FLOORINGNEWS Delivering style at the V&A F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have helped deliver style and performance at the world’s largest museum of design, the V&A, in London. Contractors from Olivers Contracts Ltd, based in Croydon, were subcontracted by MCD Heritage to install a range of floorcoverings in employee welfare areas, including changing rooms and a canteen, as well as offices and connecting corridors, as part of a refurbishment ahead of the museum reopening following the lifting of lockdown restrictions. A moisture test using a digital hygrometer indicated that subfloor relative humidity levels exceeded 90% in a small area. Contractors applied F. Ball’s Stopgap F77 solvent-free two-part epoxy resin waterproof surface membrane, which isolates residual construction moisture or rising damp with a single application. The area where the waterproof surface membrane had been applied was primed using F. Ball’s Stopgap P141 primer and Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound was then applied at a thickness of 6mm in all areas to create a perfectly smooth base. In the canteen dining area, endgrain wood blocks were adhered using F. Ball’s Styccobond B95, a one-part, flexible, moisture-curing adhesive that is designed to accommodate the natural movement of wood. Bolon woven vinyl tiles were installed in locker rooms and changing rooms using Styccobond F41carpet tile tackifier and In the bathrooms, Forbo Surestep safety flooring was installed using Styccobond F46, a pressure sensitive vinyl adhesive. Commenting on the project, Steve Lampkin, director of Olivers Contracts, said: “Everything went according to plan, and there were zero problems or snagging issues. Fast-track products meant that work could be completed quickly, in stages, allowing access to other trades when required, so the entire project could be completed on time.” T 01538 361 633

Whisper about well-being As the focus on wellbeing continues at pace, awareness of the impact of noise on mental health is at an all-time high. However, hard flooring is still the popular option for allround use in homes and apartments and so installers are increasingly facing questions over what can be done to reduce walking noise and the sound transferred between floors. Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise, says: “Many underlay suppliers solely focus on impact noise as the stand-out acoustic feature, but it’s the ability of an underlay to deal with both types of sound – impact (noise transference between floors) and airborne (noise within the room) – that marks it out as a true star. An underlay that deals with both types of sound ensures a quieter home from within the room and beneath the room.” The rubber sponge constructions of floorwise Acoustica underlays are capable of absorbing airborne as well as impact sound, something particularly true of the range-topping Acoustica Gold Supreme. Using a high-density rubber crumb construction, this 3.5mm thick product not only delivers impressive impact and airborne noise reduction, but also provides a lasting solution to supporting click joints and coping with subfloor irregularities. With a built-in moisture barrier, this really is a supreme quality wood and laminate underlay that’s ready to take on the toughest challenge. For more cost-conscious installations, the Whisper collection provides some great options, including Whisper Gold, a 5mm high-density PE underlay packed with features including 21dB impact sound, absorption of minor subfloor irregularities, cushioned support and a built-in water vapour barrier. Even Whisper basic foam underlay provides 18dB of impact noise reduction, meaning that whatever the budget, you can have a quieter wood or laminate floor with floorwise. Luxury Vinyl Tiles are certainly a popular choice throughout the home, but they aren’t without noise issues too. That’s where Acoustica LVT steps in. Providing 18dB of impact sound insulation and with excellent airborne noise absorption, it’s specifically designed for the demands of LVT flooring, with its ultra-high density 1.5mm thick construction soaking up minor subfloor imperfections without compromising joint stability. Alpha ambitions for Quick-Step Quick-Step, a major player in laminate, wood and vinyl floors, follows up on the announcement of an extended partnership with Patrick Lefevere’s top Belgian team with a new name: the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team. “We’re very pleased to continue our decades-long sponsorship of the Wolfpack, and also very excited to link our Alpha Vinyl flooring product range to the team through a new name,” says Ruben Desmet, President of Unilin Flooring, the company behind the Quick-Step brand. “The Quick-Step brand is, of course, linked to laminate flooring solutions, but we offer much more – including high-quality vinyl flooring”, Desmet continues. “Market demand is booming for vinyl, and Quick-Step wants to dominate this market, as we do for laminate flooring. “Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl floors are rigid, 100%-watertight, ultra-strong vinyl flooring solutions that are almost indistinguishable from real wood or stone – and they can be installed on different types of surfaces, level or fairly irregular.” “When it comes to performance, style, design and detail, Alpha Vinyl is a true leader in its category. With over 800 wins to its name, the soonto-be Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Pro Cycling Team is clearly aligned in undisputed leadership”, he says. www.quick-step.co.uk

He replaces Shaun Lewis who retired last year. Gicquel has a strong carpet industry background having started in retail and then moving into manufacturing for Woodward Grosvenor where he was Sales Office Manager before moving to Alternative Flooring as a sales representative and then onto Ulster where he has risen to Retail Sales Manager. Commenting on his new post, Andrew said: “I have always been impressed by the work of the Carpet Foundation, from the Code of Practice for retailers to the publicity they generate for carpet in the press. They are a vital cog in the UK carpet industry, defending us, promoting us and banging the drum for independent retailers and carpet. I very much look forward to working with them.”

Likewise Group, the Bromsgrove-based floor covering distributor, is to create 20 new jobs initially, with more to come later in the year, with the opening of a new West Midlands distribution centre. The company has been announced as the anchor tenant at Radial Park, a purpose-built warehouse and industrial development at Birmingham Business Park.

FLOORINGBUSINESSNEWS Carpet imports surge ahead

Brintons battered by pandemic

Confirming the surge in UK demand for carpet, imports have now outstripped 2019 figures with Belgium and the Netherlands showing a strong recovery.

The disproportionate impact of Covid on the hospitality sector was revealed in latest data from Brintons which show profits halved last year, but business is building back now.

According to HMRC data, over £83m worth of carpet came into Britain in May – 10% ahead of the same month in 2019 and three times the volume of 2020 imports.

Kidderminster-based Brintons is big in high-end hotels, casinos and cruise ships – the hardest hit business categories – and reported sales down by a fifth and profits down 57% in the year to September 26, 2020.

The total value of imports in the first five months of this year so far were £379m, which compares to £247m for the same period in 2020 and to £370 million for those five months in 2019. The UK’s key carpet trading partners Belgium and The Netherlands are now trading back at normal levels after a collapse in their business in 2020 but the extra growth in imports is being fulled by India (up 19% on 2019) and Turkey (up 45%).

Brinton’s parent company KMHD Flooring Holdco reported a net loss of £17.1 million (2019: £11.9m) on revenue of £62 million in the year to September 26, 2020. Stripping out exceptional and technical items, the company’s actual profit before tax was down 57% to £6.8m.

“Since the start of the re-opening of hospitality internationally, Brintons says it is now out-performing revised financial forecasts for the group.”

Flooring firm failures halved

Since the start of the re-opening of hospitality internationally, Brintons says it is now out-performing revised financial forecasts for the group.

Booming business amid post-lockdown pent-up demand means that insolvencies in the flooring and furnishing industry are running at half their normal rate.

Brintons and KMHD Flooring Holdco has been owned by US private equity firm Argand Partners since 2017.

95 companies from across the flooring and furnishing industry were placed into administration, liquidation or subject to winding up orders in the first half of 2021 — down from 186 in the first six months of last year.

Flooring inflation 3x higher than general retail

According to data compiled by The Furnishing Report, 50 companies went under in Q2 2021 which compares with 98 in the second quarter of 2020, and totals of 91 in each of Q2 2019 and 2018.

“According to data compiled by The Furnishing Report, 50 companies went under in Q2 2021” Government support through access to cheap debt, grants and tax plus deferrals and moratoriums on landlords enforcing unpaid rent have further prevented companies from going to the wall.

Headlam back to 2019 trading levels Leading UK flooring distributor Headlam says sales are back to 2019 levels and has reassured customers on stock levels.. Revenues are up 46% compared to pandemic-affected 2020 and the plc group said in a trading statement today: “The residential sector has continued to be strong, and the commercial sector is continuing to recoup its earlier weakness. “Despite documented industry supply issues, the Company has maintained its inventory position, which currently stands at approximately £117 million,” it said. Headlam is holding an open day for investors today at its major new distribution centre in Ipswich.

Price inflation in flooring is almost three times higher than the general surge in retail prices, with sustained strength led by consumer demand. While general price inflation rose to 2.5% in June, the highest level in almost three years, carpet and flooring has surged ahead to 6.9% according to the latest data fro the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The flooring figure is a little ahead of the furnishing trade in general which is running at 6.5% inflation. However, the May for flooring was 8.3% which suggests the market may have peaked but is sustaining a high level of demand-led price increases.

Confidence continues to build for furnishings Consumers are increasingly confident about buying big ticket items like flooring and furnishing – a sector boosted by continuing travel uncertainty say analysts. While the improvement in GfK’s long-running general Consumer Confidence Index stalled at -9 in June, the same as April’s result, their Major Purchase Index has improved by two points to -5 in June; this is 27 points higher than it was this month last year. Joe Staton, Client Strategy Director GfK, says: “While the shifting sands of an end to lockdown might be the closest most of us get to a summer beach holiday, consumer confidence remains stable at -9 after 16 months of a COVID-induced roller-coaster. “A repetition of last month’s score doesn’t mean confidence is about to nose-dive. The upwards trajectory for the Index since the dark days at the start of the pandemic is currently still on track. However, forecasts for rising retail price inflation could weaken consumer confidence quickly. “On a more positive note, we have strong numbers for our personal financial situation, both for the past year and the year to come. In addition, this month’s further improvement in the Major Purchase Index – the third month in a row – could see shoppers spending in anticipation of a staycation summer,” he said. Marketing insights Contemporary classics, modern masterpieces If the term “classic” encourages expectations of “old fashioned”, think again! The flooring industry has been fashioning many modern classics in recent years which have a timeless style that will endure.

Furlong Flooring – Herringbone in Scandic White

This month, we focus on the two dominant examples in flooring for the 2020s – herringbone and parquet in smooths, and stripes in carpet, along with trends in pattern and fibre technology. erringbone and parquet – H leading the style in LVT When you think about flooring styles, there is nothing more classic than parquet. Dating back centuries, the original ornate designs were succeeded by the simpler herringbone design as more people adopted this style of floor. Victoria Design Floors have taken the concept of the herringbone pattern as inspiration for their new Universal 55 range launching this July, ready to be seen at Harrogate in September. A collection of six wood and two stone designs make up this bespoke collection of 0.55mm, 5” x 30” herringbone planks. Available as both dryback and 2G click which includes built in underlay. These products can be laid not only in the classic herringbone zig zag, but also as a brick bond or straight lay design offering the fitter a number of design options. Victoria Design Floors – Universal Artic Herringbone

“We wanted to put a modern spin on the classic parquet concept and through offering this new collection of larger Herringbone designs, we have done just that,” says James Caldwell, Sales Director for Victoria Carpets & Design Floors. “The stone designs really do take an old favourite and bring them up to date. As much as the current trend for parquets continues, there are always those consumers who are looking for something a little bit different and this range will give them just that”.

“We wanted to put a modern spin on the classic parquet concept and through offering this new collection of larger Herringbone designs, we have done just that.” Furlong Flooring agrees. “Herringbone has become a classic in its own right and has had a resurgence in the last few years, becoming a go-to flooring style for homeowners and interior designers,” says Natasha Patel of Furlong Flooring. “We know this from the popularity of our own Herringbone engineered wood range, which is available in 7 different decors, made from European oak and suitable for both domestic and commercial use. “However, to keep up with the changing needs of today’s busy households and commercial businesses, we’ve embraced this popular design pattern in our other flooring categories so that it can be used in every room of the home, from luxury sitting rooms to places where durability is essential,” says Natasha.

Furlong now offers herringbone patterns in its LVT category with the Carina and Aurora ranges, and in its laminate category with the Chateau range. Furlong even offers herringbone patterns across its vinyl ranges, meaning there is a herringbone option for every room. Herringbone is capable of delivering a contrast of either distinguished or characterful floorcoverings and rooms with this distinct design tell a rich story of their own and this classic style comes with a modern touch from Moduleo. Few know that the term Herringbone actually dates back to the Roman Empire and the style acquired its name due to the way it resembles the bones of a herring fish. But whilst the flooring has strong connotations of timeless, historical design, it has also become ultrapopular in modern homes looking to add dynamism and visual interest, says Moduleo.

“We know this from the popularity of our own Herringbone engineered wood range, which is available in 7 different decors, made from European oak and suitable for both domestic and commercial use.” continued on page 34 THE STOCKLISTS August 2021

Moduleo – Herringbone in Blackjack Oak

Suitable for both classic and contemporary properties, Moduleo’s LVT floors in this style offer the ultimate in comfort, strength and performance. And with two different sizes of herringbone plank available, small or short, a pattern can be accentuated to customer preferences. This offers more flexibility for people to create the room they truly want and, with an historic style like herringbone, they can rest assured that the design will be relevant for years to come. Karndean Designflooring has elevated LVT into an art form to create that modern classical appeal including sophisticated design detail in herringbone and parquet but also extending also into other wood and stone decors. This is exemplified in the company’s premium Art Select collection of 54 options which feature intricate designs and realistic embossing.

“Suitable for both classic and contemporary properties, Moduleo’s LVT floors in this style offer the ultimate in comfort, strength and performance.” Karndean Designflooring – Art Select in Eli’s new bedroom

The collection was featured by popular interior decorator Elisha Utley in her design blog @ Eli_at_home for her most recent projects in her own home. “It was hard to choose from the many different designs but eventually I picked Blonde Oak from the Art Select range as I wanted a traditional parquet look. “I like to mix old and new in my interior style and the Blonde Oak gave me that midcentury option. It’s a colour that will last and complement our home however many times I change my décor, which knowing me will be a lot!” says Elisha. “We now have Karndean flooring fitted in both the lounge and bedroom and the first thing I noticed is how clean it looks. But the

best thing about it is how luxurious and warm it feels. It’s given our bedroom a very grand feeling with so much more personality. We just love it. As does everyone else who sees it,” she says.

Carpeting for contemporary style in stripes and patterns hile herringbone dominates smooth W flooring, the carpet sector saw an explosion in striped designs in the last few years and a general resurgence in the popularity of pattern. “Stripes are a classic within interiors and everywhere else for a reason,” says Kelly Butler of Adam Carpets. “They are simple, can have stripes in endless variations in terms of size and colour and can be styled to work with just about any look. When incorporated into an interior scheme, they inject a dose of understated elegance and sophistication.” Stripes are appreciated for their dirt defying nature. They were initially confined to high traffic areas, such as stairs, but their appeal is now spreading and more people are finding the confidence to play with different shades and hues through out the house from broad to pin stripes.

Adam Carpets offer three very different stripe ranges – a smart Pinstripe with a creative combination of twist and velvet yarn; the playful Deckchair with broad stripes in vivid colours; and Panache, a broken design effect which allows the colours to blend together to be a subtle backdrop or a statement piece in any room. All patterns go with stripes, as long as the colours within the different patterns are chosen to complement each other. Stripes go particularly well with checks and other geometric shapes for a graphic inspired scheme. But they also look super chic and are great for setting off florals.

“People are becoming more adventurous and StainFree Wilton responds to this with patterned carpet that’s positioned at mid-level consumers, rather than at the exclusive domain of affluent owners,” says Debbie. “The collection features a range of beautiful floral designs, tartans and checks. All are classic patterns given a new lease of life through elegant colourways taken right out of the hottest looks.” Abingdon Flooring – Stainfree Wilton in Chatsworth Silver

Pattern is performing well across the carpet sector. “We’re seeing pattern playing a significant role in the homes and palettes of influencers and magazines,” says Millie Barlow of Abingdon Flooring. “Bold prints are big news and we’re certainly beginning to see a shift in the attitudes of consumers to embracing pattern in their home.

While there are many people that feel comfortable in choosing strong patterns for their home interiors, there are probably far more that want a little guidance and reassurance. Victoria has set out to ensure just that with a collection that offers a considered selection of designs with colourways that never feel too daring but that also offer something a little bold should the consumer really discover their adventurous side.

FLOORING FOCUS

Minutes matter to meet installation demand Retailers and installers are under pressure like never before as the sector deals with the perfect storm of a sales boom, a fitting backlog and a skills shortage of trained installers.

Stopgap Micro Rapid can be applied to a seamless micro feathered edge to fill indentations formed by screws used to secure plywood and hardboard sheets, as well as the gaps between boards, preventing imperfections transferring to finished installations. It can also be used to repair minor surface defects in a wide range of other absorbent surfaces, including sand/cement and calcium sulphate screeds.

We covered the training and skills issue earlier this year but product technology has helped accelerate installation. Interfloor prides itself on providing time-savers for quality flooring finishes. Whatever the challenge, Interfloor has a product to make fitting a perfect floor faster and easier, saving both time and money. Duralay’s specialist LVT underlays are quick to fit, easy to work with and help reduce the risk of damage to luxury tiles due to uneven sub-floors. The collection includes Multi-Fit, Low-Grab and Dry-Back underlays all designed to maximise underfoot comfort and ensure the LVT looks good for longer. Duralay’s LVT underlays are quick to fit

Fast grab STK300 from Interfloor is versatile and effective

The product is walk-on hard and ready to receive new floorcoverings from just 20 minutes after application, and priming is not required prior to use, saving further time.

“F. Ball & Co. continuously enhances its products to help flooring professionals meet increasing customer expectations, including working to ever more exacting time constraints.” With a fast setting time of 90-minutes under normal conditions and flow properties that help it cover poor condition subfloors faster, floorwise has developed Pro-Screed Gold to match the performance of the market’s best products while still delivering on the supplier’s promise of value. Working over old adhesive residue, on top of a wide range of substrates and compatible with underfloor heating systems, and moisture tolerant, Pro-Screed Gold is a reassuringly versatile solution.

The evolution of flooring adhesive has arrived with Mapei’s new Ultrabond Eco V4 Evolution, the latest addition to their Ultrabond Eco Adhesives range. The ‘all-in-one’ universal adhesive combines the best characteristics of Mapei’s floor covering adhesives in one formulation.

“Whatever the challenge, Interfloor has a product to make fitting a perfect floor faster and easier – saving both time and money.” A perfect accompaniment is Fast Grab Multi-Purpose Flooring Adhesive STK300. This versatile, water-based synthetic latex adhesive has exceptional bond strength, is easy to trowel and is non staining. It can be used on sub-floor types from concrete to chipboard to screed. Gripperrods Self-Adhesive Floor Edgings and Nosings are the perfect ‘finishing touch’, speeding up the fitting of the floor and are available in a range of finishes such as oak, matt silver and matt gold. Extensive research and development facilities at F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s headquarters in Cheddleton, Staffordshire, enable the company to continuously enhance its products to help flooring professionals meet increasing customer expectations, including working to ever more exacting time constraints. For example, the latest advancements in cement technology has enabled F. Ball to provide installers with a time-saving solution for where a levelling compound is not required when working over plywood subfloors: Stopgap Micro Rapid, a new ultra-smooth, flexible, rapid-drying floor finishing compound for creating a flawlessly smooth subfloor finish. 38

Available in 15kg tubs, the easy to apply adhesive provides a strong initial hold and extended open and working time. It is suitable for installing LVT, carpet, PVC, linoleum, semi-flexible vinyl tiles and modular LVT. Level IT Pro30, from subfloor preparation specialists UltraFloor, has been formulated to refurbish existing floors in previously unachievable timescales, without removing old adhesive residues first – revolutionising traditional subfloor preparation methods. All

subfloors prepared using Level IT Pro30 can accept foot traffic in as little as 30 minutes, and are ready to receive unbonded floor coverings after 45 minutes and bonded floor coverings after 90 minutes, including LVT and vinyl,

Karndean Designflooring – Van Gogh Warm Brushed Oak

A kitchen worthy of a Hollywood handshake As the Great British Bake Off tent prepares to return to our screens and our mouths are already watering in anticipation of another season of delicious cakes, bakes and hilarious soggy bottoms. Karndean Designflooring are delighted to reveal they have partnered with former Great British Bake Off contestant Priya O’Shea as part of her kitchen renovation. Priya has taken time out of her busy schedule to tell us why this space is the heart of home for her family and her imaginative bakes. “Hi, I’m Priya and I live in Leicester with my husband Sean and our two young boys who are six and four. I’ve always loved cooking. I grew up in a household where there was a constant stream of extended family coming in and out and huge family feasts most weekends. 42

Our kitchen is where I develop recipes, create content for social media, bake for friends and family but it’s also where we all eat. On days when I’m up to my ears in Lego or Dinosaurs, I long for the headspace I get from cooking. When the rest of the family are in bed it’s not unusual for me to be back in the kitchen baking well into the early hours. When we moved into our newbuild house eight years ago I knew it was right for us because the wall between the kitchen and dining room had been knocked through to create a larger family living space. The kitchen had large speckled porcelain floor tiles that we weren’t keen on but couldn’t justify ripping out as they were brand new. When we finally decided to update the kitchen we replaced the old gloss wood effect units with a new layout that allowed a better flow around THE STOCKLISTS August 2021

We wanted to go with a flooring brand we could trust. We have friends and family that have chosen Karndean and they highly recommended it. We also liked that there was a huge range of colours and styles to choose from.

I also knew I’d want to paint a feature wall at some point and the classic look of Warm Brushed Oak gives us the flexibility to add in navy, greens or even blush pink. Conveniently, this floor comes in both rigid core and gluedown formats to suit different conditions but we chose gluedown as

With young children and a tremendous amount of cooking happening things do sometimes fall off tables or counters. We’ve lost many mixing bowls, mugs and plates because of the porcelain floor. I wanted something easy to clean and more comfortable underfoot but also forgiving of accidents and able to withstand the kids bashing their toys around.

ever damage a plank it would be easy to replace and with two young kids it’s great to have that peace of mind. We love our new floor so much that we have since extended it into the hallway. It has a subtle variation in colour across the planks which makes it interesting without taking over and suits our busy lifestyle and is perfectly styled to help me juggle my work and our boisterous boys.”

ACG Smart showcase ACG’s uniquely independent approach to group buying will be the focus of their presentation at the Flooring Show as the organisation sets itself apart with its hands-off model of costeffective membership. ACG ensures independent retailers continue to trade directly with their suppliers, receiving the discounts and percentage rebates that are paid directly into their own bank. ACG encourages members to support group suppliers maximising the benefits of membership. The members, of which there are now over 320, pay a small subscription which the group guarantees they will quickly recoup. “We see ourselves as the deal broker to get competitive prices plus percentage rebates from the UK’s top suppliers on behalf of our members,” says Executive Director Richard Moore. “But once we have lined up the deal, we step aside. Most of our members are fiercely independent firms and know better than us how to run their businesses.” ACG also has invested significantly in brand new premium class-leading point of sale displays exclusively for member stores. More retailers are joining ACG every month, not only for the lucrative financial rewards but the growing support in protecting ‘bricks and mortar’ retailers from the threat of the internet and home sellers. Victoria Carpets

Consumer-centric approach Victoria will be showcasing several new carpet ranges as well as their new look LVT offer at Harrogate. The company has been busier than ever since the last show, completely refreshing its product offer and overall branding for a much more consumer centric approach. ‘We’ve really focused on not only updating the colours and specifications of our carpets, but also making our products easier to shop,” says James Caldwell, Sales Director for Victoria. ‘Our carpet ranges have been categorised into Natureborn: for our wool products, EasiCare: for our man made and Luxuria: which is the very best of the Victoria offer. “We’ve applied the same thinking to our LVT ranges too and will now be able to offer all products (except for the parquets and Tapestry) as both dryback and click. Again, making it so much simpler to understand,” he said. “We have new LVT products too and will be able to show our new portal U2V where customers can order both carpet and LVT online. There will certainly be lots to see!” Hall A Stand 11 & 20 • 01562 749300 • www.myvictoria.co.uk

Unifloor Underlay Systems

Jumpax solutions to sticky issues Unifloor regularly received questions about whether it was possible to direct stick engineered wood flooring onto a Jumpax product. Unifloor therefore tested Jumpax HD and Jumpax Nature for its suitability, rigorous tests were carried out In a climate chamber. Unifloor tested floorboards of 100x100 cm. The two Jumpax products (Jumpax HD and Jumpax Nature) were tested with both a three-layer engineered wood with a varnish coating and a two-layer with oil. The temperature in the climate chamber was then increased to 35°C and the relative humidity to 78%. This is much higher than the 50-60% RH stipulated in the laying instructions. The results of the test are very positive and confirm the quality of the Unifloor Jumpax products. After one week, the expansion of all floor combinations with Jumpax HD and Jumpax Nature was found to be within 1 mm and no settling occurred. All in all, you can conclude: Jumpax and engineered wood are an ideal combination. Hall B Stand 20 • 0570 85 55 33 • www.unifloor.nl

The sexiest underlay you will never see Abingdon Flooring Delivering delight

After the highly successful launch of its StainFree Wilton patterned carpet collection earlier this year, Abingdon Flooring will be coming to Harrogate with more fabulous styles ready to delight homeowners. Abingdon Flooring will also preview Velvet Touch, a carpet with the British manufacturer’s widest colour bank yet. Millie Barlow, head of marketing, says; “We’re delighted to be at The Flooring Show and we’re looking forward to showing off our new developments to visiting retailers. FLOORINGNEWS Flying the flag for recycling Leicester-based Kilworth Flooring & Furnishing Company is ‘flying the flag’ for waste recycling after winning a Recofloor award for their commitment to diverting waste vinyl flooring from landfill. Will Stanway, Installation and Operations Manager, was named Recofloor Champion for his efforts in ensuring clean waste offcuts and roll-ends from flooring projects were collected, segregated, and sent for recycling into new products, including flooring. The specialist flooring contractor was also Highly Commended in the Contractor of the Year category of the 2021 Recofloor Awards, which recognise the environmental efforts of flooring sector participants across the UK. Since joining Recofloor in 2019, the firm has collected more than 30 bulk bags of waste vinyl flooring for recycling. Will says: “As a smaller player, it’s great to be recognised for our efforts in preventing recyclable waste material from being landfilled. If we can do a positive thing, and if enough smaller companies take part too, then we can really make an impact. We are flying the flag for recycling!” “Joining Recofloor was another tick in another box for an area in which we clearly create a lot of waste,” says Neil Stanway, Managing Director. “The best thing about Recofloor is the story you can tell your customers, helping to promote a positive vibe within the business and the industry. The take-back scheme has helped the company to ‘better redirect the vinyl flooring waste’, he says. “We have a weight limit in our commercial waste bins, so to be able to offload that weight into the Recofloor collection system, which is such good value, has benefited us in terms of disposal cost savings.” T 0161 355 7618 www.recofloor.org

Flooring

Factsheet Adhesive Types Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticized PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations.

ADHESIVES

SELECTION CHECKLIST

The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time: The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked.

Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors.

Odour: Low odour, solvent-free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.

Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels.

Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.

Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive.

Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.

Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.

Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured. Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but this criteria must be checked where appropriate.

Subfloor: What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard. While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces. The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation. Special Performance: Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments. Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS August 2021

• Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support

Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

THE STOCKLISTS August 2021

Flooring factsheet Vinyl Flooring Vinyl is a fast growing sector of the flooring market due to its durability at relatively low cost and huge range of designs available. Sheet vinyl and cushion floor by the roll are popular but the sector is dominated by LVT. In reality, most of the products sold today are “LVP”, Luxury Vinyl Planks, as wood decors are more popular than ceramics and stone but the term LVT is still used to cover the whole non-sheet market.

Benefits

• Huge choice in terms of decors across wood, ceramic, stone and geometric designs

• I mpressive realism – not just in the design but infinishing

techniques that allow for wood knots you can feel, tiles you can grout, etc. See appearance options.

• Excellent performance in durability for high traffic areas, scratch resistance and cleanability. Vinyl also tends to be much more nonslip than natural materials. Some products are water resistant for bathrooms and kitchens.

Product options

• Dry back – a sheet or tile that needs to be fixed to the sub-floor using an adhesive.

• Self-adhesive – tiles with a peel-off backing paper to stick to the

sub-floor. Some tiles have adhesive overlaps to stick to each other rather than the sub-floor.

• Loose lay vinyl – tiles that simply drop onto the floor and rely on

a high friction backing to keep them in place – they demand a very sound, level sub-floor but are the easiset type of tile to lay or replace.

Click – tiles that have a mechanical jointing system to attach to • Warm and soft to touch compared to ceramic and stone floors - and • one another (like a locked tongue and groove system) and ‘float’ on a good heat insulator anyhow, and suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.

• Sound reduction – vinyl has neglible impact sound compared

to the tap/click of laminate and transmits less sound and vibration compared to solid floor.

• Considerably cheaper than the ‘real’ thing – both to buy and to fit – and tile/plank approach minimises wastage.

Installation

Installation preparation Vinyl requires a dry, sound, level subfloor as the relative thinness of vinyl and its light reflection performance will quickly reveal imperfections after installation as well as cause potential wear issues. Exisitng wooden/MDF floors may need a plywood underlay up to 6mm thick and then the joints will need to be skimmed or taped. Non-wood sub-floors will need a self-levelling screed to be laid to ensure a suitable base for the floor. A damp-proof membrane may be required depending on sub-floor moisture levels. However, new rigid core products are less flexible and can be laid more easily over existing floors – see Construction.

Top Coating Wear Layer Decor Layer

www.invictus.co.uk

the sub-floor without being glued down. There are many proprietary versions of the click system which offer fast, clean installation and stability. Appearance options Vinyl tiles and planks cover a hugh variety of sizes and shapes and can be mix-and-matched to achieve an infinite number of designs. Current fashions include extra wide and long planks for wood through to very small planks for wood. Border effects can be easy to achieve in LVT.

www.karndean.com

Other notable options include:

• Embossed – this is where the top clear layer of the tile has been

embossed to create a realistic texture that matches the style of the stone of wood decor. Registered embossed is the most authentic – the texture matches the design so that, for example, a wood knot or hand-scraped element in the wood design can be felt on the surface of the flooring.

• Grouting and grooving – vinyl tiles can be laid with grouting inlay

www.myvictoria.co.uk

strips or beads of vinyl for addewd realism – and there are acrylic grouts that can be applied. In wood decors, planks are available with v-grooves or bevelled edges between planks for added realism.

LVT construction

Top coating – A polyurethane or aluminium oxide coating provides protection against scratches and stains and gives enhances anti-slip. Wear layer – This is a key layer - determining the performance and resilience of the product. A 0.3mm (12 mil) wear layer is a good for heavy wear areas. Commercial installations need 0.5mm wear layers or above with 0.7mm at the top end. The wear warranties and guarantees carried by products will be based on this thickness. Decor layer – This is the decor itself - in essence it is a paper- or filmbased photographic inkjet print. (A few LVT floors have the image printed directly to the surface of the floor but this implies less image definition and different wear characteristics.)

PVC Middle Layer(s) Fibre Glass Layer(s) PVC Base Layer

THE STOCKLISTS August 2021

PVC and fibre glass layers – The construction ‘sandwich’ can vary between products but a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers for strength and flexibility and fibre glass layers for structural stability may be used. Any click-system profile will be incorporated into these layers. Products often use a combination of recycled vinyl which is cheaper and virgin PVC which lasts longer and is more stable. Rigid core LVT has a solid, less flexible PVC layer with maximum stability which means it can be laid over exisiting, less even flooring without showing imperfections and therefore avoiding wear problems. Base (or backing) layer – The final high density PVC layer varies according to the installation requirement and is designed for taking adhesive or as an ‘underlay’ for loose-lay and click installations. 67

Stocklists: Flooring Fact Sheet from Interfloor

Flooring factsheet Eco-friendly underlay Sustainable underlay

Interfloor ‘Says NO to Waste’

renu® is a game changer. Interfloor’s new underlay meets the concerns of our modern world in reducing waste and being environmentally sustainable.

renu® is a sustainable, recycled carpet underlay and is without question the most sustainable underlay in Interfloor’s long history.

It’s made by bringing together raw materials that we save from going to landfill with some that have a positive effect on the environment.

We have used post-consumer waste, car tyres and plastic bottles in the manufacture of our underlay for many years. But with renu® we have gone even further responding to the aspiration for a fully sustainable product. It’s made from 98% recycled materials, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, which means keeping waste from going to landfill and is 100% recyclable itself! The main body of the underlay is made of foam reclaimed from recycled soft furnishings, this foam is them mixed with a binding agent and subjected to high temperature steam under high pressure. The backing is made from 100% recycled and unbleached paper and we use vegetable-based inks for printing. The facing film is made from an ethically produced, carbonnegative bio-based film made from sugar cane. The sugar cane actively captures CO2 from the atmosphere whilst at the same time releasing oxygen – making this material not just green, but proactively green. Let’s not forget, the point of underlay is that it feels great and prolongs the life of a new carpet and renu®, being made from highdensity foam and with a thickness of 9mm, is suitable for all areas of the home.

The in-store sales support available to renu® stockists

renu® stockists will be included in the online stockist locator on the Interfloor website.

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home.

www.floorwise.co.uk

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will...

• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Combination

Crumb

PU foam

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.

www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk

Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
