Do you have a sixth sense all around your home? That must be iSense.

Create your own Suspense in a nice warm bedroom

We certainly have a sixth sense at Associated

Weavers. We were one of the first manufacturers to predict the recent rise in demand for softer

carpets, which is why we created the iSense

collection. We never compromise when it comes to technological innovation either – and Suspense is the proof. A super-soft saxony

that’s been around long enough to prove its worth.

First impressions count with Serenity in the front room So you want to make a good impression on

visitors in the most frequently used room in

the home? Serenity is everything the name suggests to give visitors that endearing feeling

of tranquility that comes with a super-soft

carpet. A heavyweight 100% polyamide, it has

a range of 14 warm shades, all with a 2.10 tog rating for cosy winter days in.

Associated Weavers Sales: 01422 431100 Email: salesuk@awe.be

Comfortable loft living should come as no Surprise Why should the humble loft be denied a luxury

carpet? More and more people are opening up their roof areas as living spaces these days, so why not opt for the unique sparkly Surprise

collection to help make a potentially dingy room come alive? It’s a lighter and more economical saxony with a weight of 1520gm, but its Fusion Bac keeps all the warmth in.

Enjoy the feel-good factor of an Obsession in your bedroom At Associated Weavers we’re obsessed with

perfection in every room of the home. Our iSense yarn not only incorporates super-

softness and superior durability, but it’s also designed to spring back to its original pristine appearance when it’s been squashed under the

bed legs for months on end. And Obsession is one of the results of this unique achievement in carpet technology.

The wisdom of Discretion to enhance the dining room As the most cherished room for social occasions,

doesn’t the dining room deserve something

more special? Discretion is another style

manufactured with our unique 100%

polyamide ‘bounce back’ fibre, designed to always look fresh and new. The iSense range will appeal right around the house for its

superb softness and adaptability to any

conditions. It’s common sense to choose

iSense, so contact your area manager today on 01422 431100, and he’ll talk sense.

SERENITY

Kingsmead adds a soft heavyweight with Serenity Using the same fine, soft 2-ply polypropylene Everlon fibre as the original Amazing range, the new addition is a 10th gauge, deep pile carpet that is ideal for all areas of the home and has a 12 year stain and wear warranty. With a strong palette of clean easy colours, there are 14 plain shades to choose from including Grape and Sky in both 4m and 5m widths. Amazing has been a real success for us so it made sense to broaden the palette and give consumers even more colour and choice with this new heavy weight addition Serenity. @Kingsmeadcpts

Carpet&FlooringReview apollo Plus ready for relaunch

Cormar Carpets has relaunched its successful apollo Plus collection with more colours than ever before.

The easy clean, affordable range has expanded its colour bank from 15 to 20 shades and will include 11 brand new contemporary hues, such as Pensive Sky and Rainstorm, as well as the best-selling nine existing colours. Apollo Plus is made from 100% Excellon – an easy clean two-fold yarn – and is available in both four and five metre widths. Tufted on 1/10th gauge machinery for a finer, denser pile it now comes with a 10 year stain and wear warranty. Said marketing director David Cormack: “Since its launch in 2014, Apollo Plus has offered tremendous value with a choice of popular colours. Since then, there has been a marked change in demand towards more grey and neutral shades and as a result, we have included a wider choice of plains and heathers in the new palette.” In line with other members of Cormar’s easy clean family of products, Apollo Plus is a bleach cleanable and stain resistant carpet. It retails at around £17 per sq m and is an attractively priced, affordable carpet range designed for families setting up home or on a restricted budget. All Cormar’s easy clean polypropylene, loop pile and wool twist ranges are produced on site at its Lancashire mills and are distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet. NEWS

the gamble pays off – in las Vegas!

Brintons Carpets reports sales of nearly £100 million and profits more than doubled to £8.5m – a hugely positive result for a company that was fighting for its future when it was sold out of historic family ownership in 2011.

The company's latest accounts for the year to 30 September 2017 show that Brintons generated revenues of £94.3m, up from £91.5m in 2016, with pre-tax profits up from £3.6m to £8.5m. Last year, the Sunday Times ranked Brintons one of the U.K.'s fastest growing companies in terms of profits and much of the success has been built on its export sales, especially in the contract market. Sales into the hospitality sector, especially in the US, have been key in restoring the fortunes of Brintons and Las Vegas was singled out in the company's report as a particularly successful city for its products. This is a massive transformation for a company that famously started making carpets in 1783 and enjoyed royal patronage throughout an illustrious history. But Brintons came close to collapse in the new millennium and was bought out of administration by equity capital group Carlyle in 2011. Many job losses in Brintons home town of Kidderminster were to follow but the new owners were also to secure new investment which has driven the business forward. Last summer, New Yorkbased equity investors Argand Partners working with the management team at Brintons bought the business from Carlyle. In a company statement this January, chief executive Duccio Baldi described the figures as a "strong set of results". He continued: "Once again, the transition to our well established overseas operations has been key to the success. Hospitality markets across the globe delivered good growth, especially in the US territory. In Europe we had notable achievements, winning contracts in the new-build marine sector." In the UK, Brintons has continued to develop its luxurious collection of vintage styles and contemporary designs for the retail market and its impressive QuickWeave system that delivers a more personalised contract solution to reconfigure hundreds of designs in multiple colours with a turnaround of just six weeks. The company also flagged its increasing interest in rugs having acquired a Polish rugs business which it intends to use as the basis of a wider approach to this market.

lano’s popular palette

the hugely popular Fairfield Creations collection by lano, has been updated with a new, refined colour palette to keep the range up-to-date with the latest looks in the home. As part of the Essenz collection of high-value polypropylene styles, Fairfield Creations has long been a favourite of homeowners looking for a carpet that’s stylish and easy to live with, its coordinated stripe is perfect for adding a feature element in halls, stairs and landings. Now with a palette that includes five brand-new heather colourways and two hot coordinating stripes, Fairfield Creations is ready to take on the latest interior looks. With 12 heather tones and two stripe styles, the collection reflects a maturing market for combination ranges. “We’ve updated Fairfield Creations to bring it in-line with customer demand, refining the colours available so that they deliver the right blend of enduring neutrals and fashionable greys,” explains Birger Karlsson, sales director UK. “This more structured palette has allowed us to reduce the number of stripes featuring in Fairfield Creations, reflecting a more sophisticated and mature approach to feature carpet.” The heather colourways of Fairfield Creations are available in both four and five-metre widths, while stripes are four-metre wide only. Pattern repeat is 25cm and ideal for use on stairs, retaining the style’s easy install nature. A 1/10th gauge quality gives the fineness of yarn required for a pinstripe, while thanks to a hardy 35oz pile quality, this collection comes with a 10-year stain warranty. Bleach cleanable and with this brand-new look, Fairfield Creations upholds its popularity as a thoughtful and sophisticated approach to coordinating carpet that’s excellent value too. academy backs the best

after an intensive three-day course, Kris Keegan, founder of Scotland-based Doors & Floors, is accredited as a Quick-Step master Installer, benefitting his customers with a lifetime workmanship warranty on all Quick-Step wood and laminate floor installations.

Kris Founded Doors & Floors with his wife, Maria, who now runs the recently opened showroom in Bathgate, West Lothian. The couple were keen to ensure that customers were provided with the very best in installation and so having heard of the Quick-Step Master Installer programme, Kris chose to book a place on the course. Kris Keegan, explains more: “I started installing floors of all kinds when I was 16-years old, before spending time as a joiner and then finding my way back to flooring once again. For the last four or five years, I’ve been focused solely on the installation of doors and wood and laminate flooring throughout the area, working for my own customers, as well as operating as sub-contractor for retailers and builders’ merchants across this region of Scotland. “With the opening of my new showroom I wanted to make sure that I was offering the best in workmanship and with the lack of an industry qualification that’s recognised by consumers, signing up to the Master Installer scheme seemed the obvious thing to do. Quick-Step is a well-known brand with a reputation for excellent quality, not just by those involved in flooring and joinery, but also by homeowners. The Master Installer qualification is a great way to qualify my installation work as upholding the brand’s position.” www.quick-step-academy.co.uk 26 February 2018

BUSINESS NEWS Becoming Balta

Europe's largest carpet manufacturer Balta has announced a strategic shift that will see the phasing out of the Crown floors brand which they introduced into the UK market six years ago.

In a letter to retailers, the company said: “This transition will see the powerful and recognised Balta brand gradually replace Crown Floors as we look to make more prominent our reputation for excellence in product development and service.” Balta added that they would retain a cut-length service for selected premium Balta carpet ranges, most of which share similar specifications and colourways to those in the Crown floors ranges. “Becoming Balta will help everyone through a more efficient and focused operation in all aspects of business,” says the company. The company invested heavily in the Crown Floors brand with distinctive marketing and point-of-sale and a dedicated UK sales team and the move was seen as a smart, innovative approach to the British market by one of the country’s major importers. While the initiative has been a success in establishing Balta products more extensively in the UK independent retail sector, it is an expensive option to support and the company is confident they can sustain its momentum under their own name. “The Crown Floors brand has helped us to establish Balta in a significant and important market and it is our firm belief that continued innovation and excellent customer service will build on the solid foundation,” says Balta. For the time being, all the Crown Floors ranges are unchanged and retailers can reach their usual contacts for sales and invoicing, etc. T 0800 077 33 01 www.crownfloors.co.uk

Brexit limits growth in UK wood

Robust 2017 results

Retail sales figures report a rocky December on the High Street but furniture trades appeared to have performed reasonably well amid the winter gloom.

The Headlam Group said trading improved in November and December which led to an overall positive result for the year, with revenue up 2.1% – with like-for-like revenue growth in the UK of 0.5% and Continental Europe 4.2% up. The Group expects pre-tax profits of £42.5m, up 6% on last year.*

Brintons also reported that 2017 profits more than doubled on the previous year to £8.5m - see page 24.

British Retail Consortium data released in mid-January showed total High Street revenue up a tiny 0.6% with furnishing sales falling to tenth position in the BRC league table as shoppers focussed on turkeys and trinkets. But the BDO High Street Sales Tracker revealed that homewares (including carpets) was a star performer within the non-food results with like-for-like sales up 2.5% as shoppers demonstrated what analysts called the “nesting instinct”.

In fact, according to BDO, homeware sales have shown positive growth in nine of the 12 months of 2017. Other reports in the sector also show some cause for optimism. The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) says that demand for furnishings has increased with five years of successive incremental growth. The Association’s Dr Peter Beele commented: “The full retail picture for 2017 has yet to emerge, but preliminary signs are good, despite some press speculation to the contrary. We saw sales continuing to rise in 2017 with first and second quarter consumer expenditures being between 5-6% higher than for the equivalent periods in 2016.” Reports of the death of the High Street are also premature according to a study by GlobalData. In their latest UK Town Centres 2017–2022 Report, they note that while the UK town centre has been in decline since 2015, it sales are forecast to rise in 2018 (albeit by only 0.2%) and growth will continue until 2022.

* Headlam Group has also confirmed the appointment of Philip Lawrence as its new chairman from 1 June 2018, taking over from the UK wood floorcoverings market has a high level of import Dick Peters who has served 12 years on the Board. penetration, and is therefore highly susceptible to fluctuations in exchange rates. as such, it was impacted by the downward movement of Sterling following the 2016 Referendum. Prior to this, the market had been showing good growth, increasing by 6% between 2013 and 2015. While signs at the start of 2016 were positive, the climate of uncertainty surrounding the Brexit issue and the competition from lVt meant that growth for 2016 slowed to 1%. Estimates for 2017 show value growth of around 1-2%.

Wood floorcoverings are now marginally the second largest floorcoverings sector in the UK, currently accounting for an estimated 16% of the market in value terms, a share which has fallen only slightly since it peaked at 17-18% in the 2004-07 period. The main competition has been the vinyl sector with increasing popularity of LVT in both domestic and contract providing significant competition for some wood floorcoverings products. Domestic DIY installations of wood flooring are still below pre-recession levels and seem unlikely to improve in the short to medium term, as major DIY multiples carry out significant restructuring programmes in the face of consumer reluctance to carry out their own home improvement tasks. At the same time, the contract sector is now suffering from the uncertainty in business confidence, particularly in the commercial office and retail sectors. Laminate, the largest product category in this sector, continues to be a strong driver of growth in the overall wood floorcoverings market and it has become an increasingly popular choice in the commercial/contract sector. Value added products with useful additional features, such as non-slip and water-resistant or waterproof flooring, have also helped stimulate demand. Sales of laminate are likely to continue to grow by an additional 2% in 2017. The solid and engineered woods sector has been slightly more volatile than laminate, and has seen slowing growth of 1% in 2016 with similar growth estimated for 2017, while the market for accessories, such as underlay, edging strips, glues, jointing strips, is not forecast to grow significantly in 2017. The rationalisation of production facilities away from the UK to lower cost countries by larger global players has been a critical factor in the increasing role of imports to the UK market. The percentage share of imports from the EU has risen significantly, from 45% in 2011 to 56% in 2016, while imports from Asia have fallen from 51% to 41% in that period. Marketing insights Super soft carpets the influence of the Hygge trend (the Scandinavian word for a mood of cosiness and comfort with feelings of wellness and contentment) has been big in interiors over the last few years. So, what’s next and how does that affect carpets? Well, lagom (described as being just enough, translates to having a sustainable way of life), is predicted to be the next big influence in home interiors. Promoting softness underfoot has been a key marketing message in carpets, particularly for synthetic manufacturers as innovations in yarn has meant consumers can enjoy super soft carpets which are also easy to clean. But wool, with all its sustainable credentials also has much to promote. Ultimately, comfort and sustainability could be the winning formula.

David Cormack, Marketing Director at Cormar Carpets explains the rise in synthetics, “The genre of super soft deep pile carpets has grown the popularity of synthetics and is now a ‘brand category’ within the carpet sector.

“The progress made in fibre extrusion over the last decade, has meant that soft polypropylene carpets have become increasingly popular as a consequence. The use of finer filament fibres in multi-filament yarns creates a carpet with a softer handle that has great appeal. This is illustrated in our popular Sensation range, the original and still market leading soft handle carpet.”

Kingsmead Carpets - Serenity, azure Kingsmead believe the current trend for ‘soft feel’ carpets has brought a new dimension to interior décor. “Serenity within Kingsmeads Clean Easy portfolio offers superior comfort underfoot and outstanding practicality and durability, this carpet really makes a house a home. Cormar Carpets - Soft Focus Heathers, nocturne

“The genre of super soft deep pile carpets has grown the popularity of synthetics and is now a ‘brand category’ within the carpet sector.”

“With global uncertainty, consumers adopt a more inward-looking approach to their interior style and want their homes to create a feeling of security and a great way to do this is with luxurious finishes that cosset,” comments Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta’s Marketing Director.

The newly introduced velvety smooth Barefoot Taj is a patterned carpet full of Eastern promise and on trend Barefoot Marble gives a contemporary but practical look. The popular Hatha and Bikram have recently been updated with new shades of grey. One of the finest wilton products on the market, UlsterVelvet has been in production for over 30 years and is luxurious flooring at its finest. The look and feel as its name suggests, is one of a smooth, soft, velvet like texture underfoot.

lano - Cashmere luxe

“We’ve seen a return to plush fabrics like velvet for sofas and the layering of soft fabrics and faux furs, so it’s only natural that homeowners are looking for the same feel from their choice of carpet. With its softness and silken look, Made in Heaven is ideal, giving a really luxurious take on modern carpet for the home.” Made in Heaven is available in a choice of weights using two-ply 100% polyester yarn for durability, it’s bleach cleanable and comes in four and five-metre widths.

Suitable for living areas, bedrooms, stairs and hallways Ulster Velvet not only looks and feels beautifully soft, it is also incredibly durable. Comprising of 80% wool and 20% nylon, the result is a luxurious yet hardwearing floor covering with the warmth and softness you would expect from a wool rich carpet that will continue to look its best for many years to come. In response to an unabated consumer demand for plain carpets and with neutral colourways leading the trend, Ulster Carpets has continued to evolve the palette in this longstanding range with the addition of contemporary grey and neutral tones all of which are effortlessly cool and create a relaxed sophistication in any space.

Lano is bridging the gap between stain-resistant performance and the look of luxurious nylon velvets with Halcyon, a new fibre now featuring in two brand new styles Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe. Developed for the dense and plush piles of velvet carpets, Halcyon is a solution-dyed yarn that has been engineered to give softness and a silk look. Featuring on a back-to-back display unit, Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe come in a palette dominated by modern tones; sophisticated greys and off-whites giving an elegant and contemporary feel to the range. “The look of nylon is really in vogue, but it’s lack of stain-resistance and a premium price-point can be off-putting for some homeowners,” says Gary Alp, UK Sales Manager at Lano. “We have rectified this with the launch of Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe, each offering a velvet look and feel with the benefit of stain-resistance and an obtainable price-point.”

Available in 4m and 5m widths and with Lano’s newly developed ‘smart’ backing that combines the benefits of action and felt-backed carpets, Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe come with 10-year stain and wear warranties. alternative Flooring - Barefoot taj Sharing the same palette allows homeowners to choose the perfect velvet for their needs and budget.

DOMOTEX Hannover 2018 Review •

Tangible turnaround for flooring Domotex demonstrates a drive towards improving value Domotex delivered on creativity and innovation as 45,000 visitors to Hannover saw how a record number of 1,615 exhibitors were responding to what one commentator called a “tangible turnaround” in the European floorcovering industry. “Significant growth in the number of participating exhibitors and the amount of booked space, a strong visitor turnout, an abundance of new products and innovations as well as an upbeat mood throughout the exhibition halls all bear witness to the great success of this year’s event,” commented Dr. Andreas Gruchow of Domotex. The mood was positive rather than optimistic as manufacturers rise to the challenge of a market that still has plenty of appetite but is demanding more for its money. Better quality products are being delivered with the intention that prices can be driven higher provided consumers see the extra value.

Domotex attracted 45,000 visitors from 100 countries

The Unique Youniverse was the show’s innovative theme

Would this mirrored box of wall sampling suit your store?!

These trends are healthy for a flooring industry that has been too ready to “race to the bottom” in terms of quality in the chase for a sale at any price. It is encouraging how many companies are investing in new capacity, new technology and in-house design resources to up their game in this environment. The UK was waving the flag in some style thanks to a highly professional presentation under the banner “Britain is Great” which was coordinated by the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce in association with the Government's Department for International Trade. This substantial exhibition area hosted leading UK companies such as Cormar Carpets, Cavalier Carpets, Brockway, British Wool and F.Ball. Even in this European setting, Brexit was barely mentioned with the prevailing view that since nobody really had any idea how the final outcome would affect flooring (and that everyone is tired of talking about it), the best plan was to keep calm and carry on improving the product.

A blue blizzard of carpet samples

In many cases, those improvements are seen in technical developments – improved fibres in textile flooring, enhanced performance in LVT and laminates and increased customisation with advanced digital printing and tufting technologies creating new opportunities to tailor products precisely to the needs of different consumer groups. We'll be reporting on more of these trends in our next issue…

“We are getting a great reaction to this product range...” Gavin Pugh, Sales Director, Associated Weavers. pictured far left with Simon Lewyckyj, Commercial Director, Associated Weavers.

Hannover happiness Associated Weavers

associated Weavers latest campaign to build on the popularity of its Vivendi collection uses the message “stressfree carpet for happy people” – they could equally say “… for happy retailers”, such is the success of this range since its launch a year ago. The original two ranges – Soul and Vibes – will be joined by three exciting new selections: Vigour, a saxony in 16 colours, and Verve and Ardour, essentially a heathered choice in two weights and 14 colours. All the options are available in multiwidth, 2.5m up to 5m, and with FusionBac backing, so Vivendi is fitter friendly too.

Verve and Ardour are two new additions to the successful Vivendi collection

“We are getting a great reaction to this product range,” said Sales Director Gavin Pugh. “These are luxury carpets which go anywhere throughout the home and are totally reliable. And we have also received a strong reaction to the colours many saying that the carpet is like a ‘bright wool’ – an appearance with that bit extra for the modern consumer,” he said. At the heart of Vivendi is AW’s iVivo fibre – a solution-dyed nylon offering excellent performance alongside the ability of nylon to offer the stronger, more definite colours which consumers appreciate. Associated Weavers has invested in an extensive new package of marketing for Vivendi in 2018 to ensure its success is sustained. The company is one of the most trusted innovators in product development, with the competition looking towards AW at Domotex to see what's new in the core brands: Invictus, iSense, Vivendi and StainAway. Invictus is the flagship polypropylene collection with ranges like Orion and Sirius, now in their third year, generating substantial volumes of business for retailers – now further enhanced with additional colours in the grey area. The substantial, tenth-gauge Magnificus has also been selling strongly.

Aquarius Collection – The new polyester ranges in the Invictus brand

The Invictus brand will now be extended with the addition of two polyester ranges under the Aquarius collection – offering something a little different with two weights of saxonies which combine the bright, soft feel of polyester with its extra performance and bleach cleanability. The range Dorado is the heaviest at 56 oz, then there is Indus at 41 oz – both available in 14 colours. Super soft iSense is not forgotten in the 2018 product development programme with the addition of Ourania a stunning velvet carpet that oozes luxury from every fibre! DOMOTEX 2018 review Tile transformation Tapibel

tapibel is transforming the carpet tile business with innovation and design that is setting them apart in the sector and broadening the appeal to the residential and hospitality sector in additional to mainstream commercial flooring. “Our tile program goes from strength to strength,” says Mike Packwood “and we are increasingly a design-led company with the technology to be totally flexible.” The transformation is led by the advanced Myriad tufting machine the company installed in 2016 which allows “individual tuft placement” an opportunity for infinite design possibilities.

Last year, Domotex saw the first impressive results of the new technology with distinctive commercial flooring options under the company’s Incati brand. But this year, the designers have been let loose on the full potential of the technology and a burst of colour and creativity has resulted that takes carpet tiles into exciting new markets. Design examples at the show included Vintage, a structured distressed design in subtle colours ideal for hospitality and residential use - with options in paisley and geometric designs. The Myriad machine not only deliver precise design potential, multi-level pile geometry means that the structure and texture of the carpet is infinitely variable and Tapibel has had huge success with its commercial Metal-X range and added more options for 2018. Some of the Urban design are right on target for urban living trends in UK cities. Tapibel launched seven new Myriad ranges at Domotex and many of these are extending the tonal content from the two or three colours in the 2017 ranges to the four and five colours in the latest options. Broadloom has not been forgotten at Tapibel, with two attractive new ranges launched in high performance piece-dyed nylon. Prelude is a Wilton-look super plain carpet with very solid colours and a fine, smooth finish - a really sophisticated looking carpet. This range is joined by Silk Pearl - a deeper, double-sheared soft touch saxony coloured to compliment the most modern designer living space.

Big and beautiful Beaulieu International Group the Beaulieu International Group (B.I.G.) is big and beautiful and brimming with ideas and innovation if for some reason you could only ever visit one stand across the vast entirety of Domotex it should be this one! It is big! – Beaulieu International Group is the only company that can claim to do about every type of flooring, no matter how niche. Our of their entire new collections, 120 innovative products were carefully selected to be presented on the floor and in the Gallery. But it is beautiful too – really beautiful – as B.I.G. is a leading trendsetter in the sector and invests hugely in scanning fashion and interior developments around the world to incorporate into their flooring offer. The most dramatic example of this approach at Domotex was their cushion vinyl WOW concept. WOW stands for World Of Wonders and this is no hyperbole as the potential of the very latest digital printing technology at B.I.G. means that a remarkable range of decors and designs are achievable. In the remarkable Gallery on their stand, the B.I.G. designers demonstrated the endless possibilities of all their technology. Notable examples included a highly realistic sandy beach floor in their bathroom installation as well as a leather print that was textured to increase its authenticity and fine examples of on-trend marble and concrete designs, as well, of course, an impressive range of wood finishes. The company also launched two unique new vinyl plank and tile collections at Domotex – adding the Elite and Spirit collections to the already very successful PURE product line. Both these collections are offered in a wide range of wood and tile designs and are available in glue-down or click versions. Their completely re-designed and re-engineered high-end laminate collection with up to 100 new designs is not just an evolution of the company, but a revolution for the industry. Among many innovations in their tufted carpet division, Beaulieu added impressively to their Carus creative carpet ranges with two new collections: XL Impact, a structured loop, and XL Impressions, a level cut loop with many original designs well worth a look. The Ideal residential ranges that are familiar to the UK market have been further enhanced with new design and colour options and 1/4 quality, Cashmere, has been added to the Velluto collection after a highly successful preview at Harrogate last year. Aiming higher Balta Carpets

Balta has been incredibly busy bringing interesting new offers to market for 2018 as befits Europe's largest carpet manufacturer and the quality of the latest introductions indicates a trend towards higher value that is significant in the current economic environment. “Overall we are upgrading across all our collections to create higher value products,” said Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta’s marketing director. “We are keen to help retailers promote better products which command better prices in the market and are, in any event, more reliable with higher performance. This is good for retailers and it is good for consumers also.”

“Overall we are upgrading across all our collections to create higher value products” Geert Vanden Bossche, Marketing Director, Balta Group.

Noble is becoming a significant brand for Balta Carpets and saw the introduction of five new ranges including colour updates to match the latest market trends. New entrants included the substantial, soft Ultimate Nobel and two new twists – Artemis Twist, a two-tone heather range which also includes two fashionably narrow co-ordinated stripes, and Super Noble at a heavier weight. Made in Heaven

Showcased on the Balta stand was the launch of the Made in Heaven collection, first revealed before its launch at Harrogate last year to great acclaim. Made in Heaven uses Balta’s latest PES yarn which has a 20-year stain warranty and 15-year wear warranty and it is also easier to recycle. Rolling out in February, this solution-dyed two-ply polyester collection has the advantages of softness and enhanced performance while retaining its bleach cleanability. There will be three ranges to start with – Aurora and Angelic, two weights in 4 and 5m and the same colour bank of 12 which will be offered with a cut length service, and then Gracious, the entry-level option on a 4m roll in 12 colours. A dramatic new introduction by the Balta group under ITC was Wild Luxury, a nylon collection “styled by nature” and supported by stunning wild bear imagery - the reason for which becomes apparent when you see the collection’s shag pile “Bold Indulgence” which actually does have a remarkable similarity to a bear skin!

LCT – a class of its own Balta has defined a new flooring class of its own in the launch of LCT – Luxury Carpet Tiles – which responds to the trend for modular flooring and is particularly appropriate for urban living where managing broadloom carpet in apartment buildings can create a challenge. With 15 ranges already, LCT has been launched with great confidence and covers a huge range of styles in 10 polypropylene options and five in nylon – including chromojet printed designs. “The modular approach is fashionable, attractive, and especially practical and we can offer an unrivalled portfolio of products to respond to this growing trend,” said Geert Vanden Bossche.

The three other ranges in this collection are a velvet with a silky feel called Savage Abundance, a soft twist called Natural Embrace, and a loop pile called Earthy Privilege.

High-end Odyssey

Another impressive initiative under the ITC brand was the launch of the high-end Odyssey Collection using heat-set, two-ply solutiondyed polyamide yarn for the enduring softness with bleach cleanability that has become so popular in today’s carpet market. Odyssey’s Palermo has a fashionable velvet appearance in 10 colours and is joined by Portofino with a heavier weight and 16 colours. Balta’s sophisticated Satino collection in silky, glossy polyamide has added a new range – Satino Glamour has a heathered effect and more colours, in response to customer demand to extend the appeal of this popular luxury range. Balterio launched a brand new range of high performance products at Domotex last year led by the class-leading range of waterproof laminates called Grande which combined high resolution digitally-printed authenticity with new levels of performance. Flying the flag Great Britain Britain was flying the flag at the world’s largest flooring event thanks to an initiative by the tradeshow team at the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce (BCC). BCC has set up a special unit which is sponsored by the UK Government’s Department for International Trade to provide help to UK companies promote exports by exhibiting and visiting international exhibitions. The beautifully designed showcase centre set up by BCC provided a reception area surrounded by tradeshow booths for UK companies such as Cormar Carpets, Cavalier Carpets, Brockway, F.Ball and others. British Wool also had a stand in the centre. Much of the striking photography which was used across the centre came courtesy of Brockway Carpets whose red, white and blue striped Carnaby range (pictured left) was ideal to set the scene for the “Britain is Great” campaign being driven by the Department for International Trade.

New to the fleet are eight CF75s with a specialist drawbar chassis to cover the ‘trunking’ of trailers with loaded boxes. The other two are LF55s with the ability to run with demountable bodies. In addition, driver cabins have been kitted out with the latest technology such as lane departure warnings and assisted braking. “Such an intensive distribution operation needs high levels of vehicle availability, reliability and service back-up,” said Gary Mitchell, Cormar’s distribution manager. “With over 3,000 carpet deliveries each week, we pride ourselves on our nationwide delivery fleet as it is an important offering to our independent carpet retailers and local carpet shops, differentiating us from many of our competitors.” It was over five decades ago that Cormar decided to make door-to-door delivery to independent retailers, part of its service. Now from its base in Bury, Lancashire, it delivers right across the UK direct from site and through 27 strategically located collection centres to offer an average 48 hour nationwide turnaround service to customers. Investing in architects

market-leading subfloor preparation products and flooring adhesives manufactured by F. Ball and Co. ltd. are now available as Building Information modelling (BIm) objects to download for free from RIBa’s nBS national BIm library.

RIBA members can download the objects, in Revit compatible and IFC formats, in order to specify F. Ball products when designing structures using BIM software. The wide range of products listed features some of the most popular high-performance levelling compounds and flooring adhesives for installing floorcoverings. These include F. Ball’s Stopgap Fast-Track 30 rapid-drying levelling compound and Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. Also listed are waterproof surface membranes, which are often required for new-builds because of high levels of construction moisture. F. Ball’s marketing manager, Richard Harris, said: “We are proud that F. Ball is one of the first manufacturers of subfloor preparation products to be included within the NBS BIM Library. We have made a significant investment so that architecture, engineering and construction professionals can now download BIM compatible data to incorporate our products into their models. This makes it easy to specify exactly which products they want flooring contractors to use for optimum results.” T 01538 361633 46 February 2018

Condor’s clean innovation

leading manufacturer Condor has announced their introduction of polyester carpets using the niaga® technology that ensures that their products are as “clean” as possible with excellent hypoallergenic benefits and full recyclability.

The credentials of these carpets are impressive as they contain only one high quality material; polyester. All other materials, responsible for VOCs, high costs in recycling, and difficult cleaning, are designed out.. The approach was introduced by Mohawk in the US last year to great acclaim and Condor are delighted to be the first to debut the technology in Europe. “This innovation is an important step forward for the industry,” says operational manager Jan Hoekman Jr. “We are working on increasing sustainability throughout Condor and this technology will be introduced across all our polyester ranges alongside other initiatives such as energy-neutral manufacturing.” Latex is avoided by tufting the carpet onto a special primary polyester backing and the pile is then fused into the backing using a heat process. In addition to the environmental benefits, this softer backing means that the carpet is easier to install – lighter in weight, easier to cut, more flexible on stairs and easier on the hands and customer’s furniture. The backing pad can also be increased in depth meaning that Condor could manufacture ranges which do not require a separate underlay. The new machinery to manufacture this type of carpet is part of a substantial investment to which Condor has committed at its factory in The Netherlands and production is expected to start by the end of this year. another crushing success

Based in Rochford and Colchester Essex, Bailey and taylor are one of the latest flooring companies to install a Kenburn Carpet Crusher in order to recycle their new and uplifted carpet and underlay waste.

Bailey and Taylor’s MD Stewart Taylor comments, “as we’ve been established for more than fifty years we’ve grown to be one of the UK’s leading flooring companies and due to the volumes of square metres of flooring we supply each week it’s inevitable we’ll generate huge volumes of carpet and underlay waste’’. “As part of our existing environmental policy and our commitment to on-going improvements within our operations division we wanted to ensure that none of our waste ended up in landfill’’. “By purchasing a Kenburn Carpet Crusher we’re now recycling all our carpet and underlay waste which not only costs us less than sending it to landfill it’s also had an enthusiastic response from our customers who’ve been delighted to hear their waste is recycled. Simon Wells from Kenburn adds, “We can visit your premises and conduct a brief no obligation waste survey to determine how much money you’ll save by recycling your waste. T 01727 844988

Feature

Voice of the trade Wendy Adams Ex-organiser of the National Flooring Show, Harrogate* What was it that revitalised the nFS during your involvement? First of all I have to say I was very lucky – I worked with David Wildman for a couple of years to secure the future of the show in Harrogate – we won that battle and when David left me at the helm I felt I had to show I could make some big improvements and prove that although I knew nothing about the flooring industry I did know how to put on a good show! I invested a lot into the show, with a new look, new features, and some key experts to help with trends and business seminars. We had to make it a show the industry would be proud of and get all the key manufacturing brands back on board. Having a passionate and dedicated team working for me helped enormously, and I can’t thank them enough. What was the new feature of the nFS you were most pleased with? although I think the new features made a statement, the biggest thing that gets buyers to any show is having the right exhibitors, so a lot of our work was encouraging key brands to return and help us make it work for the whole industry. I was very pleased however with our first ever trends Hub which looked amazing, and our pool café/bar (complete with swimming pool) only made possible with the installation of fantastic flooring from Interface. Did you ever sleep the week before the show opened? not much as I was always doing another event which closed only the day before building up the Flooring Show – and that involved quite a few late nights with plenty of alcohol!

What would you say to a retailer who has never visited the event? You are seriously missing out – its where you can meet your suppliers face to face, discuss any issues before they get out of hand, see amazing new products and place orders before your competitors, build relationships with suppliers and with other retailers, swapping ideas or just sounding out about industry issues. See and learn about new up and coming trends, and hopefully learning from our many seminars and free business advice experts.Harrogate is also a beautiful town to be in.

How do you think the nFS will evolve going forward? I think the Show will continue to grow strength-to-strength. With the solid platform we have built over the years, it leaves for endless opportunity to increase the shows size and reputation further within the market. We will begin to see an advancement towards digital & online, whilst still understanding the values and importance of the traditional styles of business that this industry relies on. In this day and age, it’s important to make sure that all areas are covered in our campaign to guarantee great results for our exhibitors. What extra advantages do Ocean media Group bring to the event? the team at OmG have lots of experience in running large, successful exhibitions and acquiring new shows whilst continuing to grow them. they have larger resources and the ability to invest into the show further. One instant advantage is the dedicated in-house marketing team who will be pushing harder than ever to connect our retailers with our manufacturers and suppliers.

Why do you think exhibitions still work in the digital era? In this digital world it is still great to have personal contact with customers and this is just one of the many benefits a B2B exhibition can deliver. the flooring industry has always been based on personal relationships, and there is no better way to create new relationships, and develop existing ones than by being face to face with your clients. at an exhibition, the client has the opportunity to touch and feel new products, discuss any concerns or new incentives with the manufacturers and just generally build relationships making stronger bonds – something they cannot achieve by simply looking at a new catalogue or making an order over the internet.

What do exhibitors need to focus on to be more successful at shows? With any exhibition, not just in this industry, it’s key to remember the three Points of Engagement - that being pre-show, during the show, and post-show. Planning a marketing campaign and communicating their attendance 1-2 months prior is vital, along with having a brilliant stand design, that’s engaging whilst also displaying their products. this, combined with a thorough follow-up of leads when back in the office would usually make for a good end result.

Is Harrogate the right place for a national show? I have to admit Harrogate is a bit too far north and not the easiest of places to get to, but once there you can really see why it works. as I have already mentioned there is no time spent driving to the venue each day, parking charges, taxis expenses as everything is on the doorstep of the Harrogate Convention Centre. the town has a growing reputation for being gastronomy and with new restaurants opening like the Ivy and Gino’s it beats other exhibition towns and cities hands down. the stand costs would also have to be increased if it was in somewhere like the nEC in Birmingham or Olympia in london! What’s your overall impression of the flooring industry as an “outsider”? I don’t mind saying I was pretty intimidated at first – lots of suits!! But I have always found the whole industry a delight to work with, very professional and always extremely grateful. I have to say compared to other industries I work in we found the flooring bunch an absolute delight to work with – they say it how it is, but in a nice way, and if there is a complaint they very calmly work with us to resolve it – never any jumping up and down and shouting!

Will you miss us as much as we’ll miss you?! Well you are not rid of me yet – I will be at the show this year, and definitely drinking wine on Sunday night at the party – nice that I won’t be paying for it this time! But yes, we have all enjoyed our time in flooring and won’t forget it.

* After five years as owner and organiser and successfully re-vitalising the show,Wendy sold the business last month to the Ocean Media Group, a leading event organiser.

“The flooring industry has always been based on personal relationships, and there is no better way to create new relationships, and develop existing ones than by being face to face with your clients.”

NEWS Supporting United

Flooring preparation products donated by F. Ball and Co. ltd. have been used to install high-quality floorcoverings in an upstairs function room in the newly-built clubhouse at CB Hounslow United Football Club, in middlesex. Contractors from Middlesex Flooring undertook the installation free-of-charge because of the football club’s support for local community initiatives. The contractors used a rotary sanding machine to remove laitance from the newly-installed anhydrite screed subfloor to prepare the surface ahead of the application of a levelling compound. It is essential to prime newly installed subfloors before the application of Stopgap 1100 Gypsum. F. Ball’s Stopgap P121 acrylic primer is specially formulated to promote adhesion between anhydrite screeds and calcium sulphate-based levelling compounds. F. Ball’s Stopgap 1100 Gypsum, which is designed especially for use over calcium sulphate screeds, was then applied to create a perfectly smooth surface ahead of the installation of the floorcoverings. Stopgap 1100 is self-levelling, so when mixed, the compound was poured onto the prepared substrate and allowed to flow and achieve a thickness of 3mm. The compound was ready to receive floorcoverings 24 hours later. Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier was then used to install high-quality, bitumen-backed Desso carpet tiles to create a border and lastly, woodeffect, Tarkett vinyl sheet was installed over the middle of the room using F. Ball’s Styccobond F46 solvent-free, pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. T 01583 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Easy wood work

Preparing a wooden floor for the application of a finish can be a long and tiring process. Osmo UK, the wood finishes expert, provides professionals with a quicker and easier option that changes the way in which wood is treated. To achieve an attractive, aesthetically pleasing wooden floor, it is important to ensure the flooring surface is prepared before the finish is applied. Traditionally, oil finishes require the surface to be sanded very finely to ensure the surface remains smooth. To achieve this result, extra sanding work is required. Osmo changes this process for professionals. When using Osmo’s eco-friendly wood finishes, the surface no longer requires fine sanding. Due to Osmo finishes being very viscid, and containing both oils and waxes, the wood absorbs the finish to provide a smooth surface, resulting in the extra level of sanding not being required. The guidelines for sanding a floor in preparation for an Osmo product is P100 – P150, depending on the wood. Generally, P120 provides the best results. Before sanding begins, the surface must be clean, dry and frostfree, with a maximum moisture content of 20% (be cautious with woods with high moisture such as green oak). Clean or slightly sand old microporous (oil-based) finishes or remove old varnishes and lacquers. Sand carefully before application starting with a coarse paper - final sanding grade for brush or roller application is between P120-150. To achieve the smooth flooring surface, the wood should be sanded in the direction of the grain. Moving the sandpaper continuously will prevent marks where the sanding machine has stopped. For edges that cannot be reached, the solution is using a special edge sander. The result is a smooth surface with a vivid optical character. T 01296 481220 www.osmouk.com

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. the degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 56

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 58

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

F L O O R I N G FAC T S H E E T WOOL FIBRE

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain. British wool is bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to a carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 Wool Rich – Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Benefits of Wool Carpet 1. Practical

4. Internal Environment

Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

2. Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency.

Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production.

3. Safety

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

5. Eco/Environmental

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. to make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. a heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. a wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas. Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 65
