Exclusive Interview with Darts Player Daryl Gurney
Daryl Gurney is a 31 year old, Northern Irish darts player who plays for the Professional Darts Corporation. In 2017 he became the first player from Northern Ireland to reach a PDC World Championship quarter-final and was a semifinalist in the UK Open in Minehead in early March and is currently ranked in the top 20 players in the world. The Sticks caught up with Daryl ahead of his appearance in the Stevenage Showdown in May. You were at the Stevenage Showdown last year? Yes it was a great tournament with amazing crowds, the venue was packed and the crowd were loving it and noisy. The more noise the better for me. So the noise does not put you off your game? It is better having a big mass of noise, rather than 50 people sitting in a room and all you hear is one or two voices. The way I see it is I would rather have 10,000 people shouting at me than 100 people, and if they are shouting for me then that’s even better. When did you first play darts? I was 12 when I played darts for the first time. My dad played darts; he played both league and county darts. He got bored practising on his own so he asked me if I would throw with him, just to get in to a rhythm of throwing with somebody else. It took off from there. After six months I had to give him a 100 lead and that is how it started. How did you go from playing with Dad to being a professional darts player? I started in the counties; I was number one in the counties when I was 15 years old that was the men’s league; that got me in to the Embassy world qualifier and the world masters qualifiers. I was originally in the BDO (British Darts Organisation) before switching to join the PDC (Professional Darts Corporation) in 2012 and that’s when I turned professional. I have been lucky to have success in both organisations but there have been some world champions come to the PDC and could not make it here and they went back, it is a very hard transition from BDO to
4
PDC. In the PDC everything is more professional and it actually suits my game better. What did you do before you became a professional darts player? I was a plumber back home in Ireland, to begin with I worked during the day and then played in the evening but then I gave up the plumbing just to play darts. When I watch darts, I am amazed by the speed which players work out the check outs etc, so I guess your maths must be very good? When I first started in darts I could not count and then I used to go to this bar on a Saturday night and it was £2 to enter and you got paired up with a woman, so was mixed pairs for the night and my dad made me mark the score for everyone’s games for two weeks and after that I could count faster than him. What is Q school? It is qualifying school, it is how you get your pro card in the PDC, it nurtures and helps you with the demands of pro darts. You need a card to play in the PDC and all their tournaments, and it lasts for 2 years. When you were growing up which dart player did you look up to? Well in those days we only had BBC so it would be some of the BDO players and my favourite would had been Colin Lloyd, but now I aspire to be as good as Michael Van Gerwen, he is amazing at the moment, he is ½% better than Gary Anderson, who is number 2 in the rankings, both of them are just above the rest of us. We are all trying to improve and put extra practice in. I now look up to Gary as I played with him for years in the BDO and he is still the same person, he has not changed, he is still as nice as I knew him back then. Who is your best mate in the darts world? That would be Dean Winstanley, he is my best friend and we are both under the same management. What is the best thing about being a professional darts player? It is playing in front of thousands of people and they are going mad and having a really good night and when you hit 180’s they are up with their signs. The atmosphere is unbelievable, especially at the Alexandra Palace just before Christmas - there it is electric.
5
How about the worst thing? That has to be all the travelling, the living out of a bag, in and out of hotel rooms, you miss your own home bed. What is your goal for the rest of 2017? I would like to be more consistent, especially away from the TV coverage because that’s how you manage to get on to the TV. I would like to win one of the pro-tour events, and try and break in to the top 16, so I automatically qualify for the European tours; also, if I do well in the TV tournaments, to get into the Premier League for 2018. That’s my aim. How do you see the future of darts? Darts has been massive for the last ten years, but the last few years it has gone beyond what anyone imagined and I think it is going to keep on going that way.

FA Cup: Wayne Shaw’s Pie Resignation – Gross Misconduct! On Monday 20th February 2017 a possible gross misconduct incident occurred surrounding Sutton United reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw. Shaw, who weighs 23st, said he simply wanted to make the crowd laugh towards the end of Sutton’s heroic 2-0 FA Cup defeat on Monday night. Shaw’s conduct highlights a few employment law considerations, which should be taken into account when dealing with similar incident in the workplace from an employee. Matthew from Consensus HR comments “The reserve goalkeeper, Wayne Shaw, can be seen on the television footage as shown above on the BBC eating a pie whilst Sutton were playing against Arsenal in the FA cup. Shaw alleged that the pie cost him nothing (but in the end it obviously cost him his job) and “It wasn’t done for personal gain. Just something to remember, and it certainly is that now.” Following the match it became apparent that a bookmaker had given odds on this happening, and this triggered an investigation from both the Gambling Commission and the Football Association. Wayne was forced to quit his £450-a-week job with the non-league club on Tuesday after the FA and Gambling Commission launched inquiries into the offer. Employees need to be aware that: Damaging your business reputation can be considered as gross misconduct This case still shows that it’s important to take appropriate action against an employee who has, or is likely to, damage the reputation of your business in order to show that you do not tolerate the behaviour demonstrated as acts such as these can be classed as an act of Gross Misconduct which could result in instant dismissal. A complete and thorough investigation needs to take place before taking any disciplinary action and the Acas Code of Practice followed. In this case, Shaw admitted he was aware of the offer and said people had told him they had placed bets on his pie eating. He insisted no close pals or family benefited from it. However it is vital, and a part of the Acas code that a thorough investigation is carried out promptly with the employee in question to establish their story. Only when this has been concluded should a decision be made whether to proceed to a disciplinary ensuring that all the legal specific areas are covered and the allegation noted within all correspondence. It is only then that the disciplining manager should make a decision, which; due to it being Gross Misconduct could be immediate dismissal. PRE-NUP – WHAT’S THAT? DO I NEED ONE? With the romance of Valentine’s Day now well behind us, we can get back to talking about the practical aspects of our relationships. With the unavoidable increase in divorce and separation rates, it means that more of us who are getting married or moving in together are not “first timers“. Not only that, one or both parties may have children from a previous relationship. This can mean ongoing financial ties to an ex-partner and possibly having a home or assets to bring into the new relationship. So it’s more important than ever for couples to take a small step back from the emotional side of their new relationship or wedding plans and think about the practicalities. If they are about to start living together, or planning to tie the knot, they should take legal advice on having a Cohabitation Agreement or Pre-Nuptial Agreement. These don’t have to be long or complicated documents. The aim is to record what can be agreed amicably straight away, to cover what would happen if you ever did split up. For example:• • • •
Do you get to keep the property you brought into the relationship? Do you have to financially support one another after separation? How do you split anything held in joint names? Do you have to share any debts?
The idea of considering a “pre-nup” early on is to avoid the time, anxiety and costs of a complex legal battle further down the line. Of course, no-one has a crystal ball and your thoughts on how assets should be divided between you may change if you stay married for many years, or have children. No problem – you simply agree to review the terms of the Agreement in the future. If you would like more information on having a Cohabitation or Pre-Nuptial Agreement drawn up please contact Vijaya Sumputh on 0208 363 4444 or email her at vijaja.sumputh@curwens.co.uk Curwens LLP is your local firm of solicitors offering most areas of legal advice – based in Royston, Hoddesdon and Enfield. www.curwens.co.uk

Ten a Day? It kicked off one heck of a social media storm recently when headlines told us we should be eating not five but ten portions of fruit and veg daily. New research done by Imperial College London says we should double the current advice and the intake should be 800g a day (or ten portions of fresh fruit and vegetables of 80g each) It’s thought this could prevent over seven thousand cancer deaths and almost fourteen thousand people suffering strokes every year. Radio presenters, columnists and the whole of social media were awash with people claiming it was impossible and unrealistic, also very expensive. I beg to differ, to me its spot on advice. There are some tribes who live to a ripe old age whose diet is so intrinsically packed with vegetables they would lose count. It’s really our habit of seeing vegetables as a side dish and fruit as an expensive snack that is the problem, if we recognise that a vegetable meal can be a meal of its own merit, it becomes easier. By far the quickest way to health is to ‘drink’ your veg, if you start the day with a smoothie or fresh juice it becomes second nature to be taking in at least ten portions throughout the day. Using a juicer (dig it out of the cupboard or get a second hand one) juice a small apple or carrot as a base, add a handful of spinach or kale, florets of broccoli, a chunk of fennel and a quarter of a lemon – serve over ice, There is a nutrient packed bit of liquid fuel giving you an antioxidant boost. If you prefer a fruit smoothie you can blend together frozen berries, banana (or any soft fruits) add some live yoghurt, some nuts and seeds, even some oats for a filling breakfast. The other obvious thing for adults to do as well as children is ‘sneak’ the veg into your meals. By that I mean cook from scratch and add veg to everything. A typical day could be breakfast of poached egg with spinach, (and a fresh fruit and veg juice) Lunch could be an avocado or tuna salad, snack on an apple, satsuma or banana and a handful of nuts, and even if you love your traditional meat dishes, if you are making spaghetti bolognaise, make your own sauce and add to the fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic, celery, carrots, (any veg really because it can be blended in) and add a raw side salad too. If you want to be really traditional, finish up with apple crumble – voila – at least ten portions. I don’t buy the affordability argument either, if you can get to one of the brilliant local street markets, they almost all have a wide variety of fruit and veg for one pound a bowl. Definitely cheaper than junk food, and preferable to the hospital food you could be eating if you don’t manage close to the ten!

Review of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast by Sonny Etchell
The trend of making live-action adaptations of classic Disney movies continues with Bill Condon’s re-imagining of the 1991 classic, Beauty and the Beast. Emma Watson is a fine Belle and has a beautiful singing voice. But the film is cast perfectly all round, with strong performances from Josh Gad as LeFou, Kevin Kline as Belle’s father Maurice and a standout portrayal of Gaston by Luke Evans. We also have all of the performances from actors we never actually see. Dan Stevens did a great job with his motion-capture performance as the Beast and Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen and Emma Thompson were fantastic as the inanimate objects of the castle, Lumière, Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts. The only holdback this film has is its runtime. The original classic was just 84 minutes long while this comes in at over 2 hours. Although you don’t want a beat for beat remake of the original, this film added a lot to the story that felt unnecessary, like it was added for the sole purpose of keeping people watching for longer. While some of their changes worked very well, some just took you out of the film and felt tedious to watch. The only other minor problem with the film is that they replace the Beasts song “If I Can’t Love Her”, a powerful moment in the original and a great song, with a different song that was written for this remake. The rest of the songs, however, are just as enjoyable as they were in the original. “Belle” is our first time hearing Emma Watson’s singing voice. It’s a fun, sweet, ensemble tune that perfectly sets the tone for the movie and the films take on “Be Our Guest” is a visually stunning moment with brilliant effects and colours filling the screen. It’s a highlight of the whole movie. Overall, the timeless, classic story makes the 2017 Beauty and the Beast a very enjoyable film. The production design, costumes are exquisite and the music and performances are fantastic. Had the film been under 2 hours, it would be everything you could want from a live action Beauty and the Beast! Sonny Etchell is a student and film reviewer www.sonnyetchell.com

THE MAD, FORMERLY RED, SQUIRREL
It is a rare thing to get that Eureka moment, but on Saturday it happened to me. I am pleased to say no liquid was lost or spilt in obtaining the Eureka moment. This rare event took place on Berkhamsted High Street on a Saturday morning, at the Red Squirrel Brewing Company brewery shop. I had seen the Mad Squirrel formerly known as Red Squirrel Brewery shop on the web when I realised I needed to kill a couple of hours in Berkhamsted on a Saturday morning. I saw it was listed as a tasting bar and craft bottle store and wondered how on earth this was going to work. I ventured through the front door and there was a whole wall stocked from floor to ceiling with bottles of beer. At the end of the room I spied a bar and was naturally drawn there. On arrival at the bar I was rewarded with a list of beers from porter, through Pilsner to draught bitter. However I spotted straight away there were no pumps on the counter. Then a gentleman called Leo emerged, wearing a red squirrel brewery shop shirt and pointed to the double figure of pumps behind him. For some reason, which I still can’t fathom I asked for a pint of Flying Squirrel. This was marked on the board on the back of the bar as Export and pils 4.4.Abv. Now at this point I have to admit lager is not my favourite drink and have to own up to have produced an offspring who only drinks the stuff. I struck up a conversation with Leo who proved not only to be a bar man but also a marketing man and historian. He informed me the brewery was based in Potten End and the company now had further shops in Chesham, Amersham and recently
16
opened in High Wycombe. It was also going through a re-branding to reflect its growth hence, the change from red to mad squirrel. By now the taste buds had returned to normal and I had moved on to Mr Squirrel and the good people of Berkhamsted and surround were stirring and making their way into the shop. Then it happened, a gentleman came to the bar and produced a bottle with what most people would know as a Grolsch top. Said bottle was then placed in what I had assumed was an out of work cake stand and was purely decorative behind the bar. The gentleman asked for a refill of his favourite, which was then provided to him through the redundant cake stand into what is called a Growler. It was then the Eureka moment hit me. Here I was staring at the future. In one space there was a take away (off licence for our older readers), bar and shop to try new things with facility to make sure you like it before buying it. By now I had moved onto a pint of Long nights and managed to get in a second pint before I was reminded I had to be somewhere else by 3 pm. I now know how Nando’s felt when they saw the potential of selling of the same standard nationwide and then world-wide. The same potential awaits the owners of the mad squirrel. Remember you saw it here first. For further information go to: www.madsquirrel.uk

Hero Cheese of the Month - Monterey Jack Monterey Jack earns the rightful position as a true “American” cheese since it originated in the Mexican Franciscan friars of Monterey, California. Around the 1700s, these monasteries around the Monterey region were making a semi-firm, creamy, mild flavoured cheese from cow’s milk which they aged for a little period. An American entrepreneur named David Jack realized its commercial value and started selling it all over California. The cheese came to be known as “Monterey Jack's” or “Jack's Monterey,” eventually acquiring the name Monterey Jack. The cheese is commonly used in Mexican and Spanish cuisine as its mild in flavour and melts really well. It's akin in taste and texture to Colby and Cheddar. Variants of Monterey Jack known as Dry Jack (aged version) and Pepper Jack (pepper spiced) are also quite popular. Monterey Jack is available across all grocery stores and supermarkets in the United States and now on sale at the Cheese Plate in Buntingford. Consider a Pinot Noir and Riesling with Jack cheese. Lamb and Mutton Spring is finally here and there is no better indicator then the arrival of all the lambs. With lots of sheep and lambs now out in the fields we celebrate spring and what a delicious meal lamb makes! Buying British lamb not only means you are supporting British farmers but you are also buying a local, high welfare, low carbon footprint product. But you don’t just have to buy lamb, mutton is also an excellent product that tastes just as good. Here is food hero Joanna Blythman on the difference between Lamb and Mutton. Joanna: People who think they know what lamb is all about may do a double take when they first eat hogget and mutton (that’s meat from sheep aged more than one and two years, respectively). These traditional meats offer all the reliable taste we expect from lamb, only more so. Most modern lamb comes from sheep four to six months old. But if the animal is given more time to range freely; all the while chomping away on tussocky bracken, heather, herbs and clovers, its meat develops an infinitely more interesting, fuller flavour that is exceptionally satisfying. The grain of the meat becomes finer too – even more pleasing to the tongue. At this time of year, why buy anaemic and overpriced “spring” lamb from sheep fattened up indoors on compound feeds, or imported long-haul from the southern hemisphere, when hogget and mutton, patiently reared in the UK, is on offer? Why is it good for me? The high-quality protein in hogget and mutton sates the appetite and repairs and maintains our bodies. These meats have every essential amino acid we need, along with high levels of valuable micronutrients, including easily absorbed iron to energise us, zinc to support the immune system, and B vitamins to help us think straight. Since sheep graze on green pastures, the fat in their meat is an excellent source of conjugated linoleic acid, which is heart-healthy and helps protect us against cancer.
