BRITAIN’S No. 1 FLOORCOVERING MAGAZINE FOR THE RETAIL AND CONTRACT MARKET
HELLO 2020! We’re heading into 2020 on the back of a great year. We’ve reinvented our branding, bringing all our flooring brands under one roof. Our brand new website makes it easy for both retail and commercial clients to explore our products and services. We’ve launched exciting new ranges – Carefree Twist has already sold into at least 1,000 retailers across the UK, and our Serenity collection is a serious challenge to natural wool, offering moth-proof, stain-resistant fibres and our revolutionary Combi-bac® backing material. We’ve continued to meet the service commitments we’re so renowned for, and we’ve set ourselves ambitious targets to do even more to support you in the coming year. • Innovative single-stand display solution for your showroom
Why retailers love Furlong Flooring
• All the flooring you need from a single supplier: carpet, hardwood, laminate, vinyl and LVT • Improved customer service process that means you’re never kept waiting What are you waiting for? Make 2020 the year you experience the Furlong Flooring difference.

GREAT BRITISH INNOVATION
THE STOCKLISTS January 2020
Carpet&FlooringReview Funky feel from Altro Altro Ensemble modular luxury vinyl tiles have helped to create a chic, dynamic and modern space with a new approach to bingo within the new Opera Bingo Club in Barrow-in-Furness. Architects and designers, Bignell Shacklady Ewing, developed the new space and the company’s Interior Designer, Emily East, headed up the project. She said: “The brief was to create an energetic space with a contemporary, fresh approach to bingo that would attract customers of all ages. We felt the wood effect Altro Ensemble flooring system would enhance that contemporary feel the client wanted to achieve, and give it a chic and ‘funky’ feel. For example, we used the flooring to create an area of herringbone pattern that was unique to the bar area, using the tiles to enhance the bar overall design.” This area featured three shades of Altro Ensemble. “The colour options worked well in this format, complementing the other interior finishes,” said Emily. “The overall effect is a wonderfully rich and contrasting pattern that is beautiful to look at; adding a superb quality feel. It makes a fantastic first impression.” Altro Ensemble was also specified for the club’s book sales counter and various corridors, laid in straight planks. Award-winning Altro Ensemble is a modular flooring system that gives complete design freedom to create stunning floors for interior spaces. From colour blocking to geometric patterns, the possibilities are as endless as the imagination. The flooring has up to 15dB sound reduction with added comfort underfoot, making it perfect for front of house areas in hotels, including foyers and receptions, restaurant and café dining areas, retail, offices and student accommodation – any environment where design is key. With 39 colours and four modular sizes, you can mix and match to create unique patterns using colour and design. Daryl Davidson, Head of Operations & Finance for the Opera Bingo Club, says: “This is a very busy club, so we needed a surface that wasn’t just great looking, but hard wearing too. One that would stand the test of time. The Altro Ensemble is fitted in the club’s high traffic areas, and it will stay looking good for many years to come. It’s comfortable to walk on, too, very easy on the feet.” T 01462 489 516 www.altro.co.uk
Staying ahead Abingdon Flooring has seen continued success and momentum throughout 2019 and is geared up to sustain its success in 2020. May saw early colour updates and range developments to its StainFree and Wilton Royal brands displayed at the Buying Groups National Flooring Show along with the launch of ‘shop-in-shop’ wall stand bays, lecterns and large format wall graphics. Satin Touch offers a premium underfoot feel and its quality will be felt for years to come, bringing homes a luxurious and lasting ‘investment’ carpet from the StainFree collection. Consumers looking for high-spec finishes for their home would also want them to be easy to care for, so Satin Touch delivers on both fronts. With a future-ready palette and impressive feel, the new-look Satin Touch is well geared for capitalising on the popularity of bleach-cleanable carpet at a new, premium price position. In September, Abingdon Flooring exhibited at The Flooring Show where new ranges Sophisticat and Maximus were eagerly anticipated by trade visitors. Sophisticat comes in 16 new colourways all named to reflect its market-leading luxury pedigree. With shades from neutrals such as Champagne to the cool turquoise tones of Azure, there is a colour choice to match all on-trend interior palettes and styles. Using a new 100% Silk Tec PP yarn gives Sophisticat its lifetime StainFree guarantee and its 1/10th gauge Saxony construction marks it as a superior luxury carpet. Also premiered at the Flooring Show, the USA Collection brings a sense of cool, American metropolis to interiors. A luxury tufted carpet collection that comes in three sumptuous pile weights, the range reflects the aspirational lifestyles of our Atlantic cousins. The USA Collection provides retailers with a luxury range of StainFree carpets that give consumers the flexibility and sumptuous choice that suits their homes and budgets. “This year has seen our continued commitment to retailers in providing competitive ranges that reflect a growing consumer demand for quality carpets that work in a variety of homes,” explains Martin Peace, sales director, Abingdon Flooring. “Our expertise at combining technology and practical elements has seen success for StainFree ranges, and Sophisticat, Maximus, USA and Satin Touch are proof that StainFree can be offered as a luxury carpet offering.” “Looking towards 2020, Abingdon Flooring will be maintaining our lead in providing a competitive range and investing in understanding future trends while providing the capability to adapt, predict and create,” Martin Peace concludes. NEWS Industrial chic F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s Stopgap 800 wearcoat has been used to create a visually striking floor finish to complement the urban aesthetic of a new organic meat restaurant in South London. Contractors from the Polished Concrete Co., based in Croydon, applied the wearcoat to create a hardwearing, natural-looking floor finish as part of the refurbishment of ‘28 Well Hung’ in Nunhead. Prior to the installation of Stopgap 800, contractors lifted the old wood floorcoverings from the 70m2 subfloor of the restaurant and ensured it was suitably sound, smooth and dry before proceeding with the usual subfloor preparation process. To guard against excess subfloor moisture potentially damaging the finished installation, contractors applied Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane to isolate any subfloor humidity. The single coat solution fully cures in as little as three hours to create a barrier against residual construction moisture or rising damp where relative humidity values (RH) are up to 98%. Contractors then applied the Stopgap 800 wearcoat over the entire subfloor, at a thickness of 8mm. When the levelling compound had cured, contractors polished the surface before applying a sealer to protect it from water and other liquids and allow for easy maintenance by reducing adhesion of dirt or other debris. Stopgap 800 is a self-levelling, industrial-grade floor compound used for upgrading and renovating new and existing internal floors in light to heavy-duty applications where floorcoverings are not required to be installed. This makes it suitable for use in areas such as: storerooms, workshops and warehouses. Stopgap 800 is also protein-free, allowing it to be used in biologically sensitive areas. It can be applied over a wide range of subfloor types including sand/cement screed, concrete, granolithic, terrazzo, epoxy and polyurethane resins and Stopgap waterproof surface membranes. NEWS Water way to go As it strives to reduce its environmental impact, Balta Group has dramatically reduced the road kilometres of its raw materials supply chain, seeing a major reduction in CO2 emissions. Since 15 August 2019, about 75% of the 2,000 in-bound containers holding yarn from the Middle East have been diverted from the road to river, reducing a roundtrip of 208km to just 6km. On a yearly basis, this will see Balta reduce the road kilometres of raw materials by 97% from 312,000km to just 9,000km. The move towards water will also see a 72% reduction in CO2 emissions, with an annual drop of 257tonnes. Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Group says: “Making the transition towards water transport brings little in financial gain. The main reason for transporting raw materials by water is an environmental one with the reduction in CO2 too significant not to act upon. Also, it has the potential to make us more efficient by avoiding road delays in traffic hotspots, particularly with the expected impact of the roadworks planned for the Oosterweel project.” Containers arrive at the local RTW (Container Terminal Wielsbeke) with Balta commissioning Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) to transport the raw materials to production sites in Sint-Baafs-Vijve and the weaving mill in Waregem. With a daily connection from Antwerp and barges taking two days to reach Container Terminal Wielsbeke, the service is reliable and efficient. RTW has recently improved facilities at Container Terminal Wielsbeke and is set to invest in a third unloading space. Balta worked with Multimodaal Vlaanderen, a department of the VIL vzw (Flemish Institute for Logistics), helping Balta with the transition project. The manufacturer will evaluate the new logistic flow and will look for more opportunities to move towards water-based transport for raw materials and goods. As part of Balta’s commitment to the environment, this step demonstrates that the group is dedicated to finding ways of reducing the impact of every aspect of its operation from the raw material supply chain to manufacturing and product life cycle. NEWS RAG ready for 2020 The latest edition of F. Ball’s industry-acclaimed recommended adhesives guide (RAG) is now available and includes more adhesive recommendations than ever before. The guide lists the compatibility of the company’s adhesives and contains over 6,000 recommendations for branded floorcoverings from over 200 leading international manufacturers. Recommendations are included in the guide only after the completion of a rigorous 54-day testing programme at F. Ball’s state-of-the-art testing facilities and subject to endorsement by the relevant floorcovering manufacturer. This makes the F. Ball RAG the most trusted and comprehensive guide to floorcovering-adhesive compatibility available. So confident is F. Ball in the recommendations featured in the RAG that it guarantees the resulting bond performance for the entire lifetime of the flooring installation, as long as the advised subfloor preparation and installation procedures are followed. F. Ball’s sales director, Darren Kenyon, said: “Maximum compatibility between an adhesive and a floorcovering is imperative to ensure an excellent bond is achieved and avoid the requirement for costly remedial work or even total floor failure. Therefore, it is always recommended that contractors check the compatibility of adhesives with particular floorcoverings, and F. Ball’s RAG provides a convenient and reliable way of doing this, providing peace of mind that is supported by our guarantee.” A constantly updated version of the RAG is available on the F. Ball website and as a mobile app, which is free to download from the Apple App store or Google Play, allowing contractors to consult the trusted guide for advice on floorcovering-adhesive compatibility via the smartphone in their pocket at any time. Academy excels After seeing record numbers through its doors, The Academy for Excellence in Flooring has declared 2019 as its most successful year ever. Welcoming more than 450 industry professionals through its doors in 2019, the Academy for Excellence in Flooring has helped to improve practical skills and knowledge within the industry. Working with professional installers, retail store managers and builders merchant staff, the centre has improved confidence and technical insight. “Our brand value is to be the most recommended flooring retailer and to enable us to do this, we must ensure our teams are confident in the products we sell. With this in mind, the training programme proved excellent with teams enjoying the day and their feedback being that everyone should take part. Attendees left with more confidence and our surveyors were particularly pleased to have gained valuable technical insight.” Commented Louise Sylvester, regional manager, Carpetright, on the company’s work with the Academy. Carpetright has trained 500 staff through the centre. Alongside the work with retailers on specialist training programmes, the Academy for Excellence in Flooring has also seen a record number of installers learning new skills in Master Installer and Level One courses in its recently refurbished training centre. More than 450 professionals used the Academy in 2019, an 18% uplift over the previous year that demonstrates the positive impact being training can have on business. Steve Whitburn, an installer with more than 30 years’ experience is a perfect example of this: “The wood and laminate Quick-Step Master Installer programme proved so successful in establishing the business in my new locality that I returned to the Academy six months later to complete the LVT Master Installer course. To be honest, I was quite surprised by all the technical and background information. We were shown a range of core practical skills, such as how to fit stairs properly, but it was the tweaks, tips and tricks to make things easier and quicker that have made a real difference.” “The recognition of the Quick-Step brand among consumers, combined with the lifetime guarantee, gives you an edge on closing work. It’s certainly helped to establish me in the area. I also get a regular flow of enquiries from the Quick-Step website, where I’m listed as Master Installer operating in the Torquay area. Support from the Academy has also been flawless, with the social media platforms connected to the Academy really helpful when you’re on-site and in a bit of a pickle!” The Master Installer programme now has 551 wood, laminate and LVT professionals across the country. And with the highest number of bookings ever taken during its Black Friday event, 2020 is looking set to be another record-breaking year for the Academy. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

BUSINESS NEWS Ballot boost for flooring business? The flooring trade is holding out hope for a post-election sales bounce now that some of the uncertainty is over. In our end-of-year survey, 82% of readers blamed Brexit for the lack of consumer confidence but 52% believed that sales would be boosted by a conclusion to the political debates. Vince Holden, MD of Hugh Mackay and Thomas Witter, commented: ‘Whatever your political persuasion, I don’t think that there can be any doubt that Brexit and the political uncertainty that went with it damaged consumer confidence. “But In both the domestic and contract sectors, I do believe there will be a pent-up demand that will see business in 2020 become more buoyant. We hope that this increase in confidence will also result in end users trading up as there is no future for retailers and suppliers alike selling cheaper inferior products,” said Vince.
“I do believe there will be a pent up demand that will see business in 2020 become more buoyant” Martin Peace at Abingdon agrees: “The City’s reaction to the election outcome and the prospect of having Brexit behind us should leave us in a fantastic place going forward into 2020. Let’s hope so anyway – that’s certainly what we are planning for!” From Belgium, Balta marketing director Geert Vanden Bossche was confident. “Now the election has given the Government a majority, I believe we will soon go into some kind of agreement between the UK and Europe with a long transition period where it will be business as usual. The British island has not drifted away and the market is still very much there.”
“Manufacturers will need to be on top of their game to gain market share and customer service will be key for success in 2020” Gavin Pugh, MD of Associated Weavers reflected the view of many commentators who feel the market will continue to be cautious: “The market may be slow to start in 2020 as there is still a lot of uncertainty in regards to Brexit and the financial fall out post-Brexit, but this will mean manufacturers will need to be on top of their game to gain market share and customer service will be key for success in 2020.” The British Retail Consortium congratulated Boris Johnson on his success and CEO Helen Dickinson said:“We look forward to working with the new government on the many issues facing retailers. The Prime Minister must now fulfil his manifesto pledge and urgently begin a fundamental review into the broken business rate system to relieve the burden on retail businesses and create a system fit for the 21st century.” The BRC is also asking for changes to the Apprenticeship Levy to make it more flexible to build skills in the retail sector.

SDN and LVT tipped for 2020 Industry leaders have signalled key shifts in market trends that they believe will dominate the year ahead in interviews with The Stocklists. In carpets, polypropylene will retain its dominance but maybe slow in growth for super-soft while denser PP twists are promoted for use downstairs. The recent enthusiasm for polyester may start to wane. One commentator, Balta’s Geert Vanden Bossche, said; “Where I see a breakthrough in 2020 is in solution dyed nylon carpets that combine the benefits of nylon’s softness and resilience with bleach cleanability that gives easy maintenance. On top of that the light fastness is superior and the product is more sustainable.” In smooths, rigid LVT and SPC products are coming to the fore. AW’s Gavin Pugh added: We expect to see the continuing growth in the LVT market in general and big increases in consumer demand for rigid click products as well as the already popular parquet designs.”
Regulator challenge to top yarn spinner Lawton Yarns, who supply 80% of UK wool carpet yarn, may be re-sold after regulators challenged new owners Danspin on competition concerns. Danspin rescued troubled Lawton in the Summer, saving 300 jobs at the Dewsbury-based business which has sales of c. £47m. The business has remained profitable but was victim to wider problems of its Dutch parent Spin Group. The Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) said the acqusition was a “significant threat” to the supply market and “could increase prices or reduce the supply of yarn to carpet manufacturers in the U.K., potentially pushing prices up for people buying woollen carpet.” To avoid the CMA escalating its inquiry, Danspin has offered to sell the business and it is understood there are four offers being considered.
Other business news Flooring and furniture sales outperformed other home sectors at John Lewis in the run up to Christmas with the stores group reporting a 6.9% growth even though total home sales were down 2.3%. Carpetright shareholders have backed the plan for the UK’s largest floors retailer to be sold to Meditor – an investment group who are already the company’s largest shareholder and a major creditor after buying the retailer’s debt in August. This deal, returning Carpetright to private ownership, is worth c. £15m and should go through in Q1 2020. Carpet imports into the UK showed some modest growth in Q4 with figures for October up 2.3%. But the most eye-catching figure is the performance of Turkey which, as European imports into the UK fell, reported a massive 41% rise in imports in the first three quarters of 2019, totalling £80m. Victoria Plc’s half-year results to end September showed carpet sales in the U.K. and the rest of Europe were up 4.0 percent combined to £144m over the period. The acquisitive group’s earnings overall were up nearly a third, rising 29% to £58.6m on sales, up 16% to £316m.

the same time that David Attenborough hit our screens with the shocking revelations about what such waste was doing to damage marine life.
For example, in iSense the top selling Serenity will see a new 14-option colour bank in June as will the popular Splendour range.
AW celebrated the completion of this brand achievement in the grand opening of their “Experience Centre” at the company’s HQ in Ronse, Belgium, in December, and buying groups, leading retailers and flooring buyers arrived from across the UK and Europe to join in.
In Invictus, heavyweight Magnificus will be recoloured in 2020, and to underline the success of this brand, AW revealed that Magnificus, the flagship of the Invictus collection, is set to become its best-seller in 2020 – brands really matter when their quality and performance makes consumers less price sensitive.
Any other manufacturer might call the venue a super showroom, but AW’s ultra sophisticated presentation and technology, and the series of themed showcase rooms for each brand certainly created a centre of experience for visitors. “2020 is going to be a little different for us. No new brand launches!” says Gavin. “Instead, we have a huge programme to build on this incredible platform, making the best just better and better and taking retailers with us using new presentations and top quality merchandising.”
Also look out for refreshed contemporary tones in popular ranges including Aquila, Sophistication, Promenade and Bellaire during the year. So with all those new colours, 2020 is not going to be dull for AW customers. And with all those solid brands to build on, it’s going to be profitable for them too!

Retailers invest in Invictus LVT AW’s dramatic entry into LVT was one of the market’s most interesting events in 2019 and the decision to associate it with the already hugely successful Invictus brand has now proved out in the appetite of retailers to stock the collection. “Retailers really want this brand for LVT,” says Gavin. “This is designer flooring and the smart marketing adds to the appeal, but the actual product presentation is very consumer friendly.” The flagship of the Invictus LVT point-of-sale is the impressive, interactive point-of-sale unit that dominates a retail environment with style. Retailers are required to make a substantial investment to help finance the cost of these systems but AW has enjoyed considerable success in placing them around the country. The Invictus LVT launch was well-timed with many retailers looking for a trusted partner to launch or extend their LVT offer. And the portfolio of 84 options in total is well judged as a complete offer – a wide range of traditional best-sellers alongside distinctive, creative options such as the leaves from the banana tree Tropical Forest, elegant Victorian scrolls and a unique colourful cubist Designer Parquet décor. “The timing is also perfect for the great options we have for parquet, a sector that has gone huge for sales now,” says Gavin. “Retailers can really respond to current consumer trends with this collection.”

NEWS Guest Brian Moore
Recofloor rugby kicks off Recofloor’s 2020 rugby-themed awards event kicks off next March at the world-famous Twickenham Stadium, where the achievements of the vinyl flooring recycling scheme’s members will be celebrated in style. Guest host former England and British and Irish Lions rugby union star turned commentator Brian Moore will take centre stage at the ninth annual awards event to be held on Wednesday March 25th. He will present trophies and certificates to members of Polyflor and Altro’s national take back scheme who have excelled across a variety of award categories. Recofloor’s 700-plus members continue to deliver consistent success in collecting vinyl flooring waste for recycling and since 2009 have helped to divert nearly 5,000 tonnes from landfill. Such achievements are recognised annually in a series of various award categories with award winners keen to share their recycling success stories with customers, prospects and the flooring/construction sector as a whole. Urging members to consider recent projects they’ve been involved with, Recofloor Scheme Manager Richard McKinlay says: “We’re on the look-out for interesting, innovative and inspiring applications of how Recofloor has made a difference on all types of projects, large and small. Every year, our award event turns the focus on the tremendous work undertaken by our members to collect recyclable vinyl flooring for reuse in new products. It takes on-going effort and commitment to increase tonnages year-on-year and that’s why we want to hear about and recognise your success!” During the day, Brian will share stories and anecdotes from his decades-long career and there will be ample opportunities to network, share best practice and learn more about how the Recofloor scheme can positively benefit your business. Richard adds: “Entries open soon for the awards, so please start thinking about how you can enter and join the celebrations.” T 0161 355 7618 www.recofloor.org

Fixing the mix to add value
Quality goes up market to drive better business Balta are set to boost the value of consumer sales for UK retailers. “We all see that there is little real growth in the market so our mission is to make opportunities for better business for our customers,” says marketing director Geert Vanden Bossche. Balta embarked on an ambitious programme to alter the mix of its product portfolio two years ago to move their emphasis upmarket. The focus is on performance products which command a higher price and generate stronger margins. “This is a win for everyone,” says Geert. “Of course it makes sense for Balta’s business but the approach enables retailers to make each sale more valuable with a strong story to tell on quality and performance, and consumers benefit by getting what they pay for… a better product.” Since the project started, Balta have shown an impressive commitment to quality and carried it through across all their product development in each sector. Now they want the world to know and notice, so a major investment in Q1 will be to roll out several new ranges in the UK backed up by stylish new point-of-sale.
Amaryllis from the Eternity range
40 January 2020
Having analysed the market so closely, Balta’s campaign reveals some interesting new trends. While soft saxony styles continue to sell strongly, there is also a growing apetitite for substantial, quality twists, using more robust yarns. Balta also have a little more focus on colour as a component of the portfolio. And finally, growing residential interest in modular flooring in the form of home style carpet tiles. The Charm collection, launched in 2019 as part of Balta’s Stainsafe range, is a great example of this – a robust polypropylene twist with the versatility of three weights and 14 modern pastel colours. Saxonies are reinvented at Balta with a new a collection of solution dyed nylon (SDN) Eternity ranges which Balta expects to have strong market appeal. The fibre offers resilient performance and the clean, bright colours associated with quality nylons together with bleach cleanable properties and an extremely high light fastness.

SDN is important to Balta as the company has “not sourced the usual yarn,” says Geert. “We have the advantage of developing our own SDN yarn which is a little softer and where we have complete control over the colours which are carefully chosen for the UK residential market.” The Eternity ranges Primrose and Amaryllis are tenth-gauge carpets with a super-smooth touch that will be available in the UK in the first quarter with more options to come later in the year. Balta is tuned in to interior trends and reckons more subtle colours are called for by modern consumers. Expect to see three or four shades outside the grey/beige options in every range going forward with hints of blue, green and gold to the fore. The success of Balta’s silky Satino collection will be enhanced early in 2020 with exactly this kind of recolouring for the popular Royale range, a luxurious polymide which retailers are increasingly including in their standard offer for style savvy consumers.
Luxury Carpet Tiles for the home market
Carpet tiles are coming home The final focus for Balta is a new exploration of the market for carpet tiles in the residential market. The company’s LCT (Luxury Carpet Tiles) brand is increasing the breadth of its appeal, launching the LCT Home collection using softer SDN yarns in contemporary colours that can be mixed and matched. This is an intriguing approach which has great potential to meet the trends for modular flooring and urban living – introducing the incredible practicality of carpet tiles to a new domestic audience. A new Comfy Back backing, made from recycled felt, enhances the comfort level and Balta also have clever accessories which bind tiles together to make a flexible rug.
A host of other initiatives abound at Balta including two additions to their growing flatweave range of sisal-style polypropylene carpets (for use indoors and out) and a busy year of developments in the familyfriendly Stainsafe collection.
We all see that there is little real growth in the “market so our mission is to make opportunities for better business for our customers, ”

Flower on Flooring Drive for use of recycled material gathers pace in flooring Sustainable products can be seen to be emerging in all areas of the flooring sector, providing environmentally-aware consumers with an increasing number of choices to meet their requirements. Beginning with options for sustainable carpet, Grosvenor Wilton reports it is working towards creating a fully biodegradable product. This will be made out of natural materials that, under the correct conditions, decompose in a timely manner while continuing to offer many years of good use as expected from well-made Wilton carpets. “We recommend buying well and investing in the best that you can afford to ensure you have a product that offers longevity,” says the company.
“We hear more and more from retailers who convert extra sales from their consumer enquiries because they have a professional and ethical story to tell on disposal,” he continues. “And consumers are now more willing to pay for the uplift and disposal if they know it is being handled responsibly.” His company offers its carpet and underlay crusher that includes waste collection and recycling. “We work with a national network of carpet recyclers to calculate what the overall cost would be to recycle retailers/ contractors waste compared to landfill.
It further states that the industry is pushing to use more recycled material as an alternative to virgin material, benefiting the planet and preserving its natural resources. AW Ecolan polyester fibre is extruded from old drinks bottles, for example, and the ‘6 Again’ American project repolymerises nylon by shearing. There is also a race for carpet that can be completely repolymerised at the end of its life, currently focused on polyester that is still in its early developmental stages. Associated Weavers provides its Sedna carpet as evidence of its efforts to offer increased sustainability within its flooring collections. In addition to providing consumers with a soft, luxurious and durable carpet, its use of recycled material offers further benefits. Sedna is manufactured with Econyl regenerated nylon, a yarn made from recycled waste material such as old carpets and abandoned fishing nets collected from the bottom of the sea. This supports the company’s claim to save thousands of sea creatures, such as turtles, dolphins and seals that will no longer get caught in this life-threatening waste.

“We work with a national network of carpet recyclers to calculate what the overall cost would be to recycle retailers/contractors waste compared to landfill.” “We offer a free, no obligation site survey to establish the financial viability and let the retailer/contractor decide,” says Mr Wells. Subfloor preparation products manufacturer F Ball sales director Darren Kenyon says the company has an ongoing commitment to reducing plastic waste and its effect on wildlife and the wider environment. “We have moved towards recyclable alternatives for packaging our products, many of which are also made from recycled materials. Most recently, we have introduced recyclable ‘eco pouches’ for our Stopgap 400 Repair compound and Stopgap 500 Micro floor finishing compound.” These require significantly less plastic to produce than the products’ previous packaging and follows the launch of a fully recyclable version of its 5l plastic bottles, used for gauging liquids, primers and tackifiers, and a new 20l recyclable bottle for its Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier.
Varuna from Associated Weavers Further to this, Sedna has an Eco FusionBac textile back, made from 100% recycled PET plastic bottles, the company concludes. Kenburn Waste Management’s Simon Wells refers to growing environmental awareness of the need to reduce the tonnes of carpet waste sent to landfill. “This has been an industry issue for years but now consumers are asking retailers how they handle their waste and therefore responsible disposal has become a marketing opportunity and a financially viable one,” he says. 42 January 2020

“F Ball has also partnered with Recofloor, the vinyl take-back scheme pioneered by Altro and Polyflor, to trial a scheme that provides contractors with a convenient means of recycling the new plastic bottles and buckets,” says Mr Kenyon. Further options for sustainable flooring are provided by Moduleo for luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), which can include a proportion of recyclable plastic, with technological advancements meaning the material is lightweight and durable whilst remaining realistic. LVT includes eco-friendly fibreglass which has a long-lifecycle and reduces the amount of flooring put into landfill. Once vinyl has reached the end of its life, LVT can be reused and added back into the production process to form new eco boards. It also requires no harsh chemicals when cleaning, meaning the tiles are not contaminated with toxic substances when they need replacing.
River Wood from Moduleo Moduleo is manufactured in a purpose-built, energy-efficient production plant in Avelgem, Belgium and all LVT flooring contains up to 50% recycled materials and is itself recyclable, says the company. Altro states that its adhesive-free flooring excels in its environmental credentials. These are designed to be sustainable and with 5% recycled content, it means the company uses less of the earth’s valuable natural resources. Altro further states that its flooring is 100% recyclable at end of life, with minimal waste as there is no need for a damp-proof membrane (DPM) or adhesive products, thereby, reducing unwanted landfill content. As it is 100% recyclable, the floor can be uplifted quickly and easily and any leftover floor can be used elsewhere. At the end of its life the floor can be recycled via a Recofloor collection point and regenerated into useful traffic calming products such as traffic cones, the company concludes. NEWS Floors & more Domotex The keynote theme for Domotex 2020, which runs from 10 to 13 January in Hannover, Germany, is “AtMySphere”. Under this overall thematic heading, the world’s leading trade fair for carpets and floor coverings is focusing on specific wellbeing-enhancing aspects of the spaces where we live and work. One such aspect is “Floor & More” – the idea that rugs, cork elements and design panels need not be confined to our floors, but can adorn ceilings and walls also, creating an integrated design – a coherent, individual atmosphere that further enhances our sense of personal wellbeing. The upcoming Domotex will feature an array of products that exemplify this approach. Oriental Weavers, for example, produces tapestries that can be matched with its rugs and carpets to give rooms a stylistically coherent look. Its “Seychelles” product is a modern machine-woven tapestry featuring an atmospheric, abstract pattern in cool tones, available in five sizes. Used in combination with its “Kelim” cushion coverings, with their vintage designs and warm tones that complement Oriental-style floor coverings, they create the ultimate in harmonious atmospheres. “Kelim”, which is available in three sizes and is made of a hardwearing mix of chenille, viscose and polyester, can also be used for squabs. “Dekwall” by Wicanders, a brand owned by AMORIM Deutschland GmbH, is a collection of cork-based wall elements inspired by nature. Available in a large range of patterns, textures, colors and shapes, it can be combined with Wicanders cork floor coverings to create eye-catching interiors. Options range from matching floor and wall designs to single feature walls made of Deckwall modules. And because they are made of natural cork, the modules create comforting living and work environments that are quiet and warm. These vibrantly structured wall solutions by Wicanders comprise two cork layers and are easy-care and hypo-allergenic. “SwissClic” panels by Swiss Krono deliver the ultimate in simplicity when it comes to realizing integrated interior concepts. The high-precision joining technology means the panels can be clicked together quickly and easily, without any special tools, to create continuous runs of wall or ceiling cladding with virtually invisible joints. The panels can be surfaced with a special primer foil, enabling them to be painted in almost any color. SwissClic panels are also available in authentic wood-look and unpolished concrete-look, yielding virtually endless interior design options. They are hard-wearing and easy-care and are also available as sound-absorbing acoustic cladding, capable of cutting ambient noise by up to 50 percent. Modern floor, wall and ceiling coverings that can be used to create coordinated interiors with that all-important feel-good factor will be on show at Domotex 2020, which runs from 10 to 13 January at the Hannover Exhibition Center in Germany. Inspired by the “ATMYSPHERE” keynote theme, exhibitors will display innovative products perfect for creating harmonized interiors – Floor & More. T 0161 355 7618 www.recofloor.org

Flooring
Factsheet Adhesive Types Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticized PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors.
ADHESIVES
SELECTION CHECKLIST
The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time: The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked. Odour: Low odour, solvent free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.
Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels.
Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.
Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive.
Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.
Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.
Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured. Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but
this criteria must be checked where appropriate. Subfloor: What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard. While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces. The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation. Special Performance: Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments. Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.
The Perfect System for your Designer Floor The perfect adhesive choice for luxury vinyl tiles Choose Styccobond F46, the market leading pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. Stopgap 300 HD, Stopgap P131 and Styccobond F46. The perfect system for simply stunning luxurious floors.

of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support
Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet from Interfloor Eco-friendly underlay Perfect for people who focus on ‘green’ living With more people making a conscious effort to ‘green’ their lifestyles, demand for sustainable and eco-friendly flooring products is at its highest ever. Interfloor has increased the proportion of underlays manufactured from recycled products from 16% to over 70% since 2008. We manufacture most of our underlays from recycled material, our crumb rubber and PU foam underlays contain approximately 80% recycled content. The crumb rubber is made from recycled car tyres and some 3 million are recycled every year to make our underlay, while PU foam is made from manufacturing waste (off-cuts from the furniture and automotive industries).
“Tredaire Kensington Deluxe is 55% recycled car tyres and 25% recycled plastic bottles.” Kensington Deluxe 80% recycled for the ultimate feel good factor We also manufacture underlays which have a high post-consumer recycled content. Tredaire Kensington Deluxe is a high-quality carpet underlay comprising 55% recycled car tyres (the rubber layer) and 25% recycled PET plastic bottles (the felt layer). Kensington Deluxe’s unique combination of rubber crumb and polyester felt creates an underlay with superior wear and comfort properties. It’s the perfect choice for Wilton and Axminster style carpets. The polyester felt backing means that carpets with stitched joins bed into the top felt layer and prevent wear along the join.
Interfloor manufactures Tredaire and Duralay, leading brands underlay market, that are recognized by customers as brands of quality, and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 54

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. www.interfloor.com
The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet. Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home.
www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Poor or old underlay will...
• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Combination
Crumb
PU foam
www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk
Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.
www.underlay.com
Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.
www.luxeunderlay.com
Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Fading on Wool
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Static
Sprouting
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
58
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment. THE STOCKLISTS January 2020
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
Flattening
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
Shading
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
Pile Reversal
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
Shedding
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Indentations
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder. THE STOCKLISTS January 2020

Flooring factsheet Carpet types
Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE
Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop. Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality. Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
BONDED
Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles. THE STOCKLISTS January 2020
CUT PILE
Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas. Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours. Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP
When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.
Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 65
