Carpet&FlooringReview Charming chevrons

with authentic wood looks and impressive durability, Concept woods vinyl flooring from Itec Contract Floors is a popular choice in commercial, health, education, leisure and accommodation projects looking for a floor to withstand intensive use. now with the introduction of a top emboss specifically developed for commercial sheet vinyl and new designs capturing recent trends in wood flooring, Concept woods is ready for the latest interiors.

Chevron Oak exemplifies the ability of Itec Contract Floors to design and manufacture products that ensure the benefits of vinyl flooring can be utilised in areas with high aesthetic principles. Available in light oak (T33) along with light (T91) and dark (T95) grey, the design gives an instant trend-led look. The same can also be said of Groutless Wood, another new design for 2018, that gives an ‘endless’ wood grain pattern. Blending a natural look with the popularity of uniform, jointless surfaces and transitions; Groutless Wood is available in light (T32) and grey (T93). The look of both designs can be maintained with Invisiweld, replacing conventional hot welding as a way of joining sheets without weld rod. Leaving an imperceptible join that’s also stronger and less prone to failure, Invisiweld can be used on all Itec Contract Floors. A four-metre width option, as well as the standard two-metre, also makes Concept Woods ideal for use in large congregation areas. Ortwin Top, product manager, Itec Contract Floors, comments on the updated collection: “Concept Woods is a popular option for projects that need a low-maintenance and durable wood-look floor and with significant improvements to the technology behind it, the collection is better than ever. The new commercial emboss and Hyperguard+ combination give all designs improved realism thanks to a realistic texture and an enhanced matt surface, while also improving cleanability, scuff and dirt resistance, and slip-restraint. The new technology gives Concept Woods the upper hand when it comes to an attractive and durable floor that’s great for use in a multitude of environments.” The Concept Woods collection is stocked at distributors across the country. County set of new colours

The Cormar Carpet Company, has re-launched its popular wool twist Home Counties Plains range with nine brand new colours – increasing the total offering to a choice of 18 fashionable home furnishing shades.

Made from 80% pure new wool, 10% tuftbond and 10% polypropylene, Home Counties Plains is a premier quality tenth gauge carpet in two pile weights (42oz and 50oz), making it ideal for high traffic areas such as stairways and hallways. Branded under the Wools of New Zealand banner, Cormar’s Home Counties Plains hits the right note with its 18 strong palette including new shades Harbour Stone and Quartz. Available in both four and five metre widths, the range will retail from approximately £27 per sq m. “Home Counties Plains has been a great seller for our retailers for over four years,” said David Cormack, marketing director of the Cormar Carpet Company. “However nothing stands still and due to the change in consumer trends, this current relaunch sees an influx of more greys and stoney shades which are at the heart of this collection.” The Cormar Carpet Company produces all its wool and polypropylene carpet ranges from two production sites near Bury, in Lancashire. Its new regional distribution centre is in Hemel Hempstead, with a network of out-bases throughout the UK. NEWS Cracking new designs

designs from the Mad Men collection now rank in the best-selling rugs from louis de Poortere, with the SS18 The Cracks pattern also recently entering the manufacturer’s top 20. Echoing the golden age of advertising in the New York City of the 1960s, Mad Men is a series of bold and powerful rugs woven in an artful blend of high-gloss polyester and cotton chenille.

A mix of straight and broken lines reminiscent of the ragged pencil strokes beginning iconic brand campaigns, Jacob’s Ladder and Griff designs are full of energy and a vibrancy that has seen them become ranked among Louis de Poortere’s most popular designs. Now joined by The Cracks, introduced for SS18, which has already steamed its way into the top 20, Mad Men proves that a powerful story can drive inspirational design. Alan Russell, Sales Director UK, Louis de Poortere, says: “Manhattan in the 1960s saw the creation of many advertising campaigns and slogans that are still familiar and in use today. Our designers saw this era as the perfect inspiration for some really energetic and vibrant designs. Feeling modern yet capturing the mid-century spirit, these convention-breaking designs have grown into some of our best-selling qualities.” Inspired by the world below the surface, The Cracks is cloaked in the hues of Dark Pine, Deep Mine and Abyss Blue and just like the rest of the Mad Men collection, comes in a range of standard sizes from 80 x 150cm up to 280 x 360cm. Hand-finished and with a natural anti-slip latex backing, Mad Men is machine-woven in Belgium. T 01505 615663 www.louisdepoortere.com

amtico academy choice

Products from F. Ball and Co. ltd. have been used to create a ‘textbook perfect’ flooring finish as part of a refurbishment to create a brand new amtico training academy in Coventry. These included F. Ball’s Stopgap 300 Hd levelling compound and Stopgap P131 general purpose primer. The flooring was installed in what is now the reception area of the training centre.

Firstly, ceramic tiles were removed from the existing concrete subfloor along with remaining adhesive. Before the application of a levelling compound, F. Ball’s Stopgap P131 general purpose primer was used. F. Ball’s Stopgap 300 HD levelling compound was then applied to the prepared subfloor to create a perfectly smooth surface ready to receive the Amtico floorcoverings. Slateeffect luxury vinyl tiles with beveled edges were then installed using a solvent-free, temperature tolerant vinyl adhesive with pressure sensitive characteristics. Finally, entryway matting was installed over 50 percent of the remaining area of the prepared subfloor, next to the doorway leading into the reception area. Light-grey, PVC-backed carpet tiles were installed on the other half of the prepared subfloor. Marketing insights Contemporary Classics They say fashion goes in circles, well we’ve found time-honoured classic flooring designs being revitalised with fresh colours, renewed with subtle details and reengineered for present day interiors.

Brintons offers a wide selection of contemporary classics including iconic tartans, stripes and striking geometrics. They manage to refresh traditional textile patterns with current colour palettes to help keep them modern and flexible. Jodie Hatton, Creative Designer for Brintons says: “These patterns recur time and again as they offer enduring style and endless versatility. For example, the trend for vintage, reclaimed textiles gives our City Plaids carpets a modern vibrancy but the subtle colour palette adds a fashionable edge to this timeless pattern. Similarly, gingham and polkadots as seen in our Padstow series often return each season alongside florals as both a wardrobe and interiors staple.” This trend for timeless yet modern has been further accentuated with Brintons new launch for 2018 – Perpetual Textures. The name itself signifies the eternal popularity of key fabrics and patterns with the designs for this range being influenced by the beauty of chenille, corded and tweed.

Strawberry Meadow is an original, hand drawn Liberty Design Studio exclusive of William Morris's famous design ‘Strawberry Thief’ and features strawberry bushes and birds in tonal shades that translate beautifully as carpet.

Due to overwhelming Strawberry Meadow demand, Ulster is adding new colourways to its highly popular Braeburn, Country House Collection Beaumont, and Tazmin ranges.

The new colours in Braeburn and CHC Beaumont expand the choice of elegant plaids on offer from Ulster. While the Tazmin new colours have been designed with the current fusion feel of interiors in mind, giving this classic range a modern feel. All of these new additional colourways are available in five colour matching multi widths and are woven in an 80% wool and 20% nylon yarn blend suitable for heavy wear.

“Patterns recur time and again as they offer enduring style and endless versatility” Two great British brands that share a rich heritage of design get together to dress our floors with contemporary classics. Famous Liberty prints are reimagined as carpets and bespoke rugs by Alternative Flooring, bringing more pattern to its distinctive Quirky B collection, an award-winning range that features designs by leading interior and textile designers. There are four signature designs in a total of ten colourways. Enchanting floral, bird, garden and paisley prints that combine detailed pattern and vibrant colour have been refashioned for floors. 24 August 2018

Adam Carpets pioneered the introduction of overtuft ranges with the launch of their Inspirations collection back in 2001. This resulted in tufted carpets being available in classic ‘woven’ designs at a much lower price point than conventional woven products, due to the significantly reduced manufacturing times. The Inspirations range comes in three timeless designs; pin dots, square motifs and circular motifs. This year Adam Carpets bought these muchloved classic designs bang up to date with the introduction of three contemporary greys as the central ground colour; a clean and stunning pale grey, a subtle mid grey and a richer dark grey.

Karndean offers 26 slate designs across its ranges, from light and neutral tones through mid to dark charcoal grey shades to blend perfectly into both traditional and modern home styles.

Avenue is welcoming the best in realism in sheet vinyl, thanks to their updated Ultimate Timber PU collection, which incorporates the new Vgroove technology on selected styles. A deep embossed v-groove enhances the wood plank look in the brand-new and super-stylish designs of Jacobsen, Cartier, Edgewood and Cimarron. Introductions in the chevron of Pamera and narrow board of Bristol, demonstrate this range has enjoyed an extensive overhaul and is ready to transform homes with its modern, ultra-realistic wood effects. Maaike Dickx, Product Manager at Avenue, comments: “As part of this refresh, we’ve not just introduced one or two new designs, but instead turned our attention to making Ultimate Timber PU the very best in cushion vinyl flooring. It’s almost an entirely new collection, but with the ‘ultimate’ in looks and performance there simply isn’t a better name to do it justice and so we stuck with the well-established Ultimate Timber name.”

Adam Carpets also upgraded their Inspirations range to premium all-British certified Platinum Wool and stock all three designs in both 4 metre and 5 metre widths to avoid joins even in larger rooms. “Our retail customers have been pleasantly surprised how these modern shades and clean lustrous wools make a fresh modern statement to fit perfectly with the style of today’s decor in modern homes”, explains Chris Adam, Managing Director at Adam Carpets.

Each floor in the collection is protected with Superguard, a PU wear layer that improves stain and wear performance on a permanent basis making maintenance easier. In two, three and four-metre widths, Ultimate Timber PU can be used everywhere from bathrooms to kitchens and living spaces, delivering ultra-realistic looks with the comfort and warmth of high-quality cushion vinyl flooring.

Karndean Designflooring’s slate designs offer timeless yet contemporary style that can withstand the demands of busy family life and modern living. Slate designs offer subtle blends of colour that reflect the depth and character of the original stone, providing a classic look without the practical drawbacks of a real stone floor. Karndean’s designers visited quarries in the heart of the Lake District and were inspired by the slates they found there. The volcanic rocks of the region, specially selected for their individual and unique features, inspired three new slate designs, available in 12” x 18” tiles, recently launched as part of the popular Knight Tile range. Two riven slate designs, featuring natural splits in the layers of slate, create a palate of mid to dark charcoal tones with a three-dimensional appearance to add a visual depth, while a honed oyster slate design offers a lighter tone with fossilisation and linear veining features, replicating the features of 300-million-year-old slate.

Brand new approach to inspire savvy consumers Cormar transforms carpet marketing The market is changing and carpet market leader Cormar is transforming its appearance and the way it talks to consumers in a major drive to deliver more business to independent retailers.

“Traditional retail, both on the high street and out of town, is under pressure, but internet use is growing and can generate new opportunities to create footfall for retailers,” says david Cormack of Cormar. “70% of major purchases are researched online and consumers are more savvy than ever before.”

The accepted wisdom was that carpet brands are almost invisible to consumers and that the internet is a negative world of price comparison and direct-toconsumer selling. But Cormar are challenging all that in a digital world where social media is dominating and consumers search and share ideas for their homes. Brands are becoming increasingly important as a tag to recognise popular products.

So Cormar has upped the game to a new level with a fresh new design and a whole new digital strategy. The objective is to give the company the opportunity to grow – and take its retailers with it for valuable new sales.

The Cormar logo has not changed in over 25 years. “It looks dated compared to how the interiors market has moved forward and I think flooring in underselling itself to these consumers. The world is changing and we needed a refesh,” says david. “but it had to be just right - we want to be the home furnishings brand of choice for the carpet customer. It is not enough to invest in products, we need to invest in our brand.”

The transformation got underway at the beginning of 2017 and started with intensive research about consumer perceptions and preferences and the development of other brands in the interiors sector. The new logo is clean and modern with an open typeface and the colour palette for the brand is now fashionable blue/greys.

The re-launch of Cormar’s popular Homes Counties Plains range, adding nine colours to the colour bank of 18, is the first range in the new branding.

“ Cormar has the reputation in the trade for the quality of its service and its products but we need to invest in our relationship with our consumers to grow the business for us and our retailers.

“ Traditional retail, both on the high street and out of town, is under pressure, but internet use is growing and can generate new opportunities to create footfall for retailers ” and there is a new message to go with it. The company strapline now says “making your home just right” to recognise the aspirations of consumers to research the detail in order to make the smartest choices for their interiors. There’s an 80-page brand guide to ensure the new approach is communicated consistently.

This new look will be seen across the industry in the months ahead in an ambitious programme that will see all the POS updated during July and august, a brand new stand at Harrogate and new liveries on the company’s fleet of over 60 vehicles, a quarter of which will be changed this year.

But one of the biggest changes is on the Cormar website which has been re-engineered and re-designed to inspire and motivate consumers. galleries of interior imagery show consumers what is possible and carpet is presented by colour and style.

Cormar aims to turn the internet into a positive force for retail sales, recognising that savvy consumers do their research online before coming to the High Street.

There are some key innovations here too. The site shows floor-level views of the carpets as well as flat samples. There are easy tools to post ideas directly to social media platforms such as Pinterest. Customer reviews are catered for and price range information is given. and there is lots of information to make Cormar the ‘go-to’ site for carpets.

we’re aiming to drive traffic to retailers,” says david Cormack. “Consumers want to research online prior to visiting a flooring retailer, so we see our job is to help inspire their interest and drive them into a store with a sample in their hand. Retailers then have a customer that knows what they want and where they can get it.”

The Cormar website is now a class-leading presentation of the company’s portfolio and has advanced facilities for consumer samples and ‘find-a-retailer.

Marketing manager Jason Steer has played a major role in the overhaul. He came to Cormar at the beginning of 2017 from sportswear brand Puma and has a track record at other major brands including the Cooperative group, Silentnight and Russell Hobbs.

“Cormar has the reputation in the trade for the quality of its service and its products, but we need to invest in our relationship with consumers to grow the business for us and our retailers,” said Jason. “we have worked hard on developing an effective new approach. It is the right thing to do and we are doing it the right way.”

Reflecting success in Warwick ACG’s showcase of professionalism – and fun!

Floating on a lake in Warwick, ACGs’ Platinum event made something of a splash at the ultra-modern Slate conference centre in the city’s university campus. This is the flooring industry looking at its very best!

The buying group decided to set a high bar in the presentation of their annual members’ event and the sophisticated showcase provided the perfect lakeside setting to reflect the success of the associated Carpet group and its growing membership.

aCg executive director Richard Moore said: “The Slate at warwick is a top quality venue which creates a great platform for business. Our exhibitors have made a superb effort with a full turnout from all of our 22 preferred suppliers and a very high standard of presentation.

“ We have been with ACG since the 90s and it’s a lovely group to be part of. They are always having new ideas and Richard [Moore] works very hard to make things happen so that we can continue to run our business competitively. ” Tracey and Calvin Skinner of Home Comfort Carpets and Vinyl in County durham (pictured left and centre).

“ACG is good at picking the right products and we are a big fan of the Group’s own label, having about 70% of our stock own labelled in this way. The brand looks great and we very much appreciate the protection this gives us when people are shopping around and making comparisons. ” Sian Pritchard of Blackwoods in South wales (pictured with Phil Hartley of Victoria

“We always wonder why more retailers don’t join a buying groups, it’s a no-brainer. We get a lot back in savings for a small membership fee and the group does a promotion in the key Autumn sales season that makes us even more.We literally save thousands and thousands of pounds as an ACG member. ” Chris Trott of Carpets by Chris in grimsby. Carpet&FlooringReview

“ The event sends out a strong message of professionalism and we are very vigorous in our approach to marketing to give everyone the best chance of doing the best business. As a result, we have an event aCg executive director Richard Moore (pictured right) with a real buzz about it

“The event sends out a strong message of professionalism and we are very vigorous in our approach to marketing to give everyone the best chance of doing the best business. as a result, we have an event with a real buzz about it,” said Richard. “we also have about 260 members and suppliers attending our gala dinner dance so we have plenty of fun too!”

Richard has been instrumental in the development of aCg as the UK’s fastest growing buying group which now has over 310 stores across the country. It has built up strong relationships with its suppliers so that they can work closely with retail members to get the most flexible and competitive deals.

Founded in 1985 with 32 members, aCg has enjoyed rapid growth to a collective strength of more than 300 individual members. It is a non-profit making group run as a cooperative amongst its members who pay a fixed annual subscription. aCg negotiates competitive prices, promotional discounts and percentage rebates from its suppliers and these are paid directly to retailers. Retailers are wholly independent, of course, and free to make their own arrangements and deals direct with suppliers.

Jonathan gamble at Penthouse Carpets commented: “This is an excellent show and we really appreciate the opportunity to take the time to talk to customers. we find aCg and their members are always open to new ideas and that’s important in such a competitive environment.”

Many retailers are increasing their take up of aCg own-label branding to counter competition from “internet shoppers” but the selection is up to individual stores as to how they make the best mix of merchandising to suit their business. The aCg ‘Smart Choice’ branding is supported with a whole range of marketing materials in addition to the POS displays.

Mark Rooney at edel Telenzo was launching their brand new innovative atmosphere Collection to great acclaim and said: “The venue for this event is smart and modern and is just the right setting for an industry that wants to look relevant to today’s consumers.”

from The Stocklists

“Retailers tend to be fiercely independent and our job is to improve their profitability whilst respecting the way they want to run their business. as you would expect, they would not remain members unless there were strong reasons to do so,” said Richard. T 01942 825520

NEWS water way to go

Beaulieu International group (B.I.g.) reports that its global multimodal logistics platform which uses waterway transport to reduce its dependency on truck transport reduced the company’s container transport-related CO2 emissions by 36% in 2017 and is scheduled to achieve a further 55% reduction in the coming years.

Since the start of the programme in 2015, it has grown substantially and now 60% of B.I.G.’s output by container is transported via barges starting at the River Terminal Wielsbeke (RTW). The RTW acts as B.I.G.’s global inland hub, connecting the company to major shipping routes and destinations around the world via the Port of Antwerp. Previously all container cargo went by truck to the Port of Antwerp, a distance of 90 km. By changing to water transport, journey times have become more reliable as traffic congestion doesn’t have to be factored in; there are fewer trucks on the roads reducing traffic for other road users; and the company’s CO2 emissions have fallen. In 2017 the company shipped 3,000 containers via combined road + barge transport, reducing CO2 emissions by 300 tonnes, compared with pure road transport.

In fact, our target is to increase barge use by 10% this year and barge capacity is planned to increase from 60 to 90 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) in the coming years.” T 0032 56 62 59 00 www.bintg.com

Five collections offer a total of 40 designs, in wood and tile effects, with matching four-sided bevelled edges and a complete range of matching WPC vinyl-wrapped accessories. The new waterproof WPC engineered vinyl floor is a phthalate-free wood plastic composition design with a robust construction, measuring 7mm to 8.5mm in thickness and comprising seven individual layers. These combined features provide a flooring option that’s fast to install, can be laid over most existing hard floor coverings and which is compatible with ‘wet’ underfloor heating systems. Boards lock together to create a highly durable and dimensionally stable surface that also offers acoustic impact sound performance up to 24db. As well as performance benefits, PRO-TEK WPC’s construction brings considerable time–saving benefits. Minimal floor preparation and the product’s integral underlay cut installation time dramatically. Abingdon Let’s twist again!

History repeats itself on the abingdon stand at Harrogate this year as Stainfree Twist, a carpet that re-defined the industry 30 years ago, is re-born with even stronger performance credentials. “It is true to say that the original Stainfree Twist was the first of its kind when launched in 1990, it revolutionised the industry,” said Martin Peace of Abingdon. “We went head-to-head with wool twist, and the rest, as they say, is history.” He recalls how Abingdon reps impressed retailers back then by scribbling on the carpet with crayon to show how easily it cleaned up. Even more remarkable is that 30 years ago, Stainfree Twist was selling to the trade for £3.99/yard and the new version in still only £4.99 now – and with a lot more for your money. This is a fourth-generation fibre and now in tenth-gauge with 20 colours including some modern blues, greens and greys (in the 90s there was only one grey and one beige in the range!). “We’ve made Stainfree Twist even more legendary for retailers and from the launch response so far, we are feeling confident that it will have a long future ahead of it as the industry’s go-to twist,” says Martin. The ‘cavalier’ carpet crusader Looking back on the colourful life of Gerry Lowe

The industry lost one of its most colourful characters in June with the death of Gerry Lowe, the ‘cavalier’ character who built Cavalier Carpets into one of the sector’s best performing businesses. Although Gerry, had not been involved in the company for 10 years following his retirement, his mercurial drive, energy and inspiration laid foundations that developed an impressive international operation from his start on the Manchester market stalls. Gerry was born in 1945, one of four children, and started working life as a traveling salesman in South Manchester before getting involved with a carpet shop in Stockport selling remnants and rolls. During the 60s, Gerry would take a van load of carpets around the markets, a few years later he was already branching out – running a wholesale business and even buying yarn to have made up into carpet. The move that was to make his reputation came in 1971 when he saw the opportunity to buy a tiny carpet manufacturing firm in Darwen, near Blackburn, called Cavalier Carpets – the proud owner of a single tufting machine. And the rest is history!... Gerry grew the business throughout the 70s and 80s, manufacturing for retailers, then launching into the contract sector and adding an export business. The operation grew and moved into Blackburn. “There will be some who remember Gerry’s early days at the Harrogate show when, wearing his hallmark white suit, he would wheel and deal,” said his son, Hans Lowe. “He cut a colourful character and he drove a hard bargain!” An example of one of his most innovative developments was the start of the company’s involvement in the insurance business in 2000. “At the time no one understood what this was about and thought Gerry was losing the plot.Thankfully, he had the confidence to follow his conviction,” said Hans. “And today, Cavalier has a pre-eminent reputation in this sector.” Other earlier expansions included the acquisition of Trafford Carpets in Manchester and Traditional Weavers in Birmingham, and the launch of a significant logistics business Transfloor that serves more than a dozen leading flooring manufacturers. “Gerry was ambitious and fully focussed on what he wanted to achieve. He didn’t let much stand in his way,” said Hans. “He had nerves of steel and was prepared to take a chance – he put his money where his mouth was. He invested intensively and while not everything worked out, many things did, and in some style. “In many ways he was an uncompromising character but one whose charm and personality won much admiration across the industry and in many other walks of life,” he added. Gerry, as many will attest, certainly knew how to relax and enjoy himself and away from work had an interest in several reacehorses and a local shoot. His three sons are now all involved with the family business – Nathan as MD, Hans as sales director and Julian as production director. Daughter Amanda managed to avoid the flooring industry for a role in teaching.

“ There will be some who remember Gerry’s early days at the Harrogate show when, wearing his hallmark white suit, he would wheel and deal. In many ways he was an uncompromising character but one whose charm and personality won much admiration across the industry and in many other walks of life.”

The family asked The Stocklists to thank on their behalf all those who had sent so many messages of condolence and support for which they have been extremely grateful.

Gerry enjoyed some of the good things in life - he worked hard and played hard - and was a keen follower of horse-racing, with joint ownshership stakes in several horses. THE STOCKLISTS August 2018

Star-shaped success

Overseas ambitions

F. Ball and Co. ltd has underlined the importance of its international markets by hosting its first ‘overseas distributor conference’ at the company’s Staffordshire manufacturing headquarters. F. Ball’s international business has grown tenfold since 2004.

almost 100 submissions have been made to the Flooring Innovation awards 2018 – the major new awards scheme to recognise innovation in the flooring industry which was launched in May.

The two-day event was attended by 16 principals from a selection of the company’s international distributors and customers based in regions as diverse as Africa,The Middle East, Eastern and Western Europe, and The Caribbean.

Awards scheme organiser Bridgette Kelly commented: “We have been delighted with the level of interest the industry has shown in the new scheme and by the quality of the submissions. It is clear that the flooring sector is full of innovation right now and there’s a lot of enthusiasm to shout about it!”

As well as sending a positive message to its distributor partners about the importance of their position in serving international customers, the conference was designed to enhance delegates’ awareness of the sales and technical support offered by F. Ball and improve product knowledge through a series of practical product demonstrations.

The National Flooring Innovation Awards 2018 sets out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional in the sector and the Innovation Stars will quickly be recognised as a key credential in the industry - with a distinctive star logo that can be used on promotions. Award categories not only cover flooring products, but also recognise achievements in service, technology and marketing.

Delegates were also afforded the opportunity to meet key personnel from different departments within F. Ball, including technical service, marketing, sales, accounts and operations. An in-depth tour of the Cheddleton manufacturing facilities and quality control laboratories enabled delegates to witness the state-of-the-art production and product testing operations that underpin the quality of F. Ball products.

Entries close on July 31. Judging will take place in August by a panel of industry leaders including SMG Chairman Chris Moffat, Martin West, formerly head of Kingsmead and now MD of William Armes, Deborah Barker, Editor-in-Chief of Homes & Gardens, as well as Bridgette Kelly and David Spragg, editorial director of the scheme’s media sponsor, The Stocklists. The award winners will be announced at the beginning of September and then ten exceptional “Innovation Gold” titles will be handed out at the Harrogate show. Look out for the announcements in the September issue of this magazine. www.flooringinnovationawards.com

Flooring in the frame

The programme included a series of formal presentations, covering key aspects of the business including marketing, production and floorcovering manufacturer liaison. F. Ball currently exports directly to over 40 countries worldwide, with other indirect exports via UK distributors. Following an intensive first day, delegates were entertained in the evening with a trip to Uttoxeter Racecourse to enjoy horseracing, accompanied by a meal and music from former Spice Girl, Mel C. George Agyemang from Kova Global Concepts Ltd of Ghana and Nigeria, one of the delegates who attended the conference, said: “The conference organised by F. Ball was a wonderful initiative and very worthwhile for us as distributors. Being able to meet so many people in the company helps you see how everything works and the level of back up we have as distributors. The technical presentations and demonstrations of F. Ball’s many products were invaluable in building our product knowledge.” T 01538 361 633

NEWS Fine tuning from altro

Brand new altro Orchestra soft vinyl flooring is proving a big hit with pupils at The lanner Primary School, in Cornwall, who have reported a significant improvement in acoustics and comfort. The Acting Head Teacher, said: “We fitted new Altro Orchestra flooring in the main school hall to reduce reverberation and boost overall comfort, and we are delighted with the results. The children have told us that it’s more comfortable to sit on than the flooring it replaced, and that the acoustics in the hall are much better.” Altro Orchestra has been engineered to create the ideal environment to learn and live, specifically for applications such as schools and hospitals where comfort and sound reduction are paramount. For primary schools such as Lanner, the new flooring offers the ultimate flexible, multi-purpose surface that can be used for both study and play areas throughout the school. At 2.85mm thick, Altro Orchestra offers superb comfort underfoot, making life easier on the feet of both pupils and staff and, as the children have reported, it’s very comfortable to sit on too. In addition, the low residual indentation of the flooring means furniture and equipment can be used and moved flexibly without leaving tell-tale marks. At the same time, the integrated impact sound insulation system cuts impact sound by up to 15dB. Specifying an acoustic flooring option, instead of a standard floor covering, can therefore improve the performance of space for children and those with hearing difficulties, and aid concentration, in addition to creating a more effective learning environment for teachers and support staff. With a palette of 40 colours and designs varying from calming neutrals reflecting tones of nature, to vibrant shades, Altro Orchestra allows the right atmosphere to be created every time. Lanner School selected the shade Guitar, a subtle green that creates a calm atmosphere. T 01462 489516

Beer’s ahead while floors are flat!

a boost in retail sales for beer, barbeques and big screen TVs during the sunny, sporty summer has done little for flooring sales so far according to analysts and industry commentators are reporting flat business in the furniture sector.

Record temperatures, the world cup and Wimbledon all contributed to taking consumers eye off the ball as far as interiors purchases are concerned and according to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total in-store like-for-like sales were down by -1.7% in June compared to 2017. The result marked the fifth successive month of negative in-store growth and the ninth month in a row where in-store growth has failed to exceed 1%. Whether all this adds up to a lack of appetite for big ticket household purchases or is just delaying pent-up demand to the busy Autumn sales season is the perennial debate but a separate report from the British Retail Consortium came with a gloomy comment from their chief executive Helen Dickenson: “With household incomes still barely growing faster than inflation, conditions for consumers and retailers remain extremely tough. And things could get tougher: once the euphoria of sporting success subsides, without a deal on Brexit, shoppers face the prospect of significant price increases and shortages of everyday goods. Paul Martin, Head of Retail, KPMG, commented: “Grocers benefitted from the brighter weather and of course the World Cup, with barbeques and picnics firmly on the menu, and the weather and holiday season are also likely to be behind the uptick in online fashion sales too. But with so much attention outdoors, other household categories didn’t fare exceptionally well.”

Carpetright confident after £71m loss

Carpetright is planning an autumn ‘brand re-launch’ and a stronger push into hard flooring as the company declares confidence in its recovery plan, despite annual results which saw last year's profit of £1m plunge into the red with losses of £70.5m for the year ended 28 april 2018.

UK sales were down 5.4% overall and 7.8% down in the second half after news of its problems and consequent re-structuring became public and discouraged some consumers – the company also blamed stock shortages after saying some suppliers had withdrawn supply. Now Carpetright is firm about its future with a £65m refinancing packaging and landlords agreeing a 50% cut in rents under a CVA agreement and a store closure programme agreed for under-performing sites. "[This] offers us the chance to rebuild Carpetright which remains the clear market leader in floor coverings," said Wilf Walsh, Chief Executive. "For almost thirty years we've satisfied more customers than any other flooring retailer - so here's to thirty more as the nation's favourite," he said. Carpetright says it is planning a major brand re-launch in the Autumn to reassure consumers and overcome this year’s bad press. The company’s report noted that 227 stores in the UK have undergone the new “contemporary Graphite store-fit” with new branding and that these 58 August 2018

stores have been proven to out-perform older outlets by 9.2%. All UK stores will have completed some level of overhaul by the end of this year. Other marketing initiatives will include an increasing emphasis on hard flooring to match market trends and extending the number of products across all smooth categories from vinyl through to engineered wood. Carpetright will be promoting their own new Tegola label in this sector. The company also revealed some interesting statistics about store performance and its deal with landlords. Its 195 ‘Category A’ sites average £22,500 sales a week and have not been the subject of any deal with landlords under the CVA agreement. In ‘Category B’, another 82 stores which average £13,200 sales weekly got a 30% reduction from landlords and 31 stores with £12,200 sales weekly got a 50% reduction. Finally is a ‘Category C’ in which 81 stores don’t make a profit on average sales of £11,500 weekly. Their rent-to-sales ratio is 29% and while landlords have given a 50% reduction, these stores’ future is uncertain.

Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

Desire for natural products boosts wood flooring This month’s feature looks at the topic of wood flooring, which has long been established as providing an attractive and easy care option for all areas of the house.

Furlong Flooring states that the popularity of wood and engineered wood flooring is rising in the UK and this has much to do with its sustainability and durability, providing a classic elegance and creating a sophisticated feel to a room.

advances in technology are giving consumers a generous variety of colours and styles, such as the company’s Herringbone range, with each design bringing its own unique character. They are also great value for money as they are made from long-lasting material and often come with warranties such as Furlong’s current best-selling product, next Step 189, which has a residential guarantee of 20 years. designed for use with underfloor heating, it is quick and easy to install with a factory finish, meaning no sanding and no mess. wood is easy to clean and maintain, made even easier with the company’s woca kits and stain bottles to keep flooring looking its best, the company concludes.

The Reclaimed Flooring Company (RFC) explains that engineered wooden flooring is an attractive alternative to solid wood and is moisture resistant, suitable for underfloor heating and easy to install.

Its own products consist of layers of high-quality european birch ply bonded with a natural, formaldehyde, eU-compliant glue. It offers a wide range of colours and finishes and combines practicality with affordability.

The possibilities are endless for engineered wood flooring, the company continues. From the wide selection of colours and tones to different plank sizes, each piece is individually crafted with clients’ desires in mind.

“we currently offer over 30 colours available as engineered floors. The range encompasses not only regular planks but wide-planks,Versailles panels, herringbone, chevron and reclaimed products,” says RFC owner and creator Robert J Henry. “and we’re constantly working to bring you new products to give you even more choice to transform your home or business.” Xylo Flooring specialises in oak engineered wood flooring and says this stands out for all the right reasons: beautiful natural colouring; smooth to the touch; a distinctive grain that makes it more appealing; and it is also one of the most resilient timbers available.

from The Stocklists

“...wood flooring technology has advanced to the point where it now offers a better, stronger and more comfortable, affordable and reliable flooring option, proven over the passage of time and through enthusiastic customer feedback”

“we offer different finishes including Staining, Smoking, Hand Scraping and Brushing with both UV Oiled and UV lacquered finishes,” the company states. “each applied finish makes our floors unique and suitable for a great many settings whether at home or in business.

“In our colour palate this year we have introduced calming pastel shades of greys, soft beiges and earth colours in our Oak collections all proving very popular. There has also been a trend we have responded to for alternate width planks from a very slim 70mm to an extra wide 300mm and each will make a room take on its own personality,” it concludes.

YTD says wood flooring technology has advanced to the point where it now offers a better, stronger and more comfortable, affordable and reliable flooring option, proven over the passage of time and through enthusiastic customer feedback.

The installation of a wood floor within a property provides it with a notable feature that becomes a vivid part of the house. wooden flooring has emerged as a luxury, bespoke product with which no other flooring option can compete, showing a finish and colouring tailored to the customer’s own desires, the company continues.

Having been established for over 10 years,YTd states that its 14mm and 20mm products continue to be its best sellers, with oiled products proving to be the most popular finish in the UK.

duralay underlays for lVT create the perfect installation

Interfloor has developed a specialist collection of duralay underlays and adhesives designed to make luxury vinyl tiles (lVT) even more comfortable underfoot and to ensure the tiles look good for longer. The new LVT underlays are quick to fit, easy to work with, and help to reduce the need for sub-floor preparation and damage to flooring due to uneven sub-floors. The LVT adhesives are suitable for single stick, double-stick or for directly sticking LVT to the sub-floor. Duralay LVT Multi-Fit Underlay can be fitted loose lay, single stick or double-stick depending upon installation requirements and provides increased underfoot comfort and improved noise reduction. It also provides an excellent sub-floor, masking minor surface imperfections, and helping prevent the overstraining of joints. Duralay Multi-Fit underlay is particularly suited to larger areas and commercial installations. Duralay LVT Low-Grab Underlay is a versatile solution which can be used to install ‘click system’ luxury vinyl tiles. The underlay is loose-laid over the sub-floor or existing flooring significantly reducing sub-floor preparation times and the new flooring is positioned and laid onto the underlay’s unique low grab backing, holding the tiles in position preventing movement during and after installation. Duralay LVT Dry-Back Underlay can be used to install ‘dry back’ luxury vinyl tiles. A release film is peeled back to expose the pre-applied adhesive, the new flooring is then positioned and pressed onto the underlay’s unique high grab backing. The adhesive allows an open time whereby tiles or planks can be lifted and re-positioned.

new high-end edgings for luxury installations Interfloor has introduced new premium edgings offering a top-quality addition to its existing Gripperrods range. The new Premier floor edgings are available in two modern finishes that will complement the current trends in luxury home accessories. The Premier range includes a very on-trend brushed steel nickel or an elegant bright chrome which will co-ordinate well with other home accessories, light switches and door handles to ensure a seamless finish. Both finishes are available in six specialist trims designed to provide the perfect solution for all types of flooring. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 62

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 66

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS August 2018

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

THE STOCKLISTS August 2018

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.flooringone.co.uk Mandy Powell Tel: 0121 683 1426 mandy.powell@flooringone.co.uk

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS August 2018

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types Tip Sheared

Random Sheared

Level Loop

Multi-Level Loop

Tufted with advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. a heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. a wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

THE STOCKLISTS August 2018

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 73
