Love is not a Reason for Marriage – You DESERVE Better!

The best way (actually, the only way) to have a lasting relationship is to really look at the quality of the person you’re dating. That means being on the lookout for specific character traits, both positive and negative. The top four qualities to look for are humility, kindness, responsibility and happiness.
Humility What is humility? Well, it is not being a doormat. Letting people walk all over you is not a sign of humility. It’s a sign of weakness. Mosey on over to a bar nearest you and watch what happens. When a man approaches a woman in a bar or a woman approaches a man they each know exactly one thing about the other: how they look. She’s attracted to him, he’s attracted to her. And that physical chemistry forms the basis of whatever relationship may or may not develop. Now, one or both may think “I have just met the love of my life.” But in fact, they are simply infatuated with each other.
Here’s one to remember: Chemistry ignites the fire, but character keeps it burning. Chemistry and physical attraction are not to be ignored. But a deeply loving relationship based on 6

Humble people are not weak. Humble people want to do the right thing rather than their thing, and that takes a lot of confidence and inner strength. Someone who is humble will put values above convenience.
Does the person you’re dating do volunteer work? If not, do they give charity? If the answer to both questions is no, that isn't a good sign. to someone who has mastered all of the above qualities that go along with humility. Nobody’s perfect. But you should look for someone who values humility and is striving to achieve it. At the very least, ask yourself if the person you’re dating is arrogant. You definitely do not want to marry an arrogant person who feels that people owe him or her the world.
Kindness
A humble person will not get angry easily because they don’t feel that anybody owes them anything. That’s the reason they are often not materialistic.
Kindness is more than just being a nice person. If you ask most engaged couples if their intended spouse is kind, they’ll probably say yes. But the divorce rate is over 50 percent. If everybody is so kind, then why is the divorce rate so high? Because although people think that they’re kind, they really lack a depth of kindness.
Now, you may think that the above description applies only to angels. And it would be a mistake to narrow your search down
So, what is kindness? Being a kind person means being a giver, someone who’s committed to giving pleasure and minimizing

mutual respect cannot stand on chemistry alone. That can only happen with someone whose character you can value and appreciate.
Lifestyle What happens when they drink, when they lose control a little bit? How do they act? Take note of the answers to these questions. Write them down so that you’ll have a whole picture in front of you when you need to make a decision about whether or not to continue a relationship.
Responsibility other people's pain. If two people like this get married, they are much less likely to suffer serious problems in their relationship. That’s because each one is dedicated to the other’s well-being. How do you know if someone is truly a kind person? Look at how they treat the other people in their lives. How do they treat their parents, siblings and grandparents? Do they feel a sense of gratitude to their parents? If not, what makes you think they’ll feel any sort of gratitude towards you after you’re married?
Photo: canstockphoto/pressmaster
Watch how they treat the “little people” towards whom they have no obligations: waiters, busboys, doormen, secretaries. How do they treat their employees? What is their business reputation like? Are they ruthless?
First thing, ask yourself: Is this person irresponsible? If the answer is yes, be careful. It should go without saying – you do not want to marry an irresponsible person. If your first, off the cuff answer is no, then take the time to take a second look at them. Do they have a stable work history? Do they have stable friendships? Do they have longterm friendships, or do they tend to move around a lot? Ask yourself: Can you rely on this person? Do you feel safe and secure with them? Another good question is to ask yourself is, if you can trust what the other person says. Do they stand behind
what they say? As far as you know do they live up to their commitments?
Happiness Are they happy? You might be stumped on that one. Since when is happiness a character trait? That all depends on how you define happiness. A happy person is someone who is content, who focuses on what they have, not on what they don’t have. Life has no guarantees. Anyone can be dealt a hard blow. But a person who is internally happy will be able to get past life’s obstacles, whereas someone who is constantly focused on the negative will have a more difficult time. And you want to be married to someone who can smile at life. So remember: Never get married just because you’re in love – focus on character, not on chemistry. Look for a quality person to share your life with, someone humble, kind, responsible and happy. You deserve no less! SM

I Love You an you say “I love you too many times?” Well, if you don't really mean it of course you can. Or maybe it's the unimaginative ways it is expressed that compels many to stop using the words “I love you” altogether.
C
Love is not just an emotion or feeling. Love is something we must see in action, not just feel with our heart. In order to keep the word love from being common place we must keep it alive with the things we do for that special person in our life.
Too many times we think it is enough just to say “I love you” to our sweetheart. We are then off the hook to really work at keeping the relationship fresh and exciting. If you are clueless as what would put the “sparkle” back in your relationship, try a few of these ideas: Give your sweetheart a back

rub, gently telling them to relax and unwind from their day at work or with the kids, etc. While you are both comfy is a good time to tell them you love them and that they mean the world to you. When you take the time to give them your time and attention without expecting something in return, this makes the word ‘love’ more meaningful. Surprising your sweetheart with something romantic is a great way of showing how much you love and care for them. Consider: a soft burning, sweet smelling candle lighting a dark room with a delicious dinner for two on the table, and the soothing sound of music in the background. Try arranging a special day for the two of you to do something the other enjoys. Participate in that activity with them, even though it's not your favorite and give all your attention to your

loved one and cherish the day. The words “I love you” will come freely from both of you at the end of the day. Your sweetheart will see that you mean what you say by giving of yourself. If you enjoy writing or are creative you might try your hand at composing a short poem or ‘love’ letter or buy a beautiful card or small little gift. Place it somewhere that will surprise them, as in under their bed pillow or in the fridge! How about doing a few chores or work around the house before your sweetheart asks you to? Maybe even do something more than they would expect you to do. Before their very eyes it is done, without them nagging you. How much you love being with them couldn't be more apparent. When said at a time not expected, the simple words “I love you” can be the most exhilarating anyone can hear! SM

WHO SHOULD WEAR ORTHOTIC FOOTWEAR? Beyond those diagnosed with the need many of us can benefit from orthotics. Subtle issues can occur from walking, running or standing for prolonged periods of time. Minor injuries to the feet and ankles can become worse with time – often resulting in a feeling of discomfort or a spike of pain in the foot, leg, hip or back. Orthotics with appropriate footwear reduces the foot’s stress burden by adjusting its posture and providing accurate support to the arch. – Garry Hayes, Orthopaedic Technologist

Sleep deprivation can impact your immune cells and make it difficult for your body to identify and fight cold and flu bugs. It can also affect your diet by altering your “hunger hormones” and increasing your desire to indulge on sugary and salty foods. This can influence the careful nutrient balance needed for a healthy immune system. The percentage of adults who sleep less than six hours a night is currently greater than at any other time on record. If you’re having trouble falling or staying asleep, try cutting down on screen time before bed — including television, cellphone and computer use. This can help you sleep more soundly, as studies show that blue light emitted from devices confuses our biological clocks and sleep patterns. YOU CAN ALSO TRY THESE NATURAL HEALTH PRODUCTS:
Vitamin D Those with lower levels of vitamin D were found to sleep less. If you fall into this category, you might want to try vitamin D supplementation, especially during the colder months when the lack of sunshine makes getting enough of it extremely difficult.
No matter how hard you try, sometimes it can be difficult to get enough sleep with work deadlines and other worries on your mind. In fact, according to a survey conducted by the Canadian Health Food Association, 73 percent of Canadians say that a lack of sleep negatively affects their health. 18

How to Transition Your Wardrobe From Winter to Spring Refreshing your closet when the seasons change doesn’t have to be a painful, time-consuming process that involves buying lots of new pieces. Keep these five tips in mind while you embrace the warmer weather:
1.
Brighten things up with a statement spring coat. Since it’s not warm enough yet to venture outside without one, choose a coat that has a tailored fit and a bright colour to help you break out of your winter blues. Try the red DH HD1 willow trench coat from Mark’s, pairing it with dress pants for work and
jeans on weekends.
2.
Don’t put away all of your sweaters — yet. Keep a few out because you know a spring breeze will unexpectedly roll in, keeping temperatures chilly. Your sweaters can be used as layering pieces in the morning or with dresses.
3.
Try a cropped pant. Not quite a capri, a cropped pant gives you a spring look without the commitment. These versatile pants are also flattering on every body type. Depending on the weather, pair them with a sweater and booties or a short-sleeve blouse and flats.
4.
Keep your jeans. You may
feel like you wore your jeans all winter long, but don’t put them away. Jeans pair well with boots, t-shirts, light jackets and even sandals. Since denim is one of the most versatile fabrics in your wardrobe, you only need to refresh your jean collection with the same pair in a different colour or wash.
5.
Don’t ditch the ankle boot. Even though all winter you wore them with your favourite jeans, try pairing your ankle boots with skirts and dresses for a simple look that’s still polished. It’s an easy way to wear your warm weather clothes when the mornings are still chilly. – newscanada.com STATUS Magazine

Wellbeing In Search of
Contentment is the secret to happiness? It’s a question that everyone has asked themselves at least once - and the perfect marketing angle for companies attempting to peddle their easy answers. But the solution isn’t in a rejuvenating facial cream, a new outfit or smart gadget, or at the bottom of a fancy, imported beer. A recent study indicates that satisfaction with one’s relationships as well as having a sense of purpose are some of the factors associated with a greater sense of life satisfaction. The study conducted by Queendom.com and PsychTests.com focused on two distinct groups: Those who are satisfied with their life, and those who are not. Below is a look at how both groups scored.
What
Sense of Accomplishment SCORE FOR SATISFIED: 80 SCORE FOR UNSATISFIED: 27
Satisfied people take pride in their achievements, whether big or small. They are determined to leave behind a legacy, whether it’s in the form of a lucrative business, a social change they initiated, or by raising a happy family.
Sense of Belonging SCORE FOR SATISFIED: 75 SCORE FOR UNSATISFIED: 31
Making connections with others continues to be the most basic, yet one of the most important human needs. Happy people make it a point to expand their network, which in turn contributes to their sense of belonging and social support.
Sense of Purpose/Meaning Being stuck in an unproductive rut can be disconcerting and discouraging. Satisfied people regularly set goals for themselves, whether it’s championing a cause, volunteering or engaging in creative projects. A goal doesn’t have to be exceptionally challenging as long as it is personally meaningful. 22

Health really is true wealth, particularly when it comes to a person’s mental state. When faced with an issue that is affecting their happiness (e.g. depression, anxiety, grief, loss, etc.), satisfied people find ways to cope, whether it’s engaging in mindfulness practices or seeking the guidance of a therapist. To them, investing in their mental health is worth it.
While they do experience the occasional conflict, satisfied people are content with their relationships. They feel respected and supported by their family, and enjoy spending time with them.
Optimism SCORE FOR SATISFIED: 78 SCORE FOR UNSATISFIED: 30
Resilience SCORE FOR SATISFIED: 78 SCORE FOR UNSATISFIED: 38 Satisfied people possess a great deal of resilience and a fighting spirit. Obstacles and hardship rarely sidetrack them for long,
and they tend to bounce back quickly. This isn’t because their life is easy, however. They have a good set of coping skills and recognize that resilience and mental toughness can only be developed through hardship.
Sense of Pleasure SCORE FOR SATISFIED: 77 SCORE FOR UNSATISFIED: 44 Satisfied people make fun a priority in their life. They regularly set aside time to engage in activities that bring them joy – time that unsatisfied people may see as wasted and that could be better spent on more productive
In spite of the challenges they are going through, satisfied people always strive to find the silver lining. They focus on possibility rather than problems, and believe that there is a lesson to be learned in every experience. They have a hopeful and upbeat outlook.

Satisfied people will give problems in their life due consideration, but they refuse to dwell on worries or the negative. In contrast, people who are not happy with their life have a tendency to overthink issues and to keep their mind focused on the past. A Closer Look
“It’s important to understand that the relationship between these

factors and life satisfaction is circular,” explains Dr. Jerabek, president of PsychTests which is the parent company of Queendom. “Having an optimistic attitude and happy relationships can certainly contribute to a greater sense of contentment, but the case could also be made that people who are already content tend to have a more positive attitude and happier relationships. That being said, this study does make it clear that improving these areas of your life certainly couldn’t hurt. Having a goal or a purpose, for example, working on your mental health, or focusing on the blessings in your life rather than your grievances could go a long way to improving your outlook. Even developing happier relationships is within your power to change, because it depends a great deal on your behavior - how YOU commu-
nicate with others and approach conflict. In fact, many of the life satisfaction factors covered in our study are about focusing on and nurturing your inner self. “And here’s another interesting tidbit from our study: Of the 19 factors we assessed, money came in 18th, indicating that it has little impact on life satisfaction. Essentially, while having money can make your life easier, it will not make you happy – especially if your mental health and relationships are not up to par, and your life lacks a sense of meaning and purpose. Money really does not and will not buy you happiness.”

Natural Health Food Trends One of the most popular New Year's resolutions is to live a healthier lifestyle, which can include reevaluating the foods you eat. With this in mind, check out the top five natural health trends the Canadian Health Food Association says we'll be seeing this year.

1
Sprouting. Low in calories but high in digestible protein, vitamins and minerals, sprouts are great for adding to salads, soups and smoothies. By allowing the seeds to sprout, important nutrients naturally present are released, making it easier for our bodies to access and absorb them.
2
Plant-based dairy alternatives. Almond-, hemp-, soy- and coconut-based dairy alternatives have been around for years, but newcomers to the market include many other options made from flax seeds, hazelnuts and cashews. Low in calories with virtually no satu-

rated fat or cholesterol, these alternatives are naturally lactosefree and provide healthy doses of vitamins A, D and E.
Digestive enzymes. For those looking to give their digestion a boost, digestive enzymes can help by breaking down food into nutrients the body can use. They also reduce bloating and gas production associated with indigestion, and decrease the likelihood of ulcers caused by acid buildup. While digestive enzymes can be found naturally in fruits like papayas and pineapples, you may also want to consider supplementation.

4
Mushrooms. Mushroom extracts pack many health benefits and can be found in a variety of forms. Lion's Mane supplements, for example, have been shown to improve the protective covering of nerve cells from damage relating to cognitive decline. Meanwhile, reishi tea releases beneficial carbohydrates and fibres that increase the production of white blood cells to fight invading bugs. Smart carbs. Keep an eye out for smart carb options that promote more balanced energy levels, digestion and brain function. Options range from pasta made from lentils and legumes to low-fat bean chips and pea snacks. These healthier snacks will satisfy your crunchy craving without the risk of sugar spikes and crashes. Baklava An easy to make honey syrup poured over the hot nut-filled layers keeps this Greek pastry moist and delicious for days. It also freezes very well in an airtight container. It may look complicated, but there are no difficult techniques; the layering just takes time. PREPARATION 30 minutes BAKE 78 minutes COOK 20 minutes MAKES 36 pieces 4 cups (1 L) walnut halves (about 1 lb/500 g) 1/4 cup (50 mL) granulated sugar 1 tsp (5 mL) ground cinnamon 3/4 cup (175 mL) butter, melted 1/3 cup (75 mL) canola oil 1 pkg (454 g) frozen phyllo pastry, thawed SYRUP:
1 cup (250 mL) granulated sugar 1 cup (250 mL) water 1 cup (250 mL) Ontario honey 1/2 lemon (rind and flesh) 1 cinnamon stick (about 3-inches/ 8 cm) Place walnuts on rimmed baking sheet. Toast in 350°F (180°C) oven until fragrant, about 8 minutes. Let cool. Transfer to food processor and chop very finely. Place in medium bowl; add sugar and cinnamon and stir to combine; set aside.
In small bowl, stir butter with oil; brush some over 13- x 9-inch (3.5 L) cake pan. Unfold phyllo sheets. Cut entire stack in half crosswise and place between 2 sheets of waxed paper under a slightly damp tea towel to prevent drying out. Place 1 cut sheet on work surface, keeping remainder covered. Brush with some of the butter mixture. Repeat with second sheet and place them in pan. Sprinkle with 2 to 3 tbsp (25 to 45 mL) of nut mixture. The phyllo won’t completely fill the pan but continue to layer buttered sheets in a staggered fashion so they will be fairly even when all the sheets are layered. Continue buttering, layering and sprinkling with nuts. (Don’t worry if stack is slightly higher in
the middle.) With sharp knife, cut baklava all the way through into 3 long rows on short side and 6 rows on long side. Then cut each rectangle in half diagonally. Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven for 30 minutes. Reduce the heat to 300°F (150°C) and bake until top is crisp and golden brown, about 40 minutes. SYRUP Meanwhile, in small saucepan, bring sugar and water to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir in honey, lemon half and cinnamon stick. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Discard lemon and cinnamon stick; pour all over baked pastry. It will seem like too much syrup, but it will soak into pastry. Let cool on wire rack. -Foodland Ontario STATUS Magazine

La belle province. Pourvoirie du Lac Geneviève d’Anticosti tempts with stays in former lightkeeper houses (now four-star lodges) on Anticosti’s north coast. Jutting up 21 metres (70 ft), West Point Lighthouse Inn is Prince Edward Island’s tallest lightstation—noted for its square-tapered design and broad black stripes that served as “day marks.” Originally built in 1875, it was converted to an inn and museum during the ‘80s, offering beachy getaways near Cedar Dunes Provincial Park. Nova Scotia’s sole lighthouse hotel, Cape d’Or, overlooks the Bay of Fundy near the town of Advocate Harbour. Along with views atop a seascape manipulated by the world’s highest

For those who prefer freshwater to saltwater, Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior Inc. restored Porphyry Point Lightstation, east of Thunder Bay, ON, and opened it for overnight guests last summer. Access is by boat, floatplane or kayak; rooms are nestled within the lightkeeper’s home. The not-for-profit CLLS hopes to restore more stations along the Lighthouse Trail on Lake Superior and, for 2016, will host an artist in residence at Porphyry.
