FLOORINGNEWS Happier herringbone Lion Floor is made in Finland as an engineered fibreboard that can replace BS compliant plywood beneath resilient floors. It’s thinner, stronger, less prone to faults and deviations, and compatible with all major feather finishes and screeds, so if you’re looking for a subfloor that won’t let you down, then choose Lion Floor. Particularly with herringbone LVT floors, where the additional expense of installation puts work under more scrutiny, Lion Floor makes sense. It can be installed in just the same way as plywood, cut or sawn, and fixed with rink shank nails. There’s no special installation required so it’s easy to adapt to, and with a lower height than plywood it can also avoid door trimming or further adjustments. Unlike traditional hardboards, as its pre-treated there’s no need for wetting before applying screed or feather finish. Peter Jones, Finnish Fibreboard (UK) says: “The extra reliability of Lion Floor should make it the default subfloor option beneath herringbone LVT, particularly as its more cost-effective than a premium quality branded plywood.” Reliability is one of Lion Floor’s strengths. The dense board is exceptionally resistant to impacts and the construction eliminates the problems that come with the core gaps and overlaps found in plywood. It’s a fast and effective way to deliver a first-class resilient floor installation. Lion Floor has also been rigorously tested to make sure it lives up to its promises as a worry-free solution to vinyl flooring installation. Europe’s largest independent training centre, FloorSkills, recommends Lion Floor under stick down LVT, selected click LVT and sheet vinyl. Made from wood by-product, Lion Floor also has a significantly lower global warming potential than European made plywood. With an independently verified EPD, you can be confident in the environmental performance of Lion Floor. www.finfib.fi

Domotex goes up the wall

Over 90% of Quick-Step Master Installers surveyed believe that being part of the programme brings benefits to their business. Joining an elite group of flooring professionals who have the vision and passion for delivering the highest levels of workmanship and customer service, Quick-Step Master Installers are considered among the best in the industry.

Everything for floors, walls and ceilings – Domotex will present a new meeting place for the skilled trades and retailers when it opens in Hannover on January 11.

But becoming a Quick-Step Master Installer is not just a sign of professionalism, it is also a way to show customers and retailers that you are committed to delivering a quality installation and someone they can trust to carry out work to the highest standards. This is confidenceinspiring and can make a real difference to business. In fact, in a recent survey, when asked, 90% of Master Installers believe holding the badge has a positive effect on business. For example, even after 30-years in the industry, Steve Whitburn has found the Master Installer badge to be an advantage when relocating to a new area: “The recognition of the Quick-Step brand among consumers, combined with the lifetime Quick-Step Installation guarantee, gives you an edge on closing work. It’s certainly helped to establish me in the area. I also get a regular flow of enquiries from the Quick-Step website, where I’m listed as Master Installer operating in the Torquay area. Support from the Academy has also been flawless, with the social media platforms connected to the Academy really helpful when you’re on-site and in a bit of a pickle!”

In 2024 and in partnership with Decor-Union and the MEGA Group, Domotex will be expanding its portfolio to include two new product segments "wall" and "ceiling", thus enhancing the value of the show for visitors from the trade and retail sectors. Participants from skilled trades and specialist retailers can look forward to a new hub at the Retailer’s Park in hall 19, which invites visitors to think beyond floor coverings and imagine a coherent interior design. Paints and varnishes, wallpapers, coats that protect against UV radiation and many other innovative products are presented to create harmonious interiors. Here visitors can establish new contacts, meet colleagues and get an overview of current topics in the industry presented in a series of lectures and live demos with practical solutions for their business. Overall, the Domotex event will once again focus on sustainability, the circular economy and environmental protection in the carpet and flooring industry. "In a world where resources are becoming scarcer and the consequences of the climate crisis are starting to hit us more frequently, sustainability must become an integral part of everything we do. That is why we have made the decision to maintain and expand our value-based keynote theme Floored by Nature and the special display The Green Collection," says Sonia Wedell-Castellano, Global Director of Domotex. www.domotex.de

As an ambassador of Quick-Step, Master Installers are associated with the world’s biggest flooring brand, giving them a unique status and a difference from the competition. There’s also the listing on Find an Installer, which receives over 1,000 visitors a month, and a free lifetime Quick-Step Installation warranty. Master Installers also benefit from a full and rounded support package, including technical assistance, swatch books and updates, sales organisers and brochures. There is also a range of branded clothing available for purchase and the Master Installer logo can be used on company vehicles and stationery to gain highly visible credibility. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk 24

FLOORINGNEWS Flooring heads to new hub in Flanders The European flooring industry is set to gather in Flanders next year with a mission to bring more manaufacturers together and to create a new hub event for the industry. Flooring manufacturers and buyers will gather in and around the Belgium town of Kortrijk from May 13 to 16, to discover new products, meet customers and conclude collaborations. Market leaders and local manufacturers are opening their own showrooms at their premises but new in 2024 is a central showroom ‘The Hub’ in Kortrijk Xpo (pictured right), where European players can display their innovations. "In 2022, Flanders Flooring Days originated as a way to organize a trade event where players in the flooring industry could meet despite the pandemic," explains Sales Manager Cindy Collez. "It became an unexpected success. Customers were welcomed to the showrooms and production facilities of market leaders in the field. Within a radius of 25 km, more than ten notable names in the sector participated.. In 2023, our visitor numbers grew 60% to 1,600." In 2023, no less than 72 nationalities found their way to the showrooms in East and West Flanders. By popular demand, Flanders Flooring Days decided to open its doors for its third edition and welcome European manufacturers as well. To keep it practical, they will claim their own place in the central showroom at ‘The Hub’ in Kortrijk Xpo. Belgian manufacturers can also choose to set up a stand here to meet buyers, architects and professionals with a passion for flooring. www.flandersflooringdays.com

Take care with rugs The Ecorugs collection by Louis De Poortere is making a circular product possible, but only because the Take Care Program sets out a path to recyclability. When it developed the mono-material 100% polyester construction of its new Ecorugs collection with the intent of achieving product circularity, Louis De Poortere had two significant challenges to meet. The first to ensure it maintained the aesthetic qualities of its designs and secondly, to make sure that Ecorugs could be recycled back into new rugs. Louis Dryon, COO, Louis De Poortere, explains more: “We believe that circularity is a way we can reduce the impact of our products on the environment, but in order to do that properly, we need to make sure we’re in control of the product cycle. Just producing a recyclable rug is not enough, we want to take responsibility for the whole process. The Take Care Program is our way of doing that and starting the journey to true product circularity.” The Take Care Program is based on two principles – a long life through the rug’s machine-washable construction and a returns process which is simple for the customer and ensures that Louis de Poortere is in control of reuse and recycling. Once the original purchaser has finished with their Ecorug, they simply scan the QR code which comes on every rug’s label to arrange free collection and return. Perfect match for F Ball and football Leek Town F.C. and Cheddleton-based F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have put the finishing touches to a new three-year sponsorship deal that will see the club’s ground become known as the F. Ball Community Stadium. The partnership represents an expansion of the flooring installation products manufacturer’s longstanding support for the club, evidenced by the branding of the Blues’ Macclesfield Road and Kiln Lane terraces, to now include naming rights of the stadium. Commenting on the partnership, Jon Eeles, Chairman of Leek Town FC, said: “The board is extremely pleased to announce the new extended sponsorship deal with F. Ball and Co. Ltd. Their association with the club, goes back many years, and the new deal is a further development of that. Indeed, F. Ball’s continued support throughout the covid pandemic enabled the club to progress our new 3G pitch project, which has transformed the club’s operations. We appreciate that the naming rights for stadiums can be a contentious issue for some fans, but the new name reflects the work we are doing in building a community asset. “We will not be losing our association with the name Harrison Park and after consultation with the family, who have been supportive, we will be re-naming our sponsorship lounge The Geoff Harrison Suite.” F. Ball Sales Director, Darren Kenyon, added: “Grassroots clubs are a vital part of our national footballing heritage and cornerstones of communities, with histories that are intertwined with the places they are situated. We are therefore delighted to build on our support of our local team.” T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

FLOORINGNEWS Bucket loads of eco savings

Family future for QEP

Flooring professionals are not just saving the Earth, but also saving money by using the F. Ball Recycling Scheme, with one contractor cutting waste disposal costs by over £8,000.

QEP UK has completed a successful management buyout of the major designer, manufacturer and distributor of a broad range of tiling, flooring and underlay installation solutions

The initiative, first introduced in 2019, provides commercial waste bins around the country where empty recyclable F. Ball buckets and bottles can be disposed of for recycling, for free.

All of the UK business assets of US owner Q.E.P. Co., Inchave been acquired by the Boyce Family Group.

Since joining the scheme last year, Fineweave Carpets in Reading has returned a total of 8,200 plastic bottles for reprocessing that would have otherwise been destined for landfill, equating to over 1,000kg of plastic. It is estimated that this would cost over £8,200 to dispose of through commercially available channels. Lee Withers, director of Fineweave Carpets, said: “We pride ourselves on doing what we can for the environment, and the F. Ball Recycling Scheme gives us another opportunity to do this whilst also cutting our costs.” Flooring contractors will also find recycling points at select distributors. Nutlands Carpets, which has branches in Poole and Chandlers Ford, has sent over 3,700 plastic bottles for recycling through the scheme, the equivalent of 481kg of plastic, saving customers more than £3,700 to date.

Paul and Sarah Boyce have been associated for many years with some of these industry leading brands. Paul has been a member of QEP’s group management team for the past 14 years, having most recently served on the US Board of Directors as CEO of International Operations. Paul Boyce, CEO of QEP UK Holdings Limited, said: “This acquisition is a significant milestone for our company and for me personally, having started my career in the industry over 30 years ago and having worked closely with all of these brands throughout that period. As we embark on this new chapter, I am really excited about the opportunities to build on this successful foundation, leveraging our combined strengths with QEP-US to drive greater success and deliver even more value to our customers and stakeholders.”

On the importance of being involved in the initiative, James Smith, managing director of Nutlands Carpets, said: “As a family run distributor, we take great pride in doing our part to reduce the environmental impact of our operations, including being a part of innovative recycling schemes like this. “Customer service is paramount to us, and by providing the recycling bins we are saving them time and money spent visiting local recycling centres. As a result, we know that some choose to buy F. Ball products from us rather than other wholesalers. We hope that more manufacturers follow F. Ball’s lead in this area.”

The acquisition will allow QEP-UK to focus on its key business units, product categories and portfolio of highly recognised home improvement brands such as QEP, Roberts, Vitrex, Tile Rite, Plasplugs, Homelux, XPS Foam and Kraus. QEP-UK will continue to concentrate on the needs of UK DIYers, contractors and professionals, growing through both UK-focused and worldwide innovation. QEP-UK is headquartered in Burton on Trent with distribution and manufacturing locations in the Midlands, North West and North Wales. T 01283 245430 www.qep.com

F. Ball plastic buckets and the company’s five and 20 litre plastic bottles used for liquids, primers and tackifiers can be recycled via the scheme, with much of the packaging itself manufactured from recycled materials. The scheme has been steadily expanded in response to a positive reception from flooring contractors, and there are now more than 40 recycling points at wholesaler partners across the UK. Commenting on the figures, F. Ball sales director Darren Kenyon said: “With continuing high inflation, it’s invaluable to know how to cut costs without compromising on installation quality, and it’s never been more urgent to curb our environmental impact. The F. Ball Recycling Scheme provides an effortless way to do both. We’re delighted by some of the numbers around savings by those benefitting from the scheme, and I encourage more to do the same.”

FLOORINGBUSINESSNEWS Sales up, confidence down

Likewise results drive new ambitions

The flooring industry waits with some trepidation to see how Q4 plays out as the latest retail figures put sales significantly up for September while consumer confidence in the sector is plummeting.

Fast growing UK floor coverings distributor the Likewise Group says it's focussed on creating a much larger business than was originally planned following its latest positive results.

The latest report from the Office for National Statistics has encouraging news for the flooring sector with sales up 22% for September, rising on a month-on-month to £271.8m from £221.6m in August. Compared to the same time last year, sales are up 6.9%. Part of the uplift is accounted for by inflation which is still persistently high in flooring at 8.4% but volumes are also up and the figures are in line with the furniture sector as a whole which was up 26% in September. The overall retail figures for September which saw non-food sales down 1.9% over August. But the positive news runs counter to the latest report from GfK's highly regarded Major Purchase Index which asks how confident consumers are to buy appliances, furniture and cars. After a summer of improvements in the index, this month's report sees the index drop 14 points to minus 34 - the largest drop for over three years in a single month. Joe Staton, client strategy director at GfK commented: "The fierce headwinds of meeting the accelerating costs of heating our homes, filling our petrol tanks, coping with surging mortgage and rental rates, a slowing jobs market and now the uncertainties posed by conflict in the Middle East, are all contributing to this growing unease," "The volatility we are seeing in consumer confidence is a sure sign of a depressed economic mood, and there’s no immediate prospect of any improvement," he said. GfK's general consumer confidence index covering all sectors dropped nine points to minus 30 in October.

Carpet inflation refuses to fall Carpets continue to buck the trend of falling inflation with stubbornly high levels last month while furniture fell to its lowest level in 30 months. Latest data from the Office for National Statistics says that retail price inflation for carpets and rugs was up 8.4% in September. This reverses the slight fall in August - the first for months - down to 8.4%. The figure is in stark contrast to the level for the furniture industry which saw a drop to 3.4% for September from 4% in August. The overall consumer price inflation figure is 6.7% – unchanged over the last month. Flooring types other than carpets are more in line with general inflation at 6.5%.

QEP management buyout QEP UK has completed a management buyout with all of the UK business assets of US owner Q.E.P. Co., having been acquired by the Boyce Family Group. See page 30 for more details.

In its interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2023, the group said total sales were up 17.3% to 66.6 million while the Likewise branded sales were up 23.3%. Looking beyond the first half, Likewise said that “August was a record month for sales revenue which provides confidence entering the traditionally busy Autumn period.” Adjusted profit before tax for the first six months was £0.7 million compared to £1.9 million for this time last year, principally impacted as expected by the accelerated investment in the business. In a statement to shareholders, Tony Brewer, Chief Executive of Likewise Group plc, said: “The strong increases in Group revenue over the past four years demonstrates an exponential gain in market share and the ongoing enlargement of logistics and sales infrastructure will facilitate the continuation of market share progress. "We have so many opportunities before us as we continue to enlarge the Group’s infrastructure which will create additional sales and increased profitability. With the original targets before us, the Group can now focus on creating a much larger business than previously anticipated,” he added.

Belgium export business blow Belgium has slipped to third place in the rankings of top exporters to the UK, having been our biggest trading partner in flooring for many years. August data showed a dismal performance by Belgium in August, down 36% on this time last year. The Netherlands is now the top importer into the UK but its total was still down 4.9% on August last year, according to HMRC data compiled by The Furnishing Report. A resurgence of the carpet business in Turkey is very marked with it's sales into the UK leaping 92% to £13 million. during August. On a year-to-date basis, carpet imports are down 5.7% at £607.4m, with imports from the Netherlands totalling £166.6 million (-0.7%), Belgium at £120.8 million (-24%) and Turkey on £97.8 million (+19%).

Amtico accelerates sales in UK Sales for high-end LVT specialist Amtico grew 15 percent to £131.3m million in the year ended December 31, 2022, with a particularly strong performance in the U.K., where revenue was up 19 percent to £89.9 million. However raw material increases saw margins squeezed and this, together with an additional £3.8 million warranty provision against a discontinued product line, meant profits (EBITDA) fell 65% to £3.74m

Marketing insights Sustainable luxury Flooring trends continue to evolve, with a focus on natural materials, sustainability, luxury vinyl, and creative designs. This year we have seen interior design trends begin to move away from ‘grey and shiny’ to create interiors that are more ‘muted and textured’, using a range of natural elements. Versatile and suitable for all around the home. The recently launched Hampstead range by Cormar is a classic, heavyweight wool twist carpet made using Pure New Wool and available in a palette of popular plain and heather shades including classic neutrals alongside some bolder tones, providing a stylish and practical base for interior design schemes. Wool textures also remain a firm favourite as a way of adding an additional element of depth to homes. Stair runners using wool loop ranges are becoming increasingly popular as a way of adding style, safety and comfort to a staircase. The addition of a canvas taped border provides another dimension to a staircase and offers the opportunity to bring in a co-ordinating or contrasting colour.

“Made from 100% Pure New Wool, Cormar’s recently launched wool loop ranges Fairisle and Malabar Two Fold, are a great option for stairs and hallways," Cormar, Fairisle Ridge Mist

Complementary of any décor thanks to their neutral colour palette, the natural hues of a wool loop carpet warm up any space and work well with the surrounding interior, making it a great long-term choice. Made from 100% Pure New Wool, Cormar’s recently launched wool loop ranges Fairisle and Malabar Two Fold, are a great option for stairs and hallways, making a design statement while also being practical.

Amtico is all about embracing the latest trends while offering timeless and enduring LVT flooring that will last in terms of durability as well as design. This year in 2023, the two buzzwords are authenticity and simplicity with craftsmanship at its core. Interiors have become more refined, soothing and cocooning than ever before and as customers look to bring the beauty and texture of nature into their homes, Amtico has it covered with hyper-realistic wood and stone effects.

Amtico Décor National Trust Collection, Octagon Key Grace

Stone styles have moved on from the country cottage look to Serene Spaces with a more contemporary feel. The result is a more natural, softer tone with the chalky pale hues of Tumbled Stones & Tones alongside simple yet sophisticated concrete looks. Heavier texture can also be introduced with Amtico’s realistic natural wood designs that offer everything from Heritage Oaks to Powdered, Muted and Mulled Oak. For those who favour a maximalist approach, the Retro Revival sees colourful block prints and abstract design while laying patterns such as Parquet and Basket Weave allow for even greater design possibilities.

“Stone styles have moved on from the country cottage look to Serene Spaces with a more contemporary feel." Adam Carpets report that the desire to cocoon ourselves in our homes has been a trend driver throughout 2023. As we head into the autumn and winter season, warmth, comfort, and relaxation are at the forefront of interior design decisions. Whether it’s immersing ourselves in joyful colour or introducing silk in soft tactile materials for a more literal cocooning effect. Winning Gold in the Flooring Innovation Awards, their Geometric Collection is the perfect example of how pattern and tactile furnishings create this desired feeling. Their Cascade design is inspired by waves of water, known to evoke feelings of calm and relaxation. This would be a perfect addition in any room and available in a calm, mindfulness palette of colourways. Kelly Butler, head of design at Adam Carpets explains, “Natural textures are favoured over cold hard surfaces. Raw woods, rattan, straw, and cork are intrinsic to creating a soothing and restorative ambience. Our Parquet design fits completely into this trend of tactile, natural texture.

Harrogate REVIEW

Smart marketing

Competing on value, not price The last three years have been a rollercoaster of mixed fortunes in every sector with flooring being buffeted between the highs of "pent-up demand" - remember that! - and today's uncertain trading conditions. The direction of the market right now is difficult to call according to most commentators. After the boom of interiors investment before and immediately after the pandemic, thiis year saw the market start slowly followed by a betterthan-expected summer for many but the "golden quarter" leading up until Christmas has been unseasonably sluggish for many manufacturers so far. The industry's response to such turbulence was on display at The Flooring Show in Harrogate and it's a smart one - a lot of carefully considered product development that's looking for every opportunity to add quality and value without adding cost, So while the entry-level sector takes a pounding for the forseeable future as the cost-ofliving challenge continues, and the high-end appears to carry on regardless, the competition in the middle market is keen and intelligent. Affordable wool, enhanced man-made carpets and streamlined smooths are where the battle to generate better margins for suppliers and retailers is being fought – check out the following pages in our feature for all the details but here's the synopsis..

Affordable wool Affordability is a relative term and many consumers under stress can't afford much at the moment, But those who can want to feel they are investing in something that will last and, historically for the UK, that sounds like wool. To some extent the gap between synthetic and wool has narrowed with the raw materials for synethetic fibres getting more expensive and current issues in the Middle East are going to exacerbate this oil-based situation. Environmental costs may also add to manmade carpet costs. And all things natural are in voguie right now so the appetite for wool launches is growing with all the major manufacturers boosting their portfolios. Enhanced man-made The improvement in the quality of synthetic carpet in recent years has been clear, reflected in the growing number of tenth gauge offers and in the increasing tendency towards polyester for performance alongside comfort. These developments run alongside sustainability as the man-made sector sits down to the serious business of getting its environmental credentials in order - for real, with excellent trends in recyclability and particular in the mono-polymer approach that hugely improves circular sustainability. Streamlined smooths If you haven't checked through suppliers' portfolios recently, look again and review your offer. Many of the main players - and increasingly attractive mid-sized suppliers – have completely overhauled their collections to make them easy for retailers and consumers to understand and navigate. Construction technology has further improved performance and fittability and suppliers have been quick to respond to new interior design trends. 36

Furlong Flooring

Fizzing with new features Furlong is fizzing with ideas and innovation these days with two major initiatives and seven product range launches on show at Harrogate, securing the company’s position as the one to watch. “There’s a lot going on at Furlong,”” says sales director Ian Collacott. “We are diversifying our portfolio with some important developments and making major steps forward in our offer to retailers.”

Furlong's new creative design impressed stand visitors

“There’s a lot going on at Furlong,” says sales director Ian Collacott. “We are diversifying our portfolio with some important developments and making major steps forward in our offer to retailers.”

EcoSense was the centrepiece at the show – a ground-breaking range of 2-ply 100% recycled yarn carpets. “This approach means no new oil resources are used to make these products,” says Ian. “It’s the right thing to do for the environment and is an increasingly attractive offer to a younger generation of consumers. Best of all, you get the same quality at the same price.” Launched under the EcoSense banner are Enchantment, made from 100% recycled polyester yarn, and Avondale, manufactured from 100% recycled polypropylene yarn. Both offer durability and adaptability to various environments. Enchantment and Avondale carpets are mothproof, bleach cleanable, and ecofriendly. Avondale, available in both Plain and Heathers variations, boasts a 2-ply yarn construction and a seven-year warranty. Sharing some of the limelight was the other important umbrella brand for Furlong, the Beyond Wool® Ian Collacott with EcoSense collection – first seen in the summer at the buying group show in Solihull. Also containing ranges made from 100% recycled yarn, these de-lustred man-made fibres blend the timeless aesthetic of natural wool with the practical advantages of stain and moth resistance. The Stanton and Callanish ranges have been launched into this collection with stand-out features including Combi-bac® backing and 2-ply construction.

Smooth operators Furlong’s smooth flooring has also undergone a transformation. “We have a lot of new innovations to offer and want to make this sector more friendly for retailers to deal with,” says Richard Richman. Laminate is really fighting back and gaining market share now, he says. Sunex is a new pallet range of 4 colours for retailers who want to become laminate stockists and Manor is a smart new herringbone in eight colours. Other innovations include UberWood – a highly durable laminate that is waterproof at particle level so is reliable even when cut. In vinyl, Furlong is offering Endura, a next-generation rigid but lightweight SPC vinyl which is also 100% waterproof, and SafetyFlor available is 5 plain decors, designed for superior performance and slip resistance for commercial and residential use. Counting on affordable quality Cormar can be counted on to come to The Flooring Show with something for everyone – the kind of thoughtful product development that maintains its position as a market leader. “In a tight market, retailers are looking for affordable, quality ranges that are guaranteed to sell and our job is to give them what they want,” says David Cormack of Cormar. “We’re really focussed on the needs of the independent retailers – it is all about reliability and performance.” Wool ranges have been core to Cormar’s development this year with three new entrants. Hampstead, a new heavyweight, 80/20 wool twist carpet in two qualities, made its debut – a smart tenth gauge carpet that is set to be a mainstream seller.

New wool loop Fairisle is thriving Developments in the man-made portfolio include the recent arrival of Trinity – an affordable, bleach-cleanable polypropylene twist with a wide choice of colour palette across 14 options, using a tri-colour yarn to create attractive heathered tones. Making its debut at the show was Kingston, set to become a go-to range for retailers as a well-priced tenth gauge in a set of core colours including four plains and 11 heathers. Cormar were also encouraging its customers to sign on to its class-leading portal – more than 60% of its orders now go through the system – giving retailers 24/7 access to ordering, stock availability and delivery tracking.

Abingdon Flooring

Solving the colour puzzle Retailers spending time at The Flooring Show couldn’t fail to miss Abingdon Flooring, as the British manufacturer marked its 20th anniversary and showcased how it has a carpet to fit any customer’s taste. Across the classic wool-rich carpets of Wilton Royal, the luxurious soft touch feel of the Love Story family and the comfort and practicality of Stainfree; Abingdon Flooring made it apparent that it’s one of the country’s leading carpet marques. With such a wide array of styles, naturally comes a mesmerising number of colour choices, so it’s no wonder that Abingdon Flooring is considered one of the best at coloured carpets. From perfectly balanced neutral and natural tones to an almost limitless palette of modern greys and rich and indulgent shades; Abingdon Flooring also used The Flooring Show to help retailers get a better understanding of how colour carpets can be used in the home. “Our wide colour choice does leave retailers with something of a puzzle when it comes to recommending the right shade, so we used The Flooring Show to help them solve it,” says Abingdon's Charlotte Coop. “Our stand gave some really helpful hints on how to pick the perfect colour and make customers happy – what a great way to mark 20 years of making carpets right here in Britain.”

“For 20 years we’ve been producing carpets in Britain and in that time, we’ve become one of the nation’s favourite carpet brands. It was great to celebrate this milestone anniversary with our customers, friends and colleagues from across the industry and we also used The Flooring Show to unveil some exciting new collections to our product families. The response to these new ranges was fantastic and we’re looking forward to them rolling out to stores right across the UK.” Charlotte Coop, head of marketing, Abingdon Flooring:

Pure Elegance in Black Raven

Wilton Royal's Charter Plain Loop

The manufacturer’s exclusive previews of new collections included Pure Elegance and Captivation, two high-end Stainfree carpets that bring the feel of a luxury saxony carpet with the durability of a twist. Using a 1/10th gauge for a finer twist, and combined with Abingdon Flooring’s latest generation polypropylene yarn, Pure Elegance and Capitvation represent choices for customers that want the feel of saxony without sacrificing a classic look that keeps tracking and vacuuming marks at bay. The construction brings impressive durability, whether in the heavyweight Pure Elegance or lighter and more affordable Captivation. Presented in a full spectrum of colours, including sophisticated neutrals and a range of rich classics, the carpets feature Abingdon Flooring’s fleece back for better comfort and easier installation. Of course, they will be offered with the famous Stainfree for Life guarantee against household stains.

M D Stephen Donlan and Jenna Kane launch the new Deco design concept

Deco – uniquely unusual Harrogate’s extra wow factor was the buzz around the brand new Deco Collection – a clever concept for retailers who want to develop a real interior design field to the store. The presentation is based around a unique mood board wall display with a magnetic pin presentation of carpet, fabrics and wallpapers which can be taliored to each store. Then, the display can draw on 43 carpet options including 14 new flatweaves, textured loops and unusual pinstripes and broadstripes alongside coordinating plains.

Durham Alternates won a prestigious Gold prize in the Flooring Innovation Awards announced at the show. It is a top quality 3-ply wool loop in New Zealand yarn which has been created in two designs - a boucle and herringbone loop which coordinate with the cutpile plains of Hugh Mackay’s flagship Durham Twist range. The company’s five best-selling natural shades and five top greys have been combined to build its attractive colourbank of 10. Natural Origins has already picked up big sales since it was launched in midsummer – a 100% wool loop which is right on trend in eight natural shades and three textured designs including a popular herringbone (pitctured).

Victoria Carpets

Adding to the appeal Victoria keeps growing its reputation for always going one better in building its wool and manmade ranges into an impressive added-value portfolio for retailers. First Impressions is a much-loved wool favourite among retailers and consumers. “We’re not changing a winning formula after 10 years and five million square metres sold, we’re just adding to the appeal,” says Victoria’s James Caldwell. The eight best-selling colours are being kept and then 12 new shades reflecting the trend for warmer tones come into the mix to make 20 options in all.

First Impressions is a much-loved favourite among retailers and consumers. “We’re not changing a winning formula after 10 years and five million square metres sold, we’re just adding to the appeal,” says Victoria’s James Caldwell.

Sisal, with superpowers! Now Victoria has set out on a new journey into the designery world of sisal – but not as you know it!

Victoria – First Impressions

This is EasiSisal – the rustic look and feel of the familiar plant-based fibre but without the maintenance issues as this has the performance of polypropylene. Stain-resisant and bleach cleanable – “it’s indestructible,” you can even power wash it,” says James.

And First Impressions is now joined by a junior partner called Pioneer reflecting the tight economic climate. Pioneer weighs in at 46oz compared to its 63oz parent and is available in only 10 colours to ensure it can be competitively priced, effectively at a roll rate. The two ranges can be presented side-by-side to encourage trade-up opportunities.

The collection is called Journey and is available as 4m broadloom that can be laid both in rooms or edged and used as stair runners or rugs. And as these carpets can be used indoors and out, they are an increasing popular option for patio and conservatory design. The display at Harrogate had several eye-catching designs, many of which were prototypes to gauge reaction before the concept gets launched early next year.

Responding to consumer demand for eco friendly natural flooring, Victoria will launch Pure & Simple, its first undyed wool range this autumn. British wool has been blended to create eight subtle tones which is offered in an 80/20 cut pile and a smart loop.

Adam Carpets

Raising the profile of pattern Adam Carpets is one of the industry’s most impressive manufacturers in terms of modern design and attention to detail and their distinctive ranges are getting increasing recognition in the marketplace. The showcase collection right now is Geometrics which made its debut in stores earlier this year and followed through with a prestigious Gold prize in the Flooring Innovation Awards presented at The Flooring Show. Geometrics is a contemporary collection of four designs varying from discrete textures to bold statement styles – the organic curves of Cascade, the playful lines of Nexus, a 3D retro Parquet and the vintage, abstract micro pattern of Enigma. Cascade, the boldest of the set, has turned out to be the best seller showing that consumers are not scared of pattern if it’s the right pattern.

“We get great feedback from this collection and it’s doing well,” says MD Chris Adam. “This has really raised our profile in retail and we see lots of retailers going online to share impressive installation imagery. Adam has had success in recent years with other adventures in innovative design with the zippy stripes of Panache, the tekkie herringbone of Flare and the distinctive diamonds of Deco Design. So it’s no surprise they had the next generation of ideas on show at Harrogate.

“We are really pushing ahead on pattern. Customers are not so risk adverse as they once were and we’re taking sounding on our latest modern pattern developments.“

Pride in wool perfection Adam’s quality in producing the finest 80/20 wool/nylon carpets is uncompromising as demonstrated in the legendary plain twists such as Fine Worcester Twist and Castlemead Twist and Chris gave an insight into the care that is taken.

“We have five generations of experience in selecting yarn and a lot of detail goes into sourcing our wool,” says Chris. “It is all UK wool taken from five or six breeds and we looking at the colour, lustre and performance. Focusing on breeds isn’t enough. The wool will vary according to where in the country the wool is grown – even the type of landscape as, for example, sheep reared within stone walls will have a cleaner clip than those between hedges.”

Woven Edge

Dazzling design, bespoke service Woven Edge were an eye-catching attraction at Harrogate with a luxury range of custom hand knotted and hand tufted rugs and runners, with broadloom to match, in dazzling design options and textures. “We are in the fashion industry and we want to make it fun,” says business owner Ian Wallace. “There’s nothing beige about us. What we do is unique and will shake up the market.” And they’re having plenty of success as retailers get up to speed on the high-margin growth business that is premium custom rugs. The business was started in 2016 and is based at Stour Vale Mill in Kidderminster and has showrooms and warehousing in the town. Bespoke rugs has become the fastest growing part of the business and the Woven Edge POS display linked to a clever app has the potential to transform any flooring store into a rug design centre (see panel below).

More fashion for flooring “Rug in a box” offers instant gratification with a stylish range of ready to roll rugs with designer edging and a huge range of options presented in an intriguing POS unit. Other ranges include the sustainable Eco range, a contemporary collection of flexible flatweave rugs hand woven using polyethylene fibres, made 100% from recycled water bottles – a perfect option for a hard wearing, reversible rug for indoors and out. Or indulge in a modern take on Persian design with a stunning collection of hand knotted wool and viscose rugs, printed with details, then over-tufted. Contemporary colours update this traditional style with each design being an individual work of art, custom crafted to any size required. And finally the newest addition to the portfolio is Kaleen by The Woven Edge, a sophisticated neutral collection that can be cut to size as a wall to wall carpet, rug or runner. This versatile collection consists of 8 patterns, with 3 colour ways per design. Choose between 4 hand loomed flat weaves in 5m width and 4 hand loomed luxury pile in 4m – all available by the roll or as individual cut sizes. There is a choice of whipped or taped edges to suit the customer's interior design finish. A smart in-store lectern (pictured above) presents the possibilities in style with full sampling.

This is what you want in your store The POS unit has some 80 distinctive designs – beautiful qualities in 100% New Zealand wool with some bamboo fibre for sheen. Each design has a QR code linked to an app that the retailer can easily bring up on an iPad or smartphone. The retailer and consumer can work together to customise the rug with different colours, yarns, carvings and, of course, different sizes. A pom box of the trend-driven colour options sits alongside the stand. Consumers can also do this at home but will be directed to their nearest retail stockist to place the order. Upping the game for underlay gain Many retailers sell underlay on thickness, weight or price – or, in fact, on none of these, as they may only offer one underlay! Now there’s a new way, a better way – and one that might increase the value of every flooring sale. “In this difficult climate, I think we have a solution that could really add value for retailers and their underlay sales,” says Richard Booth, national sales manager for Carpenter Underlays. “And it’s an approach that can be tailored to each retailer to give them the best chance of maximising profit opportunities and adding to a consumer's satisfaction at the same time. A win–win.” The idea is a free underlay presenter which can be hung on the wall or in a van ready to be brought into the discussion at the point of sale. Three samples are presented – chosen at the retailer’s discretion and fully interchangeable – and ranked as “Standard” (the mainstream sell for that store) and then “Performance” and “Comfort”.

Richard Booth shows the new point of sale approach to inform consumers

“In this difficult climate, I think we have a solution that could really add value for retailers and their underlay sales” says Richard Booth, national sales manager for Carpenter Underlays. “And it’s an approach that can be tailored to each retailer to give them the best chance of maximising profit and adding to a consumer's satisfaction.” “We think the discussion is not just about density or just height, and it wants to be about more than just price,” says Richard. "It’s about what a consumers wants out of their underlay. Questions about whether the consumer wants a performance underlay to add life to their carpet, or to add comfort underfoot are perfect and easy for the consumer to relate to. PRICE

Interfloor

Adding value, building strength Interfloor is building on its strength in the added-value sector of the underlay and accessories market by extending the range of their best-selling products – and they have a very smart new catalogue to prove it. . A good example is the launch of new options in the Gripperrods Premier metal profiles range – a highly successful collection which, as well as providing an upsell opportunity for the retailer, improves customer satisfaction. So now, alongside shiny chrome and sophisticated brushed nickel, are options for brushed pewter and brushed black finishes. “These new colours are a direct response to shifting fashion trends and represent a potential profit booster for our customers, aligning with our mission to provide them with diverse options for their own customers,” says Interfloor’s Gary Cowley. “And the top quality point of sale display makes a quality statement in store for the retailer.”

“These new Gripperrods Premier metal profiles are a direct response to shifting fashion trends and represent a potential profit booster for our customers, aligning with our mission to provide them with diverse options for their own customers,” says Interfloor’s Gary Cowley. And this is just two ranges that Interfloor has to offer – the brand new catalogue which runs to more than 100 pages and has all the underlay and accessories you could ever need for any installation!

More renu, less landfill In underlay, it is Interfloor’s pioneering range of planet-friendly renu that is attracting attention. This flagship range of underlay is 98% recycled, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, keeping waste from landfill, and is 100% recyclable itself. Now, Intefloor has added two qualities alongside the original renu green which is 9mm thick and 160kg/m3 density. New renu violet is the same thickness but a little lighter at 120kg/m3 and renu yellow is the top product at 11mm and 160kg/m3. “We’re delighted that the popularity of renu has allowed us to add to the range with options to meet consumers’ different needs,” says Lynn Bamber. “This is an underlay with a great story to tell and excellent performance to offer.”

Innovation and expectation

Stopgap 1600, designed for use over underfloor heating

Constant innovation is the expectation of the loyal customers of F. Ball & Co and The Flooring Show was an opportunity to show the latest developments and this year the company had made improvements inside and out! Inside, it was the launch of Stopgap 1600 – a new fast-drying, fibre-reinforced smoothing compound that is formulated especially for use over underfloor heating systems. On the outside, it was the unveiling of a smart and informative new packaging design across its range – see panel. Underfloor heating is steadily gaining in popularity due in part to its efficiency and effectiveness in open spaces, and also its appropriateness to work with the new heat pumps that are coming in to residential use. Stopgap 1600 can be applied between three and 40 mm thick to encapsulate electrical wired or water-fed underfloor heating and cooling systems over a wide range of internal subfloors including screed, concrete, boards, plywood and ceramic or quarry tiles. “We wanted to use the technology available to us to create the optimal smoothing compound for application over underfloor heating systems that are increasingly part of a new build or refurbishment project,” said sales director Darren Kenyon. “This means combining suitability for application at greater thickness is an ordinary smoothing compound and over an extensive range of subfloors.” And it’s fast. Stopgap 1600 is walk-on hard from three hours after application and ready to receive floor coverings in as little as 12 hours.

Snappy wrappers

Stopgap 1600 was a double debut at Harrogate as the first product to display F. Ball’s sharp new packaging livery. The simplified packaging has been redesigned to aid selection and achieve visual consistency across the range – with key features highlighted by distinctive icons. Product-specific colour schemes complement the strong F Ball branding and support product identification and differentiation. QR codes on the packaging provide a link to the product’s technical data sheet in addition to a video demonstrating its application.

Quick-Step

Alpha award achievement Quick-Step returned to The Flooring Show as part of Unilin Flooring UK & Ireland, showing its market-leading collections of wood, laminate and vinyl floors. With a full range of displays including the recently updated Alpha Vinyl collection, Quick-Step demonstrated just why it is considered one of the world’s top flooring brands.

Matthew Brook, national sales manager, Moduleo, says: “The popularity of herringbone doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon, so our design team has been working hard to create the perfect plank for UK homes. That’s Roots Herringbone Classic. Its dimensions make for a versatile plank that gives a fantastic herringbone look and, most importantly, a pattern with the proportions to have a space-enhancing effect in typical UK rooms.” Herringbone Classic joins Herringbone Short – a plank that works well in large open plan areas – and can be used alongside Moduleo planks and tiles to create a unique floor.

In fact, Quick-Step’s new Alpha Vinyl Ciro herringbone collection was also awarded Gold in the Flooring Innovation Awards (FIA), presented during the show. Picking up the prestigious title in the Smooths category, Ciro was judged by an independent panel as the best innovation of the year across wood, laminate, cork and vinyl floors.

Niall Cassidy, regions sales manager UK & Ireland, Unilin Flooring, said: “We’re proud of Ciro and believe it to be the best all-round vinyl for herringbone installations. Fast to install and with less waste, as well as comfortable and quiet, Ciro is a simpler solution to herringbone that’s unmistakably Quick-Step.”

“We’re seeing more people wanting to try out different things with their floor and Moduleo makes it all possible,” continues Matt. For example, an open plan living space can use a bold terrazzo to zone the kitchen right next to Herringbone Classic elsewhere, or you can switch between classic planks and herringbone designs in a matching shade to bring a sense of flow while still creating a feeling of separate areas.”

Alpha Vinyl Ciro features the innovative Unizip click profile which needs just one plank type, allowing for a much simpler and faster installation. This revolutionary system also minimises installation waste, as it’s much easier to know how many planks are required. Ciro also features an integrated underlay that makes the floor even easier to install, more comfortable and much quieter.

Roots Herringbone Classic is now available on display boards for use on all existing Moduleo displays. If you missed this year’s show, ask your ASM about Roots Herringbone Classic and how to benefit from Moduleo’s most versatile herringbone plank ever.

Whereas most vinyl floors have three or four depths of texture, the Alpha Vinyl Bloom collection now features up to 75 depths which tracks every detail for a design that’s more realistic than any other vinyl on the market.

Fells Carpets

Abstracts attract Fells Carpets were basking in the glory of their Gold prize in the Flooring Innovation Awards announced at Harrogate for its Runswick Bay collection of tonal plains and geometrics. This range, and its success, says a lot about Fells approach to design – bold, unique patterns and, in this case, eco aware – a wilton construction woven from recycled PET with 120 bottles going into every metre.

“We like to stick our necks out on pattern and design – and while we get an odd one wrong, it’s worth it when we get the important ones right,” says Carl Cummings, Commercial Director of Fells. What’s “right” at the moment are abstracts and tonal designs. Fells carefully creates its collections during the year and has steadily been introducing more Carl Cummings (right) shows lthe latest abstract designs colour into those ranges. Tonal designs fall into that sweet spot for consumers who are bored by plains and not quite bold enough for contrasty patterns and Silken Moments is the company’s best seller in this sector. It’s a 2-ply saxony with 12 options in subtlely shaded patterns. T 0113 307 1900 • www.fellscarpets.co.uk

MasterPiece

Solving retailers’ real-world issues The smart thing about MasterPiece is that they listen to the real-world issues that retailers face every day and try to make life easier for them – a good approach to getting happy customers! So alongside the sophisticated measuring, planning and estimating functions for which the software has made its name, a bunch of highly practical additions have been developed to provide smooth running in-store, for aspects that often engender hassle and hiccup. The latest is a ‘Part-Fits’ handler, where a customer’s larger order may be split into more than one fitting event; the system will calculate and print what’s required to load into the van for each ‘Part Fit’ and provide the fitter with tailored plans and fitting sheet for each Part-Fit event.

Ballpark quoting has been a popular add-on this year, allowing in-store staff, both experienced and novice, to rapidly give consumers answers on the cost of their installations, based on answering focused questions about their rooms. MasterPiece is further developing this function to allow the ballpark quote to be refined in the customers home, for greater accuracy. Then there’s a diary for scheduling fitters and estimators. This is used several roles: by the sales staff to book measures; by the fittings manager to schedule fitting events, and the fitter gets his own dairy on his mobile phone, with ability to take customer signature and photos on completion. The system intelligently asserts the duration of fit, and in addition captures the time band of arrival agreed with the customer and also the estimated travel time to next event. There is also a new adhoc sales function to track the smaller in-store sales such as rugs, trims, anti-slip, etc. It’s this attention to detail that makes the difference. 52

Make an Entrance

Mats inlaid with integrity Make An Entrance are pretty special people who have turned custom entrance matting into an artform and done so with exceptional levels of integrity and style. This is a family business with a back story. Co-founded in 2005 by Sam and Stuart Burlton, it was Stuart’s father Allen who ran a mat factory for the Royal School for the Blind in the 90s. When the last mat maker experienced in working with coir was about to retire, the couple decided to ensure the skills didn’t disappear.

A new company was born and has grown into an operation with an exemplary product range and impressive social values – 80% of the staff are female, each hand stitched mat is individually signed by the maker, and the team works with groups of disadvantaged people. Make An Entrance has a diverse product portfolio for custom and standard mats sold through retailers and branded business mats. The central heritage product is bespoke, made-to-measure coir matting which is individually hand crafted at their factory in Lincolnshire. Mainstream ranges include PVC backed coir mats in several qualities from Britain’s best to a budget entry-level option and the company also supplies a wide range of synthetic coir products including ribbed and printed options. Cavalier Carpets

Heritage – and happenings Cavalier are celebrating 50 years of family-owned heritage but they are not dwelling on the past – five impressive launches at the show bring them right up to date with contemporary trends. Most distinctive was Companions, carpeting the whole Cavalier stand with a 3-colour yarn creating an intricate abstract graphic pattern. This style is akin to some PP ranges but this is a top quality 80/20 derived from colours in the popular Cosmpolitan range and for us this was one of the show’s real winners.

Three stylish wool loops made their debut alongside one another – undyed Owlet in two options as a soft level loop and a textured two-level; Coastal Loop, a textured two-ply construction in two designs: and Hawk Loop, a tough, competitively-priced functional loop. On the man-made side, Elixir is Cavalier’s latest polyester – superior softness in a seriously quality cloth which is available in 2 options including a 78oz sumptuous heavyweight. And the family favourite PP range Distinctions was not left out of the action with a colour makeover. T 01254 268 000 • www.cavaliercarpets.co.uk

rothers Hans and Nathan Lowe carry B on the tradition. “It’s not just our family business, we have several generations of many families working with us and it’s the personal approach that underpins our value,” says Hans.

Gekko

Just say no – to DCM The message from Gekko is simple – just say no dichloromethane – and they have transformed their adhesives business to deliver safer spray solutions to flooring fitters. The parent company, Quin Global, has pioneered research and development to avoid the use of dichloromethane, CFCs and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) wherever possible. “We took this decision three years ago after speaking to fitters – they deserve better health and safety at work,” says Rachael Morgan, category manager.

Rachael has 20 years’ experience in the chemical industry and 12 of those in industrial adhesives and she is an expert evangelist on the issue. “Everybody was doing the same old thing. Using cost driven and dangerous formulations which are known to be carcinogenic,” says Rachael. “We knew we had the innovation and the foresight to give people the chance to choose a safer solution – it’s the right thing to do and it’s our responsibility to the industry.” The result is a complete range of DCM-free options for almost every flooring application – and the range is growing all the time. The adhesives are packaged in pre-pressurised canisters and aerosols and delivering the same performance as conventional products at a very similar price. Sample packs are available to fitters who want to try out a safer solution. T 01738 494919 • www.gekko-adhesives.com

Unifloor – Jumpax

Smarter than screed Jumpax is winning over more and more fitters who welcome the switch from screed to an instant dry floor levelling system that allows same day installations for floors and solves lots of subfloor problems.

L to R, Zen and Ecozy pictured with Cor Van Dijk and Andrew Bramall of Betap.

Betap Back to the future Now it's easy over UFH The two self-adhesive MDF components of Jumpax are quickly and easily laid as a free-floating subfloor, instantly smoothing over typical irregularities and eliminating the need for screeds, primers, ply boards and nails. It is not necessary to remove old floor coverings, loosening screeds or surface contamination. Now the latest innovations allow the same fast and clean approach to the increasingly popular market for underfloor heating – a trend accelerated by the introduction of domestic heat pumps. Unifloor’s standard products can be used in combination with various installation tecniques but for waterbased underfloor heating systems , a clever combination of MDF and gypsum create a highly stable floor with a very low tog rating.

Betap are back again – not only to Harrogate but with a new brand. “Back Again” is their clever new recycled backing concept which is a key component of a future in which Betap forsee that virgin raw materials will no longer be used. Action Back-Again is made from 100% recycled PET while Fusion Back-Again is made with 90% recycled content fibre and the aim is to avoid latex by laminating these backings to carpet ranges of the same fibre – the mono-polymer approach. And mono-polymer means genuine, affordable recyclability at the carpet’s end of life back into materials that can make new carpets without virgin materials. This is a future the industry is going to hear a lot more about.

“It takes time for us to spread the word about Jumpax but once fitters try this approach they are instant supporters of the system to save them time and effort,” says Marcel Moll of Unifloor. T 07881 451682 • www.unifloor-underlay.com

New Lecco, Varenna and Garda line up Meanwhile, Betap are pressing ahead and two new polyester launches demonstrated the principle – the aptly Ecozy, a smart saxony in 13 colours and its heavyweight partner Zen in eight colours (see picture). Elsewhere the Betap presentation was bristling with abundant new launches including three new entry level polyproylenes Lecco, Varenna and Garda and two premium ranges Delicious and Sentiment. Meanwhile, Montagu has been produced on tenth gauge and on fusion backing and established heavy felt favourite New Montego has a new colourbank with 13 options. Fast, clean installation

Metro

Let there be light The Metro buying group prides itself on their exemplary marketing support to members and just to make sure you notice this, they’ve put their name up in lights – or your name! Highly impactful, double-sided lightbox display units are the latest addition to the impressive portfolio of marketing and merchandising resources that Metro Group offers, from business cards to store front makeovers, customised to their member’s own retail brands or for the group’s popular Carpet 1st own label.

In-store lightbox displays make a big impact

“Nobody does marketing like we do,” says Metro’s operations director Steve Depport. “We want our members to drive their success by investing in the promotion of their own businesses.” A key benefit is that the group gives back half the members’ annual subscription fee to put towards purchases from their marketing catalogue – a range of products and services that is also discounted below commercial pricing. All this, plus the discounted pricing benefits of a major buying group and a raft or wrap-around services that makes Metro a popular choice for retailers. T 01204 393 539 • www.carpetfirst.co.uk

RBV Spreading the value “Hands-on and helpful” is how Harrogate newcomer RBV Flooring describe themselves and that’s not a bad mission statement for the Yorkshire-based wholesale business that is steadily growing its offer to retailers and fitters. “We have a lot of experience in the industry and get good feedback for the level of support we offer,” says commercial manager Chris Bellaby. “Now we’re busy extending our range of flooring and spreading the reach of our business across the North and into the Midlands.”

RBV has a strong track record in competitively-priced vinyl from the launch of the latest styles such as the new Monaco feltback cushion vinyl that made its debut in Harrogate to carefully selected LVT ranges. And they also build packages of remnants and clearance stock along with a wide choice of designs and styles. The carpet portfolio at RBV is gaining momentum too and the show saw the launch of a new budget line saxony Castlefield, an exclusive range with a 950g pile weight on felt backing in five colours. LeoLine Premium display style Since relaunching with a vision to make cushion vinyl the contemporary and savvy way to create the floor people want, LeoLine has been focused on reigniting its existing retail network. But as its appearance at The Flooring Show underlined, this is just the beginning for the new look LeoLine. The brand showed its new premium display that not only gives cushion vinyl a more aspirational perspective, but that also brings retailers improved service and experience. The new stand gives a better shopping experience than previous LeoLine displays and places more focus on the design and quality of LeoLine collections. The smart black finish, built-in LED lighting and swatch displays that appear to float, are all cues that LeoLine is a floor that’s not only good value, but which can also bring on-trend and classic designs, and authentic natural looks.

Stuart Reeves, sales director UK for sheet vinyl, says: “We’ve updated our stand over the years with new graphics, but this is an entirely different construction and style of unit that shares more in common with luxury vinyl and carpet displays. It’s intended to lift LeoLine away from the perception that it’s a floor chosen because of price. As part of that, we want retailers to think differently about the floor and so our premium stand comes with added value – the first for range updates, exclusive promotions and regular visits from a dedicated brand manager to name some.” The premium display also comes with an enhanced website listing as the first result for Find a Retailer searches within a 20km radius of the store. After its preview at The Flooring Show, LeoLine is now making a series of further improvements to the premium display before releasing final production versions in 2024. Carpet Recycling UK Encouraging interest Compared to previous years, it was refreshing to see more sustainable product ranges being displayed by manufacturers at the show this year, which demonstrates the desire for change and responsibility for recyclability at end of life, according to Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK).

CRUK Scheme Manager Adnan Zeb-Khan said: “There was a lot of interest in what we offer through our membership and how we are helping the sector to become more sustainable, through the waste it generates and new product designs. There is still a high percentage of retailers attending our stand unaware of what is achievable and possible through better waste management practices who need more support and guidance “In addition to our usual conversations, we also engaged in discussions with the sector on looking for alternative solutions and materials for the production of carpets and textile flooring; for example, looking for alternative replacements for latex, backings and single polymer products," said Adnan. "It was encouraging to see a shift change in manufacturers displaying their sustainable and recycled content product ranges. The message is getting through about the need to do more to make carpet and textile flooring more readily recyclable and more sustainable for the future.” With 17 core members, their 135-strong membership and wider network, the independent, not-for-profit trade association exhibits at the annual show to support its members, while providing information on issues surrounding, waste management, prevention through reuse, recycling options, potential legislative changes and product design. CRUK’s 17 core members include: Balsan, Betap, Brintons Carpets, Condor Group, Cormar Carpets, ege Carpets, Furlong Flooring, Gradus, Headlam Group, IVC Commercial, Likewise Floors, Milliken, Modulyss, Rawson Carpet Solutions, Shaw, Tarkett and Victoria Group. They are taking voluntary producer responsibility for the products they place on the market and striving to reduce waste in production as well as for their customers, helping to create cost savings. For the first time at the Harrogate Flooring Show, the event presented its 2023 Sustainability Award to Ulster Carpets from a total of 27 entrants, demonstrating a collective industry desire to win such an award. FLOORING FACTSHEET

ADHESIVES SELECTION CHECKLIST

The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time:

Subfloor:

The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked.

What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard.

Odour:

While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces.

Low odour, solvent-free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.

Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.

Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.

Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured.

The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation.

ADHESIVE TYPES Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticised PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors. Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels. Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive. Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.

THE SMOOTHING COMPOUND DEVELOPED FOR UNDEFLOOR HEATING

Special Performance: Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments.

Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.

Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but this criteria must be checked where appropriate.

STOPGAP 1600 is the reliable solution for encapsulating electric and water-fed underfloor heating systems. Backed by the F. Ball systems guarantee. Find out more at f-ball.com/1600

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you THE don’t need a leap of faith STOCKLISTS Feburary 2022 to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

flexibility to run your business the way you want

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 74

• Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support

Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam • This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will...

• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber • A more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

www.unifloor.nl

Laminate underlay • There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination • A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

www.underlay.com

Underfloor heating underlay • Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk

Pre-tackified underlay • A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired. Underlayment for LVT • This provides a smooth surface on which you can glue down immediately. If there is a time or acoustic issue or a problematic underfloor, a stable, smooth dual underlay system will provide the best solution.

THE STOCKLISTS November 2023

CLASSIC

Crumb rubber • Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Felt • This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets.

THE STOCKLISTS November 2023

Flooring factsheet Vinyl Flooring Vinyl is a fast growing sector of the flooring market due to its durability at relatively low cost and huge range of designs available. Sheet vinyl and cushion floor by the roll are popular but the sector is dominated by LVT. In reality, most of the products sold today are “LVP”, Luxury Vinyl Planks, as wood decors are more popular than ceramics and stone but the term LVT is still used to cover the whole non-sheet market.

Benefits

• Huge choice in terms of decors across wood, ceramic, stone and geometric designs

• I mpressive realism – not just in the design but infinishing

techniques that allow for wood knots you can feel, tiles you can grout, etc. See appearance options.

• Excellent performance in durability for high traffic areas, scratch resistance and cleanability. Vinyl also tends to be much more nonslip than natural materials. Some products are water resistant for bathrooms and kitchens.

www.bramptonchase.co.uk

Product options

• Dry back – a sheet or tile that needs to be fixed to the sub-floor using an adhesive.

• Self-adhesive – tiles with a peel-off backing paper to stick to the

sub-floor. Some tiles have adhesive overlaps to stick to each other rather than the sub-floor.

• Loose lay vinyl – tiles that simply drop onto the floor and rely on

a high friction backing to keep them in place – they demand a very sound, level sub-floor but are the easiset type of tile to lay or replace.

Click – tiles that have a mechanical jointing system to attach to • Warm and soft to touch compared to ceramic and stone floors - and • one another (like a locked tongue and groove system) and ‘float’ on a good heat insulator anyhow, and suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.

• Sound reduction – vinyl has neglible impact sound compared

to the tap/click of laminate and transmits less sound and vibration compared to solid floor.

• Considerably cheaper than the ‘real’ thing – both to buy and to fit – and tile/plank approach minimises wastage.

Installation

Installation preparation Vinyl requires a dry, sound, level subfloor as the relative thinness of vinyl and its light reflection performance will quickly reveal imperfections after installation as well as cause potential wear issues. Exisitng wooden/MDF floors may need a plywood underlay up to 6mm thick and then the joints will need to be skimmed or taped. Non-wood sub-floors will need a self-levelling screed to be laid to ensure a suitable base for the floor. A damp-proof membrane may be required depending on sub-floor moisture levels. However, new rigid core products are less flexible and can be laid more easily over existing floors – see Construction.

the sub-floor without being glued down. There are many proprietary versions of the click system which offer fast, clean installation and stability. Appearance options Vinyl tiles and planks cover a hugh variety of sizes and shapes and can be mix-and-matched to achieve an infinite number of designs. Current fashions include extra wide and long planks for wood through to very small planks for wood. Border effects can be easy to achieve in LVT.

www.krausflooring.co.uk

Other notable options include:

• Embossed – this is where the top clear layer of the tile has been

embossed to create a realistic texture that matches the style of the stone of wood decor. Registered embossed is the most authentic – the texture matches the design so that, for example, a wood knot or hand-scraped element in the wood design can be felt on the surface of the flooring.

• Grouting and grooving – vinyl tiles can be laid with grouting inlay strips or beads of vinyl for addewd realism – and there are acrylic grouts that can be applied. In wood decors, planks are available with v-grooves or bevelled edges between planks for added realism.

LVT construction

Top coating – A polyurethane or aluminium oxide coating provides protection against scratches and stains and gives enhances anti-slip. Wear layer – This is a key layer - determining the performance and resilience of the product. A 0.3mm (12 mil) wear layer is a good for heavy wear areas. Commercial installations need 0.5mm wear layers or above with 0.7mm at the top end. The wear warranties and guarantees carried by products will be based on this thickness. Decor layer – This is the decor itself - in essence it is a paper- or filmbased photographic inkjet print. (A few LVT floors have the image printed directly to the surface of the floor but this implies less image definition and different wear characteristics.)

PVC Middle Layer(s) Fibre Glass Layer(s) PVC Base Layer

THE STOCKLISTS November 2023

PVC and fibre glass layers – The construction ‘sandwich’ can vary between products but a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers for strength and flexibility and fibre glass layers for structural stability may be used. Any click-system profile will be incorporated into these layers. Products often use a combination of recycled vinyl which is cheaper and virgin PVC which lasts longer and is more stable. Rigid core LVT has a solid, less flexible PVC layer with maximum stability which means it can be laid over exisiting, less even flooring without showing imperfections and therefore avoiding wear problems. Base (or backing) layer – The final high density PVC layer varies according to the installation requirement and is designed for taking adhesive or as an ‘underlay’ for loose-lay and click installations. 79
