Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Regular Maintenance
Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.
Periodic Cleaning
When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.
If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE- approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package: WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth • Scoop up or scrape off solids
Chemspec Europe is one of the first WOOLSAFE Licensees in the UK to have a ‘green’ product certified. It is expected that other products will follow shortly.
For the widest range of WOOLSAFE approved products www.chemspec-europe.com

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT ru b
• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge
• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer
Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats
The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.
Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.) Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.
N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
The original carpet tile
SHEDDING
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.
6
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
• shedding • pulled loops
SPROUTING
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
SHADING
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
STATIC
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. include the measures Preventative introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.
A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990). THE STOCKLISTS April 2009

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.
The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.
The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course. THE STOCKLISTS April 2009
FLATTENING
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
SOILING
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages
- Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil
carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.
T HE R EGENCY
Collection
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
WOVEN
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.
Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is BONDED Tip Sheared Level Loop Tip Sheared Level Loop Sheared Level Loop plain colours. a versatile, textured finish that is idealTipfor Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velve t • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have not stitched into the backing in any way. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.interfloor.com
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.
www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
Benefits
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards
How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Combination
14
Crumb
PU foam
www.floorwise.co.uk
Types Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

We tick all the boxes!
Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to.
Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours.
A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line.
Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.
As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others.
the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality
Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.
Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of the product range to consumers with a market-leading modular POS system which they will deliver and design to suit your store.
Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.
Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers to provide products and services that ticks all the boxes.
Investing in quality and service

News Ancient and modern Momentum King James’s School in Almondbury is celebrating its 400th year, yet has chosen to keep right up to date by selecting Momentum carpet from Heckmondwike FB.
Built in 1608, the school took the decision to create a refreshingly up-to-date look to its new IT suite. After careful consideration, Momentum from Heckmondwike FB was felt to offer the best allround performance. The range is available in 12 colours and features a striking crisscross design. As well as being hardwearing and therefore suitable for heavy traffic, Momentum offers antistatic properties, which was a requirement for the new IT suite. Momentum has passed the ISO 6356 Body Walking Test that is an assessment of static electrical propensity and is therefore suitable for computer rooms. The British-made heavy contract broadloom carpet will not ravel or fray and its dust-trapping properties will again provide huge benefits to the school. T 01924 406 161

Can-do adhesive from Floorwise Powerful performance in a can is the name of the game for Floorwise’s range of fitter friendly spray adhesives. Floorwise F599 Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive is a multi-tasking wonder, capable of sticking everything from carpet tiles to PU underlay, felt underlay, cork and paper to substrates ranging from wood to concrete, stone, brickwork and plaster.
F599 features more adhesive than comparable cans from other suppliers, meaning a better and thicker coverage per can. In fact, F599 can cover up to 3m2 from a 500ml can with a stronger bond. And more adhesive means less solvents to dry out, so F599 takes just 30 seconds to develop tack in the summer months and in our inclement winters, the performance is even better with F599 taking just a fifth of the time when compared to most other sprays. F599 is joined by Floorwise’s new F592 Contact Spray Adhesive, which has been formulated to bond carpets, carpet tiles, most vinyl floorcoverings, PVC skirting, fabrics, cork, paper, underlay, felts and much more.
With a high solids/low solvent ratio, just like its heavy duty F599 sibling, F592 offers great coverage from a 500ml can with a thick coating of up to 3m2 giving a strong bond that gives complete peace of mind. 30

‘Best chance’ to buy into business With a record number of flooring companies losing money, and overall business values plummeting to the extent that almost half are now worth less than half their value of 12 months ago, it’s difficult to find much good news. However a new study by industry analysts Plimsoll Publishing, suggests that the current economic downturn represents one of the biggest opportunities in a generation, if you have the courage and the capital.
The study has rated each of the UK’s leading 1000 Floor Coverings companies on their acquisition attractiveness. It found that 137 companies are “ripe for the picking” based on a combined scoring system, incorporating overall financial strength, ownership, valuation and future potential. These 137 companies are all privately owned, yet are showing a serious deterioration in the financial performance.
“The current market conditions have presented an unprecedented set of opportunities to buy into a business that even a year ago would have been unaffordable.” David Pattison, Senior Analyst at Plimsoll, explains the results, “What we have indentified here is a group of ‘wounded animals’, many of these businesses have a long and distinguished history, yet their recent performance has deteriorated. By definition these are classic acquisitions. Anyone looking to grow their own company through acquisition should be looking for businesses that are currently undervalued yet, with help, can be turned around.”
However, as Pattison points out, “this will not be easy. Many will need rapid and deep cost cutting to get them back on a firm financial footing. We could see as many as 3000 jobs go over the next 12 to 24 months as these companies shrink to ensure their survival.” Yet despite this dour prediction Pattison sees a massive opportunity in the UK Floor Coverings market. “The current market conditions have presented an unprecedented set of opportunities to buy into a business that even a year ago would have been unaffordable. We know of at least 537 companies within the industry, who have the cash to spend and could aid these 137 ailing businesses and ensure their survival.” T 01642 626400 32

The British Wool column British Wool launch new consumer website – aboutwool.com British Wool has launched a brand new website designed specifically for the consumer. The website – aboutwool.com has taken a strong lead from the highly successful About Wool brochure which has enjoyed a lot of praise from the carpet industry. Offering simple, easy to understand and easy to find information about wool in a user friendly format, the website has a smart and design-led appearance. An appealing screen style keeps key facts and information streamlined and uses current photography to maintain a contemporary image for British Wool carpet and other products.
The website includes a new ‘British Wool Look Book’ with mood board style room interpretations and aims to offer information and inspiration to wool consumers. Also included is an up-to-date list of British Wool licensed manufacturers with links to their corporate websites for easy access.
aboutwool.com new website
“We wanted to meet the needs of wool consumers, many of which are increasingly using the web to search for information and product sources. The website is smart and straight forward to ensure that the consumer can get to the information they want quickly without losing interest and it offers direct connections to our licensed manufacturers to make everything very easy,” explained Irfan Khan, Promotions Manager at the BWMB.
Brintons launch design inspiration service
Brintons have recently launched their latest beautiful advertising image which forms part of their Seasons Collection. Summer by Brintons is making appearances in leading interiors consumer magazines and as part of this campaign, Brintons has launched a unique Design Inspiration Service, specifically developed to help consumers find their ideal decorating scheme this summer.
The Brintons Design Team has identified five key themes for 2009; the themes are built around different shades and taken their lead from current trends in the market. At Brintons, trend research is an on-going process. They look at everything from product at interiors trade shows to visiting art galleries, studying high street trends and watching the seasonal fashion shows.“Even films, music and events influence trends in colour and design,” said Kelly Butler, Design Manager. Brintons Moodboard
The latest trends can be viewed on the Brintons website www.brintons.net/inspiration, where samples can also be ordered to help consumers plan the perfect summer scheme.
An exciting addition for the consumer is that Brintons is also offering to create a mood board to an individual consumer’s brief for a fee of £25.This will incorporate their fabric and a selection of six carpets chosen for them – the fee is refundable if the consumer then buys a carpet before June 2009 (terms and conditions apply). “We want to add value and help the carpet retailer and the consumer to achieve the best possible results in selecting a Brintons carpet. The Design Inspiration Service is a great way to help consumers address flooring as an inclusive part of their overall decor,” said Rita Bancroft, Marketing Communications Manager.
Small pockets of opportunity
According to figures released by the Department for Communities and Local Government, the average cost of a detached house rose by 4.9% between December 2008 and January 2009, thereby bucking the downward trend but the price of a terraced house dropped by an average 2.3% during the same period and flats by 1.8%. As predicted by the market analysts, the bottom end of the market is feeling the crunch harder than the top. That’s not really news but it is information.Where good wool carpet is concerned, the consumer profile is probably mid to upper end in both age and pocket. So whilst trade is extremely tough, we should be aware that there are pockets of prosperity and opportunity out there.
About British Wool for Carpets brochure
Marketing tools such as the new aboutwool.com website, the About Wool brochures which are available to retailers and the design inspiration service offered by Brintons, as well as excellent sample services and comprehensive websites from other British manufacturers can all be a major help to carpet consumers, so please take full advantage of them in your showroom.

Boost for budget underlay Novostrat says that the uncertain economic situation in UK and Ireland is greatly favouring their sales of ‘Graphite’ economy carpet underlay.
‘Graphite’ is a robust, ‘no frills’, solid value for money carpet underlay. It is produced in polyethylene foam which is 7mm thick and as such provides a particularly comfortable cushion underfoot. Graphite has a very low tog rating and is able to work perfectly with underfloor heating systems, and being so light in weight it is ideal for ease of storage, transportation and, of course, installation. Michael Hanrahan, Sales and Marketing Director for Novostrat, says “It is quite noticeable at the moment how the market is gravitating towards the ‘value’ products not necessarily the cheapest, but those which offer optimum performance at the most realistic prices. Fortunately our Graphite carpet underlay was always intended to occupy that market position but we could never have expected it to have been so in demand so soon. “We now have Graphite positioned for sale through retailers and distributors throughout the UK and Ireland”, he said. retailers respond to industry issues
“Dodgy discounters are damaging our industry” What retailers really think about selling quality carpet in a recession. The pressure’s on to sell on price - and industry commentators have been critical of independent retailers for being too quick to compromise margins to get a sale at any cost. We asked our readers at the sharp end of High Street selling to respond to the charge. In The Stocklists Flooring Forum survey, most retailers denied selling on price with 46% saying that a third or more of their sales were not sold on price and a further 21% saying maybe half their sales were price-led.
But a Northern retailer commented: “We are our own worst enemies we often under-estimate what our customers are prepared to spend, and all too often if we are told that a competitor will do a deal for £X, are too quick to say we will do it for less.We should sell the quality of our service and products instead of focussing on the £ signs!”
Key results
Selling on price? 67% of retailers say most carpet is not sold solely on price.
67% 80% 70% 57% 29% 8% 84%
80% of retailers believe most consumers can be traded up. 70% said the recession had made consumers more price sensitive.
57% agreed that the quality end of the market is holding up well. Only 29% said consumers were prepared to pay a premium for quality.
Only 8% of retailers thought there was enough consumer knowledge. 84% of retailers blame the ‘sheds’ for devaluing carpet. The Stocklists polled 293 retailers throughout the UK in March 2009. Replies and comments are recorded anonymously. Many thanks to all those who took part last month! 38
April 2009
It was that discounting policy of retail part trading ‘sheds’ that came in for most venom in the survey. 84% blame these discounters for devaluing carpet. “Prices being inflated by national companies to show high discounts does nothing but damage the integrity of the whole carpet retail industry,” said one respondent and another asked for action: “People believe far too much in 75% discounts. It should not be allowed and should be price checked by trading standards. The sooner we stop this, the sooner the carpet trade will benefit.” But a Southern retailer noted that discounts did help pull people in: “but it is then down to the sales staff to make the sale. Most customers have little idea how a carpet will perform but good sales training can ensure we only sell products which suit and meet the customer's expectations.” Training emerged as a big issue in the debate with 46% of retailers rating it a primary issue in generating higher value sales – more important than enhanced point-of-sale presentation, for example.
Perhaps surprisingly, better product information from manufacturers rated top in the list of retailers requirements to help them up-sell carpets – ahead even of better product ranges and point-of-sale. One Midlands retailer had a swipe at manufacturers representatives. “The majority of reps don't know enough about the products they are selling, many of them are more interested in talking about golf handicaps and their holidays,” he said.
But retailers are generally positive about price. While most agreed the recession had made consumers more price sensitive, a strong 80% believe that consumers were capable of being traded up and only 11% said the economic climate meant that selling higher volumes of cheaper carpet was more important.
But margin is a more complex issue as one Northern retailer commented: “I think it’s difficult to up-sell when the pressure is on just to get the order - being mindful also that most times there is more profit in a wholesale value wool twist than in a higher-end wool twist.”
There was a sense in the survey responses that the retail industry has been ‘dumbing down’. A carpet professional in the South commented: “It is far too easy to become a ‘retailer’ today than it ever was. No capital required. No premises required.Wholesalers are more than happy to take any business without question”. A large Scottish retailer commented:

Page 39
“More exclusivity is required. At present anyone and his dog can access too many ranges. The large distributors are ruining the marketplace and wasting miles of carpet on duplicated pattern books.”
If there is dumbing down in the trade, the question is raised about how smart consumers are about carpet. 69% of retailers agreed that consumers did not know enough to buy on quality and a disgruntled Northerner commented: “I think more of the money raised by the Carpet Foundation could be used to educate the customer rather than than telling the trade what they are supposedly doing wrong.”
We also asked retailers what they felt were the key selling points for promoting better quality carpet. Design and colour ranked with durability and appearance retention as the headliners but, perhaps more surprisingly, feel and texture was low on the list and stain-resistance only ranked with 14% as a key sales motivator. So the lessons learned from the first Flooring Forum? Consumers can be traded up but they don’t know enough to respond without well-trained guidance from retailers.
“Don't forget to ask questions, to find out what customers need, not just what you think they would like,” said one battlehardened retailer. “In these uncertain times we must remain positive. If you have what the consumer wants - they'll buy. Business on the whole is not that bad!,” said another.

The Flooring Forum is a new service from The Stocklists to help the industry talk to itself about key issues including marketing, service, products, quality and the environment. Retailers respond to an online survey and are also encouraged to leave ‘soapbox’ comments. The anonymity of responses is preserved so that retailers can say what they really think.

News Osmo reaches the parts... Osmo UK, the eco-friendly wood and finishes expert, has introduced a single-disc machine that removes even the smallest specks of dirt from wood that other machines usually miss – FloorXcenter.
Designed to keep wooden floors clean and looking in good condition, FloorXcenter is an easy to use machine which both professionals and do-it-yourself users can use. Unlike the traditional large and heavy machines, FloorXcenter is small enough to be lifted and carried around. “We realise how frustrating it can be when you can’t thoroughly clean and maintain your floor,” says Steve Grimwood, MD of Osmo UK. “So we have developed FloorXcenter to eliminate the testing process of cleaning. By using rotation, it can reach the smallest spaces in the wood structure, guaranteeing effective cleaning results. This product is ideal for the cleaning and maintenance of large areas of commercial or residential flooring.” FloorXcenter has several extra pads to fulfil different functions. When cleaning, the white pad or brush is used and works in combination with the cleaning agent and the mechanical movement of the machine. Because wooden floors mustn’t get too wet, FloorXcenter has a soap dispenser which enables the user to control how much of the pre-loaded cleaner is used. T 01296 481220

Charity crunched as recession bites The Furnishing Trades' Benevolent Association (FTBA) is seeing growing evidence of financial hardship caused by the recession - an increasing number of grant applications are coming from furnishing industry workers struggling to make ends meet as a result of the economic downturn.
Said FTBA chief executive Charles Kerrigan: “It was inevitable that the FTBA would feel the aftershocks of the downturn and applications coming through are beginning to reflect just how tough it is out there.”

As a further measure of help for those struggling to cope, the FTBA’s board of directors has also increased the level of help made to those in receipt of weekly grant payments. From April 1 the payment for a single person rises to £12 a week and for a couple, £20.
Said Charles: “It is likely that we will see more and more applications from people affected by the recession over the coming months. It makes it all the more imperative that those in a position to do so, support our fundraising initiatives so we can continue to offer help to the growing number of people experiencing real financial hardship.”

Feature Fit for Purpose Co-founded by the Contract Flooring Association (CFA) and the National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers (NICF) FITA is the leading training organisation for the industry, both the commercial (CFA) and domestic (NICF) markets.
During this time of uncertainty you may think that training is not the top priority for your business, however it may well be that by taking the opportunity to train it will make you or your company more attractive to prospective clients – something not to be sneezed at during the credit crunch.
Most people looking to employ the services of installation experts will expect them to be at the top of their field and if you are able to promote that you or your fitters are highly trained it will set you apart from your opposition. FITA has made a conscious effort to remain competitive during these trying times and ran a Winter Promotion on the Solid Wood Sanding and Finishing Course. Due to the success of that promotion we are now running a Spring Promotion on the Basic Carpet Fitting Course. The cost of the five day course has been reduced by 20%, a very significant saving indeed.
If you do find that things are a little quiet at the moment now is certainly the time to consider training. You may well have already found yourself in the position of knowing you need some training but your diary is so full you just can’t fit the training in. Many people have already seen training as a positive step forward as the take up of places on our training courses has increased by 115% on the same period last year.
“Many people have already seen training as a positive step forward as the take up of places on training courses has increased by 115% on the same period last year.
FITA takes great pride in the facilities available at its training centre at Loughborough, with constant modification and refurbishment of the fitting bays, the most up to date tools being on hand for use and information on products and materials accessible in the library. Our latest improvement to the centre is the installation of a new heating system. The old system unfortunately broke down in January during the extreme cold snap and we were most fortunate that the installation of the new one took place very quickly and without causing disruption to our training schedule. Flower on Flooring
by Dennis Flower
How green is your carpet? With consumers and businesses alike becoming increasingly environmentally aware, the flooring industry needs to be aware of the potential benefits.
These include reducing costs of waste disposal and lowering energy consumption, both of which can help companies to improve cash flow. Where carpet is concerned, the use of natural products lend themselves easily to recycling. Carpet Recycling UK is the trade association formed in 2008 aiming to divert carpet waste from landfill, sponsored primarily by 15 carpet manufacturers and 14 other value chain businesses, including raw material suppliers, retailers and recyclers. The carpet industry has a post consumer recycling rate of less than 1%, well below the level of other products.
Flooring retailers and contractors will be aware of the impact of packaging regulations and the associated disposal costs, says CRUK. Segregation of waste products at source reduces cost and carpets are no exception, so the association is developing schemes with collection and recycling partners aimed at maximising the value recovered from carpets. More members are required to improve the rate of recycling, which is showing growth in some areas of the UK. Fees start at £300 per year for small businesses.
Where carpet manufacturers are concerned, Brintons states that it is actively involved in working to reduce the level of textile waste going to landfill. Focus is given to recycling waste generated during each stage of production, delivery, and post sale. The company is also working on a number of recycling initiatives in conjunction with Carpet Recycling UK and other companies in three main areas. These include the production of other textile based products‚ such as underlay and insulation materials‚ energy reclamation and agriculture. Brintons already collects discontinued carpet samples from retailers when new ranges are launched and encourages retailers to ensure these are not thrown away as they can be usefully reprocessed. Brockway Carpets is one of Carpet Recycling UK's most recent members, underlining its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its activities wherever possible. But looking into recycling is also a hard-nosed business decision, according to production director Nick Walley: 'If we don't develop alternatives to landfill, it's highly likely the carpet industry will eventually be taxed in the same way as other areas of the economy, like the electrical and electronic equipment and packaging industries, for disposal of our waste products.' To this end Brockway is investigating with CRUK how to extract and re-use fibre from carpet edge trimmings, and looking into end uses for the fibre dust created during the shearing operation. It appears its best potential may be as a fertiliser.
‘From the retailer's point of view, until an infrastructure is established which will return value to the used carpet, there is not much they can do yet to recycle it.This is CRUK's prime objective, and our reason for being a member. It is a mammoth undertaking and if CRUK succeeds they will have earned the industry's gratitude,' Walley concluded.
The Mohawk Group is another member of Carpet Recycling UK and has also undertaken a number of green issues within its own production cycles. Reasoning that recycled content should be used for carpet manufacture, with focus also given on how it is recycled at the end of its life, the company has established its closed loop recycling initiative. This ensures materials are constantly recycled and do not enter landfill. The Mohawk Group has accordingly established its Encycle carpet tile backing, ReCover recycling programme and its GreenWorks recycling facility. Its Encycle is claimed to be the first and only non-PVC carpet tile that can be recycled without separating the face fibre from the backing layers, using less energy and saving resources. Using 35% pre-consumer recycled

“If we don't develop alternatives to landfill, it's highly likely the carpet industry will eventually be taxed in the same way as other areas of the economy” content (by total product weight), it also contains a minimum of 2% biobased renewable content and uses no plasticisers.
The ReCover programme handles the logistics of old carpet removal, hence making it more probable that it will enter the recycling scheme. The company's GreenWorks facility is capable of processing nylon 6, nylon 6.6 and polypropylene. It processes these fibres, the backing and latex and recovers about 90% of materials into useable products. The facility ensures that as much recycled product as possible is recycled and reused in the production of new carpets.
Wools of New Zealand reports that it is engaged in an extensive ongoing project to ensure the long-term sustainability of the wool carpet industry. Detailed research has been carried out globally to create a clear picture of market factors relating to the growing, processing and marketing of wool textiles. It has also completed a global survey of the value chain to understand where the market opportunities lie. Carpet recycling is clearly a key priority to the industry in order to be able to deliver truly sustainable solutions, says WONZ. Wool is a naturally renewable and biodegradable product, but gets contaminated with polyamides and other synthetic materials that hinder its purity and the industry must take responsibility and address this.
It has also elected to support Carpet Recycling UK to find end-of-life solutions for wool-rich products. Wools of New Zealand believes it is not only the ethical thing to do, but also critical to continued market access for wool-based products. It is therefore providing research data and access to government agents for lobbying purposes. WONZ further states it is working with the entire value chain to ensure every stage of the process is adding value to the consumer experience of sustainable lifestyles. April 2009

OF THE TRADE
Claire Crooks - Solent Wholesale
Age: 44 Job Title: Financial Director Years with present company: 27 Years in flooring industry: 27 Main non-work interests: Holidays around world - never the same place twice!
Conditions are very turblent and difficult at present. It refocuses the mind and we are working really hard to get our share of the market.
When do you expect an upturn in the economy generally?
We believe 2009 still to be a difficult year with hopefully a start of improvement by the end of this year.We need to change people’s minds and create a feeling of optimism again, as this crisis is also a psychological one.
“ What's the key market issue/challenge today?
Challenges today are to get retailers to remember that generally independent wholesalers are keener on price than the bigger groups. Look at nett prices not what discounts you get.
What’s the single most important key to success in flooring?
We keep extra stock in when it’s quiet. With retailers working off an empty order book, they want a carpet immediately if a customer rings up. And most disappointed you?
Moving into our new premises in 2007 being ready to be able to do vast amount of cuts a day with our new machine and going into the recession just when we are at our best.
What was your first job in flooring?
Thrown in right in the deep end - Sales Representative - at the time one of the first women on the road.
Would you advise a member of your family to come into the flooring industry?
“
How would you describe current markets conditions now, compared to a year ago?
Yes - in fact Stefani McHale who is my niece has been with us now for a year and she has settled in well.
To have enthusiasm and real interest in what you are selling.
Are wholesalers more or less important to the trade than they were five years ago?
Loyalty has a big part in companies that impress me, and when we were struck with a flood in 1994 and lost all our stock some suppliers pulled out all the stops to help us and they included Victoria Carpets who lent us a cutting machine to get us up and running again.
What’s the future of wholesaling distribution?
Which companies in the trade most impress you?
What’s your favourite flooring product (yours or someone elses?)
I am a huge lover of 80%/20% wool twists. Apart from looking excellent on the floor they are the basis of our success, we have over 34 wool twists in our stock ranges.
If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what would it be?
Not to be so blinkered. Some retailers get into a habit in ordering from the same wholesale.Take the blinkers off and see what good value a distributor like ourselves is compared to the big groups.
What has changed most in the last 5-10 years?
The opinions of the suppliers to the independents. Suppliers are now realising it is best to spread their ranges throughout the sector not just sticking with the big groups. We can generally get a better book to sales ratio.
In all your time in the trade, what has most surprised you?
When we had our flood in 1994 and for two months worked with no stock, how loyal some of our customers were and changed their working pratices to fit in with us.
from The Stocklists
We are more important than ever at the moment with retailers working with such an empty order book. If a customer rings up and they are available to fit, they want the carpet immediately and that’s where we come in.We keep more stock in when times are quiet for that reason alone. It’s always good to have a choice and there will always be room for the independent wholesaler. We are all unique and have something different to offer but obviously some are better than others. We strive to do our best in everything and I personally think we have the best staff in the warehouse, sales office staff that go out of their way to assist customers, friendliest/helpful drivers and knowledgeable reps in our sector.
Are manufacturers paying enough attention to servicing wholesalers? They are now, with the climate as it is, and now some of the bigger groups are going into manufacturing, the suppliers are realising we can do a good job for them even though we might not be as big. The volumes we acheive on some of the products from Balta are huge especially Gala which is a product that has just been relaunched in 4m/5m felt/SB, 4m gel.

News Grandeur luxury and lustre Balterio’s successful ChromeZone technology, which was first introduced on the Magnitude collection, is also being used on the new Grandeur collection. A subtle lustre in the wood’s pores is combined with a matt finish for a very natural look and feel. The combination of a long and wide plank with mattchrome ChromeZone finish on a 9mm thickness emphasises the perception of real wooden planks. The effect of long and wide planks is further reinforced by the 4-side V-groove. All these features make Grandeur extremely suitable for voluminous spaces like large areas and spacious lofts. In this collection Balterio introduces a “fall-down” installation system for easy installation. Grandeur is available in five contemporary decors: Renaissance Oak, Old French Oak, Wellington Oak,Victorian Oak and Hermitage Oak. Grandeur’s core is a high-quality, 9mm hydrosafe-HDF plank that offers very good stability and has a standard guarantee ranging from 12 to 25 years, depending on the use. Grandeur will be an important eye-catcher for Balterio at several construction fairs including Mosbuild (Russia) and Batimat (France). T +32 56 62 8081 www.balterio.com
‘Beat of the East’ for rugs
Decade of cleaner carpets
RugMark is once again running a major rug design competition aimed at college and university design and textile students, following the success of its 2008 competition. The design brief, this year is highly topical and commercial. Entitled The Beat of the East, participants are invited to take inspiration from the exotic mood board provided and create a unique and commercial design for a 9 x 6 feet hand-knotted rug.
The Woolsafe Organisation marked the 10th anniversary of its Certified Operators Network at this year’s Cleaning Show at the NEC, promoting its range of services to visitors including carpet maintenance professionals and chemical companies.
WovenGround.com and 100% Design are both sponsoring the competition. Winners will have the chance to exhibit their design at 100% Design in September and the first prize student will also take a trip to Nepal to see their design on the loom.
Sam Towle, Director of RugMark is appealing for as many students as possible to get involved: “This year’s live brief is visually hot and so topical given the heightened interest in India following the recent success of the film Slumdog Millionaire; I think it should appeal to students, whilst providing them with a real design challenge.”
All entries must be submitted by June 1st 2009 and full details of the competition are available from www.rugmark.org.uk

What proved to be a hugely successful three days, the Woolsafe stand enjoyed a constant stream of visitors from start to finish, with many cleaning professionals looking to sign up for their well respected training courses, and chemical companies eager to put forward their products for independent testing.
In addition to this unprecedented success, Woolsafe also used the show to recognise an important milestone reached by the organisation and the founding members of the Certified Operators Network.
The first training course on specialist wool carpet care took place at the end of 1998 and by March of 1999, the first companies had joined what soon became a national network of highly skilled and qualified carpet care professionals.
“The fact that we have celebrated the continued success of several founding members at this year’s Cleaning Show just underlines the advantage of being involved in the Certified Operators Network,” comments Paul Bakker, Managing Director of The Woolsafe Organisation. “With strict qualification criteria, members of the Network have already proved that they are among the best in their field, showing true professionalism in their work and now, some 10 years on, their membership continues to prove that this, combined with the support and promotion offered by The Woolsafe Organisation, is a recipe for success.” T 0800 731 5688
