Rug riches

Inspired by a fragile yet beautiful piece of Chinese wallpaper from the 1860s, Pheonix is one of the four rug designs from the SS18 launch for the V&A Inspired collection from Luxmi by Flair Rugs.

Hand-tufted and hand-sheared in India from 100% viscose yarn for a subtle iridescent quality that echoes the delicacy of the original wallpaper, Pheonix features a majestic central motif of the mythical bird, surrounded by blooming peonies. Both of these symbols have meaning in Chinese culture; the bird an emblem of prosperity and the flower of ‘riches and honour’, a national symbol found throughout Chinese history. As part of the V&A Inspired collection, Pheonix draws from an artefact held within the V&A’s rich archive, charting human culture over the last 5000 years. The world’s leading museum of art and design, the V&A is an incredible resource, seeing Flair Rugs present rugs created from the intricate work of French artists to seminal textile patterns defining the Art Deco period and advertising work celebrating the heyday of ocean liner travel. In a combination of duck egg blue and ivory, Pheonix translates the historic design into a rug perfect for modern homes. Retaining the essence of the original work, while making the rug relevant to today’s consumer is an essential part of the collection’s success. Sinead Donohoe, head of marketing, Flair Rugs, comments: “While we owe much to the V&A’s impressive archive in providing the resource, the success of the designs within the collection is as much testament to the skills of our designers, who’ve been able to interpret the originals with sympathy while making them applicable to modern design taste. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Pheonix, a beautiful, large-scale design in a palette that resonates the subdued tonal combinations found in today’s homes.” As with the rest of the V&A Inspired collection, the exceptionally soft Pheonix comes in three standard sizes (120x170cm, 160x230cm and 200x290cm). Undisputed champions

In a further boost for its retail membership, the Carpet Foundation has become the only Government approved Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) supplier in the UK carpet industry. Consumer law has changed, and all retailers now legally need a dispute resolution process. If they do not have one, retailers must, legally, tell their consumers. Carpet retailers who are not in the Carpet Foundation can still use anyone for disputes, but they must tell their consumers that their ADR supplier is not approved by the Government. Carpet Foundation retail members are now automatically covered but other retailers are not so fortunate. They will have to find an ADR supplier. Commenting on this latest coup, Chief Executive Andrew Stanbridge said: “We do not make the law – but we, and our members, do comply with it. The law is now even more firmly on the consumer’s side. However, for our members, it is very much business as usual. Others, however, are not so fortunate. There will be no hiding place for them either. Sticking their heads in the sand will only lead to trouble for them. Our retailers can now use this as a major competitive advantage and we will be encouraging them to do so, and milk it as much as possible. They are ahead of the game.” Gaining Government approval was a painstaking process and took a year to achieve. It involved copious paperwork and an on-site inspection and audit of systems by the Trading Standards Institute. The Carpet Foundation is required to publish, every quarter, on its website, the number of conciliations and arbitrations it has undertaken in the period – and the results. They will also be audited annually to ensure compliance and integrity. T 01562 747 359

Getting a better grip

Grip Supreme, IVC Group’s most popular residential vinyl flooring collection, has now been improved with an optional felt backing to bring even more comfort and faster installation. This new felt back brings an industry-first; a vinyl flooring collection available in both felt backed and foam backed.

With the ability to absorb subfloor imperfections, the optional felt backing ensures that Grip Supreme can be installed over a wider variety of subfloors including thermoplastic tiles, ceramic tiles and base layers with small irregularities, reducing preparation time and making installations faster. Additionally, the felt backing also means that Grip Supreme can be loose laid up to 20m2, improved over the standard 12m2 achieved with the standard cushion-backed specification. In 18 wide-ranging looks – from classic oak and on-trend herringbone to modern tiles and mosaics – Grip Supreme is packed full of choice and is sure to hold a style for any home, whether traditional country cottage or modern apartment. Thanks to each design being available in two, three or four-metre widths, Grip Supreme is perfect for even the largest of family rooms. Stuart Reeves, residential sales manager, IVC Group, comments: “Our biggest volume seller, Grip Supreme is cemented in the landscape of residential cushion vinyl flooring, but that doesn’t mean we should rest on our laurels. In fact, the opposite is true and so we have worked hard to make sure that Grip Supreme is technically excellent, while still delivering ‘bang for the buck’. On a like-for-like value basis, there is nothing that rivals Grip Supreme for its choice and function, particularly with the addition of this new felt backing.” Grip Supreme comes with a seven-year residential wear warranty for felt backed and a five-year warranty for standard foam backed quality. With this new backing, the UK’s number one cushion flooring looks set to hold on to its crown for quite some time. T 0800 032 3970 www.ivcgroup.com

New LVT concepts in wood

With a Class 34 Very Heavy Commercial rating, there is no doubt that the Concept Woods vinyl flooring collection is ideal for use in high-wear areas such as corridors and halls and congregation areas and now with brand-new and more authentic wood looks, the range is even more suited for use in school refurbishments this summer. Covering the bases of classic oak and grey planks with consummate ease in familiar designs such as Tavel and Calais, Concept Woods is already a go-to collection for many contractors and specifiers, but with new Groutless Wood and Chevron Oak, it features the manufacturer’s most forward-thinking wood looks. The entire collection is also afforded the new T-emboss technology with easier maintenance, better stain-resistance, improved aesthetics – through reduced light-reflectance - and better slip-resistance. With Hyperguard+ PUR technology, Concept Woods retains aesthetic integrity with minimal maintenance and is available in two and four-metre widths, fully-compatible with Invisiweld. In a finish such as Groutless Wood, the combination of a four-metre width and Invisiweld is crucial in maintaining the visual ethos of the floor, reducing the number of seams and making any almost impossible to spot. Groutless Wood is a variation on the ‘endless’ wood look, a unique take on the aesthetic that underlines vinyl flooring’s capacity to imagine natural materials in a new perspective. Available in a whitewashed and greywashed oak, it’s a striking design that mixes the popularity of seamless finishes with the warmth and familiarity of wood. In Chevron Oak, commercial interiors have access to a classic parquet look without the fuss. Creating a vintage feel, the design is available in dark grey and light grey colourways, as well as a light-natural oak. It joins the collection to give 15 wood effect vinyl floors, all with the enduring performance that comes with all Itec Contract Floors decorative floors. T 0800 032 3970 26 June 2018

Voice of the trade Richard Harris on his retirement from F.Ball & Co. Ltd. What’s been the biggest change you have seen over your career? The use of IT, the Internet and the explosion of the digital environment. In the early Eighties, communication was by phone, fax or mail. Product information was only in printed format and photographs were taken on film and had to be sent away to be processed. Electronic media has made a huge difference to the speed we now work. Will more things change in the next 10 years than have changed in the last 10? Predicting the future is notoriously difficult. Instinctively, I’d say yes, but over the past ten years business has had a tough time and generally companies don’t tend to invest as much in R&D and product development as when times are good. And with Brexit in the mix, who knows?

What is the product you are most proud off and/or which has made the biggest difference? I’d say F. Ball’s Stopgap 1200 Pro, a levelling compound that can be applied over adhesive residues and doesn’t normally need a primer. This has been a massive time-saver for contractors, who made it one of our most popular products in a very short time after it was brought to market.

If you had to single out one thing, what do fitters need to do better? What I would say is that contractors would benefit greatly from keeping up with their training. Products are constantly evolving and new products are regularly introduced. Understanding how these products fit in and the benefits they can deliver, particularly in terms of speed and effectiveness, are all part of F. Ball’s training to keep contractors up to date. We also find that when contractors have the chance to experience new products during training sessions, the feedback we get is overwhelmingly positive.

What advice would you give to a young person thinking of a career in flooring? People will always need flooring; in their homes, workplaces or public buildings. It’s as secure a career as you’re likely to find. And, from my experience, people in the industry are generally a pretty good bunch.

What’s the best thing about the flooring trade? Following on from my last answer, the flooring industry is a good community of people, which is important when you’re spending your career in it.

What’s the worst thing about the flooring trade? Like most construction-related industries, it’s very conservative, often slow to change and embrace new ways of doing things.

What was the most fun you’ve had in your career? I think being at the flooring exhibitions, especially The Flooring Show in Harrogate. Meeting and socialising with customers, media colleagues and the many friends we have from flooring manufacturers makes the event something I look forward to every year. Harrogate, in particular, has a great atmosphere and is a good location for an exhibition. What will you miss most about the flooring trade in retirement? Without a doubt the people I deal with, from the wider industry and my colleagues at F. Ball. F. Ball is a fantastic company to work for and I can’t image anywhere better to work in the flooring industry.

Richard launching F49 at Harrogate last year.

What are you most looking forward to doing in the future? Travelling and doing all of the things you don’t get the time or opportunity to do when you’re working.

“What I would say is that contractors would benefit greatly from keeping up with their training. Products are constantly evolving and new products are regularly introduced. Understanding how these products fit in and the benefits they can deliver, particularly in terms of speed and effectiveness...” 28 June 2018

NEWS Market first for eco yarns Beaulieu Yarns, the global supplier of high-quality synthetic polyamide and polypropylene yarns, now offers sustainable versions of all its polyamide (PA6) yarns for carpets for residential and commercial use, including automotive. A first for the carpet industry, new EqoBalance PA6 yarns follow the biomass balance approach, which ensures that at the very start of the supply chain, natural renewable raw materials can partially or even completely replace fossil resources in the production of polymers processed into yarns. The sustainable yarns from Beaulieu Yarns conform to the TÜV SÜD certification standard CMS 71 “Certification of the use of renewable resources”, which confirms the saving in fossil resources. The potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as a result of the replacement of fossil use is calculated in a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). EqoBalance yarns hereby allow a reduction of up to 75% of CO2eq/kg compared to our fossil based yarns. EqoBalance yarns do not compromise on either quality or performance, as their formulation remains identical to their fossil-based equivalents. Since they are a drop-in alternative solution, tufters need to make no alterations to their manufacturing processes or final products. Beaulieu Yarns offers a wide variety of PA6 yarns for use in carpet tiles, carpet planks and broadloom carpets for commercial offices, hospitality & leisure, education & healthcare premises, automotive, and residential. Karena Cancilleri, Vice President of Engineered Products, Beaulieu International Group, comments: “Carpet tufters are requesting more environmentallycompatible yarns to support their overall commitment to greater sustainability and more efficient resource use. We see biomass balance as the fastest path forward and, through EqoBalance, are excited to pioneer this milestone for the contract market as part of our long-term strategy to give customers a fundamental new choice to step into sustainable products and contribute to a better world.” T +32 477 82 05 13 www.bintg.com

Scale and polish

Floor preparation products and adhesives from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have delivered a super smooth, hardwearing and attractive floor finish for dental practice Ten Bolscher in Rijssen, The Netherlands.

The work was part of a total refurbishment of the practice to create a modern, contemporary style and layout. The project also demanded tight timescales required to get the practice operational again. Part of the floor area had formerly been used as a bathroom and required the sand/cement subfloor to be raised by 40mm. To achieve this, contractors from Ter Harmsel Interieurverzorging applied F. Ball’s Stopgap 600 Base deep section compound, after priming the subfloor with Stopgap P131 Another area of the subfloor featured Fermacel boards, which were primed with two coats of Stopgap P121 acrylic primer, prior to the application of Stopgap 300 HD levelling compound. To minimise installation time, the Stopgap 300 HD was pump-applied over the entire 160m2 floor area. Both Stopgap 600 Base and Stopgap 300 HD are protein free, making them suitable for use in biologically-sensitive areas such as healthcare facilities. Once the levelling compound was fully dried, Expona Design PVC tiles and planks were installed in different areas of the dental practice using F. Ball’s Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. This solvent-free adhesive offers a high initial tack, to prevent tiles and planks from moving during installation, and produces a very high bond strength, which continues to build over time. Once the Expona Design flooring had been installed, the rooms were immediately ready to use. T 01583 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Female friendly flooring

F. Ball and Co. Ltd. held its second ‘Women in Flooring Course’, back by popular demand since its initial run in 2016. The course was held at the F. Ball Training Centre, and was specifically designed for women working in the flooring industry to develop their experience and knowledge in a female-friendly environment.

The participants came from lots of different areas within the floor sector, with roles ranging widely from administration to sales. One thing in particular these women had in common, however, was a strong desire to increase their knowledge of F. Ball products, with one lady even travelling from Greece to attend. Those who took part were full of praise for the course, commenting on how much they learned and how this will undoubtedly help them in their various jobs. Tracey White, from M&S Carpet and Flooring Limited, said: “I am very new to the flooring industry so I liked everything about the course and found it very useful. I now have a knowledge of what goes into prepping floors in readiness for the final floorcovering.” F. Ball’s aim was to encourage women working in the flooring industry to develop their knowledge and experience in all areas of the subfloor preparation process, and many of the attendees said they felt a lot more confident recommending products to clients and work colleagues. Trying out the products for themselves and witnessing firsthand how they are made in the factory proved to be a popular component of the course, with another participant, Joanne Poulton, commenting that it was “without doubt, the best factory visit ever! We were made to feel very welcome and looked after brilliantly.” T 01583 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Approximately 150m² of Expona Commercial PUR luxury vinyl tiles in the Tanned Chevron Parquet design was installed by Graham Flooring as part of the boutique hotel’s ground floor refurbishment project. With 14 bedrooms, The Falcon Hotel is a historic building, originally established in the 17th Century as a coaching inn. This product is one of the out-ofthe-box design floor options which allows flooring contractors to create a chevron parquet effect quickly and easily, with minimal cutting required. Star-shaped awards for innovation A major new awards scheme to recognise innovation in the flooring industry has been launched with up to 40 star-shaped accolades due to be awarded by an independent judging panel in time for The Flooring Show in Harrogate this September.

The National Flooring Innovation Awards 2018 is designed to be different to the usual ranked prizes given out across the industry and instead sets out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional in the sector. Awards scheme organiser Bridgette Kelly commented: “We are focused on ‘what's new’ so that buyers can easily spot the latest and greatest products and services in the sector. We think this is much more relevant and useful to the trade than conventional first, second and third place prizes.” The scheme opened to entries on May 14 and is expected to attract up to 100 submissions from manufacturers, suppliers and retailers. The Stocklists magazine is the media partner to the awards and readers are encouraged to submit their favourite new products and services using the online form at www.flooringinnovationawards.com

The Awards website is ready to take submissions from manufacturers, suppliers and readers at www.flooringinnovationawards.com

Judging will take place in August by a panel of industry leaders including Chris Moffat and home interest magazine editors. The award winners will be announced at the beginning of September and ten exceptional “Innovation Gold” titles will be handed out at the Harrogate show. The Innovation Stars will quickly be recognised as a key credential in the industry - with a distinctive star logo that can be used on promotions. Award categories not only cover flooring products, but also recognise achievements in service, technology and marketing.

The ‘Innovation Star’ is expected to become a badge of honour to identify the industry’s most interesting new products and services 32 June 2018

Ulster’s Fusion is a unique axminster range with striking patterns and colourways, designed to make an impact. Elements of this range were influenced by patterned cast concrete architecture of the late 1960s.

Moduleo Design Floors

Explaining the inspiration behind Fusion, Calvin Pope, Residential Designer at Ulster Carpets said: “On my daily commute to work I pass a dramatic series of concrete blocks that were designed by sculptor William George Mitchell and erected in the early 1970s.Their carved organic feel is in stark contrast to the often bland smooth surfaces of modern buildings and creates a refreshing patterned backdrop. These sculptured textural designs still feature in most urban city landscapes and provide large scale design statements. Ulster’s Fusion range uses muted grey colour to replicate contemporary designs of this era and is a departure from traditional axminster carpet designs.” Fusion features 3 designs in 5 colourways and its 80% wool, 20% nylon combination makes it suitable heavy wear.

“From wood and stone-effect, to more abstract designs, the capability of flooring technologies has never been better.”

Moduleo, for example, can achieve the same authentic aesthetics as natural wood or stone materials with a much lower price tag. Thanks to manufacturing techniques, such as cut-in and embossed register, the same knots and grooves that would appear on the true article, can be recreated on vinyl alternatives. Where the ‘real thing’ was once favoured, due to its finish and durability, vinyl flooring products are becoming increasingly popular as they offer authentic surface finishes, while being quick to install, easy to maintain and durable enough to withstand day-to-day pressures– all of which are crucial factors for residential and commercial projects alike. To celebrate 25 successful years of their York Wilton range, Ulster Carpets is excited to reveal seven new colourways – Orkney, Shetland, Chambray, Indigo, Nougat, Goose and Mockingbird. The addition of seven new colourways sees the already extensive colour palette grow to fifty, allowing for great coordination with any interior scheme. Inspired by trends such as Natural Elements and Artisan Textures, these fresh additions embrace tones of soft blues and warm greys. And thanks to Ulster’s unique Multi Width service York Wilton is available in 5m, 4m, 3m, 2m and 1m widths. This service reduces wastage and is more cost effective for customers. Texture is also an essential element in plain carpets, whether it’s the smooth finish of a velvet or the adaptable texture of a twist, texture and colour are key in creating ambience. Brintons plain carpet range is anything but ‘plain’. Their four ranges each have a different texture, from twist to velvet and in a palette of colours which can make all the difference to the look of a decorating scheme. Brintons Bell Twist has a unique depth and texture that has always helped it bounce back cheerfully from the rigours of everyday life and confidently promotes excellent performance wherever it is laid. The carpet yarn has an extra twist added to the spinning process which creates the renowned defined and textured surface. These distinctive colours have been matched with an open 5/32nd gauge, rare amongst wool twists, which offers an attractive rustic feel to the carpet. The yarn is also heavily twisted giving a hard, robust texture that is durable and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. Kasbah Twist has become a name famous throughout the industry. It was ground breaking when it came out and it still carries the reputation of being one the finest and most individual of twists on the market.

Victoria have put together a collection of textured loop carpets on one tombola under the brand of Natural Life, from a credit card contemporary style loop to a unique 70% Wool 30% Tencel which gives a soft feel with brighter appearance to enhance the beauty of this product and all using three and four ply yarns. BUSINESS NEWS

Carpetright to raise £60m Carpetright lives to fight another day following the backing of its shareholders and creditors at the end of April but expects further losses, and its future depends on a re-financing exercise that goes to a shareholder vote on June 6.

The restructuring plan involves the closure of 90 stores and the renegotiation of 113 other leases after landlords to accept a creditor voluntary agreement (CVA). Now, the retailer says it needs £60m to stay afloat – half of it to pay for restructuring its debt and day-to-day business cash and, the other half to invest in a brighter future for the business. Carpetright chief executive Wilf Walsh said this approach “will give us the resources we need to complete our restructuring and accelerate our recovery plan – to create a right-sized estate of stores on sustainable rents.” However, Carpetright has already braced the market for further bad news with another profit warning, this time suggesting that full year like-for-like sales are expected to be down by 3.6% for the year ending 28 April 2018.

Kids key to carpet growth

The new 2018 floorcoverings market report from MTW Research suggests the children’s carpet market continues to underpin optimism for the flooring market, whilst wood and laminate sales continue to grow share of the UK flooring market.

Based on flooring sales of more than £4 billion, the report identifies several growth trends such as the ‘minibaby-boom’ in 2012 underpinning healthy growth for the children’s floorcoverings market in 2018. The 230 page report also says the economic crisis of 2008/9 resulted in flooring losing some £1 billion in potential revenue in the last 10 years. Counting the cost of Brexit, MTW suggest that sales growth of 1-2% per annum could be lost in the floorcoverings market. T 08456 524324

Cormar delivers on service

Cormar Carpets has opened the doors to its new southern regional distribution centre at Hemel Hempstead, which will service customers in East Anglia and the South East of England.

Representing a multi-million pound investment, the new 130,000 sq ft facility – equivalent to 46 full sized tennis courts – will hold stock, cut and distribute carpet enabling Cormar to build on its award winning service record. The distribution centre also includes two cut lengths machines and a sortation system. It allows Cormar to stock up to 2,500 rolls of carpet. There are also nine loading bays, parking capacity for up to 60 HGV vehicles and new reach/counter balance trucks. Said David Judge, managing director at Cormar Carpets: “This project has been ongoing for the last two years, but the last few months has seen the plan come to fruition. It’s been a really exciting time for our business, seeing the property converted into a fully operational, modern carpet distribution facility. “The growth at Cormar has meant that we have had to plan for future expansion and this significant infrastructure investment demonstrates our commitment to our customers and the trade. The Hemel Hempstead area offers us perfect access across the South, allowing us to strengthen our distribution throughout the UK by servicing our existing customer base in the South from this one location. Plus it has created more than 40 new job opportunities locally,” he said. The distribution centre will sit alongside the company’s existing national distribution network which includes regional out-bases in the UK and Ireland as well as the main backing and distribution site at Brookhouse Mill in Bury, Lancashire. Cormar runs a distribution fleet of more than 60 vehicles, delivering to retailers, contractors and wholesalers throughout Great Britain and Eire, on a daily basis. T 01204 881234

Environmental anniversary

‘Celebrating 10 years of Resource Recovery’ is the theme for Carpet Recycling UK’s 2018 Annual Conference and Awards Event which opens at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham on Thursday July 5th.

The industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet will be marking a decade of achievements and significant contributions by members – both individuals and organisations – who have all helped to drive greater sustainability in the flooring sector since 2008. The one-day conference, sponsored by Invista, manufacturers of Antron Carpet Fibres will include the annual awards ceremony and offer valuable networking opportunities, CRUK’s conference attracts decision-makers from across the carpet supply chain including manufacturers, recyclers, waste management companies and retailers. It is also of interest to equipment suppliers and local authorities. Two international keynote speakers will be spearheading a packed programme that showcases the latest news on carpet recycling practice in the UK, US and Europe. Bob Peoples, Executive Director of the US-based Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) will highlight their latest developments in developing market-based solutions for the recycling and reuse of waste carpet. Dr Edmund Vankann of ECRA GUT, the EU carpet industry’s environmental programme will outline the development of a new Circular Carpet Platform in Europe to promote recycling and recover resources from carpet waste. “Thanks to strong support and commitment from our Core Funders, members and the entire supply chain, landfill diversion of waste carpet over the past decade has risen from 2% to 42%,” comments CRUK Director Laurance Bird (pictured above, centre). “In celebrating this fantastic achievement, we hope we can inspire others to join us as we make great progress towards our goal of 60% landfill diversion by 2020.” T 0161 440 8325 38 June 2018

Flower on Flooring Reaping the benefits of flooring industry training Keeping abreast with developments, including products and installation techniques, provides numerous advantages for trainees and their companies, according to industry experts.

F Ball and Co marketing manager Richard Harris says flooring industry training helps to ensure results meet customer expectations and endorses the sector’s reputation.

The company has seen increased demand for its advanced training courses as a result.

“Retailers are always on the lookout for fitters who can adapt their skills to include LVT. It’s important that they don’t stand still and our fitting courses can help strengthen knowledge, enhance skills and help them to stand out amongst their peers,” says Ms Coyle. The Academy for Excellence in Flooring trainer and assessor David Bacchus says: “People of all ages come to take part in the Master Installer programme at the Academy.”

The programme stipulates that they must have two-years’ installation experience and candidates are often surprised by the level demanded and the way the course pushes them outside of their comfort zone.

Older candidates occasionally falter due to the accumulation of bad habits, while younger attendees take on methods and practices more easily and Mr Bacchus says it is “incredibly satisfying” when someone achieves Master Installer status.

“All candidates are left in no doubt that this is a pass or fail course and our role as trainers and assessors is not just monitoring standards, but also problem-solving capability and an awareness of methodology,” says Mr Bacchus.

John Hopkins of John Hopkins and Associates (formerly RBI (Europe) agrees training is beneficial but says it is important to identify who to train and when, where and why this is necessary.

F Ball training centre at its Staffordshire headquarters

“Flooring industry training helps to ensure results meet customer expectations and endorses the the sector’s reputation.”

This will help all staff, including sales people, to develop a comprehensive product knowledge, while flooring installers should have the necessary fitting skills and a basic knowledge of the products being installed.

Its importance has increased with the development of products with advanced properties and applications: “For example, advancements in adhesives technology have enabled F Ball to create solvent-free adhesives with pressure sensitive characteristics that can hold floorcoverings in place over a wide range of temperatures,” he says.

Similarly, combinations of new, fast-drying levelling compounds, waterproof surface membranes and adhesives mean that contractors can now install floorcoverings in as little as one day. It is vital they know about these and how to use them to remain competitive, says Mr Harris.

“It’s essential that we keep up with the increase in demand so that we can give consumers their dream floor with the best possible service. As the UK’s market leader in luxury vinyl flooring, we pride ourselves on offering industry leading training courses”

While training increases knowledge and improves the quality of installations, it also helps to keep everyone aware of changes such as the emergence of calcium screeds in new build properties.

Mr Harris states this is why F Ball has invested £1m to establish a training centre at its Staffordshire headquarters, providing free instruction.

Karndean Designflooring national retail sales manager Stella Coyle says the growing popularity of luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) shows the importance of training its independent retail network to recruit, train and shape existing and future talent in floor fitting.

“It’s essential that we keep up with the increase in demand so that we can give consumers their dream floor with the best possible service and we pride ourselves on offering industry leading training courses,” she says.

LVT now offers more creative flooring design with different laying patterns, decorative borders, design strips and even bespoke logos. 40 June 2018

“The better the training/development programmes then the better performance and loyalty for the company”

Training should be carried out on site, where possible, supporting new recruits or those changing position within businesses to ensure the efficient running of the company.

“For flooring installers there is a number of excellent training centres including Floorskills who offer apprenticeships in most of the flooring materials,” he continues.

Benefits include: increased profits; reduced personnel turnover; and improved customer relations and service.

“The better the training/development programmes then the better performance and loyalty for the company,” says Mr Hopkins.

The Flooring Industry Training Association (FITA), is an independent, not-for-profit organisation and one of the leading providers of installer training for the commercial and domestic flooring markets. Co-founded by the CFA and the NICF it is an organisation run by industry for industry and underlines the flooring sector’s commitment to training and the belief that on-going training gives a strong competitive edge and increases recommendations from satisfied clients.

Offering a wide range of courses to suit not only those already working in the sector, who need further skills to widen their client base, the company states that it has specialist training centres at Loughborough (Leicestershire) and Kirkcaldy (Fife, Scotland).

All FITA courses are generic rather than brand focussed and are based upon best-practice, the company concludes.

Moduleo managing director David Bigland says it is “crucial retailers have a robust knowledge of our product portfolio and the team is committed to supporting this – it allows consumers to make the right decision and bolster sales.

“As part of our suite of training materials, we recently unveiled our new showroom initiative, which comprises an indoor display, seating area and on-screen product catalogue,” he continues. This provides extensive product knowledge, up-to-date information and a unique, in-store experience to help attendees set themselves apart from competitors.

“We continually update the display boards to ensure the retailer is seeing as much of our products as possible. The retailers have gone the extra mile to invest in training and are already reaping the rewards, such as geographical exclusivity and being top ranked on the Moduleo website to maximise exposure to prospective customers,” Mr Bigland concludes.

Readers’ Survey

The future of retail... High Street survival favours customer-focused independents Survival of the fittest seems to be the future for flooring retail with service-oriented independents optimistic they can offer enough to prosper, but the outlook for the industry overall remains challenging.

In our survey last month, just 22% were positive about the future of retail over the next five years with 48% expecting things to get worse.

But every cloud has a silver lining and 85% of our respondents said that the current problems at Carpetright would benefit independents. However, 14% said the news was bad for the sector as a whole.

A Yorkshire retailer said: “The fact we are in a business where all the major players are in trouble makes the customers smell blood! The only good news is that for the independent, as long as he turns up on a morning and locks up at night, giving top service can still make a good living. He will never get rich but do OK with maximum effort and minimal expenses. We have to wake up, the market will never be the same again.”

Asked which locations were taking the biggest hit in the retail downturn, only 15% said retail parks and 13% edge-of-town locations with nearly 60% saying that the High Street was taking the brunt of the decline. 69% said that footfall has noticeably declined in their town over the last two years.

Asked about sales growth in the year ahead, while 26% were expecting a decline, 46% said the situation was stable and an optimistic 28% were expecting revenues to increase. Nearly 80% of our readers said consumers were more price sensitive than they were two years ago.

We asked about the business environment for retailers today in terms of costs and promotion. 56% felt that business rates were unreasonably high in their area and a retailer in Hertfordshire commented for many readers regarding local authorities saying: “Overzealous and expensive parking restrictions in high streets is also a major factor in reducing footfall into retail businesses.”

However, there was less criticism of landlords with 46% saying rents were generally okay – but 34% say rises were outpacing business growth.

Turning to the costs that retailers can control themselves, over half of our respondents said they were maintaining staff levels but a third admitted to reducing staff costs while only 15% were increasing staffing. Encouragingly, 33% of retailers said they were spending more on promotion and store presentation to win more business and only 16% had cut back in this area.

Manufacturers came in for some criticism on pricing with 60% saying that suppliers were too ambitious with price increases given the current pressure on retail and very many readers feel that suppliers are much too quick to give accounts to non-retail businesses.

“Manufacturers who sell directly to fitters, builders and the public will only lose the custom of retailers – I have already started buying from smaller independent manufacturers who are less likely to sell direct,” said a store owner in Debyshire. Another comment from Wales attacked the big groups: “The idea of ‘profit’ has long gone in the flooring industry, particularly in the domestic market. The multinationals have dragged this industry down with their greedy sales tactics.” The Internet always comes in for plenty of criticism even though many commentators suggest that flooring is one of the sectors least impacted by online sales compared to say appliance retailers or clothing. 63% in the survey said the impact of the Internet was getting worse while only 22% agreed that the situation had stabilised in the flooring industry.

“We get lots of people in our small independent shop saying how they're sick of the ‘70%-off’ rubbish - they want an honest job at an honest price. Our sales have increased over the last two years particularly.” 42 June 2018

We received a big response to this survey so sorry that there were so many comments that we could not include! They all get read and inform our article. Thank you for taking part!

“The fact we are in a business where all the major players are in trouble makes the customers smell blood! The only good news is that for the independent, as long as he turns up on a morning and locks up at night, giving top service can still make a good living” “As joint owner of 3 shops and a warehouse I feel that personal service and excellent staff set us apart and keep us very busy. The downside to this is our profit margins are not what they should be, due to the new breed of savvy customers shopping around and getting prices from the internet,” says a reader in Cheshire. “I would never open a retail business if I were just starting out as it is clear to me with overheads so costly we would not survive.” There is still scope for the good independent to prosper says a Manchester retailer: “We get lots of people in our small independent shop saying how they’re sick of the ‘70%-off’ claims - they want an honest job at an honest price. Our sales have increased over the last two years particularly.”

A reader in Somerset agreed: “Carpet is ‘touchie-feelie’ so consumers need to handle the product. Having de-branded, we no longer fear the internet. Good front-of-house staff will always win because consumers need confidence when making big ticket purchases.”

“Our destiny is very much in our own hands; a decade ago the impending recession was going to see off a lot of our businesses. Being independent and proud, most of your readers raised their game and avoided the death knell. Now the monster is the internet; do we capitulate and cut our prices or do we stand firm and explain the strengths of buying from an experienced trader, with bricks and mortar premises, integrity, and reliability? We know which route we are taking, and trust most of the trade will stand firm alongside us,” said a North East retailer.

NEWS Specifiers’ definitive guide

The Specifier’s Guide to Flooring has launched in the UK. Officially unveiled at Shaw Contract’s showroom during Clerkenwell Design Week, the new ‘definitive guide’ will provide a specification tool for architects, designers, facilities managers and specifiers on all aspects of flooring.

Following in the footsteps of highly successful sister publication – The Specifier’s Guide to Tile & Stone – the new flooringfocused Guide includes commentary from the most prominent names in the industry, as well as technical analysis and inspirational imagery - from global case study references to exploded material make-ups. Its official launch in London’s design district included a presentation from Fiona Bowman MBA CBIFM, FCMI Senior Facilities Management Consultant. Fiona praised the new resource for its “compelling, substantive, clear and concise content; an invaluable guide for the complex specification process,” - whilst Simon Jackson, design consultant, described it as an “expert at your elbow”. “The Specifier’s Guide to Flooring is the must-have publication for every architect, designer, FM and specifier from Land’s End to John ‘o Groats. Never before has there been such a comprehensive guide to all aspects of an installation, and we predict that it will become the flooring handbook for everybody involved in installations,” added David Strydom, editor of CFJ. Academy experiences

David Bacchus has been a trainer and assessor at the Academy for Excellence in Flooring since 2015, but his history with the centre goes back to the very beginning, being one of the first installers to undergo the Master Installer programme in 2012.

Quickly recognising the benefits that the Master Installer programme could bring his business, including peace of mind and a workmanship warranty for homeowners, David Bacchus attended a training course back in the summer of 2012. Despite being an experienced installer, David found the course tested his skill base and took him out of his comfort zone, leaving a lasting impression of what he could achieve: “With three days of installing in a six-metre bay with every obstacle imaginable, the course tested my skills to the limit, attempting perfection in expansion gaps and cutting laminate to within twomillimetres around toilet pans,” says David Bacchus. “Candidates are often surprised by the level demanded and pushing them outside of their comfort zone sometimes yields interesting scenarios. Older candidates occasionally falter in the courses due to the accumulation of bad habits, even though their experience is apparent. For these individuals, we like to think of the course as a ‘reboot’; at one time or another, everyone has been guilty of opting for the shortcut when a clearer option will give a better end result. “Naturally, the younger attendees take on methods and practices more easily and it is incredibly satisfying when one of them achieves the Master Installer status and progress to further training courses in other disciplines. A constant remark is ‘that was the most intimidating installing I’ve ever done’, and the sense of relief in passing the course tangible. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

High performance floor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used in the installation of the flooring at a new luxury apartment project, 190 The Strand, in central London. Contractors from London-based firm, Affinity Flooring, used Stopgap Green Bag levelling compound to provide a high quality floor finish across the 6000m2 area, ahead of the installation of new Cavalier Cartouche floorcoverings. Affinity Flooring were contracted to prepare the anhydrite subfloor in the apartment building, which had been left to dry out naturally and surface ground after the building’s construction several months earlier. Following a consultation and survey with an F. Ball representative, Stopgap P121 acrylic primer and Stopgap Green Bag and 114 Liquid were selected for the project. The anhydrite subfloor was swept clean, then primed with Stopgap P121 primer. Stopgap P121 is an acrylic primer suitable for use over a wide range of absorbent surfaces, such as synthetic calcium sulphate/anhydrite screeds, and is pigmented blue to provide visual control of coverage uniformity. It is designed to promote the adhesion of levelling compounds and prevents unacceptably rapid drying of adhesives and levelling compounds.

Contractors from Affinity Flooring then applied Stopgap Green Bag smoothing underlayment and 114 Liquid to smooth out any undulations and provide a level finish for the installation of the floorcoverings. Stopgap Green Bag is a fast setting, low odour general-purpose levelling compound, suitable for use in light to heavy-duty applications over a wide range of subfloor types. Stopgap Green Bag has excellent self-smoothing properties, meaning that minimal work with a trowel is required, and it can be walk-on hard in just 90 minutes. Once the underlayment had set and dried, an underlay was fitted and the new carpets were installed. Craig Anstey, Divisional Director at Affinity Flooring, commented: “There’s great support available from F. Ball representatives and the Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG), so it’s hard to go wrong. They offer sound advice and every experience we have had with F. Ball has been faultless.” T 01583 361 633 44 June 2018

Buying Groups

National Flooring Show

“The Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show is the scenesetter for the season and the improvement in quality in the presentation and product development was clear to see.”

Flooring ups its game Tough market drives up quality and service By David Spragg

In a tight market, you need to try harder. The flooring industry is, and it shows with an increasing commitment to give retailers the best possible product portfolios to work with and backing it up with exemplary service. The Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show in Solihull last month is the scene-setter for the season and the improvement in quality in the presentation and product development was clear to see.

The key trends emerging are:

• More diversity in yarns used across all carpet types

• The sense of some resurgence in the appeal of wool • The growing strength of subtle patterns

• The increasing importance of vinyl in the retail mix • An intense focus on service

Yarn development can be a key differentiator in the me-too market of beige and grey carpet and it is noticeable that launches in polyester continue to grow, offering better performance than polypropylene with only a modest price increase and still with that bleach cleanability. Aquarius from Associated Weavers, Lano’s Pashmina and Silken from Cavalier are among the latest and others are on their way together with more nylon offers. In wool, the arrival of 3-ply with Cavalier’s Icon was a notable development.

After a long period in the doldrums it would also seem that things may be going more wool’s way as a host of factors coalesce to increase its appeal – the growing anti-plastic agenda and the focus on sustainability, flammability concerns, the rising costs of oil and the impact of exchange rates on imports, and so on.

Wool had never gone away of course. For example, the Flooring One buying group says a wool product is still their number one bestseller and natural fibre forms 50% of their top ten – and we know of synthetic manufacturers who are looking to up their offer in wool.

The classy wool designers are adding to the appeal by capitalising on the consumer interest in texture and more subtle patterns and there were some superb examples on show in Solihull including Brinton’s Perpetual Textures and Hugh Mackay’s Durham Edition – and if you thought soft could only be synthetic, check out Axminster’s interesting new Alaya made from lambswool and alpaca.

Stronger patterns are more popular than has been the case for the last decade – geometrics especially, but even bold designs such as those from Fell’s Carpets. Stripes continue to do well but have moved a little higher up market.

Colour still means grey and more grey doesn’t it? Well maybe there’s a new trend in “colours that go well with grey” to help consumers liven up their monochrome interiors – so brighter colours like blues, reds/pink and ochre/mustard shades are selling well.

An increasingly repeated maxim in these competitive times is that it is not enough only to be a carpet store you have to be a “flooring specialist” with a broader portfolio of products. Mainstream manufacturers like Furlong (through its Design Elements and Natural Solutions brands) and Abingdon (with its new SoftStep cushion vinyl) offer a full range of flooring types presented in a package that is easy for the retailer to work with.

Developments in LVT, including rigid core Korlok from Karndean Designflooring, also making this sector more accessible to more retailers – an important step forward to capitalise on the increasing popularity of these products.

Finally, suppliers are all too well aware that even if you have top products, success depends on getting it to the retailer with rapidity and reliability, and competition has never been more intense in this area.

Colmar has established its market leader status on the back of exemplary customer service and now main players like Furlong, Victoria, Associated Weavers and Abingdon emphasise that service is at the top of their priorities.

All good news to ensure that independent retailers get what they need, when they need it!

Mastercraft Rugs

Curating the collection Mastercraft are constantly curating their collection of rugs to ensure retailers have all the options aligned with market trends for colour and design – and having been voted once again as the Flooring One buying group’s top rug supplier of the year suggests that they are getting a lot right. “The market is so diverse and trends are constantly evolving so our role is to make sure we can respond right away to what retailers want, when they want it,” said Robert Dickson. “Service is king – you can have the best rugs in the world but they don't get sold unless they are in the right place at the right time.”

Winning Flooring One’s best rug supplier repeatedly is a major achievement in a demanding market

“Service is king – you can have the best rugs in the world but they don't get sold unless they are in the right place at the right time.”

As a result Mastercraft have virtually everything in stock in the UK and can offer a next day service for most products and locations. The company came to Solihull with six new ranges and updates to many of their bestselling selections. A key theme at the moment is traditional designs with a contemporary twist and Berber type patterns are trending along with polyester yarns which offer a little extra lustre to designer rugs. Mastercraft’s showcase Galleria range is constantly being updated and the company showed us all the work in several different weave types and yarn detail that is intrinsic to every one. “There is a lot of work that goes on in the background to create these amazing works which have all the authenticity that people are looking for, but still at an affordable price,” says Robert. The company’s legendary shaggy rug Twilight remains a bestseller, enhanced this year with some refresh of the colour bank with new whites, silvers and greys. If you prefer something (a lot) less plain, you could look at the new bright colours in Marrakesh which are real statement pieces for the home but also make an eye-catching design in-store.

The market is so diverse and trends are constantly evolving so our role is to make sure we can respond right away to what retailers want, when they want it.

Karndean Designflooring

Confident creativity

Scott Cochrane, Retail Sales Director of Kardean Desigflooring, is pictured with Jodie Fletcher, Retail Marketing Executive, in front of the latest POS for Knight Tile and Opus. Karndean Designflooring continues to set itself apart with the creativity and confidence of its product portfolio and the Solihull show was the first opportunity for many to see this in action with the development of the major new Knight Tile and Opus designs. These two glue-down ranges present a substantial breadth of options to cover the widest range of installations and the designers have been working hard. The wood and stone collection of Knight Tile has eight new decors in its larger 30” x 6” planks and four in the smaller 18” x 3” format and three new tiles. In the modern Opus collection, there are four new large 48” x 9”planks and three attractive new herringbone options, plus three new tiles in the popular concrete and limestone styles. “We are right on-trend with these designs which allow retailers to reflect the fashion for more open-plan, room-to-room installations,” says Scott Cochrane, Retail Sales Director of Karndean Designflooring. “You will also see that in addition to our attention to design and colour, we are also being creative with texture and size to create an exceptional range of options for consumers.”

“We are right on-trend with these designs which allow retailers to reflect the fashion for more open-plan, room-toroom installations”

Away from natural trends, visitors to the show were able to explore Kaleidoscope, a strikingly inventive flooring approach which made its debut at Harrogate last autumn and is now rolling out in a stunning range of options including woven, herringbone and geometric designs.

You will also see that in addition to our attention to design and colour, we are also being creative with texture and size to create an exceptional range of options for consumers.

“These are statement floors for discerning consumers,” says Scott. "Displaying the collection in store creates a lot of attention and really get the conversation going.” Kaleidoscope presents a range of predesigned configurations which gets increasingly exciting with the potential to customise the pattern for the consumer's specific requirement. The company's flagship rigid core LVT called Korlok was also being demonstrated in Solihull and has had a fantastic take-up in the trade since its launch with retailers responding positively to its problem-solving capabilities. The clever construction means the floor can be installed quickly over most existing surfaces without screeding as well as having waterproof performance and excellent comfort and acoustic benefits. Abingdon Flooring

The best is back Martin Peace is pictured (left) with Steve Byrne.

The best is back – and it is better! The relaunch of Abingdon’s flagship Stainfree Twist was one of the main stories of the show with the range that is much-loved by retailers being reborn in style.

Stainfree Twist goes back to the early 1990s and has been a solid bestseller for retailers throughout its development of some three generations – not to mention the copies created elsewhere! The latest incarnation is very much a “next-generation” twist. The construction has been upgraded to a two-ply tenth-gauge fibre and the benefits are obvious, with a finer, better defined finish and a stronger, but softer feel. “We have made a real difference here,” says Martin Peace of Abingdon. “You don't have to choose between a soft saxony and a performance twist – this carpet is giving you both. It is a solid a step forward and we have had a fantastic response to this launch at the show. “Retailers really know this product. Now they know it's even better,” says Martin. The range comes in 20 colours with both plains and heathers including some options where the subtlety is somewhere in between to create some very attractive options. T 01274 655662 www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

The return of vinyl cushion floor to the product portfolio at Abingdon was welcomed by retailers at the show thanks to smart presentation of the new SoftStep collection.

The “library book” lectern created for SoftStep is one of the most neat and modern in the market, showing a complete cushion floor offer across six ranges and the unit has already been taken up by several hundred stores.

“This is ideal for retailers as a simple solution to serve this sector,” says Martin Peace. “Everything is in there across a range of designs with different qualities and price points to meet every need. Cushion floor can be a profitable part of the business for retailers with good margins and our SoftStep approach makes it easy and accessible.

Interfloor’s beautiful stand at Solihull justifiably won the ‘best in show’ award and that same style and creativity is also obvious in the presentation of its latest products.

Shiny success

Interfloor’s beautiful stand at Solihull justifiably won the ‘best in show’ award and that same style and creativity is also obvious in the presentation of its latest products. A showcase feature was the launch of Premier Metals, the shiny new selection of metal edging profiles that has been in development for over a year to get it just right and the feedback from visitors suggested that the company had done just that. The new Premier floor edgings are available in two modern finishes, a very on-trend brushed steel and an elegant bright chrome. “The feedback has been fantastic for this range and it presents a real opportunity for retailers to add sales – when consumers see the style, it becomes a must-have purchase for their home,” says Interfloor’s Gary Cowley. The prestigious shiny black-and-chrome POS includes a stylish box and wall mounted panel which add to the glamour. Another distinctive major launch for Interfloor is the Duralay LVT underlay system which delivers a wide range of solutions for this increasingly important sector of the market. And the company is covering the ground comprehensively with three different options to address the requirements for all types of LVT – stickdown, double-stick, tackified, dry-back and click.

The underlays vary from 1.5 mm to 1.8 mm as suits each type of installation and sub-floor preparation times are significantly reduced. “This is an important step forward for us into a growing market sector,” says John Cooper. “We have developed this range with innovation and care to provide a highperformance solution. It is a lot quicker installing LVT on a Duralay LVT underlay and there are key benefits with a warmer and quieter floor.”

Flying high Furlong Flooring

Furlong were flying high at Solihull with an impressive presentation that shows how the company delivers on today's mainstream bestsellers while driving a product development programme to ensure tomorrow’s ranges will be ready to roll. And nowadays Furlong's portfolio is comprehensive across the full range of flooring beyond carpets with their Natural Solutions business building an impressive collection of wood, laminate and LVT ranges while the Design Elements brand gives retailers a complete package of cushion floor. New at the show was the soft-touch saxony Charm which is now being offered in cuts at 4 and 5m in 10 contemporary colours and also Taurus, a midrange roll-line twist in eight colours with universal felt backing. There was also a debut for Duchesse – offering a luxurious deep pile in eight colours at extremely good value. “Our mission is to make reliable products that retailers can sell strongly so expect many more carpet range launches from Furlong during the summer,” said Neil Valentine.

New at the show was the soft-touch saxony Charm which is now being offered in cuts at 4 and 5m in 10 contemporary colours.with universal felt backing.

In a tight market retailers are appreciating that they need to seek as many product sales as they can beyond carpet and diversify into a full flooring offer to meet every requirement of their customers.

The company’s Natural Solutions brand is going from strength to strength with a widening selection of laminate and wood flooring and the Design Elements cushion flooring collection brand has built a comprehensive range of options at all price points. “In a tight market retailers are appreciating that they need to seek as many product sales as they can beyond carpet and diversify into a full flooring offer to meet every requirement of their customers,” said Mike Symmonds of Furlong. “We have worked hard to create a complete flooring product portfolio for retailers that takes the risk out of trade buying in these sectors,” says Mike. “Before retailers commit to a basket of suppliers, we are just asking that they talk to us first to see if the Furlong one-stop shop is already everything they need.” T 01772 696787

With a strong palette of contemporary greys and neutrals, there are 14 heather and plain shades to choose from, available in ActionBac and FeltBac. WOOL RANGES, a sector still very important to the group and a few highlights at the show include: The Metropolitan Collection is one of the most popular collections– an exciting range of fine gauge loop striped designs all in 100% 3-ply Pure New Wool. There are three multi-stripes options, a dual stripe option as well as 11 plain shades to co-ordinate with these stripes. More excitingly, new for 2018 will be two additional two-tone stripe options, a grey/silver, a jade/cream and two vibrant multi-stripes, all available in 4 and 5 metre widths. The emphasis on ‘focus’ is an essential one for the company that has spent more than a year reorganising itself on a major scale...

Victoria Carpets

Future focus

Victoria Carpets is fully focused on its future as one of the sector’s smartest and most stylish suppliers now that its year of transformation in 2017 is behind it. The emphasis on “focus” is an essential one for the company that has spent more than a year reorganising itself on a major scale – not least with the manufacturing facility in Kidderminster being moved primarily to the group’s other manufacturing sites. “The extent of that change was a major challenge to our business though I am pleased to say that ultimately the transformation has been achieved successfully,” says Victoria Carpets MD Phil Hartley who oversaw the project. “I'm now pleased to be able to say that I am back in the ‘market facing’ business developing great new products and exemplary service now that we have no distractions and we are very excited about the future.” Helping him to realise the full potential of that future will be new sales director James Caldwell (pictured below left) who has joined from Balta Group after 15 years service, the latter working with national accounts. “It is a great time to join a business that has such strong support for its brand and its heritage and a great team of people,” says James and added:

“The bloodline of Victoria is all about the independent retailer and their loyalty – especially during the recent changes – they will now get the recognition that they deserve as we listen to what they want, and deliver.” The company has made a commitment that it is going all out for best-in-class customer service – based in part on three new distribution hubs, one of which has taken over the original carpet factory in Kidderminster plus another in Hemel Hempstead and a Northern area depot that is due to be launched next year. The product portfolio will be further developed and fine tuned in the months ahead say Victoria but launches at Solihull suggest that the company is already ahead with new ideas to meet market needs. The launch of Wentworth and Wentworth Saxony is an example of broadening that portfolio with an entry-level soft PP cut pile and a saxony dubbed "affordable Victoria" with a limited range of seven colours in 4 and 5m on action back which will get a big promotional push this summer.

It is a great time to join a business that has such strong support for its brand and its heritage and a great team of people.

On the wool side, Victoria was delighted with the reaction to their new, Burford Twist, 50oz 80/10/10 twist with a clever construction that has produced a classy looking range in 12 colours at a competitive price. Technical improvements in the product are likely to be enhanced as the company has taken the opportunity when moving their machines to upgrade equipment where possible and the best example is the company's backing plant which will be the final kit to move from Kidderminster and it will be one of the fastest and most efficient units of its type in the UK when it is installed in the new purpose-built 150m-long building in South Wales. Associated Weavers

Product pace-setters Associated Weavers is undoubtedly one of the industry’s most impressive pacesetters in product development and their ability to change the game – and maintain possession! – shows no signs of slowing down.

There is a really neat new velvet on offer from Associated Weavers in the form of Ourania – the latest addition to the company’s Sensuality Collection made from their exclusive iSense polyamide yarn.Velvet is enjoying something of a renaissance in the marketplace at present and this is a top product to take advantage of the trend with its 14 colours including some bold and rich tones and extremely soft touch. And if you were wondering how the AW graphic design department was going to increase the impact of its presentation still further, just wait to see the sumptuous, elegant graphics that accompanies the launch of Ourania! 2018 is the year of Vivendi in the UK – the company's ultimate carpet for anywhere in the home or as their marketing slogan would have it: “stress free carpet for happy people.” The secret of this go-anywhere tenth-gauge twist is AW’s remarkable iVivo yarn which is a solution-dyed nylon with sufficiently superb performance credentials to earn it a 25-year wear and stain warranty. “This is one of the most reliable twists in the market for retailers,” says Simon Lewyckyj, commercial director. “Retaiilers will recognise it as a great quality carpet – one that you can put down knowing that in years to come it will look just as good.”

Carpet people will recognise Vivendi as a great quality carpet – one that you can put down knowing that in years to come it will look just as good.

Vivendi Plains is available in multi-widths and in two weight options called Vibes and Soul and the range is supported by a POS package with “showstopping” images that immediately tell the story of the product’s robust performance. Building on the success of Vivendi, AW has introduced Vigour using the same yarn to create an attractive saxony in 15 colours – and later in the season, watch out for Verve and Ardour, a set of new heathers to join the family. More exclusive yarn development technology at AW can be seen with the launch of their first polyester range the Aquarius collection – a luxurious but durable carpet made from their new iVerse solution-dyed polyester yarn in two weights and 14 colours that has become part of the popular Invictus collection. “The quality here is conspicuous and we are expecting this to be a strong seller this year,” says Simon. Again, exciting new imagery which has become a hallmark of every AW product introduction has been updated to draw attention to the Aquarius collection.

Building on success Cormar Carpets Cormar has made it a hat-trick, scoring another winner for range launches in 2018 with Apollo Comfort – an entry-level sister product to the highly successful Apollo Plus. Earlier this year, Cormar brought in new colours for Apollo Plus – extending the options from 15 to 20 shades – and launched a revamped Sensation Heathers, now in two weights and 15 on-trend colours. New for Solihull, Apollo Comfort is a soft-touch 2-fold in their Excellon polyproylene yarn which provides family-proof performance in an attractive range of 12 grey colours. It also offers another opportunity for sales within Cormar’s soft family of products which incorporates the Soft Focus ranges as well as the Sensation Collection. At the show once again, Cormar Carpets was the winner of the prestigious award for the best carpet supplier presented by the Flooring One buying group at Solihull (see left). “Providing top quality performance is equally as important as having the right products in today's highly competitive market,” said Cormar’s David Cormack. “We are delighted to be able to demonstrate that we are still right at the top in delivering on that promise.” T 01204 881234

Not for the beige-hearted! Fells Carpets If it is impact you are after, you need look no further than Fells Carpets and their debut at the buying group show created a welcome, eye-catching addition to the event’s presentation with their striking display of strongly patterned ranges. “We know most people want a grey or a beige and we are not here for them,” says Carl Cummings of Fells. “but there are other consumers who want something a little different and we are in that business – and for retailers who want something distinctive on their displays.” And Fells’ distinction is dramatic with seven new wilton ranges for Solihull – all presented in the companies striking black and lime green coloured POS, bearing the slogan: Be bold. Be inspired. Be unique. A key feature of this POS is the large format photography which is so important in showing consumers how a strong pattern is actually going to look in their homes. “If you want to wow your hall, stairs and landing, a sample is not enough,” says Carl. Product development – it’s personal Penthouse Carpets The new MD at Penthouse made her debut at the buying group show but Shirley Jackson is no stranger to the business after 15 years with the company, the last six of which have been as production director. “I have always worked on product development and have done this by maintaining a very close relationship with our customers,” said Shirley (pictured left). “Penthouse is a very friendly, personal business. As an employee-owned company, I'm proud to say we have a really great team and we work hard to pull together to give retailers exactly what they want.” Promotion to the top job is not going to change any of that and the latest example which launched at Solihull is Esprit Nouveau, an 80/20 tenth gauge in three weights which replaces the popular Vantage and Aurora ranges. “We have taken the best-selling colours from each range an added six more,” says Shirley, “This approach makes it easier for everyone and it has been very well received.” Shirley also restated the commitment of Penthouse to colour citing the presentation of new Colorado, first launched at Harrogate, with its 18 exciting colours including soft contemporary tones of green, blue and heather. Practical patriotism Ball & Young The patriotic people at Ball & Young were flying the flag for the best of British at the Solihull show which took place just days before the Harry and Megan’s wedding won over the nation and the company’s stand imagery of royal celebration was stunning. The presentation underlines Ball & Young’s UK-made credentials and a good example was the launch of new options in the company’s Floorline brand of metal edging profiles including a full range of attractive and versatile stick-down products. The pride in Britain has a practical purpose as this market has been affected by poor quality imports in recent years and the uncompromising quality of the Floorline products has been well received by customers. “This is a reliable range and one with excellent opportunities for add-on sales,” says Ann Shaw of Ball & Young. The company is also showing its top innovations of the moment to much appreciation – the luxurious rubber Carpet Cushion underlay which now has a redesigned 1.2 tog, rating, ideal for underfloor heating; and the technically-acclaimed Eco Cushion underlay for artificial turf which is also now being specified for use under outdoor hot tubs. Future builds on heritage Edel Telenzo For Telenzo, 2018 is a year of celebration marking the company's 100-year anniversary but while there is some focus on the heritage of the past, the product developers have been busy concentrating on the future.

Telenzo’s UK head Mark Rooney is pictured with marketing manager Bernadette Mulder

In its successful fine two-coloured stripe Mainline collection, Telenzo has introduced one new grey and three new bright, lively colours. The elegant, subtle and smart striped quality will give any room or office a sophisticated appearance.

Also on show were new, refreshed colours in the popular Greenwich collection, a 2-ply 50/50, and the sophisticated, subtle stripes of Windsor. New in the line-up is Eton with a smart contemporary construction which complements the collection beautifully. There was also a big buzz around the major product launch of the Atmosphere collection – more about this in next month's issue. T 01422 374417 www.edeltelenzocarpets.co.uk

Splendid isolation Crucial Trading In splendid isolation in the middle of the Crucial Trading stand was the new compact “consultation table”, a brilliant concept for engaging consumers that goes far beyond conventional point-of-sale. This unit is intended to take centre stage in a designer showroom environment. “This is a focal point around which people will naturally congregate and it offers a lot to see and touch and talk about,” said Michael Turner of Crucial.

And the consultation table is practical too with a swappable selection of samples on the top deck and then six drawers that are configured to have rugs borders, flatweave, sisal, colourful ranges and finally a “recently launched” collection. But the real beauty is that all this can be highly customised to the individual retailer and his knowledge of consumer preferences in his area. T 01562 743 747 www.crucial-trading.com

Review: Showtime in Solihull The Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show May 15/16 2018

Iconic innovation Cavalier Carpets Cavalier came to Solihull with six interesting new products but the stars of the show were undoubtedly the new 3-ply 80/20 Icon range and the smart polyester plain, Silken. The unique 3-ply approach of Icon set it apart, along with its eighth-gauge construction in 50oz New Zealand wool. “This approach allowed us to lift the pile without losing any performance and that is a strong point of difference with all the 2-ply cuts in the market,” said Hans Lowe of Cavalier. Icon has been launched in 14 fashion colours and the company has been able to pitch the pricing within the general 2-ply range to ensure that this carpet is extremely competitive given its extra performance and 20-year wear warranty. Silken is Cavalier’s first polyester product and they have made this debut with some flair presenting a range of silky, deep saxonies in 10 smart plain colours. Polyester performance is approaching that of nylon but without the discouraging price tag and, of course, it is bleach cleanable so the company expects the keenly priced Silken to win on many points. Fresh focus Kersaint Cobb Take a fresh look at Kersaint Cobb – because they certainly have! The company which is known for its exclusive and sometimes different approach to the market has been completely restyled with new branding, a new look and feel, and a completely new brochure. “We have always had a distinctive personality in the marketplace and after working on our re-brand strategy, we now have a solid identity offering products within the aspirational and affordable approach that people expect from us. Our new identity works to deliver a bold and undeniably unique brand proposition whilst encouraging consumers to explore their sense of style and imagination,” says Jenna Kane. The company will be focusing on what they do best and their presentations at Solihull showed the way forward with a stylish POS sample table showing 227 options and a unique wood carousel unit which offers a novel solution to presenting 38 products across five ranges in one easy–to-handle display unit. British Wool In-store sustainable message The push by British Wool to promote natural fibre in-store with sophisticated, intelligent POS is well timed given the sense of a swing back towards wool in today's environmentally conscious marketplace. British Wool unveiled a large set of POS prototype options in their Harrogate presentation last autumn so that they could listen to what retailers wanted and respond with well targeted POS materials. “We have had a lot of interest and valuable feedback for this project and this has certainly helped to inform our decisions in developing marketing material that is really useful to the retailer,” says Graham Clark of British Wool (pictured right). The first result is a distinctive floor-standing display which sells the benefits of wool with impact, featuring Yorkshire wool grower Richard Wilson. There is a nicely designed consumer leaflet available for retailers to use too, which gives five reasons to choose British wool carpets including its fire resistance, easy care and of course sustainability. “The new point-of-sale is already making a difference in our store – it’s been in place for two weeks, and we’ve already had two sales on British Wool products,” commented Phil Langley of Pocklington Carpets in York. Perpetual patterns Brintons Brintons were showing their new Perpetual Textures carpet series – a sophisticated and understated yet contemporary and exciting this woven axminster range includes eight geometric patterns in varying shades of grey. Clever texturing techniques including mottles, striés and fades were used to give an innovative depth to the designs while keeping the practicality of a cut pile. Jodie Hatton, Creative Designer for Brintons says “The designs for this range were influenced by the beauty of chenille, corded and tweed fabrics and inspired by rattan and handwoven techniques plus the tonal palette gives a modern twist to nostalgic prints”. Woven using the famous 80% wool/20% nylon blend (pioneered by Brintons) these carpets are luxurious to touch yet hard-wearing so they will look great for longer. T 0800 505055 www.brintons.co.uk

Colourful celebration Ulster Carpets The team from Ulster Carpets enjoyed a busy few days at the BGNFS. Celebrating 25 years of their much loved York Wilton range, Ulster revealed seven new colourways – Orkney, Shetland, Chambray, Indigo, Nougat, Goose and Mockingbird - growing the already extensive colour palette to fifty. These fresh additions embrace tones of soft blues and warm greys and thanks to Ulster’s unique multi width service York Wilton is available in 5m, 4m, 3m, 2m and 1m widths. Also on show from Ulster were the new colourways added to the highly popular Beaumont, Braeburn and Tazmin ranges. All of these new additional colourways are available in five colour matching multi widths and are woven in an 80% wool and 20% nylon yarn. The sales team also welcomed the opportunity to further showcase Ulster’s loop ranges HΛBITÜS and Open Spaces, both composed of 100% wool and available in multi widths. Perfect polyester Lano Launched at the show, the Pashmina collection marks Lano’s entry into the polyester carpet segment; with the manufacturer’s usual attention to technical excellence helping to separate the style from the competition.. The growth in residential polyester carpets has been significant and Lano’s first entry to the market goes for a premium look, with the manufacturer placing emphasis on the technical qualities of the Halcyon luxury solution-dyed polyester yarn and carpet construction. The result is a style that not only delivers the exquisite softness for which polyester is famed, but also the performance and refined looks demanded by today’s discerning homeowner. A fine 1/10th gauge saxony quality, Pashmina is available in two qualities - Pashmina and Pashmina Luxe - ensuring that the style’s exquisite comfort can be enjoyed in a spectrum of homes. With lasting stain-resistance and the ability to be cleaned with a diluted bleach solution, Pashmina fulfils the prerequisites for high-quality carpet. Gary Alp, UK & Ireland residential sales manager, comments: “We wanted our first foray into the rapidly growing polyester segment to offer something unique and typically Lano, so we spent longer than most developing our Halcyon polyester yarn to ensure that it could produce a carpet without compromise.” The collection comes in 12 on-trend colours with a subtle heather effect that lends itself to both traditional and modern interior schemes. Available in both four and five-metre widths to reduce waste and minimise seams, Pashmina and Pashmina Luxe are available from Lano now on a dedicated Halcyon collection branded lectern. NEWS Crushing the landfill challenge

Over the past ten years the government have increased landfill tax by a staggering 200% in order to try and meet the 50% landfill diversion target for 2020 set by the EU in 2008. It’s recently been announced that the UK will back the EU “circular economy” package and has agreed to accept the following binding landfill diversion targets set by the EU, 55% by 2025, 60% by 2030 and 65% by 2035.

These targets will only be achievable by continuing to increase landfill tax which will inevitably increase skip costs. It’s not all doom and gloom though, especially for the flooring industry.

Kenburn Carpet Crusher - Glasswells

Both new and uplifted carpet and underlay waste can be recycled and with advances in technology, it now costs less to recycle these waste streams using a “Kenburn Carpet Crusher” than it does to send them to landfill. Not only do Kenburn supply the carpet crusher, they also provide free of charge waste surveys to determine the cost savings you’ll make. Their no obligation advice explains how the initiative works and how the materials are collected and transported. T 01727 844988

Ahead of the game

“We’re ahead of the game!” was an appropriate theme running throughout the Recofloor 2018 Awards Event at Liverpool Football Club’s Anfield Ground which celebrated the environmental commitment of its vinyl flooring recycling champions.

Flooring companies, contractors and distributors received trophies and certificates in ten major award categories, plus Gold, Silver and Bronze groupings, from guest host England football legend Kevin Keegan. These companies collected 563 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring through the takeback scheme in 2017, setting a new scheme record. Kevin praised Polyflor and Altro’s scheme as ‘real recycling with an end product’, adding: “This is a great scheme; I’m very impressed. Waste flooring has to be got rid of. So if it can be put in a rubbish bin where it’s thrown out, or into a special bin where it can be recycled, why wouldn’t you?” Reporting on the scheme’s 2017 achievements, Recofloor Manager Jane Gardner said the current high media profile of plastics presents a ‘great opportunity within Recofloor to show we are, by far, ahead of the game’. “Recofloor is a real example of best practice in the waste management and construction sectors,” she said. “To my knowledge there is no other scheme that has worked as successfully as this where the industry has pulled together; two competing companies are pulling together on one topic of waste and sustainability to make recycling happen. I think that is unique. T 0161 355 7618

Flooring factsheet Luxury underfoot

from Interfloor

Duralay underlays for LVT create the perfect installation

Interfloor has developed a specialist collection of Duralay underlays and adhesives designed to make luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) even more comfortable underfoot and to ensure the tiles look good for longer. The new LVT underlays are quick to fit, easy to work with, and help to reduce the need for sub-floor preparation and damage to flooring due to uneven sub-floors. The LVT adhesives are suitable for single stick, double-stick or for directly sticking LVT to the sub-floor. Duralay LVT Multi-Fit Underlay can be fitted loose lay, single stick or double-stick depending upon installation requirements and provides increased underfoot comfort and improved noise reduction. It also provides an excellent sub-floor, masking minor surface imperfections, and helping prevent the overstraining of joints. Duralay Multi-Fit underlay is particularly suited to larger areas and commercial installations. Duralay LVT Low-Grab Underlay is a versatile solution which can be used to install ‘click system’ luxury vinyl tiles. The underlay is loose-laid over the sub-floor or existing flooring significantly reducing sub-floor preparation times and the new flooring is positioned and laid onto the underlay’s unique low grab backing, holding the tiles in position preventing movement during and after installation. Duralay LVT Dry-Back Underlay can be used to install ‘dry back’ luxury vinyl tiles. A release film is peeled back to expose the pre-applied adhesive, the new flooring is then positioned and pressed onto the underlay’s unique high grab backing. The adhesive allows an open time whereby tiles or planks can be lifted and re-positioned.

New high-end edgings for luxury installations Interfloor has introduced new premium edgings offering a top-quality addition to its existing Gripperrods range. The new Premier floor edgings are available in two modern finishes that will complement the current trends in luxury home accessories. The Premier range includes a very on-trend brushed steel nickel or an elegant bright chrome which will co-ordinate well with other home accessories, light switches and door handles to ensure a seamless finish. Both finishes are available in six specialist trims designed to provide the perfect solution for all types of flooring. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 64

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

THE STOCKLISTS June 2018

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 66

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS June 2018

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

Associated Carpet Group www.acgcarpets.com Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 825520 richard@acgcarpets.com

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 68

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

F L O O R I N G FAC T S H E E T WOOL FIBRE

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain. British wool is bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to a carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 Wool Rich – Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Benefits of Wool Carpet 1. Practical

4. Internal Environment

Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

2. Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency.

Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production.

3. Safety

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

5. Eco/Environmental

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.
