Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Regular Maintenance

Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Periodic Cleaning

When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package: WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth • Scoop up or scrape off solids

Chemspec Europe is one of the first WOOLSAFE Licensees in the UK to have a ‘green’ product certified. It is expected that other products will follow shortly.

For the widest range of WOOLSAFE approved products www.chemspec-europe.com

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.) Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match.

For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

The original carpet tile

SHEDDING

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.

6

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

• shedding • pulled loops

SPROUTING

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADING

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATIC

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990). THE STOCKLISTS December 2009

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course. THE STOCKLISTS December 2009

FLATTENING

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

SOILING

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages

- Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil

carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.

T HE R EGENCY

Collection

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop. Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality. Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is BONDED Tip Sheared Level Loop Tip Sheared Level Loop Sheared Level Loop a versatile, textured finish that is idealTipfor plain colours. Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have not stitched into the backing in any way. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.interfloor.com

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

www.interfloor.com

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Benefits

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

PU foam

THE STOCKLISTS December 2009

Types

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

We tick all the boxes!

Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to.

Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours.

A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line.

Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.

As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others.

the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality

Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.

Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of the product range to consumers with a market-leading modular POS system which they will deliver and design to suit your store.

Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers to provide products and services that ticks all the boxes.

100% recycled carpet Mohawk International takes old plastic bottles and turns them into beautiful, luxurious carpet... Hard to believe we know, but a plastic bottle you drink from today could one day become fibres in Mohawk’s carpet.

Make the most of the consumer’s love of all things green with the new Environmental Tombola featuring carpet manufactured from 100% recycled material

Polyethylene terephthalate (P.E.T) is the top quality resin required in the production of plastic drinks bottles. When recycled, it can be extruded into fibres that are far superior to lower-grade synthetic virgin fibres used in making other brands of carpet yarns. Mohawk recycles over 3 billion plastic bottles each year. By controlling every aspect of “Mohawk recycles over 3 billion the recycling plastic bottles each year.” process, Mohawk guarantees the highest standards of performance in its luxurious and beautiful carpet. From bottle to floor - that’s how we do it.

News Harrogate show gains strength The new Harrogate Floor Show has seen the industry delivery on its promises of support for the traditional home of the flooring trade fair to be held next September.

Organisers are ahead of expectations in signing exhibitors for the event with more than 40 companies already committed including leading industry names. “We are well ahead of where we dared hope to be,” said show organiser David Wildman. “Everyday brings us more support and this is shaping up to be a fantastic show for the trade.”

David

Last month, David announced a long list of committed exhibitors which included Abingdon, Cormar, F Ball, Furlong and several Headlam companies. This month, more key players including Victoria Carpets, Lano and Edel Telenzo have joined the event.

“The support from such substantial flooring companies has given the event real strength and purpose going forward” said David. “The industry seems to have made up its mind that Harrogate is the place to be in September 2010.”

Exhibitor bookings have been motivated by a 20% reduction in the price of floor space compared to 2009. Also, the new idea of opening on a Sunday, September 5th, has been welcomed by the trade as an opportunity to create a more enjoyable atmosphere at the event. “We’re looking to create an event that’s a little more welcoming, friendly and, dare I say, fun,” says David. “I want people to enjoy doing business and I think that if we provide a warm welcome and better facilities, people will do better business.”

Wendy

The Harrogate Flooring Show has appointed Wendy Adams Associates as the event management team for the show with Wendy Adams and Danielle Brown providing in-depth experience in marketing and administration. The event has also negotiated with Destination Harrogate, a group made up of all the main hotels in the area, to agree a package of accommodation rates for the event which are expected to be lower than the 2009 rates. Cormar trains to gain

The course attendees with Cormar’s Steve Flesher (far left), Ray Morgan of the Flooring Guild (6th from left) and Cormar’s Steve Tapp (far right)

Independent retailers were given the chance to boost their sales skills thanks to Cormar Carpets, the UK’s leading tufted carpet manufacturer. In association with the Flooring Guild, the UK training and education centre for flooring industry, a three day ‘Selling Quality Carpets’ course was held at Cormar’s factory in Bury, Lancashire, exclusively for its customers. Ten people, from retailers around the country, attended the course led by Ray Morgan of the Flooring Guild. Content included understanding production methods, planning and estimating and an introduction to professional retail skills. Attendees were also given a chance to look round Cormar’s impressive facility and certificates were presented on the final day.

“We actively encourage retailers to invest in their business through training,” says David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets. “Customers are more informed, selective and demanding than ever before so it’s in everyone’s interests to ensure staff are really knowledgeable and well-informed about the product they are selling. “However for many independents the time and cost element means that training isn’t always a priority. By sponsoring the course we gave those interested an opportunity to attend a concise and informative course for a nominal fee. And feedback was extremely positive.” T 01204 881234

After perhaps one of the toughest years for retailing in recent history, many will be glad to see 2009 come to a close. Whilst it has produced plenty of casualties along the way, it seems, in some quarters at least, that orders have improved in recent weeks. Perhaps that is an indicator that the recession fear that grabbed the UK has settled a little. Property movement – particularly new-build is the big requisite for all interiors based industry and that is still sticking due to lack of banking investment and employment security. At British Wool, wool prices have held steady in the last few months and the demand is good – all indicators that there is some activity in the textile industry. British Wool has carried on with our many promotional activities throughout the year, introducing a new campaign, new consumer website and working closely with consumer publications to promote British Wool ranges to the consumer. Business goes on and we all have to ensure that marketing and promotion continue so that we are ready for when the market returns.” Ian Hartley, CEO at the BWMB said. “We want to wish our friends in the retail flooring industry a very Happy Christmas and here’s hoping that there will be sustainable and improved trading conditions in the New Year.”

Business News ‘Perfect storm’ in Euro market A ‘perfect storm’ of market challenges for the European flooring industry has prompted the biggest player Balta to suggest a radical plan that would consolidate the continental industry.

In an unprecedented move, Balta has issued an invitation to its competitors to join forces to overcome the economic downturn that is rumoured to be threatening the viability of key companies in the sector. Industry commentators in Belgium have talked of a ‘market collapse’ and estimate exports are 26% down with sales declines of up to 40% for some participants. A recessionary decrease in demand has combined with increased raw material costs for synthetics and a poor exchange rate for sterling for a carpet industry that is around 50% dependent on importing into the UK.

“It is a very serious situation and we believe some consolidation is needed.”

“The combination of these factors is the perfect storm for our industry,” says Geert Vanden Bossche of Balta. “It is a very serious situation and we believe some consolidation is needed. We have sent out a signal that we are interested in joining forces.”

Balta, whose operation includes brands such as Balta Broadloom, Balta Rugs, Balterio and ITC, appear to have secured their own position. “In some of our business units we are running flat out and achieved considerable success in volume sales and in gaining market share,” says Geert.

Balta is a major supplier to CarpetRight among others and admit that their sales growth is at the expense of margins as the mix has moved to lower average prices, combined with the relative weak pound sterling. "Rather than investing in additional capacity we are willing to consider consolidation to avoid a build-up of overcapacity."

Balta are looking for true consolidation and make clear they are not on a buying spree to mop up rivals in a recession. “We do not have fat wallets,” says Geert and equity swaps or vendor loans could be another mechanism to fund the change. Likely partners would need to be of sufficient size to make the move worthwhile – a minimum turnover of Euro 50m – 100m is likely. Balta are not naming preferred partners for consolidation and it is early days for the discussions. Companies including Associated Weavers, Beaulieu, Domo and Lano will be considering the situation with interest.

Behind the scenes, Balta’s owners Doughty Hanson are a UK private equity fund looking for an exit and a bigger Balta would contribute to a better proposition in a turbulent market. It is also an opportunity to fill gaps in the Balta product portfolio and the company is known to be looking to build its position in contract flooring, carpet tiles, needle felt and synthetic grass. This drive has been given more power with the appointment of new CEO Jules Noten in January, followed quickly by Carl Verstraelen joining as Chief Financial Officer in June.

UK market news CBI reports carpets ‘return to growth’

High street retailers saw their fastest growth in more than two years in October, according to the latest CBI Distributive Trades Survey, with furniture and carpets retailers among those to enjoy increasing sales.

During October, 41% of respondents said sales had risen, while 33% said they had fallen. The resulting +8% balance was the highest since December 2007. Retail confidence continues into November, with a +19% balance expecting sales growth, the most positive sentiment since July 2007.

CBI data for the period showed that carpeting was among the product areas that are now seeing growth again after a "difficult year", helping to contribute to an overall increase in spending in the year to October and the most positive results for two years. The connection between floor furnishings and the housing market was noted by CBI Distributive Trades Panel chairman Andy Clarke, "It is heartening to see signs of life in sectors related to the housing market, particularly those retailers selling white goods and furniture, who have had a torrid two years." Mohawk expect improvement

US carpet firm Mohawk managed to post a third-quarter profit ahead of expectations despite a 21% drop in sales when the company reported to shareholders last month. Net income was £21 million.

Mohawk chairman Jeff Lorberbaum said the trading outlook was tough but with some signs of hope: “Our European business, which is primarily residential, is being impacted by low consumer spending and compressed housing sales, similar to the US, and appears to be stabilizing. “The stronger euro is making exports outside of Europe more difficult and negatively influencing pricing. ” 38

Carpetright gain from Allied

Carpetright are expecting a stronger second half performance by the end of 2009 after the second consecutive quarter of rising sales with the retail chain gaining market share and benefiting from the demise of Allied Carpets earlier this year.

Chairman and Chief Executive Philip Harris said the overall floor coverings market fell over 20 percent in the last six months but added: “"Although we expect the overall UK/Ireland market to be down, we expect to have a good second half". But he cautioned that in 2010 shoppers might be kept out of showrooms by the general election,TV coverage of soccer's World Cup and tax hikes for higher earners. Victoria looking to recovery

An 84% fall in profits headlined the financial results of Victoria Carpets in November after losses in the company’s operations in Ireland and Canada but the UK position remains profitable after an 11% fall in revenues from £12.4m to £11.1 million. Victoria chairman Alexander Anton said: “The global recession has continued to impact the trading landscape in all of the geographies in which the Group operates. “Despite the difficult trading conditions, the UK operation has continued to invest in new products for the residential sector, which should benefit trading in the second half.

“Looking beyond this,Victoria is very well positioned so that when recovery in the markets does occur, the business is in good shape to move quickly to exploit and benefit fully from improved conditions both at home and overseas,” he said.

retailers respond to industry issues

Scrooge or Santa? How did your customers and suppliers treat you in 2009? Was it as bad as you feared – and does it look like a Happier New Year? This month’s Flooring Forum is looking for your business report on the past year and wants to examine the prospects for the future.

Have suppliers helped or hindered? Have you benefited from more competitive pricing by manufacturers and wholesalers - or have you seen margins squeezed and tighter credit and accounts chasing? Have customers traded down on quality and price – or simply not traded at all – and which sections of the market have held up best.

What do you want the industry to do to generate some growth in 2010? – is it more important to have more new products with more value or just ease the pricing and credit on existing ranges? And finally, we have some questions about the Government’s role,VAT and the banks – so a good opportunity to work off some aggression!

The online survey takes less than four minutes and it’s anonymous and doesn’t need any form filling. Please help us inform the industry. Visit www.thestocklists.com and click on the survey banner to take part. Flooring Forum - Let’s hear it!

Our platform for retailers to respond to trade issues and inform the industry about the problems and opportunities they face on the High Street. Each provocative topic for debate is linked to an anonymous online survey and there’s a soapbox feature where retailers can sound off about the subject. Launch pad

What’s taking off early in 2010

Balterio launches new Ecovise woven wiltons natural stone take the eco initiative Quality laminate flooring producer Balterio, launches Pure Stone, a new collection of laminate tiles combining ease of use and the warm feeling of laminate with the character of natural stone. The new collection, featuring tiles with a rectangular format, will be available in 4 decors: Limestone White, Limestone Tobacco, Belgian Blue Flamed and Belgian Blue Honed.

In addition to exclusive decors and extensive options for a perfect finish, Balterio also opted for large, square sizes (120 cm x 40 cm tiles). They are very popular all over the world for residential and professional applications. Large tiles can add an extra aesthetic dimension to a room by making it appear larger. This gives smaller rooms and offices a modern and sophisticated look. The large sizes also have fewer and very tight joints. This makes a room even bigger. They are easier to clean and less expensive to maintain. “In developing our new tile collection, we have focused more on the character of the floor,” says Franky Terrijn, marketing manager at Balterio. “Natural stone has a majestic look that can easily be lost if all the details are not right. This is why we decided not to include any joints, and work with a subtle v-groove instead. We have also provided an extra large tile in our range and a substantial range of accessories including straight baseboards, quadrants and various types of profiles for an enhanced finish.” T + 32 56 62 80 77 www.balterio.com

News Birmingham show invests in future

National Floor Show

An ‘exceptional event’ is promised by the National Floor Show organisers who have moved the event to Birmingham for September 2010. “We’re planning a show that the flooring industry can be proud of,” says Sunny Patel of UBM Live.

UBM has also published their first list of exhibitors which shows some 25 companies that have confirmed their attendance at the event. Key players on that list include Associated Weavers, Adore Floors, Asiatic Carpets, Karndean and Bajong. UBM have set out to convince doubters in the trade about the move to the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham after industry debate about the venue switch and the launch of a rival event in Harrogate which is going ahead at the same time.

The National Flooring Show at NEC Birmingham “We’re very aware of the situation the flooring industry is faced with and are runs from Tuesday, September 7 – 9. disappointed that companies are being forced to decide between the two,” said Sunny. “The NEC is a first class venue and we think it’s about time that the event started to live up to its name and become a truly national event.” UBM Live have been running the event in Harrogate for the last nine years and the show has attracted over 4000 visitors at its peak but in recent years Tarkett Eclipse premium floorcovering at audience levelsRoyal haveInfirmary declined to around 3000.They say the move to the NEC Manchester Birmingham is the best plan to halt the slide.

“The National Floor Show 2010 is gaining momentum and we’re thrilled with progress,” said Sunny. “We can help exhibitors drive their business forward and deliver a real return on their investment. The UBM show team: Bottom row (from left to right): Abigail Maas, Field “UBM Live is prepared to invest in the show’s long-term future. Healthy help for hospital floor F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s high performance subfloor preparation products and flooring adhesives have been installed at St. Charles Hospital, London. Specified for the main reception area and a number of access and service corridors by flooring contractors Shedon Interiors Ltd., F. Ball’s reformulated, latex-free Stopgap Green Bag provided excellent smoothing properties and a seamless finish for the hospital floor. Styccobond F46, designed specifically for vinyl floorcoverings, was used to secure the Chrysalis and Ethos vinyl floorcoverings selected by the hospital. Located in North Kensington, London, the facilities at St. Charles Hospital include a minor injuries unit and a rehabilitation department for the elderly. As part of continued maintenance at the Grade II listed building, the floors in the main reception area and main corridors were being refurbished. As such, the existing vinyl floorcovering, screed and adhesive residues were removed using mechanical means, prior to priming the subfloor using undiluted Stopgap P131. A general purpose neoprene primer, Stopgap P131 prevents smoothing underlayments drying out too rapidly and promotes their adhesion to the subfloor. To create a smooth surface for the vinyl floorcovering selected for the hospital, Stopgap Green Bag 114 was installed directly onto the primed subfloor surface at a thickness of 7-8mm. Offering a high compressive strength, Stopgap Green Bag 114 is ideal for heavy-duty interior applications. With excellent flow and self-smoothing properties,

Stopgap Green Bag 114 provided ease of installation for the 500m2 area of the hospital’s main reception area and corridors. 42

December 2009

Recently reformulated to avoid the use of natural rubber latex content, Stopgap Green Bag is now a low odour and protein-free product. As well as enhancing the product’s excellent smoothing properties, the protein-free formulation will help to prevent bacterial growth, thereby ensuring that the new floors continue to satisfy the hospital’s strict hygiene requirements. News Porridge produces underlay! A world first recycling scheme in Britain’s prison service is being ‘swept under the carpet’! Carpenter, one of the world’s largest foam producers, is converting foam mattresses from public prisons across the UK, into underlay. It is expected to save the prison service more than £5million over five years in disposal costs. “This is the first scheme of its kind and has never been done anywhere in the world. We are delighted to be a part of it and to be able to make such an impact on waste management,” says Richard Harris, key account sales manager for Carpenter.

Under a new contract agreement with the prison service, mattresses are collected, granulated and recycled to produce polyurethane carpet underlay which is then sold nationally throughout the UK. And it is not just the underlay division of the company that is big on recycling. Every piece of polyester wadding produced is made from almost 100% recycled plastic bottles and reconstituted square blocks of foam are converted into a number of everyday products such as gym mats. Carpenter is also part of the Buy Recycle code. T 01457 861141 www.carpenter.ltd.uk

Screed success for newcomer Despite being a recent introduction to the Floorwise Pro Screed collection, Pro Screed F.5000 Extra 2 Part Latex Mix Smoothing Compound has quickly become one of the top sellers from the range and is available now from all Floorwise distributors.

With a synthetic latex formula, F.5000 Extra is highly versatile and extremely cost competitive, making it a natural all-round solution for contractors. Capable of levelling uneven substrates such as concrete, sand/cement screeds, metal, terrazzo, quarry tiles, asphalt and old bituminous residues F.5000 EXTRA is self-smoothing and has excellent flow. The low odour formulation means that F.5000 Extra is suitable for use in occupied areas and as it is protein and casein free, it is also suitable for use in biologically sensitive areas.

Another big advantage for F.5000 Extra is its drying time, allowing the installation of loose laid floorcoverings after just eight hours and bonded coverings after just 24 hours at 20°C.The two-part – powder and liquid – smoothing compound can be applied in normal applications up to 10mm thick and as a bulked compound between 10 and 20mm. “F.5000 Extra is part of a new generation of synthetic latex screeds that have almost universal application properties,” explains Richard Bailey, Managing Director, Floorwise. “With the ability to be used over a variety

of substrates and in the majority of locations including sensitive ones such as healthcare and food preparation locations, it makes a great allround choice for the contractor. What’s more F.5000 Extra is also very cost competitive and delivers great value on a daily basis.”

With a coverage of 5m2 for applications of 3mm in thickness, F.5000 Extra comes in 23kg powder and 5l liquid capacities and can also be used as a feather edge compound to deliver even more value in one all-round solution. Where porous surfaces are to be covered Floorwise Pro Screed F5004 Universal Primer should be applied beforehand. T 01509 673974 www.floorwise.co.uk

Smart companies lead recovery in flooring At the end of a turbulent 2009 for the UK Floor Coverings industry, Plimsoll have taken a look back at the highs and lows of the last 12 months and looked forward to the threats and opportunities facing the market in 2010.

268 companies in the market are finishing the year in financial difficulty. David Pattison, author of the new report on the the top 1000 companies in the UK Floor Coverings industry explains, “Having clung on through the bad times many of these struggling companies are going to run out of time and fail just before the recovery really takes hold. Sadly, some of them are just too weak to carry on and there will be a spike of failures in the New Year. On the flipside, their demise will bring a welcome reduction in competitive pressure for those left”. However, among the gloom there have actually been some outstanding performers. Pattison says “A number of companies have managed to improve their performance in the latest year. They are part of a band of from The Stocklists

460 companies that prove success can still be achieved in the floorcoverings industry despite difficult trading conditions. They also prove that bad companies fail in a recession; good companies simply do not. These companies will lead the industry out of recession with some smart acquisitions and maintaining their recent success”. Pattison is also convinced the market is due a prolonged period of consolidation with the number of companies in trouble leading to heightened takeover activity. He explains “With too many companies chasing weakened demand it is inevitable that there are likely to be a number of high profile mergers and takeovers. In all honesty it’s long overdue. Once demand started to flag it was inevitable companies would be caught out. This period of consolidation is needed to sort out the dead wood. We have named 71 companies as the best acquisition prospects in the market”. T 01642 626422

OF THE TRADE

Richard Harris

Marketing Manager at F. Ball and Co. Ltd Steering our way through the current economic situation. F. Ball is fortunate in that demand for our products is still high and continues to increase. Our commitment to the flooring industry has been demonstrated by the completion of an £8 million investment programme in new manufacturing and training facilities, both enhancing our production capacity and promoting best practice.

Is price winning over quality in the current climate?

Only in the commodities area of the market, where the “cheapest is best” mentality has always been important.

What’s made the biggest difference to flooring installation in the last 10 years? Flooring contractors now try to follow best practice to ensure that there is no come back on their work and that they are paid in full.

What’s the next big thing for installation technology

Moving away from smoothing underlayments that contain natural rubber latex. At F. Ball, we have reformulated our market-leading general purpose smoothing underlayments, Stopgap Green Bag and Blue Bag, to remove the natural rubber latex content. This new generation of underlayments retains the same high performance characteristics of traditional latex products, while enhancing ease of application and extending the areas of use. These products also offer the additional benefits of low odour and protein-free properties, helping to prevent the growth and prevalence of bacteria, which enables them to meet the strict hygiene requirements of healthcare facilities, such as hospitals, and food preparation areas.

Is there still a skills gap in flooring installations? What skills require the most development?

Yes, unfortunately, there is still a skills gap in the industry, particularly with regards to subfloor moisture testing and treatment. We believe that all flooring contractors should be fully trained and competent in this area. Excessive moisture in the subfloor is probably the number one cause of floor failures but it can be easily avoided if all contractors acquire the skills to recognise, measure and treat subfloor moisture. F. Ball has just opened a new £1 million training centre to ensure that we deliver quality training with our products to the trade. Located at our manufacturing headquarters in Cheddleton, Staffordshire, the new training centre features state-of-the-art conference facilities and two large practical demonstration areas. Available to all flooring contractors, of all skills levels, courses will cover subfloor preparation and adhesive selection.

Does poor training and technique let down the performance of your products?

It can sometimes, but our products are designed to have a high degree of tolerance to give the installer as much flexibility as possible. 58

December 2009

“We are committed to implementing policies and processes that reduce the environmental impact of all aspects of our business”

How loyal are your customers?

If customers are able to buy the right branded product for their job, when they want it, at a price they are prepared to pay, why would they go anywhere else? F. Ball’s Contractor Loyalty Card was created earlier this year to thank and reward our loyal customers. As well as taking advantage of exclusive discounts and promotions, loyalty card members are also able to receive the latest product information before anyone else. Registration for the scheme is quick, easy and free-of-charge, with application forms available from F. Ball wholesalers and on our company website.

How much do consumers care about whether a product is British-made?

What’s the key market issue/challenge today?

From a consumer’s point of view, the main benefit of using Britishmade products is that they can be delivered quickly. Our national network of over 120 wholesalers ensures that F. Ball products are readily available throughout the UK and Ireland. Moreover, skilled management of our vehicle distribution fleet enables us to provide a next day product delivery service to distributors anywhere in mainland UK. Delivering products within the UK also helps us to minimise the impact of transportation on our environment.

Do you think customers are prepared to pay extra to protect the environment?

Sometimes, but I think it is the responsibility of manufacturers like us to lead the way by building environmental protection into our business as standard, not as an added extra. At F. Ball, we are committed to implementing policies and processes that reduce the environmental impact of all aspects of our business, including efficient use of resources, raw materials and energy, as well as reducing our waste and carbon emissions. This commitment has culminated in our manufacturing headquarters, being awarded ISO 14001 certification this year. All manufacturers should strive to reach the ISO 14001 environmental standard, where continuous improvement in environmental protection is built in to the psyche of the business.

If you could ask installers/fitters to change one thing, what would it be?

Please continue to improve your knowledge of new trends, techniques, and take advantage of training opportunities to refresh and enhance your skills.

How important is a national trade show to your business? It is vital for the trade to continue to exhibit its products. Harrogate in September is the natural home for the flooring trade and long may it continue.

An example of the above is the recently-introduced Tonal Trends range from modular flooring supplier FLOR by heuga. The range of loop pile carpet tiles was designed by textile colour consultant Cenk of Cenkstudio and consists of 21 new colours, each of which falls within eight nature-inspired chromatic groupings, including earthenware, woodcarving, foliage and graphite. 'We were inspired by natural elements such as stone, minerals and smoked wood, by the spectrum of colours found in foliage throughout the seasons and by the interplay of colours found in architecture: stone, steel, glass and brick,' said Cenk. 'For Tonal Trends, we used colours that give a depth and intensity to the materials without appearing saturated. We chose warm neutrals which work very well in combination with shaded greys and deeper aubergine, purple and green colours.'

These groupings form the basis of trends within interiors and design more generally, for example in the latest wallcovering, furnishing and fabric designs from the leading designers and manufacturers. The Tonal Trends palette is designed to connect and flow with the other elements that make up a room, ensuring that however adventurous customers choose to be with their carpet design, a harmonious aesthetic will be achieved throughout the scheme.

Brintons is another manufacturer with a reputation for delivering design-led product to the market, in this case for over 200 years. The company has worked with well known designers, in addition to its own highly skilled creative team, on both brand advertising and products and states that it is important to find a synergy when selecting whom to work with.

'The Llewelyn-Bowen Collection was developed because there was a real desire by Brintons and Laurence to promote patterned carpet through great design that creates stylish interiors which are accessible to everyone,' said a spokesperson. 'The resulting Llewelyn-Bowen collection by Brintons looks at the home as a stylish interior. Each item is influenced by some of Laurence’s favourite art movements.' 'This collection takes the very best design elements of history and gives them a contemporary twist.Whatever your personal style, you will find a design that both complements and accentuates your living space,' said Llewelyn-Bowen. Another example of successful collaboration is that of Brockway Carpets and Joanna Ramsden of Wools of New Zealand. This resulted in the launch of the company's Vogue collection last year, consisting of striped and plain carpets in four colour palettes and feature shades specified by Ramsden's forecasts for 2009. Brockway states that the colour palette demonstrates how different colours and designs can work together and has helped to broaden its appeal to a more design savvy audience.

Having its own on-site manufacturing means that it can afford to experiment with new ranges and test ideas relatively cost-effectively, says the company. The success of its Vogue collection is reported to have provided Brockway's team with a number of ideas to develop in the future.

News by Dennis Flower Ulf Moritz by Vorwerk Delano

“The skill of the designer is to take all of these influences in colour, design and textures to create a product that is commercially acceptable but different enough to move forward.” 'The new Durham Cathedral collection shows us revisiting pattern and it took around 18 months for us to be fully satisfied that we had it right. I am convinced that this is the way carpet trends are heading. Although this collection is quite a muted tone on tone nod to pattern, it shows that people are not afraid of pattern any more and particularly the younger end of the market are looking at this for their homes.'

Vorwerk chose to work with celebrated designer Ulf Moritz due to his profound knowledge of textiles proven by his many internationally successful creations. The result, described by Moritz as 'A prêt-àporter collection with a touch of Ulf Moritz couture', saw a collection of numerous loop structures, top-twisted threads in a frizzed look, fine pearl structures and pointedly large-nubbed surfaces and a voluminous shaggy look delivering an international perspective on interiors.

Colours range from violet to red, cobalt-green to blue, or gentler shades like honey, chocolate and camel. The company has established a strict vetting procedure before retailers can become Ulf Moritz by Vorwerk stockists. There is now an exclusive club of just 500 retailers worldwide which have qualified as members. Paul Hardiman is product development and design manager for Victoria Carpets and told Stocklists magazine: 'The influence of other elements used to create an interior is important, so I try and keep abreast of the trends that are moving in these areas.' By using the Internet and attending trade shows, he is able to react to emerging trends and states that the company also produces ranges that are different in colour, texture and design that may influence others. 'These are achieved by keeping one eye on what's happening in the market place and one on the future trends. The skill of the designer is to take all of these influences in colour, design and textures to create a product that is commercially acceptable but different enough to move forward. This is the fine line the designer treads!'

Contemporary Life is another fashion concious designer label in flooring and its work with Wools of New Zealand designer Joanna Ramsden has the latest Urban Life collection with a striking colour pallette including the trend-setting Fashionistas range which is updated twice a year for true trend tracking.

Most laid back among the designer set, perhaps, is the reknowned Jeff Banks for whom Joanna Ramsden rug designing is something of an obsessive hobby. The beneficiary of his prolific output is Asiatic Carpets and their original and colourful range bear testament to his talent.

Whitestone Weavers has also found that the key to a successful portfolio of carpet collections is keeping an eye on current trends, trialling new designs and colour, but by additionally ensuring time is allowed for this. Phil Hartley, the company’s sales director, said: 'Patience is the key when working on new product. Many companies can be time pressured whereas we would rather be entirely happy that the product is right before launching. Maintaining a broad view of the interiors industry is also imperative to keep your designs current.
