Furlong Flooring. First choice flooring for every room.
YOUR RELIABLE PARTNER FOR PENT-UP DEMAND Dear customer First, we hope that everyone is keeping safe in these most difficult of times. At Furlong Flooring our number one priority is to practice government guidelines and even though retail is due to open on the 12th of April, we will continue to do everything in our power to ensure the safety of our customers and staff that must be our number one priority. Like everyone, we cannot wait for retail to re-open and we have been extremely busy behind the scenes during this lockdown period. Our UK factory has continued to manufacture all our products and we are building up as much stock as possible to meet the pent-up demand that the experts are predicting. We have restructured our sales team so that your local representative is now responsible for not only the Regency carpet offer but our Laminate, LVT and Hard Flooring as well. We have new ranges to present to you across all product sectors. We have been busy updating our display offer to cover all the product sectors we now sell. We have upgraded our online portal where 24/7 online ordering is now available, and most aspects of your account can be managed online. Please ask your local representative for details of how to register. Our new mission statement “First choice flooring for every room” is on all our new POS and we feel it reflects our new market position. We know you have a choice where to place your business and we want to earn the right by being “Your Supplier of Choice”. Please talk to our team who are ready to take your call and whose contact details are on the page opposite. Welcome back! Yours sincerely The Furlong Flooring Team

50% faster floors Found on BerryAlloc’s Pure and Style vinyl collections, DreamClick’s innovative 360° locking system is up to 50% faster to install than other click systems. The four-sided system is not only faster, but more versatile too so that DreamClick equipped floors can be installed in almost any laying pattern you can imagine. Whether an adventurous combination of stone tiles and wood planks, stylish herringbone, basket or classic brick, DreamClick floors are simpler to install for any professional or DIY enthusiast. Scott Arundell, regional sales director, BerryAlloc, explains: “DreamClick makes it so much easier to install floors. Offering faster installation and more flexibility, it’s a winning combination that retailers will love for the simplicity and homeowners will adore for the creativity.” DreamClick can be found on BerryAlloc’s revamped Pure and brand-new Style. Made in Belgium, these viny floors feature the manufacturer’s RCB (Rigid Composite Board) construction. This patented foamed core structure has the rigidity to be installed over almost all subfloors with little or no preparation, while remaining up to 30% lighter than conventional LVT floors. Pure’s range of 35 striking wood effects and 13 tiles, including terrazzo and urban stone, provides an impressive choice from which to build a unique and personal floor. So, whether mixing it up or keeping it strictly all-over, homeowners are sure to find a dazzling look with premium performance and simple maintenance. Again, the floor delivers great performance and easy maintenance. Both Pure and Style are equipped with BerryAlloc’s lifetime residential warranty and can be used in commercial locations thanks to a 0.55mm wear layer and 10-year warranty. FLOORINGNEWS Beat the rush with cush As the UK begins to open up, 95% mortgages become available and the stamp duty break continues, the housing market is set to be a key part of the economy’s recovery. Along with pent-up demand from almost a full quarter of closure, the next months are expected to see brisk trading with pressure on retailers and installers to get the job done. Leoline’s Comfytex Deluxe is perfect for time-pressured retailers and owners looking to quickly refurbish a room as they make their plans for moving home. Of course, it’s a great option for rental properties and landlords too. Thanks to its textile back, Comfytex Deluxe can be installed over a wide range of floors: old ceramic tiles, wooden boards and thermoplastic tiles can be given an instant transformation. And as a loose lay floor that’s ready for all but the very largest of rooms, Comfytex Deluxe can simply be laid flat and cut to fit. With two, three and four-metre widths, the floor also keeps waste to a minimum. The floor is available in a wide range of wood effects, including the popular Sintra herringbone, stone tiles and the geometric tile of Magali. Each floor has a textured Natural Look and Feel surface, finished with Leoline’s Superguard PUR for better stain-resistance and easy cleaning. Comfytex Deluxe also features Protekt permanent antibacterial protection for a surface that’s more hygienic and also inhibits mould growth. Stuart Reeves, sales director UK, comments: “We’ve seen a big lift in sample requests through the website since the start of the year, so we’re expecting there to be a rush that retailers will need to be equipped to cope with. Comfytex Deluxe is designed as a fast installation cushion vinyl that doesn’t compromise on style or performance, so it’s a great floor to recommend. It will save installers time and that means better service for customers.” T 0800 032 3970 www.leoline.co.uk
The badge of business benefits Completing the Quick-Step Master Installer programme at the Academy for Excellence in Flooring helps installers to unlock a range of business benefits. As the only Quick-Step approved installers, holding the prestigious Master Installer card are able to enjoy a range of exclusive business benefits, most notably a manufacturer-backed lifetime warranty on workmanship. Alongside, all Master Installers feature on the Quick-Step website, which received more than 14,000 searches for installers alone. And as more and more consumers become accustomed to online shopping but want expert installation, this number is likely to increase. Lee Thompson of the Academy says: “Undoubtedly, the lifetime workmanship warranty is a big reason for consumers to select a Master Installer to fit their new Quick-Step wood, laminate or LVT floor. Being listed on the Quick-Step website, which received over 100,000 stockist enquiries in 2020 alone, is a big reason to become a Master Installer.” Alongside the website listing, Master Installers are also given access to the Quick-Step stockist database within their area, allowing them to build links with any of the brand’s outlets listed on the website and forming valuable relationships that can provide a regular flow of work. Membership to the scheme also includes a free technical helpline, marketing packs, ID card, clothing, quotation guidance and warranty forms.

FLOORINGNEWS Modus modern heritage Louis de Poortere’s stunning rework of a heritage design from its pattern library, Antiquarian Bakhtiari, has been chosen by award-winning design and build firm Modus Workspace, for the communal area of a London office. Cain International is a real estate investment company with offices in London, New York and Beverly Hills. Modus Workspace was commissioned to design a new interior for the company’s Upper Street, London offices and developed a scheme with a residential feel. The company turned to Louis de Poortere’s Antiquarian Bakhtiari rug to add a layer of comfort and warmth in the relaxed seating area within the communal area. Working on top of a wood effect vinyl floor, the rug features in the Galata pattern. Ali Mackechnie, project designer at Modus Workspace, says: “The vintage pattern and colours of Antiquarian Bakhtiari added a layer of warmth to achieve a more residential look, adding to the modern heritage feeling we were trying to capture.”

FLOORINGBUSINESSNEWS Price rises dominate retail re-opening
BGNFS buying group show postponed
Retailers and wholesalers are responding to a rapid increase in pricing updates from manufacturers and importers as stores prepare to re-open with average increases of 3 to 10%.
The popular buying group show at Solihull scheduled for May 18 and 19 has had to be postponed this year due to ongoing uncertainties around Covid-19.
One major buyer for a group of stores told The Stocklists he was “swamped” with messages about price changes and delivery delays. “It’s getting increasingly difficult to keep up with it all and the signs are that these issues will go on all Summer,” he said. “It’s right across the board.”
The Buying Group National Flooring Show, which is seen as an important exhibition for retailers and suppliers, will return in May 2022.
Fibre costs for man-made carpet are approaching a six-year high as UK and European manufacturers struggle to secure supplies – polypropylene prices have already risen 25% since December. For some fibre types, prices have doubled against last year’s average and manufacturers are already passing on the extra costs to retailers in multiple price increases. The situation is forecast to persist into Q3 according to analysts. The polypropylene market has been rocked by a whole series of issues including shipping container problems, US export shortages due to extreme weather there and a rising oil price – just as pent-up demand is driving up orders and manufacturers compete to get supplies in early ahead of the rush. Many of the same logistics issues, including Covid and Brexit disruption to imports is affecting vinyl, LVT, underlay and accessories. Retailers are advised to pass on the prices – and more – as we reported last month. “Consumers are already braced for inflation across all sectors so flooring retailers should be confident about increasing prices and improving their margins while this climate exists and while consumers have disposable income to spend,” says Linda Thomas of buying group SMG. In a survey in The Stocklists in February, 81% of our retailers said they planned to increase prices this year.
Headlam plans network of 90 trade counters An enlarged network of 90 Headlam trade counters across the country will give retailers and installers click-and-collect access to flooring and reduce logistics issues and costs. Headlam is the UK’s largest flooring distributor and the success of its current 53 trade counters during the pandemic have prompted the company to expand the network by over 50%. By the end of 2021, 10 new sites will have been added and a network of up to 90 sites is expected by 2025. Headlam CEO Steve Wilson said: “The Company has an established trade counter network of 53 UK sites, which have been particularly beneficial since the impact of COVID-19 and able to support the increased need and preference for ‘click and collect’. “The format, established following customer insight work, will broaden the offering to all trade customers with flooring needs, and supports the Company’s strategic aim of broadening its customer base,” he said. According to the latest filed accounts, the Headlam Group recovered from a 30% crash in flooring sales in the first half of 2020 to turn a loss of £1.2m in those 6 months into a final profit of £15.9m for the year overall, following “exceptional performance from the UK residential sector.” Following that 30% sales hit in the first half of 2020, Headlam ended the year with annual trading levels 15% below those of 2019. 30
The joint event, supported by the Flooring One, BRM, Metro, Greendale and SMG buying groups regularly attracts hundreds of retail members and 60 leading flooring brands who exhibit at the event. Opportunities to delay the two-day show were explored but the lack of certainty and the issue of later dates running into the summer holidays has forced the organisers to postpone.
Big order book boosts ScS “record performance” Flooring and furniture retailer ScS has reported a record performance for the last six months to January 23rd with sales up 14%, and online sales powering ahead 160%. The group, which has 100 UK stores, said the success was “driven by the delivery of the large opening order book from pent up demand in June and July 2020, coupled with strong order growth.” In the ScS interim results for the 26 weeks ended 23 January 2021, the group said revenues were up 14.4% to £173.9m and profits before tax were £17.7m – a major turnaround from the same period last year which reported a small loss of £0.6m. Despite store closures throughout the autumn and key winter sales period, like-for-like order intake for the 26 weeks ended 23 January 2021 was only down 9.1%, said the company. Budget support as retailers await April 12 re-opening The re-opening of non-essential retail in England and Wales remains on track for April 12 but is subject to a review at Easter. Scotland could open on Easter Monday. Hopes of an earlier re-opening in Wales on March 15 were dashed when the country’s authorities u-turned on the issue and only hardressers were allowed to open on that date. Homeware stores in Scotland can open on April 1 and Northern Ireland current lockdown extends to April 1. Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s budget on March 3 confirmed that the business rates holiday will be extended through to the end of June and that a new Restart Grant in will go live in April, “to help businesses reopen and get going again”. The block on evictions will continue until 30 June, compared to the previous cut off date of 31 March. More details at www.thestocklists.com
Domotex all set for digital days in May Domotex is looking forward to its debut as a digital event and has added two more days following a positive response from the flooring industry. Domotex Digital Days 2021 was launched after the cancellation of January’s annual event in Hannover, the world’s biggest carpet fair. Now, the Digital Conference planned for May will be extended by two days so the full event is now May 19–21. The live conference programme takes place on May 20, which will address current and trendsetting topics in the international floor coverings industry. The live programme is framed by two days of business dating, networking and exchange for participants. FLOORINGNEWS Growing together with BerryAlloc BerryAlloc wins 2020 “supplier of the year” award from Nordic company Optimera Menen, Belgium, 22 February 2021. BerryAlloc was awarded the 2020 “supplier of the year” award out of all nominated Optimera suppliers, proving the strong relationship and close collaboration between the two companies. This took place during Optimera’s annual, corona-safe Opptur event. Over the past years, BerryAlloc has worked closely with Optimera as a floor supplier for the construction department. This partnership fostered significant growth for both companies: “BerryAlloc has a clear market profile and works closely together with our organisation. The company is particularly good at following up with our different stores and working purposefully with our sales team,” Pål Erichsen, Category Director at Optimera, elaborates. Criteria behind the Optimera “supplier of the year” award consisted of the following elements: nurturing a close collaboration and good relationship with the company; proving significant growth; remaining flexible and positive; and having a solution-oriented mentality. Other influential factors included having a strong sustainability policy and a digital mindset.
Academic adhesive High performance products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd., including Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier, have been used by iFlor Flooring Contractors LLP to install a bright combination of grey, pink and blue Paragon and Balsan carpet tiles in the sixth form study room at The Charter School in North Dulwich, London, helping to create an inspiring learning environment for school students. As well as adding a splash of colour to the school’s sixth form study room, iFlor was commissioned to install Forbo vinyl sheet in a number of classrooms, using Stopgap 700 Superflex levelling compound and Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive adhesive. Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier is designed to provide a permanently tacky film that prevents loose lay carpet tiles from moving laterally, but still allows for individual tiles to be lifted and replaced with ease, should they become damaged or worn. In five of the school’s classrooms, Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive adhesive was used to install grey vinyl sheet. The solvent free acrylic adhesive is designed to give strong initial tack and a high bond strength that dries to a permanent tacky film. Further, it also reduces the incidence of trowel serrations shadowing through thin vinyl flooring.
Pål Erichsen - Category Director at Optimera (left), and Jan Lien - Sales Director Nordic Upon hearing the news, Philippe Dehedin, General Manager BerryAlloc, stated the following: “This award is a sign of our team’s constant dedication to the service for our customers and partners – close collaboration, flexibility, and a solution-oriented approach all lead to common growth.”
The classrooms’ raised access panel subfloors were first primed using a general purpose primer, before being smoothed using Stopgap 700 Superflex levelling compound. Stopgap 700 Superflex is a fast drying, self-levelling, fibre-reinforced levelling compound suitable for use over flexible subfloors prior to the installation of new floorcoverings.
Jan Lien, Sales Director Nordic for BerryAlloc, had the honour of collecting the award from Pål Erichsen at the Optimera headquarters on 17 February 2021.
Once the levelling compound had cured, the job was completed with the installation of the Forbo sheet vinyl, ready for students to begin learning again.
“We are extremely honoured to have received this award,” says Jan Lien, Sales Director Nordic for BerryAlloc. “This signifies a good start to 2021, with one of our most important customers.”
Adam Couch of iFlor said: “F. Ball products have played a significant role in completing a successful installation. They can be trusted to provide the high standard of results needed.”

WATER-RESISTANT FLOORS FOR MOMENTS OF JOY BerryAlloc has launched Ocean+, its latest collection in laminate flooring to continue the legacy of its pioneering hydro+ technology. BerryAlloc brought hydro+ to the market way back in 2008, making the company a pioneer in 100% water-resistant laminate. Ocean+ is the latest laminate collection to take advantage of the hydro+ technology, making this an easy-maintenance floor for general residential and commercial use. 100% WATER RESISTANCE GUARANTEED SINCE 2008 Hydro+ is a hydrophobic coating that BerryAlloc applies to all sides of the plank during the laminate manufacturing process. Repelling water away from joints and combined with a secure locking system, hydro+ makes Ocean+ completely water resistant as soon as it leaves the factory. With a track record of 13 years, hydro+ has indisputably proven its technology for more than a decade of daily exposure to water. BerryAlloc also ensures the integrity of hydro+ with additional accessories to be used when installing Ocean+ for a complete finish.
Impressively natural, matt wood and lifelike stone designs
Ocean+, Gyant light
PREMIUM QUALITY FLOORS FOR RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL USE
REALISTIC WOOD DESIGNS The Ocean+ collection features impressively natural, matt wood and lifelike stone designs, offering a choice of modern and classic styles This includes the exclusive and extremely detailed Gyant design, but also the unique Retro Chic mimicking Portuguese tiling. The highlight here is the real wood structure with a matt finish, of which the natural aspect is barely discernible from the look and feel of real wood. The collection also boasts a number of designs with a deep wood structure, an ultra-deep embossed texture and super-matt finish that brings the knots and cracks of grain patterns to life for a true recreation of nature. In more classic wood looks, BerryAlloc turns to its wood structure, a great all-purpose choice.
The collection consists of four different formats: • O cean 8 V4: a versatile 8-mm thick laminate floor with a standard plank size of 190 mm x 1288 mm. All 30 decors are available in this format with a residential abrasion class level of 23, and 32 for commercial use. • O cean 8 XL: an XL format with a plank size of 241 mm x 2038 mm and 8-mm thickness. 10 natural wood decors are available in this format with a residential abrasion class level of 23, and 32 for commercial use. • O cean 12 V4: a standard size (190 mm x 1288 mm) format with a 12-mm plank thickness. 10 natural wood decors are available in this format with a residential abrasion class level of 23, and 33 for commercial use. • O cean 12 XL: an XL format with a plank size of 241 mm x 2038 mm and 12-mm thickness. 10 natural wood decors are available in this format with a residential abrasion class level of 23, and 33 for commercial use. EASY TO INSTALL Ocean 8 V4 makes use of BerryAlloc’s DuoLoc locking system, a proven click install system that delivers excellent strength and a strong seal to maintain the integrity of its hydro+ water resistant technology. Ocean 8 XL, Ocean 12 V4, and Ocean 12 XL are all equipped with a combination of DuoLoc on the long edge and 5G on the short edge, a useful combination for longer planks. With the compatible Excellence Plus underlay, BerryAlloc ensures that every Ocean+ floor can quieten impact sound by 21dB, helping to create a more comfortable atmosphere in a multiple-story property.
Ocean+ 100% water-resistant laminate FOR MODERN LIFE Ocean+ is suitable for all areas within a household. Not only your standard bedroom; living, and office area, but also hallways, kitchens and bathrooms. Maintaining Ocean+ is no different than any other BerryAlloc laminate floor. A tough and highly scratch-resistant surface fights off the signs of daily life. All collections share a residential class abrasion level of 23, giving it a lifetime warranty for residential use. But it’s also more than suitable for commercial use: Ocean 8 V4 and Ocean 8 XL have a commercial abrasion class of level 32, giving it 5 years warranty. Ocean 12 V4 and Ocean 12 XL meet the standards of class 33, with a higher abrasion level. This provides a warranty of 6 years. Additionally, our laminate floors boast a high dimensional stability due to our extremely strong DuoLoc click system and a solid HDF core. It is this easy-going nature that makes Ocean+ such a joy to live with. Water-resistant, stable, fadefree, scratch-resistant, beautiful to look at and simple to look after, it ticks all the boxes of a floor made for modern life. T +32 56 52 84 80 www.berryalloc.com

FLOORING FOCUS
Digital developments The pandemic has driven digital innovation across all sectors of the flooring industry, creating lasting benefits for the trade. While retailers have been enjoying success with video appointments, for example, suppliers have been busy with a range of smart initiatives. A great example comes from Harvey Maria with their unique Local Online Sales Commission. The LVT company is really passionate about driving more consumers to local retailers, using both offline and online innovations. “We have been using these last few months to refine our processes behind the scenes and refresh our systems, so we can provide our retailers with lots more support,” says marketing manager Lucy Tunstall. “We are excited to have just launched a unique initiative which means newly signed Harvey Maria retailers can enjoy a share of online sales with our Local Online Sales Commission.” This approach was designed specifically to combat the challenges faced by UK retailers on local high streets and means that they now get a share of Harvey Maria’s online sales.
“The Local Online Sales Commission is a really unique way of supporting local business and traditional retail.” “We pay them a percentage of the invoice value on consumer orders received at harveymaria.com for delivery within the retailer’s territory,” says Lucy “This is not only on their displayed collections, but we will also offer a percentage on all other collections to the Harvey Maria Approved Retailer closest to the order shipping address. “We think that this is a really unique way of supporting local business and traditional retail, which is extremely important within our industry.” Harvey Maria is also updating the find-a-retailer function on its website and building its social media activity to enhance referrals to retailers. And the company only offers its promotions and discounts to its retailers, not third-party websites. Initiated in response to Covid restrictions, F. Ball and Co. Ltd. is offering virtual site visits facilitated by video-messaging apps, such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Zoom, allowing contractors using F. Ball products to receive an on-the-spot site assessment and advice on the best course of action for specific flooring projects from an F. Ball Technical Service Officer. Enquiries can also be made through the company’s social media channels and by email and telephone.
F Ball uses virtual site visits to support installers The Academy for Excellence in Flooring has a proven track record of providing highly successful training sessions that have helped service and sales teams to gain knowledge, build confidence and improve customer experience, operating from its Manchester-based facility as well as on-site programmes. With the impact of Covid-19, the Academy has moved its on-site learning activity to digital platforms, delivering the same highlevel of content within the confines of current working practices and accelerating its digital innovation. Lee Thompson, technical and procurement manager at The Academy said: “The pandemic has forced everyone to adopt new working practices and discover ways of collaborating and it’s been no different here. We’ve worked to translate our teams-based training programmes, which traditionally took place at our training facility or head offices, into effective digital sessions that can be rolled out nationwide to remote teams.”
“The pandemic has forced everyone to adopt new working practices and discover ways of collaborating.” Over 190 employees of one of the country’s largest kitchen suppliers joined in the Academy for Excellence in Flooring’s virtual product and technical training sessions from all over the UK, demonstrating the reach and worth of online training. The programme for the supplier involved a series of sessions across LVT and water-resistant laminate floors, delivering a mix of product and technical knowledge. Taking place in group sessions over two days, it allowed depots to involve different employees as availabile, boosting the effectiveness of centralised training.
F. Ball’s industry-acclaimed Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG) is accessible online and via a mobile app, which is free to download from the Apple App store or Google Play. The guide lists the compatibility of the company’s adhesives with over 6,000 floorcoverings from more than 200 manufacturers. Retailers and manufacturers can also subscribe to F-Talk, the e-newsletter for F. Ball’s Ball Rewards loyalty scheme members, for free to receive company news, including product launches and promotions, such as regular cashback on purchases of F. Ball products. The website of F. Ball is the first touchpoint for most people requiring information about the company’s products and how to use them. It features product data sheets, videos demonstrating their application and guides to subfloor preparation and floorcovering installation. 44
The Academy for Excellence in Flooring has tranformed online training A challenge over the last several months has been not only to to survive, but grow. “Business needs more customers and to keep ahead of your competitors, you must offer a better service,” says Stuart Hunt, technical director of software specialist Company Dynamics. “One of the best ways to do this is with a digital sales and marketing presence, both in-store and on-line, he says. Having your own customer portal brings much more to your business than a brochure website or simple eCommerce package and a professional looking, custom designed portal provides an excellent online sales and marketing platform. It gives you the ability to promote your company and showcase your products and services, in an attractive way. FLOORINGAWARDS Get set to star in 2021 The 2021 awards are looking for the new products and innovations that will boost the bounce-back and encourage consumers to invest in their homes. “The last months have been an incredibly challengiing period for manufacturers and a lot of effort and initiative has gone in to keep the flooring supply chain working, Manufacturers, suppliers and retailers have really risen to the challenge,” said Flooring Innovation Awards organiser Bridgette Kelly. “A lot of product development has been held back by the pandemic but we know there are a lot of new ranges and ideas waiting in the wings and we hear consumers are more than ready to spend on flooring,” she said “So we want to hear about the best investments for that pent-up demand and the new innovations that are planned for 2021 so that they can get the recognition they deserve in these prestigious awards,” said Bridgette.
New and exceptional The National Flooring Innovation Awards sets out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional in the sector. Award categories cover not only flooring products, but also recognise achievements in service, technology and marketing. Last year there were more than 100 submissions to the award scheme despite the challenges of Covid-19 and 34 shortlisted entries received the coveted Innovation Star. The judges then went on to select the Innovation Gold in each of 10 categories to receive the ultimate award. The awards scheme website is at www.flooringinnovationawards.com and gives full details of all the categories for 2021 and has an entry form for companies to make their first submissions to the judges. The award winners will be announced in August, with the exceptional Innovation Gold titles to be handed out at Harrogate in September.

A great initiative for the carpet sector is that WoolSafe have tested and approved several sanitisers that not only kill SARS CoV-2 (the virus that causes Covid-19) but are also safe for use on interior textiles and carpet. These products can be found in the online WoolSafe Booklet – Support and Guidance for Trading Safely During SARS CoV-2 or on the WoolSafe website product search facility. WoolSafe hosted Zoom meeting presentations for the sales and customer service staff of WoolSafe Associate Carpet Manufacturers. The recordings are also being used to train new staff and to inform them of the many benefits of easy-clean wool carpet. The Woolsafe website and its app has step-by-step carpet care advice.

BUYING GROUP FOCUS
Sign up for the Metro makeover Every business is first and foremost a marketing business – it’s only what you sell that varies. The Metro Group has majored on marketing for its members, making retailer’s consumer appeal as attractive as possible to boost their competitive advantage. A professional presentation builds customer confidence and loyalty, and commands better margins. The Metro Group and its Carpet 1st brand makes it easy to look the part alongside the benefit of group buying discounts from leading suppliers, own label protection and professional services. The group has a very open approach to serving its membership of 150 retail outlets. There are no contracts and no complex rebates, just an annual subscription for which members get access to competitively negotiated prices across some 30 suppliers. “The group was started by retailers more than 40 years ago,” says operations manager Steve Depport, “and it’s still run by retailers today in very much the same ethos of serving the retailers’ best interest, with no restrictions and 100% independence – members are free to deal with whoever they wish.” Metro is run by a board of four retail members who are elected at the AGM to serve a two-year term. Ray Chilton of Carpet Style in Nottingham is the chairman at present. Membership costs £1,200 as an annual subscription. The fee is usually quickly recouped in supplier discounts but the group’s key offer is that members get £500 back (£600 for new members) to spend towards display, merchandising and marketing services. Those award-winning services, backed by a professional creative design agency, are provided at cost so their value is even greater. “We can cover everything from a shopfront to a business card, merchandising and display to your web presence and social media content,” says Steve, who has an impressive 26-page brochure of marketing services to prove it. Sq M
“ The right thing for retailers is
to join a buying group – the real decision is which one,” says Steve. “Metro can give retailers a makeover while maintaining their independence and boosting their buying power. It all adds up to better business.”
“More and more retailers are making use of this service. They find it generates more sales and the annual allowance means they can sustain that momentum to build their business long term,” he says. Own-label advantage Retailers can use the allowance to enhance their own name and reputation or buy into Metro’s popular Carpet1st own label branding. Or both! The own label proposition has become increasingly important to retailers to protect their margins against competition, price comparison and online retailers. 90% of the group’s product portfolio can be presented this way – either in the retailer’s own brand or as Carpet 1st. Many retailers use a mix in their stores – creating a varied visual environment of leading supplier brands, store specials and Carpet 1st ranges while some members use the Carpet 1st brand exclusively, right through to their shopfront signage and business identity. The Metro Group merchandising approach covers signage, window display, posters, banners and stickers, vehicle livery and business stationery as well as a full suite of professional point of sale displays and ticketing.

BUYING GROUP FOCUS
Sharpening the competitive edge SMG is one of the most dynamic buying groups in the flooring sector, priding itself on a rapid response to trends and market conditions to give its retailer members maximum advantage in the marketplace. As the UK’s largest group – 350 retailers operating from over 435 outlets – SMG has well-developed offers on preferential pricing, rebates, promotions, business support and own label protection but they aim to add much more. “We’re always looking at ways to sharpen the competitive edge of our members and give their businesses a distinctive advantage,” says Mike Reed, head of group operations. “We already offer the lowest fees in the buying group sector so membership is great value for money. But we’re focussed on what’s next and how to deliver it swiftly and profitably for our retailers.”
“ We find the SMG Group invaluable to our business. A major plus has been increased profits from member’s preferential rates and rebates, and suppliers’ benefits for things like card machines and employment advice. The range of services with SMG is so wide ranging and perfectly supports small businesses like ours. We wouldn’t be without SMG, worth every penny of our membership.” Helen Wilson, Charles Wilson Carpets, Hitchin
Linda Thomas is SMG’s business and marketing manager: “We’re very proactive about bringing forward new ideas, whether it is spotting the next mainstream best-seller, introducing a niche product or exploring new opportunities for upselling or diversification.” Two key examples of this enlightened approach at SMG are its unique Orderlink system and its “Pure” branding approach to own label. Orderlink sets SMG apart in the way buying groups do business. Like all groups, SMG emphasises the independence that members retain to deal with who they wish and do the deals they want, but they also provide a central purchasing scheme as a platform to streamline the approach. Members can place their orders at preferential rates through Orderlink without the need for a direct account with the supplier. Retailers can compare prices quickly for the best deal and enjoy prices that are more competitive than wholesalers – perfect for ad hoc orders, niche products and trying some new ranges as a “toe in the water” before committing.
“ Being a member of SMG has been invaluable to us over the years. From the obvious financial advantages to the excellent Central Purchasing facility (Orderlink) and we don’t understand why all good flooring retailers are not desperate to join!” Darren Ironside, Carpet Barn, Ferndown
“ SMG offer our retail business the perfect support package required, from negotiating highly competitive supplier prices on our behalf, to providing a whole host of other services including discounted business insurance, energy rates, waste management, credit card terminal packages and so much more. The highly experienced team at SMG have a real understanding of what a true working partnership should be.” Marc Helliwell, Culm Valley Carpets, Devon 50
The “Pure” marketing concept at SMG has been a major success since its launch with its sophisticated branding and smart merchandising. Members can take as much or as little of the approach as they feel works for them but the benefits of own-label in protecting retailers from price comparison and online is undisputed. What the “Pure” concept adds is an intelligent modular approach which stores can use in a flexible and interchangeable way across carpet and vinyl offers. Latest innovations include a distinctive presentation table that adds a studio feel to the in-store environment. The overall effect is to enhance retailers’ confidence to trade up consumers and link sales across flooring types and add-on sales. BUYING GROUP FOCUS
Safety in numbers – the benefits of buying group membership for retailers Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions
ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups provide marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 52
Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

SHOPTALK • NEW FEATURE A long hot summer for better quality sales? This will be a summer when some have more money to spend. The demographics of that consumer group with unspent savings and pent-up demand tends to be more middle-class, more middle age plus young professionals – i.e. just the sort of people who can be traded up to better, less price-sensitive flooring products. This month, SHOPTALK looks at some of the quality and design trends coming through for the Summer season.
A move towards better quality products - at a better price!
Pattern and colour are a feature of cosier carpets
Herringbone and parquet designs are having their hayday
Planks dominate but LVT tiles are being used more widely
Move to more high-end products
Cosy and colour coming through
“There is a quality feel to the immediate future,” says Steve Depport of Metro Group. “For example, retailers have already seen a trend towards more traditional styles of tighter, shorter pile twists and I think this is welcomed by many as a more reliable, robust product.” “There is a quality to these products that can command a better price.”
“Cosy carpet seems to enjoying something of a renaissance following the unremitting rise of vinyl, reflecting the “nesting” trend of the long winter of this pandemic,” says Linda Thomas of SMG.
“This is not a return to hard twists, customers are still looking for some softness,” says Steve, “but there is less appetite to go soft all over the house.”
“ Although product development has been held back in recent months of course, I think manufacturers are investing in their wool ranges and freshening them up along with some more interesting colours.” “This also carries through into the growth we have seen coming through in wool,” he says. “Although product development has been held back in recent months of course, I think manufacturers are investing in their wool ranges and freshening them up along with some more interesting colours. There seems to be more belief in wool at the moment.” Richard Moore at ACG agrees: “PP sales will continue to be dominant in carpets of course but I see wool continuing to fight back along with high end sustainable eco ranges being developed, in the mid-long term.”
“ There’s a move to more high-end products - velvets, velvet and twist, and tartans – which appear more and more, both in wilton PP and wool axminster and I see certain suppliers looking to develop more quality nylon carpet ranges.” “There’s a move to more high-end products - velvets, velvet and twist, and tartans – which appear more and more, both in wilton PP and wool axminster and I see certain suppliers looking to develop more quality nylon carpet ranges.” Design trends that have been coming through over the last year also include a return to colour as consumers locked into their homes look for more interest and personality in their décor with warm, cosy tones to the fore. 56
If flooring follows the paint market then you can see a little more colour coming in with certain shades of blue/green, blue aqua, olive, peach, blossom. Patterns, especially plaids (again) and small geometrics appear to be increasingly popular. On the vinyl side, the choice of designs has continued to grow, even during the pandemic, with parquet and herringbone dominating the consumer interiors magazines and blogs with follow-through into retail sales. “LVT sales will continue to grow and see retailers investing significant amounts of money in new marketing and displays,” says Richard. David Spragg of The Stocklists commented: “After thousands of square metres of light and medium oak planks have been laid, bland is banned in many fashionable households, hence the current popularity of parquet designs – with some great block patterning as well as herringbone.”
“LVT sales will continue to grow and see retailers investing significant amounts of money in new marketing and displays,” “An interest in using more tile designs – and not just in kitchens and bathrooms – is coming through, as well as the trend for Victoriana in entrances and hallways. There are some great designers working in the leading LVT manufacturers who have risen to the occasion and will continue to keep us interested!”
SHOPTALK • A new feature in The Stocklists... An occasional series in which we’ll ask different sector experts what’s going on inside our industry. Flooring
Factsheet Adhesive Types Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticized PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors.
ADHESIVES
SELECTION CHECKLIST
The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time: The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked. Odour: Low odour, solvent free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.
Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels.
Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.
Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive.
Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.
Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.
Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured. Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but
this criteria must be checked where appropriate. Subfloor: What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard. While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces. The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation. Special Performance: Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments. Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.

Flooring factsheet from Interfloor Best Practice Guide Fitting the Right Underlay Selecting the right underlay is not always easy. There are a lot to choose from and there are many factors to consider such as comfort, durability, suitability with underfloor heating, noise reduction, warmth and more. Interfloor has been advocating the use of underlay with new floorcoverings since the 1940s, pioneering its “British method” worldwide and developing its market-leading brands Duralay and Tredaire to supply hundreds of customers in over 70 countries. Here they offer advice on the key considerations for selecting the best underlay …
Our Underlay Range
Sustainability Re-use and recycling are key considerations for determining a flooring product’s green credentials. Interfloor’s crumb rubber and PU foam underlays contain approximately 80%-90% recycled content. The crumb rubber is made from recycled car tyres and some 3 million are recycled every year to make our underlay. We launched FSC® certified carpet gripper in 2011 and produced the first EC1 and EC2 flooring adhesives in 2008.
Impact sound With more people opting for hard floorcoverings there are major benefits to using a specialist underlay; not least, the reduction in sound impact. Interfloor’s Duralay was the first brand to develop special noise reduction underlays for wood and laminate floors. Independent tests prove our sponge rubber Timbermate underlays, with their superior weight and density, reduce acoustic noise levels by up to 30 per cent.
Underfloor heating It’s important to make sure that the effect of underfloor heating is not reduced by the underlay. Choose a specialist underlay for use with underfloor heating and check its thermal insulation value, making sure the thermal resistance of the total installation doesn’t exceed 0.15m2 K/W. Interfloor’s high tog underlays, including Duralay Heatflow and Tredaire King and Defender, help keep rooms warm and cosy.
Quality standards With greater emphasis being placed on building products’ performance, it’s important that those used in residential and commercial environments conform to British and European quality standards. Interfloor’s underlays and accessories are compliant with the relevant quality and safety standards, including BS 5808: 1991 / EN14499 : 2015. They also hold the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) Green Label Plus accreditation, meaning our products conform to the CRI’s high standards for indoor air quality and low VOC emissions.
Interfloor manufactures Tredaire and Duralay, leading brands underlay market, that are recognized by customers as brands of quality, and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 58

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels.
www.interfloor.com
The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet. Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home.
www.floorwise.co.uk
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits
Types
Poor or old underlay will...
Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Combination
Crumb
PU foam
PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).
www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk
Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.
www.luxeunderlay.com
Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Flooring factsheet Vinyl Flooring Vinyl is a fast growing sector of the flooring market due to its durability at relatively low cost and huge range of designs available. Sheet vinyl and cushion floor by the roll are popular but the sector is dominated by LVT. In reality, most of the products sold today are “LVP”, Luxury Vinyl Planks, as wood decors are more popular than ceramics and stone but the term LVT is still used to cover the whole non-sheet market.
Benefits
• Huge choice in terms of decors across wood, ceramic, stone and geometric designs
• I mpressive realism – not just in the design but infinishing
techniques that allow for wood knots you can feel, tiles you can grout, etc. See appearance options.
• Excellent performance in durability for high traffic areas, scratch resistance and cleanability. Vinyl also tends to be much more nonslip than natural materials. Some products are water resistant for bathrooms and kitchens.
Product options
• Dry back – a sheet or tile that needs to be fixed to the sub-floor using an adhesive.
• Self-adhesive – tiles with a peel-off backing paper to stick to the
sub-floor. Some tiles have adhesive overlaps to stick to each other rather than the sub-floor.
• Loose lay vinyl – tiles that simply drop onto the floor and rely on
a high friction backing to keep them in place – they demand a very sound, level sub-floor but are the easiset type of tile to lay or replace.
• Click – tiles that have a mechanical jointing system to attach to •W arm and soft to touch compared to ceramic and stone floors - and one another (like a locked tongue and groove system) and ‘float’ on a good heat insulator anyhow, and suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.
• Sound reduction – vinyl has neglible impact sound compared
to the tap/click of laminate and transmits less sound and vibration compared to solid floor.
• Considerably cheaper than the ‘real’ thing – both to buy and to fit – and tile/plank approach minimises wastage.
Installation
Installation preparation Vinyl requires a dry, sound, level subfloor as the relative thinness of vinyl and its light reflection performance will quickly reveal imperfections after installation as well as cause potential wear issues. Exisitng wooden/MDF floors may need a plywood underlay up to 6mm thick and then the joints will need to be skimmed or taped. Non-wood sub-floors will need a self-levelling screed to be laid to ensure a suitable base for the floor. A damp-proof membrane may be required depending on sub-floor moisture levels. However, new rigid core products are less flexible and can be laid more easily over existing floors – see Construction.

the sub-floor without being glued down. There are many proprietary versions of the click system which offer fast, clean installation and stability.
Appearance options Vinyl tiles and planks cover a hugh variety of sizes and shapes and can be mix-and-matched to achieve an infinite number of designs. Current fashions include extra wide and long planks for wood through to very small planks for wood. Border effects can be easy to achieve in LVT.
www.karndean.com
Other notable options include:
• Embossed – this is where the top clear layer of the tile has been
embossed to create a realistic texture that matches the style of the stone of wood decor. Registered embossed is the most authentic – the texture matches the design so that, for example, a wood knot or hand-scraped element in the wood design can be felt on the surface of the flooring.

strips or beads of vinyl for addewd realism – and there are acrylic grouts that can be applied. In wood decors, planks are available with v-grooves or bevelled edges between planks for added realism.
LVT construction
Top coating – A polyurethane or aluminium oxide coating provides protection against scratches and stains and gives enhances anti-slip. Wear layer – This is a key layer - determining the performance and resilience of the product. A 0.3mm (12 mil) wear layer is a good for heavy wear areas. Commercial installations need 0.5mm wear layers or above with 0.7mm at the top end. The wear warranties and guarantees carried by products will be based on this thickness. Decor layer – This is the decor itself - in essence it is a paper- or filmbased photographic inkjet print. (A few LVT floors have the image printed directly to the surface of the floor but this implies less image definition and different wear characteristics.)
PVC Middle Layer(s) Fibre Glass Layer(s) PVC Base Layer
THE STOCKLISTS April 2021
PVC and fibre glass layers – The construction ‘sandwich’ can vary between products but a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers for strength and flexibility and fibre glass layers for structural stability may be used. Any click-system profile will be incorporated into these layers. Products often use a combination of recycled vinyl which is cheaper and virgin PVC which lasts longer and is more stable. Rigid core LVT has a solid, less flexible PVC layer with maximum stability which means it can be laid over exisiting, less even flooring without showing imperfections and therefore avoiding wear problems. Base (or backing) layer – The final high density PVC layer varies according to the installation requirement and is designed for taking adhesive or as an ‘underlay’ for loose-lay and click installations. 65
