Sensational Saxonies
The shining lights in our summer collection. As we enjoy the rays of summer sunshine, it’s worth planning ahead for the onset of colder weather and the need to introduce some warmth into our lives. It’s time to think about saxonies. A saxony carpet is the ultimate choice for virtually every room in the home. It’s easy to see why, because saxonies have become an iconic symbol of beauty, softness and luxury. Add this to our generous stain and wear warranties and you realise what tremendous value-for-money
these ranges represent. Their popularity has arisen from years of development by Associated Weavers to produce the very best in traditional cut-pile technology, combined with practical durability. But our designers also know how to anticipate current trends, by offering the most fashionable choices. Evocative colours such as Frosted Dawn, Misty Rose, Smoked Pearl and Warm Terracotta all feature across our bestselling ranges of sensational saxonies.
Saxonies make iSense irresistible
A saxony has the ability to look like pure velvet. Add the astounding technology that Associated Weavers have pioneered in bounce-back fibre qualities, and you have a degree of luxury that you won’t find with other carpet brands. Serenity and Suspense are the two saxony styles in this range that feature our 100% iSense yarn in a heavy-duty 2500gm weight. Perfect for floor-appeal in any room of the home.
Super-soft Invictus saxonies
Invictus saxonies aren’t just soft. They’re super-soft. Our unique iVinci SDO StainAway yarn has turned it into one of our best-ever sellers. First came Sirius and Pegasus, with the launch of Invictus last year. But we’re constantly improving and extending the offering, so now we’ve introduced Hyperion, a luxurious super-soft 2380gm Saxony, to the collection. The outstanding stain resistance of saxonies, together with up-to-the-minute colour choices, makes Invictus one of our most comprehensive ranges ever.
Stain-free saxonies in StainAway
Our renowned StainAway range features three styles of 100% polypropylene bleach-cleanable saxonies – Sophistication, StainGuard Saxony and Temptation. We are so confident about the ultimate durability of their StainGuard XL fibre construction, that we offer a full 20-year StainAway warranty as well as a 20-year wear guarantee on these leading styles. Plan for cooler weather now with a beautiful selection of autumnal colourways.
Rise and shine to saxonies
Whether you choose iSense, Invictus or StainAway, you know that you’ll be recommending the natural luxury and warmth that turns your customer’s house into a comfortable home. Talk to your Associated Weavers area manager today and ask for some samples. You’re bound to take a shine to our saxonies in your store.

Luxury vinyl tiles from Polyflor’s innovative Affinity255 PUR flooring collection were recently used to create a stunning herringbone design floor at Natural Bed Company’s showroom in Sheffield. 290m² of Affinity255 PUR vinyl flooring in the Seasoned Grey Oak design was installed in the shop floor area by Sheffield based contractors MG Flooring on this project managed by Structural Interiors and designed by Studio Gedye. Whole planks of the grey wood effect luxury vinyl tiles were laid in a simple yet eye-catching herringbone pattern which perfectly complemented the store’s pared-down, Scandi style interior. Available in 16 contemporary and traditional wood effect designs, Polyflor’s Affinity255 range of hardwearing luxury vinyl tiles for heavy commercial environments are ideal for use in the retail spaces where high levels of foot traffic are expected. This collection was designed with a 2mm gauge so it can be easily fitted alongside other 2mm vinyl sheet flooring products such as heterogeneous, homogeneous and slip resistant safety flooring. The Affinity255 range also features a cross linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) which protects the floor and allows for a simple cleaning regime. Polyflor’s Affinity255 range has impressive environmental credentials, achieving a BRE A+ rating in major use areas and Indoor Air Comfort Gold, assuring that VOC emissions are below any globally determined levels. Pretty in Pink for Rackhams with the first of their new fleet of vehicles. These high spec DAF vehicles, fully equipped for making swift deliveries at both customers own addresses and when they need a direct site drop, are turning heads all over London and the Home Counties!
Rackhams, one of the last surviving independent & traditional distributors in London continue to look to the future and this modern rebranding is one small part of it. The new Magenta look follows on from the success of their “Oaken Options” engineered wood range which has been in the market place for the last year. Director Grahame Smith observed: “When we launched Oaken Options into the market not only did we receive fantastic feedback on the product and almost immediate sales, we had a lot of positive feedback about the look of the marketing, and the colour of the sample boards we had designed. The obvious choice thereon was to expand that ‘look’ across our range, and as we are updating our whole distribution fleet, this seemed like a perfect opportunity to spread the message and enjoy the benefits of our new eye catching design.” The other big change this year at forward thinking Rackhams Ltd is the introduction of their fully integrated and customer friendly web ordering system ‘Speedfeed’ which enables their customers to directly access the Rackhams stock and ordering system and check stock and order directly, whether it’s during traditional trading hours or not. Fast, fully intuitive and full of useful options, this enables their customers to quickly place their orders on the move, from their tablet or smartphone, or from the comfort of their office PC. NEWS Pedals quicken Pulse
Ahead of this year’s Giro d’Italia, Quick-Step has built a special warm-up stage for the Etixx – Quick-Step pro cycling team. The goal? Putting its quality claims concerning the Livyn Pulse collection to the test, demonstrating the floor’s strength and durability when placed in intensive spaces. Three Quick-Step Master Installers were used to lay the flooring at the Velodrome Omnisport, the design of choice ‘Sea Breeze Oak Natural’ from the new Livyn Pulse vinyl collection. As expected, the floor was put under extreme pressure, bicycles continuously serviced as cyclists came and went. The goal was twofold: provide a stylish start for the cyclists and prove the quality of Livyn Pulse along the way, the floor’s accentuated knots and cracks surprising the riders as they believed they were warming up on genuine wood. “I was genuinely surprised to hear that the floor was vinyl, as it really looked and felt like a true hardwood floor,” says Marcel Kittel, Etixx – QuickStep cyclist. “There was great variation across the planks, and the shading and tones were particularly natural.” Even when subjected to heavy use by the Etixx – Quick-Step pro cycling team, the Quick-Step floor lived up to its reputation: stylish and resistant to scratches, stains and water. From servicing the bicycles to withstanding the spiked cleats on the cycling shoes, the floor stayed in perfect condition thanks to the top coating that provides a revolutionary protective seal layer equipped with Stain and Scratch Guard technology. www.quick-step.co.uk
Stability ability
F. Ball and Co. Ltd., has launched Stopgap SRS surface reinforcement system. Stopgap SRS is designed to rapidly stabilise and reinforce weak or poorly compacted screeds, providing a quick, simple, and cost-effective solution. Stopgap SRS rapidly penetrates weak and friable screeds, filling gaps and cracks, and binding loose particles together. This creates a stronger, more stable surface. In most applications, the product can completely overcome the need to remove and replace the entire screed, which can be a costly and time-consuming process. Stopgap SRS has a fast setting time, which means that screeds can be reinstated overnight. This allows contractors to minimise the disruption that can be caused by a badly weakened screed; a particularly useful feature for when deadlines are tight. F. Ball and Co Ltd.’s Marketing Manager, Richard Harris, commented on the launch of Stopgap SRS: “We’re very excited to be bringing this product to market. Removing a weak or poorly installed screed can be a big job, taking up a great deal of a contractor’s valuable time. Stopgap SRS provides them with a ready and reliable solution to this common problem.” Stopgap SRS is a solvent-free, low viscosity, two component epoxy resin surface reinforcement system. It is applicable over both sand/cement and calcium sulphate screeds, including those that contain piped underfloor heating systems. It can also be used over certain screeds that contain a significant amount of construction moisture, or where there is no effective damp proof membrane in place. T 01583 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Interfloor export excellence
A flooring manufacturer that pioneered the ‘British method’ of installing underlay across the world has been recognised for its exporting success in the inaugural UK Export Excellence Awards.
Interfloor was named winner in two high profile categories at the prestigious Export Excellence Awards 2016 ceremony and gala dinner held in Liverpool on 15 June as part of the International Festival of Business 2016. Interfloor won the Innovation in Exporting and Exporting Excellence in MENA awards, and was a finalist for the overall title of Exporter of the Year.

Interfloor employs over 300 people across manufacturing sites in Haslingden and Dumfries. The firm, which has a manufacturing history dating back to the 1940s, is Europe’s largest manufacturer of underlay and accessories supplying flooring retailers, distributors, carpet producers and flooring contractors worldwide. The use of underlays under carpets is a very British concept and until the late 1990s Interfloor’s business was almost entirely confined within the UK and ROI. Twenty years later, and as a direct result of training overseas carpet fitters and project consultants in the benefits and techniques of using an underlay, exports now account for over 15% of Interfloor’s turnover. Interfloor’s entry into the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) market dates back to 1994 when the company took a stand at a Dubai trade exhibition with the aim of introducing the local markets to the British methods of carpet installation involving the use of underlay. Up until that time carpets sold in this region were mainly plain in colour and of the high pile tufted ‘velour’ variety sourced principally from the USA and Belgium. No underlay was used, indeed it was deemed to be unnecessary given the thickness of the carpet pile. Following the show, Interfloor recognised that it needed to convince people about the benefits of an underlay and train the installers in the basic techniques needed to install carpets correctly using its products. An installation video was a great success in educating the public at the point of sale and resulted in ever increasing numbers of customers demanding to have their carpets installed using the ‘British method’.

Life beyond Brexit
‘Keep calm and carry on!’ “Keep calm and carry on” is the flooring industry’s refrain following the referendum vote – but levels of “calm” vary across the sector! The only certainty for now is uncertainty.
In the immediate aftermath of the vote,YouGov and Cebr polls reported a crash in consumer confidence with Scott Corfe at Cebr saying consumers had been “highly spooked” by the result. A separate post-vote survey by Retail Economics found that more than a third of people were planning to cut back on large purchases such as holidays and home furnishing. The respected GfK Consumer Confidence Barometer (CCB) conducted a special review to measure post-referendum sentiment, and revealed their core index has fallen 8 points to minus 9 – the lowest level for 21 years. Six in 10 (60%) expect the general economic situation to worsen in the next 12 months, up from 46% in June. Breaking down the GfK result, it was found even Brexiteers had fallen in confidence to minus 5 with Remainers at minus 13. Perversely, the South which voted mainly to remain, recorded a fall of just minus 2 whereas as the North, which got the result it wanted, fell to minus 19. Overall, industry reports suggests that mainstream manufacturers were trading 10-15% below last year’s level immediately before and after the vote but there appears to have been some return towards more normal sales levels now that the shock is subsiding – and higher value sales appear to be holding up well throughout this period. The unexpectedly rapid appointment of Theresa May as the new Prime Minister is also expected to steady consumers’ nerves.
Furnishing shares fall sharply after vote
Publicly-quoted company Carpetright is the most visible indicator in the flooring sector. Their shares plummeted 20% on the day after the vote before staging a modest recovery to a16% drop and this despite having reported a profits increase of a third to £17.3m for the year ended April 30. “It’s a very strange atmosphere,” said Carpetright chief executive Wilf Walsh. “The outlook has been further complicated by the outcome of last week's referendum and we are cautious about the impact the associated uncertainty will have on consumer confidence.” “So, is there any good news I hear you say?,” asks Steve Evans of management consultants Oppulant who specialise in the flooring sector and work with many leading UK brands. “Well yes of course there is! The markets will settle and we, the good old UK, will eventually move on. Maybe stronger, and maybe not. Either way, be of no doubt that this will be a very messy divorce indeed, and all of us are in for a tough ride! “So, do we throw our hands in the air and give up? No of course we don’t! We are where we are whether we voted to stay or leave, and now is exactly the right moment to step up to the plate, work together and make things happen,” says Steve.

Exchange rate issues bring mixed fortunes
Importers were less inclined to comment last week as they weigh up the impact of exchange rates on their business but Jeremy Wilson of leading UK manufacturer Ulster Carpets was sanguine about the future. “Whilst the result last week was a shock to many businesses, ultimately whatever happens we will just have to adapt and deal with it. Long term there is no doubt compromises will be reached and we will end up with a slightly weaker trading arrangement with Europe but it won’t be much different and a weaker exchange rate will most likely negate any extra costs,” he said. “I think the fundamentals are still good.” Jeremy added: “Feedback from retailers generally was that the couple of weeks leading up to the referendum showed a drop off in footfall but that there has been a pick up since then and things are reasonably normal for this time of year.” Older, better-off voters got the result they wanted and should be “happy to continue spending!” he added. Martin West of Kingsmead Carpets agrees. "The vote didn't go the way many in business expected or wanted, but at the end of the day a lot of people will continue to need to buy carpets and the retailers and suppliers who get those orders will be the ones who are doing the best job. We'll make sure we're in that category!” he said. “But the exchange rate movement means there will be real pain in some quarters and price rises are inevitable – the industry does not have the margins to absorb extra costs in this climate." “The most over-used, but most probably apt expression both before and after the referendum is ‘uncertainty,’” says David Cormack at Cormar. “Yet the one thing we believe that most businesses, including carpet retailers, like is stability and reliability! This year being Cormar’s 60th year, the possibility of a downturn is not new and in such times we put even more emphasis on providing stability and certainty for our customers.” The Stocklists readers’ survey in May reported that 60% of retailers expected little or no change in business prospects whichever way the referendum vote went. We’ll be asking you again later in the year when a little more dust has settled!

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!
The agenda is to ensure that the retailer has a better understanding of wool carpets and truly understand why they are the best choice for the home.
Great promotions coming soon at The Flooring Show!
WoolRetailer.com will be launched to consumers in the October issue of Homes & Gardens magazine, which is on the shelf in September. The publication contains the 8-page ‘Beauty of Wool’ supplement and will also carry a full page feature explaining the website to readers of the magazine.
This is the first time that the unique wool website has been promoted to consumers and the aim is to get as many retailers involved as possible in the coming month. The website which signposts consumers to quality retailers and wool products has led the way in promoting wool knowledge to flooring retailers and then promoting the retailers to consumers.
British Wool Carpet of the Month
Brintons offer of stripes in their Stripes Collection feature bright and crisp colours that complement any style from elegantly traditional to super modern. A subtle combination of twist and velvet yarn adds depth and interest to what is ostensibly a classic pattern. Made from the famous 80/20 blend - which was pioneered by Brintons - these are luxurious and hardwearing carpets for great longevity in the home. Stripes can be found in both the Laura Ashley range - RRP - £74.99 and the Pure Living range - RRP - £49.99. These are woven wilton styles and most of the designs can be matched with a Bell Twist co-ordinate to create that seamless look in the home.
This is all part of The Campaign for Wool and British Wool’s agenda to ensure that the retailer has a better understanding of wool carpets and truly understand why they are the best choice for the home.
Testing the understanding of those working at the front of the wool chain is a key part of this - and the ‘Take Five’ wool tests are an online testing process which leads to retailers becoming accredited ‘Wool Specialists’ and gaining a Retailer profile page on the website and access to the Wool Dashboard with its benefits and assets. At The Flooring Show in Harrogate next month, retailers will be able to sign up there and then, which will immediately connect them to an audience that increasingly searches for its products online.
Also, the Campaign for Wool (CfW) will again host its ‘Wool Trends’ area in Hall C. A popular feature of the flooring event that is surrounded by the industry’s best names in wool carpet. Here, the CfW sets out to provide a dynamic feature installation that puts the beauty of wool in the spotlight. It also provides a bright, refreshing and open area to stop and talk to the experts of the industry.
British Wool has a lot going on this year and will launch its new Premium Labels Partnership - which provides high value wool blend recognition through its new Gold and Platinum labels. This has been developed to provide quality manufacturers with an identifiable label for product that uses higher levels of British Wool.
Highly regarded as a strong and robust carpet fibre - British Wool in levels of 70% of the wool blend for Gold and 100% of the wool content for Platinum, provides added durability and longer lasting appearance retention. Look out for these labels - manufacturers are going to be using them soon!
British Wool will also host the sign-up station for WoolRetailer.com and the team will be there to advise visitors to the event on the benefits of these new promotions and answer any queries on wool face-to-face. We hope you have booked your ticket for this great event in beautiful Harrogate!

and why we like it...
Stripes speak of simpler times before we had so much choice to choose from! Stripes, as two ex fashion editors of Vogue have rightly defined in their new stripes only brand, are never out of place in fashion or in this case... the home. We like the vibe that Brintons has evolved with their Stripes Collection - the designs offer a personal statement to the floor. A stripe - we say - is always a stripe, it is never pattern - which is why everybody and all ages could not help but love this brilliant British Wool collection of super stylish stripes! Brintons is a big British Wool fan and we are a big fan of their stripes! August 2016 33
NEWS Less is more
Specialist in flooring Quick-Step continues its drive to produce products for the latest interior looks and trends. The UK is renowned for its love of a more eclectic interior, with furniture, soft furnishings and collectables all combining to create that cosy, homely, lived in feeling. However, Japanese influences are taking hold and the experts at Quick-Step reveal why we, the UK population, are becoming more intune with the minimalist look. Under the motto ‘less is more’, our interiors are stripped down to the bare minimum of components. After all, having a lot of stuff can make for a chaotic look. Minimalism was born out of this premise, as a symbol of a more refined style of living. And uncluttered rooms have a positive effect on your home, body and spirit. Time for a clear out! Who feels happy in a sea of stuff? Not many people, if we go by the sales figures of bestseller ‘The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up’. The Japanese tidying up celebrity and author Marie Kondo has conquered many households with her book in which she extolls the virtues of a minimalist style of living. Living with less stuff and paring down to the essentials carries over to your interior. Japanese Zen - You don’t have to look very far to find the secret fascination many Westerners hold for Eastern interior design: peace, space, serenity and an eye for detail all typify minimalism. Simplicity is a keyword in Japanese interiors. When it comes to minimalism, this country is ahead of the game. Japanese style places the emphasis on the essential and does away with everything superfluous. Spaces exude calm and draw your attention only to the few objects that were put there to make a statement.
Pure and light - Minimalism is also synonymous of a modern interior. This style emanates serenity and peace, but remains exciting by playing with different contrasts. Light, plenty of space, the use of neutral colours and a mix of styles all rule in a minimalist look. Natural materials such as marble, linen, wood, and even steel and glass are also typical of this style of décor. They make minimalism a pure design philosophy. Combine these materials for more breathing space and create a natural balance in your home. Glorious simplicity - Colours in minimalist home décor are pure in their simplicity. Busy wallpaper patterns and bright colours are a thing of the past. They are often monochrome: shades of white, grey, anthracite and black form the perfect backdrop to a minimalist interior. The floor can be the perfect canvas for this décor. These colours aren’t only for walls but also for floors. A warm wood look will keep things feeling cosy... and that’s a great thing to come home to! www.quick-step.co.uk

Rol-lite Blinds positive partnerships
Following the positive new partnerships created as a result of exhibiting at last year’s Flooring Show, Rol-lite Blinds are delighted to return again this September. This time around they have a slightly larger floor space allowing us to show a more diverse range of products. The decision to exhibit at The Flooring Show was partly based on the findings of a customer survey undertaken which identified that existing carpets/ flooring specialist customers sell more blinds than their soft furnishing customers. This was an intriguing finding and led them to pursue new partnerships within the carpet and flooring sector. At the upcoming exhibition they will be showing how straight forward window blinds are to install. There will also be a daily prize for the person who can install their no drill Perfect Fit blinds in the quickest time. Hall B Stand 12 • 0161 338 2681 • www.rol-lite.co.uk

For the show Adam will be marking the landmark with a stunning stand carpet made up from current Fine Worcester colours. Masterpiece taking the tablet Customers will be impressed in their home by the professional presentation of this new technology MasterPiece. There is a clear attraction here for those who have already invested in an ipad or Android tablet. However, the new version has a further benefit by saving to the cloud, so jobs are backed up and immediately available to colleagues back in the store. The new version has many of the usability benefits of traditional PC based MasterPiece. For example, the drawing and measuring of rooms is done the same way as when using paper and pencil. In addition, the new stairway builder provides a significantly faster way of defining the components of a stairway. The main joy, however, will be not having to spend the evening wading through a backlog of plans. Hall C Stand 75 • 01737 355831 • www.masterpiece-system.com
CRUK seminars to recycle Retailers can gain practical advice and tips on how to recycle carpets that can generate significant savings on disposal costs in two seminar sessions hosted by Carpet Recycling UK at the Harrogate Flooring Show. CRUK, the industry’s association for recycling and reusing carpet, will also be exhibiting at stand M35 during the three-day event. Both seminar sessions will begin with a talk from Jane Gardner of CRUK and will provide an overview of the latest developments in carpet recycling and updates on its progress towards its 60% landfill diversion target by 2020. Landfill diversion of carpets has increased from 2% to 31% over the past eight years. The first seminar at 3pm on Sunday will incorporate a talk from Simon Wells of Kenburn Waste Management, a CRUK member, who will explain how compacting waste can help to bulk up carpet volumes for onward transport to recyclers and ultimately save money on waste disposal costs. On Tuesday at 10.45am following Jane’s update, Peter Steel of Linney Cooper, another CRUK member, will unveil ‘The Secret of Carpet Recycling’ and outline the thought processes and steps that retailers should consider to make recycling work for them. Commenting on the achievements of Carpet Recycling UK, Director Laurance Bird said: “Thanks to on-going support from our core funders who are leading the way for sustainability within the carpet value chain, the reuse and recycling of waste carpet across the UK continues to rise year on year. This is very encouraging, yet there is still much that we can do. Our seminar was the best-attended in 2015, so we’re delighted to have been allocated two seminar slots at this year’s show.” Hall M Stand 35 • 0161 440 8325 • www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

Flower on Flooring Retailers told: get wise to wood In a competitive world, there is a constant search to gain added advantage for businesses of all types, and the flooring sector is no different in this respect. Read on for advice on how to add valuable new sales and boost profits by including wood flooring in your offering. Kährs UK and Ireland country manager Harvey Booth says: “In today’s marketplace, working to a defined strategy and researching the marketplace is essential. There are so many different ways to promote your goods and services, and each and every route needs to be carefully examined. “For example, would a name change from being a ‘carpet’ specialist to a ‘flooring’ specialist increase your appeal, both on the kerb-side and online? Should you increase floor space available to new innovations or specific product groups, like wood, in order to cater for a much more design-savvy audience? Now, more than ever before, it’s vital to find out who your customer is and how best to interact with them.” With “fabulous flooring options available”, including over 130 wood floors from Mr Booth's company, he says these range from tradition to contemporary colour and tactile treatments that will steer surface trends for the coming seasons.
Including options for any interior, from classic period homes with the extra-long and extra-wide Imperio through to modern apartments with Castello, she says all Hardwood flooring is made to the highest standards. “For homeowners wanting wood flooring that becomes a central part of the design of their interior, then the Quick-Step Hardwood collection is well-worth investigating,” says Ms Hautekeete. Xylo Flooring asks retailers: “Are your clients asking for your advice on hot new interior design trends? A number of quirky and individual styles are in fashion this summer, taking in everything from wall covering to furniture to flooring.” It constantly monitors the latest interior décor styles and colours, resulting in designs such as: Back To Nature – with the growing emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendliness there is a trend for interior design based on nature. Metal finish – living spaces can be enhanced with a touch of metallic tone with grey sheen finishes. Typically Tropical – with the Olympics being held in Brazil this has encouraged exotic interiors; the American Black Walnut Flooring option can complete the look;
Quick-Step international PR and sponsoring manager Sophie Hautekeete said homeowners now consider wood floorings that “help to make their interior distinct” and says her company has “long pioneered different wood looks”.
70’s Retro – “The decade of glam rock is back and particularly fashionable at the moment are our light stained oak floors which contrasts perfectly with a full pallet of colours,” says Xylo Flooring.
She refers to its Hardwood collection, offering pale white through to rich dark hues. “It’s not just the tone of the floor that has an impact on the interior, but plank size, wood grade and surface finish can all dramatically alter the mood of wood flooring,” she continues.
Frank's The Flooring Store shares its thoughts on wood flooring: “We ensure shopping is not just functional, but it is an experience for our customers. We’ve invested in our stores as a whole and in new displays to make sure we’re showing off our products at their best.

Marketing insights The advance of the tartan army Plaids and tartans continue to grow in popularity as these versatile designs sit comfortably in both residential and commercial interiors. Colour combinations and striking linear effects make them easy to furnish with, whilst creating a design statement. We caught up with a few of the UK’s leading carpet manufacturers to get their take on today’s tartans. Hugh Mackay, Tartanesque - Glen Rosa
Axminster Carpets has been synonymous with luxury British carpets since 1755. With an extensive range of plain and patterned designs, each Axminster Carpet is made using ethically sourced materials, traditional methods and craftsmanship and individually inspected, ensuring the highest quality product. Brintons has three fantastic stocked ranges of tartans, suitable for all styles of interior. City Plaids have a modern vibrancy using contemporary colours, Abbotsford comprises traditional Scottish tartans in a wide selection of shades and the Abbeyglen series celebrates distinctive Irish tartan design with a warm colour palette to give these carpets a rich, natural and homely quality.
Hugh Mackay run a 40 strong collection of tartans and plaids to suit any decor in the home. The entry level “7 row” Tartanesque was introduced in 2015 and has quickly become one of the company’s best sellers. The collection is made up of 4, 100% un-dyed wool designs and 6 contemporary shades in 80% wool for that sharper, more modern look.
In addition to this Brintons has also launched the new QuickWeave series, including a selection of plaids. Choose from this select range of their famous, highest quality carpets and they will be woven to order and delivered within 6 weeks. With 5 colourways in each pattern and a choice of 5 quality specifications there is plenty for your customers to choose from within the Brintons range. All Brintons tartans are woven Axminsters in their classic 80% wool/20% nylon blend. Exceptionally hard-wearing and versatile with a timeless aesthetic they make the perfect recommendation for any room.
Axminster Carpets, Myth and Moor - Haldon Forest
The flagship 8 row Tartan Collection is still the company’s best-selling Axminster range. First quarter sales for 2016 show that the trend for this type of design is still growing. As with the Tartanesque range, the collection is made up of both 100% un-dyed wool and the more traditional 80/20 construction. Both traditional tartans and contemporary plaids are covered. The 100% wool Ben Lawers design has almost chameleon like qualities with its ability to match almost any shade used with it. We step into the mythical world of fairies, spirits and imps with the latest collection of woven carpets from Royal Warrant Holders Axminster Carpets. Characterised by Axminster Carpets’ worldrenowned quality and unrivalled British design and manufacture, the new Myth and Moor collection of contemporary wool-rich plaids and checks stands apart from the crowd setting a new direction for fashionable checks. Woven in Axminster, Devon using the unique blend of 80/20 wool, this collection is the perfect match of luxury and durability – making it suitable for commercial and extra heavy domestic usage but maintaining all the characteristics of wool.

The timeless plaid design has had a revival in recent years in the world of both fashion and interiors and as such Ulster have created a new 'Plaid Collection'. Comprised of four of Ulster's existing ranges, the Collection offers a diverse interpretation of the iconic design- from the traditional Celtic tartans of Glenmoy and the retro Boho Hamilton, right through to the country cottage feel of Beaumont and the contemporary colours of Braeburn. The Collection has proven popular with young and old, thanks to the adaptability and integrity of the plaid design itself, adding warmth and character to both traditional and contemporary spaces. Ulster have also devised a new bespoke Rug Binding service which allows consumers the option of purchasing these beautiful designs as a rug for the first time.

Champions at Leicester City
Carpet Recycling UK’s recent eighth Annual Conference and Awards Event celebrated the successes and achievements of its resource recovery ‘champions’ at the home of Premier League winners Leicester City Football Club. The packed programme at this ‘inspirational’ venue showcased the achievements and important contributions by members – both individuals and organisations – who have helped to drive forward greater sustainability in the sector. Innovative schemes included carpet tile reuse supporting disadvantaged people, recycled fibres turned into horticultural growing mats and collecting waste carpet from retailers for energy recovery. Around 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arises annually in the UK of which 31% (125,000 tonnes) was diverted from landfill via reuse, recycling and energy recovery in 2015. CRUK’s target is 60% diversion from landfill by 2020. While energy recovery, the equestrian and automotive/leisure sectors offer opportunities for future growth in the UK, CRUK Director Laurance Bird emphasised that segregating carpet waste for reuse and recycling remains a key challenge, particularly for retailers, with whom they’ve been working to develop new solutions. Thanking CRUK’s core funders Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/Headlam, Desso, ege, Milliken, Balsan and Marlings for their on-going support, Laurance said: “In taking a voluntary producer responsibility positioning within the market place, they are recognised as leaders for sustainability within the carpet value chain.” Looking ahead, CRUK will continue to promote design for easier resource recovery, identify new recycling technologies for carpet materials and to develop further recycling outlets and markets in line with Circular Economy principles. Graham Kempton of Designer Contracts Ltd was named Recycling Champion for his commitment to making carpet recycling work by reorganising delivery routes and increasing the capacity to collect more waste. Designer Contracts Ltd also won the Take Back Partner of the Year award for the second year running for working ‘tirelessly to make recycling happen’ and Carpet Tile Recycling was named Reuse Member of the Year for recognising the need to accept all carpet tiles for reuse and its development of new innovative outlets for those tiles that cannot be reused. Recycler of the Year went to Desso UK (a Tarkett Company) for its innovative approach to moving carpets up the waste hierarchy. Doncaster-based reuse and recycling social enterprise Made By U Ltd won the Best Newcomer award and the 2016 Outstanding Achievement award went to Anglo Recycling Technology Ltd for their innovative efforts to achieve high quality carpet fibres for reuse in textiles. A core funder since 2009, Cormar Carpets’ strong commitment to carpet recycling and sustainability, both within their own and customers’ businesses, was recognised with the Longstanding Support award. 0161 440 8325 www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 60
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE
Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet from Interfloor The resurgence of rubber underlay Research into consumer purchase behaviour commissioned by Interfloor in October 2015 shows more people than ever before are buying new underlay when they purchase new carpet.
Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world.
The research suggests this is in part due to improved understanding of the various products and their benefits gained through Internet research and advice from retailers’ own sales consultants. The in-store consumer experience is key to the rising conversion rates, as it gives retailers an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of the different products on offer. Consumers want hands-on experience of quality products which offer high levels of comfort and are fit for purpose. They are less concerned about price and more interested in long-term performance and this has led to the resurgence of traditional rubber underlays such as Tredaire Colours Red, Interfloor’s premium sponge rubber underlay. Sponge rubber underlays have been around since the 1950s for very good reasons. In fact, Tredaire launched Willow Green, the UK’s first sponge rubber underlay in 1956. Sponge rubber underlays are extremely comfortable; no other underlay product produces quite the same feel underfoot. They are also exceptionally good at minimising both impact sound and airborne sound between rooms. They are incredibly flexible and cover more applications than any other underlay type, including specialist low tog underlays for underfloor heating and thin and dense underlays for hard flooring. In a Stocklist readers’ survey published in November 2015, 30% said they were selling more underlay and although 60% find it easy to sell underlay, only 50% were using POS to demonstrate its benefits – one of the key reasons customers visit retailers is to feel samples (83%) or walk on the carpet to see how it feels (26%). Interfloor offers POS items including custom-made swatch books, presentation folders and hanging samples with instore foot testers coming soon. All are designed to help retailers sell exactly the right underlay to every customer that comes to their store.
Over 80% of those who didn’t buy new underlay at the time of their carpet purchase believe that they can use their existing underlay (57%), that underlay isn’t necessary (19%) or an expensive add-on (12%) and yet underlay is a great opportunity to improve the way the consumer feels about the total purchase – and hence the retailer.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Crumb
Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
PU foam
Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.
www.carpenter.limited.uk
Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.
www.underlay.com
Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).
Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 66
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich
britishwool.org.uk campaignforwool.org THE STOCKLISTS August 2016
Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 73
