Chat with the cast of Sleeping Beauty this Christmas at The Grove Theatre, Dunstable

The Sticks sat down and chatted with some of the cast of this year’s panto. Sally Lindsay (SL), who played Shelley Unwin in Coronation Street, (she will take no nonsense as the wicked fairy godmother Carabosse). After Coronation Street, Sally starred on screen in series including Mount Pleasant, Open All Hours and Scott & Bailey, as well as appearing as a regular panellist on Loose Women. CBeebies presenter Rebecca Keatley (RK) is sure to shine brightly as Fairy Moonbeam. A popular character in family entertainment, Rebecca is best known for her energetic and bubbly role in CBeebies’ Justin’s House and Swashbuckle, but more recently CBeebies fans will be watching her on the hit children’s TV show Let’s Play. She is also the narrator on CBeebies’ Time for School. My Family actor, Ian Jones (IJ) as Jangles, Will Kenning (WK) as Nurse Nellie and Jemma Carlisle (JC) in the role of Beauty complete the line-up. How many panto’s have you done? SL: This is only my second; I got the bug when I was offered a panto two years ago at the Liverpool Empire, which is massive and I thought why not, never done it before. I have always wanted to but I have always been filming over Christmas for some reason and then I had babies and they get in the way a bit. The Empire was fantastic and then I got the offer in for this year, I thought why not. It is not far as I am based in London and I live down the road from John Partridge. RK: This will be my fifth and I think I have been typecast as the fairy. IJ: My first was in 2003 and have had 2 Christmas’s off so this will be my 12th panto WK: This is going to be my 12th one.

4

JC: I have done panto every year since I was 8 years old as a dancer progressing to principle girl. Do you remember your first one? SL: It was interesting as it was so different to what I expected. I don’t know what I expected, I guess like it would be a play with some songs but it is not - it is a different talent altogether, you have got to give your everything twice or three times a day. You do feel responsible because you think this is a lot of money for normal families to pay out, so you have to give them the best show you can and that’s the thing I like about it. RK: I used to panto back home in Wales when I was a little girl; I used to dance ballet and tap - very basic. IJ: Mine was Dick Whittington and the Grand Opera House in Belfast (although I lived between Luton and Dunstable) and I was playing Winkle the ships mate. WK: Yes I do - I was Little John. I am very tall in fact; I am 6 foot 6 inches tall. It was at Bury St Edmunds in 2003. This is the 4th year as a dame; I was dame at the New Woolsey in Ipswich for 3 years. JC: yes it was Babes in the Wood and I played one of the babes What does Panto mean to you? RK: it is a time for people to come together, it signals Christmas. IJ: It is a packed schedule but it is good because it provides momentum and energy especially the part I play as I jump around like an idiot. It has brought the magic of Christmas back which I lost, when you get to a certain age and mum and dad are buying you pants and socks for Christmas. WK: It is a magic first experience of theatre. JC: Because I have always done it, it is Christmas to me, an exciting time. What are you going to bring to the role and show? SL: I was told that the best way to play a wicked character is to think of a grumpy Shirley Bassey, so a posh grumpy Shirley Bassey it is going to be. RK: Obviously a little touch of magic, sparkleyness and a little bit of comedy, keep it light hearted and fun. IJ: Lots of silliness, basically it is my chance to be a kid again, I see nothing wrong it that at all WK: A little bit of silliness, a bit of anarchy. The show will have some great set pieces, it has a full on water scene where Jangles, Ian’s character and I get caught in a plumbing nightmare and everyone gets very, very wet. JC: I might sleep through most of it!!!!!!!!

5

Have you worked with any of the cast before? SL: No, I know John Partridge and have seen him in panto before. RK: Do you know what I have - with the lovely Jemma Carlisle in St Albans a couple of years ago. IJ: No sadly not WK: No I have not but I have worked with the producers, Paul and Emily, a number of times but Rebecca is on the telly constantly in our house as I have a 4 and 1 year old. JC: Yes, Rebecca Keatley What does Christmas mean to you? SL: Christmas is about my boys, I have 7 year old twins. It is about keeping that dream alive and waiting for Father Christmas to come. They also love panto and 2 years ago they wanted to come every night, they did come twice a week for three weeks. IJ: I have two children, a 2 year old and an 11 year old so for me it is time to spend with them and the wife obviously, they are all coming up from Cardiff, where we live now over the Christmas period and coming to see the show. It all about making it as magical for them as I can. WK: It will mean a lot to me, as it will be the first year my boy can see a panto with me in it, he has seen one before and when they get to that 4-5 mark they start understanding the story a bit more. What will you be doing on Christmas day? SL: We have my Mum and Step-Dad coming down from Manchester and we are going to our local pub in London. They put this amazing dinner on and Father Christmas comes out, so I will be with my family. RK: I have not even thought about it yet, I might go back to Wales, depends on what time the show finishes otherwise I will spend the time in Dunstable or London to see my friends there. IJ: Sleeping!!! I will have the kids so it’s going to be 100 mile an hour on the day like it always is. WK: I will be a home with the family because that’s the 24 hours you get off and I live locally In Leighton Buzzard. What would you like to receive as a Christmas present? SL: just a lovely family Christmas for my boys RK: I don’t need anything so spending time with lovely people and lots of love.

6

IJ: I have not given it any thought, my wife wants a hot tub, not sure if she wants me in it, I think she would prefer Tom Hardy in it! WK: I am in to cameras and film making so maybe a new lens or maybe a little gizmo to go with my camera kit plus a good healthy time as last Christmas everyone was sick JC: Every year I have asked very nicely for a dog and I have yet to get one. What is your favourite Christmas song? SL: It is the suite from The Love for Three Oranges by Prokofiev. RK: Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas is You IJ: I am going to be greedy and have 2, one which a lot of people go for which is Fairytale of New York by The Pogues - that’s a great song and Shakin’ Stevens – Merry Christmas Everyone, to me they are classics. WK: Slade and Merry Christmas Everybody because it has some grit, it is earthy, mixed with nostalgia and you can’t beat it. JC: I like The Pogues as well. What are your plans for 2018? SL: At the moment it is an open book. I have lots of things that are in the pipeline, I would love to do Blood Brothers, I have been asked before but because of my other commitments I could not do it. RK: More CBeebies and who knows what else. IJ: For me, more of the same. I have been touring all over the UK and Europe with my stand-up comedy show. I am a Lee Evans impersonator which I keep separate from panto. WK: I am an actor/ director and have two short films that I have directed out, so will be promoting those. JC: Straight after panto finishes I am off to New Zealand, my brother lives out there.

Our annual 5 HR tips for your business over Christmas Workplace Christmas parties bring up issues of conduct and discrimination. For example, employees may misbehave, or employers may have to make adjustments to Christmas parties for employees of different religions. Holiday issues also commonly arise at this time. Annual leave requests can be concentrated around the same days, with employers’ plans to open their business during bank holidays often conflicting with employees’ personal plans. With Christmas approaching fast, we have five tips which offer valuable advice for employers: Should employers prepare for the Festive Season? Managers should familiarise themselves with their employer’s policy on Christmas parties or work-related social events. Additionally, employers should consider the option of issuing a statement to employees in advance of a Christmas party or similar work-related event. This statement can remind employees of conduct matters, including the dangers of excess alcohol consumption, and behaviours that could be viewed as harassment. Do employers really need a policy on workplace social events? Yes. Employers should maintain a policy because they have a duty of care towards staff, and as a matter of good practice. The Equality Act 2010 makes employers liable for acts of discrimination, harassment and victimisation carried out by their employees in the course of employment, unless they can show that they took reasonable steps to prevent such acts. Is an employer responsible for what happens at a Christmas party? It is prudent to assume that an employer will be liable. Legislation refers to the term “in the course of employment”. Can employees be disciplined for misconduct after a Christmas party? Yes, if the incident is sufficiently closely connected to work to have had an impact on the working situation. Is it okay to offer a free bar at a Christmas party? A free bar will undoubtedly be a morale booster for staff, but employers need to be aware of the dangers of providing an unlimited free bar. Matthew from Consensus HR comments: “In our experience, Christmas brings a range of HR challenges that employers need to prepare for in order to avoid potential problems but should not mean everyone not having fun.” If you wish to discuss your Companies HR and make sure your all prepared for Christmas, contact us today on 01462 621243 or by email: info@consensushr.com

Employment Law Changes 2018 So what Employment Law changes are planned for 2018? Matthew Pinto-Chilcott of Consensus HR comments “We will see a number of Employment Law changes happening from Gender Pay reporting for all sectors to ensuring that any Payment In Lieu Of Notice (PILON) is taxable. May will see the arrival of the General Data Protection Regulations, which will now include hefty fines for failure to follow (of up to 4% of global turnover) with the future of Grandparental Leave still unknown and whether the Government will pursue the policy.” 30 March 2018 - Gender pay gap reporting for public sector employers: Private and voluntary sector employers in England, Wales and Scotland with at least 250 employees will be required to publish information about the differences in pay between men and women in their workforce, based on a pay bill ‘snapshot’ date of 5 April 2017, under the Equality Act 2010 (Gender Pay Gap Information) Regulations 2017. The first reports must be published by 4 April 2018. Similar reporting requirements apply to larger public sector employers from 31 March 2017 and the first reports are due by 30 March 2018. Provisions under the Northern Irish Employment Act 2016 mirror these, except they also include fines of up to £5,000 for non-compliance, and a requirement to report on ethnicity and disability pay gaps, as well as gender. For more information see our Guide to gender pay gap reporting. April 2018 - Taxation of termination payments: The government plans to make changes to the taxation of termination payments from April 2018. The proposals include: •

removing the distinction between contractual and non-contractual PILONs (payments in lieu of notice) so that all PILONs are taxable and subject to Class 1 NICs ensuring that the first £30,000 of a termination payment remains exempt from income tax and that any payment paid to any employee that relates solely to the termination of the employment continues to have an unlimited employee NICs exemption aligning the rules for income tax and employer NICs so that employer NICs will be payable on payments above £30,000 (which are currently only subject to income tax)

4 April 2018 - Gender pay gap reporting for private sector employers: Private sector employers must publish first reports before this date (with a snapshot date of 5 April 2017). April 2018 – Restricting Employment Allowance for illegal workers: The government plans to introduce a further deterrent to the employment of illegal workers. From April 2018, employers will not be able to claim the Employment Allowance for one year if they have:

9

• • •

hired an illegal worker been penalised by the Home Office exhausted all appeal rights against that penalty.

25 May 2018 - General Data Protection Regulation: The government has confirmed it will be implementing the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which applies to all EU Member States from 25 May 2018, even though the UK is leaving the EU (see the Information Commissioner's blog). The new rules give individuals: • • •

easier access to their own data a ‘right to be forgotten’ a right to know when their data has been hacked.

Organisations will benefit from having: • •

• •

a single set of data protection rules across the EU and one supervisory authority, rather than the current 28. Notifications to supervisory bodies are also being scrapped. But companies may be required to: pay a fine of up to 4% of global turnover if they breach the new rules appoint a data protection officer in certain circumstances.

Exemptions apply for SMEs for whom data processing is not a core business activity, and these employers may also charge a data access fee where requests are 'manifestly unfounded' or 'excessive.' The ICO has a range of information and resources on the new rules, including a 12step guide, and more information is available in our Data protection, surveillance and privacy at work Q&As. June 2018 - EU Trade Secrets Directive: To introduce an EU-wide definition of "trade secret" and provide protections against unlawful acquisitions, use or disclosure. To be confirmed – Grandparental Leave In March 2016, David Cameron’s government restated its intention to extend shared parental leave and pay to working grandparents by 2018. However, a consultation planned for May 2016 did not take place, and Theresa May’s government has yet to indicate whether it intends to pursue the policy.

YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS

Do you have a right to see your Grandchildren? Christmas is a time for family – but some grandparents won’t be seeing their grandchildren this year. Grandparents can sometimes be the forgotten sufferers of the breakdown of a marriage or relationship. If a parent is not seeing their child regularly, then the grandparents will be seeing them even less, if at all. What can grandparents do? If, as a grandparent, you fear losing contact with your grandchildren, you can try a number of proven approaches:•

speak to the parent(s) - explain that no matter what the problems are between them, you do not wish to take sides and that you only want to maintain a strong relationship with your grandchildren.

consider mediation – where an independent mediator will contact the parent(s) on your behalf and invite them to a round table meeting to try and help reach an agreement on what contact you can have with the grandchildren.

draft a letter - if carefully considered, a letter could diffuse the tension of the situation and express clearly why you feel contact with your grandchildren is so important for you and them.

involve a community elder – if you and the parent(s) are part of the same community or religion, consider asking the local priest or someone you all trust to help discussions

If none of the above routes are suitable or work for you, then it may be possible to apply to the Family Court for an order that you get to see your grandchildren. You need permission from the court to make such an application, but this is usually dealt with at the same time. Family Courts increasingly recognise and promote the invaluable role that grandparents have to play in their grandchildren’s lives. If an Order is made, the Court’s powers to enforce those orders have been increased over the years, making it extremely difficult for parents to ignore them. A Court order is therefore a very powerful way to ensure that grandparents can maintain a meaningful and fulfilling relationship with their grandchildren. If this relates to you and you would like more information, then please contact us. You may also want to consider the Grandparents’ Association which can provide a lot of practical support: www.grandparents-association.org.uk Curwens LLP is your local firm of solicitors with specialists in Family and Childcare Law – based in Royston, Hoddesdon, and Enfield. Russell Grant’s Monthly Horoscopes January 2018

Aries (Mar21/Apr20) Home and family should be your primary focus in early January. The Full Moon on the 2nd gives you a lovely opportunity to wrap up a real estate deal, attend a reunion or resolve a relative’s problem. Adopt a low profile during the first half of the month. Spending time out of the spotlight will give you a chance to rest and recuperate from all the holiday festivities that occupied your attention in December. On the 17th, the New Moon presents an exciting career opportunity. Work involving art, luxury goods or cosmetics is especially favoured. You’ll enjoy working for a company that has an element of glamour to it. Upgrading your professional wardrobe is strongly advised. A tasteful Libra will teach you which fashions look best on you. A Lunar Eclipse on the 31st brings the end to a creative project, allowing you to go on a trip you’ve been longing to take.

to your life. If you’ve felt like you’ve been giving everything you have with getting little in return, this is your chance to rectify the matter. Do something nice for yourself. Take some time off work, indulge in some sensual pleasures and put your needs first. By the time the New Moon arrives on the 17th, you’ll be ready to forge a partnership with someone you greatly respect. Joining forces with a creative person will make you feel like you can move mountains. On the 31st, a Lunar Eclipse will give you the courage to walk away from an arrangement that feels more like work than play. Finding a lucrative job that appeals to your artistic side is a strong possibility. Leo (Jul24/Aug23) The Full Moon on the 2nd brings an end to a period of seclusion. Coming out of your shell will be refreshing. Don’t be surprised if you meet someone special on one of your first times back on the social scene. You’ll have to be the aggressor, since the object of your affection is very shy. Are you already in a romantic relationship? Do something special for your amour. A thoughtful gift or loving gesture will make the first half January highly passionate. The New Moon on the 17th is great for starting a new job or health regimen. You’ll be more determined than ever to make success of a demanding routine. Set small, manageable aims over time. Each time you reach a goal, give yourself a small reward. A Fantastic New Art Gallery in Letchworth

To my enjoyment and excitement, the other day I discovered a new art gallery featuring an amazing collection of paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures and textiles has opened in Letchworth with works created by 25 local artists. The founder members of the artistic collective are Dawn Adams, Jill Taylor, Sandy Campbell and Audrey Imber who had the vision for this project which led them to transform the premises into a beautiful gallery space. The aim of The Wynd Gallery is to promote the arts in Letchworth by offering a dynamic programme of group shows every month, as well as exciting solo shows by its artist members throughout the year. They showcase work of the highest standard and visitors will find an array of artwork. Following the success of their first exhibition they now have more great work on display by their gallery artists. With such an eclectic blend of fine art and crafts of the highest quality, there truly is something for every taste. If you haven’t visited the gallery yet, you must, you will not be disappointed! Why not pop over and you are guaranteed to find that something special for Christmas. You can even meet one or more of the artists who work and run the gallery. There are great cafes in the area for you to sit and ponder which great piece of work you want to buy for that special person in your life. The Wynd Gallery is open from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday or go to www.wyndgallery.co.uk or follow them on Facebook to see what new exhibitions they have on.

Create Abundance for the New Year by Janey Lee Grace

What are your hopes and resolutions as we head into a new year, and does your financial health affect your wellbeing? Christmas often leaves us wiped out and we can’t seem to focus on manifesting a healthy, happy and abundant New Year irrespective of what our New Year resolutions are. The reality is many of us are carrying around old limiting beliefs around money and in order to make a fresh start we need to re-set our beliefs around money. Liz Hancock, a Herts. based author and coach who uses a combination of visualization and EFT, says ‘tapping’ on certain acupressure points on the body can calm the nervous system and literally re-wire the brain to feel differently about the issue you are focusing on. It can give you the chance to relax and create the space to think big and be creative which is exactly what we need for a new year. The feelings money invokes within us are all consuming. The stress of not having enough is something many of us are far too familiar with and conversely, if you are ‘rich’, you probably have a lot of stress involved in managing your money, controlling it or maybe a fear of losing it. No-one can ‘magic’ you to be rich, but you can learn the skills and mindset to generate a bigger income, get promoted or grow your business and have ‘enough’ to feel fulfilled. I have been round the houses and back on this one and despite still having a few negative beliefs around money, I do practice gratitude and really do value that I am rich in the currency of friendship at least. Let’s hope that 2018 can be a year where we can change our mindset, believe in ourselves and be healthy happy and financially abundant – now there’s a cool resolution.

Aiden on the Hop - 2017 Round up of Craft Beer What a fantastic year it has been for Craft Beer; I was taken on adventures into the world of tasting and making of this delicious nectar; discovering the enthusiasm of the brewers striving for perfection in their search for flavour and quality. My journey started with a visit to the Mad Squirrel shop in Berkhampsted. A craft beer shop where you can sit and enjoy their delicious brew and then shop for local and international beer and cider to take home; in my opinion, the perfect combination. I also got to experience the brewing process at New River Brewery, where I witnessed the care and attention that goes into their ale. Garden City Brewery based in Letchworth, where I watched the process of beer making from the bar area as they brewed their liquid gold. Summer was a Beer Fest Bonanza, where I attended the Baldock, Hitchin and Hertfordshire Craft Brewers festival in Stevenage. Amazing events run by volunteers and supported by the local branch of The Campaign for Real Ale. 2017 saw Farr Brewery winning the “Best Product” award in the Hertfordshire Life Food and Drink awards.

As the year draws to a close, there is still time to discover the world of Craft beers at St Albans Christmas market where The 3 Brewers can be found every day during December. All in all, this has been a fantastic year for the local craft brewers, Real Ale shops, and festivals. So why not spoil the “Beer, Real Ale and Cider” person in your life this Christmas and purchase some local cheers.

The Perfect Festive Cheeseboard By Sharon Struckman www.whatishootieat.co.uk

Award winning Cheese Monger and international judge, Toby Archer guides us to a perfect festive cheese board. There is nothing more satisfying than ending your Christmas meal with a mouth-watering cheeseboard. Its welcome appearance at the end of a meal signals a time for appreciation, prolonged conversations and plenty of port! You want to create a cheeseboard that offers different styles, textures and flavours for your guests to enjoy. The classic combination of cheddar, stilton and brie has always been popular, as you’ve got a blue, a hard and a soft cheese. Colston Bassett Dairy Stilton is a rich cream colour with blue veining spread throughout. The texture is smooth and creamy with a mellow flavour with no sharp acidic taste from the blue. Melt in the mouth perfection. Cheddar is a great, traditional English cheese, and the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company’s Cave Matured is stored for a year in the heart of Cheddar Gorge creating a unique flavour and texture. The multi award winning Tunworth has a long-lasting sweet, nutty flavour and a creamy texture with a thin wrinkled rind. It’s made by hand with pasteurised whole cows milk, in small batches in Hampshire Cheeses’ purpose-built creamery. Old Winchester from The Courtyard Dairy in North Yorkshire is a dry and hard cheese, reminiscent of young parmesan, with a distinctive nuttiness; this will add a punch to your board. Balance is the name of the game with a cheeseboard, so include something creamy and soft to act as a counterweight to the blue and hard cheeses. Goats’ cheese is a good option as more people are developing a palate for it. Serve your cheese with traditional accompaniments such as grapes and other fruit, nuts, jams and chutneys. You can also add some decadent additions such as pears in calvados or figs steeped in cognac. When putting so much thought and effort into your cheese selection, it’s best to use unflavoured crackers; you want to let the cheese do all the talking. Why a Local Free Range Turkey, or Goose, is Best For Christmas What better way is there to celebrate Christmas than get the family round the table for a big feast? A great feast needs a centre piece and a great story. The supermarket ‘frozen section’ pales into insignificance compared to buying a real, traditional breed, slow growing, naturally fed, dry plucked, hung, free range, or open-barn reared, turkey from the local farmer. And the story about seeing the farm and meeting the farmer. ‘OK for the rich’ I hear you say. Well yes, a real turkey will cost more, but per person, be much cheaper than going out to a pub or restaurant, and twice as tasty. So why more expensive? Your cheap supermarket turkey/goose/chicken will have all been reared intensively, with thousands of birds crammed in sheds and fed on a special, scientifically crafted, food to make them grow as fast as possible. When processed, a machine uses hot water to remove the last feathers that other birs have not plucked out. And they can’t be hung because the hot water has often forced bacteria under the skin. Flavour or texture are of no interest, the goal is minimising cost. In complete contrast, putting animal welfare aside, the goal of your traditional turkey producer is to produce a meat with great flavour and texture. This is achieved by opting for a breed of turkey that grows slowly, is allowed to roam and eat grass and herbs, together with natural feed. Then at processing time get dry plucked, by hand, and hung to improve flavour and texture. So to find a great Turkey, Goose, Guinea fowl, or Cockerel this Christmas use our special Turkey map to find your local free range turkey direct from the producer. In most parts of the country you can order now for Christmas delivery. Or to get ‘the story’ you could pay now and collect your turkey and meet the farmer. BigBarn exists to help consumers find better food and encourage farmers grow food for local people. If we all saw how our food was produced making the right choices would be much easier so please use our local food map to find other great food and drink around your post code. You can also use BigBarn to get all the best trimmings and some brilliant presents. Simply click to view our special discount code page and browse 70+ artisan producers offering 10% or more discount. 3 of the Best Movies of 2017 by Sonny Etchell

Logan Lucky: Logan Lucky is about two brothers who attempt a heist during a big NASCAR race along with the help of Joe Bang (Daniel Craig). Logan Lucky is a career defining role for Channing Tatum who is unrecognizable as Jimmy Logan, a construction worker who gets fired from his job at the start of the film. Tatum continues to show his ability and versatility as an actor in what is one of his best performance yet. Also great are Adam Driver as Jimmy’s brother Clyde and Daniel Craig as the incarcerated criminal Joe Bang. Logan Lucky is an utterly refreshing movie and a revitalization to the heist genre from Steven Soderbergh. More people should have seen it so do yourself a favour and enjoy this fun, classic feeling heist flick. Spiderman: Homecoming: It may the 6th Spiderman film but it’s a film that will have you smiling from start to finish. Tom Holland is the third actor to portray the beloved Marvel superhero and is a great fit for the role. Michael Keaton is at his best as the villainous ‘Vulture’, a menacing character that, like all the best villains, you can empathise with. Homecoming is a hugely entertaining movie, with breath-taking action sequences including a Washington Monument scene and an action scene on a ferry. However, while not a fault of the film itself, Homecomings trailer was far too revealing and spoiled some moments that would have been more impactful had everyone not seen them coming from watching the trailer. Homecoming is definitely the funniest Spider Man movie to date and may be one the funniest Marvel movie too. The movie is full of laughs, largely due to some great side characters including Peter Parkers aunt, Aunt May, his friend Ned, Jon Favreau’s characters and Robert Downey JR’s Iron Man. The Lego Batman Movie: No one expected the first Lego movie to be as charming, funny and visually brilliant as it was but its deserved success is what led to another LEGO film, the equally as good and underappreciated LEGO Batman Movie. The LEGO Batman Movie is a dream for any fan of Batman, hardcore or casual. The film retains all the greatness of the first Lego Movie, with beautifully and thoughtfully crafted animation with an unbelievable attention to detail. It is also packed full of jokes and references about Batman as a character and its history from the early comics to the movies. The voice of Will Arnett is perfect for Lego batman and the rest of the cast including Michael Cera as Robin, Ralph Fiennes as Alfred and Zach Galifianakis as a hilarious version of Joker. If you missed it, be sure to seek out this excellent animated movie that may even please adults more than kids.

Panto Time Part 2

Mirror, mirror on the wall, which is the greatest panto of them all? Snow White of course! This Christmas, Rhodes Arts Complex in association with Phoenix Theatre Arts present, in what will be a first for the well-established partnership, the classic fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The production has been in development for over 4 months and Phil Dale (Artistic Director at Rhodes Arts Complex and Director of the production), who also takes the role of “The Henchman”, is sure that once again the venue will raise the bar when it comes to the annual festive family treat. He said of the production “One of the reasons I have veered away from Snow White for panto is the dilemma of how to cast the dwarfs. This year the concept just seemed perfect and I hope it will be one to remember for years to come”. Continuing in the tradition of using top quality performers from London’s West End the role of “Muddles” goes to Terel Nugent. Terel has been working in the business from a very young age, having trained at The Sylvia Young Theatre School. His many musical theatre credits include The Wizard of Oz (Palladium), Hairspray (Shaftesbury), Ragtime (Piccadilly), Porgy & Bess (Savoy) and most recently The Book of Mormon (Prince of Wales) and Beautiful - The Carole King Musical (Aldwych). Other theatre includes The Enchanted Pig and the The Human Comedy (Young Vic) and The Royal Hunt of The Sun (National Theatre) among many others. Also starring is Bishop’s Stortford’s own Abbie Middleton-Evans, last seen treading the boards at Rhodes Arts Complex as Marie in the Critically Acclaimed Phoenix production of West Side Story. A host of fantastic local talent makes up a cast well versed in the magic of pantomime.
