SUPER SOFT CARPET SAVING SEA LIFE

Sedna® carpet is soft, luxurious and durable. It is made with ECONYL® regenerated nylon, a yarn made from recycled waste material such as old carpets and abandoned fishing nets collected from the bottom of the sea. Sedna® thus helps to save thousands of beautiful sea creatures like sea turtles, dolphins and seals that will no longer get stuck in this life-threatening waste. Moreover, Sedna® carpet has an ECO FusionBac textile back, made from 100% recycled PET plastic bottles.

RANGES Sedna® carpet comes in two alluring ranges, inspired by the mysterious depths of the seas. All over the world, the seas and oceans are worshipped through deities that personify their grandeur.

Feature

Fitness at its core!

Speed and performance at the heart of wellbeing centre. The prestigious Soo Yoga centre for fitness and wellbeing provided the perfect challenge to demonstrate the advanced credentials of UltraCore luxury rigid core flooring from Brampton Chase. Soo Yoga celebrity founders Ben Cohen and Kristina Rihanoff needed a versatile flooring solution that could overcome several issues, whilst delivering an elegant finish to complement their sophisticated brand.

Luxury Click-fit Planks

“ UltraCore offered us exactly what we needed. Easy, low maintenance floors that look stunning” Ben Cohen MBE, Founder of Soo Yoga

Ben Cohen of Soo Yoga (left) is pictured with David Gowling of Brampton Chase The centre in Northampton needed performance flooring across 1000m2 of mixed environments including a spinning room, hot yoga studio, treatment rooms, dance studio, changing rooms, restaurant, crèche and soft play area. “We honed in on the fast pace of the project, limited timescale, existing subfloor challenges and the most important requirement of having a beautiful, natural looking high performance floor,” said David Gowling, Managing Director of Brampton Chase. “With multiple trades working on site simultaneously the flooring installation process couldn’t hinder overall progress. The UltraCore flooring range with its 5G click system enabled large areas to be installed quickly – the 75m2w dance studio was fitted in just four hours!” Soo Yoga was delighted. “UltraCore offered us exactly what we needed. Easy, low maintenance floors that look stunning,” said Ben Cohen. “Having the flexibility to use the same flooring through so many different areas and rooms is a massive plus. They’ve worked fantastically with our installation team on site to make the project run smoothly.” The key to speed was UltraCore’s rigid construction which meant that minimal sub-floor preparation was required – in many case fitting was achieved directly over the existing hard floors. The product’s 100% waterproof performance and high stability meant it could be used throughout the site in different decors including Traditional Oak, Natural Oak, Colorado and Banff with a superior realistic wood grain embossed surface. Carpet&FlooringReview Charming carpets The Charm Collection is the latest addition to the StainSafe range from Balta carpets, bringing a fine 1/10th gauge twist pile for carpets that are wonderfully luxurious and perfect for family homes. Making Charm’s exquisite texture available in three pile weights – 900g/m2 Country Charm, 1,400g/m2 Endless Charm and 1,975g/m2 Classic Charm – Balta Carpets has married the precise twist pile to its two-ply StainSafe X-Tron high-performance PP, providing the carpet with the resilience needed for family homes. With colours from a palette of 14 modern pastel tones in charcoal through hints of blush pink and clay to ivory; each Charm carpet can be chosen according to budget, or even selected for rooms based on use, keeping the same rich and luxurious look throughout. “More often than not, consumers may well opt for the same weight carpet throughout their home, regardless of whether they are putting a new carpet in a living room as well as a spare bedroom,” says Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Group. “However, as homeowners are increasingly on the hunt for better value the multiweight approach of the Charm collection is a real advantage. “With a largely shared colourbank, weight can be chosen according to room use; so the luxury and resilience of Classic Charm in living spaces and hallways, Endless Charm in master suites and Country Charm for spare bedrooms. It’s a great way for retailers to build in extra value without compromising on quality which could lead to poor performance in busy family spaces.”

Healthy theme for Hannover

Available in four and five-metre widths, the bleach-cleanable Charm collection is backed by Balta’s impressive StainSafe warranties: Classic Charm receives a 20-year stain resistant warranty, Endless Charm is given a 15-year StainSafe warranty and Country Charm has a 10-year promise. The collection is presented on its own lectern and is now available directly from Balta carpets.

The “AtMySphere” keynote theme chosen for Domotex 2020, the world’s leading trade fair for carpets and floor coverings, will shine a light on all those qualities of flooring products that contribute to people’s wellbeing. Environmentally friendly materials and manufacturing processes will be a key focus at next year’s event, which runs from 10 to 13 January.

Growing health and environmental consciousness is sparking an increasing number of interior design projects based on environmentally friendly floor coverings and installation materials. The following examples of products made by Domotex exhibitors illustrate the key role sustainable flooring products can play in innovative interior design concepts for hotels, bars and restaurants as well as showrooms, offices and even tradeshow stands. Deutsche Telekom’s flagship store in Munich’s Marienplatz square was fitted out in line with the company’s “Collector’s Lab” retail concept, which involves arranging “collector’s items” in “emotionally appealing display islands amid a high-value setting”. The objective is to create an inviting and highly personal shopping experience. The store’s flooring design employed two different resilient floor coverings made by Domotex exhibitor Windmöller. White and magenta-colored strips on an industrial-style polished concrete floor draw the visitor’s gaze to various product displays. Purline organic flooring combined with wood-panel walls and comfortable upholstered furniture are used to create homely lounge and consulting areas. Purline is a high-quality polyurethane flooring solution made from ecuran, a high-performance composite material that is manufactured primarily from 2 plant-based oils such as canola oil or castor oil and naturally occurring mineral components such as chalk. “Mindful living and working are more important than ever before to consumers,” explains Annika Windmöller, Partner and Director of Corporate Communications at the Windmöller Group. “People’s strong environmental consciousness and desire to engage in sustainable consumption and maximize their personal wellbeing are key drivers for us.” www.domotex.de

B.I.G. Parquet Plant in Meaulne.

NEWS LVT upskill incentive Harvey Maria has introduced a new programme of training courses, in partnership with FloorSkills. The new two-day courses are held monthly at FloorSkills Training Centre - Europe’s largest independent training facility, based in the West Midlands – and the programme is personally supervised by leading UK trainers, Matt Bourne and Matt Bowles. Course content is tailored for forward-thinking retailers looking to ‘upskill’ their specialist fitting teams, with a focus on pattern and creativity. The new training programme has been developed in response to industry demand and growth in high end design-led LVT. Innovative patterns and lay-outs have created new fitting challenges and the course is designed to take fitters’ skills and confidence to new levels. “Given that many of our most eye-catching designs require more attention to detail than just about any other LVT, the course represents a great opportunity to upskill. It’s been noticeable that many of the more experienced fitters have given the most positive feedback - I’m convinced that it’s a real game changer,” explained Harvey Maria’s Founder, Mark Findlay. During day one, the course focuses on installation of designer patterns, borders and inlays. Then, during the second day, there’s a focus on creativity and what can be achieved using a wide range of Harvey Maria designs. All those attending must already be familiar with the principals of LVT installation and have completed formal subfloor preparation training; this enables the course to concentrate on the specific installation requirements of a Harvey Maria floor. The course also explores the use of the correct adhesives, as well as the required cleaning and care methods. Lunch and refreshments are provided throughout the two-day programme - and fitters receive certification, as well as the addition of ‘Trained Fitter’ status alongside their Harvey Maria web listing.

To find out more about the course and dates, please visit www.floorskills.co.uk/courses/all-training-courses/course/229/harvey-maria-lvt-course/ For more information and testimonials, read the blog at http://blog.harveymaria.co.uk/company-news/the-art-of-installation/ T 0330 330 1231 www.harveymaria.com

Safety status success Beaulieu International Group (B.I.G.) has 29 plants all over the world and has announced its operation in Meaulne, France, manufacturing parquet which has been accorded the ‘Highly Protected Risk’ (HPR) status by insurer FM Global. HPR status means the plant meets the most stringent fire prevention and protection demands there can be. The B.I.G. factory at Meaulne annually produces 1.5 million square meters of parquet flooring that is sold under its Berry Wood brand, itself part of the larger BerryAlloc brand. These figures make B.I.G. France’s biggest producer of wood-engineered parquet. “Because we work with wood, fire safety is one of the most important prevention duties that we have – to our people, our products, our machinery and to the environment,” says Jean-Marc Legrand, Director of Berry Wood. FM Global, Beaulieu International Group’s (B.I.G.) industrial property and business interruption insurer since 2016, created the HPR status as a unique concept that demonstrates strongly reduced exposure to loss and increased business resilience. A dedicated worldwide team of engineers focuses on providing assistance and protection of B.I.G.’s assets, helping the Group to achieve a higher level of risk protection. The Meaulne site is the fourth B.I.G. factory to receive HPR status and the third in Europe. It scored exceptionally well in its FM Global assessment which focused on aspects including fire protection, protection against natural hazards , mechanical breakdown of machinery and cyber risks. Its overall risk mark of 76 ranks it within the world’s top 25% of the wood product manufacturing industry for fire risk prevention and protection. www.bintg.com

NEWS Sustainable strength Commercial and residential vinyl flooring specialist Polyflor, has recently published its 14th annual Sustainability Report which outlines the UK manufacturer’s environmental performance over the past year. The 114-page report gives a detailed account of the sustainability milestones that Polyflor reached in 2018, delves into the company’s green credentials and explains how Polyflor is fully committed to producing environmentally preferable flooring, with a focus on sustainability through the 6-step life cycle process. The report also highlights Polyflor’s involvement with charities and the local community. Key achievements for 2018 include improvements to resource management, where Polyflor used 84% renewable energy and 96% recycled water. Energy usage was reduced by 16%, the lowest figure in 7 years and direct and indirect greenhouse emissions were reduced by 13% and 32% respectively, compared to 2017. Polyflor’s carbon footprint was further reduced through improvements made by its logistics department, including increasing driver efficiencies and bulk loads, leading to reduced fuel consumption. As co-founder of the Recofloor vinyl take-back scheme, Polyflor reports that a record 570 tonnes of post-consumer waste vinyl flooring was collected in the past year, totalling 4,341 tonnes since 2009 – enough waste to cover 203 football pitches.

Polyflor is the first flooring manufacturer to obtain the BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing standard with an Excellent rating, proving that materials for its flooring collections are sourced responsibly and that Polyflor is sustainably accountable. Polyflor’s products also contain up to 85% natural material and up to 40% recycled material. Polyflor’s Manufacturing Director, Steve Mulholland, commented, “As a UK manufacturer, we recognise that we have a responsibility to minimise our environmental impact and make sustainability a priority in our operations on a local and global level. With hard work and commitment, we will continue to make improvements to our manufacturing plants, processes and logistics wherever possible to continuously strengthen our sustainability performance. We have already made great progress but we continue to set ambitious environmental goals and are determined to carry on leading the way with our sustainability agenda in the vinyl flooring market.“ T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

Invictus is the new force in luxury vinyl tile flooring as Associated Weavers goes all out with a major investment and a class-leading campaign to replicate the success of its carpet brands

Associated Weavers is demonstrating its serious commitment to the sector with the simultaneous launch of a range of 100% matching scotias for edge finishing, feature grout strips and a smart, consumer cleaning pack. “We did not want to launch Invictus until we had everything in place, without any compromise,” said national sales manager Jonathan Davies. “That has taken time but now we have everything right and we’re eager and ready to go.” Invictus is rolling out to retailers in July and August and there is a new, dedicated national sales team for luxury vinyl tile. Jonathan mentioned that AW ended up with an unprecedented 72 applicants for the remaining two sales jobs in the team. “The number of top quality people wanting to work with AW on this shows the interest in the LVT sector and the strength of the AW and Invictus brand,” he said.

The move will disrupt the highly successful and growing luxury vinyl tile market in the UK as a new major player with substantial resources and a proven track record of driving brands into retail best-sellers joins the competition. Associated Weavers transformed the soft carpet sector in 2015 with the launch of the Invictus brand – a new generation of performance polypropylene that quickly became a favourite with retailers and consumers. The company makes no excuse for launching its luxury vinyl tile collection under the same brand name describing it as “a perfect match” for the carpet range – “Invictus” is latin for “invincible”. “Invictus carpet became a best-seller overnight so the brand was an obvious choice to drive the new LVT business with the same standards of comfort and performance,” said Gavin Pugh, UK managing director. “Invictus has earned a huge reputation as a brand across the UK and retailers who take that trust into developing their smooth flooring business will not be disappointed,” he says. 30 August 2019

Flooring champions The debut of Associated Weavers into the LVT market was marked by an impressive launch event to retailers and buying groups at the company’s HQ in Halifax where an extensive, purpose-built showroom has been created for the Invictus collection. The company also announced that it was setting up a new Academy at this location whose mission is to “turn sales staff into flooring champions” by developing a greater understanding of both vinyl and carpets to develop better marketing and sales techniques.

The Invictus in-store presentation

Innovative consumer engagement AW aims to set Invictus apart with class-leading in-store presentation, state-of-the-art interactive POS and web tools and unprecedented level of attention to internet and social media marketing. “There is major focus on the online support – we guarantee we will bring more people to your store,” said Emmanuel Lioen, marketing and corporate communications manager. The company undertook extensive market research over the last 18 months with more than 50 retailers to develop the collection and its stunning POS display. The display unit is 3.9m wide with detachable swing-arm displays and is packed with features including a specially-lit presentation area and a sophisticated touch-screen display system.

Extensive showrooms have been created in Halifax

The touch-screen sets a new standard for interactive sales presentation. This “Invictus Flooring Adviser” scans samples from the display and brings them to life on screen, showing them in a gallery of room sets that the consumer or retailer can select – even allowing side-by-side comparisons. The same highly engaging, interactive technology is used in the all-new Invictus website which covers both the LVT and carpet products. The launch presentation attracted a lot of attention

Innovation goes global PRO-TEK WPC has extended its business into South America and the United Arab Emirates, with expansion into other international and European markets to follow later this year. New markets include Peru, Chile and Dubai, where the full range of PRO-TEK WPC engineered vinyl floors will be offered, alongside matching accessories. Since its launch at The Flooring Show last September, the PRO-TEK WPC brand has established itself as the new, alternative flooring option, offering the aesthetic of a natural-effect LVT, with additional practical and acoustic benefits. Its engineered construction has a waterproof wood plastic composite core and an IXPE foam underlay base, which gives acoustic impact sound performance up to 24db. Lighter and more pliable than a stone composite, the floor has a robust design which enhances its performance on uneven floors. “Heritage has been really popular with customers looking to achieve the original character of elegant period interiors or for creating a contemporary statement look. Perfect for busy rooms where highly durable flooring is required, Karndean’s Heritage Collection reinvents historical style with all the benefits of luxury vinyl tiles, offering a practical choice for an on-trend, modern floor.”

Kaleidoscope recently welcomed two new designs inspired by traditional Moroccan and medieval Spanish architecture. The eye-catching tiles, Casablanca and Marrakesh, are inspired by the artistic techniques of traditional Moroccan architecture, brought to the Iberian Peninsula during the 8th Century. One creative design, available in two subtle yet striking colourways, offers a modern interpretation of these iconic patterns with a non-uniform, patchwork arrangement that incorporates a stylish combination of geometric forms, curves and crests. Casablanca shows off this quirky design in a monochrome palette of grey shades to create a contemporary statement while Marrakesh uses a mix of natural earthy colour tones for a warmer, more playful look. News Feature Back to the future

Metro celebrates four decades of success in 70s style Metro members relived the 70s in a sensational anniversary gala in Warwickshire that celebrated the group’s four decades of success in supporting flooring retailers. “40 years is a great achievement by our members,” said Board member Peter Lynas. “Hard working members with an entrepreneurial spirit but also with a great sense of camaraderie has held us together all these years.” Shaun Lewis of Brockway Carpets congratulated the group on behalf of its suppliers: “It’s a pleasure to celebrate with Metro whose success is based on the quality of the membership which is second to none, its quality leadership and, of course, top quality suppliers!” After the speeches, it was over to ABBA – or an excellent Scandinavian tribute band at least – to start the party in style and rekindle the excitement of 1979, the year Metro was started.

“ Hard working members with an entrepreneurial spirit but also with a great sense of camaraderie has held us together all these years.”

Pictured left to right are Sean Lewis of Brockway, Peter Lynas, A Board member of Metro, Ray Chiltern, Chair of the Metro Board, the membership and “ABBA”! The Tickled Trout in Preston was where it all began in April, 1979, with 14 retailers present. Four of these are still members today: John Kirkpatrick of Balshaws Lancaster; Quill Tapsell of Carpet Supplies, Preston; Joe Gittins of Gittins, Neston; and Russell Davies of Horwich Carpets, Bolton.

The first suppliers that dealt with the new group were Greenwood & Coope (now Cormar) Broadloom Carpets, Forfar, Silvaseam, Thomson Sheppard and Widnells. Underlay was a key part of the early negotiations by the group with Uniroyal the preferred supplier.

A circular published as a result of that meeting read: “We have all been aware during recent years of the considerable strength that is to be gained from union.” The first AGM took place in June that year and Metro was up and running with John O’Brien as chairman. In 1980, the annual subscription was £250 and there were already 72 members.

Quayle Carpets was the first own-label supplier to Metro, providing for Metro Super Twist to be launched at £6.50 per square yard alongside a berber twist and loop. The suppliers list expanded in the 80s and in 1984, Ulster Carpets was the first recipient of the Top Supplier Award. By 1988, Metro had moved into its current offices in Chorley New Road, Bolton, and meeting minutes reported that a new-fangled fax machine was purchased at this time. The 1990s saw the launch of the Carpet 1st branding concept and the group produced its first wall displays and in 1999, the first supplier show took place at an AGM weekend. Developments accelerated in the new millennium including a new rebate scheme introduced by Dave Kipping who had replaced legendary Metro Chief Executive John Sylvester (whose retirement dinner at Leeds United Football Club in 2008 was a major industry event). Steve Depport joined the group in 2012 from Brintons Carpets as Operations Manager and the popular mobile merchandising service hit the road in 2014.

Metro offered a star prize of a Mini Metro (of course) worth £4,000 in a consumer promotion in 1985. 34 August 2019

NEWS Marvellous mats With entrance matting a proven way to prolong the life of commercial floor coverings, finding a range that delivers great dirt and moisture stopping performance, as well as great value, is a must for any contractor. Fortunately, floorwise is ready to step in with a range of primary and secondary entrance matting that will stop dirt and moisture in their tracks, protecting newly-installed floor coverings and helping them to stay looking great for longer. For intensive-use applications, such as those encountered in shopping centres and large entertainment complexes, floorwise’s high-performance nylon mats provide extra reassurance by removing left-over dirt and moisture. Using nylon for its resilience and easy cleanability; Viking, Alba and Granati are designed to work like a soft brush, removing the last remaining grit and moisture before soles hit carefully selected entrance floors. Offering three different heathered looks for maximum soil disguise, the heavyweight mats come with a PVC backing for easy uplift and cleaning. With the super-scrub performance of Mat Rib and the innovative nondirectional Mat Noppa – each in a range of highly-usable colours – floorwise also has versatile, value-driven contract-grade matting ready to stop dirt at door entrances. The coarse-grade fibres used trap soil and particles with ease and with high moisture wicking properties, these gel-backed mats are also great at removing excess water from soles across a range of commercial locations.

The stars are coming out! More than 130 submissions have now been made to the Flooring Innovation Awards 2019 – outperforming the huge success of the launch of the scheme last year! FIA organiser Bridgette Kelly commented: “Our first year caught the imagination of the industry in 2018 but we are really pleased to see that the enthusiasm has been sustained with an even larger response this year. “The quality of entries is very high indeed and it’s very encouraging to see that the industry is so active in bringing forward new ideas and innovations that drive the economic success that this sector needs to thrive,” she said. The national Flooring Innovation Awards set out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional in the sector and the Innovation Stars are recognised as a key credential in the industry. Award categories not only cover flooring products, but also recognise achievements in service, technology and marketing. Entries closed on July 19 and judging will take place in August by a panel of industry leaders including SMG Chairman Chris Moffat; Deborah Barker, former Editor-in-Chief of Homes & Gardens; Laurence Bird of Carpet Recycling UK; carpet consultant John Hopkins; as well as Bridgette Kelly and David Spragg, editorial director of the scheme’s media sponsor, The Stocklists magazine.

For those wanting a more traditional look that’s perfect for country hotels, pubs and boutique shops, there’s also Java Mat, a synthetic coir contract-grade mat in flat or rib textures and available in 1m and 2m widths. In fact, floorwise also stocks genuine coir matting at branches throughout the UK and Ireland. These mat solutions from floorwise deliver contract environments the dirt and moisture busting performance needed to keep floorcoverings looking their best. Platinum, polished

ACG showcases the strength of its members’ buying power “The members not only come to events to see us, but more importantly they come to meet each other and find out what’s really happening out there,” said ACG executive director Richard Moore. “The financial incentives are obviously first and foremost why retailers join ACG, but we are very much a people business.” The event creates a focus for promotions and incentives, many of which are exclusive to those who attend the show and it is well supported by some 23 suppliers. “We have developed great relationships with suppliers who have invested strongly in supporting this event to provide an ideal platform to do better business.,” adds Richard.

ACG’s Platinum event offered a polished performance at the stunning lakeside location on the campus of the University of Warwick. The annual ACG exhibition, AGM and gala dinner, now in the second year at Warwick, demonstrated the group’s attractive approach to mixing business with pleasure for its members. The event was also a showcase of the latest suppliers’ launches and Group promotions. Highlights included the arrival of Lano and Phoenox Rugs as new supplier partners, new LVT offers from Furlong Flooring and Distinctive and the debuts of the Sedna recycled nylon yarn from Associated Weavers, Abingdon’s extra soft Sophisticat, Hugh Mackay’s Quintessential Twist and the latest from Cormar. New IT solutions for flooring visualisation, business management and payment systems were also on show. Steve Byrne at Abingdon Flooring described the ACG show as a “very focused event for retailers who are serious about their business.” Jeremy Wilson of Ulster Carpets agrees: “This is an excellent show in an idyllic location which is very professionally organised but has an intimate feel among retailers who understand the importance of relationships in business.”

40 August 2019

“There are still some people who are unsure about the buying group experience – they value their independence and often think they’re already getting the best deal,” said Richard. “We encourage these retailers to talk to our members directly so that they can get it first-hand how they can keep all of their independence while doing an even better deal with their suppliers.”

“ The financial incentives are obviously first and foremost why retailers join ACG, but we are very much a people business.” That independence is underwritten by the unique way in which ACG organises its operation. Unlike some buying groups, all rebates are paid directly to members from the group suppliers. This maximises a significant return on membership fees without making any changes to their business. “Our job is to broker the best possible deal with all the top suppliers on products we know to be reliable best sellers based on the combined buying strength of more than 310 member stores,” says Richard. “Then we step away and let retailers trade direct and handle the transaction themselves in their usual way.” The Group’s own revenues come from members’ subscriptions – set at an amount that guarantees you’ll get it back in rebates, and quickly says ACG.

SPECIAL REPORT “ I have always been very confident that ACG can source me the best deals –they are a

100% committed to doing the best for their members.”

Richard Creaser of Scarborough Flooring Limited, an ACG Director, has been a member since 2007. “I have always been very confident that ACG can source me the best deals – they are a 100% committed to doing the best for their members. And you always feel you are among friends here.”

Phil Dyer of Trade Carpets Grantham has been a member for about six years.

Richard (left) is pictured with Jeremy Wilson of Ulster Carpets.

Phil (left) is pictured with Vince Holden of Hugh Mackay Carpets.

“Not only do the rebates improve my margins but ACG have helped me, as a stockist, get hold of the cut lengths I need and to source products that might be difficult to obtain in my territory. I always get the feeling they listen to what I say.”

Toby and Nigel King of Kings Floors in Newark were recommended to ACG by another retailer and are delighted they joined eight years ago. “Frankly, you’re daft not to be in it. There are lots of rewards and we really like the fact that we are protected by having most of our store presented as the own label Smart Choice.” Toby is pictured left with Nigel.

Roy and Julia Sargeant run a business at Bognor Regis and have been part of ACG for four years. “This is much better than being on your own,” said Roy. “You are not constantly under pressure to be fighting for the best price from suppliers – a good margin is guaranteed.” Like many members, Roy has a high proportion of his store dressed in the ACG Smart Choice brand to help him beat price comparators and internet window shoppers.

“ We have developed great

relationships with suppliers who have invested strongly in supporting this event to provide an ideal platform to do better business.” ACG Executive Director Richard Moore (pictured left with ACG chairman Mike Sutton, far left) T 01942 825520 www.acgcarpets.com from The Stocklists

Marketing insights Contemporary Classics This month we take a look at new designs styles which have become classics in their own right and rediscover a few old favourites that have been reinvented to fit today’s interiors.

Victoria Carpets – Habberley

Mid-century modern style makes use of clean lines, geometric shapes, and furniture with tapered legs - ideal for showing off your flooring design. Paint colours range from bold brights from the 1950s to sophisticated and earthy hues of the early 1960s. Pops of mustard, teals and blush pinks add refreshing bursts of colour to create a real wow factor. Adam Carpets believe that one reason why mid-century modern style is trending, is because it simplifies the complex to create designs with longevity. Their Inspirations range is a perfect example, created for modern living, the choice of two beautifully designed motifs are complemented by an easy to use dot. Inspirations was Adam Carpets first overtuft range. This technology allowed patterned wool-rich carpets to become much more accessible to consumers, which is a key characteristic of the mid-century modern era. Consumers can purchase a high quality wool-rich patterned carpet at a competitive price. Available in 4m and 5m widths, the Inspirations range, like all Adam Carpets is made in their own modern factory in Kidderminster.

underfoot. Not only is it soft to touch, it is also extremely sustainable and tough, therefore it provides a practical and hard-wearing flooring for all types and styles of homes. But don’t just take Victoria’s word for it. Habberley was recently featured in Channel 4’s George Clarke’s, Old House New Home. Handpicked to be installed in a newly refurbished Edwardian house, Habberley completed the look by providing a contemporary touch. From New Dawn to Maple Spring, the colour names really do speak for themselves. The Lyocell fibres provide Karndean Designflooring Habberley with a radiant shine – Lime Washed Oak and colour vibrance, which is showcased in 8 welcoming and refreshing beige and grey tones. Designed to complement any interior, Habberley is available in both 4 and 5 metre widths. A UK market leader in luxury vinyl flooring, Karndean Designflooring, is recognised for its classic and contemporary designs through styles such as; herringbone, chevron and geometrics.

Victoria Carpets are proving to be ‘A Cut Above the Rest’ by showcasing classic products with a contemporary twist, such as Habberley, a 4ply elegant premier loop pile carpet, made from 70% wool and 30% Tencel. So, what is Tencel? Well, it’s made from Lyocell fibres which originate in wood pulp. This organic fibre is unbelievably soft, so what better way to use it than right under your feet to give the ultimate, yet natural comfort 42 August 2019

“The eye-catching sophistication of Karndean’s herringbone flooring is guaranteed to add character and interest to your room. The striking diagonal designs offered by this versatile flooring choice will never go out of style, whether it be used standalone or alongside other interior trends.” explains Stella Coyle, national retail sales manager of Karndean Designflooring.

Leoline – Ceramica, Veneziana Karndean Designflooring have created a perfect balance between classic and contemporary style. The versatility of mixing colours, textures and patterns allows customers to delve into a brand-new style to transform their space. Incorporating a keyline or tramline border can add extra personality to their chosen floor. Stella adds, “The Heritage Collection offered by Karndean Designflooring combines classic Victorian designs with today’s trends. Available in three variations; Clifton, Lansdown and Montpellier, and ten colours, including timeless terracotta, contemporary blush pink and baby blue, it’s simple to create a stylish design that adds character to both period and modern homes. Lansdown, in particular, holds clean bold lines which are highlighted by its simple grid pattern, available in the ever so popular dove grey and lace, Lansdown is ideal for an understated yet elegant interior. This striking design reflects the historical origins of geometric tiled floors in a contemporary style.” Harvey Maria’s Organics Stone is a new collection of natural stone-effects, perfect for creating a modern rustic style. A classic design for the kitchen, bathroom or bootroom, the collection is offered in a gentle palette of natural shades. The designs can be laid to create a seamless, elegant finish or feature strips added for a classic flagstone look, but much warmer underfoot!

Harvey Maria – Organics Stone, Cambrian

“Our design and product development teams work closely together to ensure that every Leoline floor is the perfect combination of style, authenticity and performance,” “Our design and product development teams work closely together to ensure that every Leoline floor is the perfect combination of style, authenticity and performance,” says Maaike Dickx, product manager, Leoline. “In Ceramica this is demonstrated beautifully in new designs such as Cascais and Cappella; they really are exceptional in every way and make Leoline cushion vinyl floors a serious choice for design conscious homeowners.” Each Ceramica design is made authentic with Leoline’s natural look & feel surface structure, while the 2m, 3m and 4m width options keep seams to a minimum. Loose-laid in rooms up to 16m2, Ceramica really does make flooring style easy.

Organics Stone is an incredibly resilient floor that’s durable and very easy to keep spotlessly clean by sweeping, vacuuming or mopping with a neutral detergent; no harmful chemicals needed! It’s also waterproof and a lot more forgiving in term of droppages. For extra warmth on chilly days, the design can also be installed over underfloor heating. The new designs capture the natural beauty of limestone in four shades: Natural, Portland, Jurassic and Cambrian – each with an authentic mottled appearance, a flat-matt finish and a bevelled edge. A rectangular format, measuring 30.5cm x 45.7cm gives Organics Stone a gentle, heritage-inspired feel. At just 2.5mm thick, the tiles are fast and easy to lay in new rooms or existing schemes, without having to reduce door heights or risk ‘boxing-in’. Other stone-effect designs include Harvey Maria’s Organics Edge – a series of four matching tiles with a seamless square-in-a-square motif. A brand-new Leoline collection for 2019, Ceramica presents 16 designs varying from the patterned ceramic tiles of Emilia and Eleanor to the marble of Cascais and terrazzo of Cappella, each a testament to the in-house design and development process at Leoline. Making hyper-luxury instantly accessible, Ceramica brings the look of superdesirable tile surfaces and raw architectural finishes to your home with the ease and comfort of Leoline.

Featuring Superguard PU protection for a surface that’s easy to clean and resists marks and scuffs, Ceramica offers a lasting and comfortable floor that also helps to make homes quieter thanks to its special acoustic backing. Water-resistant and safe underfoot with added slip resistance, so a great choice for bathrooms as well as kitchens and living spaces, Ceramica can be used throughout the home for a floor that’s comfortable, quiet and easy.

NEWS Flatweave hits the big time With the launch of two new structured designs in 440 and 450cm widths, Louis de Poortere is taking the Haute Couture collection into extra-large territory, presenting flatweave carpets in unheralded widths with Haute Couture Design XL. ERFMI publishes new EPDs The European Resilient Flooring Manufacturers’ Institute (ERFMI) has published the latest Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) covering the full range of resilient floor coverings and updated the EPD calculator on its website. An Environmental Product Declaration is an independently-verified and registered document that provides transparent and comparable information on the environmental impact of a product throughout its lifetime. ERFMI, which represents the interests of the resilient flooring sector in Europe, worked with its members to provide data for an EU-wide Life Cycle Assessment of a broad range of flooring types and specifications. From this study, carried out by Think Step in collaboration with ERFMI and its individual members, a series of EPDs for ten types of resilient flooring was produced. Manufacturers of each flooring type within ERFMI supplied detailed information on their production processes, from raw materials to energy consumption and emissions, for evaluation by an independent third-party certifier. The EPDs, which can be downloaded from the IBU website, cover polyvinyl chloride floor coverings; Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT); safety flooring; smooth rubber floor coverings, linoleum and cork floor tiles. A key change is the division of the former printed laminate polyvinyl chloride floor coverings category into two to reflect the different product categories. The two new categories are Glued down LVT and Semi flexible LVT with mechanical locking (both EN ISO 10582). An updated fast and easy-to-use EPD calculator is available now on the ERFMI website. Users input their project description, product type and expected service life, as well as the chosen flooring product. Using this information, the EPD calculator generates within second a detailed EPD that provides all the required data to evaluate the environmental impact of the flooring material over its full life cycle. Associated Carpet Group ACG The deal broker

ACG’s uniquely independent approach to group buying will be the focus of their presentation at the Flooring Show as the organisation sets itself apart with its hands-off model of cost-effective membership. ACG ensures independent retailers continue to trade directly with their suppliers, receiving the discounts and percentage rebates that are paid directly into their own bank. ACG encourages members to support group suppliers maximising the benefits of membership. The members, of which there are now over 310, pay a small subscription which the group guarantees they will quickly recoup. “We see ourselves as the deal broker to get competitive prices plus percentage rebates from the UK’s top suppliers on behalf of our members,” says Executive Director Richard Moore. “But once we have lined up the deal, we step aside. Most of our members are fiercely independent firms and know better than us how to run their businesses.” ACG also has a class-leading programme of events and meetings which are increasingly valued by members as an opportunity to network and exchange ideas and best practice – and enjoy themselves away from the store. Kris Bailey, Managing Director says: “Everyone wants the Amazon experience now and our mission is to help flooring people meet the growing expectations of their customers.” In line with this, Computers for Flooring has announced its first IOS and Android application ‘app’. “The Fitter and Estimators Companion” This stand-alone application will revolutionise the way flooring retailers communicate and organise fitters from their Carman system. The app has the fitters/estimators live diary and can access all information relating to the job such as plans, fit sheets, diagrams and any special instructions, as well as guiding them to their destination via sat nav. Carman’s “communications add-on” has changed the way users interact with their customers. Users can now send important information to customers via SMS text message directly from Carman relating to fits, measures, deliveries, marketing, etc. Texts arrive showing the sending business’ name and not just a phone number. Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

The art of installation starts with preparation When aiming for the highest professional standards in floor installations, the best place to start is by ensuring each project has been planned and prepared in the most appropriate manner. One of the most important aspects of this is sourcing the best materials for the task, such as those listed below. F Ball and Co sales director Darren Kenyon says: “Many of our most popular products are ones with applications that stand out for their quality or extra benefits that they provide as a result of the latest advancements in technology. “These include Stopgap Fast-Track 30, a rapid-setting, rapid-drying levelling compound, which will allow floorcoverings to be installed 45 minutes after application. Stopgap 1200 Pro, which can be applied directly over old adhesive residues, is the ‘go-to’ levelling compound for flooring contractors. “Ongoing research and development has enabled F. Ball to enhance many of its best selling products. For example, carpet tile tackifier Styccobond F41 has recently been reformulated to provide increased coverage capabilities, faster drying time and increased tack and rapidcuring. Flexible tube adhesive, Stycco Flex can now be used for installing vertical flooring accessories thanks to improved plasticiser resistance.”

“...Stopgap Fast-Track 30, a rapid-setting, rapid-drying levelling compound, which will allow floorcoverings to be installed 45 minutes after application.”

Tilemaster Adhesives’ range includes a wide variety of products for all types of substrate and flooring material and time frames, manufactured in Leyland, Lancashire and designed to solve challenges faced by flooring contractors and tilers. For projects that require a ‘heavy duty’ compound, options include FineFlow 3000 – a fast-setting, water-based product that can be applied from feather-edge to 20mm in a single application – that can receive decorative vinyl and other impervious floor finishes after 24 hours, and tiles after just three hours.

“Tilemaster Adhesives’ range includes a wide variety of products for all types of substrate and flooring material and time frames.”

F Ball 1200 Pro application

Other smoothing compounds include fibre-reinforced LevelFlex – which can be poured from 2mm/50mm in one application – and gypsum-based AnhyLevel, which is 100% compatible with anhydrite/gypsum based screeds and can be applied up to 20mm in one pour. Two-part compounds include rapid-setting Pro Flow and multi-purpose Trade Flow. For a faster set, the range also includes ultra-rapid setting Rapid Level 30. Osmo UK managing director Steve Grimwood says it can be a challenge to find the most suitable adhesive for each flooring installation and selecting an appropriate product is essential to ensure the long-term performance of a wood floor and avoid costly remedial work. He describes Osmo UK MS Advance as a one component adhesive specially formulated for interior installation of bamboo, parquet block and engineered wood plank in addition to solid wood flooring. A key selling point is that it emits low levels of VOC, making it a favourable choice for environmentally aware customers. The high strength adhesive provides immediate “grab” and quickly develops to form a tenacious but elastic bond as the adhesive cures, ensuring the floor is securely fixed and suitable for use. As MS Advance does not contain water or solvents, the risk of distortion is minimal, Mr Grimwood concludes. Business news

BUSINESS NEWS

An “encouraging return to growth” was reported by top UK retailer Carpetright as it drives through a turnaround programme for the business which saw 80 store closures last year. The upbeat assessment belies the face value of its announcement of figures for the year ending 27 April 2019 which reported that total group sales were down 13.4% to £386.4m and the company made an underlying EBITDA loss of £0.4m compared 2018’s profit of £3.4m. But that result was in line with City expectations and the business was able to report that second half performance improved significantly – with the final quarter of the financial year showing only a 2.3% sales decline while figures for the first two months of the new financial year – May and June this year – are ahead by 8.6%. Chief Executive Will Walsh said: “We remain the clear number one player in floorcoverings, having maintained our market leadership during an exceptionally challenging period, and our brand attributes remain strong. Our work is far from finished, and while economic and political uncertainties cloud the near term outlook for the retail sector, our turnaround plan is very much on track.” Victoria Plc reported “record” growth in its preliminary results for the year ended March 30, 2019 against “challenging market conditions”. Like-for-like revenue growth was up 2% but while actual profits before tax slumped to a 3.7m loss from 2018’s £13.4m profit, the Group reported to the City in July that the underlying profit had growth 40%, from £40.8m to £70.3m. £21m was invested in capital expenditure for growth during the year but the company also commented that: “reorganising a factory while still focussed on achieving organic growth felt like conducting open heart surgery whilst the patient was running a marathon, but we are very pleased with the end result.” Latest reports on shopping footfall showing mixed fortunes for retailers with high street traffic down 2.9% in June 2019 but retail parks were marginally ahead compared to last year, according to new data from the BRC-Springboard Footfall monitor. Consumer confidence slipped to a seven-month low in June, according to a GfK survey which said that its “major purchases index” fell three points to minus 2. “While U.K. consumers continue to remain concerned about the wider economy, over which the woman or man in the street has no control, of greater worry are the falls in the measures for personal finance,” said GfK client strategy director Joe Staton. GfK’s savings index went up three points in June, reflecting a trend that consumers are holding back their funds in the light of current economic uncertainties. Carpet imports into the UK were up 4.3% to £76m in the latest HMRC figures for May 2019, adding to a 5.7% increase for the year to date. UK carpet exports look reasonably healthy too with a 3.8% increase for the year to date though data for May showed a 6% decline in overseas sales. Major Belgian flooring firm Balta has announced that Oliver Forberich will become MD of Balta Carpets, ITC and Arc Edition in September, replacing Lieven Vandendriessche, who is leaving to become CEO at Latexco. Mr Forberich joins Balta from Bekaert, a steel wire and coatings company, and was previously with glass and ceramics leader Schott AG.

Recycling rewarded Celebrations for Recofloor’s 10th Anniversary swung into action at The Belfry where the sustainability achievements of the vinyl flooring recycling scheme’s members were recognised at the Recofloor 2019 Awards Event. Flooring companies, contractors and distributors received trophies and certificates in ten major award categories, plus Gold, Silver and Bronze groupings, from guest host, comedian Mark Watson. Recofloor’s scheme members collected 570 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring through the takeback scheme in 2018, an increase of 1.6% and beating last year’s annual record total for the scheme. This is the fifth consecutive year that Recofloor has increased its annual tonnages. Describing Recofloor’s 10 years’ performance as ‘pretty impressive’, Mark added: “It’s great to see and reward people who are doing something good and looking after the resources we’ve got.” Congratulating the efforts of Recofloor’s members, Polyflor’s UK and International Marketing Director, Tom Rollo said: “In the last 10 years, there’s no scheme in the UK in our field that comes anywhere near close to the achievements of Recofloor. The numbers are impressive! Looking further into Europe, Recofloor is seen as a leading, if not the leading, example of a successful flooring recycling scheme. He added: “The commitment of flooring contractors and distributors to go the extra mile and incorporate Recofloor into their day-to-day workings is at the very heart of the scheme’s success. We aim to develop the scheme further, supporting our customers to get the maximum benefit from the scheme. Ultimately, it’s a partnership between us all.” Since its 2009 inception by leading flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor, Recofloor has collected more than 4,500 tonnes of smooth and safety vinyl offcuts and roll ends, uplifted smooth vinyl, luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) and adhesive-free vinyl, which are recycled back into new products, including flooring. This total is enough to cover more than 207 football pitches. The main winners in the eighth annual awards were Fineweave Carpets; Fitwell Flooring, Redruth; Fantasy Flooring Ltd; Andy Nichols, HFD Bridgend; Middlesex Flooring Ltd; Lee Floorstok, Liverpool; CT Flooring Ltd; Branagan Flooring Services Ltd; Birch Distribution and Reform Flooring Ltd. Flooring

Factsheet Adhesive Types Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticized PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors.

ADHESIVES

SELECTION CHECKLIST

The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time: The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked. Odour: Low odour, solvent free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.

Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels.

Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.

Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive.

Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.

Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.

Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured. Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but

this criteria must be checked where appropriate. Subfloor: What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard. While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces. The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation. Special Performance: Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments. Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.

The Perfect System for your Designer Floor The perfect adhesive choice for luxury vinyl tiles Choose Styccobond F46, the market leading pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. Stopgap 300 HD, Stopgap P131 and Styccobond F46. The perfect system for simply stunning luxurious floors.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will...

• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Combination

Crumb

PU foam

www.interfloor.com

Types

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling. Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

68

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment. THE STOCKLISTS August 2019

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

Shading

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

Pile Reversal

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

Shedding

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Indentations

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder. THE STOCKLISTS August 2019

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.flooringone.co.uk Mandy Powell Tel: 0121 683 1426 mandy.powell@flooringone.co.uk

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions

ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS August 2019

Increase sales

• Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support

Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.
