Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

General Rules for Spot Removal

4

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required. Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.) Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

SPROUTING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

The original carpet tile

SHEDDING All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.

6

• shedding • pulled loops

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

SHADING Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATIC Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL

FLATTENING

(SEE SHADING)

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

THE STOCKLISTS June 2009

SOILING Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages

- Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil

carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.

T HE R EGENCY

Collection

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

WOVEN

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop. Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality. Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms. CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas. Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours. Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms. CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability. BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.interfloor.com

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

www.interfloor.com

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.floorwise.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

We tick all the boxes!

Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to.

Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours.

A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line.

Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.

As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others.

the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality

Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.

Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of the product range to consumers with a market-leading modular POS system which they will deliver and design to suit your store.

Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers to provide products and services that ticks all the boxes.

100% recycled carpet Mohawk International takes old plastic bottles and turns them into beautiful, luxurious carpet... Hard to believe we know, but a plastic bottle you drink from today could one day become fibres in Mohawk’s carpet.

Make the most of the consumer’s love of all things green with the new Environmental Tombola featuring carpet manufactured from 100% recycled material

Polyethylene terephthalate (P.E.T) is the top quality resin required in the production of plastic drinks bottles. When recycled, it can be extruded into fibres that are far superior to lower-grade synthetic virgin fibres used in making other brands of carpet yarns. Mohawk recycles over 3 billion plastic bottles each year. By controlling every aspect of “Mohawk recycles over 3 billion the recycling plastic bottles each year.” process, Mohawk guarantees the highest standards of performance in its luxurious and beautiful carpet. From bottle to floor - that’s how we do it.

FlooringNews Crisp creative from Pownall Contemporary carpet brand Pownall has announced the launch of its new-look point of sale (POS) and revamped website as part of its refreshed brand identity, which accompanies its stylish new loop pile range, Fenland Loops. The sleek new POS and revitalised website have been designed to highlight all Pownall carpet ranges in a clean and modern style. Both have been developed with the findings of parent company Ryalux’s recent research initiative front of mind. Darren Clanford, creative director at Ryalux, comments: “The new Pownall POS incorporates crisp, bright photography encapsulating the latest interior trends, while providing the reassurance of the exemplary quality that the brand is renowned for. “The POS has also been designed to allow the carpet to speak for itself with informative text deliberately kept to a minimum. ” The new Pownall website has been streamlined to provide a user-friendly resource. Having tailored the search function to individual requirements, users can search for carpet by range or by colour. The ‘find a retailer’ function has also been enhanced, and the quick delivery online sampling service allows customers to order up to five samples at a time. The POS will be rolled out to the retailer community from June 2009 and the new website is expected to go live in June. T 0845 6528811

Texture breakthrough in twist The stunning structured twist of Flamina from Vorwerk Carpets, relies on Invista’s Antron carpet fibre to become a carpet with looks that last. Widely varying pile heights are lifted through highlight tones and deepened through an underlying darker shade, giving a unique three-dimensional quality and the impression of grass breaking through moss. There is a palette of nine natural colours, ranging from a delicate cream to earthen brown. Flamina’s beauty owes a lot to its texture and so Vorwerk Carpets selected Antron carpet fibre to ensure that this remains for as long as possible. Antron is already respected by the specification community as a carpet fibre that offers a premium blend of wear resistance, soil repellency and resilience. Although soft to the touch, these Antron fibres also make it difficult for stains and dirt to stick to the surface of Flamina, making for a carpet that may be easier to clean. “Antron carpet fibre is ideal for residential use, bringing homeowners a carpet that is both hardwearing and simpler to maintain,” comments Ian Hammond, Sales Director,Vorwerk Carpets. “With styles such as Flamina upholding the texture and colour throughout their use is imperative and with Antron, these innovative carpets stand the best chance of looking good throughout their life.” T 0870 0104484 from The Stocklists

News Clear benefits of glass

Polyflor’s quicker clicker

Global composite solutions and building materials leader Owens Corning have announced the development of AdVeil - non-woven glass veil incorporating a new technology that brings cost and production benefits to the cushion vinyl (CV) flooring industry. Based on the company’s patented Advantex glass technology, AdVeil glass veil is supplied pre-filled with a proprietary inorganic formulation that reduces plastisol use up to 150 grams per square meter – a saving of up to 30 percent compared to conventional non woven glass veil offered in the marketplace. The product, which will initially be available in Europe, is the same thickness as standard veil, but a weight of 180 grams vs. 40 grams, making it less sensitive to creasing in the manufacturing process. Other attributes include an improved smooth-surface base for the design layer, significantly reducing the risk of printing defects and improving design quality; mechanical and dimensional stability; and high thermal stability

Polyflor’s award-winning website has been radically restyled and relaunched with a host of new, improved features, additional content and even simpler navigation.

“AdVeil glass veil not only provides cushion vinyl flooring manufacturers with a product that helps reduce raw material use and costs with only minor production modifications, it also allows them to deliver an enhanced product to their customers that improves their production efficiencies and end product,” said JeanJacques Michat of OCV Non-Woven Technologies. Underpinning the commercial and production advantages of AdVeil glass veil is its environmental profile, which fits with the increasingly tough demands from the flooring industry and consumers. AdVeil glass veil is manufactured with Advantex glass fibers, which are produced using Advantex glass furnace technology in a boron-free process, which when compared to traditional E-glass manufacturing technology results in up to a 90 percent reduction in fluoride emissions, more than 85 percent reduction in particulate emissions, and more than 65 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions. OF THE TRADE

David Cormack

Age: 43 Job Title: Marketing Director, Cormar Years with present company: 22 Years in flooring industry: 22 Previous roles in different companies: promotions manager, salesman Main non-work interests: spending most of the time with his wife and three daughters but also enjoys tennis, swimming and going to the cinema

The collapse of the housing market has got to be the major factor for most manufacturers and retailers today. The fact that the banks froze credit in terms of mortgages last year thus starving the market of house transactions has had a major effect, more so I would say than the any other factor in the last ten years.

Do you expect more casualties in the carpet sector before things pick up?

It certainly is likely that there will be more casualties, although I hope that there are none amongst the UK manufacturers and suppliers.

UK manufacturers generally have a higher cost base. How do you maintain your margins? With difficulty! Certainly it has been tough, but we have always been focused on cost reduction for as long as I can remember, not only in the lean times. And it has always been our philosophy that you mend the roof when the sun is shining, so we were already implementing changes prior to this recession.

Would it be easier NOT to be a market leader? We like to break new ground and keep ahead in the market and a consequence of this is, I suppose, that we are one of the market leaders. But I wouldn’t sacrifice the first two just to avoid being copied.

What’s the single most important key to success in flooring? I think the most important aspect of any business, whether it is flooring or farming is listening to your customers. If you are not giving them what they want in terms of product, price, quality or service, in comparison to your competitors, you are on a ‘sticky wicket’!

Which type of carpet product is going to sell much better in the next 5 years? It is difficult to believe that there will be a radical departure from the styles of carpet sold today. Looking back 5 years or even 10 the styles being sold in the market have not moved on that much. The big change is that carpets by and large have to work with other types of flooring within the home, so I guess that ‘statement’ carpets i.e. big patterns are going to struggle as opposed to more subtle neutrals and textures.

What’s your favourite flooring product?

The Primo Collection is my favourite, particularly the new Heavyweight Ultra quality which we are just launching. They are all tremendous value for money, which is so important at the moment and they are all easy clean, so they have real consumer appeal.

“Independent British retailers are terrific on service, which is demonstrated by the dogged survival of the independent sector against the multiples.” If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what would it be? Let’s concentrate on the positive first: independent British retailers are in the main terrific on service which is demonstrated by the ‘dogged’ survival of the independent sector against multiple retailers. If I was to be critical of anything it would be the visual side of the in store experience. I believe that by taking time out to lay out the displays professionally, without so much ‘clutter’ both inside the shop and in the shop window, it would help a lot of businesses and improve the image of the carpet trade.

What’s the key market issue/challenge today?

In your time in the trade, what has most surprised you?

Going back to my last point, I suppose the fact that still such a large percentage of carpet sold in the UK goes through independent retailers. In 20 odd years that I have been in the industry, the 70 /30% split hasn’t changed much. I have friends in other industries, one in particular in the wallpaper industry and there the retail trade has been decimated by large multiple retailers. So we are fortunate still to have such a diverse trade.

And most disappointed you?

I have got to say the reduction in UK carpet manufacturing and carpet yarn spinning. That has changed out of all proportion since the 1980’s.

What’s the oddest thing that’s ever happened to you in the trade?

An experience that was both odd and funny was when we went on a Cormar sales conference to Denmark and went on a steam boat on Silkeborg Lake. Everybody was given a plastic Viking Helmet as they boarded and there were light refreshments on-board.We disembarked after a couple hours at a restaurant on the shore of the lake and as our sales team entered the restaurant in their Viking Helmets, they could be heard singing ‘Neville’s Barmy Army‘.That was certainly unusual – but a lot of fun!

retailers respond to industry issues

The rep report…

Could do better? What retailers really think about the ambassadors of the flooring suppliers Most reps are doing a good job and know their stuff say, the retailers. But when asked if the quality of reps was getting better, a worrying 45% said no, with a third unsure. Only 23% of retailers said rep performance was improving. Flooring company reps are an essential link between the retailers working at the customer coalface and the manufacturers and distributors who are trying to anticipate consumer demand and respond efficiently. But retail rumours are that budget cuts meant less good reps are on the road - and there are claims that some reps are more interested in talking about their golf handicap than the latest products from their employers. The performance of company representatives and agents came under the spotlight with readers of The Stocklists in the latest Flooring Forum survey of our readers and the reps received a mixed report. The survey generated important pointers to improve the position. We asked what makes a good rep and the resounding answer was product knowledge – almost 80% of respondents rated this as the most – or next-to-most – important attribute. So you’ve either got it or you haven’t and the good news for the field sales teams (or maybe more for their managers!) is that retailers generally believe product knowledge is good – nearly 70% said most reps knew their stuff. Less reps appear to know the stuff of their competitors – a key issue on the high street. Retailers felt only about half of the reps they met had a good knowledge of the products they were competing with.

So what’s a rep for? Not surprisingly, the vast majority of our survey respondents – some 85% - said seeing new products and samples was the top job for the rep. But the question provoked a few moans and groans… “Why do Sales Managers send reps out with sampling they can’t leave,” complains a large Northern retailer. “If I see a product that floats my boat (but usually isn't in stock yet!) I ask ‘Ok leave a set of samples and once the product is in stock, we will bring in the colours we have had an interest in.’ No chance!!! How bizarre is that.” A smaller Southern retailer, who found most reps in general “not good at their job”, had a different complaint: “Most reps do not even check their products when they visit and many times we find products discontinued after their call.” Among the other topics our survey suggested for what reps are there for, we found that resolving complaints and queries was the second

70% say most reps know their own products well

Only 23% said the quality of reps is improving

And it all depends what kind of rep we’re talking about. One Southern retailer commented: “Manufacturers's reps concentrate on their products and have very good knowledge of their and their competitors products. Wholesale reps don't really care what you buy as long as you buy from them and agents do not represent their clients - they only want to increase their own income the easiest way they can!”

76% agree they see their reps “often enough”

A branch manager in a group of stores, also in the South, added the alarming story of two reps he asked to do a presentation of their products to be told: “You probably know more than we do about our products!”.

Only 26% of retailers felt reps understood their business

A Northern retailer comments: “Quality varies vastly from supplier to supplier. From most we receive an excellent service - being kept up to date with account turnover, ranges and merchandising (whilst this last element seems beneath some - especially multi company agents.) However, some other representatives we have not seen in over a YEAR!!”. 40

highest selection whereas as merchandising, which we thought would score highly received a low priority from our retailers. The big surprise was that the issue of profitability and margins was bottom among retailers priorities for their meetings with reps. And yet elsewhere in our survey, retailers strongly agreed that retailers didn’t really understand their business – only 26% felt reps know what really made retail tick. “Reps don’t really understand the retailer’s perspective,” said the owner of a Northern high street business.” A retailer in the Midlands raised an interesting point about the information the reps carried back to base: “Do they really give the company the feedback from the smaller retailer, or are they only interested in the bigger boys?” We asked whether you see your reps often enough – and/or whether they out-stay their welcome! And overall, it looks like reps have got it about right. More than 76% said they saw their reps “often enough” - only 14% saying “not often enough” and just 9% saying “too often” or “much too often”.This equated to a visit every month or every two months for month reps. The face-to-face time with reps was 30 minutes or less for the vast majority of calls and 81% of retailers said this was about right. Just 17% of respondents said the visits were “usually too long”. A black mark in the survey surrounds the equality issue. Paradoxically, the flooring industry has always been held to have a somewhat chauvinistic flavour despite the fact that the consumer decision-maker is very predominantly female. “Some of the mature male reps are very condescending towards female employees and treat them as a receptionist while looking for the male 'boss' - which often is definitely not the case!” said a Southern respondent. 70% in the survey said more reps should be women.

But our provocative assertion that reps were more interested in discussing golf than their latest products got the thumbs down from 51% of the responses – although 23% did agree with this claim. So in this survey, reps get round the course about on par – but maybe need a little more practice to improve against their handicaps.

Half of flooring sector ‘unaffected by recession’ The first snapshot of how the floor coverings market is changing as a result of the UK economic slowdown has been released by industry analysts Plimsoll Publishing. The findings suggest that the brunt of the slowdown is being felt by almost a quarter of the companies in the market. Surprisingly, almost half of those surveyed have been largely unaffected, maintaining their financial strength, margins and some managing to even increase sales. The study surveyed the UK’s Top 1000 Floor Coverings firms, based on their latest financial performance. Highlights extracted from the analysis show: Overall the market is showing no overall growth, compared to growth of almost 4% this time last year. However there is much changing amongst the players in the market as they jostle for precious sales, highlighted by the huge gap in performance. 323 firms have seen their sales decline, some by as much as 14% while 426 firms have seen their sales increase, some by as much as 15%.

Surprisingly, almost half of those surveyed have been largely unaffected, maintaining their financial strength, margins and some managing to even increase sales. David Pattison, Senior analyst at Plimsoll, explains the reasons behind the changing market. “The recession seems to have accelerated a shift in the market. Some companies have clearly been affected by those that have swapped to low cost alternatives or by the loss of a key client. Others are clearly benefiting from this move.” Overall profitability is slim, with most companies reporting profits of less than 1%.This is largely in line with last years figures as the early signs of recession were already taking an effect. However the gap between the very profitable and those missing out is widening. 554 firms have seen their profits fall, with one in three currently losing money but 446 firms have increased profitability, some reporting margins of over 5% David Pattison believes this is down to a number of factors. “The recession has been a good thing for a number of companies, it has sharpened their management and improved the accountability of the directors, so much so that these reorganisations are already leading to an increase in profitability.” T 01642 626422

Strong support for Domotex Leading European carpet show Domotex, planned for Hannover in January 2010, will further enhance its appeal to exhibitors and visitors after a strong showing earlier this year. “We have already seen a positive trend in registrations and strong interest on the part of companies that want to exhibit at this leading international trade fair for carpets and floor coverings,” confirms Stephan Kühne, Member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Messe AG. “Despite the difficult economic climate, numerous market leaders have booked the same amount of space as last year.To underpin this positive trend we will take steps to reinforce Domotex as the top international showplace for the carpet and floor coverings sector.” These modifications will include the reallocation of display categories to different halls, a new concept for contractworld, and the further development of individual displays,” he said. Domotex has reported a good result for the Asia/Chinafloor show in March this year with a display covering 89,125 square metres (compared with 88,000 in 2008). A total of 909 exhibitors from 38 countries (2008: 1,014) showcased their latest products, services and solution for the flooring trades. The event attracted 36,986 visitors. www.domotex.de from The Stocklists

SALES AGENTS Can we introduce you to some new business?

News Supacord is ‘class’ leader

Heckmondwike FB has supplied a complete flooring solution to the newly-built All Saints’ C of E Primary School in Bradford. The 420 pupil school, plus nursery for 30 children, recently underwent a major re-development, including enlargement and transfer to a new site. Over 1,000m2 of Supacord fibre bonded carpet tiles was specified in a stunning Blueberry shade for the library, food science room and communal areas, whilst the classrooms on the first floor level were fitted with Supacord Tiles in Arctic Blue. All the carpets were installed by Tyndales Flooring Group. The main contractor on site was ISG Regions Ltd. Supacord is widely used for educational buildings across the country because it is designed for areas of heavy wear and tear, as well as providing acoustic and thermal properties. Its durability and wide choice of colours available makes it equally suitable for office environments, retail outlets, libraries and public buildings. As well as low installation costs, Supacord is designed to offer anti-slip and antistatic properties, both of which are a major concern for schools, who are looking to protect students and their equipment. Interior designers, Robinson Design Ltd specified Heckmondwike FB’s Total Care carpet in Iris for the ground floor classrooms, which is used by the younger pupils. Total Care has an impervious backing and is bleach resistant, making it extremely easy to clean and highly resistant to permanent staining, which will prove a huge help in coping with the relatively high number of spills from the younger students. To complete the trio from Heckmondwike FB, the company supplied its Diamond range in Dolphin Blue, which was fitted in the main entrance area to create a welcoming ambience for pupils and visitors. Flower on Flooring News Credit crunch rugs All business sectors are currently keenly watching market activity to see how trade is developing and the flooring industry is no exception to this. Suppliers of rugs have, for the most part, taken a realistic view on the situation and made the necessary adjustments. Rugs with Flair, for example, reported that 2009 has seen an upsurge in non conventional fibres such as polyester, providing a luxurious and glossy finish, and has incorporated this into its new Starlet range within its 2009/10 portfolio. Starlet is available in an array of both vibrant and natural colours to match all interior designs. It has found, however, that traditional higher quality wool is still received very well, leading to the launch of the Taj premium range, incorporating Indian wool with cow hide and high/low piles for added detail. Bill Edgley, Melrose Textile Company managing director, said that overall the rug market is still reasonably buoyant, although price levels are somewhat lower. The trend towards larger rugs is continuing, usually on plain or semi-plain carpet or wood/laminate flooring. Unusual materials are a tiny percentage of the rug market and of little interest to mainstream customers, he said. ‘There are some beautiful rugs in traditional styles some with modern colourations using a

fine viscose yarn (faux silk) 1,000,000 points per sqm and less than many mid range polypropylene products. There are many examples of high/low textures usually from India or China with a relatively small quantity from Nepal.’ McThree Carpets stated that it has recently introduced several new ranges to provide added value products at competitive price points to help encourage sales. Gala combines a sturdy polypropylene backing of cream or black with up to four brightly coloured viscose pile options. The high value look and feel is not reflected in the price, however, due to the balance of the yarns, the company stated. Its Ventura range uses the basic flatweave structure but incorporates chenille yarn into the weft to give many more colour options. The high quality look and softness of the rugs enables them to be used in bedrooms and dining rooms at a relatively small cost increase. McThree also reports it has been one of the first to invest in the latest loom technology to make rugs with pile heights up to 7cm. Manhattan is its first range from its new loom, combining straight and twisted yarns to emulate hand made versions but at more competitive price levels.

Pacific ranges. Made from 100% wool, they combine style with attractiveness and durability, the company stated. Depth of choice is essential to cater for all tastes, says Plantation Rug, which constantly updates its offering to meet all requirements of style or budget. Vorwerk Carpets describes its Elemento range of rugs as groundbreaking, capturing the continual movement of sand through the use of handmade techniques and New Zealand wool. Felted to a size of up to 12mm, thick threads with pile heights up to 4.5cm are used to create the Tundra, Sahara and Hammada designs. The company stated that the range reflects its position at the forefront of creative textile flooring. News Slimming on price and profile The new slim-line Easyrod from Stairrods (UK) combines affordability with an innovative and sleek design. It offers the retailer and carpet fitter a low priced entry level for staircase accessories and the opportunity to add value and additional profit to each stair carpet installation. By introducing this basic priced stair rod at a time when many households are feeling the pinch, Stairrods (UK) aims to capitalise on those homeowners looking to improve their home rather than move. The new slim-line Easyrod from Stairrods (UK) is for home owners on a tight budget looking to add both style and value to their property. Stairrods (UK) anticipates that it will cost the homeowner just over £100 plus fitting to transform a typical thirteen step staircase with these chic stair rods. The uniquely designed Easyrod bracket is versatile; it caters for both fitted stair carpets and runners and for both straight and winding stairs. Simple to fix in just minutes, the Easyrod creates an affordable decorative feature at the heart of the home. Matching brackets hold the rod firmly in place and are each attached to the stair riser by a single screw. The Easyrod emulates the look of the popular Homepride range with its acorn finials and polished metal finish. The slim-line, 9mm (3/8”) rod is made from anodised, hollow aluminium in one of four metal finishes: polished brass, bronze, black and chrome. Each rod can be ordered made-to-measure or a fitter can easily cut them down on site. The Easyrod is the latest decorative accessory from Stairrods (UK) to combine attractive styling with affordability. Other products in the Easy range are Easybind, an innovative runner and rug binding, and Easystuds, an attractive method of fitting stair runners. T 01207 591176

The British Wool column Brockway adds colour to best selling British Wool range Some of Brockway Carpets’ most popular ranges are getting a makeover for the summer, responding to the trend towards stronger fashion-led colours and giving retailers a great opportunity for more sales. The best selling range Florian, in British Wool, is being updated with ten new colours. The new shades include some of the new season trends for greys and striking amethyst purples to jade and sea green, which Brockway believe will give an extra boost to this popular selling line. Florian, a twist pile range in 60oz British Wool is available in both 4-metre and 5-metre widths, offers the classic benefits of British Wool, being highly resilient to footfall while soft in texture. This British Wool carpet is an excellent range to choose for use throughout the home – particularly in areas where there are regular walk paths such as the hall and stairs and main living areas. “Florian continues to offer superb value for the home; the new colours bring it right up to date with current trends for stronger shades,” said Steve Glover at Brockway.

Penthouse gets vote of confidence from retailers Penthouse Carpets have won an award for Carpet Supplier of the Year – in a competition run by CFR magazine. The Rochdale based company was selected by the trade – which Paul Speakman, Sales Director commented, “Makes the award more worthwhile to us.” Penthouse Carpets deal almost exclusively with independent retailers creating a very clear pricing policy, which ensures that everybody pays the price as quoted in the price list. “We play no games and offer no gimmicks; we are about straightforward value for money.” Penthouse attributes their ability to deliver consistently high quality product and service to the fact that they put British Wool and British yarn suppliers at the core of their manufacturing. “We place quality, value and service at the core of our priorities and we are delighted that the retailers have appreciated our efforts.” “We enjoy a really good working relationship with Penthouse Carpets, they are immensely loyal to British Wool as a fibre and place significant emphasis on the yarn, of course, this is critical in producing a good carpet that will stand up to use on the floor. Equally, they make a quality product at an excellent price and they wrap it with a high standard of service. This award is a deserved recognition of those standards of business,” said Tim Booth, product development manager of the British Wool Marketing Board.

New British Wool show cards prove a hit Two new British Wool show cards released last month and destined for the retail showroom are already attracting great interest from manufacturers keen to distribute them to their retailers.

The British Wool show cards are being distributed now.

The ‘Origin is Everything’ and the ‘Natural Integrity’ campaigns have been developed to give key messages to the retail floor and help the consumer to understand the core benefits of British Wool. “As the natural, sustainable, biodegradable fibre for carpet, we are delighted that these smart POS cards have achieved such good interest,” said Tim Booth, product development manager at the BWMB. The cards are supported by a variety of marketing initiatives by the BWMB, which is rolling out a new campaign for British Wool.

Mayfield Carpets launch Quartz in British Wool Mayfield Carpets has launched a new British Wool range bringing quality and exceptional value to retailers. The Rochdale based company has worked in close partnership with one of the leading wool rich yarn spinners to create what they believe is one of the best value twist ranges on the UK market today.

Offering six stylish and commercial colourways at highly competitive cut length prices, supported by an excellent roll stockist deal, the range has been designed to act as a best quality ‘value option’. The product is 80% British Wool with a natural jute backing, and Mayfield Carpets feel that they have not compromised on this product that allows independent retailers to compete with the most aggressive carpet multiples.
