Carpet&FlooringReview ‘Feather-like’ fibre for floors ITC has launched Soft Origins, a two-style strong collection of ultra-soft carpet for the home crafted from 100% solution-dyed micro polyester. Bringing feather-like comfort to the floor, Soft Origin’s micro polyester fibre is spun into a two-ply yarn that adds resilience, with solution-dyed colour providing the stain-resistance now demanded from even the softest of carpets. Crafted in a classic 1/8th gauge Saxony, the micro polyester yarn also gives Soft Origin styles the silk-like look that is proving a popular choice for residential carpet. “Soft Origins is a significant development for the ITC brand, with an evolutionary micro polyester yarn that is incredibly soft to the touch, the collection establishes ITC as a force in trend-focused carpet,” explains Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Group. Soft Origins features two qualities; Cashmere Velvet and Silky Lush. In a 1,650g/m2 pile weight, Cashmere Velvet is the collection’s heaviest style, featuring in a palette of eight modern colours. The expressive Silky Lush highlights micro polyester’s silk-like quality, this time in a 1,540g/m2 pile weight and in 11 pastel shades. Both carpets come with Balta’s TwinBack backing that heightens underfoot comfort and makes the carpet easier to install through better flexibility and a soft surface that prevents scuffs and marks on skirtings. Available four-metre wide, Cashmere Velvet and Silky Lush were previewed during Balta’s Open Week event in December and are available now. T +32 56 62 22 11 www.baltagroup.com

Welcoming wool Royal Charter is the new, exquisite cut-pile twist from Wilton Royal by Abingdon Flooring, heralding the continued re-emergence of wool-rich carpet as a discerning choice for those seeking quality and longevity. In two weights, Royal Charter (40oz) and Royal Charter Deluxe (50oz), the yarn features a healthy 80% wool content with Meltbond to achieve a finer velvet finish and to deliver value without compromising wool’s impressive resilience and unmistakable natural look. In a ranging palette of 22 colours from elegant polished steel and natural calico to bold cardinal red and sage green, Royal Charter is well equipped for today’s home. Martin Peace, sales director, Abingdon Flooring comments: “A British crafted wool carpet has always stood as a marker of quality, but there is no arguing that the natural fibre’s market share has suffered at the hands of manmade alternatives. It commands a place in today’s market as the preserve of homeowners wanting the unmistakable look, resilience and longevity that it offers. To this day, no manmade fibre has been able to replace this unique combination and offer wool’s sustainable and renewable status. “We’ve introduced Royal Charter as we commit to developing new styles by Wilton Royal that offer a modern response to wool’s rising status through value-driven qualities.” Featuring Abingdon Flooring’s Soft Fleece Back for a great ‘in-store feel’ and easier fitting, Royal Charter and the weightier Royal Charter Deluxe are available in Abingdon Flooring’s multiple widths - 2.5, 4 and 5m and come Heavy Domestic rated, so are well-suited for use throughout the home. A 10-year warranty for Royal Charter and 12-year warranty for Royal Charter Deluxe are provided as reassurance for consumers looking to make the switch. NEWS Super stylish safety The new Isafe 70 heterogeneous vinyl safety flooring collection from IVC, features 36 wood, colour and material looks ready to bring TRRL36+ and R11 performance to commercial environments. Presenting one of the broadest sheet vinyl safety flooring collections today, Isafe 70 features micro corundum particles that provide reassuring slipresistance in all conditions. Not only surer underfoot but also less visible to the naked eye than standard additives, micro corundum helps to give Isafe 70’s wood and material looks authenticity with IVC’s minimal pattern repeat technology and Invisiweld seam bonding heightening the effect over large areas. All Isafe 70 floors features HyperGrip polyurethane for a matt-finish surface that resists stains and is easier to clean.

Sporting performance

Isafe 70 Woods’ 11 oak effects ranging from light natural hues in Driftwood Oak and Hessian Oak to dark tones in Stout Oak and Barn Oak, giving an authentic wood look suitable for any corporate, office, retail, hospitality, leisure, housing, education or healthcare project. In Isafe 70 Colours, the same locations can enjoy 14 coloured decors, all with a subtle light/dark tonal fleck that breaks-up large areas and minimises the appearance of dirt. In vivid Sky Blue and Orange Zest, Isafe 70 Colours presents colour-pops for striking accent areas, along with functional shades such as Monument Grey and Moccasin Beige.

Expona LVT has transformed Elverys Sports’ Bridgewater Store in Arklow in a substantial renovation project.

Turning to Isafe 70 Materials reveals popular architectural elements such as Concrete Dark Grey and Concrete Grey, along with the trend-capturing terrazzo of Roma and Milano. The 11 decors of Isafe 70 Materials are among the most exciting safety flooring designs available today.

Expona Commercial was the ideal choice as it is suitable for high traffic areas such as a store or commercial shopping area. The contrasting designs also allowed the contractor to highlight certain areas of the store positioning the wood planks around the tills and the Cool Grey Concrete tiles to fill the rest of the area.

www.ivc-commercial.com

Before laying the new floor significant subfloor preparation was required including the removal of the existing floor covering consisting of porcelain tiles on the main shop floor and vinyl tiles in the back of house locations. Some walls were also removed to give a more spacious open appearance and 800m2 of new floor covering of Polyflor Expona Commercial in Cool Grey Concrete and Bronzed Salvaged Wood.

Tom Walsh from Tom Walsh Flooring Contractors comments, ‘The stylish, modern designs of both the concrete and wood finishes complement the interior design scheme perfectly. The properties of the product leaves us confident that this flooring will provide the safety and assurance needed in a commercial environment.’ The Expona Commercial range was created to bring flooring solutions that are tailor made to suit the customers vision with reproductions of the widest range of natural and man-made materials combined with innovative modern finishes. Designed for commercial interiors, all Expona products are enhanced with Polyflor PUR, Polyflor’s exclusive and robust polyurethane reinforcement which is cross linked and UV cured to provide superior cleaning benefits and a cost effective maintenance regime. The Expona Commercial range features 80 inspiring wood, stone and abstract effect designs, 55 of which are brand new additions to the collection. With new parquet, painted, mosaic, rustic and metallic effects, Expona Commercial LVT can be used to create adventurous interior schemes featuring bold statement flooring designs which tap into the latest architectural trends. Expert installation advise F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has appointed Jason Tatton as a technical service officer, further strengthening its technical service department.

Skip, or jump to recycling? It’s that time of year again when you’re notified of yet another increase in your skip costs. Over the past ten years, commercial waste disposal costs have risen by a staggering 250% in order for the UK to meet EU landfill diversion targets by 2020. It’s not all doom and gloom though, especially for the flooring industry, as improvements in technology have meant the cost to recycle new and uplifted carpet and underlay waste is now less than sending it to landfill when using a Kenburn Carpet Crusher. Jason brings a wealth of knowledge gained through 18 years experience in the flooring industry to the role, having previously managed his family’s flooring business. Commenting on his appointment, Jason said: “I’m really looking forward to working on a wide variety of projects and speaking to lots of different people. I’ve always enjoyed working in flooring, and the chance to work for one of the industry’s most respected names is a great opportunity. As a flooring contractor, I was in touch with F. Ball’s technical service team, so I realise how important the service is from a professional perspective.” Jason and his wife Kristy have four children. In his spare time he enjoys walking, travelling and sport, in particular football, and he coaches the football team of one of his sons. F. Ball’s technical service team is available to answer calls about products and flooring projects from 7.30am – 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. NEWS F. Ball’s lotta bottle F. Ball and Co. Ltd. is continuing its efforts to tackle plastic waste by introducing a new 20 litre size recyclable bottle for the reformulated version of its popular Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier. The new-sized bottles are made from 95%–98% recycled plastic and can be reprocessed as many as ten times. It follows F. Ball’s replacement of its 5 litre plastic bottles for gauging liquids, primers and tackifiers with recycled alternatives – a change that will remove over 100 tonnes of virgin plastic material from the waste stream every year. The move to recycled packaging is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to reducing packaging waste, particularly waste plastic because of the adverse effects it has on wildlife and the wider environment. It is part of the company’s initiatives to ensure the sustainability of its business practices and manage its environmental impact, for which it has been awarded ISO 14001 certification. Commenting on the introduction of the recycled bottles, F. Ball Managing Director Mark Hughes said: “The introduction of the new F41 bottles is a continuation of our efforts to minimise the impact our activities have on the environment. These include investing in energy saving technologies, generating power from renewable energy sources and the conservation of the natural environment surrounding our Staffordshire headquarters.” Styccobond F41 is also available in 5 litre recyclable bottles and 15 litre rectangular buckets and has recently been reformulated to provide increased coverage capabilities, a faster drying time and increased tack. It is also significantly easier to apply as a result of reduced viscosity. T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

All change at ERFM It’s all change at the European Resilient Flooring Manufacturers’ Institute (ERFMI) with the announcement of several new senior management appointments, including Jane Gardner as its Managing Director. ERFMI represents the interests of the resilient flooring sector in Europe. Its members produce floorcoverings made of Vinyl, Rubber, Linoleum, Cork, Polyurethane or synthetic thermoplastic polymers. Jane succeeds Ton Pluijmert, who retires from ERFMI after 16 years and the organisation thanks Ton for his valuable contribution to the industry. ERFMI has also elected Robert N B Smith, Director of Technical Services – James Halstead plc as its new Chairman at their recent General Assembly held on November 14th 2018 in Brussels. He takes over from Pierre Lienhard, Group Marketing & Strategy Director for Gerflor who has been acting as Interim Chair. Demosthene Sakkas, Director of the Research and Innovation Division EMEA at Tarkett takes over as the new Chair of the Technical Committee. Jane Gardner was previously Head of Consulting for Axion, a resource efficiency consultancy based in Manchester, UK, where she was involved in projects covering a number of different plastic products with a particular focus on collection and recycling. As well as setting up Recofloor, the national collection and recycling scheme for vinyl flooring, Jane managed Carpet Recycling UK, a membership association focused on increasing carpet recycling. ERFMI represents the interests of 16 manufacturers and distributors of resilient floor coverings across Europe, who between them produce in excess of 360 million sq metres of flooring a year and employ 11,000 people. Landfill diversion continues increase The volume of carpet waste diverted from landfill in the UK has shown a modest increase with 175,252 tonnes reused, recycled or recovered for energy in 2018, according to Carpet Recycling UK. This represents a diversion rate of 44% - up from 42% and an increase of 7,252 tonnes on 2017, the not for profit membership association reports. Around 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arise each year in the UK. Energy recovery accounted for 113,914 tonnes – 65% of the total and a reduction of 10,087 tonnes from 2017. Reuse and recycling of waste carpet was up by 19,338 tonnes on 2017 to 61,338 tonnes, representing 35% of the total. In 2018, main growth areas were in equestrian surface materials, carpet tile reuse, carpets for cement kilns as a renewable resource to replace fossil fuels for export and in the UK and local incineration of municipal solid wastes (MSW). Commenting on their 2018 achievements, CRUK Scheme Manager Adnan Zeb-Khan said: “Our Core Funder manufacturing and distribution membership continues to grow, providing exceptional support to CRUK as well as to their customers. These Core Funders are industry leaders in developing voluntary producer responsibility for carpets throughout their lifecycle.” CRUK’s core funders are Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/ Headlam, Brinton Carpets, DESSO, ege, Milliken and Balsan. Adnan noted that CRUK’s retailer and flooring contractor membership has increased as more companies recognise cost savings and sustainability impacts for their businesses. “They appreciate the help from our Core Funders to improve their results, in many cases saving thousands of pounds per year,” he continued. NEWS Texture and technique Inspired by the world’s largest salt flats in Bolivia, the Uyuni Collection of rugs by Louis de Poortere brings beautiful multi-layered effects through undulating depth of structure reflecting the thick, lithium-rich salt crust for two wonderfully unique creations. Weaving together cotton chenille in varying thread counts with yarns of space-dyed wool, Tunupa’s horizontal ripples are presented in two powerful colourways inspired by rich wool hues, filtered through cotton chenille tones of brine and salt. In Brine and Brown, Tunupa sees rich mineral colours; almost-black, bright ochre, mustard, moss green and deep-sea blue filtered with soft and pale brown tones in cotton chenille. For Blue and Salt, a rich space-dyed sapphire blue forms the base tone, littered with the same accents of ochre, mustard and moss and softened through with layers of textured cotton chenille in salt. For Colchani, Louis de Poortere has inspired by the iconic Chanel Tweed, presenting an organic chequered design in three rich and natural colourways. Cloud and Sun, Citrine Load and Cactus Seed give Colchani a powerful look that captures the elegance and poise of one of fashion’s most recognisable fabrics, delivering rich texture through the artful combination of its space-dyed wool and cotton chenille blend. “The multi-layer, almost hand-crafted texture of Uyuni belies its jacquard flatweave machine-made origins and we’ve pushed our machinery hard to create these wonderful effects,’ explains Alan Russell, Sales Director UK for the Belgian manufacturer. “By combining different yarn counts of cotton chenille with wool we have been able to change the definition of yarns throughout each rug. With the technique we’ve used, each Uyuni rug is somewhat unique, bringing something a little extra to this brand-new collection for 2019.” Woven on Jacquard looms in 15% wool and 85% cotton chenille both Uyuni designs are available direct from Louis de Poortere in a range of standard sizes with anti-slip backing, ranging from 140 x 200cm to 290 x 390cm. Marketing insights Tile styles - a plethora of choice Providing ultimate versatility in design style and material specification, tiles provide an effective flooring solution for both domestic and commercial applications. We take a look at the latest innovations in tile design and the choice of finishes and construction materials on offer. Karndean Designflooring’s natural-looking stone effect luxury vinyl tiles offer a versatile option for any room in the home. Hard wearing and easy to maintain, a Karndean floor is waterproof, slip resistant and surprisingly warm underfoot, a perfect choice to pair with underfloor heating for extra comfort.

Amtico, Signature French Weave

Stella Coyle, national retail sales manager at Karndean Designflooring, said; “Natural stone tiles are a popular flooring choice for homeowners, but what puts many people off is how they feel underfoot – they’re known for being hard to walk on and cold in winter. We offer a huge choice of realistic stone designs to suit all interiors. From versatile slate and limestone designs to stunning marble and travertine, a Karndean floor is a warmer, more resilient surface that adds instant appeal to any living space. “For a classic choice, a traditional black and white monochrome pattern creates an elegant style that is perfect for hard working floors such as bathrooms and hallways. Or, for a twist on traditional style, our slate designs in contemporary shades of grey and charcoal are also proving popular.

SPECIAL NEWS FEATURE

Compatibility test: producing F. Ball’s RAG Every year for almost half a century, F. Ball and Co. Ltd., the UK’s leading manufacturer of subfloor preparation products and adhesives for floorcoverings, has produced an annual update of its Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG). We spoke to Stephen Boulton, the company’s Technical Service Manager, about the work that goes into making it the most authoritative publication of its kind. The 2019 edition of F. Ball’s Recommended Adhesives Guide is now available and features over 6,000 adhesive recommendations for floorcoverings made by over 200 manufacturers – more than ever before. But how does F. Ball make sure that contractors and floorcovering retailers can rely on its advice to ensure that adhesives are compatible with the floorcovering in question and will perform throughout the lifetime of any flooring installation? EXPERTS IN FLOORING It’s the job of the company’s technical service department, headed by Technical Service Manager Stephen Boulton. They spend thousands of hours every year rigorously testing F. Ball products in different environments and applications, including checking the performance of F. Ball adhesives with a vast range of different floorcoverings. Stephen also leads the technical service team, who are on standby from 7.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, to provide expert advice on how to use F. Ball’s range of subfloor preparation products and adhesives. “Together, these functions ensure that people have the knowledge to get the most out of F. Ball products and can always be confident they will perform as required,” says Stephen. WHAT DOES THE TESTING INVOLVE? “We have a criteria for measuring the bond performance of adhesives with floorcoverings based on British Standards. Tests measure initial grab, as well as bond performance over time, using specialist equipment designed to simulate the effects of ageing. We are only happy to include a recommendation in the RAG if we are certain that the adhesive will perform for the entire lifetime of the floorcovering,” says Stephen. TESTING, TESTING… Stephen outlines some of the tests that are conducted in controlled conditions at the company’s purpose-built laboratory at its Staffordshire headquarters: Shear tests measure the ability of an adhesive to resist lateral movement when used to bond a particular floorcovering. “This involves adhering floorcovering samples to a rigid substrate and leaving at 23°C for 28 days. A machine, called a tensometer, is then used to measure the force required to

Shear test

Peel test

pull the floorcovering from the substrate. Identical samples are kept at a temperature of 50°C for a further 42 days to simulate the floorcoverings being in place for 12 months. The force required to remove the floorcoverings must have reduced by less than 25% to pass the test. “The peel test is identical to the shear test, except the tensometer attempts to pull the floorcovering from the substrate at a 90º angle,” adds Stephen. When an adhesive’s compatibility with vinyl floorcoverings is being tested, a dimensional stability test must also be carried out to assess its ability to resist the natural shrinkage of vinyl. For this, samples of vinyl floorcovering are bonded to a dimensionally stable, rigid substrate and left for seven days at room temperature. Afterwards, the vinyl is measured and held at a constant temperature of 50ºC for a further seven days. The sample is measured again and returned to room temperature before the cycle is repeated twice. The maximum dimensional change throughout the test period allowed by British Standards is 0.2%. Tests are also designed to see how bonds stand up to stresses they are typically exposed to in real life. “The castor chair test allows us to assess bond performance of particular adhesives with different floorcoverings when subjected to the movements of chairs with castor wheels, like they would be in an office, for example.” This involves a machine, consisting of three castors on a rotating platform, which applies a maximum weight of 90kg to the floorcovering for 25,000 revolutions, changing directions every 60 cycles. “If, after 25,000 revolutions, the floorcovering shows no edge ravel or delamination, the bond is deemed to have passed the test.” T 01538 361633 wwwf-ball.co.uk

Cross cut dimensional stablitity test

Castor chair test

STAYING ON THE BALL How do they keep on top of developments and make sure all of the recommendations are up to date? “It’s become a full time job as the number and type of floorcoverings on the market have grown rapidly in recent years. We have a Liaison Manager, Paul Starkey, whose job is to develop and maintain a close relationship between F. Ball and the floorcovering manufacturers. He regularly liaises with the manufacturers to check when backings of floorcoverings change and new products are released, so when this happens, we are in a position to test compatibility and update our advice if necessary.”

from The Stocklists

It’s not the only aspect of producing the RAG that has moved with the times. Now, as well as being available as an A5 printed booklet, you can access it on F. Ball’s website and download an app version for free. “More people than ever are reading the RAG in this way,” says Stephen. “In fact, it’s set to become the most popular method of consulting the guide.”

Academy accelerates into 2019 The Quick-Step Academy for Excellence in Flooring is one of the UK’s key training facilities for the flooring industry. As 2019 gathers pace, the centre is welcoming more professionals keen to further their career through its range of education and installation courses in wood, laminate and LVT. With 141 installation courses booked and 85 customer training days already delivered, the Academy is certainly starting off the year with a packed diary and its relationship with Carpetright only looks set to continue this success. The partnership means that installers working for the company can attend wood, laminate and LVT courses at the Academy, rather than the in-house training programmes offered by the national retailer, so using the centre to further improve their skill base. Lee Thompson, procurement and technical manager, Academy for Excellence in Flooring, reveals more: “Our partnership with Carpetright gives installers a unique opportunity to develop their installation expertise through our training programmes, while meeting their obligations for the retailer. This means that they can give extra value to the services they offer and provide a reassuring level of expertise for any work carried out for the company. It’s a win-win for Carpetright and the Academy alike, as well as the wider retail fitting industry, raising standards and creating expertise that can be applied to any wood, laminate or LVT work.” The Academy’s Master Installer programme still remains at the heart of its operation, and fully-booked until July of this year, it’s clear that its effects are being felt by a growing number of installers across the country. Covering a mix of knowledge and practical installation skills, the pass or fail course is conducted by Quick-Step endorsed trainers in the Academy’s recently refurbished training facility. This ensures its notably high standards are maintained and that all qualified Master Installers can provide a Quick-Step supported lifetime workmanship warranty on wood and laminate, or LVT installations. The Quick-Step Academy has just two Master Installer spaces left in June and July courses, with the programme running again in September after the summer break. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk 38 March 2019

Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

Increasing profitability by extending product offering Flooring retailers share the same need as any business in that they need to operate on a profitable basis and many will be constantly looking to increase their range of stock items, leading to the inclusion of options that complement their existing product lines. Perhaps one of the more obvious is adding doormats, rugs and runners, such as those offered by manufacturer and supplier William Armes. Its range includes natural fibre products such as coir, jute and cotton through to man-made fibres such as polypropylene. It offers a full range of mats suitable for every entrance and its decorative ranges are designed to combine colour and functionality for multi-purpose use around the home. Many products are machine washable and supplied with an anti-slip latex backing for use in kitchens, hallways and other areas. “Superior manufacturing quality keeps customers coming back again and again for established favourites Kilkis and Ios, which have been joined recently by more modern designs such as the Mira mat,” the company states. More recently, William Armes has produced the new Dandy Eco products, which are manufactured from either natural fully renewable raw materials or from recycled materials such as car tyres or plastic bottles.

Miele, Blizzard CX1 Vacuum Cleaner “Wool is a natural, sustainable fibre offering a whole host of benefits including fire resistance and incredible durability. To retain pile and freshness we recommend regular vacuuming, which is where Miele comes in, offering a fantastic range of the highest quality cleaners on the market.” The offer is running until 31 October 2019 and promotional literature can be requested through your buying group contact or wool carpet product manufacturer. Recommended by carpet manufacturers, Sebo states that its vacuum cleaners and Duo-P carpet cleaning powder are ideal sales options for flooring retailers. Renowned for the quality of its award-winning vacuum cleaners, these can be sold with confidence, the company states. “Many issues that arise after the sale of flooring are caused by poor care and maintenance: Introducing Sebo vacuum cleaners during the sales process means these potentially expensive-to-resolve problems can be prevented, the customer has the right vacuum cleaner to look after their flooring and the retailer makes an additional sale,” it says. For removing stains, it recommends the Sebo Clean Box, containing Duo-P carpet cleaning powder for the general cleaning of carpet and upholstery, but also for clearing up emergencies such as spilled red wine. The company additionally has a tailored flooring retailer scheme to make things as easy as possible. Yet more options are provided by Packexe in the form of products designed to help customers to protect what matters most to retailers and their clients.

“Superior manufacturing quality keeps customers coming back again and again for established favourites Kilkis and Ios, which have been joined recently by more modern designs such as the Mira mat” Another option for retailers to consider is the initiative from British Wool, Miele and The Campaign for Wool, which are working together to offer consumers a £100 discount on a Miele bagless cleaner when they purchase a wool carpet for their home. Wool Carpet Focus Group chairman Martin Curtiss says: “This promotion is designed to highlight products of real quality. Wool carpets offer the best quality flooring option in our opinion. 40 March 2019

“That’s why our self-adhesive Packexe Carpet and Packexe Hardfloor protection films are cleverly engineered with unique adhesive qualities,” the company explains. “Designed with precision, each film works perfectly with its intended surface to give a no residue guarantee. “Providing quality protection from spillages, scratches, outdoor footwear and dust; all our films are leak proof, slip resistant and can be left down for up to eight–10 weeks, making Packexe the ideal solution when faced with the problem of protecting your brand new carpet or floor at a function, during decorating or just after it’s been laid,” the company concludes.

NEWS Celebrating and supporting carpet heritage SMG has pledged its support to the industry’s impressive Museum of Carpet in Kidderminster by becoming corporate partners of the project – and inviting all its members to visit! The Museum records the 300 year-old heritage at the heart of carpet-making with interactive displays and exhibits including a working Jacquard Wilton loom from the 1800s and a spool Axminster loom from the fifties. Set in the historic Stour Vale Mill, it is staffed by volunteers, many of whom are former weavers. The Museum, which gets top ratings from visitors on Trip Advisor, depends on funding from the National Lottery and industry sponsors to supplement its admission fees. “The Museum is an excellent celebration of all the tradition, experience and quality that goes into making carpet and we’re proud to support it,” says Mike Reed of buying group SMG. “Everyone should make an effort to see the exhibits there which give a great insight into the heritage and technology of the carpet trade.” SMG has organised a free open day at the museum for its members this March and will go on to visit Brockway Carpets to show the very latest developments in the industry at a company that is still proudly based in Kidderminster.

DOMOTEX 2019 • Hannover 2019 Review

Luxury leads a lagging market David Spragg analyses the trends revealed at Domotex 2019 Domotex, as the world’s largest flooring fair, really sets the agenda for trends in the sector at the start of the year and the mood in the market right now, the emphasis is undoubtedly on quality and on higher end consumers. In a normal world, this would suggest that consumer confidence is buoyant and suppliers are taking the chance to move upmarket and up-margin. In fact, almost the reverse is true! As we reported last month, it was very clear that mainstream suppliers spent their cashflow in 2018 on building stock against the threat of Brexit disruption rather than investing in product development that might entice consumers to spend more – a depressing, but wholly understandable strategy in the current circumstances. The current perception is that the only scope for market growth at the moment is in the top end luxury sector where consumers still have money to spend and are less price sensitive and less exposed to the chilly economic climate. So, those that can… do! Companies with a high-end portfolio to offer have been investing in reaching those classy consumers who can afford it and some beautiful flooring products are being offered as a result. On this basis, you see a resurgence in top quality wool, in handwoven, and in sophisticated nylon for carpets and rugs – and in high performance LVT products. Companies whose whole focus is on wool like Brockway and Riviera reported brisk business and mixed-fibre houses like ITC, Edel Telenzo and Lano presented new offers in luxury wool alongside stylish nylon ranges. The variety of subtle textures that a well woven wool carpet can offer is much in demand with modern consumers and loop pile continues to do well to match this market. Riviera Home

ITC is a good example of a supplier that is moving increasingly upmarket and on the synthetic side they presented some superb nylon 66 products as well as cleverly engineered upgraded polyester and companies like Condor are offering improved polypropylenes.

“Companies with a high-end portfolio to offer have been investing in reaching those classy consumers who can afford it and some beautiful flooring products are being offered as a result.”

Lano’s new Evita is another top choice for deep, soft nylon in the residential sector while Tapibel’s smart nylon products are also getting increasingly adventurous and attractive for the commercial and hospitality sectors.

Telenzo

Colours haven’t moved much, partly due to the hiatus in product development, but greys are getting more variations in blends with a variety of warmer colours and the return of greige after a period when greys were quite cool and urban. Also, there is some evidence that heathered carpet is increasing in popularity again, a trend Cormar are capitalising on with the re-launch of their popular Primo Choice.

Now that David Attenborough has shown the world how fish are swimming against a tide of plastic, environmental credentials have increasing impetus and several new technologies were on show including Vebe’s new Ecolux needle-punch and Beaulieu Yarn. Beaulieu showcased the launch of their new sustainable yarns including Resilya, EquoBalance (a biomass-balanced yarn) and – a new word for the industry! – Softitude, a soft, solution-dyed nylon. Happily for consumers, LVT is a race to the top in terms of quality, performance and authenticity and although the number of suppliers is rapidly expanding to a bewildering degree to meet the interest in this sector, retailers will find it difficult to make a bad choice. And at competitive prices.

“So post-Brexit, maybe more investment and innovation will be released across the market. In the meantime, try to sell high, but not cheap!” Waterproofing, impact resistance and exemplary acoustic performance are to the fore with the latest rigid core and homogenous products offering outstanding stability and ease of installation. Decors don’t change much in the wood effects but continue to impress with increasing realism and in tiles, some of the ‘urban’ decors are increasingly popular. So post-Brexit, maybe more investment and innovation will be released across the market. In the meantime, try to sell high, but not cheap! In this issue, we’re focussing on more of the agenda-setting news and launches from manufacturers – see pages43-49 www.domotex.de

Leading in luxury

B18 10/01/2019 09:53 Page 1

ITC Natural Luxury Flooring ITC Natural Luxury Flooring made an elegant appearance at Domotex as they accelerate recognition of their brand as a leader in luxury flooring with broadloom carpet and rugs that are a cut above in terms of quality and choice. Among a gallery of impressive products on show, ITC launched their luxurious Gloss range – a hand woven cut pile in seven colours in a modified polyester that has the fine appearance of the highly desirable viscose fibre but without its performance shortcomings. A solid, tightly woven 3.8 kg/m pile gives this a real heavyweight feel. “We have had a tremendously positive reaction to this launch,” says Jo Edwards of ITC. “People are now really sitting up and seeing the potential of polyester. There are so many plus points – all of the luxury without compromising any performance.” Another headliner in Hanover was Richmond which was used to carpet the entire stand, showing ITC’s confidence in the character of this range. The de-lustred nylon 6.6 yarn creates a wool-like appearance and handle which is becoming increasingly popular and the dense, tight construction gives it a fine finish. ITC admits that Richmond has been some time in development but they make no excuses for getting this range just right and response from visitors to the stand confirmed their judgement. The range, which is available in 11 colours and two widths, 4 & 5m, will be going to the market this month. Another eyecatcher which is new for the UK market is Riverline, a chunky, textured cable rib design made from 100% New Zealand wool which allows for six very clean colours. T +31 38 386 11 60 • www.itcnaturalluxuryflooring.com

For something completely different, ITC launched their new bespoke rug concept Da Vinci which offers high definition printing on soft nylon 6.6 for either a gallery of stunning designs or the customers own image file. These are sophisticated, high-end rugs with wrapped around design edges and built-in non--slip underlay. The colour reproduction is remarkably vivid and although these rugs come with a luxurious pricetag, the minimum order is only 4m2 so you can start small and still impress.

DOMOTEX 2019 review Planet proof and popular Vebe Vebe, part of the Condor Group, is a world leader in needle felt carpet and increasingly turning its attention to the UK market for its range of broadloom carpet, mats and tiles which are made using some of the most advanced technology in Europe at the company’s base in The Netherlands. A major launch for Vebe at the Domotex event was Premium, the “new generation” fibre-bonded polypropylene carpet which is distinctively different thanks to a new production methodology. “This carpet has a much better touch than conventional products in the sector with smooth looks and a straighter pile that not only looks smarter but is easier to clean,” said Klaas Timmerman, the Sales Manager at Vebe. The company has also paid close attention to market trends. “This range has been born and brewed for the British market,” says Klaas. “We have stepped away from the old-fashioned colours to create a special UK colour bank of on-trend shades including the most popular grey tones.” T +31(0)88 8251 100 www.condor-group.eu/en/vebe

LVT superiority and style adore

The huge momentum that adore floors has been building worldwide for its ground-breaking LVT product portfolio is about to roll into the UK and make a major impact in a sector that is hungry for quality and performance. The flagship residential range Regent Monarch is a rigid core click-down and floating LVT made with a unique manufacturing which creates a high-density, homogenous structure that offers unprecedented dimensional stability, damage resistance and waterproofing. “adore floors have been a huge success worldwide and now we are all set to serve the UK market with a product that has a better specification than anything else out there and it shows,” said adore’s European CEO Paul Brady (pictured below, centre, with new European marketeers Kelly Mortensen (left) and Sacha Safwatt Ben Mechri (right). “We are really stepping up our approach to the UK market now and are fully stocked in Europe with product, backed up by exceptional marketing,” says Paul, “but because of the benefits of the huge scale of adore’s international operation, we are going to be able to offer this premium product at a highly competitive price.” Based in New York, adore has offices in the UK, Europe and Ireland with a major warehouse facility in Belgium which opened in November. The company controls state-of-the-art factories in South Korea and China with even more capacity planned for the future. Over and above the technical excellence, adore places an emphasis on contemporary design and authenticity, offering an innovative registered embossed feature of more than 30 decors and a choice of sizes including 1220 x 181 fashionably long planks and a range of tiles.

adore is working directly with independents and distributors in the UK and has recently completed a major programme of sampling and distinctive marketing support to motivate consumer sales. “We are feeling very bullish about the prospects in the UK,” said Paul. “Everyone who sees the products loves them and its total reliability is very reassuring for retailers.” The company also gave a sneak preview of a new product which will be launched in the UK shortly for which it has worldwide exclusivity. This is LVT with a specialised tackified backing which has been developed in the US to provide a fast, effective loose lay installation over original floors - and it can be lifted for re-laying. It’s non-slip performance has been tested to the limit, even in a warehouse where turning forklifts did not disturb the installation! Ultimately, this backing will be available across the full range of adore floors.

DOMOTEX 2019 review Fashionable feeling for rugs Balta “The current trend in rugs is all about textures and we have had a lot of success in using mixed yarns, specialised weaving techniques and heat shrink technology to achieve rugs that are much more interesting.”

Balta is probably best known for broadloom in FEBRUARY the UK 2018_FEB18 but about half its 10/01/2019 09:53 Page 1 European business is in rugs and the company has been building a portfolio of options that takes some beating. The Balta home division brought no less than 800 new rugs to Domotex in Hanover with offers at every price point with some highly distinctive design and innovative yarn technology.

Geert Vanden Bossche, Marketing Director of Balta Group

“We know our customers and how to give them a rug portfolio that appeals to the widest range of consumers from high-end, handmade to entry-level prints – with a lot of unique ranges in between,” said Geert Vanden Bossche, Marketing Director of Balta Group. “The current trend in rugs is all about textures and we have had a lot of success in using mixed yarns, specialised weaving techniques and heat shrink technology to achieve rugs that are much more interesting.” said Geert. In the mainstream sector, the launch of new ranges Delight, Feel, Touch and Dolce has added considerably to the polypropylene and polyester offers from Balta and these products also feature a New Generation backing in which a felt made in the rug’s main fibre is melted onto the reverse without the need for latex to create a product that is washable, foldable, affordable and sustainable. Attracting a lot of attention was the smart new loop pile range Sfynx which creates a very distinctive, textured effect using two different piles heights, a technology unique to Balta. Flatweave is increasingly fashionable and Balta has pushed fast forward into this segment of the market with a wide range of designs in solution-dyed polypropylene. These rugs are very resilient and can also be used outdoors (and hosed down to keep clean!). They are also reversal, giving the potential for two quite different design themes. Of particular note at the show was Timber, a flat woven range with a thicker, softer polypropylene yarn which has the very natural look of sisal. T +32 56 65 3811 • www.baltagroup.com

The Balta stand also featured a showcase of the Papilio handmade rugs range – a brand bought from Associated Weavers last year and which is now being strongly developed by Balta’s design studio in Belgium. This stylish collection of uniquely individual rugs has won several international design awards and although the range includes many high-end products, Balta’s aim is to make handmade works accessible to retailers by allowing low minimum order sizes across a range of affordable price points.

Cork innovation Granorte Innovator in cork, Granorte, used the Domotex trade fair to unveil a new concept in cork flooring with the global introduction of the TRENDcollection, a budget-driven cork collection that possesses all the benefits of the sustainable and natural material. Presented in a striking stand designed by renowned interior designer, Marco Carini, which gave an immersive voyage into a box-like cork shelter; TRENDcollection sees cork’s quiet and comfortable, water-resistant, wear-resistant and ecological benefits in a range of economical and easy to install floors. Discovering Granorte’s TRENDcollection, visitors were treated to a gallery-like experience inside the stand, with the collection’s 72 designs across four families. With SOLIDtrend’s floating rigid core construction, VINYLtrend’s proprietary vinyl top layer on an HDF core, DESIGNtrend’s direct digital print onto a cork top layer and NATURtrend’s cork floating floors and glue-down tiles; there is a TRENDcollection for every home. A new website, brand and identity and packaging concept, underline the significance of this development for Granorte. Paulo Rocha, product and R&D manager, Granorte, comments: “Marco Carini’s stand design provided a platform to showcase the variety of design and product available through our new TRENDcollection, which we have launched to place cork’s firm and clear benefits in the conscious of a new audience of homeowners and designers,” continues Paulo. “Significantly widening the appeal of this wonderful natural material, it’s a development that is sure to capitalise on the growing demand for natural and sustainable interior finishes.”

The Portuguese manufacturer also launched Granorte Colour Palette, representing fire, earth, wind and water through 28 colours available in the high-end Granorte Delivering Nature product family. The palette sees Naturals reorganised into 28 decors, new tones introduced in Decodalle, Recolour updated in all 28 colours and Vita Classic and Vita Décor experiencing new additions. Visitors to Granorte’s stand also witnessed the launch of a large-format wall tile in Carioca; made with a natural cork surface and bevels for a unique look. Unique technique LDP In a stand that buzzed with visitors throughout the show, Louis de Poortere showcased its 2019 Rug Collection at Domotex, revealing new styles that continue the Belgian maker’s reputation for rugs that achieve the delicate balance between style and affordability; seeing it become a ‘must have’ brand for homeowners. With the international launch of Uyuni, a collection inspired by the world’s largest salt flats in Bolivia, as well as new designs for the ever-popular Mad Men and superstylish Antiquarian, and the official launch of the Original Wilton Rugs programme; not only were visitors witness to fabulous new creations, but also the first to see Louis de Poortere’s 2019 collection in its entirety. Reflecting the thick, lithium-rich salt crust of Bolivia’s salt flats, Uyuni’s beautiful multilayered effects are achieved through cotton chenille in varying thread counts mixed with yarns of space-dyed wool. In two designs – linear Tunupa and the Chanel Tweed inspired Colchani – the development of the collection saw Louis de Poortere push its machinery hard, creating a technique that sees each machine-made rug different to the next. Response to the collection proved that the manufacturer has struck on something unique. The worn-effect given to library designs through the Antiquarian series has proved captivating for homeowners since its launch and Louis de Poortere used Domotex to present the next in the line, Antiquarian Ushak, referencing the work of the Turkish Ushak tribe of the same name. Mad Men too saw an addition in the five colourways of Fahrenheit 32 reflecting the marks left by skaters on New York’s famous Wollman Rink. Elsewhere for the Rug Collection 2019, Sari is another brand-new look inspired by the beauty of fabulous Indian silk fabrics. This bright and irregular striped pattern is presented in five colours. With these additions to the Rug Collection 2019, Domotex visitors could be forgiven for thinking they had seen everything new from Louis de Poortere, but it also had the worldwide reveal of Original Wilton Rugs. This programme sees woven wall-to-wall products and flatweave rugs become available in 10 stock rug sizes with a choice of three hand-finished edgings.

Riviera Home is fast becoming one of the leading brands for retailers who believe in the strengths of wool carpet and the company’s growing investment in serving the UK is well timed for the resurgence of interest in natural fibres. “We are doubling the number of our ranges this year and are already well ahead with preparations for launching our first phase in April 2019. Dressed to impress Telenzo

Telenzo created a sophisticated impact in Hanover with new launches that aim to impress at the quality end of the market in both their latest wool products and in premium man-made fibres. Delivering on increasing consumer demand for texture, the two new wool ranges are exemplary with Cormo offering a robust, modern 4-ply rib alongside Rya which is a sophisticated loop pile. Both carpets are right on trend for 2019 with lots of character in 100% undyed wool, 70% of which is New Zealand wool, making it feel soft and luxurious. Both are available in five natural shades and at 4 & 5m. The new Aspiration collection lives up to its name with two quite different, highly desirable ranges in top-quality 6.6 nylon. Aspiration Diamond is a smart, cut and loop graphic pattern in five colours that could work in both classic and modern interiors. Aspiration Vintage (pictured above) is something else again, creating a random pattern with a very large, and effectively invisible, repeat in the faded vintage style that is so fashionable today. This range was used in the entrance way to the stand at Domotex to great effect and is likely to have great take-up with style conscious consumers. Newcomers Loft and Traffic add new patterns to the portfolio in a 600g/m2 carpet while Mayfair, an extension to the popular Oxford collection, adds three new on-trend grey stripes with matching plains in Timzo’s poly natural yarn. The company is also extending its offer in the fashionable textured loop sector. Palermo is a smart, sophisticated new-low level loop product which is a first for Timzo while for extra weight and texture, there is the new Massive range which lives up to its name as a ¼ gauge large loop at 800g/m2. Other developments included the addition of Jumbo to Timzo’s contract collection and the re-launch of the Rio range with new colours on a new and coordinated design. BUSINESS NEWS Economic uncertainty haunts the market Anecdotal reports about just how much working capital in the flooring industry is tied up in filling the warehouses in anticipation of Brexit was backed up by a statement from Headlam, Europe’s largest floor covering distributor. In a trading statement to the city, Headlam said it had invested in additional stock across its fastest-moving products, “partially mitigating any potential disruption and help preserve customer service in the event of a hard Brexit.” Despite UK market weakness, Headlam expects to report final results for the year ended 31 December 2018 marginally ahead of 2017 and in-line with market expectations but added: “it is anticipated that underlying profit before tax in 2019 will be lower than 2018. Headlam Chief Executive Steve Wilson said: “In the face of a year which presents general uncertainty, a high degree of difficulty predicting any outcome, and an anticipation of further weakening in markets due to the wider economic environment, I believe we are taking a prudent view. Our intention is to maintain the dividend for 2019.” The world’s biggest flooring company, Mohawk industries, has announced an 11% decline in profits for 2018, even though sales were up 5.2% to a massive $10 billion. Mohawk has major business interests in the UK and Europe with brands including SmartStrand, EverStrand, Pergo, Quick-Step, Balterio, Moduleo and IVC. “After five consecutive years of record earnings, 2018 proved more difficult than we anticipated with inflation increasing dramatically, luxury vinyl tile impacting other flooring products and most of our markets slowing,” said chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lorberbaum. Carpetright has said its sales trends are improving but trading in the pre-Christmas period and the January sales season has been “negative” according to the company’s report of its third-quarter which ended January 26. The previous two quarters were badly hit by publicity surrounding the Carpetright rescue plan which saw sales down 17% during the summer and 9% down in the autumn. A company statement said however that “the trend has [now] improved from that of the first half” but added that “trading patterns have remained volatile week-to-week, against a backdrop of uncertainty and weak consumer confidence.” Victoria Plc has benefited from a £2 million windfall following the sale of a redundant sports field near its Kidderminster headquarters which now has planning consent for housing.

Flooring

Factsheet Adhesive Types Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticized PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors.

ADHESIVES

SELECTION CHECKLIST

The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time: The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked. Odour: Low odour, solvent free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.

Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels.

Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.

Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive.

Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.

Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.

Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured. Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but

this criteria must be checked where appropriate. Subfloor: What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard. Whilst there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces. The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation. Special Performance: Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments. Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.

Isn’t it time for a change of tack.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will...

• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Combination

Crumb

PU foam

www.interfloor.com

Types

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling. Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter

• shedding • pulled loops

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Static

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 60

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment. THE STOCKLISTS March 2019

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a

‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions

ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS March 2019

Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.
