Interview with The Moody Blues’ John Lodge As He Prepares for His Solo 10,000 Light Years Tour in the UK in April Interview by Jon Kirkman John Lodge of the Moody Blues is about to embark on a series of solo dates in the UK. John released his second solo album, 10,000 Light Years Ago in 2015 and explains how he was inspired to restart his solo career due to the resurgence in the sales of vinyl albums. He talks fondly about his former Moody Blues bandmate, Ray Thomas who passed away in January 2018. John also discusses why he will always be a “Moody Blue”, and what it was like to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and join his idol Buddy Holly.

Jon Kirkman (JK): You have just appeared as a special guest on Cruise to The Edge, and as we sit here in the gulf of Mexico watching the sunset, things couldn’t be better for you, really, as an artist with your solo band and career. John Lodge (JL): It's absolutely perfect and it couldn’t be further from Birmingham! (laughs) JK: The concert last night was really well received and you looked like you were having a great time. You still have the desire to get out and perform. JL: Yeah! Have bass: will travel, what can I say. I started when I was 15 and met Ray Thomas and we formed a band called El Riot & The Rebels, and within a year we were playing four gigs a week. It seems that I have been doing that all my life. I enjoy doing it, I still play every day. I love what I do, and I love rock and roll and I am a bit of a gypsy too. JK: Having been at the top for over fifty years now with The Moody Blues, and yet you seem very at ease despite there being a few technical problems before you went on last night. You were smiling and very much like an oasis of calm, even though, as we say, rock and roll is a bit like “Hurry up and wait". JL: Rock and roll is all about that for sure. But what you have to do is have perfect trust in your crew and I trust my crew completely and know that they’re going to make everything right for me. And if you have faith in them as I do, and bear in 4

mind they want to be part of that success too, then I let them get on with it and don’t panic. JK: And when you went on stage everything dropped into place. The audience were waiting and when you stepped out they went crazy and that, still even after all these years has to be a great thrill for you?

JL: It's really good when you have written a song you want to get that song across in the best way possible. On this cruise it is slightly different because it is a “Prog Rock” cruise, so there are people on here who have probably never seen me and may not again, along with the Moody Blues fans on here, so you want to give your best. The best thing for me is to try and look the audience in the eye, which with big audiences is difficult, but if you smile and enjoy yourself. I think that comes across and the audience can relate to that and be a part of it. JK: I think you are luckier than most because you have some excellent material to perform and many of your songs are great and instantly recognisable and have touched millions of people over the last fifty years. And again, that must be incredibly gratifying. JL: Well, there’s one song in the set now which we perform, “(Evening) Time To Get Away" from Days of Future Passed, and when you look into the audience, there are probably very few people who are in the audience who were old enough to have bought that album when it first came out in 1967. So over the years they have either come to know that song, or I am playing the song for them for the first time. And that’s what’s really interesting for me because it's like a deep cut track. It's not a hit single that you would hear on AM radio in America. JK: I can remember last year seeing you, and you were performing "Peak Time" from the same album. And while I knew the song, I never heard it on the radio in the UK. JL: No. In the UK, Radio One had just started and there were problems with a thing called needle–time, which limited how much music you could play on the radio. You would only really get to hear what was in the chart, so there was little 5

chance of hearing a deep cut or an album track in the UK. And I think this is where the Moodies did well in America and in American radio, because we recorded in stereo and American radio was just getting into stereo on the FM stations, particularly in the college towns, and they wanted to play albums, sometimes in their entirety, or at least, one side of an album, which never happened in the UK. It’s a shame really, because there was so much great music out then and many in the UK missed out on the exposure. People for instance like Tim Hardin, who I still play at home. JK: We had the 50th Anniversary of the Moody Blues album In Search Of The Lost Chord last year, and there are more anniversaries coming up for the band. You and Justin both had big hits off that album, Justin with "Voices In The Sky", and you with "Ride My See-Saw". How did "Ride My See-Saw" come about? JL: Well we discussed this earlier today, and wherever you were brought up, that’s the culture you lean towards. And at that time, we had not been to America, but we had travelled to Eastern Europe, and I noticed then that all the cultures were different, and it made me relate back to my childhood. Whatever I learned at school, once I left school it became a different place, and you had to readjust really quickly to find out what the world was about and really, that song, "Ride My See-Saw" is about the ups and downs of life. But at the end of the day, keep rockin’, keep going forward. Whatever you have learned, keep it and try to learn what is going on in the world, but be aware of what else is going on around you, and that is what the song is all about essentially. JK: There’s a great song on In Search Of The Lost Chord by Ray Thomas, and of course, sadly, we lost Ray last year. And you stayed in touch with Ray after he decided to retire from the Moodies due to ill health, so it must be bittersweet performing Ray’s song "Legend Of A Mind" as a tribute to Ray on your forthcoming live dates. JL: As you know, I met Ray Thomas when I was 15. I think we had met on a bus and I had learned a few songs on the guitar, and I had seen Ray singing in a skiffle band at the local youth club. So I said to him, "Aren’t you that guy who sings in that band at the youth club?" And he said, "Yes, I’m Ray Thomas." And I said, "I’m John Lodge. I pay a few chords. Shall we form a band?" (Laughs) and we did. He knew a drummer, I knew a guitarist, and that is how El Riot and The Rebels came about, and we worked together for the next four years before the Moodies started. What was wonderful for me was that his parents and my parents became friends, so we did become a big family. They used to go on holidays together and Ray’s children and my children became friends too, so something magical happened between us all from that meeting on the bus. I even got Ray to use my doctor after he left the Moody Blues because he lived only a mile and a half from where I live. And when I was making my solo album, 10,000 Light Years Ago, I wrote a song called "Simply Magic", and I realised that it was really like a Moody Blues song and it needed flute. So, I went round to Ray’s house and said, “Listen, I’ve written this 6

song and you have to play flute on it.” So he listened to it and we went into the studio to record Ray’s flute and he said, “We should ask Mike (Pinder)”. I rang Mike in California and asked him to come and play Mellotron on this song and he said yes, which was great for me because it was like the completion of the circle because Mike had briefly been in El Riot and The Rebels too. Anyway, getting back to "Legend of A Mind", before we had been to America though, we had heard a lot about Timothy Leary and we actually got to know Tim really well. He used to come onstage and play tambourine with us. But before we met him, Ray wrote this song called "Legend Of A Mind". In fact, Ray and I shared a flat together and I remember Ray singing the song to me, so I remember when he wrote it. But I thought recently, that song will never be played again by the Moody Blues. So I thought, when I go on tour this year, I was going to play "Legend Of A Mind" to keep Ray’s music alive, because we were an integral part of each other’s lives and we shared so much together, so I really just wanted to keep that music alive. JK: The 10,000 Light Years Ago album was only your second solo album. Your first solo album, Natural Avenue, was released in 1977. So do you think, in hindsight, maybe you should have recorded a few more albums between 1977 and 2015? It is a long time between solo albums, even allowing for your work with the Moodies. JL: Yeah, it’s strange because I recorded Natural Avenue but I never went on the road with that album. And I was really disappointed that I didn’t, both then and now. But the problem was that within a year of releasing that album, we were in the studio with the Moodies recording our comeback album Octave. So that whole album kind of drifted away from my mind and I only revisited that album last year because of a film called Private Lives coming out, which features a song from Natural Avenue called "Say You Love Me". So I listened to the album and thought, I should do some of those songs onstage. I know what you mean when you say I should have done more, but whatever happens, happens, and whatever road you take, that is the one you take. I’m a Moody Blue and I’ll always be a Moody Blue. And I think my energies work well with the Moody Blues and as we went on and got involved with Long Distance Voyager and The Present and all the albums that followed after that, time goes so quickly. So maybe I could have done more but the Moodies did some incredible work during that period. Why I got interested again though is vinyl. 180-gram vinyl came along, and I thought, I want to be part of that, and I thought that 10,000 Light Years Ago was the perfect vehicle for me and vinyl. JK: The Moody Blues, in fairness, were very successful when you came back with Octave, The Present, Sur La Mer and The Other Side Of Life. And there are not many bands who could do that after a five year hiatus following Seventh Sojourn. You went right back in at the top, so no entry level gigs for you. And once again, it must be very gratifying to you, Justin, and Graeme, that so many people still want to see the Moody Blues and hear those songs.

7

JL: 2018 was an incredible year because we did the Moody Blues Cruise, we were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and we did an incredible tour of America, from which the live album Days of Future Passed Live came. We then finalised it at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas for three weeks. It is a huge venue and to do three sold out weeks there was just amazing. You have to pinch yourself sometimes and say to yourself, “How did this happen?” But it did, and it’s fantastic that it did, and it’s fantastic that it continues. I’ve no idea why, but there you go. JK: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a funny one, because some bands say it is not important and yet, what it does is really recognise the longevity of the band and the work the band has done. Is that how you feel about it? JL: Yes, I do. When we were nominated, I got a phone call on a Friday night from my agent and he said, “You’ve been nominated.” And I said, “Oh, that’s fabulous.” I never really gave it much thought because I thought the Hall of Fame was an American institution, and it’s always great to be nominated and recognised for something in a country where you are an alien, and to be nominated was fantastic, but I never thought much about it until the fan vote started and people were telling me, "John! You’ve almost got a million votes!" And I thought, all these people have come out and put the effort in to vote for us, and it gave me a real inner pride, to be honest, and humility. When the day came and we were at the induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the concert and the television show, it came home to me just how important it actually was, and not just important for me and the Moodies and the fans, but also the family and friends who could all take pride and be a part of it. I thought of all my mates when I was 15, and they would be carrying my guitar into the local pub because none of us were really allowed in as we were underage. And if they carried a guitar in they could get in as well! (laughs) And I thought of all my mates saying, "Hey, my mate John Lodge has just got into the Hall of Fame." One of my mates actually texted to me and said,” Not bad for a kid from a council house in Brummie!” And I thought, yeah, it’s not bad really, is it? From a personal point of view, Buddy Holly is my guy. I saw Buddy Holly in Birmingham Town Hall in 1958. I’ve still got the programme. So here I am in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and I’m standing shoulder to shoulder with Buddy Holly and I’m thinking, how could you ever believe that? You could never dream of something like that and yet it happened.

JK: The upcoming tour then? A selection of Moody Blues songs and your own, which do admittedly sit well together. JL: I’m trying to put a set together which is like a Moody Blues concert but with my songs in there too. It is important because as I said earlier, I am a Moody Blue and always will be, so when someone comes to a John Lodge concert, I hope they take something with them and I hope they have experienced something that’s emotionally turned them on. https://johnlodge.com/ http://www.moodybluestoday.com/ https://www.facebook.com/johnlodgemusic/ https://twitter.com/joh JOHN LODGE: LIVE FROM BIRMINGHAM – THE 10,000 LIGHT YEARS TOUR DVD/CD box set, 180g Double Red Vinyl, & download via Pledge Music, Amazon and iTunes. Settled Status for EU workers As part of the government’s post-Brexit plans European workers currently living in the UK will be able to apply for settled status in 2019, allowing them to remain indefinitely following the end of the transition period in 2021. To attain settled status individuals must be able to prove they have been living in the UK for 5 years by 31 December 2020. Meanwhile, those who fail to meet this requirement can apply for temporary status, allowing them to remain until they have accrued enough residency to be granted settled status. "Businesses are going to have to make sure that this is managed correctly so that the relevant employees feel secure for them and if appropriate their families. Some organisations are also offering to pay the fees for settled status so that they can be sure they have the appropriate workforce going forward. For those who are keen to provide their EU workers with confirmation of these rights, we can provide a letter outlining the UK’s settlement scheme." comments Matthew from Consensus HR. Gender pay gap reporting Private sector organisations with 250 or more employees will again be required to publish their gender pay gap figures on 4 April 2019, whilst public organisations will need to do the same by 30 March. Although many organisations will be reporting for the second time, this year will be the true test as figures are expected to be heavily scrutinised in order to determine whether efforts to address any significant pay disparity highlighted in the previous year have been successful. "Our argument in relation to this, is why wait even if you have a workforce of under 250 or more employees? Keeping a simple spreadsheet when recruiting and documenting key KPI's will ensure equality for all areas from sex, age, race etc are kept and the appropriate action taken if needed." comments Matthew from Consensus HR. YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS Is your estate ready for the Probate Fee Hike ? Despite last minute demands for more consultation, the Government looks set to introduce increased Probate Fees from 1st April. This is the court fee paid to obtain the Grant of Probate when dealing with a deceased’s estate. The Grant is needed by the bereaved family members to have the authority to gather in and deal with the monies, property and assets of the estate. Because the fee has to be paid BEFORE the Grant of Probate is given, the family will not have access to the estate’s monies to pay for it – they will have to find the monies to cover the fee themselves, before being refunded by the estate at a later date. At present, the family only have to find a flat rate of £215 – regardless of the value of the estate. This is because it is a fee for the court’s service, rather than a tax. Higher value estates will pay more in Inheritance Tax – which is completely separate. The new fees will arguably provide a saving for a small number of estates as if the assets are worth less than £50,000 you are exempt from the court fee - whereas at present only estates worth less than £5,000 are exempt. However, for the vast majority of estates the new fees will range from £250 upwards and for some will mean a disproportionally high increase as follows: Value of the Estate From £50,000 up to £300,000 From £300,000 up to £500,000 From £500,000 up to £1 million From £1 million up to £1.6 million From £1.6 million up to £2 million More than £2 million

New Fee £250 £750 £2,500 £4,000 £5,000 £6,000

Increase Increase of £35 Increase of £535 Increase of £2,285 Increase of £3,785 Increase of £4,785 Increase of £5,785

Many feel that having to try and find such sums at a time when a family is grieving is unreasonable. Unless there is a last-minute U-turn by the Government, the best advice will have to be – Be Prepared. If you know your loved ones could find it hard to pay the increased fee on your death consider putting monies aside for it now – for example in accounts they will be able to access without waiting for the Grant of Probate, or via a life policy put in trust for them. If you want more advice on how to prepare for the fee increase, or just a general review of your will, please contact our Private Client Team at Curwens. Russell Grant's Monthly Horoscopes April ARIES (March21st-April20th) CANCER (June22nd-July23rd)

You want to take on a different role at the beginning of April, but there are people around you hoping to block your path. The New Moon on the 5th makes you fully aware of the conservative attitudes and stuffy restraints that are holding you captive. If you are going to strike in another direction, there will be consequences. You may be at the point that you do not care. If that's the case, get ready for some fireworks. There are people around you who will try making life very difficult for you. You have friends in high places. On the 19th, someone close to you and trusted will come to your rescue. Accept their offer to expand your horizons. Let your friend set you up in a training course. Getting a license or certificate in a growing field will allow you to live anywhere in the world. This is exactly the kind of change you want.

On the 5th, the New Moon will attract a problematic career opportunity. Although you're eager to advance, you don't want to work with a famously toxic executive. Instead of subjecting yourself to their abuse, hold out for a better offer. You have tremendous leadership ability. It may be better to open your own business than work for someone else. Your path will become clearer after the 19th, when the Full Moon will help you sew up a real estate matter. Buying or selling a piece of property will cultivate stability. You may decide to launch a business from your home. Working for yourself will solve so many problems. You'll be able to choose your work associates. It will be possible to spend more quality time with your family. There's the added bonus of creating an office environment that lifts your spirits and lets your creative juices flow freely. April is your chance to strike out on your own.

TAURUS (April21st-May21st) Working behind the scenes will be stressful at the beginning of April. The New Moon on the 5th finds you butting heads with an expert who wants to take all the credit for your hard work. Staying in this situation will make it impossible to advance. It's time to start looking for a better situation. Stop telling yourself this is your only option. It may be necessary to upgrade your skills or transition into a different industry, but this will be much better than staying in a toxic environment. On the 19th, the Full Moon will help you wrap up a work project that attracts lots of favourable publicity. Use this achievement to move into a better job. Working for a commission will be better than taking a flat salary. It's time you were paid for your superior performance. Don't be afraid of meeting April's challenges. They have been sent to move you into a better position.

LEO (July24th-August23rd) Legal problems could block your path at the beginning of the month. The New Moon on the 5th warns against breaking the rules. You'll fare much better colouring inside the lines than defying authority. The last thing you want is to lose your job because you didn't want to follow procedure. If you are hit with a lawsuit, think about settling out of court. This will be far preferable than going through the time, frustration and expense of a trial. On the 19th, the Full Moon will prompt you to put some newly acquired skills to use. Your knowledge will attract a creative opportunity. If you're offered a teaching job, take it. You'll enjoy working with students who are eager to learn from you. Don't worry if you have to take a pay cut. Your earnings will improve as you gain more and more teaching experience. Having a job you enjoy is more precious than gold.

GEMINI (May22nd-June21st) Cracks are beginning to appear in your social circle. A stressful New Moon on the 5th warns against lending or borrowing money. Coming to a troubled person's rescue won't resolve their problems. This troubled person has to answer for their behaviour. Don't feel pressured to pay a fine or cover a bill. You have better things to do with your hardearned money. If you're drowning in debt, talk to a debt management agency. There are many groups and organisations dedicated to helping people in your situation. If you play your cards right, you can consolidate your bills into one monthly payment and possibly eliminate the interest rate. On the 19th, the Full Moon will showcase your creative talent. You'll have a chance to sell your handiwork for a handsome profit. While this may not be a stable source of income, it will bring in some much-needed extra cash at the end of April.

VIRGO (August24th-September23rd) It will be difficult to get your fair share from a joint financial account. On the 5th, the New Moon will put strain on relationships bound by money. If you're embroiled in a custody battle, you'll have to fight to get funds for a child's wellbeing. To protect your interests, it may be best to get a job that can sustain you through this difficult period. Getting training in a cutting-edge field will help you find a lucrative position that allows you to work independently. It will also help you hold out for resources that are rightfully yours. It's easy to bargain when you're not backed into a corner. The Full Moon on the 19th will improve your economic situation. Buying or selling a piece of property will put you in a much stronger position. If you don't have money for a down payment, a generous relative will come to your rescue.

12

LIBRA (September24th-October23rd)

Resist the temptation to come to their rescue. The only way your loved one will reform is if they are forced to accept the consequences of their actions. Are you dealing with someone who has a substance abuse problem? It's time to issue an ultimatum. You can no longer maintain this relationship if they're going to keep using. On the 19th, the Full Moon marks an important career milestone. You could be given a rise, promotion or both. Have you been unemployed? You might be offered a new role that offers a greater measure of independence. You'll enjoy calling the shots for a change.

The New Moon on the 5th creates tension in your personal life. If you're in a relationship, your other half will embarrass you with their wild and rebellious ways. You resent having to apologise for their boorish behaviour. Ultimately, you have very different needs. Unless you can find a way to live together in harmony, it may be better to part ways. Are you single? Instead of looking for a partner who will impress your family, seek someone who will make you happy. Trying to satisfy other people's expectations will only lead to unhappiness. The Full Moon on the 19th further emphasises the importance of satisfying your own needs. Use this opportunity to take a college course for pleasure, go on a short trip or finish an important project. Satisfying your intellectual curiosity will strengthen your self-esteem. The second half of April invites you to stop expecting others to satisfy your needs. Seek to please yourself instead.

AQUARIUS (January21st-February19th) On the 5th, the New Moon will create some tension in your personal life. Angry words will be exchanged on social media, making you defensive and angry. Someone who has been posing as your friend could be exposed as your enemy. It will be tempting to get revenge. Don't let feelings of bitterness and betrayal consume you. It's much wiser to pour your energy into people and relationships that support and sustain you. The Full Moon on the 19th might find you returning from a trip, collecting a diploma or publishing some written work. Don't be surprised when your popularity soars as a result. Use your connections to realise a lifelong dream. You're tired of letting negative people drag you down. Shake off the setbacks, set a lofty goal and do everything in your power to reach it. The final days of April will help you conquer some stubborn demons.

SCORPIO (Oct 24th-Nov 22nd) A work assignment you receive in early April will be difficult to complete. That's because you'll be getting conflicting signals from your colleagues. Things will be especially tense near the 5th, when a stressful New Moon causes a clash of egos. Some people will ask you to do perform tasks a certain way and others will denigrate your methods. You have no intention of getting drawn into a power struggle. To gain some clarity, talk to your employer. Don't do any work until you receive a clear set of instructions. Are you in charge? It's time to put an end to all the in-fighting and back stabbing. On the 19th, the Full Moon urges you to take a break. Sneaking off to a private hideaway will allow you to reflect on where your direction. Finding a more rewarding line of work will relieve stress. Opportunities involving education, travel and publishing are especially worthwhile.

PISCES (February20th-March20th) A moneymaking opportunity on the 5th has strings attached, due to the challenged New Moon. You might have to prove yourself to an unfriendly group that doesn't want you to succeed. Instead of trying to live up to their expectations, it may be better to look for another job. You're a highly creative person who can't thrive in a forbidding atmosphere. Money from an investment, insurance refund or legal settlement will arrive on or around the 19th. That's when the Full Moon strengthens your financial situation. Use this windfall to advance your career. Starting your own business is a distinct possibility. Alternatively, you may decide to work as a free agent. Being able to pick and choose your clients will be a much better arrangement than remaining tied to a single employer. The second half of April could bring the professional freedom you crave. Conventional arrangements don't work for you; venture off the beaten path.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23rd-Dec21st) On the 5th, the New Moon creates drama in your love life. Financial difficulties could be taking a toll on your union. Instead of sniping at each other about money matters, go to a counsellor. It will be easier to work out these problems with an objective third party. If you're single, it may be because you worry that a relationship will cramp your style. You'd rather live a ragtag existence than feel responsible for a romantic partner. Think carefully how this attitude is undermining your happiness. The Full Moon on the 19th is ideal for attending a festive occasion. There's a good chance you'll meet someone who finds you utterly charming. By joining forces, you could start a business, showcase your creative work or assume an exciting new role. Instead of resigning yourself to being a loner at the end of the month, reach out to those who can help realise your dreams.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22nd-Jan 20th) The New Moon on the 5th creates tension on the home front. Everyone is resisting your authority. You won't be able to rein in someone who is intent on going their own way. Instead of trying to shield this relative from trouble, let them go.

10 Tell-tale Signs You’re in a Great Cheese Shop Whether you’re looking for Brie, Cheddar, or something you’ve never heard of, cheese shopping should be the highlight of your week. Unfortunately, we’ve all had those unrewarding experiences where we walk out of a cheese shop feeling like a cultural degenerate; or, we get home and realize that the cheese we bought was overpriced and underwhelming. Want to avoid these woes? Look for stellar cheese shops with smart staff and stinky selections. Here are 10 sure-fire signs you’ve come to the right place. IT SMELLS LIKE CHEESE IN THERE. A good cheese shop carries a range of cheeses, including cheeses that smell to high heaven. Ergo, even if you don’t love stinky cheeses, their presence is a good sign. You’ll find a wider range of new treasures at the smellier shops. CHEESES ARE CUT TO ORDER. Cheese is freshest straight from the wheel. Once it’s cut, it quickly starts to degrade, both texturally and flavour-wise, and nobody has time for that. The shops that care most about you walking out with the best-quality cheese will either be entirely cut to order, or offer you the option of cutting down pieces that are prewrapped. THE STORE IS STAFFED BY HUMANS. For every 30 cheeses sold in a shop, there should be at least one human there to walk you through all those cheeses. What the heck is L’Etivaz? Sure, you could Google it, but if a cheese shop is serious about deliciousness, it’ll make sure to have someone there to explain. NO ONE MAKES YOU FEEL STUPID. Unless you were raised by French aristocrats, you may not know what a tomme is. That is fine. Your job isn’t to be the expert; your job is to find something that you’re excited about, with the help of your cheesemonger. If anyone working in the cheese shop makes you feel embarrassed for not being a cheese expert, march right out of that shop and never return. CHEESEMONGERS ARE HAPPY TO DO THE WORK. That ripe, gooey wheel of soft cheese you’re eying may be perfect for a party tonight, but not ideal for the brunch you want to throw this upcoming weekend. Luckily, it’s not your job to know the difference! Your cheesemonger should ask you questions like when you plan on serving the cheese, around how many people will be coming, and what you’ll be drinking. Buying cheese to pair with Netflix and

comfy pants is different from buying cheese to serve at your boss’s upcoming dinner party, and either way, your cheesemonger should be able to steer you in the right direction. YOU GET TO TASTE BEFORE YOU BUY. Cheese is made from milk, and milk is made from cows, which eat plants all day. Depending on what plants are in season, the milk might taste different, which may make the cheese different from the last time you had it. It may even vary by batch — last week, the cows were outside in the sun, and this week, the cows were inside the barn, taking shelter from the rain and eating hay. As a result, their milk will taste different. Even if you’re buying a favourite cheese that you have all the time, it’s worth giving it a taste to make sure it’s what you’re looking for today. PAIRINGS ARE SUGGESTED. While most mongers understand that their customers aren’t stopping by to spend their life savings, they also understand that cheese is an experience to be enjoyed, and that usually means having some other goodies to go along with it. Typically, that means bread or crackers, maybe honey, or perhaps a jar of local pickled vegetables. A good monger will suggest pairings right away — if they don’t, gently ask, “What else would be tasty with this cheese?” YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO EXPAND YOUR COMFORT ZONE. Sure, Brie is a treat, but have you tried Cremeux de Bourgogne? What about Harbison? A good monger will understand what you’re asking for, make sure you get it, and try to introduce you to something else you’ll love. When your job is selling joy in dairy form, how could you not? YOU LEAVE A BIT HAPPIER THAN WHEN YOU CAME IN. Listen, you just spent your hard-earned money on something that wasn’t strictly necessary for your survival. (Admittedly, sometimes cheese does feel necessary for survival.) If that experience didn’t spark some joy, someone messed up, and it wasn’t you. You should leave the shop feeling like you just had a delicious adventure. The Cheese Plate in Buntingford is such a shop. For more information on delicious cheeses and accompaniments go to www.thecheeseplate.co.uk or at 26 High Street Buntingford.

IT’S TIME FOR THE PIES TO SHINE! In Britain we just love them! Whether it’s filled with meats, vegetables or something sweet, we just can’t wait to sink our teeth into a delicious homemade or locally sourced treats. Now those new year resolutions are starting to feel like a distant memory, we can just get stuck into some fantastic wholesome British pies. The best thing about pie is that there are so many ways to have pie. Sweet pie, chicken pie, beef and ale pie, fish pie, cottage pie, the hand-held pie, vegetable pie, pork pie, creamy based, gravy based, tomato based or sweet based. There is no doubt about it but there is a pie for everyone. Quick Pie Facts: 1. The ancient Egyptians ate pies filled with figs or dates 3,000 years ago. 2. The oldest known pie recipe was for a rye-crusted goat’s cheese and honey pie in Rome 2,000 years ago. 3. Pies first appeared in Britain in the 12th century, usually spelt ‘pye’ and containing meat. Fruit pies did not appear until the 16th century. 4. The crust of the pie was then most commonly known as a ‘coffyn of paste’. The base was a rectangular box of pastry. 5. The descriptive words most likely to precede ‘pie’ are ‘apple’, ‘American’, ‘mince’ and ‘humble’, with ‘pumpkin’ and ‘meat’ sharing fifth place. 6. Australia eats the most amount of pie per capita. Which gives you another good reason to head down under for a holiday. BigBarn is also brimming over with fantastic pie producers and brilliant delis and farm shops making their own. Take a look at the marketplace to track down fantastic suppliers who you can order from online, or search the local food map for a list of wonderful producers and retailers near you Or, if you like making your own pies, then search www.bigbarn.co.uk to discover fantastic places to source the best quality meat and vegetables for your own perfect pastries.

It takes a lot of work to be Natural So what really is a natural wine? It’s not just being Organic!! Natural wines have to come from an Organic or a bio sustainable vineyard, a vineyard that is not using chemical fertilisers. This of course becomes the tricky part of keeping the bugs at bay, one method vineyards use is to introduce ladybirds in their thousands to combat this issue, the second and main part which is key is the natural fermentation so wild yeast. Some vineyards may start fermentation with natural yeast and sometimes add a bit of locally sourced yeast to help the fermentation along, but fundamentally it’s a natural fermentation. There has to be no manipulation of the must, no adjustments with any chemicals, no added sugar or enzymes - basically nothing to impact the fermentation process: minimal or no fining, and the big one! no (or a very small amount of) Sulphites. Now all this work can often mean the cost is higher and the results are inconsistent so proceed with caution. The lack of Sulphites or no Sulphites will mean the wine has a shorter shelf life, up to 3 years maximum to be safe. Wine makers add Sulphites as a preservative, without it the wine will just go off. Over the years of searching for good natural wines, I have had much joy in the Bordeaux region and surrounding areas of France. The area produces a rich fullbodied style which seems to have a good level of consistency, to an otherwise very inconsistent wine (Natural) and for this reason Cavavin have managed to source two Bordeaux’s Chateau Suau, Semper Viva 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14% vol £17.50 This charming, frank and forward wine develops aromas of red and black fruit, as well as a delicate vanilla note. In the mouth, it offers a beautiful, silky and intense material. A wine of precision that we are proud of.

Buzet, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet-franc 14% vol £12.50 Buzet presents a very intense violet colour. The explosive nose is on red fruits and black berries. The attack in the mouth is quite powerful with tannins well present, but already coated. Beautiful length in the mouth, with a lot of fruit. Balanced wine, but it will be necessary to monitor the evolution (age) due to the lack of protection provided by sulphites.
