Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 5

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents
• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 10
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
THE STOCKLISTS December 2014
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Time flies!
Bloomsbury
Looking forward 2015 will hopefully bring more demand and growth back to the UK flooring market. To facilitate this, Edel Telenzo are working on new, attractive point of sale and the continued introduction of new ranges. Following the huge success of the Tube Collection and the proverb that ‘standing still means going backwards’, a stunning addition to the wool collection is set to be introduced in Q1 2015. Further introductions next year include several polyamide products. Polyamide has long been popular in mainland Europe and is now also gaining market share in the UK carpet market. Polyamide 6.6 creates super soft, high performing luxurious carpets which are exceptionally hardwearing and highly durable. Compared to polypropylene, polyamide 6.6 has better resistance to crushing and greater recovery after compression. It has a tighter and smoother molecular structure which reduces soil adherence and eases cleaning and it is also less flammable due to a significantly higher melting point. 2015 promises to be interesting!
“The last month of the year already and Christmas is right around the corner. The start of 2014 feels only a few months away. How much has happened since,” says Phil Hartley, CEO Edel Telenzo. “We have extended the hugely popular Tube Collection and introduced two beautiful 100% New Zealand wool qualities, Bloomsbury and Harrow. The Buying Group Show in Birmingham was hugely successful and it was good to be back at The Flooring Show in Harrogate which I am delighted to say was similarly ‘great’! Another very important initiative for us was the move of our stock to the UK, shortening our delivery time to once or twice weekly in all areas as we further focus on high service levels. So much done, but still more to come.”

Stepping up
The Academy for Excellence in Flooring has recently undertaken a bespoke course programme for flooring retailers looking to convert customers to higher value purchases of Quick-Step flooring.
Looking at the numerous up-selling opportunities present in Quick-Step laminate, hardwood and LVT flooring, the course delivered insight through additional product knowledge, features, benefits and the valuable additional revenue stream offered by accessories. Carried out over a single day, the course also included practical training in the Academy’s state-of-the-art training bays, giving retailers unparalleled experience and the confidence to fully engage with customers on the many advantages of Quick-Step flooring. Practical topics covered included moisture testing, planning, preparation and installation, as well as fault identification and responsibility, maintenance and general floor problems. “The course really did meet our expectations and we found it very helpful. The venue was well laid out and everything was explained well by our trainers, who not only knew their product, but also all the associated products that could be needed in the fitting process,” said Iain Cottrell of Tony Roberts Carpets. “Ultimately the course built our knowledge which will aid us to sell, but the practical side also heightened our confidence when talking about the product to customers.” The Academy for Excellence in Flooring is happy to tailor similar courses for retailers across the UK, working closely with them to ensure the content meets their needs. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk
A nose for value
With new specifications that see an increase in size and weight, but no increase in cost, stairnosings from floorwise bring better value than ever before and more metal for your money.
floorwise has brought together a comprehensive collection of stairnosings perfect for heavy-duty commercial work. With more metal, these nosings offer greater wear resistance than many others on the market. “Stairnosings have been a part of the floorwise portfolio for many years and in order that they remain a better choice for flooring installers working on all scales of project, we have given them more resilience,” explains Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. “While others look to increase prices or reduce quality, we are doing the exact opposite, improving quality while keeping our prices the same. This makes our stairnosings the best value around.” In its extensive range of PVC stairnosings, profiles, skirtings and trims, floorwise boasts exceptional value. Using a premium quality construction each item is available in a range of colours, so whether providing edge marking or a more subtle transition, the end result is always the same, lasting performance. Covering every conceivable need from compliant stairnosings to capping strips and cove formers, the range can be accessed from floorwise trade counters across the UK. “Here at floorwise we believe in offering the best performance, best quality and the best price right across our range, so whether screed or skirting, installers can be entirely confident that anything bearing the floorwise name will bring them reliable performance and great value. With coverage across the UK and in Ireland, our great value is easier to access than ever before,” concludes Richard Bailey. T 01509 673974 www.floorwise.co.uk

Success and succession
Brockway Carpets has announced changes to its board of directors with Charles Annable appointed as chairman and managing director, and his father Roy Annable becoming president in honour of his outstanding business achievements. The move is the latest in a strategy of senior level appointments this year by Kidderminster based Brockway, which saw the arrival of Shaun Lewis as sales director in June and the recent promotion of Steve Glover to national sales manager.
Charles takes over the role of chairman from Roy, who fifty years ago jointly acquired A G Brockway, then a small Axminster and Wilton carpet manufacturer dating back to the 1930s. “It is a huge privilege to take on this role from my father, who becomes president in honour of his tremendous devotion Roy Annable and hard work. I am extremely proud of his achievements and his great vision, which means we have a solid platform from which to build. “It’s an exciting time for the Brockway brand. Our major product development programme is underway and we’re in an excellent place to position Brockway as the UK’s premier manufacturer of beautiful, wool-rich carpets. He added: “We believe strongly in British craftsmanship and are proud to manufacture beautiful, award-winning carpets which offer great value for money for everyone – whatever your budget or taste. “Our highly skilled local workforce gives us a huge advantage over some of our overseas competitors.
Charles Annable
“We have a high calibre management team in place with Shaun and Steve leading our sales programme, and I look forward with much anticipation to driving the business ahead.” said Charles.
Circular recycling
Carpet manufacturers were encouraged to consider how their products could be realigned along Circular Economy principles at the industry’s first-ever ‘hands-on’ workshop organised by Carpet Recycling UK.
CRUK’s Steering Committee members explored a number of sustainable concepts that could potentially be applied to their own manufacturing processes during The Great Recovery event, led by the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce). The practical element included a thought-provoking ‘Teardown’ session where the composition of garments, shoes and attendees’ own carpet products were taken apart to see how they can be redesigned for reuse or material recovery. The RSA’s Circular Economy Expert, Mark Shayler invited participants to think about how they could improve their products’ sustainability across the entire supply chain taking into account design, composition, materials and longevity. While he was clearly in favour of designing for a long life to minimise resource usage, Mark did point out that products for shorter life usage should be designed accordingly with the needs of commercial clients and consumers in mind. He said: “How can we re-imagine carpet for a non-linear world? In my view, we should make flooring products that last as long as possible and be as easy to clean as possible. If they are designed specifically to have a shorter life then let’s look at single materials and all the strategies we can employ in order to make them recoverable, recyclable and that’s going to mean a change of business models. CRUK Director Laurance Bird commented: “Carpet is a challenging composite material to recycle, so this was a great opportunity to focus on innovative design and manufacturing for the future.” Vorwerk UK Director Ian Hammond said he found the event ‘very useful’, adding: “I’m planning to share these ideas at a similar small workshop in our plant at some future time.”
“It is a huge privilege to take on this role from my father. I am extremely proud of his achievements and his great vision, which means we have a solid platform from which to build.”
For Cormar Carpets Financial Director Robert Barker the workshop was ‘really interesting’. He said: “The deconstruction session was fascinating. While just one material type, such as 100% wool or polypropylene, is ideal for recycling at end-of-life, the current combination of materials to produce a stable and hardwearing carpet does present considerable challenges for recycling.”
As well as designing and manufacturing 15 different ranges, Brockway’s carpets come in hundreds of different colour choices across plain, heather and berber flecked styles.
The event stemmed from a presentation given by the RSA’s Sophie Thomas at CRUK’s Annual Conference in July. Her talk on ‘Redesigning Products and Systems for the Circular Economy’ explored how new approaches to sustainability issues could improve value and resource recovery from the flooring sector.

White glove van man
UK flooring wholesaler Green Tree Distribution has expanded its fleet once more by adding two new VW Crafter 2.0TDI BlueMotion to its fleet. The vehicles will complement the company’s growing business interests, with a significant rise in deliveries to retail customers since Green Tree’s attendance at The Flooring Show in Harrogate. The vehicle, which has been designated to support distribution to consumers across the South of England, is perfect for Green Tree’s White Glove Service, its home delivery service in which it delivers to consumers on behalf of retailers. With a length of 4.7m and height of 2.14m, as well as a load volume of 17m2, it is ideal for delivery to any location.
Recofloor, the UK’s national vinyl flooring recycling scheme, has added another accolade to its award-winning sustainable achievements by winning the Environmental Business of the Year Award at the first-ever Manchester Evening News Environment Awards in association with United Utilities. The unique Take Back and Recycling initiative, founded in 2009 by UK flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor, was recognised for its sustained success in diverting rising volumes of waste vinyl flooring from landfill – nearly 2,000 tonnes to date. Headquartered in Bramhall, Greater Manchester, Recofloor engages with all levels of the flooring supply chain, offering cost-effective collections of uplifted vinyl flooring and installation off-cuts to contractors and fitters across the UK with significant waste disposal cost savings. Smooth offcuts and safety flooring offcuts are recycled back into new flooring, with smooth uplifted flooring recycled into other products, such as road traffic cones. Recofloor Project Manager Michelle Brewer, who accepted the award at the October ceremony at the AJ Bell Stadium in Eccles, commented: “We’re delighted and honoured to win this award, which not only recognises our tremendous achievements in diverting rising amounts of flooring waste from landfill but also the considerable team effort throughout the flooring sector supply chain to make it happen.
Keeping in line with Green Tree’s dedication to the environment, the VW Crafter is designed to travel up to 25% further than before, and, due to its BlueMotion Technology, is more economical with fewer emissions. The vehicles’ introduction to the Southern fleet means that Green Tree can deliver into the London area knowing that the vehicles more than meet the LEZ emission standards. Kevin Lapthorn, Managing Director, says: “The addition of the VW Crafter to our fleet has been necessary to support the growing delivery needs of our retailer customers, and the consumer market. We selected the VW Crafter BlueMotion for its size, versatility and environmental impact. It is the perfect vehicle for our White Glove Delivery Service.” T 01785 818005 www.greentreedistribution.co.uk.
“Having just celebrated our fifth birthday with national events involving many of our 550-plus collectors with support from Altro and Polyflor, it’s great to be able to share even more good news!” added Michelle. T 0161 355 7618 www.recofloor.org
Taking the tablet
Recofloor has announced the winner of its iPad prize draw as Sean Dawson, Managing Director of Hull Flooring, who says the device is a ‘definite bonus’ that will be put to good use for his business. “It’s a real positive, without a doubt, as it will assist our project managers with processing information, such as specifications and taking photos, for presenting to our clients. It’s certainly a welcome addition to our technology portfolio,” said a delighted Sean on receiving the iPad from Recofloor’s Project Officer Carla Eslava while overseeing a retail flooring refurbishment site in Oldham. Hull Flooring was among the first companies to join the UK’s national vinyl flooring recycling scheme, founded in 2009 by UK flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor to divert waste material from landfill. By engaging with the entire flooring supply chain, the Take Back scheme collects smooth offcuts and safety flooring offcuts for recycling back into new flooring, with smooth uplifted flooring recycled into other products, such as road traffic cones. The prize draw was held for eligible members who had organised collections of waste vinyl flooring throughout September as part of Recofloor’s nationwide Fifth Birthday events during that month. Hull Flooring collected 4.5 tonnes of uplifted vinyl flooring in September with a similar amount expected for October across just two of their current sites. It has recycled 98 tonnes in total since joining Recofloor. T 0161 355 7618 www.recofloor.org 38 December 2014

The British Wool column 2014 - A very woolly year! It is hard to believe that another year has gone by and Christmas beckons with a slightly scary nudge that you are moving on to 2015!
How did that happen? Just where did the time go? At the British Wool Marketing Board - our biggest platform for promotion is the Campaign for Wool, it keeps us very busy and it has been a very positive year, many good things have been achieved. December seems the right time to look back at some of those activities that help keep the profile of wool in the customer’s frame.
Wool competition room schemes with wool
A collaboration with Homes & Gardens in October 2013 gave us a really inspirational magazine feature in March 2014. The ‘Design a Wool Room’ competition was a follow-on to the amazing Wool House exhibition - we wanted to see how other people would use wool to decorate a living room. Three different entry levels - professional, student designer and novice/design enthusiast were given a chance to show their creative edge! The only requisite of their entry was that they chose wool. The three winners - all very different showed how wool on the floor is integral to holding the look of a room together and how pattern can be perfect - as many of our woven manufacturers know well!
Wool trends at The Flooring Show
A major move to reinstate wool at The Flooring Show in Harrogate was seen as a key strand of our activity this year. We wanted to ensure that wool had a strong and dynamic presence at the UK’s leading carpet trade show. Although over the years, the big brands of wool had stopped coming; this year we were delighted that they supported our Wool Trends programme and there was a magnificent presence for wool! Key names - Ulster, Brintons, Axminster, Brockway, Adam, Cavalier and Bronte all took a space around a stunning trends installation done by The Campaign for Wool in association with Homes & Gardens magazine.
Consumer promotion with Homes & Gardens
Its vital that we keep the consumer interested in wool and so we linked our activity at The Flooring Show to a special wool promotional supplement in Homes & Gardens. This proved to be a great package - Homes & Gardens has excellent pedigree being one of the original interiors publications. Alternative Flooring, Axminster, Brintons, Cormar, Crucial Trading,Kingsmead, Gaskell, Roger Oates, Ulster and Whitestone Weavers all participated in the Wool Trends feature and this enabled us to give a really powerful message for wool that was connected to our manufacturers.
Wool Week and Wool Collection Interiors
In its fifth year, Wool Week was its most busy and well supported. Wool Collection Interiors - a curated exhibition at Southwark Cathedral pulled an impressive sixty plus wool products together - including a significant number of carpets - Alternative Flooring, Axminster, Brintons, Brockway, Jacaranda, Kingsmead, Roger Oates and Ulster all featured within the stylish fabrics, furnishings, flooring and art exhibits.Visitors and media both responded with enthusiasm giving British Wool, the Campaign for Wool and our partners great support.
New British Wool learning website
Educating the younger generation is always seen as a good way to ensure that your story is understood when they grow up. The lack of basic opportunities within the Key Stage curriculum showed us that we had to be creative to get schools to teach primary school children about sheep and wool. So, on britishwoollearning.com you will find sheep and wool in science and maths learning activities too! Great visual graphics and a fun and friendly style has helped make an engaging website for teachers and families. It is a simple even playful approach but it is getting the wool story into schools Let’s work together to ensure our young people know how brilliant real wool is.
40 December 2014
Merry Christmas to all our supporters in the wool industry and the many retailers that actively promote real wool carpets and rugs on a daily basis. We thank you for your support and wish you peace, joy and prosperity in the coming year!

More UK coverage for cork
As cork enjoys interest from homeowners, designers and architects looking for more sustainable interior finishes, leading supplier Granorte has assembled a team of highly experienced agents ready to bring the unique properties of nature’s wonder material to a growing audience.
The natural properties of cork make it an excellent choice for flooring and with an extensive collection of cork and cork hybrid floors, Granorte is peerless in its offering, making it the UK’s preferred choice. With eight new agents covering the UK, Granorte is ensuring that retailers and design practices right across the country can now enjoy the benefits that cork can bring. Kevin Parr, Granorte, comments: “With the desire for more sustainable interior finishes and the innovative approach to cork here at Granorte, we have found a growing demand for our products and so have strengthened our coverage of the UK. Now with eight new agents, we can ensure a personal and reliable service that will ensure retailers, designers and architects have fast and easy access to this wonder material no matter what the region.” Portugal-based Granorte uses cork waste from the production of wine bottle stoppers to create cork flooring, underlays, wall tiles, cork sheets and more. All harness the natural properties of cork and with the natural material being harvested from trees that live for over 200-years, it is considered one of the most sustainable interior finishes available today. Recycling winners in the vinyl finals
Ideas for an extendable compost bin and a modular roof tile with pre-drilled nail holes share the top £1,000 prize in Recofloor’s first-ever design competition to find an innovative product that will increase the market options for post-consumer vinyl flooring.
The two winning group submissions from Hertfordshire University students will each receive £500. One of the winners will also get the opportunity to work with Recofloor’s founders, flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor, to produce a prototype of their winning products. Launched in March by the UK’s award-winning national vinyl flooring recycling scheme, the competition was open to product design students at several Universities. Currently the main end-applications for uplifted flooring are traffic cones and other road calming products due to contamination levels of screed and scrim on the back of this material. With more than 40,000 tonnes of vinyl flooring waste arising each year in the UK, Recofloor wanted to identify and progress new applications that can accept more of this material type and utilise its specific properties to generate a higher return than existing recycling options. Recofloor’s mentor for the project Nichola Mundy praised the students’ inspiration and creative designs, which included a plant pot, bicycle helmet, relief shelter and a survival tool. She said: “This impressive and varied selection made the decision for our judging panel very difficult.” T 0161 355 7618 www.recofloor.org

DOMOTEX 2015 January17-20 , Hannover •
Destination Domotex Setting the agenda for innovation and inspiration in 2015 Domotex is heralding a happy new year for 2015 with impressive exhibitor support for its opening in Hannover between January 17 to 20. “After the highly successful 2014 show, the world’s carpet and flooring providers are seizing on the opportunity to get their new season’s products and collections in front of an international trade audience at Domotex 2015,” said Dr. Jochen Köckler, the Managing Board member at Deutsche Messe. “The positive exhibitor feedback on the new Innovations@Domotex showcase and the excellent exhibitor registration response are strong indicators of a great Domotex in the making for 2015.” Domotex, the world’s leading trade fair for carpets and floor coverings, will again enjoy strong international participation, with more than 1,300 exhibitors expected from around 60 nations. Spread across 12 exhibition halls, they will showcase their excellence, innovative flair and creativity in a product landscape that will encompass everything from textile and resilient floor coverings to parquet and laminate flooring to carpets in an array of materials, colors and designs. Innovations@Domotex premiered successfully at Domotex 2014 and will be back again this coming January. “The Innovations@Domotex showcase was extremely well received by the carpets and flooring industry. It gave exhibitors a series of display zones of distinctive architecture where they could stage their innovations in textile and resilient floor coverings, parquet and laminate flooring and modern hand-made carpets to maximum effect. The added exposure generated by this was a boon to subsequent talks with promising leads at the exhibitors’ main stands,” Köckler said. The exhibits for Innovations@Domotex were selected by an expert jury and published in a special guide in the run-up to the fair. This enabled visitors to carefully research the innovations of interest to them and plan their visit more effectively. In 2015, the Innovations@Domotex showcase will be extended to include an additional product category: application, installation and cleaning technology. Köckler: “This is yet another example of Domotex’s pivotal role as the trendsetter of the carpet and flooring industry. Domotex is rolling out this special platform to exhibitors of application tools, care solutions, and laying materials and equipment so that they too can generate added exposure for their product innovations.” www.domotex.de

Flower on Flooring The app-liance of science The march of technology is increasingly adding to the tools at the disposal of flooring retailers and contractors to increase efficiency and raise levels of customer service.
One of the most recent developments to achieve this is through the use of the app, short for application, which provides access to specialist online services when downloaded to a smart phone or computerised device, which are becoming increasingly evident within the flooring industry.
Karndean Designflooring reports that it has seen more than 15,000 downloads of its Augmented Reality app since its launch in October 2013, which allows homeowners to view its flooring products in their home before purchasing.
Head of digital Heather Horton says: “Our AR app is fully integrated with social media networks, so users can easily post their favourites to their own profile and gain feedback from their friends and followers.
“It’s proven to be a big success with our retailers, who see our AR app as an extra sales tool to help customers with their decision making process.”
Following this success, Karndean has also created an app for its Product Selector catalogue, which showcases more than 150 wood and stone designs, including full technical specifications. Each product can be viewed up close, allowing retailers the flexibility to select and demonstrate floor designs to customers. “Retailers are becoming much savvier when it comes to digital platforms, and they can see the benefits of utilising the right apps to support their business at the point of sale,” says Ms Horton.
Laser Measure invites readers to imagine a flooring industry with no pencils, scale rulers or scaled graph paper. Business development director Nigel Welsh says: “By now you’re either wondering how on earth could you do your job or you are intrigued and can see the many benefits. Put simply, you don¹t have to imagine anymore. MeasureSquare iPad mobile measuring solution is the new way to measure, plan, estimate and sell flooring of all types.”
F Ball’s popular RAG app gives on-site adhesive advice
F Ball and Co’s RAG app is a pertinent illustration, which is an interactive digital version of its Recommended Adhesive Guide, with the company stating that this is a key component in helping its contractor customers to gain access to new product information faster than ever. It is described as “the industry’s most trusted guide to adhesives and floorcovering compatibility, containing over 5,500 adhesive recommendations, all endorsed by their respective manufacturers, for floorcoverings from over 200 leading worldwide manufacturers”. Since 2012 the RAG has been available in a digital iRAG version, as an app for smartphones and tablets and downloadable from the App Store or Google Play.
The RAG app is updated all year round, making it easy to check adhesive compatibility through a smartphone or tablet computer. The company states that it also means flooring contractors can easily take advantage of its guarantee for product performance.

Describing itself as a pioneer in estimation software designed specifically for flooring sales professionals and flooring businesses, it believes its new app turns mobile measuring, planning, estimating, quoting and sales processes in the customer’s home into child’s play.
RFMS (UK) describes the Measure Mobile app as “the perfect tool for a busy estimator. Just measure a room’s dimensions and immediately draw it by entering its length and width, or choose a common room shape and adjust its dimensions.”

Products including underlay, adhesive and labour can also be assigned and bundled into pricing for inclusion in the estimate. For roll goods it also allows the specifying of pattern size, including drop patterns.

“Download the latest iPad edition from the App Store or contact Laser Measure for the latest trial commercial edition. Give it a go with a no obligation, free 15 day trial. How much is your time worth?” asks Mr Welsh.
Apps are now part of everyday life, says Mayne Computer Technology, and are playing more of an important role for the flooring sector. There are apps for virtually everything these days from banking to the weather. No more complicated installing and updating of software, just a simple click to download and run.
The company offers its own solution, and also the MeasureSquare Estimating and Planning software via Apps.
The Mayne Mosaic system is cloud based and covers all the areas from initial customer contact through to fitting and invoicing. The system is fully integrated and includes quotations, sales orders, stock, purchase orders, estimators and fitting diaries. Customer service is further improved by auto generating emails to customers to confirm orders, measure and fitting dates etc. The system can also link electronically to suppliers to check stock, raise purchase orders and ascertain delivery dates. Mayne Computer Technology also describes the MeasureSquare system, developed by Laser Measure, as easy to use allowing simple and complex plans to be produced quickly and accurately, thereby increasing efficiency, saving time, reducing mistakes and improving accuracy.

Further options such as lay direction, pattern start location, and the number of t-seams permitted in a room allows the user to see how roll products will be installed and how each will be used.
Proposals can be completed at the customer’s premises, including notes or additional products and services, which are then emailed to the client, allowing fast decision making and the capturing of the customer’s signature.
The WoolSafe Organisation’s Carpet Stain Cleaning Guide app is available in both Apple and Android formats, available in the Apple App Store or Google Play, and empowers users with the ability to quickly find the best treatment for spills and accidents. It provides step-by-step solutions, a complete listing of all cleaning products certified by WoolSafe and a map of approved professional carpet cleaners with geo-location.
Marketing manager Steve Bakker says: “When developing the app we wanted to make sure it was more than just a modified website and offered something genuinely useful to carpet owners, and anyone who wants to know how best to care for carpet. The simple step-by-step solutions should make it easy to get rid of most common spills and should that fail, a certified professional is available at the tap of a finger.” The Measure Mobile app from RFMS is a flexible tool

Victoria’s focus on growth
Hot on the heels of it’s acquisition of Abingdon Flooring and Westex,Victoria PLC is hungry for growth after reporting record first-half profits.
Agent Aldo
Profits before tax in the six months to September 27, 2014, rose from £0.5m to £2.4m on increased trunover of £40.5m, up from £34.5m. Westex is a key contributor to the improvement after its acqusition at the end of 2013 but the figures do not take account of the Abingdon deal which was concluded a few days after this reporting period. Abingdon turned over more than £75m in its last financial year and so will make a massive difference to the next set of Victoria results.
With 27 years in the carpet industry, Aldo first began his career at Westex Carpets and has been operating as an independent agent for the last 18 years, building up a network of retailers throughout the region.
However, exceptional items of £8.12m meant the group reported an overall loss before tax of £5.7m for the six-month period. Geoff Wilding, Chairman of Victoria PLC commented: “Progress continues but although Victoria has grown significantly in the last 12 months, the Group’s revenues still represents only a tiny fraction of the markets in which it trades. There is both potential for sales to increase in line with the market and the opportunity to grow market share. “The board believes it has an appropriate strategy to further improve the Group’s performance and is focussed on its execution.
Crown Floors by Balta has announced the appointment of a new sales representative for Yorkshire Counties and the North East of England in the highly experienced guise of agent Aldo Berettoni.
“I’m delighted to now be representing the Crown Floors brand,” comments Aldo Berettoni. “Its growing status as one of the principle brands within the UK carpet sector is testament to the hardwork of everyone at Balta and I will be bringing this same ethos, ensuring that the brand continues to serve retailers with great value and reliable service. It will also be exciting to bring the strength of Crown Floors to new retailers within the region too.” Aldo Berettoni
Aldo joins a growing band of Crown Floors by Balta representatives across the UK, as the brand looks to strengthen its grip right across the country, its reliable UK-served cut length service providing fast supply of carefully considered UK-focused ranges. T 0800 0773301 www.crownfloors.co.uk
