Carpet&FlooringReview The six million metre manufacturer

with a production line 430 metres long, an annual production capacity of at least 6 million square metres - or approximately 7,000 square metres per shift per day - the brand-new Unilin vinyl factory in wielsbeke can boast some staggering figures. But even more impressive is the plant’s top-of-the-line technology, where quality, innovation and sustainability go hand in hand.

“Vinyl flooring is not in any way a new product,” explains Marieke Callens, Lead Product Manager for LVT at Unilin. “Bonded vinyl floors have been rapidly gaining popularity throughout Western Europe over the past half a century. The past five years, however, have noted a significant rise in the vinyl flooring market in the form of planks fitted with a click system.” The most interesting opportunity for Unilin, however, lay in a new category: floating vinyl floors. In Belgium the luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) sector has since grown into a worthy rival for traditional laminate and hardwood floors. However, 95% of all LVT flooring sold in this country is produced in Asia. Besides the logistic nightmares associated with production in Asia, these products are often of a dubious quality. “Although many Asian manufacturers have plenty of experience with bonded LVT floors, most of them have no expertise in the field of click technology,” adds Marieke Callens. “The production of vinyl flooring is also highly labour-intensive in Asia, in which a greater percentage of human input is unfortunately accompanied by a higher percentage of flaws and imperfections. All of this results in the inability of many of these floors to achieve the desired performance in terms of stability.” Callens explains: ‘Our vast experience with patented click technologies such as Unifit and Uniclic has given us a leading edge on virtually every other producer of vinyl in the world.’ Not only that, Unilin’s house brands Quick-Step and Pergo stand out far above any rivaling brands with regard to aesthetics. “There are few who can even come close to Unilin when it comes to the detailed definition of the wood patterns, or the matte surface structure that ensures that what you see is also natural.”

NEWS Safer smiles

Polyflor vinyl safety flooring from the high performance Polysafe Verona PUR range gave a fresh new look to Midland Orthodontics dental practice in Sutton Coldfield recently.

Polysafe Verona was specified for the project as the specialist orthodontic practice required a safe, easy to clean and attractive floorcovering that would provide underfoot slip resistance for patients and employees, creating a professional look that complemented the existing décor. The pale blue Skyline 5205 shade was chosen to create the desired crisp, clean look. Specified and installed throughout treatment, circulation and storage areas by Lynex Flooring of West Bromwich, the finished flooring was coved and welded to provide a secure and hygienic finish. In an area which needs to be continually clean, Polysafe Verona has a cross linked and UV cured polyurethane PUR reinforcement to facilitate a simple maintenance regime. Vince Lynex, owner of flooring contractors Lynex Flooring added, “We were impressed with Polysafe Verona PUR range from the moment we saw it and quickly specified it for this install. The product was flexible and easy to fit, cove and weld on-site. The finished result looks outstanding and our client is delighted with the end result. I think the flooring really contributes to a fresh environment that meets all expectations.” Polysafe Verona safety flooring features carborundum-free, virtually invisible safety particles to provide sustainable wet slip resistance throughout its guaranteed lifetime. The HSE compliant Verona range meets the EN13845 European Standard for safety flooring and the range achieves 36+ on the Pendulum wet test with a surface roughness of 20 microns and above. The range also performs in the 50,000 cycles abrasion test to ensure sustainability of slip resistance. Polysafe Verona flooring contains recycled content and is 100% recyclable through the Recofloor vinyl take back scheme. T 0161 767 1111

Fresher floor for caring

Polyflor’s vinyl flooring has helped create a fresh, clean and welcoming environment at a new urgent care centre at Halton Hospital in Runcorn recently. Polyflor’s Pearlazzo PUR highly durable sheet vinyl flooring and Polysafe Wood fx PUR safety flooring were installed throughout the facility by flooring contractors Jepsons Limited of Darwen, Lancashire. This facility was originally a minor injuries department with an out of hours GP’s surgery attached but thanks to the refurbishment it has been transformed by main contractors JMBC Ltd into an urgent care centre which opened in February 2015. The centre expects to attract an increased number of patients, from the 40 per day it saw as the previous minor injuries unit to up to 120 per day as a successful urgent care centre. Pearlazzo PUR sheet vinyl flooring in complementary fresh shades of Lemon Ice 9702 and Mint Crisp 9706 were used in corridors, nursing stations, reception areas and waiting rooms at Halton Hospital. Available in 24 contemporary shades including neutrals, pastels and brights, the Pearlazzo PUR homogeneous flooring range is popular for healthcare environments due to its UV cured and cross-linked polyurethane PUR coating which allows for an easier cleaning and polish-free maintenance regime. As a contrast to the pastel tones used in corridors within the hospital, Polysafe Wood fx PUR safety flooring in Warm Beech 3297 was fitted in the treatment rooms. With an attractive wood effect design and virtually invisible safety particles within the vinyl, the Wood fx range was an ideal choice for creating inviting, non-clinical spaces with the added benefit of sustainable wet slip resistance, particularly around sinks and areas of potential spillage T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

NEWS Branching out

Green Tree Distribution has announced its relocation from Stone to new premises in central Stoke-on-Trent. The result of the move means that all sales and distribution operations will be centralised at the new premises, part of a planned business reshuffle.

The new premises, on Sneyd Hill Industrial Estate, are ideally located in central Stoke-on-Trent. The nearby A500 provides access to the A50 in the East, and the M6 Junctions 15 (to the South) and 16 (to the North). As a result, this move will increase delivery standards for Green Tree’s fleet nationwide. The facilities offered at the new office support the growing needs of the business. The new distribution centre has ample office space for the sales & distribution team, while an internal area of 9,129m2 allows Green Tree to increase its stock holding for its White Glove delivery service. Centralisation of Green Tree’s operations has been in the pipeline for a while, guaranteeing a better service by having the sales and distribution team in one location. The closure of the Green Tree South depot has meant all business is now being run by a single office, allowing the team to co-ordinate stock and deliveries more efficiently. With new products to launch in September for independent retailers, and continued success servicing ScS and House of Fraser, Green Tree Distribution is excited for its future leading into 2016. Seaside Secura

Polyflor’s market leading commercial and residential vinyl flooring was recently installed at wales & west Housing’s new housing development in the popular seaside town of Porthcawl, Bridgend.

Around 2500m² of Polyflor flooring was installed by Artisan Flooring of Swansea to help create 40 brand new, affordable homes at New Road Court which has been built by local construction company Jehu in partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council and the Welsh Government. Consisting of 24 one bedroom apartments and 16 two bedroom apartments, this new social housing development cost approximately £3.9 million to build. Polyflor’s Secura PUR flooring in the bold Antique Herringbone 2129 design was installed throughout the apartments in kitchens, corridors, bedrooms and living spaces. The Secura range of luxury vinyl sheet flooring beautifully replicates the look of natural materials, with this chosen design featuring an inbuilt herringbone pattern and authentically reproduced wood grain and knots to give a rustic feel in a practical loose lay format. The cross linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement PUR provides an easy to clean surface and prevents stains and scuff marks, reducing cleaning time and costs. High performance, decorative Polysafe safety flooring was fitted in the bathrooms to provide sustainable slip resistance in these frequently wet areas. Polysafe Wood fx PUR in authentic Rustic Oak 3337 was installed in the ground floor apartment bathrooms whilst Polysafe Wood fx Acoustix PUR, which features an integrated closed cell foam backing for improved acoustic performance (impact sound reduction levels of 19dB), was used in the upper floor apartments. These wood effect designs feature virtually imperceptible safety aggregates for slip resistance guaranteed to last the lifetime of the product. Polysafe Hydro Evolve in Indus 4251 with its raised emboss for sustainable wet slip resistance in barefoot areas was also installed in some of the ground floor bathrooms where a walk in shower suitable for disabled use have been fitted. All of Polyflor’s flooring ranges included in the project contain recycled material and are 100% recyclable via the Recofloor vinyl take back scheme. Measuring up for mosques

Leoline is introducing a semi-custom concept for mosques, combining the practicality of cushion flooring with the design requirements necessary for these religious buildings.

Available in a four-metre width in order to reduce seams in the large open spaces commonly found in mosques, the design features a wide stripe that gives a modern interpretation of traditional mosque carpets. Already proving popular in the Middle East, where its hygiene and cleanability advantages are favoured, the semi-custom concept is available from 1,000 linear metres and provides a solution to the unique demands of mosques:

The mosque concept can be specified in suitability from Light Commercial (Class 31) through to Very Heavy Commercial (Class 34) in accordance with the specifications required and budget available. In Silento specification, it is also available with 18dB of sound insulation, helping to minimise impact noise and transference between levels.

Richard Harris, Marketing Manager at F. Ball and Co. Ltd., said: “This latest addition to the F. Ball adhesives range is flexible, rapid curing and suitable for use in a wide range of settings, both indoors and outside. With excellent gap filling characteristics, this versatile product will benefit contractors on a variety of jobs. We're always researching and developing new products based on the needs of UK flooring contractors and I'm confident that the new Stycco Flex will deliver time saving benefits and assist contractors to complete jobs quickly and efficiently."

“Mosques are well-known for a specific set of demands that has been traditionally met by carpet, but with our introduction of this concept, there is now a more practical and no less beautiful option in an elegant contemporary interpretation,” explains Victoria Hemelaer, product manager, Leoline. “Offering a Superguard PUR treatment for protection against scuffs and marks, the underfoot comfort afforded by cushion flooring, easy maintenance for better hygiene and a durability that sees up to Class 33 Heavy Commercial performance, it provides exceptional performance married to custom style and excellent value.”

NEWS Show switches focus

The May Design Series show in London has come to an end in a re-organisation of interiors events by its organisers, UBM.

UBM eMeA Built environment, the events-led marketing services and communications company that serves the interiors, construction and commercial property communities, has announced the closure of the May Design Series event and its plans for future Uk events to provide industry targeted niche events. Responding to exhibitor and visitor feedback and their trend of successful events within niche markets, May Design Series, the multi-sector show organised by UBM since 2013, will no longer run. Relevant exhibitors will instead be offered an opportunity within kbb Birmingham or London, Sleep, Decorex or Ecobuild. They will continue to organise an annual kitchen, bedroom and bathroom exhibition alternating between Birmingham and London.

Fast food flooring

UBM EMEA Built Environment has a proven track record of running successful specialist niche events, such as Sleep, Decorex and kbb Birmingham. Decorex International, which is synonymous with luxury and internationally renowned for being THE event to discover the very best in interior decor, and Sleep, Europe’s leading event in hotel design and development, will remain as annual shows held in London.

The UK-developed Altro Stronghold 30 safety flooring and Altro Whiterock hygienic wall cladding are installed in fast food outlets in the UK, Europe and beyond for Pret a Manger, KFC and McDonalds.

Speaking about the decision to concentrate on events targeting specialist niches, Alison Jackson, Portfolio Director at UBM EMEA Built Environment, says: “We’ve decided to cancel May Design Series and put our efforts into our niche market events as our exhibitors and visitors have informed us they want a more curated experience. “In a world of information overload, our visitors need a focused event that exhibits the best and new product and thinking within that sector and takes a deep dive into the future of the sector, engaging with new ideas and trends and networking opportunities within that niche of the industry.” Over the last two years visitor numbers at Sleep have increased by 10%, while Decorex, which was relocated to Syon Park in 2014 to enable UBM to enhance the visitor experience and to accommodate more features, has experienced an 8% increase in visitors. kbb Birmingham 2014 enjoyed its largest number of exhibitors ever and Ecobuild achieved a 5% growth at its last edition at the beginning of March 2015. Now, by bringing further definition to its collection of UKbased events, UBM EMEA Built Environment is confident that it will help exhibitors make informed investment choices, focus their exhibits for the specific audience to achieve even greater return on investment for themselves and a more relevant experience for visitors. www.maydesignseries.com

Altro products have received the international seal of approval from three world-famous fast food chains.

Installed separately, or in combination as an integrated system, Altro safety flooring and wall cladding products are delivering highlyeffective protection in the kitchens of the world’s best known fast food restaurants. Durable and impact-resistant, they are tough products for tough environments. Hygiene standards and the safety of employees and customers are key priorities for fast food outlets. Kitchens in these highlypressurised restaurants need to be functional to ensure that food can be prepared quickly and efficiently, however busy the outlet may become. Flooring needs to withstand demanding, wet and greasy conditions where frequent spillage is likely, providing a hardwearing, slip-resistant surface. Wall cladding needs to be waterproof, easy to clean and impact resistant to enable employees to maintain high standards of hygiene. For Pret a Manger, Altro’s integrated flooring and walling system was the solution for outstanding performance and simplified cleaning. When KFC opened its new branch in Málaga, Altro Stronghold 30 safety flooring proved ideal for the tough demands of the kitchen area. The superior hygiene performance of Altro Whiterock wall cladding, in comparison to ceramic tiles, was the deciding factor for McDonald’s for restaurants in Helsinki, T 01462 480480

£100m+ sales success for Cormar

Sales performance at Cormar Carpets has pushed through the £100m mark for the first time despite a “difficult trading environment”. Profits have also increased by more than 20%. In their annual report covering the 12 months to September 30, 2014, the company reported a total turnover of £104.3m – up 15% on the previous year. Pre-tax profits were up by 21% over the same period to £6.9m.

The directors of the family-owned business which is registered as Greenwood & Coope, commented in their report: “The increase in sales is due to additional penetration into the market in spite of a difficult trading environment. “Profitability has improved and this allows the company to invest in new equipment and processes and to continue to launch attractive and interesting new ranges in line with current consumer tastes. We can also invest in the improvement of service to our customers. Management is keenly aware that cost improvements must also continue unabated.” Cormar, which manufactures all of its carpets in the UK, says it is going to starting looking at increasing its overseas sales. There is potential for substantial growth in this area for the company as current non-UK sales only account for less than £3m of the total turnover. www.cormarcarpets.co.uk

To ‘koboldy’ go where Hoovers have gone before!

while in Britain we have often used the brand name ‘Hoover’ to describe vacuum cleaning a carpet, europe has always talked about “kobolding” their floors – the kobold brand has been the dominant continental market leader for decades with a €1 billion turnover to prove it. While Kobold is relatively unknown in the UK, its’ parent company Vorwerk certainly is not and has a fine reputation for quality carpets and has recently launched a revolutionary organic vinyl flooring business.

Now Vorwerk’s home appliances division wants British consumers to start Kobolding their floors in a big way and independent retailers are going to be at the centre of this new crusade. While Kobold cleaners are relatively expensive, they are also remarkably exceptional in their performance and, in Europe, the company has successfully used home demonstrations of the product to overcome any resistance to the c. £750 price tag. “This is not a luxury item – it is for everyone and especially families,” says Kobold’s Eric McClenaghan. “As a German piece of engineering, it’s more like a Mercedes than a Porsche – it is well engineered and high performance, but will last a long time and is affordable for people who want a great product.” The launch machine for the UK is the Kobold VK150 cleaner and two key features set it apart. Firstly – and of key importance to retailers – it is not all over the internet already. Kobold cleaners cannot be bought online and consumers will even struggle to find a price for it. Secondly, it has a dual use performance package for carpets and smooth floors that goes well beyond the conventional vac. For carpets, the Kobold’s two motors groom and clean the carpet and can be used with a proprietary ‘dry-cleaner’ to de-grease the fibre during cleaning. “The customer will be overwhelmed by the result,” says Eric. “This machine will remove more dirt than any competitor and I know that if I take it into anyone’s home they will be impressed.” For smooth floors, the Kobold is unique in the market with an integral mop which, with a small amount of cleaning fluid, will mop and vacuum the floor in one go – you can walk on the floor almost immediately.

“It’s the obvious bolt-on business for retailers. A specialist floor cleaner from a flooring specialist with the very highest levels of customer satisfaction.” Eric McClenaghan, Kobold

Retailers are ideal as specialist advisers when consumers want to discuss floor cleaning and have the opportunity to demonstrate the machine in consumers’ homes when they are measuring up or fitting as well offering in-store demos. This extra revenue stream comes in two potential packages. Retailers can take a free machine and then receive a reduced commission on their first five sales – or they can buy the machine outright and enjoy the full commission of about £100 per machine from the start. Order fulfillment and credit arrangements offering the machine at £24.94 per month are handled by the company. 80% of consumers around the world purchase these appliances using an instalment plan of some sort “It’s the obvious bolt-on business for retailers,” says Eric. “A specialist floor cleaner from a flooring specialist with the very highest levels of customer satisfaction.” The machine can be seen in use by Hayley Leitch on Channel 4’s Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners – ‘country house rescue’ T 0333 014 3333 Eric.mcclenaghan@vorwerk.co.uk

An abundance of flooring options has resulted in consumers having the confidence to use different combinations throughout their home. This can be patterned or plain carpets, runners, hard-flooring and rugs or a combination of all these elements. Many manufacturers are making this process simpler by launching coordinating flooring ranges and offering support online to identify complimentary colours and textures. create a harmonious scheme by having the same theme running throughout a house, without having to have the same carpet. Eamonn Prescott, Sales & Marketing Manager sees a clear trend, ‘coordination of colours within the home has become more fashionable. Customers like the idea of an overall interior design look of their home, but at the same time don’t want to be limited to one carpet throughout’. Revelation from Adam Carpets offers a stripe, a tonal, a heather twist and a plain twist that coordinate with each other. This means the customer can have a stripe on a staircase, with a plain carpet to match in the hall, leading to a tonal carpet in the lounge. Upstairs can see the stripe on the stair leading to a heather twist in the bedroom. Revelation has a total of seven colour schemes from Green to Grey and Blue to Beige. All of the range is 80/20 and made at the Adam Carpets factory in Kidderminster. Building on the success of their enduring wilton designs, Victoria Carpets have developed a new range of Classic and Contemporary broadlooms, along with a collection of Hall & Stair runners. Made and hand finished in the heart of Kidderminster, Victoria recognise the emerging trend for colour and pattern. Full of energy and architecture, character and glamour, the collection reflects the art of considered design; from bold, playful stripes and sleek curves through to the punchy animal prints. Intense tones and vibrant colours sit comfortably with muted neutrals and warm contemporary greys. Available in velvet, twist, cut & loop and all loop. Emma Fletcher, National Sales Manager explains, ‘creating stylish interiors couldn’t be easier, combining and co-ordinating Victoria’s collections of Wilton, Velvet, Heather, Loop, Berber and Twist carpets along with our stylish wood and stone finishes in our luxury vinyl flooring ranges.’ Brintons pride themselves on making flooring co-ordination really simple. Many of the colours featured in the plain carpet ranges are also used in the patterns too meaning that it’s simple to create a perfect flow from one room to the next. Not only that, but many of the patterned ranges have different designs in them within one colour palette so you can easily style adjoining rooms to great effect. The Brintons residential website makes this process even easier with many of the carpet swatch pages recommending complimentary or co-ordinating carpets. Ian Motteram, Residential Sales Manager highlights, ‘if you search using the colour index feature on our residential website it shows the full range in one user-friendly colour chart. Retailers can use it to inspire customers, allowing them to select multiple room carpets from one viewing tool’. The opportunity for an extra sale or return visit are greatly increased through offering co-ordinated carpets as they

help visualise how you can work with Brintons to create a harmonious and uniform interior. Most flooring retailers now offer much greater choice, so are better placed to support their customers. Instead of looking at rooms in isolation, coordinating flooring across the home allows consumers to harmonise disparate elements and so enhance the sense of space in their home.

CRUK zero hero on hand

A retailer’s practical experience of successfully recycling carpets and carpet off-cuts, generating major savings in disposal costs, will be shared in a Carpet Recycling Uk seminar between 3pm and 4pm on Sunday September 20 at the Harrogate Flooring Show. CRUK, the industry’s association for recycling and reusing carpet, will also be exhibiting at stand M35 during the three-day event. Neville Hinchliffe, Flooring Department Manager at Arighi Bianchi and winner of the CRUK Recycling Champion member award this year, will be outlining their success in achieving zero waste to landfill by recycling both carpet off-cuts and post-consumer carpet. “ Retailers need to consider aspects such as set-up costs, storage space and current disposal costs before embarking on the ‘recycling journey’, Neville points out. “Since March when we took delivery of our baler to compact our carpet waste, we haven’t looked back. Recycling is a great story to tell to consumers!” CRUK will provide an overview of the latest developments in carpet recycling and updates on its progress towards its 60% landfill diversion target by 2020. Landfill diversion of carpets has increased from 2% to 28% over the past seven years. CRUK Director Laurance Bird commented: “Since 2008 we have made great strides in reusing and recycling all types of carpet; yet there is still much that can and has to be done. So it is vital that we engage with and encourage as many flooring suppliers as possible to come on board.”

Opera Combo is the new commercial range of 47 wood decors and 16 large tile decors, from concrete to linear, timeless solid white and black, metallic and slate looks, offering a complete palette of designs to help finish any project with that ‘perfect’ effect. RFMS cloud base

The 'cloud' is becoming available to more and more businesses. RFMS, the largest supplier of floorcovering software in the world can now offer this to Uk retailers. Earlier this year RFMS surprised the flooring community in the US and UK when they launched a free mobile version of their estimating software Measure Mobile3. The software is free to use and can cater for up to 5 plans on the device. To store more than 5 plans and/or to link the plans to the PC based version of Measure you need to buy a cloud storage plan. This might seem like a catch but a 100 plan storage contract will only cost around £134 for the year and would allow multiple ipads to run the software and feed the data back to Head Office. The PC based version of Measure can open the ipad plan, update it if required and link it back to the RFMS stock control and accounting system - the most complete and integrated flooring software available. All of this will be on display at Harrogate Hall M Stand 29/29A • T 01695 716 555 www.rfms.com

Academy syllabus of success

with a wider syllabus than ever before, including specialist courses tailored to improving product knowledge for retailers, as well as the established Master installer programme, the Academy for excellence in Flooring is now considered a leading training centre for flooring in the Uk. Specialising in wood, laminate and LVT sectors, the centre features state-of-the-art facilities for practical and theoretical development. “The Flooring Show brings together some 3,000 professionals of our industry and provides an excellent platform for us to communicate the positive work we do to raise standards right across the industry,” explains Lee Thompson of the Academy for Excellence in Flooring. “Being supported by Quick-Step, one of the most well-established household brands in flooring gives us many advantages and it’s great to spend time with fitters, retailers and contractors, explaining just how the Academy can unlock extra revenue.” One of those most famous initiatives from the academy has been the Quick-Step Master Installer scheme that provides qualified installers with a two year workmanship warranty and listing on the Quick-Step website. Kenburn first class crush

Metro Group member Carpet 1st Flooring Centre based in Chichester west Sussex recently took delivery of a kenburn “carpet crusher” for recycling their old post-consumer carpet and underlay waste. Carpet 1st have established themselves as a provider of a 1st class service for all their customers which includes the uplifting and disposal of their old carpet and underlay waste. Director Mike Coates comments, “In addition to our head office and warehouse facility in Chichester we also have two additional retail outlets as well locally so it’s inevitable we’ll regularly generate significant volumes of carpet and underlay waste”. “Having read about the numerous success stories the “carpet crusher” was establishing, we contacted Kenburn to arrange for a free of charge site survey. We were re-assured that the waste we were generating would be 100% recycled as a fuel for waste for energy and also that the collections of the compacted materials would be regular and reliable”. “An additional bonus is that the cost to recycle our old carpet and underlay waste is actually less than sending it to landfill”. ITEC Floors fusion for floors

As part of a packed programme at the hugely popular Flooring Show Demo Zones, training body FiTA, will demonstrate the innovative invisiweld installation method for commercial vinyl flooring, pioneered by itec Contract Floors. Using cold welding technology that relies on chemical fusion, rather than the heat of traditional hot welding, Invisiweld produces a far tighter and less visible seam that helps Itec’s ranges of safety, acoustic and decorative flooring retain their aesthetic integrity. FITA’s Steve Ramsden, will demonstrate that this method is not only better looking and produces a stronger end result, but that it can be faster to work with too. FITA will also highlight the important differences in working with heterogeneous vinyl constructions as used by Itec Contract Floors and more traditional homogeneous constructions employed by other manufacturers. “Heterogeneous vinyl flooring is a growing segment in the commercial flooring market, where its ability to offer diverse locations high performance flooring that also delivers stylistically is making its present felt,” says David Bigland, managing director UK. Being involved in the seminar programme, means that Itec Contract Floors will join IVC Group sister brands Avenue, Leoline and Moduleo. Hall B Stand 24 00 32 5665 3211 www.itecfloors.co.uk

Packexe edge of smartness

Following a very positive welcome back in 2014, Packexe Ltd is excited to return to The Flooring Show in 2015. There was a great response at last year’s show and the team received fantastic feedback on all products. The latest addition to the Packexe range of floor protection films, The Edge, solves the problem of how to apply protection film right to the edges of floors and surfaces or in those smaller, hard to reach areas without compromising the time saving attributes and quality protection offered by the existing Packexe products. The Edge can also be used to secure the join when laying Packexe Fleece, for extra surface protection. The Edge has all the benefits of the current Packexe products: low slip, waterproof, colour coded, easy to apply and easy to remove surface protection; but now available in 100mm wide, perforated rolls with its own unique lightweight dispenser, making application time even quicker and simpler. Woolsafe keeping it clean

After the Flooring Show’s successful rejuvenation last year, The woolSafe Organisation finds itself back in Harrogate for the eagerly anticipated 2015 edition. with a new stand location found close to the wool Trends Centre, the woolSafe team are prepared for a busy three days. 2015 has already been an exciting one for WoolSafe, with the recently introduced CleanSeal and EnviroSeal accreditation programmes going from strength to strength as the company continues to promote best practice in carpet and rug care. From product certification to education, training and the promotion of professional services, The WoolSafe Organisation endorses the wonder of wool like few others can, this year playing a bigger part in The Flooring Show than ever before with a series of displays and demonstrations. Providing support for the various wool-related shows taking place across an action-packed three day period, WoolSafe is committed to getting the message out that wool, when cared for correctly, is easy to clean and has the best appearance retention of any fibre. Through this support, the WoolSafe team will be demonstrating wool’s easy to clean nature and resistance to soiling when treated properly, qualities often overlooked when a purchasing decision is made. Too often a wool carpet’s aesthetics and feel are championed, while maintenance credentials are called into question. The WoolSafe team are looking to inform and educate to this end, showing that wool is a resistant fibre with fabulous ‘bouncebackability’ to boot. The campaign for the promotion of wool continues on the back of the good work done at last year’s Flooring Show, and with this year’s event rumoured to be the busiest in years, the ascendancy is only set to continue. Flower on Flooring

Tooling up for the best installation While most people are familiar with the old saying ‘A bad workman always blames his tools’, perhaps a better version is ‘The best craftsmen always have the right tools for the job.’

Flooring Tool Supplies, established in 2011 to meet the growing demand of online business-to-business sales, says the flooring trade was one of those that was a little slow to adapt to the new way of buying at first.

This is particularly relevant to the flooring industry, where access to the correct tools and equipment can deliver savings in both time of installation and the costs involved. Featured below are comments from suppliers including tips and advice on their specialist equipment.

"But our first four years of trading have seen impressive growth throughout the period. We are now receiving many repeat orders from floor layers who like the ease and simplicity of buying from us," says the company.

Tramex Tramex reports that its best selling line is its Flooring Inspection Kits, which come in a protective heavy-duty foam-lined carrying case, including the CMEX II digital concrete moisture meter for instant and non-destructive testing of concrete and other floor screeds. The reusable Hygro-i Relative Humidity probes for testing relative humidity, temperature and dew point in the environment, or performing in situ and hood tests of concrete slabs to international standards BS 8201, 8203, 5325 and ASTM F2170. Heavy-duty pinprobes also allow the user to measure wood moisture content while an infrared surface thermometer and calibration unit to check salts are included in the Flooring Inspection Kit. Installers can be sure the concrete floor has reached sufficient dryness to accept adhesives, resilient floor coverings and hardwood flooring and identify moisture related problems to determine when sealants are required. Wagner Meters also provides its WFP400 Professional Flooring Installer Package for installers who require accurate wood and concrete moisture measurement testing capabilities. This package includes the company's best-selling MMC220 non-damaging wood moisture meter, Rapid RH Starter Kit, five Rapid RH 4.0 EX Smart Sensors, Easy Reader with Touch-n-Sense Technology, insertion tool, 10 extensions, five orange protective caps, five stainless steel covers, ¾in SDS masonry drill bit, wire cleaning brush, vacuum attachment, Rapid RH DataMaster with Bluetooth reader, infrared (IR) thermometer and TH-200 Thermo-Hygrometer in a convenient foam-lined carry case.

Clients can now order online in safety and choose the place and day of delivery. "The feedback we receive tells us that this saves them both time and money Flooring Tool Supplies website whilst providing a greater choice. There is no doubt that online business will continue to grow and flooring trade sales can only follow," the company concludes.

“Accepted by many installers the Stanley knife and derivatives have become the traditional tool of the carpet fitter and the reason Merryfield has included this simple tool as basis of the cutting system in its machines.”

The company states the easy-to-use technology of the MMC220 and the Rapid RH Touch-n-Sense Easy Reader make monitoring moisture content simpler or more reliable. It further explains the Rapid RH DataMaster is also designed to protect data integrity for easy reporting and analysis on each concrete job site. Merryfield Carpet Machinery offers a full range of carpet cut length machines for most flooring products. Whilst these modern and technically advanced machines take out the heavy labour associated with carpet selection and despatch, the company says this cannot replace the accuracy and skill of a final fix carpet fitter. Accepted by many installers the Stanley knife and derivatives have become the traditional tool of the carpet fitter and the reason Merryfield has included this simple tool as basis of the cutting system in its machines. “To achieve accurate and square cross cuts on all Merryfield machines we simply mount a pair of Stanley knife blades in a steel quick change cutting cassette. This fast and extremely cheap cutting system out shines the expensive, rotary knife blades often used by our competitors,” the company states.

NEWS wood that could

itec Contract Floors has introduced three new decors into its Concept woods collection for 2015, delivering on-trend wood looks for commercial interiors.

Joining the range for 2015 comes the white-washed oak of Toronto, the darkened weathered effect of Tavel and the bamboo like Bolivia in a charcoal grey look. As with the entire Concept Woods collection, each design is available in two and four-metre width options, the latter proving increasingly popular, as David Bigland, managing director UK, explains: “We’ve seen a dramatic rise in the volume of four-metre wide rolls across the UK, indicating that contractors and specifiers are seeing the benefits that the width can bring to commercial vinyl installations. It is also indicative of increasing use in larger spaces often associated with front of house applications, pointing towards more environments utilising the performance benefits of vinyl from Itec because of the excellent aesthetics.” Featuring Hyperguard+ for scuff and dirt protection along with reduced maintenance, Concept Woods is rated Class 34 Very Heavy Commercial and is rated BRE A+ for health and retail environments. Stocked through the Headlam distributor network right across the UK as part of the Commercial Flooring Collection, the range is part of a simplified product line-up for 2015 as Itec Contract Floors looks set to improve supply to contractors across the UK. Bacon butty brigade

Recofloor’s ‘Bacon Butty’ events have offered opportunities to find out more about the Uk’s award-winning vinyl flooring recycling scheme while enjoying welcome refreshments.

Roadshows have taken place in Ireland in Dublin and Limerick and in Chelmsford, Bristol and Aberdeen. Customers are invited to drop in, pick up their free bacon butty and learn more about how Recofloor’s services can enhance their businesses.

Antron invests in awards

inViSTA Antron carpet fibre has supported the Carpet Recycling Uk 2015 Annual Conference and Awards, held at the institute of engineering and Technology, Birmingham, as the not for profit organisation looks to divert more of the 400,000 tonnes of carpet sent to landfill in the Uk every year.

As the main sponsor of the event, INVISTA Antron carpet fibre helped to ensure that Carpet Recycling UK members, including leading manufacturers and recycling companies, enjoyed a packed agenda of seminars, including workshops on reuse and recycling, successful models in the US and the principle of the circular economy. Running over two days, 10-11th June, the conference include speakers such as Russell Owens of the Welsh Government, Anthony Cline, CARE; Sean Ragiel, CarpetCycle LLC; Vanessa Brady, SBID; Ken Webster, Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Neville Hinchliffe, Arigi Bianchi. The conference also saw the annual Awards Dinner, celebrating the efforts of member companies and individuals in their efforts to improve on the 28% diversion rate recorded in 2014. Recycler of the Year; Reuse Member of the Year, Take Back Partner of the Year and Recycling Champion were all announced at the dinner. With an ambition to divert 60% of carpet waste sent to landfill by 2020, Carpet Recycling UK is the leading body in the country and has pioneered good sustainable practice within the carpet industry since it was established in 2008. Starting off with six specialist carpet reuse, recycling and energy recovery outlets, the organisation now boasts 20 and in 2014 saw 1.2million carpet tiles collected and diverted from landfill into reuse, recycling or energy recovery. Benefits for 650-plus collectors across the UK include a sustainable option for end-of-life flooring, enhanced green credentials and up to 75% savings in disposal costs. Starter packs that include material specification, collection bags, a brochure and Certificate of Commitment will be provided for those interested in signing up to the scheme. Recofloor’s Project Officer Carla Eslava comments: “Our Bacon Butty roadshows are invariably popular and create a bit of a buzz around distributors’ premises. “This time we have chosen new locations so we can spread the message to even more people. We’re looking forward to meeting new flooring contractors and fitters and explaining how easy it is to recycle waste vinyl flooring through Recofloor. ” Founded by leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro in 2009 to divert waste material from landfill, Recofloor has 63 drop-off sites throughout the UK and Ireland at flooring distributors accepting post installation vinyl Recofloor 2015 Bacon Butty event, Dublin flooring off-cuts and uplifted vinyl flooring. To date, more than 2,300 tonnes of vinyl flooring waste has been diverted from landfill through Recofloor and recycled back into new flooring or traffic management products such as cones and sign bases. READERS’ SURVEY

Can wool bounce back? Retailers need to be bolder in up-selling says our survey As the new Wool Carpet Focus Group is launched to reverse the slide in wool sales, the challenge they face is set out clearly in the response to our latest survey. 64% of retailers think British consumers still prefer a wool carpet if they can afford it - but at the same time, 67% said they found synthetic easier to sell. In terms of what retailers felt were the strongest selling points of wool, appearance retention came out top with 35% of the vote but the natural, environmental credentials of wool also scored highly, coming second in the list of benefits. ‘Bouncebackability’ came third and flame retardency came sixth and last. But in terms of obstacles to selling more wool, price came top by a mile with 60% citing this as the biggest issue. “The price of wool is the killer,” says a North East retailer. “You can get the same look with PP, so even though the natural argument is there, it boils down to price.” But a Norfolk retailer disagrees: “Not everyone is looking for cheap carpet so retailers should be bolder and aim to promote better quality when speaking to consumers.” Another respondent in the West Country added: “The biggest problem is the retailer who 'sells down' to polypropylene carpets to gain a competitive price advantage, rather than upselling the advantages of wool.” Cleanability – a key issue in the new wool campaign – came up as the second biggest problem that retailers encountered in selling wool – showing the need for greater awareness of how well wool responds to cleaning. By contrast, we asked how strong the ‘bleach cleanable’ claim was when selling synthetic fibre and 68% said this was either a ‘good’ or ‘great’ selling point. “The public has been brainwashed into buying PP,” says a Nottinghamshire reader. “This does not and never will perform like wool. It’s all about price and affordability.” Consumers are more ‘fibre aware’ than you might think. 40% of our retailers said that more than a third of their customers asked about fibre specifically when they came into the store – another 27% said that at least a quarter of visitors asked. Though price came top of the obstacles in selling wool, a whopping 76% of our respondents said they were confident they could give consumers good reasons to pay the higher price. But 60% said they did not have enough information about wool benefits and 88% said wool had not been promoted strongly enough compared to PP. Wool needs to up its game according to a Dorset reader: “Literature on wool samples is poor compared to synthetics. Its outdated and does not give the consumer the full benefits of wool ranges.” “Wool has always tended to rest on its laurels whilst the producers of man made yarns are relentless in spending vast amounts of money on the marketing,” said a Welsh retailer. Opinion was almost evenly divided on why wool has lost market share in the last few years. Suprisingly, price came third in the ranking of these key issues. Better promotion of PP was the second reason given but retailers said the improved feel and performance of the new synthetics was the strongest reason.

We slipped in a question about moths problems which appears to be rising as an issue in wool carpets and 52% agreed that it was and many commented on the need for moth proofing and labeling. What’s the future for wool? While 70% of retailers say they are selling less wool than they were 10 years ago, 62% expect to sell more wool in the next year or so.

Flooring Factsheet Adhesives

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and new Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British wool and new Zealand wool because British wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst new Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 61

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.interfloor.com

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. www.interfloor.com

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 66

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS August 2015

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Tip Sheared

Tufted with advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. it takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
