Interview with Writer Susan Hall Susan Hill has been a professional writer for over fifty years. Her books have won awards and prizes including the Whitbread, the John Llewellyn Rhys and the Somerset Maugham; and have been shortlisted for the Booker. She was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Honours in 2012. Her novels include “Strange Meeting”, “I’m the King of the Castle”, “A Kind Man” and “From the Heart”. She has also published autobiographical works and collections of short stories as well as the Simon Serrailler series of crime novels. The play of her ghost story The Woman in Black has been running in London’s West End since 1989. She is married with two adult daughters and lives in North Norfolk. The Woman in Black arrives in Aylesbury Waterside Theatre from Tues 26 to Sat 30 Nov as part of its UK Tour and has been running in the West End for 30 years! We sat down with the acclaimed author of the original novel, Susan Hill, to find out all about how she came up with the spooky story of The Woman in Black and what it’s like seeing your work told on stage. Did you anticipate this longevity when the show first opened? Oh no, we thought it would run for six weeks! It opened in Scarborough in 1988, and it started because they had a pantomime on in the theatre and Alan Aykborn who was the Artistic Director wanted to have something to put into the studio theatre alongside the pantomime. Stephen Mallatrat went on holiday and at the airport he picked up The Woman in Black. He was then lying on a beach in Greece and thought he could make this work on the stage. When he wrote to me asking if he could adapt it I thought it was mad but it’s a truly remarkable piece of theatre. Were you nervous about handing over your story to a new team when you were originally approached about adapting the novel to the stage? Not at all! The play is very true to the book and yet simultaneously very different by nature of being a piece of theatre. It works brilliantly in theatrical terms and it is still my book, but it is also not – and that is exciting. What was it like the first time you saw your characters appearing in the flesh on stage? The Woman in Black herself very much existed in my mind, I knew what she felt like, so it is very peculiar to feel her presence in a theatre. They two gentlemen are such brilliantly developed characters and utilised so well by Stephen’s writing for the stage that they become quite different. I’m always interested to see new actors taking it over, because although it is the same text, every pair of actors bring something different to it, it really does change! Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation utilises some very traditional theatrical techniques in very innovative ways. Does the play capture the atmosphere of Eel Marsh House the way you envisioned it? I think the great thing about the show is that it really does use the theatre, the stage, and it makes the audience work. Stephen Mallatratt’s writing makes you use your imagination, and that’s the brilliance of it and also what makes some elements all the more scary! 4
Where did your original idea for The Woman in Black come from? I have always loved reading ghost stories but had realised that in recent years not a lot had been written. People were writing horror, but horror is different to me. You can have a horror story that doesn’t have a ghost, whereas a ghost story could be horror but also could be unnerving in a different way or even heart-breaking. I ended up making a list of the key elements I thought a good ghost story should have and worked from that. I thought it should have atmosphere, lots of atmosphere, an isolated location which in itself is unnerving, and I was absolutely sure that the ghost needed a reason to be there. I wasn’t sure at first whether that would be because they wanted revenge, or they needed to communicate with the living world but I knew they had to have motivation. The Woman in Black, she came to me straight away – I wanted her to be a woman and of her period. Then various things that I had found alarming as a child came back into my mind and I wanted to incorporate them including the image of the dusty, cobweb covered nursery which I always think has elements of Miss Havisham in it. Why do you think we as readers or audience members enjoy being scared? It’s a funny thing isn’t it? It’s a very primitive instinct, to be frightened. However, the joy of a ghost story is that it is just practice really, we are being frightened delightfully. Whilst we may jump and scream in the theatre, we know that we are safe and can allow ourselves to be scared which I think is essential! Perhaps it is our way of learning to manage our fears? How does it make you feel when you hear the audience reactions to The Woman in Black? I’ve seen it so many times and yet sometimes it even makes me jump! I like to watch the show from is from the wings and be able to see the audience from that angle. It’s especially good when you have school parties in who aren’t expecting to be frightened but then as it begins to get tense suddenly you see the body language of the whole audience shift. Sometimes people react really strongly and shout things out almost involuntarily as they’re so involved in the action on stage! Do you believe in ghosts? I think I do, in a sense. I’ve never seen one (as far as I know!), but enough people I know have been in a place which emanates a sense of evil and have felt the urge to immediately get away from it. Also, you always hear of dogs having that sense of something not being right, being spooked, and why would an animal make that up? For lots of young people, coming to see The Woman in Black will be their first experience of live theatre. What do you advise they look out for? Go into the theatre with an open mind and try to immerse yourself in the show. Allow yourself to imagine everything the show invites you to!

HR Column The boss of Lloyds of London says he was ‘devastated’ by a report into widespread sexual misconduct and harassment against women at the insurance market. The 133-year old firm commissioned a survey into the company’s culture after Bloomberg released its damming report in March with CEO John Neal admitting the survey is ‘validating that those problems exist’ and pledging action. Earlier this year, Lloyds banned staff from drinking during office hours. “From the latest news the culture reported at Lloyds is very disturbing with an old lads’ attitude against women. All companies need to understand and fully investigate any accusations they receive in relation to any form of sexual misconduct, harassment or any areas covered under the Equality Act 2010 and carry out the appropriate action or end up facing the consequences such as Employment Tribunal awards which can be claimed from day one of employment” comments Matthew, MD of Consensus HR. More than a million British workers are not getting the holiday pay they are legally entitled to. Think-tank Resolution Foundation also says that almost one in ten workers do not receive a payslip – just one example of what it notes is a steady rise in precarious working conditions. This comes as economists warn that despite an employment boom across Britain, job security has been undermined by regulation which is failing to keep pace with the changing nature of work. “The recent research in The Guardian again discusses the issue with employees pay not being correct and the issue with employees not getting their holiday entitlement. Employers need to ensure that they are following the Working Time Directive (WTD) and ensuring their team is getting their legal entitlement as this is one of the main areas why employees go to an Employment Tribunal and, with average tribunal costs being £28k for 4 days I would rather maintain our reputation” comments Matthew. Retail has gone online, and the job losses are inordinately affecting women, according to a new study. Online shopping and automation have seen 108,000 UK sales and customer service jobs lost between 2011 and 2018, with about 75,000 of those roles held by women. While almost 33,000 men also lost their jobs, it is suggested that this was offset by more warehouse and delivery roles created by Amazon and others – roles predominantly filled by men. “These statistics demonstrate how the gender of an employee still plays a big part in the roles/careers they undertake despite this being one of the characteristics protected under the 2010 Equality Act. Different sexes are still attracted to certain sectors, but it is up to employers when recruiting to ensure they do not stereotype/discriminate a role for a specific sex” comments Matthew.

YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS
FREE legal advice No need to adjust your glasses, it isn’t a misprint. The University of Hertfordshire has just opened a Law Clinic at its Hatfield campus to enable students to get first hand experience in dealing with real clients. All their work is supervised by qualified solicitors and is free of charge. The clinic offers advice in Family and Employment Law, as well as assistance in drafting Lasting Powers of Attorney. They can also provide advice to small businesses regarding Intellectual Property rights. This means that if someone cannot afford to get legal advice in these areas, or just does not want to go through the formal channel of instructing a law firm, they have an alternative route. It is clearly a great opportunity for the students too but shows the University’s commitment to pro bono services and its ongoing wish to have strong links to the local communities within the county. Some of the students will also be running a specialist family law advice clinic out of a local domestic abuse charity based in Hertford – Future Living. Curwens (along with other local law firms) are helping to supervise the students at the Law Clinic. We believe pro bono work to support the local community is really important and of course the law clinic students will be the next generation of lawyers. To make an appointment with the Law Clinic ring 01707 284115 or if you would like any further information and advice from solicitors in relation to any area of law please contact Curwens on 020 8363 4444. Russell Grant's Monthly Horoscopes November
ARIES (March21st-April20th) You can't afford to ignore a tense financial situation in mid-November. The Full Moon on the 12th insists you re-think your spending habits. It may be necessary to find a more lucrative job, curtail luxury purchases and pay off some debts. Talk to a money manager if you're over your head in bills. They can consolidate your bills into one monthly payment and may even eliminate the interest payment. On the 26th, the New Moon warns against venturing into unknown territory. Although you long for adventure, you need a reliable guide. Someone who pretends to be an expert won't give you the service and attention you deserve. Instead of trying something new, maintain the status quo. The old routine may be boring, but it won't put you in the path of loss or danger. There will be opportunities to expand your horizons next year. Until 2020, hold off on overseas trips.
each of you to hit upon the right formula to move this partnership forward.
CANCER (June22nd-July23rd) A group effort won't pan out the way you wanted. A tense Full Moon on the 12th indicates creative squabbles. This is one of those situations where too many cooks have spoiled the broths. Although you have worked to keep your ego in check, this has only allowed pushier individuals to get their way. You'll be highly disappointed with the result. The sooner you can escape this organisation, the better. There are better channels for your extraordinary talent. The New Moon on the 26th inspires you to begin a health regimen. Be realistic when setting fitness goals. It will take time and persistence to reach a particular milestone. Let the beginning states of this ritual be focus on building endurance. You may discover that you can't exercise as vigorously as you had hoped. That's perfectly fine. Slow and steady wins the race. Be sure you get enough rest between workouts.
TAURUS (April21st-May21st) Mid-November will push you to be more demanding. On the 14th, the Full Moon will prompt you to confront a demanding friend, romantic partner or business associate. If you sense they'll never give you the support and sympathy you need, you may decide to go solo. Although this situation will be highly emotional, it will make logical sense. You've worked hard to resolve your differences and assert your needs, but your other half has been indifferent to your plight. The New Moon on the 26th will tempt you to get involved in another physical relationship, but hold off. Although you crave intimacy, it can't be achieved with someone you barely know. Don't let a sweet-talking suitor convince you to share your resources with them. Until they've proven their loyalty over an extended period of time, you should keep your finances separate. Above all, don't let powerful chemistry cloud your judgment.
LEO (July24th-August23rd) You'll be expected to do some damage control at work in midNovember. The Full Moon on the 12th could shed light on an ongoing problem. Dealing with dissatisfied customers will be challenging. You'll have to fight to strike a compromise that satisfies both clients and your company. Listen more than you speak. Don't be pressured into proposing a resolution until you've heard all sides of the story. On the 26th, the New Moon will put you in the path of romance. Don't be so quick to pursue a serious relationship with a humorous suitor. Until you can pinpoint their motives, it's best to keep this relationship casual. The last thing you want is to pour all your energy into a person who has no intention of making a serious commitment. If you already have a partner, take their inflated promises with a grain of salt. Your amour will have a tendency to exaggerate at the end of November.
GEMINI (May22nd-June21st) A shocking secret will come to light, due to a revelatory Full Moon on the 12th. You'll be dismayed to discover a charming colleague has been involved in underhanded activity. If they ask for you to cover their mistakes, refuse. You can't compromise your relationship for the sake of this manipulator. Protect your interests. The New Moon on the 26th indicates a partnership will take root. There will be confusion about which roles each participant assumes. An extended trial and error period will be necessary to sort out who should perform which jobs. Be flexible. Although you're very good at certain tasks, your other half may be even better at performing these jobs. Similarly, you may not be confident about carrying out certain duties but could discover you rise admirably to these challenges. Maintain an open mind about who does what. It will take time for
VIRGO (August24th-September23rd) Returning from a trip or graduating from a course of study could be rather deflating in mid-November. Instead of celebrating this achievement, the tense Full Moon on the 12th will make you nervous about the future. While it's true you won't be sure about your next moves, that isn't a bad thing. Keep your options open and stop pressuring yourself to forge a new path. If you have had a recent success; bask in the glory. It's counterintuitive for a humble person like you to take pride in your success; do so anyway. The New Moon on the 26th marks some changes to your domestic life. You may move in with your significant other or relocate to a diverse area. It will take time to adjust to these surroundings. Be patient. Establishing ground rules and learning customs can make you anxious at times.
8
Breathe deep and take comfort in the knowledge you are incredibly flexible.
harsh criticism upon you. Resist the urge to be defensive, especially on social media. Maintaining a quiet, dignified silence will prompt fair minded people to take a second look at your work. You're being unfairly accused of broadcasting a troubling message. Those who know you personally will immediately realise these charges are completely false. Slowly but surely, fans will come to your defence. A situation that begins as upsetting will become empowering. The New Moon on the 26th will tempt you to retreat to a quiet hideaway where you can lick your wounds. Someone will urge you to make a comment or give an interview. Politely turn away these requests. Despite your desire to set the record straight, you won't be ready to face the public at the end of November. Use this time to recover from all this upheaval.
LIBRA (September24th-October23rd) On the 12th, the Full Moon will bring an unexpected expense. You'll have to scramble to pay this bill. Keep a careful eye on your bank balance. It could dip into the red if you forget to record an outgoing cheque or monthly payment. Although this situation is frustrating, it is also a teaching moment. Learning to stick to a budget will help you make the most of your finances. The New Moon on the 26th will bring some surprising news. Be wary about believing a story that seems too good to be true. Similarly, it's important to take gloomy news reports with a grain of salt. Sometimes the media wants to stir up fear as a means to boost ratings. Instead of falling victim to despair, fight to maintain an optimistic outlook. This can be accomplished by surrounding yourself with positive people who make you laugh. The end of November won't be nearly as bleak as it appears.
AQUARIUS (January21st-February19th) Home and family demand your attention on the 12th. That's when the Full Moon makes you realise how much you've been neglecting your nearest and dearest. Being in constant communication with work has undermined your personal relationships. It's time to change your priorities. This may mean leaving a position that requires you are constantly on call. To make up for the loss of income, you may decide to run a business from your home. This will allow you to have a more stabilising influence on your household. The New Moon on the 26th warns against going on expensive outings. Be honest with friends who are always urging you to join them at clubs and restaurants. Tell them you are on a strict budget and need to be more resourceful. You'll soon learn who is truly invested in your wellbeing. Anyone who turns up their nose at your frugal ways is not really your friend.
SCORPIO (Oct24th-Nov22nd) The Full Moon on the 12th brings attention to a troubled relationship. You will no longer be able to ignore the troubling behaviour of someone close to your heart. Resist the temptation to explain away these jarring incidents. Instead, suggest you go to counselling together. If your friend will not get help, you may decide to talk to a professional and seek their advice. Find ways to get some distance from this suffocating union. On the 26th, the New Moon will bring a moneymaking opportunity that requires a personal investment. It's best to turn this job down, even if it seems incredibly exciting. All that glisters is not gold. The person who has put this deal together has a troubling past. Although they look the part of a competent professional, they're actually quite troubled. Keep your hard-earned cash safe in your bank account. Hold out for a job with a company that has a respected track record.
PISCES (February20th-March20th) You won't be able to put off mundane tasks in mid-November. The Full Moon on the 12th will require you to stop what you're doing and attend to routine paperwork and household chores. Negative feedback from an authority figure will raise your hackles. It will take all your strength to maintain a dignified silence while they heap criticisms on you. Instead of being defensive, do what is required and then review your options. No matter what happens, don't write an angry email or post an enraged missive on social media. These words will come back to haunt you. You'll be tempted to take a career offer on the 26th, but hold off. The New Moon is clouding aspects of this job that will be very distressing. If you can, do some research into the company in question. You may discover that morale is very low, thanks to deceptive business practices and a confusing chain of command.
SAGITTARIUS(Nov23rd-Dec21st) It will be time to make a decision about a health matter on the 12th. The Full Moon will require you to find a treatment for a nagging ache and pain. It's possible this problem could be stress-related. Making changes to your daily routine is critical to your wellbeing. If this means breaking a bad habit, getting treatment for an addiction or leaving a toxic situation, do it. You'll be tempted to assume a different role on the 26th, thanks to the New Moon. Beware of making decisions out of a sense of defiance or anger. If an annoying relative wants you to take a certain path, don't go in the other direction out of spite. Work out which options are truly best for you. Your decision may delight a manipulative family member, but don't think you are playing into their hands. When you trust your head over your heart, you'll make the right decision regardless of the influences around you.

Volunteering is Big Business This will come as no surprise to those who’ve seen the increasingly popular three-word acronym C.S.R. gaining momentum - that’s Corporate Social Responsibility to you and me! Encouraged by the moral compasses of the younger members of the workforce who are recreating the workplace in their own image. Flexible working and social conscience are at the top of many people’s work agendas and volunteering as part of CSR is very much ‘de rigeur’. It’s not all hot air either, a recent survey carried out by the volunteering charity CSV estimated that approximately 70% of FTSE 100 companies now run some form of an employee volunteering programme. Andrew Haldane, Chief Economist at the Bank of England, gave a speech last year claiming that “frequent, formal volunteering” produces £24 billion worth of economic output in the UK each year. Haldane says this figure is “equivalent to 1.5% of GDP” Businesses benefit from providing their staff with something which helps them gain skills and confidence. Studies indicate it also reduces stress, anxiety, sick leave as well as corporate tax bills, while volunteers feel a sense of community, connection and increase compassion not to mention increased job satisfaction and loyalty to their employer. So a real win/win! Volunteering sits well within our family values of ‘Commitment, Compassion and a Shared Vision’ and we at The Accountancy Practice have volunteered for two very different organisations – Home-start Herts (for whom we are Ambassadors) and The Samaritans, and we do the accounts for another local charity, Support4Sight. The benefits which John gained from The Samaritans helped him along a path which has revolutionised his life. Volunteering for two hours a week before work gave him a perspective on his own stresses, and the ability to step back and ‘listen’ to callers encouraged him to start running his own meditation sessions. I volunteered with Home-start, the national charity which supports struggling parents with children under ten, in their homes. Full training is given, it’s comprehensive and covers a multitude of personal skills which are also essential for a harmonious workplace. Local award-winning charity Support4Sight offers befriending and counselling skills and runs helpdesks in hospitals such as Addenbrookes for those diagnosed with conditions which impair their sight. Helping people retain their independence and quality of life is their worthy goal. The experience gained from volunteering has been shown to help relieve stress, provide a sense of purpose and increase skills. Not forgetting that people wanting to get into work, or return for that matter, can find it helps give them experience that makes them more employable. It seems that volunteering is one of those rare activities that is ‘good for you’ and genuinely benefits all concerned!

Art Profile – Heather Miller Heather Miller has been exhibiting at ART @ MG-Mardleybury Gallery for over three years, during this time her life as a working artist has expanded to give her the opportunity to share her skills. Currently Heather teaches other aspiring artists how to use acrylics via both art demonstrations to art societies around the UK and art workshops, based at the Joe Daisy Studio.
Working chiefly in acrylics and acrylic inks Heather is able to work quickly and expressively with a glorious array of colours. Her current body of artworks evoke those memorable days of Spring that we all love. Through instinctive positioning of light and colour, Heather depicts her love of the local woodlands shafted in light, with the harmony of reflections bouncing in glorious pools of water alongside a pathway of bluebells thus allowing the viewer the opportunity to imagine a ‘memorable walk through the woods’.
As well as currently exhibiting with Mardleybury Gallery, Heather has previously exhibited paintings and life drawings at Contemporary Art Fairs, Art Shed, The JoeDaisy Studio, The Maynard Gallery, Gravelly Barn, Art Van Go and other various art shows.

Lowlander Botanical Beer
Botanically Brewed Beers Whilst traditionally beer is brewed with hops, water and yeast, at Lowlander brewing starts with peeling dozens of oranges, cooking spices, extracting bags full of herbs and making teas and tinctures, using the same principles as gin distillation. By using a variety of brewing processes and natural, botanical ingredients, Lowlander is able to get the best amount of both flavour and aroma into their beers. Lowlander’s four botanically brewed beers are White Ale, Pale Ale, I.P.A and Porter. Botanical Infusion Beers (2.5% abv) They have also recently introduced their low abv (2.5%) Botanical Infusion beers. Inspired by the aromatics of a beautifully garnished G&T, their Ginger & Kaffir Lime and Yuzu & Pink Grapefruit Infusions are best served differently, as a long drink garnished with fresh mint or pink grapefruit.
Zero Alcohol Wit (White) Beer (0.00% abv) Whether you’re designated driver, pregnant or just dialling down your alcohol intake, Lowlander also have their first no-alcohol beer. It’s time… It’s Roast Time here at Big Barn Us Brits are happy to have a roast whatever the weather and at any time of year; it’s a brilliant meal to bring the family together for and it’s the perfect excuse to ban the phones, tablets and the TV for an hour to eat great food and catch up. ‘Roasts’ should never mean that non-meat eaters amongst us don’t feel too left out either. A great roast should have plenty of veg and a caring host can easily make a separate veggie stock gravy. While the supermarket shelves are stacked with imported meat joints at lower prices, it’s often very tempting to opt for these, but while it’s cheaper, what you’re buying has lower animal welfare standards and we really can’t tell what kind of life the animal has had and how much weight has been added by pumping water in to the meat. That’s not the case if you shop locally and pay a visit to your local butcher. There you can ask about the meat you buy, whether its grass fed beef, free range chicken or lamb, or even slow growing rare breeds for extra flavour.
Sunday lunch for the family If you’re lucky enough to grow your own veg, the humble roast is a great way to use up your bounty from the garden. Now’s the time to consume your cabbage and leek crops and they’re perfect by themselves or in a cauliflower bake. If you want something different, try roasted squash to partner your golden roast potatoes. They’re brilliant with left over peppers and a beef or lamb joint. Just halve and stuff them with some tomatoes and a touch of basil pesto, bake for 30min at 200c and you have a perfect accompaniment to a rich joint with some mashed potatoes. You need look no further than our local food map for producers and retailers offering everything from delicious British meat, to condiment companies making the tastiest mint sauce and mustards. And, whatever your meat preference – lamb smothered with mint sauce, or pork with a dollop of apple sauce and a chunk of crackling, you’ll find the best meat for sale on the BigBarn marketplace. If you have a favourite roast dinner recipe, why not share it with us? For the chance to win a prize, please video your recipe and add it to KIS (Keep it Simple) Cookery. Please have a look at existing videos here and try and keep your video less than 2 minutes long.

Fabulous Full-Bodied Reds That Work Wonders in Winter. It does not feel long ago I was able to enjoy a glass of white or rose in the sun, whilst now it’s wet windy and dark, making me reach for a winter warmer. The first thing that jumps to mind is a full-bodied powerhouse and there is a massive choice available in France and Italy. It’s the Bordeauxs, Cote Du Rhones and the southern regions, along with stunning Piemontes like Barolo and Barbaresco, along with the southern regions and islands. What these wines have in common is a dark berries expression and variant spicy tones; here are some of Cavavin’s favourites. Rhone Valley CAMILLE CAYRAN LA RESERVE CAIRANNE ROUGE 2017 £12.00 Ripe black raspberry aromas intermix dried herbs and peppered meats. Medium to full bodied the palate is blessed with rich black cherry, blackberries and liquorice fruit which sits atop scorched earth, herbs and spicy pepper elements.
Bordeaux
CHATEAU DURFORT-VIVENS JARDINS DE DURFORT MARGAUX 2011 £32.50 Fresh and lifted nose bursting with dark cherry, blackcurrant, hints of floral, smokey oak and spicy undertones. Chocolate, vanilla, with flavours of ripe blackberries, blackcurrants and cherries. Ample of tannins, sweet and ripe, medium finish
Southern France DOMAINE LES GRANDES COSTES PIC SAINT-LOUP 2015 £24.50 On the eye this is a very deep red. Nose has fruity, aromas of red fruits, aromas of spices. Palate is round, warming with cocoa, vanilla and minerals, long persistence finish, a very complex wine.
30
Piemonte VILLA CASETTA BARBARESCO 2005 £23.50 Extremely refined red. Sleek and very well-crafted. Fascinating aromas of walnut plums and crushed berries. Full-bodied with velvety tannins and a long caressing finish. This is built for ageing and is wonderfully harmonious. A glorious wine.
SACCO BAROLO DOCG 2011 £22.50 This wine will delight with its intense bouquet of mature red fruit and tobacco and the ethereal Tar and Roses" of classic mature Barolo. It is at the lighter end of the Barolo spectrum and fully mature.
Puglia
ROCCA ESTATE TORRI D'ORO NEGROAMARO SALENTO IGT 2015 £12.50 Firstly, notice the colour which is deeply dark. Secondly the nose is intense, with hints of ripe red fruits, figs, black cherries and pleasantly spicy notes. On the palate there's delicious unobtrusive oak and a velvety roundedness.
