Stain Away Collection
Soaraway StainAway
You won’t find the word ‘soaraway’ in your dictionary. But then you won’t find the word ‘StainAway’ there either. It’s our patented brand
name for one of the most successful stain resistant
carpets on the market anywhere in the world. And
‘soaraway’ describes it well because, ever since its launch way back in the 1990s', its sales have soared
into the Associated Weavers hall of fame – making it the most popular choice for our selected retailers.
Just to refresh your memory – if you want your carpet to remain as pristine as it looks in this
photograph, StainAway is the obvious choice for people who suffer from messy children, messy pets or any other grubby activities that could ruin the look of their new carpet.
Cleanable luxury for years and years StainAway’s bleach-cleanable 100% polypropylene construction is the secret of its success. That’s why
we’ve awarded the range with 10-, 15- or 20-year stain and wear warranties. The thoroughly hard-
wearing pile makes the StainAway brand ideal for any room in the house, from a child’s playroom to a smart dining or living room.
New shades of autumn
With autumn just around the corner, we’ll soon be
appreciating the need for quality and luxury underfoot during the muddy season. We’ve chosen this year’s colourings with care. Most of the new
ranges feature 16 tempting colour choices, ranging
from Mellow Mocha to Frosted Dawn – names that are evocative of the passing seasons, yet styles that are versatile enough to fit snugly into virtually any room décor.
Planned recolourings to reach your store soon
include StainAway Harvest Heathers, a 1148gm twist; StainGuard Harvest Heathers, a 1690gm
twist; cut-pile StainGuard Saxony, a heavy wear domestic with 20-year stain and wear warranty; and StainAway Twist with 1020gm pile.
stain & wear warranty
Make the most of summer You’ll already have seen our additions and
improvements coming into your stores. Now is the
time to give your customers even greater choices in the enviable StainAway collections. Launched this spring, new offerings have included tough
soft cut-pile saxonies Bellaire (1020gm), Promenade
(1525gm), and Sophistication (2220gm). Completing the line-up are cut-pile saxony Temptation at
2050gm and Tuftex Twist, as tough as it sounds, but with a mere 700gm pile weight. But then all
StainAway carpets are tough enough to take the
wear, yet not to show it. Contact your area
manager and get stocked up for autumn, with some scintillating, soaraway sales to look forward to.

Carpet&FlooringReview Rugs for retailers 24/7
Reacting to changes in the buying habits of both retailers and consumers, Flair Rugs has launched a new e-commerce website allowing its trade partners to order rugs, access stock availability and monitor deliveries 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
“We’ve really been doing our homework when it comes to analysing purchasing habits,” explains Gareth Davies, Sales & Marketing Director, Flair Rugs. “Following significant market research and analysing feedback from our retail partners, it was clear that our customers were embracing the digital age and enjoying the added value it brings to their business. With this in mind, we soon realised that if consumers were able to purchase products any time of the day or night, why shouldn’t retailers, and so we set about building an online platform to fulfil the requirements of our loyal customer base." “We believe this system is a better solution than anything that has gone before, fully appreciating that buying is no longer a 9am-5pm process, and that retailers may turn to their mobiles, tablets or desktops to carry out such activity in the evenings or on weekends. Our e-commerce site seamlessly falls in line with the modern-day lifestyle, meaning our products can be explored and ordered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and with consummate ease. Live stock updates enable the retailer to discover what’s in stock and when it’s deliverable, all at the click of a button.” Early feedback has been of a hugely positive nature, in terms of both traffic and comments on the website’s intuitive nature and ease of use. This e-commerce platform is just the latest addition to Flair Rugs’ high-level service offering, joining other popular provisions that include exclusive products, next-day delivery, volume discount and custom branding. Summertime, and Livyn is easy
With nearly 200 professionals now accredited as Master Installers of Quick-Step Livyn, the Academy for Excellence Flooring is seeing strong uptake in courses for luxury vinyl flooring.
Reflecting the growing stature of Quick-Step Livyn as one of the best quality LVT products currently available, the rise is closely linked to the introduction of the brand’s Pulse collection, which has introduced new performance features to this competitive segment of the flooring market. “Course take-up is a good indicator of trends within the industry and we’ve certainly seen a marked interest in the Livyn Master Installer programme,” explains Lee Thompson, technical manager. “Installers have been attracted by Livyn’s growing reputation as a highperformance floor that delivers some of the industry’s best scratchresistance and world-class stability. “Through the programme at the Academy, professionals can learn how best to exploit this stability through installation techniques that offer a fast way of working, while still delivering the results expected of any floor bearing the Quick-Step name.” Quick-Step say Livyn Pulse is the most stable LVT floating floor available, meaning it can be used in applications where it is usual to resort to stick-down products. Alongside, stands Livyn’s impressive scratch and stain-resistance, again among the best-in-class. The Livyn Master Installer scheme covers the performance advantages of Quick-Step’s LVT products, as well as correct subfloor preparation and installation. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk THE STOCKLISTS July 2017

Interwall Flooring has announced that it has completed the integration of Timbertherm Flooring Ltd and has the exclusive rights to import and distribute Timbertherm wood flooring.
This new innovation provides a world-first alternative to dual wood floor and underfloor heating specifications. Its integral ‘smart-heat design’ provides style, health, installation and cost benefits – and is suitable for new builds, renovations and retrofits. The full range of 20 finishes will be available exclusively from Interwall Flooring, with new designs to follow. Featuring integral Far Infrared technology, Timbertherm conducts heat through built-in nano-carbon conductors, warming to 26ºc (max) in less than five minutes. It can be installed – like a standard ‘tongue and groove’ board - on most dry, level surfaces. Floor height issues associated with separate heating pads are eliminated, as is the subfloor preparation necessary with traditional wet underfloor heating systems. Timbertherm’s multi-layered construction has a sustainable hardwood surface layer and a water resistant prefinish, making it ideal for all areas of the home, as well as commercial environments. It also creates a healthy heat - warming objects without raising dust particles - and minimises temperature fluctuations, for greater efficiency and reduced heating costs. Interwall Flooring offers all Timbertherm designs with a 10-year guarantee and production complies with EN60335-1 and EN60335-2-96 (patent pending). T (0)20 3778 0408

Robust retro
Polyflor was recently chosen to create a retro inspired interior design scheme for Nelson’s Diner in Newbury, Berkshire.
Approximately 300m² of Polyflor flooring was installed by The Hull Flooring Company Limited at Nelson’s Diner which offers American style cuisine in Kennet Shopping Centre. Expona Commercial PUR luxury vinyl tiles in Light Grey Concrete were fitted around the booth seating area, with the Black Matrix design used for a highlight arc shade near the bar area. Expona Bevel Line PUR tiles in the pale Portland Stone design were also installed around the bar seating area. Polyflex Plus PU homogeneous tiles in the Anglian Red and Mourne Grey shades were used to create a chequerboard pattern floor. Both the Expona Commercial and Expona Bevel Line luxury vinyl tile collections feature wood, stone and abstract effects which are ideal for heavy commercial environments in hospitality, retail and leisure sectors where there is likely to be a high level of foot traffic. Shelly Francis, owner of Nelson’s Diner commented, “We’re delighted with the finished look of the diner and the flooring complements the interior design scheme perfectly. The fact it is easy to maintain is also a big bonus for our staff and the everyday running of the restaurant.” T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

NEWS After the flood
A range of products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd., including Styccobond F3 adhesive, have been used to deliver a high quality, long-lasting floor finish in Plaisterers Hall, an event venue in London, as part of a refurbishment of the building following flood damage.
EdgeCo Ltd. were subcontracted to refurbish the flooring in the venue, which covered an area of 900m2. When contractors arrived on site, the original carpet floorcovering had been removed. The contractors first applied Stopgap P131 general purpose primer over the subfloor, to seal the entire area, and to aid adhesion of the smoothing underlayment. Once the primer had dried, contractors applied Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment over the entire screed. Stopgap 1200 Pro is a low odour, fast setting, fast drying, two component smoothing underlayment suitable for preparing sound internal subfloors prior to the installation of new floorcoverings. A Durafit carpet underlay system was then adhered, using F. Ball’s Styccobond F40 high tack dual bond adhesive. Finally, Styccobond F3 adhesive was used to adhere the carpet to the underlay system. Styccobond F3 is a water based rubber/resin flooring adhesive that has excellent wet grab with an early build up of strength. Clive Manning of Edgeco Ltd., commented: “We always use F. Ball products as we can be certain that they will always enable us to create a professional, durable floor finish. The range of products that our F. Ball representative advised us to use for this refurbishment helped us to recover this floor from flood damage and create a room that our customer was very pleased with.” T 01583 361 6335 www.f-ball.co.uk
Fast track to Harrogate
The 55th Flooring Show is fast approaching, with over 180 exhibitors preparing for the show and visitors registering for fast track entry to the show.
Organisers are urging visitors to plan their trip in advance using the useful links on the website at www.theflooringshow.com to avoid any last minute rushing and disappointment. Entry into The Flooring Show is completely free of charge for buyers and by registering early; you can avoid queuing on the day. To register, simply go to the website and complete the short form and plan your trip to make the most of The Flooring Show. Harrogate has an amazing selection of hotels, within walking distance of the Harrogate Convention Centre, to suit every budget and style. Again this year, Reservation Highway is the show’s official accommodation agent, able to offer rooms at discounted prices for show attendees. Contact them on admin@reservation-highway.co.uk or 01423 525577. The organisers have warned that there are bogus accommodation agents contacting exhibitors from many shows across the UK claiming to get discounted rates for hotels and so visitors should reckon to use the official agent Reservation Highway to be safe. www.theflooringshow.com

NEWS On the level
To celebrate the launch of the new Pro-Screed Gold versatile leveller from floorwise; fitters, contractors and end-users alike have the chance to win big with a fantastic double promotion.
The first rewards anyone who purchases the bag and bottle levelling and smoothing product from participating floorwise distributors. Simply order five bag and bottle systems and walk away with a free premium floorwise trowel that makes using this new introduction even easier.
Goodweave success
Also, supporting the launch is the opportunity for one lucky user of pro-Screed Gold to win an Apple iPad worth over £500. By simply photographing pro-screed Gold installation in action, and posting on selected social media channels with #proscreedgold, users are automatically entered in to a prize draw.
GoodWeave International has been named as one of ten successful bidders for a share of the first Modern Slavery Innovation Fund (MSIF), totalling up to £6m, initiated by the UK Government. GoodWeave, the anti child-labour and anti-forced labour labelling scheme, has made major in-roads into reducing child labour by 80% in the South Asian rug industry, since its inception 1995.
Richard Bailey, Managing Director, floorwise, commented: “With any launch from floorwise comes a sense of excitement and anticipation, but for the launch of our fast and versatile levelling and smoothing compound we decided to elevate the hype to new levels. “
This new investment will fund the expansion of the labelling scheme into new product sectors and directly help more UK companies and leading high street brands to effectively tackle modern slavery in their supply chains.
Pro-Screed Gold is a high-quality powder and latex liquid that combines to make it the go-to bag and bottle levelling and smoothing choice. With ProScreed Gold there is no need to prime, meaning installers can reduce time spent on-site, with rapid setting and excellent flow properties also adding to the product’s ease of use.
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimates 168 million children and 21 million forced labourers toil in the world today. Standard corporate compliance and auditing programmes fail to help the vast majority of victims, because their reach remains within factories. Meanwhile, the most exploited workers are virtually invisible at the bottom of the chain in difficult-to-trace locations, including cottage industries and home workers. This situation is typical of the handmade rug sector in India and Nepal, where GoodWeave already operates. The grant will allow GoodWeave to fast-track developments into other manufacturing sectors in India and Nepal and help more UK companies establish a real-time map of their supply chains, from factories right down to home-workers.
Pro-Screed Gold can be used over old adhesive residue to again increase the speed of a job, and is compatible with underfloor heating systems. floorwise’s latest two-part levelling and smoothing compound is also moisture tolerant, and can be used under or over a DPM. T 01509 673974
www.floorwise.co.uk
GoodWeave is to initially receive around £600,000 from the Modern Slavery Innovation Fund over the coming two years. The NGO has now set out in more detail how it plans to spend the money, specifying three key areas, which will all directly help partnered companies to reduce modern slavery from their supply chains: Nina Smith, CEO, GoodWeave International explains the funding will have a major, positive impact on the most exploited workers and encourages UK retailers and companies to get involved: ”The power of our model comes from partnering with business to reach bottom-tier workers who are ordinarily hidden from sight. More than 90% of the children we rescue are identified in cottage industry settings. The MSIF funding will enable us to reach into more supply chains and implement programs to protect children and adults from forms of modern slavery.” www.goodweave.org

Going for Guild
Independent carpet retailers were given a chance to boost their sales skills, thanks to Cormar Carpets who hosted the latest Flooring Guild training course.
Twenty retailers, from carpet shops around the country, attended the three-day ‘Selling Quality Carpets’ event at Cormar’s Brookhouse Mill, run in conjunction with the Flooring Guild. Designed to help retailers train staff who are new to the carpet and flooring trade, the course provides essential product knowledge about carpets, selling techniques and how to plan, measure and estimate effectively. David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets said: “Having run this course for a number of years now, it’s still in demand - and the feedback we get from retailers is invaluable in helping us make it better every year. It has got to be in everyone’s interests to ensure that retail staff are as knowledgeable as they can be and comfortable understanding their consumers’ needs.” The Flooring Guild is a ‘not for profit’ organisation, which was founded in 1999 to raise standards in the industry through training and educational programmes. The organisation aims to provide a formal induction programme to assist people coming into the industry and a skills development programme, to motivate current employees. Fit for the final
The NICF has announced that the six finalists for the Carpet Fitter of the Year 2017 competition have been selected following very closely fought semi-finals. The judges have all stated that the standard of fitting by the semi-finalists this year was extremely high and made the judging more challenging than ever.
The successful fitters who have progressed to the Finals taking place over 17 and 18 September in the Kings Suite at The Flooring Show in Harrogate are: Darren Ash
Alfrick, Worcestershire

Fast food flooring
Mapei’s Mapefloor i302 resin flooring has been installed in an area covering over 1,200m2 at the Morrisons Supermarket food processing plant in Northwich, Cheshire, to renovate the existing flooring and provide a safe and durable solution.
The area covered in this project was in preparation for the installation of a new food processing production line. Dates had already been set to install new machinery at the factory, so the project had to complete within a short timeframe so as not to delay further works, whilst simultaneously not compromising on quality of finish. The floor covering was installed within one week, with the machinery being installed on time and to specification. Mapei’s technical specialists were heavily involved throughout the project, visiting the site with the contractors, Respol, prior to specification and installation to agree on the installation process. Consideration had to be given to the processing plant remaining operational during the preparation and installation of the flooring, therefore all operations had to be strictly controlled, particularly concerning the creation of dust and odours. Stuart Turley from Installers Respol commented: “The system itself was easy to install and has proven to give a good finish.” As the flooring was installed in a food processing plant, the products used for the new floor had to be ‘taint-free’, hence the specification of the Mapefloor i302 resin flooring which is safe and compliant for use in areas of food preparation and storage. Itec emphasises acoustic
Itec Contract Floors provides installers with a single source for all their acoustic flooring needs, perfect for those on the search for a smart, sound-reducing choice in education and student accommodation environments.
Itec’s acoustic flooring stable is split into four popular collections: Optimise Timber, Silento Timber and Silento Design, available for immediate delivery up and down the UK, and the special order Optimise 50/70. These floorcoverings are available in two and fourmetre widths, comprising up to 19dB of sound reduction so helping to reduce the noise of heavy footprints and wheeled traffic - crucial in locations of this type. This said, the Optimise and Silento collections have been designed with an equal focus on aesthetics, as explained by David Bigland, Sales Director UK: “At Itec Contract Floors, we’re proud to offer installers one of the most diverse choices of commercial vinyl flooring around, and as can be seen in this quartet of collections, this extends to acoustic options. These floors are really tough to beat on sound reduction, however we appreciated more than ever that flooring choice must be multi-faceted, providing not only practicalities such as sound absorption, easy cleaning and slip resistance, but also beautiful looks that will keep their appeal for time to come.” The four acoustic collections are available in a versatile selection of designs, from traditional and washed woods through to stylish plains including of-the-moment silvers and greys. It is this attention to detail in both aesthetics and practical credentials that has led to Itec being specified for a number of large-scale education and student accommodation projects UK-wide, including the recently developed Fusion House at Bristol, and GEMS Primary Academy, Twickenham. All Itec acoustic floors from the Optimise and Silento stables are available to explore at the new Itec Contract Floors website, Here, specifiers and contractors will find a facility that intuitively guides them to the floor that best meets their needs. Skip cost crusher
Battersea based carpet retailer The Carpet Bureau are one of the latest carpet retailers to install a Kenburn ‘Carpet Crusher’ for compacting and recycling their new and uplifted carpet and underlay waste.
The Carpet Bureau director Bryan Robison comments: “Based in South London we¹ve noticed our skip costs have increased at an incredible rate over the past few years. We therefore needed to find a more cost effective and environmentally friendly solution for disposing of our waste”. “We¹d read about the successes Kenburn were having with other retailers so asked their advice on how best to handle and dispose of our waste,” said Bryan. “We¹ve been delighted not only with the performance of the ‘carpet crusher’ itself but also the service we receive from the waste to energy company who collect the waste and use it as a fuel to power concrete kilns at a lower cost than sending it to landfill”. “Also our zero to landfill policy has been enthusiastically welcomed by our customers”. All-purpose appeal Brockway accelerates expansion
Kidderminster based Brockway Carpets and its new sister business The Grosvenor Wilton Company Limited has launched a recruitment campaign aimed at expanding its workforce, demonstrating the brand’s desire to push design boundaries to new limits. The announcement follows Brockway’s recent acquisition of Grosvenor Wilton, one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious independent carpet manufacturers. Grosvenor Wilton is looking for a host of full-time and part-time staff to support the company’s expansion plans at its Hartlebury, Worcestershire factory. Chairman Charles Annable said: “We’re looking to recruit across a wide range of skills and experience from experienced weavers to junior apprentices. So those who join us have the chance to develop their skills, and share our pride in the creation of the finest quality, hand crafted carpets for some highly prestigious projects.” Brockway is also seeking a range of staff to fill other tufting and ancillary roles at its Kidderminster factory on Old Chester Road.

Brintons blow to Kidderminster
Brintons Carpets plans to end axminster weaving at its Kidderminster factory after an ‘operational review’ which may result in the loss of 60 jobs – more than half the workforce at the manufacturing site. Brintons said its Stourport Road site remained an important location within the group. It will continue to house the company’s dyeing plant, Wilton weaving, the warehousing and distribution of residential carpets and the group’s head office. Rob Greenfield, group manufacturing and logistics director said: “Brintons operates in an extremely competitive global marketplace. It is vital we constantly review our business operations and are able to respond to prevailing trading conditions. The proposed restructure is part of our long term strategy to safeguard the company’s future interests.” Brintons was bought by The Carlyle Group in September 2011. Its last accounts show earnings after tax had risen to £14.5 million in the 12 months to October 1, 2016.The company makes its carpets in the UK, Poland, Portugal and India, employing a total of around 1,800 staff. 32 July 2017

Upright innovation
Setting new standards in the professional cleaning industry, the SEBO Evolution range of upright vacuum cleaners provides effective, userfriendly cleaning and excellent reliability year after year. Every detail is thoughtfully designed and reflects SEBO’s reputation as an innovator. The machines are light to use, easy to maintain and can be used for long working periods; features include fast, tool-free cable change and simple brush height adjustment. The SEBO Evolution establishes benchmarks in durability and usability and is available in three models - 300, 350 and 450 - which offer working widths of 30cm, 36cm and 46cm. Sophisticated design solutions ensure cleaning tasks are simplified while time and cost savings are made in relation to machine servicing and maintenance due to quick access to all parts.
Designed to be efficient and ergonomic, the SEBO Evolution features a comfortable handle which ensures easy control and smooth manoeuvrability. The handy wand and integrated suction hose are immediately ready to clean hard-to-reach areas or typical abovethe-floor items, such as furniture. Full-size crevice and upholstery nozzles are neatly and conveniently stored at the rear of the machine.
Blind leading
The Louis de Poortere bespoke rug and runner service has been popular with both retailers and consumers for a number of years, and this reputation is set to be extended with the introduction of a blind finishing option, exclusively available to the Haute Couture portfolio. Blind finishing allows for a neater, more sophisticated effect through its invisible binding, ready for implementation on a customer’s bespoke rug or runner, and giving an alternative aesthetic to traditional serging or ultrafine binding. This is ideal for working into modern interior schemes that require a minimalist approach, and look to deliver a more clean and clinical style in their fabrics and furnishings. “Behind the scenes, Louis de Poortere works tirelessly to ensure it’s fully abreast of the latest trends and demands within the market,” explains Alan Russell, UK Sales Director, Louis de Poortere, “and we’ve certainly reaped the rewards of this in our latest enhancements to the Haute Couture collection”. “It has been established that homeowners are increasingly seeking a cleaner finish in many of their interior products, and with this in mind, our team has developed an invisible binding option, named ‘blind finishing’, for use across our Haute Couture Tailor Made rugs and runners service. We’ve already witnessed a fantastic reaction to blind finishing across our UK retail network, and we fully expect this to continue as we move through 2017.” While the Louis de Poortere Tailor Made service is available for use with all Louis de Poortere broadloom designs, this new binding option is only available to the popular Haute Couture and its versatile range of styles.
The brush height has four levels which can easily be adjusted by the foot or telescopic tube. If the brush of the SEBO Evolution is obstructed, the machine turns off automatically and a red indicator gives notification of a problem. The brush strip is changed without the use of tools by simply pressing a button, releasing the side plate and sliding out the brush strip.
“We have decided to only offer this new binding option within our Haute Couture collection as we felt the unique look and feel it delivers lends itself best to the designs available. We were also keen to add value and improved versatility to the portfolio, something we believe retailers will benefit from as we enter the busy Autumn sales period,” concludes Alan.

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!
Make it British! British Wool headed to London last month to attend the ‘Meet the Manufacturer’ event. This high energy trade show brings together over 100 British manufacturers at the Truman Brewery situated just off Brick Lane. The aim was to beat the drum for British made products of all types and British Wool took a space to showcase the strengths of our fantastic fibre. Brexit seems to have had a major impact on the British manufacturing mandate - as buyers from all over came to source makers of products from socks and shoes to yarns and all types of clothing including the spectacular Harris Tweed and classic wool fabrics by Moon. Showing the scope of wool potential is all part of the role of British Wool, so we took great pride in showcasing flooring, furnishing, accessories and art all displayed under the tongue in cheek title of ‘The Sheepish Studio’. During the Seminars, our panel of speakers united to discuss The Wonders of Wool Textiles Made in Britain’. It was agreed by the panel, which included Lorna Haigh of Alternative Flooring, Alan Thornber of Laxtons Yarns and Eifion and Amanda Griffiths of Melin Tregwynt - fabric manufacturers in Wales that there was a growing appetite for provenance and craft stories in products and that the UK based textile industry had much to offer on this. Social media is playing an important part in their businesses and they all agreed that it was becoming ever more important in terms of marketing. Brexit was not particularly an issue at this time according to the panellists. It was all interesting comment and the audience had plenty of questions to ask including the query about selling a tactile product online - and it was generally accepted that wool is a fibre that ideally needs to be touched by the consumer, as that simple action helps the consumer to understand the quality of the product. A week later, we found ourselves at the Greendale Buying Group Show set in the truly superb Mercedes Benz World in Weybridge. Quality wool carpet was surrounded by impressive wheels of the very finest kind! Visitors called by to discuss ways they could join in with WoolRetailer.com. Many of these retailers are passionate about wool and it was great to have the opportunity to meet them face-to-face and learn more about their experience of selling wool carpet every day and to see how we can support them in-store.

British Wool Carpet of the Month The Watercolours Collection from Ulster Carpets is inspired by natural landscapes and the abstract work of the famed painter JMW Turner. The range is perfect for areas where pattern does not need to be dominant and the moody subtlety of the tones will allow the easy matching of fabrics and soft furnishings. The two designs - Amulet and Mineral are available in five stunning colour ways which evoke the natural elements with whimsical brush strokes. Made from 80% wool and 20% nylon, the range is suitable for extra heavy wear usage and is available in five colour matching multi-widths making it suitable for both small and large family spaces.
And Why We Like It… There is something soothing about the designs and colours in this clever collection. The distinct art of the weave replicating the brushstrokes inspired by none other than the watercolour maestro, JMW Turner himself, will add real beauty to the floor. Nature is always the most impressive of colour banks and these shades create a truly magnificent mood-board for the home decorator. All of this and of course the undisputed comfort and longevity of Ulster Carpets make this a fitting masterpiece and one which we would happily add to our gallery!

Flower on Flooring It pays to keep flooring installations in trim Paying attention to detail in all aspects of every flooring installation will provide the very best results, so the topic of trims, profiles and accessories is an essential one for providing the best finishing touch for each project.
Ensuring that the most suitable and best quality items have been selected will provide the finishing touch to ensure that the customer's new floor will retain its professional and stylish appearance for many years to come.
The Stocklists asked some of the UK’s leading suppliers to provide examples of their latest introductions of trims, profiles and accessories.
Ball and Young, one of the UK's main manufacturers, was the first to respond and states that it has been producing high quality metal edgings for over 20 years, delivering consistent colour in both silver and simbrass.
“With precision engineering, the profiles give an extremely handsome finish to any installation, not just used in flooring they also adorn many kitchen worktops in stylish homes,” says sales and marketing director Ann Shaw.
“We are extremely excited with our new SD (Stick Down) range with first class elegance and style. Our Metal Department, led by Denise, takes great pride in offering a customer service second to none and it is all proudly made in Corby, Northamptonshire,” says Ms Shaw.
Interfloor states that with Britain’s artificial turf market booming, it has introduced a long-lasting weatherproof fitting range for artificial grass joint seaming to its portfolio of almost 1,000 flooring accessory products.
The new range includes everything professional installers and DIY consumers need to achieve a high quality finish on artificial lawns and is suitable for both exterior and interior use.
Gripperrods Artificial Grass Jointing Tape, specially constructed for use with Greenbond Artificial Grass Adhesive, is made from a strong rot-proof bonding material with a sealed back to prevent the adhesive penetrating to the base. The quick-curing adhesive is weather and water proof and solvent-free with a high bonding strength.
Interfloor’s new Gripperrods Artificial Grass Fitting Range
Completing the range is Half-Green U-Pins, perfect for securing artificial lawns and weed control fabrics. Made from galvanised steel, the 16cm long u-pins are coloured half green to help blend with the grass, Interfloor concludes.

SHOW REVIEW PART 2
Our second look at the launches, trends and innovations at the agenda-setting Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show in Solihull.
“This is the best opportunity of the year for retailers to see right across the industry in one go with everything that’s latest and greatest.”
Professional – and no bull! Stairrods Stairrods was attracting attention for its latest initiative in solving problems with LVT installations. The company came back to Solihull after a five-year absence with an eye-catching mini-display unit that shows exactly how Stairrods profiles can cope with differing heights of vinyl on stairs. The Full-Bull and No-Bull nosing profiles give attractive options in all the fashionable Stairrods finishes to cope with 2.5mm, 3mm, 4mm and 5mm thicknesses. “We have had a lot of interest in this area of installation which can be a headache for fitters,” says Keith Vowles. “The new profiles aren’t just problem solvers, they make the installation look very professional.” T 01207 591176 www.stairrods.co.uk
Loving that lasts! SEBO It is nice to be in a loving relationship – especially when you’ve been together for as many years as SEBO and the carpet industry! “Everyone we have seen on the stand today has told us that they have had our products for years and they’re still going strong,” says Kevin Hockney of SEBO. “That track record has built incredible loyalty and trust in the brand.” SEBO is widely endorsed by the industry and the love lasts because SEBO machines last. They are often still working 15 years or more after their purchase while the average age of the mainstream consumer brands can be as little as just four years! The company runs a popular scheme for retailers which means the store only has to buy a demonstration machine and then SEBO fulfills the orders direct to consumers on behalf of the retailer. Fashion parade Hugh Mackay Hugh Mackay are really flying at present with the sort of fashionable new ranges that retailers can really work with to motivate top quality sales. The first of the highlights was the Deco Collection, the company’s flagship wool loop collection which has been enhanced with the striking new Deco Zig-Zag range and fresh new colours in Deco Stripe. The Collection now adds up to 40 coordinated options with 19 plains. The second highlight was the launch of what turned out to be one of the best new patterns seen at the event. Moda is an 80/20 in British Wool woven on eight-row axminster looms at Hugh Mackay. Small, classy patterns in geometrics, herringbone and dogs-tooth across 20 options distinguish this range. “We’ve never really had a range like this before and we’ve really enjoyed developing something a bit different and it has created a lot of interest already,” said Vince Holden of Hugh Mackay (pictured left). Stress free star is born Thomas Witter The Solihull show was an important premier for Thomas Witter’s latest star, the Stress Free range – the company’s first foray into bleach cleanable polypropylene carpets. “We’ve take the leap in synthetic carpets and made sure we have done it in style,” says Witter’s Steve Byrne (pictured right). Fresh branding across a range of bleach cleanable saxonies, heathers and twists is the hallmark of the new collection which is supported by modern, family-friendly point-of-sale. New Accolade lived up to its name at the event, winning praise from retailers after this popular country-style berber twist was re-engineered and re-coloured for 2017. An eight-gauge 80/20 twist with 5% PE meltbond, this range now offers 20 colours in two weights. “It was ready for a refresh and we’ve been delighted with the reaction from retailers,” says Steve. “This is the sort of range that everyone should have as a core offer.” T 01429 892 555 www.whitestone.co.uk

Inspirational consultation Crucial Trading We’ve been eagerly awaiting the launch of Crucial’s ultra-sophisticated mini consultation table – possibly the smartest piece of point-of-sale in the flooring industry. The consultation concept was launched with a much larger unit two years ago for a few flagship stores. Now many more retailers can consider investing in this approach with a more compact table which is no less packed with inspiration. Each table can be tailor-made with sampling suitable for the individual retailer and his customers. The table top and six drawers can be used sequentially to discuss the texture, the design, the colour and so on. “We want retailers to be able to invest time with customers and make the experience as engaging as possible,” says Emma Hopkins of Crucial. Superb matching wall displays and a smart free-standing rug display system adds to the studio feel of the sales presentation. Resurgence of colour Penthouse Carpets “We are seeing a resurgence of colour,” says Jonathan Gamble at Penthouse Carpets. And there were cheerful-looking wall racks to prove it! “While we’re adding new greys of course we are also seeing strong demand for greens, blues and terracotta reds so we are working right across the product portfolio to give the best possible colour options for consumers,” he said. Many examples were already on show at the BGNFS with six colours changed in Super Maxim and both Quartz and Season extend their options by two colours. “It makes the display’s look more interesting for sure, “ says Jonathan, “but the sales figures look even more interesting!” T 01706 341231 www.penthousecarpets.co.uk

Style setters Asiatic Asiatic’s Katherine Carnaby brand has been setting the style agenda for designery rugs and the sophisticated range of options has grown into a compelling collection. The company has brought all this together in a distinctive new display box for the key ranges with mini samples which retailers can use to show some of the highlights available. The popular Chrome range has added new colours to its sheeny palette but most eye-catching is Asiatic’s cut and loop pile with a viscose pile called Eaton. “The combination of the two looks absolutely stunning,” says Asiatic’s Neil Farrell. “This range has taken a little while to develop but now it is really hitting the spot as something special.” T 020 8800 2000 www.asiatic.co.uk

Ultimately sensuous Whitestone Weavers The launch of Whitestone’s Hassle Free Sensuous two years ago turned out to be a major event in the market, creating one of the best selling saxonies in the UK – and it’s British-made with a lifetime stain guarantee. “The popularity has grown and grown,” says Vince Holden. “The performance is great and we have found that once retailers have used it once, they come back for more because it is so reliable.” So playing to that strength and broadening the appeal, Whitestone has now brought in two new options in the collection with a heavier weight Hassle Free Ultimate and a lighter weight Ultimate Classic, both in 16 stylish colours. Expertise and opportunity British Wool British Wool are steadily building their base of users registered with woolretailer.com, a programme to accredit savvy retailers as experts once they have completed a detailed online course about wool characteristics, performance and benefits. “We have built in more elements that the retailers really want and we have had very positive feedback,” says Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool. “The online programme is detailed but people are finding it engaging and interesting and the system is set up so that you can work through it in stages – so a week of well-used coffee breaks can complete the course!” woolretailer.com equips retailers to tell the wool story with authority to their customers and look for opportunities for better quality sales. Their accreditation is supported by in-store branding to promote their expertise. T 01274 688666 www.britishwool.org.uk Graham Clark is the new man at the top of marketing for British Wool and arrived at the group last month so the Solhull show was an excellent opportunity to start getting to know the trade. Caribbean colour Manx Manx Tomkinson featured their new wall units, which can accommodate four wall cassettes, with accompanying lectern sets and swatches. They also launched the new point of sale material for the Easy Living PP collection. Featuring a new colourful logo on a bright yellow background, this is aimed to stand out in retail premises, whilst at the same time focus on the key attributes of polypropylene as a fibre in carpet production. The four new ranges launched as part of the Easy Living collection have a Caribbean theme to them - Bermuda, Jamaica, Grenada and Tortuga. The ranges are presented on a new lectern display which shows samples of every colour, with a swatch of each stored on a shelf underneath. T 01827 831434

Display the difference Distinctive Flooring Distinctive Flooring want you to notice that their LVT is a little more special than most so they’ve decided that state-of-the-art display is the way to do it. They’ve just launched their premium swing arm wall display units in smart, modern black metal with large graphic areas and a tekkie LED lighting system above and below the large samples, designed to shown off their finish and texture to maximum effect. “We’re really raising the game with this approach,” says Jay Taylor. Currently there are two units each holding 32 samples – one for click and dry-back and the other for dry-back ranges only. And to make sure the products justify their new showcase, Distinctive has also just launched its latest range Timeless Collection with eight tiles and seven wood décor 48” planks – all with heavily textured effects for ultimate authenticity. The polish concrete tiles are especially eye-catching. T 01274 655694 www.distinctiveflooring.co.uk
Committed to colour Adam Carpets Adam’s new association with posh paint company Little Greene was the centerpiece of their stand at Solihull with roomsets coordinating wall colours with Adam’s Castlemead Twist and Fine Worcester Twist. The move is a major coup for Adam Carpets for whom colour is central to their creativity and there will be a full launch of the concept at The Flooring Show in Harrogate in September. Demonstrating the company’s commitment to colour, the company launched two new moodboards at the show – Greenhouse Fresh with ontrend citrus colours, greens and sunny yellows combined with deeper greys and blues; and New Vintage, a cosy collection of burnt orange, reds and taupes. The collection of Adam’s mood-boards is growing and the latest ones are eagerly anticipated by many retailers who use them in-store as point-of-sale to give an interior design flavor to their displays. “The mood-boards allow us to show more than colours and explore trends in depth,” says Adam’s MD Eamonn Prescott. The London loops Gaskell Wool Rich Gaskell Wool Rich exhibited ten new ranges in total, all different styles of wool loop pile carpet. Maintaining the London theme, these all have names that link to the capital Abbey Road, Holland Park, Finchley, and so on. To help with the presentation of these products, they launched a new rotating stand which can accommodate 12 ranges in total, with a very small footprint of just 60cms in diameter. Over 400 of these stands will be merchandised in the coming few weeks. The focus of the stand was to promote Gaskell as the market specialist for wool loop pile carpets: this obviously worked, as it received the award for Best Stand in Show! T 01827 831525

Beyond the deal Associated Carpet Group ACG is one of the most successful buying groups in UK flooring with the fastest growing membership – now approaching 300 stores. Its achievement is based on a relentless focus on driving better business for independent retailers. “Our role is to break down the barriers to getting the best possible, competitive price and make retailers more profitable,” says ACG’s Richard Moore. “But we go beyond the usual deal to make sure that there’s a partnership between our members and the manufacturers that delivers the right product mix and a full package of point-of-sale and merchandising to back it up. “To be really successful, a business has got to get everything right at the same time and that’s where we can help, joining all the dots and taking a lot of the risk away from retailers,” says Richard. “While retailers can ensure they retain their independence, the support of the group is a very powerful force for profit.” ACG is just about to launch a comprehensive new marketing service to help members promote their store with design makeovers, signage, POS, advertising and internet promotion…. More will be revealed at Harrogate! T 01942 825520 www.acgcarpets.com
Cloud with silver lining MasterPiece It’s a year since Masterpiece introduced their cloud-based software for fully mobile measuring and planning and they’ve been busy ever since so now the system has a full suite of features for costing the job with estimates and invoicing. “We are also supporting the retail stores as well as the estimator so that they can work together seamlessly,” says Charles Pearson. “The job can be created in store and then the baton is passed to the estimator’s to gather all the data and plan on site with his mobile device and then he passes responsibility back to the store as soon as he has finished. This approach is working very well across the business for our users.” Masterpiece has also launched a cloud version of their Insurance product, a specialised system that can compare hundreds of flooring products for an accurate assessment of like-for-like settlements or betterments when a consumer wants to trade up. Distinction and Definition Cavalier Carpets
Cavalier can be relied on for a constant flow of new sales initiatives that keep the market on its toes and looking forward to what’s next. For those who didn’t see them at the Chelsea show, the roll out of the company’s sophisticated new eighth-gauge twist Cosmopolitan in 24 colours and the newly extended popular Pennine Heathers range were reasons to visit. But Cavalier added in extra launches in their Stain-less Collection with the arrival of Titan – the heaviest carpet Cavalier has ever created – as a sister product to the highly successful soft-touch Serenity PP carpet – and the new finely-finished tenth gauge Definition range. The flagship of this collection, Distinctions, also added five new colours including the latest greys. Cavalier are also doing really well with Country Collection, their popular berber 80/20 berber twist and have given the range another boost with four new colours. The company’s smart metal wall racks have always been a market leader for style and now there is a clever lectern to match which the company is calling a ‘Selectern’ as it can offer up to four choices. Child’s play Cloud 9 Selling Cloud 9 is child’s play now with the launch of “carpet underlay for the love of your life.” Children’s Cushion is the latest niche range in the Cloud 9 collection, specially designed to soften the patter of tiny feet and create a safe, comfortable environment for the younger members of the family. It also benefits from Ultra-Fresh, Cloud 9’s hygienic, anti-allergenic treatment. Friendly branding and strong lifestyle photography is supporting the launch of the new product and Ann Shaw of Ball & Young wants retailers to push the possibilities further. “We’re encouraging stores to present a simple roomset display for a child’s bedroom or playroom with teddies and toys. It is easy to create this type of environment and parents will immediately relate to the theme. It’s just another way to make consumers think underlay and add it to their carpet purchase, “ she said. Louis de Poortere - Atlantic Surf, Grey Waves
“We’re delighted by the reaction that our second TrendEdit portfolio has received from retailers and consumers alike,” explains Gareth Davies, Sales & Marketing Director, Flair Rugs. “It is all the more pleasing as there’s a huge amount of work that takes place behind the scenes to produce each TrendEdit portfolio, with our designers spending days, weeks and months bringing together their latest trend predictions for the season ahead. Therefore, to see it enjoy such a positive reaction in the market place is fantastic.”
The two designs within the new Atlantic Collection bear all the hallmarks of a Louis De Poortere rug; exceptional attention-to-detail, vibrant on-trend colours and breath-taking design, all packaged into what is sure to be another high-street success for the Belgium-based manufacturer.
This season, TrendEdit welcomed new lines including Persian Fusion, Cairo, Eclectic and Palais. Whether it is beautifully hand carved wool/viscose designs, high sheen 100% viscose silks, or flatweaves, this latest collection takes us on a journey to all four corners of the globe.
Boasting over a century of skill and craftsmanship in the production of the brand’s woven creations, the Atlantic Collection brings a fresh and contemporary twist to the Louis portfolio. Each of the two designs, Ocean and Surf, are interpretations of works by artist Marie Bathellier, whose artwork was inspired by her time living on the Isle of Yeu, off the Atlantic coast of France. Surf, sand and driftwood were the inspiration for her work, and the results have translated perfectly into two new rug designs. Multiple layers of texture, distressed areas and intricate stitching detail culminate in a true “vintage” look with a modern twist.
Following the success of its launch, Flair Rugs TrendEdit2 for the SS17 season builds on the Flair Rugs - Auckland Grey momentum of the TrendEdit concept. A huge hit since its inception, it incorporates Flair’s most exclusive on-trend designs at its heart. Flooring factsheet from Interfloor Specialist underlays – wood & laminate flooring Interfloor’s British manufactured specialist underlays for wood and laminate flooring offer some of the best noise reducing performance in the industry. The Duralay Timbermate range includes the best-selling sponge rubber brands Timbermate Excel and Silentfloor Gold, a premium underlay with an impressive 53 SONE rating, plus the hardwearing Duratex.
Tests show in-room acoustics can worsen if inferior or lightweight underlays are used with hard flooring; putting a lightweight, air filled, cellular product under wood or laminate creates an echo chamber and more noise, whether it’s generated by scraping furniture, heavy footsteps or reverberation. While many products on the market claim to be acoustic underlays, their impact test results just don’t compare to the low noise levels of Timbermate underlays which reduce in-room noise by up to 30 per cent. Independent tests prove the Timbermate products, with their superior weight and density, significantly reduce acoustic noise levels and all have achieved low SONE ratings. Timbermate Excel is a 3.60mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay; while the top end Silentfloor Gold is a 4.20mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay. Both underlays feature Interfloor’s VapourStop membrane, which helps prevent moisture, and branded backing to help differentiate them from inferior copycat products. For installations where moisture is not an issue, Duratex is a heavy-duty 3.60mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay that offers great performance and excellent value. Manufactured at Interfloor’s Haslingden site, the three products in the Timbermate range are rated highly in the LEED programme. The underlays are fully recyclable at the end of their life; contain not less than three percent pre-consumer recycled material and 5 LEED points are available if used within 500 miles from the point of production. They also meet or exceed the industry standard for indoor air quality as established by the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label programme. And for the perfect finishing touch, Interfloor’s accessories include Stikatak edgings to suit all types of floor, including the 9mm Zig Zag which gives a neat transition between laminate/hard flooring and adjacent stretch carpet installation. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Crumb
Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
PU foam
Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com
Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).
Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 60
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 62
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich
britishwool.org.uk campaignforwool.org THE STOCKLISTS July 2017
Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 63
