Continuing to offer exceptional durability and value thanks to its role within the Essenz family, the style features a two-ply stain-resistant yarn strong enough for family life. Still available in 40oz Supreme and 50oz Elite qualities, the bleach-cleanable Star Twist is all-set to bring homes a classic twist style with 10-year stain and 10-year wear warranties. Also ready to up the game in 2019, come 15 new mottled effects in Heather Twist, building on the extensive colour refresh in 2016. Again, in Supreme and Elite qualities and with four and five-metre widths, the carpet features 10-year stain and seven-year wear promises. Get the Silento treatment Made in Belgium by IVC, the Itec Silento Timber collection of heterogeneous vinyl flooring features a special acoustic foam backing that reduces impact sound by 18dB. Ideal for use in student accommodation, education and social housing, the floor is available in a range of realistic wood looks that create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Including a suite of on-trend grey woods alongside classic oak looks and space-enhancing wide-plank effects, Silento Timber provides excellent scope for finding the ideal wood look without compromising on sounddeadening performance. All floors within the collection are also equipped with T-emboss, a new mechanical emboss that makes the striking wood effects more authentic through sharper clarity and a better matt look with less light reflectance. With reduced surface texture and combined with Hyperguard+, T-emboss also makes cleaning easier, provides improved stain and slip properties and gives excellent abrasion performance. With Hyperguard+, all floors in the Silento Timber collection are protected from dirt and stains and remain easy to maintain throughout their lifetime, requiring no specialist care. The permanent polyurethane treatment makes Silento Timber ideal when specialist cleaning schedules and intensive maintenance are not regularly achievable, such as in social housing and student accommodation buildings. As well as reducing sound for a more comfortable environment, Silento Timber achieves a Class 33 Heavy Commercial use rating, giving suitability for demanding public areas such as corridors or receptions where two and four-metre width options can help to minimise waste or reduce seams respectively. With Invisiweld, the wood-look integrity of the Silento Timber collection can also be enhanced with a flush seam that’s also stronger and thereby less prone to failure than traditional hot weld. The Silento Timber collection is available in depth at distributors across the UK and samples can be ordered directly from the website for fast delivery across the UK. NEWS Get your skates on! Inspired by the heyday of advertising in 1960s New York and with designs such as Griff, Jacob’s Ladder and Cracks; Mad Men is Louis de Poortere’s best-selling rug collection. For 2019, Mad Men sees a brand-new design inspired by the bitter winds of late fall and winter in Manhattan, where chills and polar vortexes bring frost, snow and ice to the city’s streets. Referencing freezing point, Fahrenheit 32 evokes the marks left by skaters on the ice of the city’s Wollman Rink, a famous public ice rink in Central Park. Woven in an artful blend of high-gloss polyester and cotton chenille, Fahrenheit 32 continues the collection’s strong story. Alan Russell, sales director UK, Louis de Poortere, explains: “Our designers saw the iconic slogans and advertising campaigns dreamt up in agencies across the Manhattan skyline in the 1960s as a perfect moment-in-time to be the inspiration for some really energetic and vibrant designs. Felling modern, yet capturing the mid-century spirit, Mad Men has grown into our best-selling collection and we’re delighted to add a brand-new design to give even more depth to the range.” Just like the rest of the Mad Men collection, Fahrenheit 32 comes in a range of sizes from 80 x 150cm up to 280 x 360cm. Hand-finished and with a natural latex anti-slip backing, the style is available in five striking colourways; Polar Vortex, New York Fall, Wind Chill Grey, Central Park Green and Pecan Frost. Tune into Tweed Stainfree Tweed is the latest of the Abingdon Flooring collection to benefit from the next generation yarn for a softer feel that’s no less impressive against dirt and spills. With an improved PP yarn tufted in a finer 1/10th gauge for a softer and denser feel, Stainfree Tweed’s subtle pattern is a popular choice thanks to its ‘all over’ effect and versatility, working well in modern and classic interiors alike. Presented in a new colourbank that comprises 10 traditional shades and 10 on-trend greyish tones, the carpet is ready to create a fabulous new look in any home. The new Stainfree Tweed is also great news for fitters, with the Soft Fleece Bac helping to minimise damage to skirtings and making the carpet easier to manoeuvre. Cleverly, the fleece back also heightens the perception of softness for feeler samples on displays and lecterns. In 2m, 2.5m, 4m and 5m widths, the carpet can be selected in a size to minimise waste and deliver even more value. Featuring a Lifetime stain warranty, there is no doubt that Stainfree Tweed is ready to take on life in busy family homes, where it’s versatility and durability come into their own: “Stainfree Tweed is a great all-rounder, offering an all-over look that can be used throughout the home and a quality that’s ready to endure busy family life,” says Martin Peace, sales director, Abingdon Flooring. “With a softer yarn and a 20-strong colour palette, the new style Tweed is a great addition to the Stainfree family and one that’s sure to enjoy fans right across the country.” With a 10-year wear warranty and a Contract rating, Stainfree Tweed is now available for retailers looking to enjoy the latest generation of carpets backed by Abingdon Flooring’s famous Stainfree for Life promise. Putting the ‘AW’ into AWARENESS!
Associated Weavers has demonstrated strong market leadership in sustainability with the launch of SEDNA, a remarkable new carpet brand that taps into topical concerns on the plastic pollution of the oceans.
New SEDNA super soft carpet saves marine life AW is promoting Sedna as “super soft carpet saving marine life” and backs up that claim with convincing evidence and compelling imagery that is going to have a major impact on carpet consumers in 2019. Sedna is manufactured from Econyl, a regenerated nylon yarn made from recycled waste material such as old carpets and abandoned fishing nets.
SEDNA’s marketing is led by unique, dramatic marine imagery
3.6m tonnes of carpet go into landfill every year “ along with 640,000 tons of fishing industry waste. We have to stop this. ” Julio Bonazzi of Aquafil
Every year, some 640,000 tons of fishing equipment made mainly from nylon are abandoned in the oceans. Environmentalists call them “ghost nets” as they continue to catch, damage and kill marine live including dolphins, seals and turtles. Associated Weavers has teamed up with worldleading nylon recovery company Aquafil who make Econyl and also with ‘Healthy Seas’ – a volunteer organisation with more than 100 divers worldwide who have so far recovered more than 375 tonnes of this waste fishing material – nylon that has been regenerated into usable fibre for 350,000m2 of carpet.
An intenrational audience of more than 250 attended the high profile premiere of SEDNA in Ghent, Belgium 26 January 2019

A SPECIAL REPORT FROM THE STOCKLISTS by David Spragg
Plenty more fish in the sea? The setting for the Sedna product launch in Ghent was appropriate as modern plastic was invented by Leo Baekeland who was born in the medieval Flemish town and taught chemistry at its university for many years. He discovered the process to synthesise a polymer from phenol and formaldehyde to make a rigid synthetic material, bakelite. This process was patented in 1909. Since then, 8 billion tonnes of plastic has been produced but a staggering 6 billion tonnes of it has been thrown away. A proportion of that waste ends up in the marine environment and while we are familiar with the phrase “there are plenty more fish in the sea” it is a shock to appreciate that by 2050 it is estimated that there will be more plastic in the sea than fish!
Visitors from countries across Europe were keen to get their hands on this super soft polyamide
Rare marine life is at the mercy of nylon waste
AW UK Managing Director Gavin Pugh shows a carpet specially commissioned for the launch event featuring marine life.
Speaking at the European launch of Sedna brand in Ghent in December, the AW CEO Erik Deporte said: “We always try to go to the market with the right product at the right time. There is a growing awareness of the need for sustainability and we want to contribute to that. People are looking at all the news and documentaries and there is a real momentum – we have chosen an ideal moment to launch this product.”
AW CEO Erik Deporte
The POS does not pull its punches. Alongside stunning, specially commissioned underwater photography there are graphic images of sea life being damaged by plastic waste. British audiences will make an immediate connection with David Attenborough’s shocking Blue Planet documentaries and the AW Sedna product gives consumers a real option of something they can do to help – and a great story for retailers to encourage consumers to buy a premium product. The UK will see Sedna in the summer of 2019, initially with two ranges – Varuna, a tenth-gauge 2-ply solution dyed nylon range in 14 colours with a dense, short-pile with a superb finish; and also Yara, a beautiful and luxurious, deep pile 90oz carpet in 12 colours.
A beautiful yarn with a very different story The company that creates Econyl from waste polyamide is Italian-based Aquafil that has 15 plants worldwide in eight countries including the UK. It is one of the world’s leading producers of polyamide (Nylon 6). The CEO and founder of Aquafil is Julio Bonazzi: “3.6 million tonnes of carpet go into landfill every year along with 640,000 tons of fishing industry waste. We have to stop this. We have to change the way we do things,” he said. “If we do, the result can be beautiful products. Mr Bonazzi cited brand leaders like Adidas, Stella McCartney, Gucci, Levis, Speedo and H&M who use the Econyl yarn for on-trend fashion items. “Econyl is a beautiful yarn with a very different story. There is no compromise, it is normal nylon. It is infinitely sustainable and really is the circular economy in action. We make new products without taking more resources from the planet,’ said Mr Bonazzi.
from The Stocklists
UK Managing Director Gavin Pugh commented: “Even without such a strong story behind it, these are going to be seen as seriously good carpets but I think the environmental credentials are going to get more and more traction in future.” Regenerated polyamide is no compromise on performance or quality – the technology delivers a nylon fibre that is in every way identical to the original. The recovery process is a little more expensive than virgin nylon but AW has announced that they will absorb the additional costs to ensure competitive pricing. AW has a 3-year exclusive deal with Aquafil to use Econyl for soft, residential carpets. And adding to the impeccable environmental credentials of Sedna, the carpets will be backed by AW’s FusionBac – a material made from recycled PET plastic bottles which has a soft touch that is popular with fitters and consumers alike. Balta is leading on luxury Balta is moving upmarket to motivate more quality sales for UK retailers with a drive on sophisticated polyamide fibres. At an international showcase event in Belgium just before Christmas, the company presented premium products that impressed visitors from across Europe and the UK is set to benefit from better business as a result. Geert Vandem Bossche, marketing director of Balta Group, told The Stocklists: “There is a move up market. Our collection of high-end products is growing and that is our strategy as we see sustained demand in this sector and good opportunities for retailers to make better sales. Consumers are less resistant to premium pricing if the quality is right.” Geert noted that the top end soft-feel polyamide (nylon) ranges that formed only a small part of Balta’s sales three or four years ago, are now growing significantly as a sector. “There is a new generation of solution dyed polyamides and we believe that Balta is the first company to have such a soft product in this sector with all the brightness and performance that top-quality nylon delivers.” And Balta has been busy! There will be 12 new launches for the UK in the first half of 2019.

SPECIAL NEWS FEATURE
Softness to last
The purity of pastels in Uptown’s Bravoure range
Leading on luxury is the new Uptown collection, described by Balta as “urban glamour flooring” – three sophisticated products with a strong individual personality – Obscure, Glamour and Bravoure. These ranges demonstrate Balta’s achievement in engineering the softest touch into the robust performance of polyamide. For a saxony selection, Balta will be bringing in their Eternity “softness to last” collection in two smooth tenth-gauge ranges, Primrose and lighter weight Lily. These “urban” polyamides collections feature the latest on trend colours with refined pastel shades and fashionable accent tones. Balta will also be launching a luxurious new cut-pile saxony in 2019 called Vivid Opulence. For a more natural approach in polyamide, Balta also previewed their Wild Luxury loop pile during 2018 and this will be seen more prominently in the UK for 2019. Wild Luxury is described as “styled by nature” and its carefully chosen palette of natural colours, strong branding themes and the choice across four carpet styles has received a warm welcome from the trade.
Putting on the Ritz
Follie from the Ritzy funky living collection
If you are wondering if the up-market approach is leaving behind more budget-conscious consumers, Balta aim to secure that business for you too with the bright-new Ritzy collection which focuses on fresh design and a young style. “We want people to enjoy selecting a quality carpet that they can afford,” says Vanessa Van Overmeeren, product development director. “We call this ‘the Ritzy Collection – funky living’ and we have had some fun with the designs and presentation to ensure that this value-for-money still has maximum style and appeal to a younger audience.” Six new ranges – Curlie, Hugmie, Groovy, Follie and Hawai – cover a range of carpet styles in contemporary colours and designs, all in 100% soft polyamide. Added to which, is the Infinity Collection – a digitally printed option which features an infinite amount of designs divided into five themes including bold botanicals, urban surfaces, colourful moods and smart geometrics.
Balta’s popular collection of supersoft carpets under the Leonis brand name will also be extended in 2019 with tonal heathers Pure Elegance and its lighter weight partner Pure Delight plus the new Warwick Castle range specially designed for the UK market. Balta continues to develop class-leading polyester products and says its new Soft Origins collection delivers “the softest touch you have ever experienced” with finely engineered multi-fibre yarn technology in luxurious bulky weights that do not disappoint. The two ranges, Cashmere Velvet and Silky Lush live up to their names. And in solution-dyed polypropylene, look out for the launch of fashionable Chelsea Wiltax in 2019 with four patterns in four contemporary designs including a distinctive houndstooth that looks set to sell well. Finally, Balta will launch a range of mainstream PP twists called “Charm” in tenth-gauge to complete their portfolio. Balta launched its new portfolio for 2018 at an impressive International Open Week at its its Tielt showroom and factory in Belgium – one of 10 sites the Balta Group operates around the world. Over 100 buying and retail groups from 40+ countries attended the event which was designed to replace the company’s major attendance at Domotex in January and provide an opportunity to spend more quality time with its customers to discuss plans and concepts.

10 years on top of recycling Recofloor, a champion for sustainability in the flooring sector, will be celebrating 10 years of recycling waste vinyl flooring in 2019. Since its 2009 inception by flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor, the UK’s award-winning Take Back scheme has recycled an impressive total of 4,300 tonnes of waste vinyl material – with rising collections breaking records year-on-year. Set up by the two companies to tackle growing volumes of waste vinyl flooring being sent to landfill, Recofloor now has well over 700 collectors throughout the UK and Ireland, plus more than 60 drop-off sites accepting waste vinyl flooring. Smooth and safety vinyl offcuts and roll ends, uplifted smooth vinyl, luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) and loose lay are recycled back into new products, including flooring manufactured by Altro and Polyflor. The scheme is widely acknowledged as a leading example of manufacturers taking responsibility for driving sustainability across the flooring industry. Bob Smith, Polyflor’s Technical Director comments: “Plastics are hot news at the moment and we are proud to be instrumental in recycling our waste vinyl flooring. We, as well as Altro, invest significant amounts of time, energy and money into the scheme. In 2017, we recycled 563 tonnes; that’s enough material to make 200,000 sq metres of new flooring. Recofloor is ahead of the game in the UK and Europe!” Barry Hall, Altro’s Manufacturing and Technical Director says: “Companies working with Recofloor are leading the way in terms of resource recovery and circular economy. This takeback scheme is helping Altro in terms of its sustainability programme and ambitious growth plans.” T 0161 355 7618 www.recofloor.org
Eco evangelist retires Founder and Director of Carpet Recycling UK Laurance Bird has retired from his day to day involvement with organisation after spearheading CRUK’s activities since the industry body was founded in 2008 to increase the recycling of carpet waste across the UK. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, CRUK has inspired and facilitated the diversion from landfill of one million tonnes of waste carpet to date - equivalent to approximately 400 million m2 of carpet or 57,000 football pitches. Laurance will continue as a non-executive director of CRUK and will be assisting resource recovery specialist Axion with ISOPREP, a new Horizon2020-funded R&D project to extract pure reusable polypropylene polymer from carpets and other composite materials. Every year, 400,000 tonnes of carpet is disposed of in the UK. Over the past 10 years, carpet recycling has grown from just 2% of the used volume arising in 2007 to 168,000 tonnes or 42% according to the latest figures for 2017. CRUK’s target is 60% landfill diversion by 2020. CRUK’s core funders are Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/Headlam, Brintons Carpets, DESSO, ege, Milliken, and Balsan. “After ten years of unstinting support from across the carpet industry, I would like to say thank you to all our members, especially the core funders who have played a key role in CRUK’s success,” says Laurance. Chairman Andy Hall comments: “It is without doubt that the success of CRUK over the last 10 years has in a significant and important way been down to Laurance with his vision, determination, networking and dedication to the challenge of the UK carpet landfill issue. We cannot thank him enough and are delighted that he will still be playing a role over the next phase of the organisation’s development.” T 0161 440 8325 www.carpetrecyclinguk.com 32 January 2019

NEWS Polished performance Products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used to create a highquality, contemporary flooring finish on the ground floor of a newlyconstructed, lakeside residential property near Ipswich. Contractors from The Polished Concrete Co., in Croydon, were called to install F. Ball’s Stopgap 800 Wearcoat self-levelling wearing surface throughout the building’s ground floor areas, over a total area of 200m2, including in the entrance hallway, two bedrooms and living room with large glass windows. Stopgap 800 was chosen to create a visually interesting, natural appearance and a harmonious transition between inside and outside environments. F. Ball’s Stopgap P131 primer and Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane were also used in the installation. Before any work was undertaken, a moisture test was carried out to ascertain levels of subfloor moisture in the building’s concrete subfloor, and it was determined that subfloor relative humidity (RH) levels were 75–80%. Where relative humidity levels are greater than 75% (65% if wood floorcoverings are to be installed) a waterproof surface membrane will be required to provide a barrier against excess moisture and prevent possible floor failure. Therefore, contractors installed F. Ball’s Stopgap F77 two-part, epoxy resin waterproof surface membrane over all ground floor areas. With few exceptions, it’s essential to prime a subfloor before the application of a levelling compound, so a single coat of F. Ball’s P131 primer was applied. When used over non-absorbent surfaces, such as Stopgap waterproof surface membranes, primers serve to promote adhesion of subsequently applied levelling compounds. Stopgap P131 typically dries in less than 60 minutes when applied over non-absorbent subfloors and is pigmented green to visually gauge coverage. Contractors could then proceed to install Stopgap 800 Wearcoat throughout the entire floor. Stopgap 800 is a self-levelling, industrial-grade floor compound used for upgrading and renovating new and existing internal floors in light to heavy duty applications where floorcoverings are not required to be installed. While still wet, an F. Ball spiked roller was used to dispel any trapped air in the levelling compound and optimise its appearance. When dry, contractors polished the surface before applying a sealer to protect the surface from water and other liquids. Commenting on the project, John Butt, managing director at The Polished Concrete Co., said: “It’s been great to be a part of this project. Not only is the building architecturally interesting, it’s situated in a very attractive location, and the finish of the Stopgap 800 adds to the aesthetic that has been created. Our customers love Stopgap 800 for it’s superior appearance to concrete.” T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Company profile: Axminster Carpets We begin 2019 with the first in our series of company profiles. Our aim is to review key flooring brands selling in UK retail today, and where better than to start with one of the most synonymous names in our industry, Axminster Carpets.
Building on heritage History
The history of carpet making in the town of Axminster, Devon dates back to 1755. Today, over two and a half centuries on, it’s reassuring to hear that the town is still the home of Axminster Carpets where this weaving method was first developed.
Manufacturing at Axminster Carpets, Devon
Over recent decades, the UK has seen something of a transformation in the flooring industry, with only a handful of manufacturers still weaving carpet in the UK. Axminster Carpets too have seen much change and was one of many big names in the carpet industry to go through financial difficulty in recent years. What has stayed steadfast is their commitment to UK manufacturing and design, and the use of British Wool. In 2016 the controlling stake in Axminster Carpets was acquired by Bradford-based H Dawson Wool, a key supplier to the wool carpet manufacturing sector. Last year the company appointed Jonathan Young as Managing Director and promoted Gary Bridge to Design & Operations Director, also securing £3.375m funding from Independent Growth Finance to invest in the business. Most importantly, Axminster Carpets has held onto its hundred plus skilled workforce during this transition and launched an apprenticeship programme to ensure valued key skills are handed down to future generations – behind this change is a dedicated Executive Team.

Future Outlook and Aspirations
We found a sound residential and contract development strategy in place. Recent residential introductions include the contemporary Hazy Days collection which incorporates a broad selection of designs in an easy to use colour palette, from geometrics to antique effects this patterned carpet collection has been designed for today’s interiors. Trusted favourite plains, plaids and royal collections have all been recoloured and can be showcased on the new POS being rolled out to the trade as we speak. This is enhanced by bespoke commissions for the contract sector, recent projects include a number of Principal Hayley hotels, the Brighton Pavilion and securing one of UK’s largest rail contracts from SW Rail which involves renovating all their rolling-stock over the next 18 months. So, what’s next?
Jonathan Young, Managing Director at Axminster Carpets explains, “The changes made over the last few years has ensured Axminster Carpets is now on a much stronger footing. We have continued to invest in our core residential business with new products and POS. We also believe that greater diversification into the contract sectors will benefit the business as a whole, and the breadth of projects we are winning just demonstrates the talent of our design and operations team. Our people are key, and we are investing here too, recent recruits include Lina Marino as Export Sales Manager and Amanda Grabham as Head of Marketing who joins the business in January from a strong consumer brands background”.

DOMOTEX 2019 January 11-14, Hannover •
Hannover hosts global flooring fair Our guide to some of the highlights at Domotex 2019 The world’s biggest flooring event opens in Germany from January 11-14 as Domotex plays host to 1,400 exhibitors from over 60 countries. The show which fills 11 halls and 90,000 square metres at the huge Hannover Exhibition Grounds is expected to welcome up to 40,000 trade visitors over its four days. The theme of this year’s event Create ‘N’ Connect reflects the modern trend of connectivity and for flooring the organisers say this will be interpreted to “embody the interplay between traditional manufacturing techniques and modern designs, the multifunctional design of living spaces and smart flooring solutions.” The Create ‘N’ Connect presentation in a “Flooring Spaces” display in Hall 9 will be a highlight of the show. Many UK companies will be hosted by the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce working with the Government’s Department for International Trade who build an impressive exhibition stand which will accommodate companies such as: Cormar Carpets, Brockway, F.Ball & Co Ltd, Ball & Young, GS Wools Ltd, Chromatone. Ltd, Grentex plus others. Other key UK exhibitors include Flair Rugs, Flock-Living, Interfloor and Rama Carpets. “Domotex offers everything you need for your business. You will find all the market leaders in just one place and get a complete overview of the offered range,” say the show organisers, Deutsche Messe. “Use the direct contact to suppliers and maintain a professional exchange with colleagues, association members or the trade press. With the advantage of this knowledge, you will determine your business of tomorrow.” If the whole event just looks too big to take in, there is a popular programme of Guided Tours led by well-known flooring designers and architects who highlight those products which are setting the agenda for future market trends. www.domotex.de

NEWS Motoring ahead Selected for its ability to withstand extreme temperatures, F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS vinyl adhesive has helped to take the floors up a gear in the West Bromwich showroom of leading automotive retailer, Evans Halshaw. Used to install a luxury vinyl tile (LVT) floor finish, Styccobond F49 is specially designed to withstand extreme fluctuations in temperature, the likes of which would be regularly encountered in glass-fronted buildings such as car showrooms. Without such an adhesive, exposure to extreme temperatures causes vinyl floorcoverings to expand and contract, which can lead to tenting and gapping at the interface of adjacent tiles. To combat these conditions, Styccobond F49’s temperature-tolerant properties made it the perfect choice of adhesive. Applied by contractors to the 350m area for the installation of the luxury vinyl tiles (LVTs), Styccobond F49 combines temperature tolerance with pressure sensitive qualities and as such, has good initial tack and high bond strength. This holds vinyl sheet, tiles or planks firmly in place once positioned by the contractor and, when cured, the bond will securely hold vinyl floorcoverings from temperatures as low as -20°C up to 60°C. 2
Commenting on the project, RF Forbes Flooring Contractors director, Richard Forbes, said: “I’ve been in the flooring industry for decades and I’ve walked away from every F. Ball job very happy. Our technical representative Matt went above and beyond to help us out in any way he could, and the service provided to me and my coleader, Rod Farquharson, was absolutely second to none.” T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

BUSINESS NEWS Backing business growth As part of its programme of investment in order to improve manufacturing efficiency, Abingdon Flooring is currently production testing a state-of-the-art backing line that will boost capacity and further improve the consistency of the manufacturer’s industry-leading backings. Nearly 200m in length and representing an expenditure of close to £7m, the new backing line replaces two older lines and is understood to be the only one of its kind in the UK. With a capacity of a roll of carpet per minute, its high-speed operation will allow Abingdon Flooring to meet demand and deliver value in a market place that is becoming increasingly competitive. Steve Byrne, managing director, Abingdon Flooring, commented: “This is a considerable investment for Abingdon Flooring, but one that will certainly help cement our position as one of Britain’s best carpet manufacturers. Replacing older equipment, the new line is a masterclass in modern day carpet production and comes on the back of the recent expansion of our tufting capacity through several new 1/10th gauge machines. Combined, these investments are capable of manufacturing our carpet styles faster, with better consistency and without loss of quality. “Through our programme of investment, we are underlining our commitment to manufacturing in the UK, building a solid business that is fit enough to survive in an increasingly competitive market place. In fact, the market is at its most challenging for many years, so it is even more important that we look towards production efficiency as a key area in which to build advantage.” After a period of production testing, the new backing line is expected to enter full operation early in the new year. Paul’s on the Ball for marketing F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has appointed Paul Bury as the company’s new Marketing Manager. He replaces Richard Harris, who retired in 2018 after 20 years in the position. Paul has longstanding connections with F. Ball having worked as an agency supplier to the marketing team for ten years, providing design, advertising and creative services. In total, Paul has operated the advertising and marketing industry for 30 years, half of which has been at director level, working in sectors as diverse as fashion (where he played a key role in launching the UK’s first ever non-iron shirt) and the automotive industry (promoting specialist components to customers such as Jaguar Landrover). This background has equipped him with a broad range of experience and expertise to complement his in-depth understanding of the flooring market.
in
Commenting on his appointment, F. Ball Sales Director David Hibbert said: “We’re delighted that Paul has agreed to join us. His appointment gives us the best of both worlds in many respects; he will bring a degree of continuity through his long association with the company, and also, with the benefit of his external perspective, will have fresh ideas on how we can evolve and improve our marketing activity further.”

Carpetright reported a £12m net loss for the six months to October 27 and sales were down 16% to £191.1 million but the company said the decline had slowed in the most recent quarter to less than 9%. The group closed 65 underperforming UK stores in the period as part of its restructuring plan and said net debt had been reduced from £53 million at its April 28 year-end to £12.4m.
Since embarking on his career in advertising and marketing in the 1980s, Paul has worked through and embraced the seismic shift of marketing and communications from well-established, print-based platforms to the multitude of digital options available today.

Carpetright optimistic on prospects
“We remain on schedule and are confident that this activity is already starting to yield benefits. This is the first stage in returning the group to sustainable long term profitability,” said Chief Executive Wilf Walsh.
Tapi teams up with Homebase
Meanwhile key Carpetright rival Tapi Carpets announced that it will start opening in-store concessions in partnership with Homebase. Launched in May 2015 by former Carpetright executive Martin Harris, son of founder Lord Harris, Tapi expected to end 2018 with 111 units though the company has also said that its programme of rapid store expansion was due to slow.
Headlam’s London expansion challenged
Headlam’s acquisitions of a trio of London wholesalers have become the subject of an “initial enquiry” by the Government’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). The group bought Ashmount Flooring Supplies in July, Rackhams in September and Garrod Bros in October. The acquisitions were a strategic move by Headlam who felt they were underrepresented in the London area. The CMA’s first move was to issue an Initial Enforcement Order which requires Headlam not to integrate or make changes to any of the three businesses pending their enquiry which will focus on whether there is a substantial lessening of competition in the market as a result of the acquisitions.
Victoria focusses on debt reduction
After a period of rapid expansion by spending on acquisitions, Victoria plc has said it will now focus on paying down debt which has racked up to approximately £340m. The group has acquired 13 businesses over the last six years. The impact of these acquisitions boosted sales by 44% but the company said in its interim report for the six months ending September 29 that likefor-like sales growth was about 3% overall and 4% in the UK and European soft flooring business.

Its unique ethos sees members own a share in the company, fostering a close relationship. Greendale’s July 2019 member event will be a mix of business, via a day time manufacturer’s show, and social through an informal evening event. In 2017 the venue was the Mercedes Benz centre at Brooklands, where members enjoyed high speed laps of the test track followed by dinner and a tour of the motor vehicles and resident Concorde plane. This year’s venue will be announced shortly and will be similarly unique. 44 January 2019

Special Feature: The Museum of Carpet
The heritage at the heart of carpets The power and the glory of Kidderminster’s illustrious past The importance of the heritage of craftsmanship, creativity and ingenuity that drives the UK carpet manufacturing industry is brought to life at Kidderminster’s superb carpet museum which is celebrating six years since its opening and seeking support from the industry to maintain the high standards of its presentation.
its heyday in the 1950s and 60s when some 15,000 people were employed by more than 20 companies.
Set in the historic Stour Vale Mill, the museum tells the 300-year-old history of carpet-making in a friendly, modern environment staffed by volunteers, many of whom are ex-weavers and experts in the textile trade.
Top ratings on Trip Advisor bear out the appeal of the place. “Our visit there was fascinating, made so by the volunteers who were full of information and stories about their time in the industry,” said one reviewer this year. “A fantastic museum, we had to put extra money on the car parking as we were enjoying it so very much!” commented another.
There are some 20,000 items housed at the museum including rare samples, photographs and documents but the beating heart of the place is the hall with two remarkable power looms which are lovingly coaxed into action on a regular basis – a Jacquard Wilton loom, manufactured in Halifax in the 1800s and a spool Axminster loom from the 1950s. There are also demonstrations on hand looms of the type that were commonplace in the attics of weavers houses in Kidderminster 100 years ago, before the amazing growth of factory-based manufacturing which hit
Today, there are still leading manufacturers like Adam, Brockway, Grosvenor Wilton and MasterWeavers working in the town along with the UK offices of Brintons.
Anyone involved in the flooring industry should take the time to tour Stour Mill and the trustees are also encouraging companies to become sponsors of the museum and to use its excellent modern facilities for meetings and presentations. T (01562) 69028 www.museumofcarpet.org

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.
Benefits
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will...
• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Combination
Crumb
PU foam
www.interfloor.com
Types
PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling. Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk
Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.
www.underlay.com
Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter
• shedding • pulled loops
Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 52
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment. THE STOCKLISTS January 2019
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
Flattening
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
Shading Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
Pile Reversal
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
Shedding All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Indentations
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder. THE STOCKLISTS January 2019

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Factsheet Adhesive Types Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticized PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors.
ADHESIVES
SELECTION CHECKLIST
The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time: The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked. Odour: Low odour, solvent free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.
Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels.
Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.
Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive.
Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.
Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.
Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured. Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but
this criteria must be checked where appropriate. Subfloor: What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard. Whilst there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces. The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation. Special Performance: Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments. Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.

of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions
ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS January 2019

• Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support
Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.
