The three kings of the carpet world In the run up to Christmas, it’ll be wise to remember these three leading brands on offer from Associated Weavers. In an increasingly brand-conscious environment, we believe you can benefit from our distinctive identities in a crowded market place. The hero brand – Invictus. Invincible comfort, developed this year through the latest generation of yarn technology. iVinci SDO StainAway is the multi width carpet that combines appealing softness with superb colours and outstanding stain resistance. Pegasus, Perseus, Orion and Sirius are the range stars to look out for this Christmas. The unique brand – iSense. Unrivalled because iSense has offered the perfect combination of softness and resilience since 2014. This ultra-hard wearing range features polyamide fibres with amazing bounce-back qualities and carries a full 20-year warranty. Adoration, Illusions, L’amour, Seduction, Serenity, Splendour and Surprise will all take your breath away. The versatile brand – StainAway. Already a firm favourite in our portfolio, market-leading StainAway will be relaunched with a bang in 2016. It has a deserved pedigree because this family-friendly carpet has always met value-for-money price points. Bleach cleanable and in multi width variants, StainAway will be the brightest star to shine next year.

Carpet&FlooringReview Silky sheen success
Satino is luxury captured in beautiful carpet, the latest in incredibly soft fibre innovation from Balta.
Using specially developed polyamide yarns with a high number of superfine filaments, Satino makes a carpet that’s not only invitingly soft, but one that has a delightful of-the-moment silk-like sheen, a truly indulgent and sumptuously comfortable carpet for modern life. Playing with the light through constantly shifting tones, the look is an exclusive one with appeal to those seeking luxurious finishes. Thanks to the durability and resilience of polyamide, Satino carpets also promise longevity alongside their beauty, the perfect recipe for success. Balta will launch this latest innovation with two developed for the UK collections in Satino Royale and Satino Romantica. With a refined colour palette in-tune with the style demands of UK homeowners, these new resilient ranges bring a high fashion look without the high fashion price tag. In 12 colours and in a 2,500g/m2 weight, Satino Royale brings a 5/32nd cutpile saxony, while sister product Satino Romantica also brings 12 colours, this time in a 1,650g/m2 1/10th cutpile saxony. Both carpets are available in four and five-metre widths on Twinback insulating backing. This innovation makes Satino carpets easier to install, even more comfortable and can help to save on domestic energy use.
Accessible innovation
With safety, acoustic and decorative flooring, the Commercial Flooring Collection from Itec Contract Floors is certainly diverse enough to provide contractors with a great range of high performance vinyl flooring. Yet thanks to inspiring design and 2 and 4m width options on every floor, the collection is also perfect for end users looking for style and performance combined.
“There is no doubt that homeowners in the UK are really embracing super soft styles and this trend is one that looks set to be big news over the next couple of years,” says Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Group. “With the introduction of Satino we are giving retailers the option to make the most of the trend with a range that offers incredible softness, the right look and good longevity with a price tag that leaves others a distant second.” T +32 5662 2211 www.baltagroup.com
The collection has been designed to offer practical, lowmaintenance and highly durable flooring suitable for a range of demanding environments; from education and healthcare to offices, public spaces and leisure, vinyl flooring from Itec Contract Floors is proving itself in a growing number of locations. Designed and manufactured in Belgium at IVC Group’s state-of-the-art facility, Itec flooring leads the way in style and performance, offering unparalleled design and technical innovation. “IVC Group is considered among the world leaders in vinyl flooring innovation and so it is only natural that Itec Contract Floors have already built a reputation for excelling in both design and performance,” says David Bigland, managing director. “Our in-house design team is geared to developing styles that keep Itec at the forefront of the sector while our R&D is second to none, ensuring that our products are technically innovative.” Itec Contract Floors was the first manufacturer to introduce heterogeneous safety flooring in striking wood and stone designs and has pioneered the use of four-metre wide flooring that leads to a better aesthetic in open plan spaces, as well as reducing potential failure spots. This has been further improved with the Invisiweld chemical system that delivers a joint free from welding material, making it less visible and stronger. 2 and 4m wide flooring from the Itec Commercial Flooring Collection is available from distributors nationwide for fast delivery. Showroom shows off
A showroom in Scotland liked Heckmondwike FB’s Array and Broadrib fibre bonded carpet tiles so much, they chose them for their own floor!
Kristoffersen Carpets and Flooring chose 60m2 of Array Peacock with complementary Broadrib in Peacock for the refurbishment of its Newtongrange showroom near Edinburgh, after seeing samples of both ranges. “We liked the eyecatching design of the Array and Broadrib tiles and the colour Peacock also complements our new corporate colours, which is great!” explains Leigh Ross, Operations Manager at Kristoffersen Carpets and Flooring. “Another major benefit with Heckmondwike’s fibre bonded carpet is that it can be cut into shapes without the risk of it raveling or fraying. We are really pleased with the end results and have had lots of positive feedback from customers!” “It’s the ultimate compliment if a flooring showroom chooses your product for their own premises!” said John Barraclough, Area Sales Manager for Heckmondwike FB. Heckmondwike FB’s Array carpet tile, from the Creative range features a mid-width rib design and a charcoal background, which is enhanced with a subtle linear pattern. The range now consists of 12 colour options including Peacock, Blue, Black, Red, Lime, Purple, Magenta, Copper, Emerald, Fuchsia, Marble and Violet. Polyflor has relaunched their popular Polysafe Wood fx PUR sheet vinyl safety flooring with the addition of brand new high clarity wood effect designs.
Building on the established success of the classic designs within the Wood fx range, a new series of six on-trend wood styles have been introduced, some featuring a wider plank format for a more contemporary look. The fresh additions to Polyflor’s enlarged collection of 12 Wood fx designs are Oiled Oak, Sun Bleached Oak, Roasted Limed Ash, Tropical Pine, Aged Oak and Nero Oak. Providing sustainable wet slip resistance in busy, public areas where there is a risk of water spillage, Wood fx is suitable for heavy commercial areas, including healthcare, education, housing, retail, leisure and office environments. Ideal for creating a homely and nurturing ambience, these wood effect designs are also suitable for use in dementia friendly environments. The Polysafe Wood fx range features imperceptible, built-in aluminium oxide safety particles integrated through the product’s performance layer, providing virtually invisible sustainable slip resistance. Laminates gain share
The market is, however, subject to strong competition from other smooth floorcoverings products, particularly luxury vinyl. The share of wood is also affected by the decline in demand for laminates which began around 2008. However, over the last year, there have been signs that wood and laminates are once again beginning to regain share of the overall floorcoverings market.
UK Market for Wood & Laminate Floorcoverings 2011-2017 by Value (£m)
400 Value (£m at MSP)
The UK’s wood floorcovering sector, which includes solid wood, engineered wood and laminates, currently accounts for an estimated 16% of the total flooring market. Growth has been positive since the low point in 2011, and demand for wood floorcoverings has continued to improve into 2015, with improvements in the underlying economy, a recovering housing market, and higher levels of business confidence and investment all helping to boost growth.

Fcst Fcst Fcst Laminates, the largest product category, continues to act as a strong driver of growth in the overall wood floorcoverings market, and while both engineered and solid wood have become much more affordable, laminates’ excellent environmental credentials have made them an increasingly popular choice in the commercial/contract sector. Sales of laminates continued their upward trend in 2014 and into 2015, benefiting from growth in the housing market and strengthening consumer confidence.
The solid and engineered woods sector has been less volatile than laminates and also returned to growth in 2012 after four years of decline in 2008-11, which had seen the value of the market fall by an estimated 14%. Growth for the sector in 2014 was estimated at 3%. “While domestic DIY installations of wood floorcoverings are still below pre-recession levels there is a degree of pent-up demand in the market, and consumer confidence continues to improve as a result of low inflationary pressures and a strengthening economy,” said Jane Tarver, AMA Research. ”Despite reasonable growth, the market value is forecast to remain some 13% lower than its pre-recession peak in 2007.” Current forecasts indicate annual growth of around 3-4% pa to 2017, with the annual rate of growth falling slightly in 2018-19. The market is estimated to reach a value of around £335m in 2019. T 01242 235724. www.amaresearch.co.uk

Carpet&FlooringReview
A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!
Next year awaits now! 2016 already stands to be a really exciting year for wool carpet and we want all retailers to be part of that!
December 2015
It is hard to accept that we are once again at the end of another year! Time certainly flies by. It’s good to see though that we have seen many exciting and innovative activities in the wool carpet world this year and the industry grasping all the challenges with real might and coming together to push new ideas and promotions forward.
At British Wool and The Campaign for Wool, we have put a major slant on getting the real benefits of wool and the fabulous choice of product available in wool out to retailers and consumers. We have worked hand-in-hand with consumer publications on major wool features expanding on the reasons why wool is a great investment. Our Homes & Gardens feature in October’s issue included a look at top style trends too and the fabulous Homes & Antiques 8-page feature portrayed a compelling list of reasons to choose wool!
British Wool Carpet of the Month
Anatolia by Ulster Carpets may have been around for a few years but it offers contemporary traditional style with real elegance which is perfect for period homes. It is an 80% wool 20% nylon woven axminster and is suitable for extra heavy wear. It has five options on widths and is available in runner width too - providing every potential size needed for the home. There are eleven colourways and three different designs - from neutrals and golds to the rich shades of red.
Launching our new WooliBook at The Flooring Show in Harrogate - we were delighted to get so much positive feedback from the retail trade. This expands the science of wool and directly links this to its performance attributes. Once you see this - you really appreciate the fact that wool can outperform manmade fibres in so many ways!
The Flooring Show has really come back to life and we like to think our efforts which are funded by the sheep farmers of the United Kingdom and the increasingly united approach by wool carpet manufacturers has played a big part in that. How fantastic to see so many of our industry working alongside each other and even collectively donning pink sunglasses to promote the recent ‘cool to buy wool’ promotion from Wool Carpet Focus Group!
Next year awaits now! It already stands to be a really exciting year for wool carpet as carpet and rug retailers are given a new showcase event in London. Wool Floor Show London will be held at Chelsea Football Club, Stamford Bridge on 23rd and 24th March and already major names are signed up. Axminster, Brintons, Brockway, Bronte, Cavalier, Cormar, Crucial Trading, Manx, Kingsmead, Mr Tomkinson, Stevens and Graham,Westex and others are in the line-up with more coming soon. This is a totally fresh approach to promoting wool - product booths will be matched by inspirational wool style spaces. Seminars, success stories and the launch of WoolRetailer.com live at the event will provide an exciting programme within the event. And its free admission too!
The new International Wool Carpet & Rug Awards are to be held at Chelsea FC during the event - of which more to come later! 2016 certainly promises to be a very exciting year and we want all retailers to be part of that!
Retailer pre-registration for Wool Floor Show London is open now at WFSL@campaignforwool.org

Fast fix for floors
Mapei has launched Ultrabond Eco VS90 Plus as the latest addition to its range of Ultrabond Eco Adhesives. Ultrabond Eco VS90 Plus is a ready to use, light beige paste, which benefits from a fast, strong initial grab, allowing traffic after only 3-5 hours. This universal high temperature acrylic, wet-bed dispersion adhesive, bonds vinyl/rubber sheet and tile, PVC-backed carpet and luxury vinyl tiles with ease. The adhesive can be used with underfloor heating systems.
Ultrabond Eco VS90 Plus is extremely easy to apply with good peel strength with high resistance to shear stresses, with the added advantage of being a high temperature adhesive. It can also be specified to install floor coverings in many environments including those subjected to chairs with castors. Ultrabond Eco VS90 Plus is solvent-free and classified as EC1 Plus under the GEV EMICODE accreditation system. The environmentally friendly adhesive is extremely versatile in its use and consequently has a universal application range, being ideal for bonding many textile floorcoverings with all common backings. The range now includes seven high quality adhesives for the installation of all types of resilient floorcoverings. These adhesives offer exceptional performance, as well as providing a raft of health and eco-benefits. T 0121 508 6970. www.mapei.co.uk
No shocks Stopgap
F. Ball and Co. Ltd.'s high performance smoothing underlayment, Stopgap 1200 Pro, has been used in the refurbishment of the Dutch branch of audio communications company Plantronics. Stopgap 1200 Pro offers a minimum preparation, maximum performance flooring solution, for use over subfloors which are contaminated with adhesive residue, without the need for priming or mechanical removal of the old residue. After finding the existing sand/cement subfloor of the Research and Development (R&D) Centre at the Plantronics building in Emmen to be suitably dry, and the adhesive well bonded, contractors from Boer Vastgoed Groep BV applied a 3mm layer of Stopgap 1200 Pro to the 500m2 area. Thanks to the excellent self smoothing and fast drying properties that Stopgap 1200 Pro offers, the R&D Centre was ready to receive new floorcoverings after only four hours. As an international electronics company the Plantronics R&D Centre required areas of conductive/anti-static flooring, incorporating a conductive copper mesh tape to protect against electro static discharge, which could otherwise create a fire hazard or damage electronic equipment. Contractors selected F. Ball's Styccobond F57 Conductive Acrylic Adhesive to secure new Forbo static control vinyl floorcoverings. A solvent free, fibre filled adhesive, Styccobond F57 has strong initial tack and high bond strength. Speaking of the work, Frank Westen of Wonen of Weston Tapijt & Musselkanaal said: "This was the first time that we had the chance to work with Stopgap 1200 Pro, but it definitely won't be the last. The speed and ease of use that it brought to what would otherwise have been a challenging installation were vital for completing the job in time. "Just as importantly, we needed an adhesive that was guaranteed for use with conductive floorcoverings, because we were working in an area designed for the development of new technology. For a job this important, we had to choose Styccobond F57." T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk
Renovation innovation
Mapei’s Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 is a fibre reinforced self-levelling compound, specifically designed for the renovation or refurbishment of existing subfloors. The high coverage, low VOC screed can now be applied to a thickness of 3-40mm, in one application, and is suitable for prepared concrete, screed, stone, ceramic, timber (plywood, chipboard, plywood, parquet) and terrazzo.
Suitable for both commercial and domestic applications, Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 is ideal for smoothing and levelling floors ready to receive tiled finishes, resilient floor coverings or wood flooring. It can also be used alongside capillary underfloor heating and electric undertile heating systems. Mapei’s Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 reflects the company’s high environmental credentials and is rated GEV Emicode EC1 for low emissions of VOC, during mixing and working of the application. It provides an approx. coverage of 6m2 per 25kg at a thickness of 3mm. T 0121 508 6970. www.mapei.co.uk 30 December 2015

Thanks to the funders
Significant support from Carpet Recycling UK’s core funders has been crucial in the industry’s achievement of diverting rising volumes of waste carpet from landfill within the last decade. Last year’s 28% landfill diversion rate saw waste carpet given a ‘second life’ in various applications.
Recognising the commitment and contribution from core funders and members, CRUK’s Director Laurance Bird thanked their financial supporters for ‘providing the vital impetus to the recycling and landfill diversion cause’. CRUK’s core funders are Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/Headlam, Desso, Ege, Milliken, Balsan and Marlings. “Without their unstinting support, the industry would not be where it is today; that is keeping raw materials out of landfill and in the supply chain,” he says. “With their help, we have already surpassed our first major milestone of 25% diversion from landfill by 2015. So we and the environment have a lot to thank them for!” Since joining CRUK, Cormar Carpets has focused on carpet waste streams from their manufacturing processes. “What we originally classified as waste can now be considered a valued raw material,” comments Robert Barker, Cormar’s Finance Director. “We’re seeing more value as the carpet waste market develops, due to CRUK’s active work; plus our customers’ businesses are now beginning to benefit too.” Kate Burnett, Milliken’s Strategic Marketing Manager comments: “Milliken has long understood that ethical behaviour is not just the right thing to do, it is key to sustainable growth. That’s why Milliken has been proud to support CRUK from the outset to ensure the development of viable
practical recycling solutions that meet our clients’ needs and improve the environmental footprint of our industry.” Laurance estimates their membership currently covers around 35% of the carpet supplied to the UK market, but so much more could be achieved with greater industry support and ‘the whole supply chain focusing on helping to avoid landfilling carpet and create value by recycling’. CRUK’s activities helped the UK carpet manufacturers to achieve zero waste to landfill in 2012. It’s a fantastic achievement that needs more support to maintain this momentum. Next steps, according to Laurance, are to encourage manufacturers to assist in recovery of clean installation offcuts using their logistics networks and to advise customers on opportunities for recycling offcuts, as well as old carpets. More work is needed to find higher-value outlets. Laurance adds: “Our work to date means we can now effectively offer the whole ‘circular’ package. Manufacturers are helping their customers with their clients’ waste carpet, while examining how their own products can be improved with sustainability in mind. With valued support from our core funders and members, we continue to do a great job but more support is critical. Will you join us?” T 0161 440 8325

NEWS The Art of the Academy
A Quick-Step Master Installer, expertly accredited at the Academy for Excellence in Flooring, has transformed the tired and slightly shabby art-room floor of Stockport Grammar Primary School. The school had originally planned on replacing the existing safety flooring after numerous repairs had finally rendered it unsightly and unserviceable and turned to three local companies for tender. Among those called in to suggest a suitable replacement were Cheshire’s The Wood Flooring Company, home to Quick-Step Master Installer David Bacchus. “Repair work to the existing safety flooring was evident all-over and remedial patches welded into the existing floor really spoiled the aesthetics, not to mention the down-time and costs associated with continued repair,” explains David Bacchus. “Meeting with the department head, the resident teacher and maintenance manager, I soon discovered that there was a desire for something less drab and corridor like, a solution that would lift the floor away from monotony yet also remain entirely serviceable and easy to maintain despite intensive use. The head of maintenance was also keen for something that could be partially replaced without the need for specialist installers.” David’s answer was the new Ambient CLIC+ range from the Quick-Step LIVYN luxury vinyl collection. Featuring revolutionary Stain Guard technology, Ambient CLIC+ features a fully sealed top layer that is exceptionally easy to clean, so that even tough art-room stains such as ink and paint can be wiped away. Add in a Class 33 commercial use rating and with the Uniclic Multifit system that allows fast and easy installation and replacement, the floor certainly ticked all the right boxes. “The stylish and modern Grey Slate, it’s contemporary look sitting well in the backdrop of the art-room. It took us a little time to win-over the sceptics to the potential benefits of the floor, mainly because it was perceived to be a more expensive option than a conventional sheet vinyl or safety flooring product. However, after tabling the tendered options, the school found us slightly cheaper than rival bids.” The project to install the 120 square metres of floor took place during the October half-term break with materials delivered four days prior so that the floor could acclimatise to its new surroundings. The Wood Flooring Company had allotted three days for installation, though managed to complete the job in just 20 working hours. The reaction to the floor has been extremely positive, with David enjoying a spin-off job at a member of staff ’s home, underlining that the expertise and assurance that comes with the Master Installer scheme reaps rewards. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk
Tribute to Geoff Brown
Very sadly, one of London's best known flooring salesmen has passed away. Geoff Brown, pictured, worked in the trade all his life from leaving school at 18 until his death on November 1st at 82. Notably, he represented three generations of the Ratcliffe family with their underlay businesses from 1960 for the following 55 years. He also worked for many other flooring manufacturers from his office and various bases in North London. Away from work he was a tennis enthusiast and held the post of President of the Lawn Tennis Association for three years in the mid1980's, standing next to Boris Becker as he collected his first Wimbledon Title. Peter Ratcliffe noted that there probably hadn't been a single week in all those years that Geoff and the Burnley-based company have not been in discussion over matters of business. He is survived by his wife Lilla and daughter Holly. His memorial service was held in Hendon and attended by many of his friends and colleagues from the flooring trade.

Flower on Flooring
by Dennis Flower
Joint efforts deliver best results Recent years have seen a number of developments in our industry resulting in market growth for certain types of floor coverings, while others have seen the market remain static in some areas, or even shrink in others.
There are indications that laminate flooring currently falls into the last two options. While these reports are inevitably a generalisation of the overall market, there will always be bright spots within any given areas, two of which are outlined below, proving that opportunities remain for those showing the most commitment.
Our two examples notably focus on a combination of influences to match the demands of the market. While the first looks at the meeting of traditional and contemporary design, our second examines how to successfully combine innovation with the use of the best technological options. Olsen Driftwood by Woodpecker
Since Scandinavian style has stepped onto the scene so have ashen floors, and Woodpecker reports its new-for-2015 white and grey Olsen designs have quickly found demand.
"A rustic twist on this minimal look is set to grow in popularity in 2016, a trend already seen in the uptake of Olsen’s modern-rustic Driftwood with its cool neutral tones," the company continues. "Yet, it seems traditional golden oak flooring isn’t to be forgotten any time soon as Natural Oak remains on the top spot as the bestselling Olsen laminate for the second year running. With similar warm oak designs following closely behind, it’s clear that the cosy look of a classic oak floor is still desirable."
Woodpecker describes its Olsen as a "practical and authentic AC4-rated laminate".
Moving on from the concept of combining traditional with more current and emerging trends, another merger is proposed by Parador. While continuing to focus on the need for innovation, the company additionally states that this effect is further enhanced when combined with the best level of technology.
Describing its flooring options as combining "fascinating looks, the latest technology and straightforward installation", the company further states that its products for next year will provide further evidence of this, in the form of two new synchronous textures in natural matt and antique matt, which have been designed to meet the demands for authentic looks and touch properties.
"Oak remains a perennial favourite and yet shows itself to be somewhat calmer again with slight plays of colour and in a wider plank format, for example as a wide plank in our Trendtime 8 range," Parador continues.
All in all, 14 new oak decors have been newly developed by the company.
"What is good can always get better. For this reason we have improved our click connection resulting in Safe-Lock PRO. Safe-Lock stands for stability and fitting accuracy without tools, thus making installation even easier," says the company.
Focusing on the topic of flooring trends in general, Woodpecker says that some are ever changing, while others just "simply stick", similar to the world of interior design in general.
"This split demand for contemporary and traditional style has shown in the sales of Olsen laminate over the past year with new designs and classic colours selling equally well," the company states.
“Recent years have seen a number of developments in our industry resulting in market growth for certain types of floor coverings, while others have seen the market remain static in some areas, or even shrink in others.”
from The Stocklists
Parador further explains that its flooring designs are characterised by durability and peace of mind and a new lifetime guarantee for ranges within the Classic and Trendtime Collection for domestic use provides further evidence of the company's claim.
The two examples above show that there is always room for creativity and innovation in every market, especially for those intrinsically linked to the world of interior design. The former staid and subdued designs that dominated the UK market have been joined by more adventurous options in all areas.
There will, of course, always be a market for the options that blend easily with others, but there is a growing trend that is seeing increasing demand for floors that stand out and allow homeowners to make more bold statements and allow them to create their desired end effects to emphasise their individuality.

Win-win with the carpet crusher
Carpet Recycling UK members Horne Brothers based in Sleaford, Lincolnshire recently took delivery of a Kenburn ‘Carpet Crusher’ to enable them to recycle their old uplifted carpet and underlay waste.
Neil Horne commented: “We’ve been looking at a variety of options to recycle our waste and when talking to Kenburn it immediately became apparent to us that we were dealing with a company who were highly regarded within the industry as the market leader for recycling post-consumer carpet and underlay waste. Not only do Kenburn supply the machine itself to crush the waste they also provide the logistical advice for the transportation of the compacted waste to “waste to energy” plants where the waste is used to power concrete kilns as a replacement fuel for coal. “As part of our commitment to the environment and our terms within the MOD contract we hold, we’re now operating on a ‘zero to landfill’ policy which not only prevents hundreds of tonnes of waste carpet and underlay going to landfill every year, it also at the same time saves us thousands of pounds a year in skip costs so it’s a ‘win-win’ scenario,” he said. Working in partnership with Carpet Recycling UK, Kenburn visit contractors and retailers throughout the UK offering free impartial advice on how best to recycle new and old carpet waste as well as new and old rubber and PU underlay waste. Thinking of joining a buying group? We can help you decide....
Read our Buying Groups Factsheet on page 64 for information about the benefits of joining a buying group and how to choose the right one for you.
Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. See page 64 for the full details...

NEWS The vinyl revival
International reports have given a bullish forecast for vinyl flooring which predicts 10% annual growth from 2015 to 2022, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc.
The global resilient flooring market size is projected to reach $92.47Bn by 2022 with Europe accounting for over $30Bn of the overall resilient flooring sales. The report comments: “After the European debt crisis and economic slump, expansion of commercial sector and investment in new outlets has offered essential momentum leading to the revival of industry growth. Europe accounted for over 35% of the overall demand in 2014, and is anticipated to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to the demand for new products coupled with replacement of obsolete products.” Commercial applications accounted for over 55% of the overall volume share in 2014, and are expected to continue their dominance over the next seven years but residential applications are expected to gain prominence over the same period with a ttrend in urban living partly responsible for the gains. The forecast coincides with reports from Domotex trade show which opens in Hannover in January. “One thing we can already say with certainty is that LVT tiles and planks will be one of the big attractions at the show. And no wonder, with all those innovative printed designs and textures to choose from,” Dr. Jochen Köckler of Domotex said. The LVT offering at the event will be much bigger than ever before. The show’s parquet and laminate flooring section will also be bigger, with exhibitor numbers and exhibition space both noticeably up on 2015. The event is expected to feature around 200 exhibitors from the parquet and laminate flooring industry, plus over 180 providers of application and installation technology. Domotex 2016, which runs from 16 to 19 January, is expected to feature some 1,400 exhibitors from more than 60 countries.

WoolRetailer.com is a new website for wool retailers and offers quality retailers an opportunity to be part of a promotional platform that brings both retailers and consumers together. This latest promotional concept from the Campaign for Wool will be launched officially at the new Wool Floor Show London in March 2016. The website will set a standard for retailers by encouraging and enabling better wool knowledge and supporting in-store promotions with easy to use POS and marketing materials. An accredited woolretailer.com retailer has to achieve a level of knowledge and will gain a woolretailer.com certificate and wool specialist status. Retailers will benefit from website promotion to consumers in leading interiors press, social media and through online SEO. Consumers visiting the site will find up-to-date trends, style and product
information, wool buying guides and then be able to do a postcode search under where to buy wool. Register your interest at woolretailer@campaignforwool.org It’s not just consumers, contractors are also spending more time than ever online, be it on traditional websites or on social media. F. Ball have been striving to make it easier for contractors to access information about their products by providing a variety of ways for them to access it; via social media, through online video, and with the help of dedicated apps. by Rita Bancroft Rita is Director of Bancmarketing Ltd and has over 25 years of marketing experience with a proven track record in both business to business and business to consumer multi-channel marketing.
Richard Harris, Marketing Manager explains, ‘at F Ball, social media in particular has created many more ways of communicating and interacting with customers, naturally through Twitter, and also more recently through innovations such as the video streaming platform, Periscope. As the way our customers consume information changes, we always try to change with them by embracing new technology with open arms.’ Alternative embraces technology to help both retail customers and inspire consumers. It’s ‘Make Me a Rug‘ facility on their website gives consumers and retailers the opportunity to design a bespoke rug or runner. With thousands of combinations available, this technology gives the user choice of a particular size of rug, style and colour and gives you a price to suit the budget. Alternative has also a developed an indispensable trade section of their website. Retailers are given unique access which allows them to work out their trade price for the ‘Make Me a Rug’ facility and gives them full access to downloadable versions of price lists and brochures and technical specifications. What’s more this section of the website contains Alternative’s image store where all the beautiful and carefully curated Alternative imagery is available to download

Lorna Haigh, Head of Marketing highlights the benefits, ‘this resource is great for social media and advertising campaigns. Retailers can even search for particular images whether it be stair runner, rug or patterned carpet and download straight to their files.’ A fantastic resource at the retailer’s fingertips. Axminster Carpets believe technology holds the key to a successful future and have invested to put the latest technology at the heart of their marketing – and now offer customers the opportunity to view carpets in a variety of rooms via a new App and online room selector. The new Room Selector allows customers to imagine what the carpet would look like in their own homes. Hilary Clements Marketing Manager explains, “as a manufacturer of a number of patterned collections we appreciate more than anyone how difficult it is for a customer to visualise a room from a small cutting. By holding our rooms and carpets digitally, we can quickly float in a wide selection of carpets for a customer to see in an actual room – something with traditional photography was often cost prohibitive and time consuming. We have proven this improves conversion rates for patterned carpets.”

Marketing insights – Online, Apps and Technology continued Most people realise that a floor is a vitally important foundation for your interior and mustn’t be neglected. Yet it’s difficult to judge precisely what difference a floor makes and what happens in an interior when you make a choice. After all, you only choose a floor once, and you only see the final result after it’s been laid. How other options might have turned out remains guesswork. Quick-Step is a pioneer when it comes to developing intelligent floor systems, and it thought long and hard to come up with a solution for this issue as well. Virtual Reality makes the impossible possible, and ensures that you can study the effects of different floors in a given space. Because with an Oculus Rift - glasses that enable you to look around in a virtual world - you can experience it yourself. Choose a residence that fits your style and then try out countless different floors to see what they do for the interior.

Designed to support independent retailers at the point of sale, www.karndean.com/floorstyle - is a one stop, online design lounge featuring their full catalogue of wood and stone effect designs. Mobile and tablet friendly, the free tool allows retailers to demonstrate individual products to customers in a room of their choice. With an impressive range of interiors to choose from, retailers can also showcase floor designs in various décor schemes, add in design strips and compare favourite designs side by side. “With so many trends, designs and styles available, our Floorstyle tool gives independent retailers the ability to go one step further in helping their customers choose the right floor design in store,” explains Heather Horton, head of digital and communications at Karndean Designflooring.
Quick-Step creates virtual roomsets
Alongside their Augmented Reality App which has had over 30,000 downloads, this latest Residential Floorstyle update means retailers have Karndean Designflooring’s entire product collection available at their fingertips.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

britishwool.org.uk campaignforwool.org THE STOCKLISTS December 2015
Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 61

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
www.greendalecarpets.co.uk Contact: Rob Harding Tel: 01432 852000 Fax: 01432 852005 rharding@greendalecarpets.co.uk
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 64
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents
• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.interfloor.com
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!
Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
www.interfloor.com
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 66
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Tip Sheared
Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE
Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
