Exclusive Interview with Giovanni Pernice

Giovanni Pernice is an Italian dancer and choreographer, best known as a professional dancer on the BBC One dance series Strictly Come Dancing. Pernice is the Italian Open Latin Dance Champion and is the current Guinness World Record holder for Jive Kicks and Flicks, as well as Charleston Swivels. Giovanni was born in Sicily. At the age of 14 he moved to Bologna to concentrate on dance. He chose to become a dancer after watching Come Dancing a television show about ballroom dance competitions. Specialising in Latin style, Giovanni has won a number of competitions including the Italian 2012 Championships. In 2015 he appeared as a professional dancer on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing for its thirteenth series. He was partnered with former Coronation Street actress and model, Georgia May Foote. They reached the finals of the competition, but finished as joint runners-up alongside Kellie Bright and her professional partner, Kevin Clifton. They also participated as partners for the 2016 Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour. In 2016 he returned to Strictly Come Dancing for its fourteenth series. He was partnered with television presenter Laura Whitmore. They were eliminated Week 7 in a dance-off with Ore Oduba and Joanne Clifton, the Series 14 champions, and finished in 9th place. In 2017, Giovanni returned to Strictly Come Dancing for its fifteenth series as a professional dancer. His celebrity partner was Debbie McGee, television and radio presenter and former ballet dancer. They reached the finals of the competition, but finished as joint runners-up alongside Alexandra Burke, and her professional partner Gorka Márquez, and Gemma Atkinson, and her professional partner Aljaz Skorjanec. Giovanni took time out to talk to The Sticks ahead of his tour ‘Born to Win’ How did you get interested in dancing? It started when I was 7 when I watched a programme on the television with my mum and dad called “Come Dancing” and I saw the chemistry between the boys and the girls. I fell in love with it and said to my dad “I want to be around the girls all my life” so that is the reason I started. When did you realise how good you were? When I was born!!!! 4

Is that why the show is called “Born to Win”? Of course, no the reason the show is called that is because I always say when you wake up in the morning and you’re smiling I always say you are born to win; so that’s why. What is your favourite dance? It is the Jive as it is cheeky and so fast and it is like my personality I would say. I am the current Guinness World Record holder for jive kicks and flicks, performing 55 in 30 seconds in a challenge held in December 2016. The next year, in December 2017, I broke the world record for the most Charleston swivel steps in 30 seconds, completing correctly 24. What can I say - I have the fastest legs in the world? So how did the transition from you loving dancing to appearing on Strictly happen? The show “Born to Win” is my story from where I started to Strictly so it is my autobiography on stage in dance. So people need to come watch the show and they will find out! How did the invite to join Strictly happen? I had a call from them and I did an audition for them, was as simple as that. It was I was in the right place at the right time. I am a lucky boy. Was it daunting being the “new” boy on the show? Yes it was and also I could not speak any English when I arrived in the country. You have had Georgia May Foote, Laura Whitmore and Debbie McGee as your partners and you seem to be able to bring the best out in them, why? I think the reason why is because we enjoyed and loved every second of it together and every celebrity partner I have had, has been really great and embraced it. I have been very lucky. Do you enjoy the teaching as much as the performing? Yes I would say I love to teach more than performing, sometimes depends on which students you get in front of you, sometimes they are people who really want to learn and it gives me a push and to give it 100% and teach them to dance. Will you be taking part in Strictly in 2018? I don’t know yet, we all find out June, July time and I am keeping everything crossed and waiting for the telephone call. Apart from the tour and Strictly, what else does 2018 hold for Giovanni? Happiness - that is all I need.

5

So what makes you happy? Waking up and checking my mum, dad and family are ok Do mum and dad get to see you perform on Strictly? Yes, sometimes they come over to England from Italy and they will come and see my show, like they did last year. Are your parents proud of Giovanni, their little boy? Yes they are really, really proud of me, they really are. Is there anyone you would like to dance with and you have not danced with yet? I think Queen Elizabeth would be the best partner I could have she is popular and has lots of followers. So they would all vote for us.

In ‘Born to Win’, Giovanni will be joined by 7 more professional dancers, including Luba Mushtuk, as his leading lady. Luba has most recently been seen dancing on the BBC hit show with Giovanni, to the vocal talents of musical theatre star, Sheridan Smith. The show will tell an epic tale of love and passion, with dances such as the Paso Doble and the Argentine Tango, plus you can expect other favourites like the Charleston, the Viennese Waltz and of course it has to have the Jive, seeing as Giovanni is the current Guinness World Record Holder for having the world's fastest jive kicks and flicks! Tickets are now on sale from the theatres or at www.giovannipernice.com There are also a limited number of VIP tickets available at most venues, where people can meet Giovanni before the show, get a signed print and have photo opportunities. April 22nd - Rhodes Arts Complex, Bishop's Stortford - Sold Out 25th - Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage – Sold Out

July 9th - Wyllyotts Theatre, Potters Bar 17th - The Grove Theatre, Dunstable

UK drops out of EU workers’ top six countries With the UK unemployment being at its lowest since 1975 and currently standing at 4.3 %, UK employers need to wake up and smell the coffee when it comes to recruiting and retaining its workforce! Recent figures show that the UK is no longer in the top six European countries employees would chose to move to for work. Accounting firm BDO Global’s 2017 report, which surveyed 10,000 people across 20 countries, showed that the UK had fallen out of the rankings. Matthew from Consensus HR comments: “Many industries such as the hospitality sector and NHS are finding it hard to attract and retain European Country employees even though the first stage of ‘Brexit’ has been concluded which guarantees to a certain extent their rights after Brexit to stay in the country etc. Employers, regardless of sector, need to ensure that they retain their teams as a recent report showed that EU nationals residing and working in the UK was at a record high, with 2.37 million workers from EU states. I know from my hospitality days, recruitment was extremely hard and it was not until many new countries joined the EU and were allowed to work in the UK that we were able to attract for roles such as cleaners, room cleaners and sales assistants. Employers now need to start looking at the skills of their workforce and developing the talent required to take their businesses forward so as to ensure retention of employees is maintained. We work with employers to look at their company’s current training / skills needs and work with them to identify and implement the relevant development required for their team / business. Maintaining a productive happy workforce is a major part of what the HR aspect of a business is and by having the correct systems in place such as regular six monthly constructive performance reviews and structured development will help to ensure a successful business. Employers need to look after one of their main assets, their team and manage accordingly or could face an employee shortage going forward due to Brexit and the implications it is having on attracting / retaining European Citizens and the need to depend on the talent available within this country.

A Refund from the Government

Yes, it isn’t a typo – the Government has admitted they have overcharged over one million people in respect of the fee required to be paid to the Court of Protection when registering a Lasting Power of Attorney. The Office of the Public Guardian is only supposed to charge enough to cover its running costs, but managed to make a huge profit due to the increasing demand for Lasting Powers of Attorney. The Government recognised this and so in April 2017 the registration fee was reduced. However, this didn’t help all of those who had paid the higher registration fee between 2013 and 31st March 2017. Finally, starting from 1st February 2018 anyone who paid the higher registration fee can now apply online or by telephone to get a refund. It claims to be straightforward – but may also take up to 10 minutes. The Government have even added 0.5% per annum interest onto the refund. This means you could claim as much as £54 per document. Many people will have registered two Powers of Attorney at the same time – one for their finances and property, and then a second to cover health and welfare issues. In which case you would have paid two registration fees and will be due two refunds …. but you can do this in one claim. Helpfully, either the Donor (who wanted the Power of Attorney drawn up) or the Attorney (the person appointed by the Donor) can apply for the refund – this is particularly relevant if the Donor is now unable to do so themselves because they have become incapacitated. However, the refund will only be paid into an account in the Donor’s name. So if you want to make a claim for your refund head to www.gov.uk If you want to know more about making a Lasting Power of Attorney, please contact Kirsty Limacher on 01992 463727 www.curwens.co.uk

Russell Grant’s Monthly Horoscopes March

ARIES (March21st-April20th) current events. Someone who posts an offensive remark on the 2nd is looking for a fight. Taking their bait will be serious cause for regret. A comment made in anger could come back to haunt you; wait a full day to respond to upsetting remarks. The New Moon on the 17th will excite your spirit of adventure. Launching a business, going back to college or going an overseas trip are among the possibilities. You're tired of following the rules. Stepping out of your familiar routine will be liberating. If you're single, you'll meet someone special as a result of taking a gamble. Do you have a partner? Taking a new direction will bring you closer together. On the 31st, a second Full Moon will cause disruptions on the home front. Prepare for a family quarrel.

Work will be stressful at the beginning of March, with too many responsibilities being heaped on your plate. The Full Moon on the 2nd will tear you away from a relaxing interlude, making you irritable. Try not to take out your frustrations on a colleague who is suffering just as much as you. It's not their fault you are in this situation. By forming an alliance, you can chip away at your list of things to do. On the 17th, the New Moon will give you an opportunity to withdraw from public life and enjoy some solitude. If you're in love, this would be a great time to connect in a meaningful way with your partner. Stay away from annoying distractions like social media, 24hour news cycles and phone calls from needy friends. Another Full Moon on the 31st urges you to recommit to a partner or break up altogether.

LEO (July24th-August23rd) Money from a job will be less than expected on the 2nd, due to a tense Full Moon. Let this be a lesson moving forward. If someone has violated a contract, you will have to get help from a legal professional to recoup your fee. Think through whether you want to go to the trouble and effort of a court battle. It may be better to cut your losses and leave this disappointment behind you. On the 17th, the New Moon helps you draw closer to someone you love. Whether you decide to move in together, get engaged or exchange vows is immaterial. The important thing is making a commitment to someone who has been loyal through good times and bad. Being the recipient of unconditional love has made you a better person. A second Full Moon on the 31st urges you to be on the alert for someone who is taking credit for your ideas.

TAURUS (April21st-May21st) A romance will meet a turning point on the 2nd, due to a pivotal Full Moon. It's time to decide whether you're going to get serious or part ways altogether. If you are in a committed partnership, things will be tense between you and your amour. Don't let your practical approach to life undermine your love. A group activity on the 17th will be more fun than expected, thanks to a relaxed New Moon. If you've been looking for love, you will find it with one of your teammates. Have you been yearning to develop your creative talent? An accomplished artist in the group will be happy to mentor you. This will be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Make sure you attend a festive party towards the middle of March. A flirtatious conversation will give you an attractive glow. On the 31st, a second Full Moon urges you to clear out clutter and tidy your work space.

VIRGO (August24th-September23rd) It will be difficult to talk sense to a friend, romantic partner or business colleague at the beginning of March. The Full Moon on the 2nd has you working at cross purposes. Although it pains you to do so, it may be necessary to step aside and allow them to make a terrible mistake. The New Moon on the 17th finds you making a fresh start with someone special. If you've been fighting with your amour, take this opportunity to forgive past mistakes. Are you single? You could meet someone special at a spiritual, cultural or artistic gathering. This psychic connection will be powerful and reassuring. It's a relief to finally be with someone who understands your quirks and admires your quest for perfection. Beware of a tendency to be hypercritical with your amour. On the 31st, you may be tempted to leave a steady job. Don't quit until you find another position.

GEMINI (May22nd-June21st) Your living situation will be difficult at the start of the month. A Full Moon on the 2nd urges you to find a home where you feel supported and nurtured. If you live too far from work, think about getting a place closer to your job. Spending all your time commuting has a suffocating effect on your personal life. Look for a place that is close to a park or garden. Beautiful plant life has a powerful effect on your outlook. The New Moon on the 17th marks an exciting career opportunity. Getting a promotion will allow you to exercise your creative muscles. Be open to learning advanced techniques from colleagues. At times, these lessons will be intense. When someone pushes you hard, strengthen your focus. The skills you acquire will serve you well and contribute to further career success. Another Full Moon on the 31st warns against rushing things with a love affair or creative project.

LIBRA (September24th-October23rd) The Full Moon on the 2nd brings a painful secret to light. You feel betrayed by someone who kept their motives hidden from you. This manipulator will try to get back into your good graces. Don't be fooled by their apparent apologies. Well intentioned friends might urge you to

CANCER (June22nd-July23rd) An upsetting exchange on social media will get under your skin. It's best to stay away from threads involving politics, religion and

10

forgive and forget, but turn a deaf ear to their advice. You're not going to be fooled again. On the 17th, the New Moon presents an ideal opportunity to start a job. Working for a company that appreciates your creative ability will be refreshing. Have you been worried about your health? This would be a good time to start a fitness regime. Improving your diet, taking regular exercise and getting more sleep will make you feel better. When you treat yourself well, others will do likewise. A second Full Moon on the 31st causes friction in a close relationship. Your partner will disapprove of your plans.

Make some alliances; they'll serve you well in surprising ways. A second Full Moon on the 31st urges you to conserve your energy. Don't let a person flatter you into accepting a thankless job. Protect your interests.

AQUARIUS (January21st-February19th) Go over your financial statements with a fine-toothed comb on the 2nd. That's when the Full Moon will bring some troubling information to light. If you discover fraud or unauthorised activity, notify the authorities immediately. If you discover a romantic partner has been accessing your account, you must cut ties immediately. Don't listen to lame excuses. You deserve a relationship that is founded in loyalty and trust. The New Moon on the 17th attracts a lucrative job offer. Taking this position will put you on the path of financial stability. It will also be emotionally fulfilling. Getting paid to help others will renew your faith in humanity. There are many people like you who are working hard to make the world a better place. Join forces; you won't be sorry. A legal matter could come to a disappointing conclusion on the 31st, when a second Full Moon highlights a fundamental injustice.

SCORPIO (Oct24th-Nov 22nd) A group project comes to fruition on the 2nd. If you've developed tender feelings for one of your teammates, keep them to yourself. The object of your affection has been maintaining a false front. When you get to know them outside of this alliance, you'll see some unpleasant qualities that are highly disturbing. If you're looking for love, you'll have a much better chance for finding it on the 17th. That's when the New Moon will put you in the path of someone who excites your imagination. Are you already in a relationship? Seize a chance to showcase your creative ability. Selling your work to a publisher, boutique or gallery will be a tremendous source of pride. Word will spread of your talent and you'll get some special commissions. On the 31st, the Full Moon will urge you to release a grudge. Dwelling on the past is making you bitter.

PISCES (February20th-March20th) A troubled partnership could finally come to an end. The Full Moon on the 2nd will convince you to explore greener pastures. Saying goodbye to a friend or romantic partner who doesn't meet your needs will be a relief. If you've been working with an unappreciative business associate, you'll finally be able to part ways. The New Moon on the 17th invites you to do something nice for yourself. Changing your hairstyle, revamping your wardrobe and undergoing a cosmetic procedure are among the possibilities. The important thing is to put your needs first. If you've been longing to go on a glamorous trip, book your tickets. This holiday will be empowering. Instead of doubting your abilities, your self-confidence will become stronger than ever. This is great news. A large payment or financial gain will be delayed on the 31st, when a second Full Moon cultivates greedy behaviour.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov23rd-Dec21st) An embarrassing situation could occur on the 2nd, due to a tense Full Moon. Someone will try to blame you for their mistakes. Instead of getting defensive, it will be better to accept this accusation with good grace. An executive who understands the score will reward your noble attitude. The New Moon on the 17th draws an excellent property deal into your orbit. Take this opportunity to buy or sell a house. Alternatively, you could welcome someone into your household. Making space for a baby, elderly relative or roommate will be cause for celebration. This addition to your home will make it a happy, cheerful place. Have you been arguing with a relative? Take this opportunity to extend an olive branch. Healing this breach will relieve a great deal of stress. The Full Moon on the 31st urges you to monitor the company you keep. Break ties with a shady manipulator who pretends to be your friend.

CAPRICORN (Dec22nd-Jan20th) A creative project will get a mixed reception on the 2nd. The Full Moon has created an air of confusion. Some people will instinctively love your work, while others will simply dismiss it. Try not to take the rejection personally. Instead of letting a disappointment get you down, use it as a launch pad to future success. On the 17th, the New Moon prompts you to launch an advertising campaign, blog or writing project. Discussing a subject that is close to your heart will pave the way to strong friendships. It's reassuring to realise others feel as passionately as you about certain books, movies and musical styles. You're tired of feeling like an outsider.

Russell Grant’s Monthly Horoscopes April CANCER (June22nd-July23rd) You'll attract wonderful publicity on or around Easter, when word spreads of your leadership ability. Your willingness to accept a thankless job is greatly appreciated. Thanks to you, an organisation that was on the verge of falling apart has been salvaged. Instead of listening to conventional wisdom, you tried bold methods that have paid off handsomely. As a result, you'll be offered an impressive job with a cutting edge company on the 16th. That's when an energising New Moon will enhance your professional prospects. Don't be afraid to enter an unfamiliar field; you'll take to this industry like a duck to water. A romantic relationship will burst into flower on the 30th, thanks to a passionate Full Moon. If you're single, you'll meet someone special at a work conference. Falling in love with someone who is much older or younger is a possibility. Instead of worrying about what people will say about this relationship, listen to your heart.

ARIES (March21st-April20th) A brilliant idea at Easter is worth developing. You're tired of making money for others. Launching your own business will allow you to set your own hours and follow your instincts. If you've been thinking of changing your luck, the New Moon on the 16th is an ideal time to do so. It's a great time to restyle your hair, revamp your wardrobe or undergo a cosmetic procedure. Any initiative that will change the way people see you is worth considering. On the 30th, the Full Moon is great for making a long term investment. Opening a savings, retirement or college fund will help you build a nice little nest egg. You're tired of living from one payday to the next. Use the final days of April to create a stronger financial foundation for you and your family. If you have a romantic partner, your amour will be given an impressive raise or lucrative job, thereby improving your economic status.

LEO (July24th-August23rd) Easter ushers in an opportunity to travel, study or write. Being able to visit a country that has deep spiritual meaning will be inspiring. If you aren't able to get away, sign up for an advanced course of learning or begin work on an article. Exercising your intellect will pay off handsomely this month. On the 16th, you could launch an entrepreneurial effort. The energising New Moon will help you get the funding and publicity you need to make this project successful. Don't be afraid to break away from traditional business methods. Offering unusual products and services or courting an underserved market will be highly profitable. The Full Moon on the 30th is good for wrapping up a property matter. If you need to find a new place to live, you'll find one in an established neighbourhood famous for its historic architecture. Getting out of an old lease should not be a problem.

TAURUS (April21st-May21st) Easter will be a relaxing time. Take this opportunity to enjoy the company of your nearest and dearest in a lowkey setting. Although you enjoy dressing up, you don't especially want to be working hard to serve others. If you're throwing a party, order food from a caterer instead of spending all day in the kitchen. This will allow you to connect with your guests. On the 16th, the New Moon allows you to let go of a period of struggle. Instead of dwelling on the past, you'll make a fresh start. Going after a job, courting a potential partner or launching a creative project will renew your zest for life. The Full Moon on the 30th could mark an engagement or marriage. If you've been longing to make a romance official, do it at the end of April, when your prospects for creating a lifetime of happiness are strong.

VIRGO (August24th-September23rd) News of an inheritance, legal settlement or insurance refund will reach your ears on or around Easter. This is a great time to upgrade your technical equipment. Buying a new smartphone, car or computer will greatly increase your efficiency in the early days of April. The New Moon on the 16th finds you making inroads to a close relationship. By forgiving a past mistake, you'll forge a strong bond that is virtually unbreakable. Don't be surprised when your sensual side becomes more pronounced; this is a good time to enjoy a passionate interlude with the one you love. On the 30th, the Full Moon finds you passing a test or getting a certificate. The information you've accumulated will attract the admiration of a creative person. Don't be surprised if you're asked to create a website or promotional campaign for an artist. Your ability to communicate powerful messages with just a few images and phrases is impressive.

GEMINI (May22nd-June21st) Attending an Easter party will be lots more fun than you expect. You'll meet an interesting person who excites your interest in a hobby or sport. Let your new friend take you to a cultural event or game; you'll have a wonderful time together. The New Moon on the 16th is perfect for joining a humanitarian organisation or club. Working with a team will greatly increase your chances for success. Although you have great ideas, you currently lack the social connections to get them off the ground. Join forces with people who have extensive experience in your desired field. On the 30th, the Full Moon will bring relief from a persistent health problem. Getting an accurate diagnosis will put you on the path to renewed health. Show your gratitude by donating time, money or both to a good cause. Keep the positive energy flowing as April turns to May.

14

business proposal will be a good use of your time. Your preparations will pay off on the 16th, when an uplifting New Moon attracts an exciting career offer. Being able to put your leadership skills to work will be liberating. You know how to motivate people while maintaining impeccable standards. A collaboration comes to a successful conclusion on the 30th, when the Full Moon cultivates a celebratory atmosphere. Make sure to attend a big wrap party. It's important to keep in touch with the people who have challenged your ideas, encouraged your ability and improved your skills. Don't be surprised if you are named most valuable player. People appreciate your ability to give constructive criticism without taking the joy out of work.

LIBRA (September24th-October23rd) Working with a partner will be productive in the days surrounding Easter. Be open to trying cutting edge techniques, even if you've been steeped in an old tradition. Your willingness to try new things will earn the respect of your associate, who already admires your creative abilities. On the 16th, you might decide to get engaged or married. Are you already in a serious relationship? Your amour will get an unusual work opportunity. Moving to a place that is entirely different from your current home will strengthen your bond. Having your assumptions challenged and your lifestyle altered will force you to heavily rely on each other. Petty differences that once kept you apart will magically disappear. A handsome bonus could come your way on the 30th, thanks to an enriching Full Moon. Use some of this money for some beautiful furnishings or artwork. If you've been longing to buy your own place, this would be a good time to do so.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21st-Feb19th) The 1st brings exciting news about a family or community matter. This Easter, you'll be able to break away from a confining routine and enjoy a greater measure of freedom, either in a relationship or in your neighbourhood. On the 16th, the New Moon urges you to speak up for your beliefs. Defending the underdog will cause your popularity to soar. Lately, someone who has been marginalised or unfairly criticised has gathered lots of secret support. Everyone was so afraid of the chief tormentor that they failed to challenge their abusive behaviour. This will change after you make it known that such behaviour is entirely unacceptable. Speak as you find to everyone. The Full Moon on the 30th will bring a promotion or award for a job well done. Take this opportunity to bask in the spotlight. Your hard work has paid off, making it possible to advance up the ladder to success.

SCORPIO (Oct 24th-Nov22nd) An unusual work opportunity will be made on or around Easter. Take this opportunity to gain some experience in an entirely different field. The more varied your skill set, the easier it will be to land the well paid assignments you want. The New Moon on the 16th is ideal for launching a fitness regime. Taking up a sport, overhauling your diet and establishing a restful sleeping routine will pave the way for radiant health. A personal project will come to fruition on the 30th, thanks to an empowering Full Moon. A reference letter from an accomplished business person or political figure will open doors for you. This influential person admires your hard work and diligence. Thanks to their recommendation, you'll get funding for a project, get onto a training programme or be given money from a government grant. Late April is ideal for expanding your horizons; go ahead and venture into unfamiliar territory.

PISCES (February20th-March20th) April begins on an upbeat note, when a job offer could arrive on or around Easter. This will be a wonderful opportunity to increase your income and expand your technical skills. Working with bang up to date equipment and the latest software programs will increase your appeal on the job market. The New Moon on the 16th will give you a chance to do work that is personally meaningful. In the past, you treated work simply as a means to pay the bills. Now you will have a chance to get paid by making the world a better place. It will be a refreshing change. A bold risk will pay off on or around the 30th, when the Full Moon brings a successful resolution of a legal matter. Alternatively, you may return home from a trip feeling better than you have in a long time. The end of the month finds you gaining impressive forward momentum.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23rd-Dec 21st) Pour your energy into creative projects on Easter, when your urge to create something beautiful will be powerful. Putting an innovative spin on traditional forms will attract lots of favourable publicity. The New Moon on the 16th is ideal for going on a first date or going on a second honeymoon. Whether you are single or attached, mid-April will be one of those most romantic times of the entire year. Letting go of a grudge will be easier than expected on the 30th, when the Full Moon urges you to get rid of excess emotional baggage. Instead of dwelling on a past injustice, you'll turn your focus to the future. Establishing financial security will be easier when you adopt an optimistic attitude. Putting a Spring Back in to your Step

As the daffs start to appear hopefully so does a new sense of energy and a desire to put a spring back in your step. Nothing does that faster than getting one hundred per cent liquid nutrition straight to your cells; for the times when you are out and about and it’s not practical to make your own freshly squeezed juice Hemel Hempstead has the best juice bar in the area (who knew?). In addition to the usual menu of freshly squeezed juices they offer a mean Ginger shot (it really is just fresh ginger … whooah!) and if you want a three to five day detox you can get their nutritionally worked out detox programme so that you can concentrate on detoxing rather than making your own (after all, it’s the cleaning out of the juicer that’s the annoying bit!). Find them just opposite Boots in Hemel Hempstead www.gingerandlime.co

If you’ve come out of Dry January and want to continue the good work try a juice with beetroot. You can make your own of course, just pop half an apple, one small beetroot (cut into slices if you don’t have a wide chute juicer) half a carrot and a handful of parsley. Juice it all and serve over ice. It’s an incredibly good detoxifier and tastes surprisingly sweet.

If you fancy a quaint and quirky afternoon tea this Easter, invite your family to sample the unique atmosphere at Miss Darmons Little Heath Tea room near Berkhamsted. Check out the artisan hot chocolate, homemade cakes, and gluten free options. Bring the mad hatter.

Given up take-away coffee and plastic? I have given up take-away coffee since I realised that the cups can’t be recycled, and now that we have such a plastics problem, am trying to cut down. Like most people I did not realise that take-away cups contained plastic and am really annoyed that nothing has been done by government or the big corporates. The government, because they have the power to stop us destroying the planet yet seem to react far to late and the corporates because they should find an alternative or be more responsible. Do the corporates know what they are doing and blame the lack of government legislation for not changing? It seems that celebrities like Jamie Oliver and David Attenborough have to change public opinion, and voters’ beliefs, before any government is brave enough to act. Pathetic! I am amazed how long the UK takes to make environmental changes when other countries around the world have successfully adopted the same change years before. Did you know that Denmark put a tax on plastic bags 12 years before the UK! Why can’t our government simply copy best practice? Quicker! So, government; please put a tax, or ban, on take-away cups with plastic as soon as possible. Corporates: offer customers cups that can be recycled, or re-usable cups and a washing service, or a premium price to use a ‘bad’ cup and discounted price for reusable cup. People: please buy a reusable cup if you want a take-away. And other plastics? Wow, nearly everything has plastic. Milk cartons, packaging, ketchup cartons, etc. Time to go back to bottles and unpackaged food? Like the above we must all do our bit. But make it known that we are sick of government and corporates waiting for each other, or consumer attitude, to make change. Our advice is change, and use BigBarn to avoid the big corporates. And use our Local Food Map to buy local food with no packaging. Not all of it will be perfect but small retailers and producers want to win you as a regular customer, so will react to your constructive criticism. Let’s make this country a better place, quickly. www.bigbarn.co.uk
