New Study Reveals Values Of Aspiring Politicians

INSIDE the Mind of a Politician A new study by Queendom.com compared the value system of would-be politicians to people who do not have political interests. At least some of the people who decide to pursue a political career do so out of a desire to initiate change. They’ve faced or witnessed injustices that they want to end, or have grown tired of the ineptitude of their current representative or government. However, it goes without saying that a hunger for power and attention also plays a role. Researchers at Queendom and PsychTests analyzed data collecting from their Values Profile, focusing specifically on people who indicated that they are interested in pursuing a career in politics. Reasons Why We Like Swedish Bitters

Swedish Bitters (also known as Swedish Herbs) was formulated circa 1540 by Dr. Phillipus Paracelsus. The physcian developed the formula as a digestive aid. Today, its fans credit the formula with being useful against a broad range of illness. Though the ingredients of Dr. Paracelsus’ recipe are unsubstantiated, it is widely accepted that a recipe found in the 18th century is one in the same! Dr. Samst, was a medical rector who died in a riding acciddent at the age of 104. Found amongst his writings were a herb recipe formula and a document listing aliments and the formula’s corresponding usefulness. This document has become known as the ‘‘Old Manuscript.’’ In the1950s, Austrian herbalist Maria Treben obtained the coveted recipe. Through her book, ‘‘Health Through God’s Pharmacy,’’ she brought Swedish Bitters to the forefront of today’s world. Here from the from the Old Manuscript are suggested how tos for Swedish Bitters. Many of our volunteers and members send their feedback and general comments about BCA. As well, many survivors share their personal stories to let others know that a diagnosis is not a predecessor to an involuntary life of grief. Why not take a moment to read about their thoughts and experiences. ELIZABETH

I was in shock and in denial when I was diagnosed especially as my family does not have any history of cancer. In addition, I have always maintained an active lifestyle, nutritional diet; in short a perfect picture of health. I was also in denial about my need for support. BCA was a safe place for me to go and meet other women, especially the many survivors who gave me so much hope. I learned about BCA by happenstance. Within 2 days of being diagnosed with breast cancer, I discovered the Breast Cancer Action office. It was one of the most welcoming places I had ever walked into. It felt like a home away from home even though I did not know anyone there. I started going to the stretch and strength classes. I see these classes as a way to give back to those more recently diagnosed and /or still undergoing treatment. These programs are also inspirational in addition to helping me stay fit. BCA is the place to go for support and answers to the many questions most of us have about breast cancer. ”

In 1997, I was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. They found that eleven out of 15 of my lymph nodes were cancerous. Two years later, I learned about BCA while stopping at a sidewalk sale held at the Billings Bridge Plaza. While there, one of the volunteers recognized I had lymphedema and recommended I take the BCA Lymphedema workshop. When I discovered the level of support and number of programs BCA offered, I joined the organization and commenced volunteering with them immediately.

BCA has a library of information regarding breast cancer, peer support programs, and fitness programs where not only do you get exercise, but are in the company of people who have gone through and are going through what you are. In my family there are a significant number of family members who have cancer, both paternal and maternal (mother was a carrier of the BRCA gene. She had breast cancer. I was diagnosed, even though I tested negative for the gene. All my sisters tested positive for the gene. Presently, they are breast cancer free. After surgery, the gene testing was repeated, and this time showed positive, and they also discovered a mutant gene found in 1 out of 10,000 persons tested. At the present time I am considered a survivor, however I consider myself a thriver! If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer I recommend you get in touch with the BCA and sign up for the Pre-Op and Lymphedema workshops the information you receive will be invaluable! BCA provides vital support offered to breast cancer patients. ”

undergoing three mammograms and three ultrasounds. Yet, all the tests were conclusive to not having cancer. My instinct told me otherwise so I pressed and begged for a biopsy. It was discovered that I indeed had breast cancer and I had to put my life on hold for a year of hell. On my fifth anniversary of diagnosis, I discovered I was expecting a child. This was a pivotal point in my life I had a new focus and was no longer living in fear of the cancer but focused on rebuilding and claiming my life back. I had a second cancer in 2011, a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Through BCA, together with a registered nurse, I started speaking at local high schools about the importance of testing. I enjoyed and participated in the Busting Out Dragon Boat program. I continue with the BCA peer support program to this day. Most of my peer support is helping women make decisions on whether to have reconstructive and what type is best for them. ”

Food PREPARATION TIME 15 minutes Cooking Time 30 minutes Makes about 36 using wonton wrappers (or 20 eggroll wrappers)

This version uses egg roll or wonton wrappers and the samosas are baked rather than fried. Serve warm with mango or coriander chutney. Be sure to dice vegetables fairly small.

Spicy Vegetable SamoSaS 3 tbsp (45 mL) vegetable oil 1 Ontario Onion, finely diced 1 Ontario Carrot, finely diced 2 medium Ontario Yukon Gold Potatoes, about 12 oz (375 g), peeled and finely diced 2 tsp (10 mL) each of finely chopped gingerroot and curry powder 1 tsp (5 mL) salt 1/2 tsp (2 mL) ground cumin 1/4 tsp (1 mL) each cayenne and black pepper 1 cup (250 mL) water 1/2 cup (125 mL) frozen peas, thawed 2 tbsp (25 mL) chopped fresh Ontario Coriander Leaves 36 egg roll or wonton wrappers 28

Heat 2 tbsp (25 mL) of the oil in large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add onion, carrot, potatoes and ginger; stir-fry until softened, about 5 minutes. Combine curry powder, salt, cumin, cayenne and pepper; add to skillet, stirring well and cook for 30 seconds. Add water; cover and simmer, stirring occasionally for 10 to 12 minutes or until vegetables are almost tender. If water is not absorbed, uncover and cook until just about evaporated. Add peas and cook a few minutes. Remove from heat; stir in coriander. If using larger egg roll wrappers, cut in half diagonally to make 2. Place 2 to 3 tsp (10 to

15 mL) filling in centre of each wrapper (depending on size). Moisten edges of wrapper with water; fold in half to form triangle and press edges together to seal. Arrange on baking sheet and brush lightly with remaining 1 tbsp (15 mL) oil. Bake in 375째F (190째C) oven for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden and crisp. Tip: To make ahead cool and refrigerate in covered container up to 2 days ahead. Reheat on baking sheet in 350째F (160째C) oven about 5 minutes or until warm. Or microwave in single layer on paper towel on Medium (50%) until warm, not hot. -Foodland Ontario

About 90% of the world's mustard seeds are grown here in Canada, where the cool, temperate climate makes for ideal growing conditions. Mustard plants might just be the only living things that appreciate the Canadian winter — frost even enhances the flavour of the seeds. Having mustard every day might not keep the doctor away, but the yellow stuff does offer some health benefits, including having lower fat and sugar counts than other condiments such as mayo or ketchup, aiding in digestion and boosting metabolism by as much as 25%. Mustard seeds are also a source of fibre and protein, as well as a variety of beneficial nutrients including iron, magnesium, Omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, phosphorous and selenium. Before you head out to buy a jar of the good stuff, keep in mind that not all Dijons “cut the mustard.” The flavour of a classic Dijon is derived from a combination of brown mustard seeds, wine, garlic and onion. But like many regional wines — the most famous being, of course, Cham-

Spread in six 6 oz/175 mL heatproof ramekins or in medium casserole dish; chill. Meanwhile in medium bowl, beat yolks with sugar. Heat cream in apple saucepan until just before boiling, scraping down any apple mixture clinging to sides. Whisking constantly, pour gradually into yolk mixture. Return to saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 20 minutes. Do not let boil (set saucepan immediately in large bowl of cold water to prevent overcooking and curdling). Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Strain evenly onto chilled apple mixture and let cool (preferably overnight). At least 1 hour before serving and up to 1 day ahead, sprinkle custards with brown sugar. Broil for 1 to 2 minutes until sugar melts and colours. Chill until ready to serve. TIP: Use a propane torch in the final step instead of the broiler. Caramel apple Trifle Using store bought sponge or pound cake, caramel sundae syrup and custard means this dessert takes just minutes to assemble. Look for Ontario Empire, Golden Delicious, Spartan, Idared, Crispin or Cortland apples which all hold their shape when cooked.

In large nonstick skillet over medium heat, bring apple cider, sugar, butter, cinnamon and nutmeg to boil. Add apples. Reduce heat to medium, cover and cook until apples are tender, 12 to 15 minutes. Strain, reserving 1/2 cup (125 mL) of the liquid. Let apples and liquid cool separately. Stir Amaretto into liquid. In large bowl, fold together custard and caramel sauce. In medium bowl, using electric mixer, beat cream until firm peaks form; fold into custard mixture.

Arrange one-third of the sponge cake in bottom of 12-cup (3 L) straight sided glass bowl. Drizzle with one-third of the reserved liquid. Top with one-third of the apples and one-third each of the almonds and caramel custard. Repeat layers twice. Cover and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight. Chilled Blueberry Soufflé

3 cups (750 mL) fresh Ontario Blueberries 3/4 cup (175 mL) granulated sugar 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh lime juice 1 pkg unflavoured gelatin 1 tbsp (15 mL) grated lime zest (outer rind) 4 Ontario Egg whites 1 cup (250 mL) Ontario Whipping Cream 1 tbsp (15 mL) icing sugar Fresh Ontario strawberries

In small saucepan, combine blueberries, 1/2 cup (125 mL) of the sugar and lime juice; bring to boil, crushing berries with back of spoon. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer for about 5 minutes or until thickened. Meanwhile, in small saucepan, sprinkle gelatin over 1/4 cup (50 mL) water; let stand for 1 minute. Heat over low heat until dissolved. Stir into blueberry mixture along with lime zest; refrigerate until cold and thickened but not set, about 2 hours. Fold 24-inch (60 cm) length of waxed paper in half lengthwise; tie tightly around outside of 4cup (1 L) soufflé or other straight-sided dish to make a collar. Grease inside of dish and paper that extends over dish. In large heatproof bowl, whisk

egg whites with remaining sugar. Set over saucepan of boiling water, whisking often, until white, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove bowl from pan. With electric mixer, beat for 8 to 10 minutes until very cold. Fold into berry mixture. Whip 3/4 cup (175 mL) of the cream until stiff peaks form; gently fold into berry mixture. Spoon into prepared dish. Place plastic wrap lightly on top of waxed paper collar; refrigerate for at least 4 hours or until firm. (Soufflé can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours.) To serve, carefully remove collar and wipe dish with damp cloth. Whip remaining cream with icing sugar; pipe into rosettes onto top of soufflé. Let cool enough to handle; remove skin and mash with fork until smooth. Measure 1 cup (250 mL) and place in bowl. Whisk in butter, eggs, maple syrup, vanilla and salt until smooth. Bake tart shells on baking sheet, in batches if necessary, in 375°F (190°C) oven for 5 minutes. Remove from oven. Sprinkle pecans among partially baked shells, gently pushing down any puffed-up pastry. Divide sweet potato mixture among shells. Bake for 20 to 24 minutes or until filling is slightly puffed, almost set and pastry is lightly golden. Let cool on rack. in chicken; cook until no longer pink. Add carrots, cabbage, red pepper and mushrooms; cook, stirring until vegetables soften but are still crisp. Stir reserved soy sauce mixture; add to pan along wh green onion and sprouts; gently stirfry until sprouts are translucent and sauce is thickened, 2 to 3 minutes. Place bowl of lettuce leaves, bowl of warm vegetable mixture, and bowl the Hoisin sauce in centre of table. Eat and drink in historic buildings Now one of Halifax’s bestknown spots, The Five Fishermen Restaurant was once a schoolhouse and a funeral home, handling many of the victims of the Titanic after it sank off the coast of Newfoundland in 1912 as well as the Halifax Explosion in 1917. Nowadays, diners come for some of the country’s freshest seafood, including mussels, oysters, and lobster. Once called the “Citadel of Upper Canada,” the stone block Fort Henry National Historic Site in Kingston, ON, was built on the crest of a peninsula to 46

guard the entrance to the Rideau Canal. In summer and early fall, the Battery Bistro patio has the best view of Lake Ontario and the city’s downtown. Enjoy a meal surrounded by history The 20-block Exchange District National Historic Site in Winnipeg, MB, is a time capsule of around 150 heritage buildings from the turn-of-the-century that have aged virtually intact. Winter in Canada offers extraordinary dining experiences

The five-course dinner menu is exquisite: from the bison tartare starter and maple-glazed sable fish to the house-made lucuma and cacao ice-cream dessert. The setting, however, is somewhat unusual: a tent perched atop a frozen river in the heart of downtown Winnipeg, MB, where winter temperatures plunge to -20 degrees C (-4 degrees F).

Winter in Canada offers some extraordinary dining experiences. Canadian cuisine combines with uniquely Canadian settings— from frozen rivers to icy peaks and remote, snowbound provincial parks—to make for meals to remember. You may never think of “frozen food” quite the same way again. For nearly three weeks every winter, the ice-bound fork of Winnipeg’s Red and Assiniboine rivers becomes home to RAW: Almond, a pop-up restaurant on ice. While the wind howls outside, diners clad in heavy-duty parkas, fur caps and insulated boots gather inside a heated tent, laid out in past years with a long wooden table and stumps for seats. While the setting may be rustic, the food is gourmet. Chef Mandel Hitzer from Winnipeg’s trendy Deer + Almond restaurant partners with the city’s top chefs to devise hearty multi-course menus that show off the best of prairie cuisine. The surrounding scenery, meanwhile, is unforgettable. Just outside, the Red River Mutual Trail—a winter highway for skaters and walkers—winds for six and a half enchanted kilometres (4 mi) through the city. Diners hoping to work up an appetite before a wintry meal can look further west to Vancouver. Atop Grouse Mountain, a unique tour offers guests the chance to experience alpine scenery before enjoying a dinner to remember. Diners don snowshoes and headlamps for a one-hour guided trek into Grouse’s snowbound forests and meadows. After venturing through the winter wonderland and admiring the twinkling city lights far below, adventurers converge on the mountaintop lodge for fondue, an après-ski staple.

The three-course meal starts with a classic cheese fondue, served with fresh-baked organic baguettes. Next comes a hearty broth fondue, paired with a selection of prime cuts, including wild BC salmon, chicken, beef, scallops and pork loin. The meal concludes with a traditional chocolate fondue. Fresh fruit and cinnamon puff pastry are dipped in rich chocolate sauce, optionally spiked with Baileys or another liqueur to ward off winter’s chill. Meanwhile, Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario is home to a one-of-a-kind weekend excursion that has guys’ weekend written all over it. The Stew and Brew Winter Culinary Adventure takes culinary explorers to a remote log cabin deep inside the

7,600-sq-km (3,000-sq-mi.) park. While the snow falls outside, diners feast on rich winter favourites prepared by cabin cooks, from cassoulet to wildgame gumbo and black-beer Irish stew. Meals are paired with a selection of winter craft beers, such as La Fin du Monde, Leffe Brown and London Porter. To work off those calories, groups set out on guided snowshoeing and backcountry skiing in the highlands of Algonquin Provincial Park. Other consummately Canadian excursions at the retreat include ice fishing, snowmobiling and dog sledding.
