Carpet&FlooringReview Baby steps Two decorative floor designs, from Harvey Maria’s collection, have joined the interior scheme at JoJo Maman Bébé’s new store in Amersham. The Harvey Maria specification is the latest in a series of 25 installations for the home-grown maternity wear and baby-clothing retailer – with stores throughout the UK and a further four stores recently opened in the US. Featured designs include Lattice Cornflower Blue - by Dee Hardwicke – and Little Bricks Forget-Me-Not, used to create runnerstyle floor areas at the stores’ till points and within changing rooms. “Harvey Maria’s floor designs have given a real lift to our stores and we’ve had lots of positive feedback. It’s a careful balance to create a fresh interior scheme – without it being too clinical,” explained Louise Jones, Property & Project Manager at JoJo Maman Bébé. Founded in 1993 by Laura Tenison, JoJo Maman Bébé now has 93 stores throughout the UK, with a further four stores in the US. From small beginnings, the brand has established itself as “the UK’s favourite mother and baby brand,” winning numerous awards - including an MBE for Laura for services to business. Louise discovered Harvey Maria in early 2017, whilst working on a store design for a new outlet on Chiswick High Street; she was keen to add more interest and dimension to floor areas, without detracting from the interior design – and the colours needed to complement the brand’s powder blue and white colour scheme to maintain a light and airy feel. Customer safety, durability and easy maintenance were also key considerations. Working with Harvey Maria’s Designer, Andrew Smith, Laura and Louise chose Cornflower Blue Lattice, with its hand-painted style petal motif, and complementary Forget-Me-Not toned Little Bricks – a shortstave bevelled LVT. Following the initial installation at Chiswick, the Harvey Maria feature floor design has been recreated in all new JoJo Maman Bébé stores, and within existing store refurbishments. The invincible team at AW! Pictured in front of the impressive Invictus LVT POS display are (l to r): Emmanuel Lioen, Jonathan Davies and Gavin Pugh.
Invictus challenges LVT market In a major development in the flooring market, Invictus has staked its claim to become a leading UK luxury vinyl tile brand, building on the huge success of the carpet collection that Associated Weavers quickly developed into one of the country’s favourite flooring choices. The debut of Associated Weavers into the luxury vinyl tile market was marked by a showcase launch event to retailers and buying groups at the company’s HQ in Halifax in June which set a high bar in the competitive LVT sector with impressive marketing presentation and distinctive products. Invictus was launched as a new-generation polypropylene carpet range in 2015 in a brand-led strategy that transformed the soft sector. “Invictus carpet became a best-seller overnight for retailers so the brand was an obvious choice to drive the new LVT business with the same standards of comfort and performance,” said Gavin Pugh, UK managing director. “We are very serious about this business and the response from retailers has been so positive. They are keen to be part of a new success story.” Invictus LVT comes to market with 84 options in the dry-back Optimus range with a 0.3 wear layer and Maximus range with a 0.55 wear layer which is offered in dry-back and click. A well balanced portfolio of highly authentic decors in wood, stone and parquet is enhanced with some exclusive designs including the modern Designer Parquet, Belgium Blue stone, Concrete Crush, a natural Tropical Forest décor and a distinctive Victorian Treasure pattern. But in true AW style, it is the quality of the marketing support that sets Invictus LVT apart with a class-leading in-store presentation, state-of-the-art interactive POS and web tools and unprecedented level of attention to internet and social media marketing. “There is major focus on the online support – we guarantee we will bring more people to your store,” said Emmanuel Lioen, marketing and corporate communications manager. Invictus LVT is in stock now and ready to roll out this summer. There will be a full report in The Stocklists in our August issue. T 01422 431100 www.invictus.co.uk

NEWS Quiet care SiMBA, the charity supporting families who have suffered the loss of a baby, has opened a new Family Room and Quiet Room at the Royal Alexandra maternity hospital in Paisley. The rooms are for families experiencing the tragedy of losing a baby. The project was able to go ahead after locally bereaved families fundraised over £30,000 to support the SiMBA charity project. As part of the project, Altro donated Altro Wood Safety Comfort flooring for the family and quiet rooms, and Altro Pisces flooring for the en-suite bathroom. The family room provides an area for parents who are experiencing bereavement to stay from induction to delivery and for postnatal care so they can spend precious time with their baby. The quiet room, specifically designed for families returning to the hospital to spend time with their baby or see their babies name in the book of remembrance; it can also be a space for family members while visiting, to have a space out of the family room or to have some time alone. Victoria Boulton, lead designer with Grosvenor Interiors which works closely with SiMBA, said: “We chose Altro Pisces in Beach Hut for the en-suite as it has soft lilac tones that work well with the wall graphics. Also the shod/barefoot coverage and the homely look of the product is a big plus.” Altro Wood Safety Comfort offers aesthetics combined with comfort. It’s an ideal choice for areas that need to look good while helping to give comfort underfoot. This 2.85mm thick option offers 14dB sound reduction. T 01462 489516

Using a patented L2C click joint, VIVO Click Vinyl Collection delivers fast and reliable installation, with each wood plank or stone tile featuring a textured surface for added realism. Drawing on parent company, IVC Group’s manufacturing power, the VIVO Click Vinyl Collection delivers great value and represents a natural synergy for the brand: “As part of Europe’s largest manufacturer of cushion vinyl, LVT and carpet tiles, Leoline has unique access to shared knowledge and technical know-how on complementing products,” explains Maaike Dickx, product manager, Leoline. “Made side-by-side with LVT floors, Leoline also shares a similar multi-layer construction, making the introduction of our very-own LVT a natural progression. We’re delighted to be able to make VIVO Click Vinyl Collection and the brand-new Ceramica and Timberline ranges available to Ireland, as we look to make style easy for homeowners across the country.” T 0800 032 3970

Healthy, happy Hannover The keynote theme for the 2020 edition of Domotex, the world’s leading trade show for carpets and floor coverings, is “Atmysphere”. The show, which runs from 10 to 13 January, 2020, in Hannover, Germany, will thus have as its central focus all those qualities of floors and floor coverings that contribute to wellbeing and accentuate naturalness and sustainability.
Harvey Maria backs LVT fitters Harvey Maria has signed-up as an industry sponsor of the ‘LVT European Fitter of the Year 2019’. The brand new initiative, hosted jointly by FloorSkills and Woontotaal Training Academy (Netherlands), looks to recognise the skills of LVT fitters across the UK and Europe. It will culminate in a two-day Grand Final and Open Day on 11-12 July at the FloorSkills’ training centre, in the West Midlands. “The fitting of vinyl tile flooring has always been a specialist skill – and this has become more apparent with the growth in designer patterns, like those offered throughout our own range. We’re delighted to be part of this exciting new initiative, which celebrates our industry and the art of installation,” commented Harvey Maria’s Founder, Mark Findlay.
Health and wellness are a major social trend at present, and for many people that means spending plenty of their leisure time outdoors in natural settings. On sunny days, patios, decks, balconies and gardens double as lovingly designed, lifestyle enhancing outdoor extensions of indoor living spaces. It is with these trends firmly in mind that the companies exhibiting at Domotex are increasingly developing highquality flooring made of natural wood, innovative planks made of WPC, and tiles that are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The sheer range of the products available provides a richly diverse and creative design palette for home owners and contract flooring professionals.
Following stage one qualification and semi-final heats, eight fitters will be selected to attend the Grand Final in July. All finalists will be required to install a 6mm plywood subfloor and skim coat. LVT design flooring, including decors from Harvey Maria, will then be provided and finalists will be given the opportunity to showcase their skills. The final will coincide with the FloorSkills open day on 12 July - and everyone attending will be eligible to vote for the winner. At the event, Harvey Maria will also present new designs, including its new ultra-authentic wood range – the MSeries.
Architects and interior designers use the products showcased by exhibitors at Domotex to create fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. By connecting otherwise disparate functional areas, these products create unique spaces that contribute directly to the wellbeing of the people who live and work in them.

NEWS Long life of Riley Riley Register has appointed Grosvenor Wilton to reproduce the original specification Wilton carpet to restore its car interiors. Founded in 1954, the Riley Register aims to keep prewar Riley’s on the road and maintained in as near original condition as possible. Grosvenor Wilton was found to be the last UK based Wilton weaver who could reproduce the carpet used in the early 1900 Riley’s. Grosvenor Wilton has created a cut pile Wilton using a 2 coloured stipple yarn. The current offering includes red/black stipple carpet with blue/black and green/black options to follow. The partnership between the two brands has meant that members of the Riley Register can restore their interiors to the original design and look. Riley Register at Grosvenor Wilton’s Kidderminster Factory. Charles Annable, Grosvenor Wilton Managing Director comments; ‘We are thrilled to be partnering with the Riley Register on this project. Our reproduction is very close to the original carpet interms of quality and colour, we have been given original car carpets to match to which are over 80 years old. We found some old car carpets that had little exposure to sunlight and it was surprising how bright the colours are.’ With a distinguished history spanning over 200 years, Grosvenor Wilton is one of the UK’s oldest independent carpet manufacturers. NEWS All our yesterdays Report and photo by Bernard Harding (retired Hugh Mackay representative). While the country at large were busy tapping their fingers to “Downtown,” “Stairways to Heaven” or John Lennon “Imagine” In the West Country twice a year Cyril (Stan) Stanton from Bondworth Carpets and Colin Shaw from Brockway Carpets were always busy ensuring that the South West Carpet Exhibition known as the Plymouth Carpet Fair ran according to plan in both the Spring and Autumn. Principally held in the prestigious Plymouth Guildhall (with hanging chandeliers and walls lined oak panelling”) essentially the whole exhibition was organised and to a very large extent run by all the regional representatives employed in the carpet trade. From the lunch time onwards on the Monday the Guildhall car parks and all the surrounding side streets saw a frenzy of activity as cars vans and lorries all jockeyed for position for each and every manufacturer’s stand to be laid out all bristol fashion in time for the Grand Opening on the Tuesday morning. All stands complete, in keeping with the time honoured “friendly trade” tradition, each representative coughed up 10/- (50p in today’s money) which paid for sandwiches and beer at the local “Valiant Soldier” pub and an excellent opportunity to catch-up with colleagues and friends in the trade. On the Tuesday morning all the reps and a few early customers would gather around the Guildhall “Bar” area when a toast was proposed by an invited guest and everyone responded raising their glass of sherry.
Making their mark With over 500 Master Installers covering the entire country, the Academy continues to make its mark in the training world, delivering improved product knowledge and expertise in wood, laminate and luxury vinyl tile installation to a wide choice of flooring enthusiasts.
The Plymouth carpet fair 1970-1975 With 70 plus bodies all positioned on the staircase and landing, triggering the “self timer” on the camera was a odds-on favourite to guarantee smiles all round (see above). Developing the film after dark in the hotel bedroom and producing a 10” x 8” print meant that all those present could order a copy if they so wished. By and large the main hall and the surrounding adjoining areas (on the same floor) was occupied by axminster and wilton manufacturer’s, the one exception being Roberts Smoothedge (as they were happy to take the raised stage area) Other halls in the Guildhall and indeed rooms at the nearby Holiday Inn Hotel were the preserves of the ever growing tufted manufactures. Back then a typical retailer could offer his customer: • Tufted carpet for £3 per square yard • 7 row axminster for £4 per square yard • 9 row axminster for £5 per square yard Today of course it has all changed, with vast strides made in tufted manufacturing, and total differences in interior expectations and requirements. While it is a sad fact that a number of the trade’s personalities (in the photograph) are no longer with us, many are, and a select few are still very active each and everyday.

Marketing insights Design Inspiration It’s been fascinating to discover how design inspiration can come from so many sources; whether it’s a cherished archive, a love of nature, the latest fashion trend or sparked by a collaboration with like-minded people. Leading luxury vinyl flooring manufacturer, Karndean Designflooring, is recognised for its authentic wood, stone and abstract designs. Stella Coyle, National Retail Sales Manager describes their inspiration, “Our designs are influenced by expressive and intriguing forms selected by our in-house design team from the natural world. From the ancient forests of Europe, to the remote Australian outback and beyond, we travel the world in our quest to bring to life exceptional floors that inspire and delight. By combining these original features with cutting edge design and craftsmanship, we create simply beautiful floors that homeowners will love for a lifetime.”

collection has been awarded a prestigious Design Guild Mark 2019 in recognition of British design excellence and innovation. This is the first time that famous Liberty prints have been given a new visualisation as carpet, expertly woven by Alternative Flooring. Lorna Haigh, Creative and Marketing Director commented, “The prestige of winning this coveted design award is a reflection of the renaissance and recognition of the wonderful craft of wool carpet weaving. I am delighted how this story is interwoven with iconic Liberty Fabrics patterns. Design is at the very heart of Alternative Flooring. We wanted to bring original pattern to collections and decided to work with new designers, crafts people and heritage brands with fabulous archives. We now weave imaginative floor stories, which are British through and through. Liberty’s most desirable prints Strawberry Meadow, Capello Shell, Felix Raison and Flowers of Thorpe are reimagined from fabric to floor. Receiving the Design Guild Mark is a true statement of the bold, creative vision which Alternative strives for.” Judges included Daniel Hopwood, Director of Daniel Hopwood London Interior Design & Architecture, who commented, “We all know that lovely quote by William Morris ‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.’ In the light of this modern age may I add to the quote ‘and definitely sustainable’ as all of the products that have been awarded the prestigious Design Guild Mark meet all three of those criteria.”

“By combining original features with cutting edge design and craftsmanship, we create simply beautiful floors that homeowners will love for a lifetime.” Influenced at the same time by interior trends such as parquet, monochrome and au naturel, Karndean Designflooring challenge what’s possible by creating geometric shapes and patterns in luxury vinyl tiles. A recent example of this is their Heritage and new Kaleidoscope designs. The Kaleidoscope collection recently welcomed two new eye-catching tiles, inspired by traditional Moroccan and medieval Spanish architecture. Stella adds, “Inspired by architectural tiled floors of grand Victorian and Regency villas and townhouses, Heritage offers the opulent look of classic geometric tiles. From striking monochrome designs to beautifully blended traditional patterns, the collection reflects both the classic elegance of historic homes and the boldness of contemporary trends.” As more and more home decorators are looking to add their own style to their floor design, Karndean Designflooring has introduced design strips to help savvy home decorators create their unique floor by using borders and rug effects to define key areas.
Good flooring design is not just about pattern, it’s about colour and texture too. Adam Carpets design expertise in developing consistently good colour palettes is second to none. Their collaboration with Little Greene Paint Company comes at a time when consumers are more confident and seek colour inspiration for their whole home, which includes walls, furniture and flooring.

and neutrals really matter. With over 20 greys across their plain collections, we cannot underestimate the skill in developing layered undertones of colour to ensure consumers can find the perfect grey for their interior. With greys becoming warmer, Adam Carpets also predict the return to beiges, but not as we remember them. New beiges are less yellow as inspiration comes from tones of oatmeal, stone, washed linen, earthy jutes, wool and canvas. This commitment to colour development underpins the collaboration between Adam Carpets and Little Greene – companies which care about colour provenance and high-quality British manufacturing. All Adam Carpets plain and patterned collections are available in 4m and 5m widths and made in their own modern factory in Kidderminster. Harvey Maria’s new Organics Design Collection combines a mellow stoneeffect with a square-in-a-square motif. The collection includes eight individual LVT’s from a palette of four shades. Each design uses a seamless shadow detail, which creates a stunning visual contrast between the tile’s inner square and edge. Organics Design replicates the clean, neutral palette from Harvey Maria’s Organics Stone range – Natural, Portland, Jurassic and Cambrian. Four designs have a dark inner square and a light border, and four have a light inner square and dark border. Laid alternately, the geometric design creates an almost 3D illusion, alternating from light to dark. When a single colour contrast is repeated, the tiles create a mini cube effect. Endless other designs can be created by mixing the plain and patterned tiles, and by combining them with single shade tiles from the Organics Stone range.

First Impressions really has made an impression that’ll last longer and what better way to showcase this than present the evidence of a Hexapod test on a new sloped graphic. Confident in their First Impressions range, the graphic shows stage by stage images of the durability of the carpet. Using the results of the test they can evaluate appearance retention and durability over a specified time period. The number of revolutions simulates the natural wear characteristics of the carpet, displaying its expected performance. Newly Installed versus 4,000 revolutions (approx. two years) versus 12,000 revolutions (approx. 5 years). The inspiration for this new colour palette came from the general trends within the domestic interiors market in the UK. With the latest introductions of bespoke greys and sophisticated beiges, they see a move towards bluer greys. Victoria Carpets new First Impressions is bang on trend in terms of colour, feel and construction. To top it all off, they provide a 15 Year Stain and Wear Warranty, meaning it truly is the most versatile choice for any home and any interior.

NEWS Global safety pioneer F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has become one of the first companies in the flooring industry to be awarded ISO 45001 certification, the new global standard for the management of workplace health and safety, following a successful audit of its management systems earlier in the year. ISO 45001 replaces BS OHSAS 18001 as the national standard for the management of occupational health and safety. It places greater emphasis on interaction between companies and the wider business environment, as well as on the role of top level leadership and management in ensuring the integration into business systems of practices and procedures to minimise risks to health in the workplace. It also stipulates greater consultation and participation of employees in these processes. UK companies are required to migrate to the new standard by March 2021, when the old one will be officially withdrawn. Commenting on the certification, F. Ball managing director Mark Hughes, said: “The health and safety of everyone who interacts with our business is of paramount importance to F. Ball, which is why we are so pleased our stringent practices and procedures for managing risks have been recognised with ISO 45001 accreditation two years before the official deadline for migration.” T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Lawton Yarns, the wool and synthetic fibre supplier to more than 50 carpet manufacturers, has been rescued from administration through its acquisition by Danspin A/S of Denmark. Lawtons were profitable but suffered from issues elsewhere within its previous parent company in The Netherlands. The move saves some 300 jobs at the Yorkshire-based business which was established in 1902. The British Retail Consortium blasted government policies after figures for the early Summer bank holiday season showed some record lows for the high street. According to the latest BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor for May 2019, total sales decreased by -2.7% in May, with likefor-like sales down by -3% year-on-year. Helen Dickinson, BRC Chief Executive, said: “With retail conditions the toughest they have been for a decade, politicians must act to support the successful reinvention of our high streets and local communities.” Retail footfall declined at its highest rate in six years in May – 3.5% down – with poor weather partly to blame but carpets fared reasonably well over the Easter holiday however, showing almost 2% growth over that period according to analysts. 44 July 2019
Axminster Carpets is enjoying a successful recovery since its refinancing in 2018 and expects to show double-digit sales growth over the last year. The Devon-based company was rescued from administration in 2013 and is now owned by Yorkshire-based wool house H Dawson. It secured £3.375 million of funding from Independent Growth Finance (IGF) last year and reports that its development strategy is going well and that revenues have outperformed internal forecasts. After 32 years’ service, senior industry leader Alexander Anton has retired from the board of Victoria plc. The Anton family has been a driving force within Victoria and Alexander is the great-grandson of one of the carpet maker’s founding partners and was a former chairman of the company. He played a key role in the boardroom machinations that disrupted the company in 2012, working with Geoff Wilding (now Victoria’s Executive Chairman) in a successful “shareholder rebellion.” Alexander commented: “My family and I are significant shareholders in Victoria and intend to remain so indefinitely. The Company is executing consistently on its proven strategy, which will continue to create wealth for its shareholders.” Carpet and rug imports have bounced back according to the Government’s HMRC with the latest figures release in June showing an 8.6% increase with Turkey, China and the Netherlands showing the greatest gains. The most recent export figures for carpets, for April 2019, are similarly bullish, claiming 18% to £24 million.

Flower on Flooring Making the best of a professional installation With flooring installations increasingly used to make interior design statements in both residential and commercial settings, the final piece of the puzzle is the use of the right trims, profiles and accessories to ensure the best final result is achieved. With the flooring sector benefiting from the services of a number of suppliers of high quality product, The Stocklists magazine looks at some of the highest quality options available.
Stairrods LVT nosing
Floorwise managing director Richard Bailey explains how the dominance of grey as the carpet colour of choice is impacting profile sales: “With grey carpet now replacing beige as the nation’s favourite colour, we’ve seen a move away from simbrass and aluminium to brushed steel nickel, with sales now overtaking these once ubiquitous finishes. The move towards brushed steel nickel is good news for retailers, as it commands a premium over standard simbrass and aluminium, and homeowners certainly seem willing to pay that. “Retailers can use this coordinated look to upsell from standard profiles through our Reflections range, which also includes a super-stylish true chrome plate finish. Providing a perfect match to interior fittings including lights, switches and electrical sockets, the popularity of Reflections demonstrates that homeowners are willing to invest in a more complete, first-class finish for their new carpet,” says Mr Bailey.

Stairrods reports that its new LVT Wrap Nosing allows the installer to use the LVT around the front of the nose to match the tread perfectly. The WPC Wrap Nosing is currently available for any 8mm and 6.5mm multilayered flooring and a mechanical fix is built into the design to lock the LVT/ WPC (top layer) in place. All products are matching with minimal SKUs and no alteration to the tread is needed. Stairrods says Ali Top Nose is in stock for 7-8mm for laminate to a carpeted stair and has also established a YouTube channel for installation guidelines. Stroolmount says: “You plan. You produce. You install. You make every detail perfect. Now you can protect you and your customers’ investment in flooring with cost-effective ideas.”

Quantum Flooring Solutions says it is constantly reviewing its product portfolio to create new designs or improve others where necessary, which has seen its range of transition profiles recently updated to reflect the nature of an ever-changing industry. The specification of dementia friendly flooring transition profiles has seen its Dementia Strips become an integral part of interior design considerations in care homes and places where people living with dementia may reside. Quantum’s main transition profiles for safe junctions between floor coverings are now known as TopClip – the evolution of a great design. The new range has four clip-in transition profiles that are easily fitted onto the company’s renowned base technology. The company also says its luxury vinyl tile (LVT) transition profiles are suitable for covering and protecting joins between floor coverings, or as transitions between two vinyl floor coverings or two different types of floor coverings, generally vinyl to carpet.

“Peace of mind protection pays dividends,” says Stroolmount’s Gill Finch. “We save the flooring industry thousands in costly repairs, replacements and insurance claims with simple protection solutions from just 1p.” The company offers a one-stop-solutions-shop for the following options: Furni-Glides: Award-winning self-adhesive or screw into very heavy furniture or recliners so they slide easily across carpet; Quickclick Glides: Multi-award-winning long-term solution. Its click-in interchangeble and replacement base glides help protect wood, laminate, vinyl, carpet and tiled floors; Self-adhesive Felts: Short-term, high quality, anti-scratch solution cushions floors for heavy furniture; Move-it Pads: Temporary solution so anyone can easily glide heavy furniture across hard floors. 46 July 2019

Impactful impressions Abingdon Flooring Alongside exciting new range launches (see last month’s issue - page 35), Abingdon used this year’s BGNFS to demonstrate its new ‘shop in shop’ concept designed to maximise the potential of its value-driven collections in StainFree, Love Story and Wilton Royal. The concession promises to deliver a unique shopping experience through a high-impact combination of wall units, lecterns, bold wall graphics and showroom carpet. Set to improve customer experience and engagement, the concept met with widespread approval, with the manufacturer explaining how it can be used to maximise ROI and boost sales of the manufacturer’s branded collections. “We used our attendance at the BGNFS to demonstrate how retailers can maximise the potential of our new retail concept no matter what the size of store,” comments Martin Peace, sales and marketing director, Abingdon Flooring. “From the bronze package that’s ideal for small stores, right up to the hugely impressive gold offer that includes ten wall units, six lecterns, two wall graphics and carpet for the floor. “The response we received at this year’s show tells us that we have the mix right and I look forward to seeing the concept out in the wilds, helping retailers to really take advantage of the great style and value that runs right throughout the Abingdon Carpets portfolio of brands.” T 01274 655662

Quality counts Carpenter Underlays Carpenter demonstrates that quality counts under the floor as much as on top with the growing success of their branded performance PU products at the higher end of the market. “There is an increasing trend for more discerning consumers to ask for a better product and they are less price sensitive provided the performance is clear,” says Peter Podesta of Carpenter (pictured with national sales manager Helen Rowberry). “This is a great opportunity for retailers.” The company’s luxury domestic underlays, including 9mm Richstep and 11mm Deepstep, are selling strongly and for those customers who really want the best, Carpenter offers Ultimate Living, a high density 10mm underlay that offers exceptional comfort and performance. Extrastep is a tough 6mm contract product but has also proven to be a popular and competitively-priced option in the UK domestic market for installations with underfloor heating. Eye-catching authenticity Karndean DesignFlooring In a competitive sector, you don’t get to be a market leader by chance and it is the attention to detail – and some bold creativity – that has set Karndean Designflooring apart as the pace-maker in LVT. The company’s design champion Jawad Ali says: “We are passionate about design and it is an interesting challenge to create the most authentic appearance, but with the difference that makes it distinctive.” Heritage Collection
A good example is the Heritage Collection which was previewed to great acclaim at the end of last year with its dramatic decors. “Heritage has generated enormous interest for its traditional Victorian and Regency townhouse designs but while we needed to be authentic to that concept, it was also important to appeal to people with more contemporary homes,” says Jawad So, for example, the designers have worked in subtle details such as solid contemporary colours like greys, taupes and laurel while the blacks are textured rather than solid to suit modern tastes. Heritage is available in 18 options with some clever configurations to work with and seamless border designs.
Kaleidoscope
We are passionate about design and it is an interesting challenge to create the most authentic appearance, but with the difference that makes it distinctive. In a similar concept, but utterly different, are the addition of two new eye catching designs to Karndean’s Kaleidoscope portfolio. Inspired by traditional Moorish and medieval Spanish architecture, these are quirky patchwork ceramic designs. Marrakesh deploys the style in natural, earthy mixed tones for a warm, homely look while Casablanca shows a monochrome take on the same design, using grey shades to contemporary effect. “These are ideal as accent floors for a fashionable home, making a bold statement in a simple style,” says Jawad. In its superb Art Select wood collection, Karndean continues to demonstrate that there is still scope for distinctive design and brought three decors to the show which attracted great interest.
Art Select
Highly unique are the new reclaimed hickory woods, inspired by the American Midwest, which play on the contrast between the dark ‘heartwood’ of the hickory plank against the lighter, brighter outer sapwood. The result is a fascinating combination of authentic tradition and a contemporary crafted appearance. With more transatlantic influence is the new American Chestnut with a rich, rustic appearance once common across the US from factories and barns. Contrasting light browns and dark chocolates together with a random plank option emphasises the reclaimed, salvage style of this design and gives a warm, solid feel. And finally, Karndean has been adding to its highly popular French Oak range in the Art Select Collection with an extended range of hues including gentle beige, cool grey and warm honey tones. Alongside the grand 56” x 9” planks, popular new parquet formats are available in 18” x 3” and 9” x 3”.
Kardean Designflooring were once again the proud recipents of the smooth flooring supplier of the year from the Flooring One buying group. Karndean’s Jamie Fixter is pictured receiving the award from Flooring One’s Peter Karra.

Carpet tiles are coming home Abingdon Carpet Tiles Carpet tiles have become a contemporary choice for modern homeowners alongside their established popularity in the commercial sector for their hard wearing, durable performance and contemporary clean lines. Abingdon’s growing carpet tile division now manufactures four ranges in the UK with the addition of its latest Infinite collection, so called because it is made from Econyl regenerated nylon which can be recycled an infinite number of times. The Econyl fibre uses rescued waste from industrial plastic, abundant fishing nets, fabric and carpets which would otherwise be dumped in landfill or the world’s oceans. Instead, it is turned into the Infinity premium product of 500mm square tiles and 1000 x 250mm planks that are available in 18 colours including coordinated stripes. “Carpet tiles are amazingly versatile and incredibly robust for high traffic areas both at home and at work and Abingdon now has a comprehensive range of stylish options to suit every requirement,” says sales director Martin Peace. In addition to the Infinite collection in Econyl, Abingdon offers two other ranges in nylon, Combination and Fusion, as well as an entry-level Unity in polypropylene. T 01274 655662

Pure and simple SMG SMG has been putting the finishing touches to their stylish new point-of-sale system which takes own label merchandising to a new level under the buying group’s “Pure” branding. A new corner unit has been added to the smart selection of “Pure Carpets” wall displays and lecterns. Also there is now a full LVT display system for click, dryback and tile options and a full underlay selection covering sponge, PU and LVT products. “We think we have created a really clean, contemporary look with lots of flexibility so that members can take as much or as little branded products as they wish,” says Linda Thomas of SMG (pictured right). SMG recognises the key importance of this approach, allowing their members to compete more effectively against price comparison and online buyers but it also gives them the opportunity to sell manufacturers ranges they might not otherwise have access to and to try out more niche collections or product categories without having to commit until they’re ready. Also on show was SMG’s new collection of undyed Astral wool carpets, a sector that is attracting an increasing amount of quality business in the market. T 0118 932 3832 50 July 2019

Painting the town Greene Adam Carpets Adam Carpets has seen the future and its green! – Little Greene, to be specific. The carpet company’s association with one of the U.K.’s most fashionable paint and wallpaper designers has finally come to fruition and raised the bar for flooring in the interiors sector. The two organisations have been working together closely for the last three years to create a portfolio of matching carpet palettes and paint finishes that sets a new standard for colour coordination.
“We have always had an interior boutique design led approach and the association with Little Greene is ideal for us to take this to the next level,” says managing director Chris Adam. “This is a great opportunity for boutique retailing that can offer a point of real difference. It is aspirational, but practical and can add real value to sales.”
Listening to retailers and getting their thoughts is the best way we know to make products that are going to be successful. The collaboration has resulted in in-store displays and an elegant catalogue that shows how colours from Adam’s Fine Worcester Twist and Castlemead Twist can be blended with Little Green products and swatches show pale, tonal and adventurous options across the range. Chris Adam says it was Little Greene’s attention to detail and their commitment to the independent retailer that set them apart as a partner for this venture which the company hopes will generate cross-selling opportunities for its customers. Also at the buying group show, Adam Carpets revealed a portfolio of development products that their designers are working on and were keen to take feedback from visitors which will help decide which go into commercial production later this year. “This is an exciting time for us and we have a lot going on, with plenty of variety within it,” says Chris. “Listening to retailers and getting their thoughts is the best way we know to make products that are going to be successful.” T 01562 829966 www.adamcarpets.co.uk from The Stocklists

Wish fulfilment Flooring One debuted its 2019 collection at BGNFS
The Flooring One exhibit at the Buying Groups National Flooring Show held in Solihull was once again a trade show that impressed with new ideas, products and POS. which comes in thirteen colours including opulent colours such as navy blue and cardinal red. Tufted on a 1/10th gauge machine, using 2-ply yarn, Velvet Wish gives the consumer the look and feel of a fine wool velvet carpet but not at the price associated with these luxury carpets and benefits from a life time stain warranty. Following the successful launch at the 2018 show, Flooring One introduced a further five patterned Wilton ranges, two entry level products, two modern patterned carpets with an emphasis on denim blue and a high quality tartan design. Flooring One also showcased 7 Rug suppliers with over 100 options on display which proved popular with members and covered modern, plain and traditional designs. Our members also benefitted from new technology being demonstrated called Visual Mine. A visual aid system helping consumers visualise their own room setting with a selection of pre-programmed flooring options. Members also got the opportunity to preview The Woven Edge who supply high quality bespoke rugs for retailers to sell in store through an online portal.

Likewise launch for mats William Armes The Solihull show was the debut for a new collection of mats launched under the Likewise name by William Armes to complement the company’s established Dandy brand. The Likewise Group acquired William Armes and Bruce Starke earlier this year to build its presence in this market sector and has been busy developing new products. There were five new ranges in the Likewise collection including three new machine washable polypropylene mats called Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki; a cotton option Bergen; and then Oslo, a highly absorbent polyamides microfibre mat. Building support for cleanability Woolsafe Woolsafe has been busy building support across the industry to reinforce their campaign about the cleanability of wool with a “bestpractice” approach to carpet and rug care. The organisation offers carpet manufacturers an associate membership and, with over 30 joining worldwide, UK signatories include Brintons, Ulster Carpets, Jacaranda, Kingsmead, Manx Tomkinson, Kersaint Cobb, Riviera Home, Gaskell Wool Rich and Clarendon Carpets. “The growing level of support from within the industry really helps us to promote the message about how easy it is to clean wool,” says Steve Bakker of Woolsafe (pictured left). The WoolSafe Certification Mark is widely recognised as the standard for excellence and safety of carpet care chemicals and the organisation is active in product evaluation and certification, education and training, and the promotion of professional cleaning and inspection services. The WoolSafe Stain Wizard is an excellent web tool to provide a step-by-step response to cleaning a stain and retailers can host the gizmo on their own websites to help consumers. Catalogue of choice Asiatic Carpets When you have as much choice to offer as market-leading Asiatic, it is a challenge to present it all in one place so the creation of the company’s stunning new catalogue is a major achievement. Curating their collection of over 100 ranges, of which 47 are new for the 2019 season, has taken more than nine months to create but it has been worth the wait. The catalogue’s 364 pages tell you all you need to know about the state-of-the-art in rug trends and design. “It makes an impressive calling card!” says Neil Farrell (pictured far left). Neil was also showing off one of Asiatic’s most recent introductions, the Turkish machine-made Astral Collection (pictured left), the texture of which is created using sophisticated shrink yarns. Unusually the construction is in fine acrylic which is very soft but extremely hard wearing as it is a fibre that does not allow stains to penetrate. This is a very good looking rug range in nine modernistic options and some super on trend colours including mustard, blue, terracotta and silver. But if it is not to your taste, get hold of one of those catalogues and look at the other 102 collections you can choose from! T 020 8800 2000 www.asiatic.co.uk
Environmental credentials Carpet Recycling UK Numerous enquiries from retailers and flooring contractors interested in diverting carpet waste from landfill made 2019’s BGNFS a success for Carpet Recycling UK, the not-for-profit association for reusing and recycling waste carpet. “Retailer buying groups, such as CRUK associate members Flooring One, Metro and Greendale, support our efforts and how we can help members to further improve their environmental credentials by recycling their carpet waste,” comments Adnan Zeb-Khan, CRUK Scheme Manager. “Retailers and flooring contractors continue to express interest in diverting carpet waste from landfill and recognise the opportunities that this can generate for their businesses.” CRUK member Kenburn demonstrated how, through efficient compaction, their ‘Carpet Crusher’ can reduce costs associated with haulage of bulky carpet waste. With over 60 flooring supplier category members – representing well over half of CRUK’s total membership – this sector is successfully engaging with their customer base through social media, helping to spread the ‘carpet recycling’ message. “By supporting our retailer members’ recycling endeavours with point-of-sale promotional packs, membership certificates and a listing on the CRUK website, we confirm their commitment to improving their environmental credentials – and contributing to the circular economy,” adds Adnan. Flooring manufacturers of carpet tile, carpets and underlay are engaging with CRUK in ongoing sustainability related to design and production of new products. CRUK was founded in 2008 to tackle the 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arising in the UK annually. Its core funders are Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/Headlam, Brintons Carpets, DESSO, ege, Milliken, and Balsan. In 2018, 175,252 tonnes of carpet were reused, recycled or recovered for energy; representing a landfill diversion rate of 44%. T 0161 440 8325 www.carpetrecyclinguk.com from The Stocklists

Fashionable fibres Cavalier Carpets Cavalier Carpets continues to be a creative force in quality carpets that retailers can rely on and rolled out new ranges in both natural and man-made fibres at the buying group show. Right on trend is the new Provenance, a textured loop pile in undyed 100% Swaledale wool with a hard wearing 3-ply construction available in 4 and 5m that is part of the company’s Couture Collection. The fibre has a fashionable greyish tone and has been manufactured to present an attractive total stripe design which was used to great effect on the stand floor in Solihull (pictured left with Cavalier’s Hans Lowe). Also notable in wool was the first sight of Cavalier’s tenth gauge top-end 80/20 ranges Architect and Guildhall in their new palette which has a total of 17 new colours in each, while preserving the best-selling shades in these popular ranges. The eighth gauge Criterion and Liberty were similarly recoloured. Finally, there was a preview of Cavaliers new polyester range Plush which offers soft luxury alongside impressive performance in eight colours which will be seen in the market later this year. Keep the customer satisfied Computers for Flooring “Everyone wants the Amazon experience now,” says Kristian Bailey, Managing Director of Computers for Flooring, “and our mission is to help flooring people meet the growing expectations of their customers.” The company’s software product, Carman, is written specifically for the flooring industry to manage every aspect of the business from specification and quotation through to the final invoice and tax return. But their focus recently has been in building features that help retailers and fitters be more responsive to their customers – for example, keeping consumers in touch with progress through text messages and developing an Android / IOS mobile fitter app that gives the fitter all the job and customer info on their mobiles as well as the ability to upload pictures of the job when completed and take a customer’s signature. “It’s often the small things that keep the customer happy and we have built a lot of attention to detail into our system alongside the comprehensive business processes. All this allows flooring people to deliver a big-company customer experience from a very affordable package,” adds Kristian.

A taste of classical Venice LDP Premiering to the UK flooring retail industry for the first time, Splendore di Venezia, was the star of the stand for Louis de Poortere at this year’s Buying Groups National Flooring Show. Inspired by the opulence and splendour of classical Venice, the brand-new collection uses high-gloss polyester raffia, a flat tape-like continuous yarn, to give it a unique look. Louis de Poortere weaves, twists and turns the silver and gold yarns for a dazzling effect. Mixed with cotton chenille and woven into striking geometric and abstract patterns, this extra-strong yarn sets Splendore di Venezia apart. “The manufacturing process behind Splendore is something quite different,” explains Alan Russell, sales director UK for the brand. “It’s resulted in a fabulous look that revels in enchanting detail and it certainly caught the attention of many visitors to this year’s show.” T 01505 615663 www.louisdepoortere.com

Taking it up a gear Balta Underlining its commitment to delivering the very best in products and service to UK carpet retailers, Balta unveiled a raft of new innovations to buying group members in attendance at this year’s BGNFS. With six cut-length ranges and an exciting new roll programme, Balta certainly had lots to tell, using the event to showcase the latest in carpet styles. Marking a return to traditional pattern carpet, the manufacturer showed Stalcaire, a 100% IMPREL soft 1/8th gauge Saxony available in the printed pindot of Jewel and Fleur De Lys. Using a heat-set yarn to give the classic style resilience and longevity, Stalcaire is available in six colourways and in four and five-metre widths. The growing Leonis collection of super-soft and stain-resistant carpets also saw space on the stand with the introduction of Tintagel and Lansdowne. In smoky greys and blues, along with pale Meringue and White Pepper, Tintagel is a collection that leads the way with its on-trend palette and lavish pile. Innovation on display Stairrods Stairrods has built its reputation on innovation for its class-leading products and at Solihull they demonstrated how they apply the same imagination to their point of sale displays. To present their substantial range of top-quality trims, profiles and accessories, the company has designed two “whiteboards” – one for carpets and one for hard flooring – which have a set of product sections mounted on one side and installation instructions printed on the reverse. “This started off as an interesting idea and now everybody wants them,” said Keith Vowles (pictured with Katie Herdman). “So we are making them as fast as we can as retailers are finding this is something they can really work with, especially in customers’ homes.”

Outstanding attraction Kingsmead Carpets Kingsmead’s attractive stand at the Solihull show was dominated by their eye-catching new point-of-sale system which works as wall displays but was shown in an impressive island configuration to great effect – and they have plenty of new ranges to put on it! Pennine Twist has just been launched as a competitively priced, entry-level 80/20 twist with plenty of options across 12 colours and three weights. Meanwhile, Kingsmead’s highly regarded Ayrshire range now has an improved specification as an 80/20 in New Zealand wool, including 5% polyester, and 15% polypropylene across an impressive range of options – 20 colours in plains and heathers including a great selection of pastoral shades, two weights 40oz and 50oz and in 4 and 5m. Flooring
Factsheet Adhesive Types Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticized PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors.
ADHESIVES
SELECTION CHECKLIST
The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time: The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked. Odour: Low odour, solvent free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.
Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels.
Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.
Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive.
Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.
Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.
Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured. Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but
this criteria must be checked where appropriate. Subfloor: What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard. While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces. The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation. Special Performance: Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments. Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.
The Perfect System for your Designer Floor The perfect adhesive choice for luxury vinyl tiles Choose Styccobond F46, the market leading pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. Stopgap 300 HD, Stopgap P131 and Styccobond F46. The perfect system for simply stunning luxurious floors.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.
Benefits
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will...
• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Combination
Crumb
PU foam
www.interfloor.com
Types
PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling. Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk
Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.
www.underlay.com
Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Fading on Wool
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Colour matching
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
66
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment. THE STOCKLISTS July 2019
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
Flattening
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
Shading
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
Pile Reversal
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
Shedding
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Indentations
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder. THE STOCKLISTS July 2019

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions
ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS July 2019
Increase sales
• Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support
Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.
