give those who view my work a glimpse at it, is what I wish to achieve,” she said. Her artworks are executed in gouache and watercolour, both mediums she believes are the most effective for capturing the detail in her realistic depictions of nature. Emily’s travels have taken her to studying art in the great galleries across Europe and she has had amazing wildlife encounters around the world which have included feeding a Sumatran tiger a bottle of milk, giraffes and playing with cheetahs. Emily’s awards have been won at the Victor Harbour, South Australia, Leongatha, Korumburra, Bayswater, Bellarine Peninsula, and Chirnside Park art shows. Her work is highly sought after in both private and corporate collections here and overseas, and many noted clients are proud to call her work theirs. Emily also paints commissions so special requests of your own can be immortalised in a beautiful painting, an heirloom for your family, for many generations to enjoy. The Emily Koenders Art Gallery is located on the Ruby-Fairbank Road and can be approached from the South Gippsland Highway at the large brown tourist signs (Ruby turn off). Alternatively, take the Wild Dog Valley Road (past Murray Goulburn towards Fairbank and Leongatha North) then left into Fairbank Road and left again at Ruby – Fairbank Road. The gallery is the second property on the left. For enquiries or to phone for directions, please contact the Emily Koenders Art Gallery on 0421 339 575.

Rail trail showcases region ONE of the best ways to take in the glories of South Gippsland’s nature is by taking a walk or bike ride along the Great Southern Rail Trail. The trail stretches 68 kilometres, starting at Leongatha and spanning all the way to Welshpool. Guests can wander the trail between towns on foot, bike or horse back, and dogs are more than welcome on leashes. The trail is an excellent way to take in the local wildlife, with koalas and kangaroos often out and about in the bush. Leongatha to Koonwarra is an easy eight kilometre walk with few slopes and

lush countryside. Visitors can stop to relax at either end of the trail, with cafes and shops a stone’s throw from the trail. The section of trail between Koonwarra and Minns Road is currently under construction for visitors and locals to meander through in the future. Minns Road to Meeniyan crosses the Tarwin River where visitors can appreciate a wide array of both native wildlife and tranquil surrounds. Guests can cross the trestle bridge near Meeniyan where the trail cuts through the recreation reserve. The reserve is fully equipped with a new playground, public toilets, camp sites and skate park, proving the perfect stop over for hiking families. Meeniyan to Toora also highlights

some of South Gippsland’s greatest scenery, with views of rolling hills and some of South Gippsland’s hidden gems. Taking in the best of Stony Creek, Buffalo and Fish Creek, the trail takes in the foothills of the Hoddle Ranges. The section of trail connecting Toora to Welshpool opened in February 2015. Guests can explore the new part of trail in its first summer this season, as the trail reaches its point closest to the coast. For a day of exercise or a challenge for the whole family, The Great Southern Rail Trail offers an abundance of nature’s beauty and South Gippsland’s greatest landscapes. Life changing it certainly was for the founders of Organature Peter and Maureen Byl who established a niche business. They have been successfully selling 100 per cent certified organic cotton bedding and linen since 2004 from the former Buffalo General Store and the new boutique store in San Remo that opened in March this year. The business was born out of necessity after Peter was diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity in 1993. Testing showed the predominant cause of his illness to be in his family workplace where he and Maureen worked manufacturing, wholesaling and retailing bed linen, bedding and curtains. Basically there is no cure for this condition and the only recognised remedy is ‘avoidance of chemicals’. The hard decision was forced on them to close the business and over the years the Byls have made massive changes to their lifestyle and their home environment that resulted in vast improvements to Peter’s health. The journey to better health and experience in manufacturing took the family on a new career path, producing their exclusive range of organic cotton bedroom, bathroom and nursery products

Waratah Hills wines will be adored Divine wine meets fine food

LOCATED on the doorstep of the world famous Wilsons Promontory National Park, Waratah Hills Vineyard has become a must visit cellar door for locals and visitors alike.

Waratah Hills was planted 20 years ago with the classic cool climate varieties of pinot noir and chardonnay. In the past four years Waratah Hills wines have featured prominently at the Gippsland Wine Show, receiving gold medals for the signature pinot noir range. Owners Judy and Neil Travers, with the help of their Melbourne based daughter Megan, have created a cellar door that has become known for its great hospitality and first class produce, as well as award winning wines. It is not only the Waratah Hills wines that have people talking. The

ly specials that have cemented Waratah Hills’ reputation as one of South Gippsland’s best lunch destinations. Tastings, wine by the glass, wine sales and a shop featuring produce, as well as an exciting new range of design and lifestyle products, are all part of the Waratah Hills cellar door experience. The vineyard is set on 30 acres, with the cellar door positioned to make the most of the far-reaching views. The outdoor picnic area is an ideal haven for visitors who love to sit back on the signature Adirondack chairs with a glass of wine to admire the view. This summer the cellar door is hosting an art exhibition of works by artist Linda Gibbs with a collection of large scale oil paintings that reflect the essence of Wilsons Promontory. The cellar door is open daily from December 27 through to the end of January, between 11am and 4pm.

To call the setting beautiful is something of an understatement; it is quite simply glorious in that verdant way, unique to South Gippsland. Djinta djinta produces winese more than worthy of this setting and deserve the accolades wine lovers heap upon them. The annual degustation dinner to mark the release of the new vintages was held on November 7. Chef Steven Webber designed a sixcourse meal, each matched with one of the new releases. This glorious vineyard produces cool climate grapes that are transformed into superb wines. The vineyard was established in 1987 and the vines have since grown vigorously due to the cool climate conditions, high rainfall and the fertile grey loam soils. Djinta djinta practices a traditional approach, with each vine individually tended to by hand. Varieties grown are cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, cabernet franc, sauvignon blanc, marsanne, roussanne, chardonnay, viognier and riesling. New vintages available, both at the cellar door or in the restaurant include the sauvignon blanc, marsanne roussane voignier, cabernet sauvignon malbec, a fresh young pinot and Ruby Creek plus older varietals. The 2015 Marsanne Roussane Voignier is a unique semi dry white. Winery owner Eleonor Biro said, “It is drinking beautifully right now but this wine is unlike most white varietals in that it will reward a good few years’ cellaring.” Both new and old world methods of wine-

making are used in the winery in order to allow maximum fruit expression and complexity. Fruit is handpicked and graded using only grapes displaying maximum flavour and good acidity balance to create a boutique, hand crafted wine. The djinta djinta winery also offers a house-made locally sourced fine food range of condiments, preserves, pickles, relishes and breads, all of which can be found within the seasonal menu in the deVine restaurant and cellar door platters. The cellar bar tasting room The Wines of Armour Room has a medieval theme where you can gather around the solid red gum topped bar to taste the fantastic range of wines that are reasonably priced. The Wines of Armour Room and the deVine Restaurant are open Wednesday to Sunday from 11am until 4pm and other times by appointment. Every Sunday lunch during January is a Sauvy Sunday when you can enjoy two free glasses of 2015 Sauvignon Blanc with any antipasto or surf and turf platter purchased. Friday, February 12, starting at 6.30pm is the popular South Gippy Tasters, when $5 covers wine, cheese, other local produce and live music. Another great event to remember is Sunday, March 20 which is Music @ the Vines, from 12pm through until 7pm there is free entry to a family friendly live music event in a marquee setting with ample seating and delicious food available all day. New Year’s Eve is not too far away either, and limited space for the a la carte dinner is still available at deVine Restaurant, on the balcony overlooking the vineyard or indoors, with a complimentary glass of djinta djinta bubbles. If you haven’t already done so by now, the warmer months are the perfect time to slow down and take a drive to djinta djinta winery. It is a hidden gem, but just off the highway and waiting to reveal its graces to you.

COFFEE HOT SPOTS

Retro cafe up with modern trends THE Tiny Teapot is the first cafe on the highway in Korumburra motorists encounter after leaving Melbourne, and boy, what a cafe!

With an introduction to Gippsland like this special little cafe, first timers would be full of anticipation for what more lies down the road. But, this little cafe would be unique wherever it was located.

After 14 months as joint owners of this thriving business, Maria Arestia and Cherie Pritchett have developed a reputation as having the best coffee in town, some say the area. If this cafe was in North Fitz-

Showing the wares: from left, Cherie Pritchett and Maria Arestia’s South Gippsland establishment, The Tiny Teapot in Korumburra, is a standout. The cafe is a special place to call into and will have you coming back time and time again.

roy, it would be hipster central. Maria said it is going well. “We are getting busier and busier and now with the school holidays upon us and tourists on their way to Wilson Promontory and the beaches, we are really gearing up,” she said. The interior of the cafe is a bright and cheerful 1960 retro fit, with chrome and laminate tables

The lot: Russell and Josie Buchanan from Bena find The Tiny Teapot cafe the perfect place to be regulars. It has the lot: great food, coffee and service.

Josie said, “The cafe has a great ambience, excellent food and coffee and friendly staff.” Russell said, “Plus they’re both very good looking!” There are gifts and clothing available for purchase, discretely displayed, which can be best described as selective; they match the groovy feel of the cafe. There is nothing ordinary here and you’ll probably walk out with half of your Christmas shopping done and dusted, just like that. Wonderful handcrafted jewellery, oak framed sunglasses (yes, real oak and made in Australia), novelties, bunting, soft furnishings, aprons and bespoke clothing make this more than a place to stop, and enjoy good food and coffee. The room has outstanding acoustics and that has made Kick Back Sundays a popular event at the Tiny Teapot Cafe, with local musicians adding even more to the special vibe. The cafe is open seven days a week from 6am on weekdays and 8am on weekends. It closes midafternoon between 2pm and 3pm. Maria and Cherie have also gained a reputation for their catering skills so whatever the occasions, call them on 5655 2605 or better still, call in for a chat.

Ready to serve: the team at Stockdale and Leggo Inverloch works hard to make visitors’ holidays memorable. From left, property manager Jacinda Studham, director Adam Leys, property manager Amanda Tonkin, director Glenn Bolam and property manager Naomi Bechaz. Absent: sales consultant Greg Synan.

Holiday bookings made easy

THE relaxed sensation of being on holidays typically kicks in when one opens the door to their accommodation and falls into bed. However when visitors book their coastal getaway through Stockdale and Leggo Inverloch, the feeling of relaxation begins as soon as they make their booking. Stockdale and Leggo ensures making holiday arrangements is enjoyable and hassle free. The Inverloch branch manages a selection of quality holiday homes perfect for guests of all tastes and needs, said director Adam Leys. “The number of properties we have on offer is growing and we have better quality properties to offer,” he said. “We have beach shacks through to three level mansions with stunning views over the inlet, with prices ranging from $1000 a week to $4500 a week at the top level.” Stockdale and Leggo Inverloch offers a reliable service to holiday accommodation landlords too. Full service includes cleaning, gardening, linen and equipment hire, or landlords may wish to manage their own cleaning, particularly if they live locally. Inverloch’s appeal as a holiday destination has been discovered over the years and word is spreading of its charm. “We have a lot of new businesses that have opened around town that allow Inverloch to compete with the Mornington Peninsula and the west coast for visitors,” Mr Leys said. “The quality boutiques, cafes, restaurants and pubs cater well to tourists, and the new Gusto Gelateria is an attraction.” The Christmas to New Year period is virtually booked out, but there is still availability for the later weeks in summer. The pleasant experience tourists and landlords receive from Stockdale and Leggo Inverloch continues when buying and selling real estate. “We sell as far as Venus

Bay, Walkerville and Kongwak, as well as within the immediate Inverloch township,” Mr Leys said. “We service the inland areas and the coast, so people who are listing their property know we can reach both markets.” Summer is a busy period for coastal real estate, with Stockdale and Leggo Inverloch receiving significant enquiries and inspections. “Our service is professional and communication is the key,” Mr Leys said. “We are largely dealing with a city based market, whether they are vendors or purchasers, so they have the expectation we provide the same level of service, if not better, than what the metropolitan agents do. “Buyers are much more educated than they have been in the past. They often have been monitoring the market for a year or two, and know what properties have sold for previously.” The agency has an amazing variety of properties for sale this summer, including a beautiful small acreage at Kongwak, with a house constructed from rammed earth, and an original 1900s weatherboard home at Outtrim. There is a luxurious three

level home with pool, spa, tennis court and 4000 bottle subterranean cellar in Inverloch and an affordable entry level beach house near the Inverloch surf beach. A large five bedroom home on a double block in Walkerville is available for under $300,000, representing exceptional value. An architect designed home in Venus Bay offers privacy as well as views across the inlet and wetlands. “There is something to suit every budget and brief, and stock levels are high so it is a great time to buy and enjoy the coastal lifestyle,” Mr Leys said. Permanent rentals are in high demand and supply is tight, so keep an eye on new properties hitting the market to ensure you do not miss out. Stockdale and Leggo Inverloch has six full time staff covering sales, property management and holiday property management. To inspect the range of properties or book holiday accommodation, see Stockdale and Leggo Inverloch’s dedicated holiday booking website, www.inverlochaccommodation.com.au, phone 5674 3977 or visit the office at 2A A’Beckett Street, Inverloch.
