Scott Arundell, regional sales director, comments, “The Ocean+ Beach House has been made to communicate the collection’s water-resistant technology, life-like wood designs and premium quality in a way that feels fresh and exciting. Centred around three toaster racks that display the collection’s 30 decors, as well as an additional module that shows the two plank sizes and thickness, the Ocean+ Beach House is an impressive pagoda-style lit structure that comes with a range of additional -features. From a surfboard carrying the collection’s main USP’s, to a comfy lounge chair, vases with dried flowers and plants; everything is included to create a laidback summer vibe all year round. “We’re really excited to present the Beach House concept as it’s unrivalled in the market,” continues Scott. “BerryAlloc’s Beach House display is a twist on the in-store concept that focuses less on the fundamentals of brand and solely on what benefits the collection brings to the end-consumer. The product message stays in primary focus, while the fun and sophisticated off-beat approach to communicating it makes the Beach House a hugely attractive proposition that is sure to become a destination for shoppers.”

Unique custom creativity Innovative new Altro Custom floors and walls allow you to create unique spaces exactly as you want them – delivering total creative freedom with the quality you expect from Altro. Upload your own designs online via Altro’s step-by-step Custom service or choose from a collection of images and patterns – the options are limitless. Altro Custom launches at the same time as the new Altro Operetta, Altro Orchestra and Altro Serenade ranges, which have natural shades in design options that borrow the visual benefits of carpet, stone and tiles, without the associated hygiene issues. Altro Custom floors and walls allow you to design for areas where looks not only count, but can positively affect the views and even the wellbeing of the people who live, work or visit. Imagine classrooms with floors that look like grass or sand; Mexican restaurants with beautiful views of the Mayan Riviera on the walls, or a cutting-edge fashion shop with modern art from floor to ceiling. A new ordering portal guides customers through the process of creating a custom floor, one step at a time, with guidance on file requirements, plus previews along the way. If you want the ‘wow’ factor but don’t have your own design, the Altro collection, which will be regularly updated, has multiple choices. To develop the new Altro Operetta, Altro Orchestra and Altro Serenade looks,Altro worked closely with customers, design specialists and industry leaders to hear latest trends and challenges. This collaborative way of working has resulted in new weave-style and terrazzo patterns. Drawing from water, rocks, foliage and weather, the new palette features greens, blues, greys and earthy tones, each discussed and honed with these customers and partners. T 01462 489 516

FLOORINGNEWS Pattern pops up The launch of Abingdon Flooring’s StainFree Wilton is seeing pattern pop up in stores across the country as the collection’s stylish lecterns hit the shop floor. Abingdon Flooring’s StainFree Wilton collection comes as a dual set of lecterns that are making a welcome return to pattern in carpet stores. The British manufacturer is reporting strong up-take for the carpet and is encouraging any retailers contemplating the collection to get in touch. Head of Marketing Millie Barlow, comments: “We’ve been delighted that the collection has really caught the imagination of our retailers and we’re looking forward to consumers sharing shots of their fab new patterned carpets on social media.” On one lectern, customers will find a range of beautiful floral designs, while on the other reside tartans and checks. All carpets are classic patterns given a new lease of life with elegant colourways taken right out of the hottest looks. By grouping patterns on two lecterns, Abingdon Flooring is making it easy for anyone to enjoy the uplifting power of pattern. “While there are many people that feel comfortable in choosing strong patterns for their home interiors, there are probably far more that want a little guidance and reassurance,” continues Millie. “The StainFree Wilton collection offers just that – a considered selection of designs with colourways that never feel too daring but that also offer something a little bold should they really discover their adventurous side.” Each style is available fourmetre wide and is made from high-quality polypropylene yarn for patterned carpet that’s also great value. Enjoying a StainFree for life and 10-year wear warranty, the bleach cleanable Wilton collection is ready to make pattern accessible to more homeowners than ever before. T 01274 655 694

Water-tight tech BerryAlloc has been pioneering water-resistant laminate since 2008, when it first introduced its Hydro+ technology to the market. Hydro+ is the original water-resistant technology developed by BerryAlloc in 2008, signalling a revolution in the laminate flooring industry and instantly making the floor suitable for use in bathrooms. Hydro+ uses precision engineering and a varnish that’s applied to the edges of the plank to form a seal that prevents moisture ingress to a water-repellent HDF core. The result is a floor that’s water-resistant as soon as it leaves the factory with the capability to hold off standing water for up to 24 hours, plenty of time to mop any excess spills away in even the busiest home. Scott Arundell, regional sales director, BerryAlloc, explains: “Hydro+ was developed over a decade ago but there has yet to be a technology that offers a better, or more proven, alternative to the challenge of making laminate floors suitable for bathroom use. The water-tight seal provides reassurance in almost any situation and means even the splashiest of family bath times can be enjoyed without the worry of long-term damage.” With a track-record of 13 years, Hydro+ is proven technology and one that finds itself on an array of laminate floors from BerryAlloc, all now offering a 15-year guarantee against damage from moisture. The new Ocean+ collection is the latest to feature the water-tight seal at plank edges, and it also delivers a floor to be enjoyed throughout the home with Eternity and Eternity Long.

FLOORINGNEWS Lifetime skills Through the Quick-Step Master Installer programme the Academy for Excellence in Flooring is the UK’s only training centre to provide access to a lifetime manufacturer-backed warranty on workmanship. For many homeowners considering an investment floor, the worry is not the product itself but who they will get to install it. As an unregulated industry, it is a minefield of recommendations, online reviews and trader websites. Many homeowners naturally retreat to trusted brands for guidance and for those choosing Quick-Step floors there’s a simple route to the very best in workmanship – appoint a Master Installer. Every Master Installer trained at the Academy is fully backed by the household flooring name and can provide an optional lifetime warranty on their workmanship. The Master Installer programme is open to anyone that has spent more than two-years in the floor installation industry, or that has completed the Academy’s foundation programme. Running over three days and featuring a mix of practical and classroom-based learning, the course ends in a full-day of assessment for a pass or fail qualification. This ensures that the high standards required to offer a manufacturer-backed workmanship warranty are met. “Quick-Step has become something of a beacon for quality and innovation and it’s a reputation that has been hard fought,” continues Lee. “By offering purchasers assurance through the Master Installer scheme, Quick-Step is providing an important service, but not one without risk and that’s why it’s so important that fitters holding the Master Installer scheme are the very best the industry has to offer.” www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Delivering in real-time

Diamond is a fitter’s best friend

Abingdon Flooring has launched its trade portal, bringing retail customers access to real-time stock levels, account management, orders and progress tracking.

Diamond Gripper from floorwise has been serving under carpet for almost a decade, providing a vice-like grip that refuses to let go, even on today’s deep pile carpet installations.

Featuring real time stock updates and order processing on its Stainfree, Love Story, Royal Wilton, SoftStep and Abingdon Carpet Tile Division brands, British carpet manufacturer, Abingdon Flooring, has launched a trade-only portal for its retailer network. Simplifying account management, the secure online platform makes the entire customer relationship management procedure easier. Live stock updates allow consumers to make an informed choice about their carpet or cushion vinyl flooring, allowing retailers to manage availability expectations at the point of sale. Millie Barlow, head of marketing for Abingdon Flooring, says: “Consumers expect to be served information immediately and so it’s important that retailers are in a position to manage this. Our portal allows retailers to provide information on expected delivery at the point-of-sale, helping to provide a high level of service that’s expected from independent retailers, whether it’s a Monday morning or Sunday afternoon.”

Whilst many fitters are still relying on a basic gripper for their installations, a product that is much thinner with significantly less pins and nails, savvy installers are turning to the legendary floorwise Diamond Gripper to do the job in a single, fuss-free pass. Diamond Gripper’s extra performance comes from 20% more pins than basic gripper and with more nails for extra stability, it’s a combination that doesn’t like to let go easily. The Diamond long pin option has the hold for even the deepest saxony pile and the resulting grip is so good that Diamond Gripper takes power stretched installs in its stride. Diamond Gripper is available in medium and long pin for either wood or concrete floors, and a dual-purpose version. Using a highquality 25mm-wide plywood construction, the gripper is available from floorwise stockists across the UK and Ireland. “Diamond Gripper really is a fitter’s favourite and for good reason,” says Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. “Like all floorwise products it’s great value and can be relied upon to deliver on its promise time and time again. With the popularity of deep pile carpets and super-thick underlays, the extra grip it provides is well worth paying just a little more for.” T 01509 673974

www.floorwise.co.uk

The portal also allows orders to be placed and progress of orders to be checked, again helping retailers to manage customer relationships throughout the entire buying process. Ensuring that its customers stay closely connected to account management is a key priority for Abingdon Flooring. Kährs Life Pure Oak

“As a British manufacturer, we are in the position to be able to negate some of the problems that can be found in the supply chain of other carpet companies,” continues Millie. “However, the efficiency advantages can be lost if retailers are reliant solely on a single order process. It’s a business priority to provide a more connected digital offer and our portal streamlines the entire account management process.” T 01274 655 694 32

Full marks at top school

Ball’s London tech rep

Specialist floor levelling compounds and adhesives from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used to install a mixture of hard-wearing, stylish textile and vinyl floorcoverings at Hampton School in South West London, befitting of the independent school’s prestigious status.

F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has appointed Paul Trubridge as technical representative for North London and parts of the surrounding counties of Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.

As part of the school’s ongoing development and investment programme, it was essential that the installation was in keeping with the standards set by one of the country’s top educators for young people. Starting in the sixth form areas, contractors Teddington Carpet Centre made a feature of the long and narrow atrium by mirroring the footprint of the mezzanine floor overlooking the breakout area onto the floor below, using a 50/50-split of Calgary Cement and Grey Forbo Flotex carpets. To achieve this, the old fibre-bonded carpet in the 250m2 room was first removed, revealing a sound, dry, concrete subfloor, which was primed using diluted Stopgap P131 general purpose primer before the application of F. Ball’s Stopgap Green Bag levelling compound. The fast-setting, low odour product was selected for its high strength, making it suitable for an area which will be subject to high levels of wear for years to come. Once the levelling compound had cured, Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive was used to secure the PVC-backed carpet. Over in the maths’ corridor, contractors had to remove fibre-bonded carpet tiles affixed to wooden parquet blocks, leaving behind old bitumen adhesive residues. To prepare the subfloor, F. Ball’s Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound, which is suitable for use over old adhesive residues, including bitumen and carpet tile tackifiers, was applied. Once cured, Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane was applied as a moisture test had indicated the presence of excess subfloor moisture, with relative humidity levels exceeding the 75% threshold for the project to progress without a moisture management solution. In its absence, subsequently applied adhesives and floorcoverings would have been liable to attack from the excess subfloor moisture, potentially resulting in floor failure. With the non-absorbent surface now in place, Stopgap P141 primer was used to promote the adhesion of a subsequently applied second layer of Stopgap 1200 Pro. Finally, the 100m2 area was finished with wood-effect luxury vinyl tiles, creating a warm environment, ready for eager students to traverse again. 34

As one of F. Ball’s regional technical representatives, Paul will provide expert technical advice, training and on-site assistance to flooring contractors, distributors and retailers across the region. This will include conducting site visits and producing casespecific reports advising on the best course of action for particular flooring projects. Paul’s career in the flooring industry goes back over 28 years, initially training as a carpet fitter, and includes nine years as a floor layer, including working selfemployed for five years. He has also worked as a sales representative for a flooring distributor for almost a decade, followed by eight years in a technical sales role for a subfloor preparation products manufacturer. Commenting on his appointment, Paul said: “To work for the market leader in the industry is the ultimate goal for me. I love the heritage of F. Ball and its adherence to its values, in particular the continuous development of products to help flooring contractors work to ever higher standards and its industry-leading support services. I’m really looking forward to being a part of that.” Paul and his wife, Pam, will celebrate their silver wedding anniversary this year. A keen musician, Paul plays piano and the guitar and listens to a wide range of music, and he keeps active by playing badminton and squash. T 01538 361 633

Flooring industry counts down to catch up, at CFJLIVE The flooring industry is preparing for CFJLIVE – its first official event in over a year - which takes place on Thursday 1 July. The free-to-attend global exhibition is the UK industry’s first ever virtual event, bringing together exhibitors from around the world. It will be broadcast live from a main stage – at FITA’s training centre in Loughborough – and from exhibitors’ showrooms, offices and factories around the world.

Billed as a ‘must-attend’ event for all sectors of the industry - including flooring contractors, retailers and specifiers, distributors, facility managers, housing associations and designers – CFJLIVE will bring together the industry in real time; crucially, visitors will be able to connect, share knowledge and discuss issues with industry experts within live meeting rooms, and via chat and individual meeting requests. The forum will include an overview of dementia and the challenges it poses - physical, emotional and economical. Readers’ survey results

The surge is strong, say our readers And with better quality sales and less price sensitive customers Flooring stores report a strong surge in demand in The Stocklists reader survey taken one month after the re-opening of non-essential retail across the UK. And optimism is running high for the year ahead. 58% of our retailers reported a “strong bounce-back” with another 30% saying there had been a good return to business. None of our respondents said they were disappointed by re-opening sales. The surge doesn’t just mean more business, it means better business according to our survey.

64% said they had seen a significant rise in the quality and value of their sales and 45% said consumers were less price sensitive at the moment. Asked to compare their current trading with the same period in “normal” 2019, more than half said trading volumes were “much better” and a quarter said they were a little better with a similar proportion reporting a similar performance to 2019. As a result, 75% of retailers said they expected to end the year with sales up by more than 10% on a typical year, of which a third said they expected to be more than 20% up, all assuming no further lockdowns. Only 6% are expecting to end the year down overall. We asked about pricing and almost all retailers (97%) said they had put up prices, with 30% saying they had made substantial increases. This follows significant and repeated price hikes from suppliers so we were interested to find out what retailers thought of those increases. A huge 86% of retailers believed the increases from manufacturers and suppliers were generally reasonable. “It’s a level playing field as we have had to pass on price increases but so have our competitors,” said a reader in Shropshire. But there was some criticism about exceptional increases in wood floors and the fact that wool ranges had been increased when the wool price was so low.

Suppliers are performing well And despite the well-publicised problems with stock, supply and service, suppliers got a vote of confidence from their customers. Only 14% of retailers thought suppliers had failed to cope well with the situation, 75% were generally happy and 10% praised the service they had received. However, many respondents said supplier performance had been mixed across different firms and one reader in Essex commented: “There have been some stock issues and long delays, but it’s generally okay. When there are delays, it tends to be months. But we have noticed lots of discontinued ranges that haven’t been notified to us. We feel they are running down stock before informing us and we are getting upset customers due to this.” Most retailers are welcoming suppliers’ reps back into their stores but 17% are still cautious and decline visits.

We didn’t ask about installation but one comment left by a reader in Northumberland flagged a key issue: “The current bounceback has highlighted how much we need new, good fitters in our trade. The biggest constraint on selling has been our fitting capacity - we are facing a very real crisis in the years ahead if we don’t bring some new blood into the trade.”

As we get back to business, we asked leading manufacturers and suppliers to show us what they have lined up for the selling season ahead... after taking the brakes off their marketing and product development programmes. Read on!... 40

Interfloor’s First Fully Sustainable Green Underlay Interfloor, Europe’s largest flooring and accessories manufacturer, is launching its first sustainable and ethically produced underlay this month. renu manufactured at the company’s UK site in Haslingden, Lancashire, is an innovative high-quality underlay combining Interfloor’s established features of luxury and comfort with a product that is driven by a vision to aim for 100% recycling in the manufacture and after life of a high-quality underlay. The company says its research showed:

88%

s aid they would prefer to choose a carpet underlay that is recycled/recyclable over one that is not.

91%

said they consider a product that can be recycled to be important.

86%

of respondents worry about the amount of waste going to landfill.

99%

of respondents recycle some if not all their household waste.

79%

of respondents aren’t aware of any recycled or recyclable underlays.

CEO John Cooper said: “We are all rightly concerned about how we treat our planet, and we know there is a genuine desire from consumers for sustainable products that genuinely meet the green agenda, so we set out to create an underlay that met those aspirations. “renu is without question the most sustainable underlay in our long history, and we were delighted we could match our company values with those of consumers in striving for this full circle of ‘no waste’. “We have used post-consumer waste, car tyres and plastic bottles in the manufacture of our underlay for many years. But we knew we could go even further and responding to this aspiration for a fully sustainable product, renu is made from 98% recycled materials, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, which means keeping waste from landfill and most importantly is 100% recyclable itself!

98% RECYCLED 100% RECYCLABLE

RENU GREEN CREDENTIALS The renu underlay is part of Interfloor’s Tredaire family and is made from 98% recycled materials, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, which means keeping waste from landfill and is 100% recyclable itself. The main body of the underlay is made of foam reclaimed from recycled soft furnishings. This foam is then mixed with a binding agent and subject to high temperature steam under high pressure. The backing is made from 100% recycled and unbleached paper and uses vegetable-based inks for printing. The film used on renu is made from an ethically produced, carbon-negative bio-based film that comes from sugar cane. The sugar cane actively captures CO2 from the atmosphere, whilst at the same time releasing oxygen – making this material not just green, but proactively green. This same recyclable bio-based film or 100% recycled plastic is also used for the packaging. At all times striving to use the most environmentally friendly options possible. Energy efficient renu has a high tog rating, which means it is a great insulator which will help keep houses warm and save energy. renu is made from high-density foam which will protect the pile of carpets from premature wear.

“We have made great strides in improving efficiency and increasing sustainability over the decades, but this new product is a game-changer, bringing together raw materials that we save from going to landfill with some that actually have a positive effect on the environment.” 48

Marketing insights Natural inspiration Nature not only instils a sense of wellbeing in us, but it is also a wonderful inspiration for texture and colour. Inspired by European oaks and American barnwood the Van Gogh collection by Karndean Designflooring has established itself as a firm favourite. Known for its wide selection of handcrafted oak designs, the collection is now available in both gluedown and rigid core format providing ultimate flexibility. Each design in the Van Gogh collection is inspired by nature and designed to reflect the intricate beauty of real timber. Additionally, the Grey Brushed Oak, Warm Brushed Oak and Golden Brushed Oak rigid core designs incorporate a natural wood grain emboss, accentuating the natural texture and aesthetics of the individual wood that inspired it.

“Our new Van Gogh rigid core designs are perfect if you’re looking to create a neutral backdrop.”

Supporting wellbeing through good product design is vital. So, all Karndean Designflooring products are low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) to protect air quality. Their Van Gogh rigid core collection also features an enhanced acoustic backing to reduce noise transfer, making it ideal for multistorey buildings as noise is reduced to floors below by up to 21dB .

ITC Natural Luxury Flooring, Eco collection

“Two thirds of adults reported feeling positive emotions when getting closer to nature and the outdoors, so it should be of no surprise that companies are using this as motivation for their new ranges.” Victoria Carpets have taken inspiration for their latest launch from the muted blue and green shades you would find in the British hedgerows. Royal Velvet is the new look, Royal Victoria. A 100% wool offer in their Natureborn Collection that has been recoloured and is available in 20 timeless shades. This is a carpet that will stand the test of time, both from its palette and natural finish. James Caldwell, sales director for Victoria Carpets & Design Floors, added: “We have all fallen in love with our homes again during the last 12 months and Velvet ranges have never been more in demand as we look to give our homes that luxury look. Velvet fabrics have been taking their share of interior trend reports for the last few years, so it is only natural that we have also seen a demand for consumers wanting the same opulence and glamour from their flooring as well as linking back to natural tones that help us feel calmer and connected with nature. “Velvet styles, although well known for their longevity and great value, also came with a somewhat traditional and perhaps old-fashioned look to them. We have been working tirelessly with our product development team to ensure that our new Velvet products are on trend with a look of modern yet timeless elegance.”

Consumers increasingly demand products which are made to environmentally and sociably responsible standards and Eco from ITC Natural Luxury Flooring fulfils this. For superb quality, outstanding craftsmanship and a sustainable use of materials, Eco collection is a perfect choice for residential and corporate hospitality locations where hard wearing, practicality and an environmentally responsible carpet is sought. Eco is made on looms operated solely by hand using 100% superior quality natural undyed wool, cotton and a natural latex backing. Eco comes in 4 and 5 meter widths, 6 muted colours and 3 different styles; Velvet, Loop and Rib, offering contrasting weave and texture, but all soft to the touch and with an opulent under foot feel. FLOORING FOCUS

Beating the “crisis” of the installation skills gap Face-to-face training has encountered exceptional challenges during the pandemic with facilities having to close and pivot to online learning where possible but the need for developing hands-on practical skills has never been greater. Ironically, as business bounces back after lockdown, the availability of sufficient numbers of skilled installers is holding back the ability of the sector to meet demand.

“This would be impossible without the support from industry manufacturers providing a wide range of tools, materials and equipment to help in delivery,” FITA has re-started training for apprentices in Loughborough

A retailer in the North East responding to our re-opening survey with the comment: “The current bounce-back has highlighted how much we need new, good fitters in our trade. The biggest constraint on selling has been our fitting capacity – we are facing a very real crisis in the years ahead if we don’t bring some new blood into the trade.” The industry’s training sector is now swinging back into action to come to the rescue. “Since the easing of lockdown restrictions from April, we have experienced a huge demand for our training courses and there is currently a waiting list in place,” explains Scott Cochrane, retail sales manager of Karndean Designflooring. “Even though there is an increased pressure on the industry at the moment with the high demand for flooring installation, we can see our retail partners and installers are in fact prioritising training and further development to help avoid a future skills gap. Karndean Designflooring expects to train 400 installers a year

three-day fitting courses designed to accommodate all levels, from basic, intermediate to advanced, as well as one-day workshops and is expecting to train over 400 installers per year. “Whilst the past 12 months within the training sector has been tough, FITA is finally able to say that apprenticeship delivery is now taking place at the training centre in Loughborough,” says FITA training manager, Shaun Wadsworth. In conjunction with Webs Training Ltd, FITA’s training options now include apprenticeship delivery in the East Midlands for apprentices, developing skills, knowledge and behaviours with the support of their employers. The apprentices will spend blocks of time at FITA over the next 3 years, working with their employers to build the necessary attributes a floorlayer would need to complete their apprenticeship. “This would be impossible without the support from industry manufacturers providing a wide range of tools, materials and equipment to help in delivery,” says Shaun.

“Even though there is high demand at the moment, our retail partners and installers are prioritising training and further development to help avoid a future skills gap.” “With the demand for herringbone laying patterns, bespoke installations and new rigid core formats being introduced, it’s important for floor fitters to have the opportunity to further develop their skills as there are so many opportunities with luxury vinyl flooring,” he said.” Having launched its new state of the art Karndean Training Academy last autumn, Karndean introduced eight spacious, purpose-built installation bays, dedicated 10m2 subfloor preparation area and open plan lecture space for group theory sessions. “This is the first step in a new route for FITA and something we are keen to grow, so if you would like more information about employing, supporting or becoming an apprentice in the floorlaying sector then please get in touch,” he said. ITFA - the International Textile Flooring Academy - was launched in 2018 as an online training and information resource for the carpet industry. The online training courses are suitable for anyone working within the industry – retail, manufacturing, representatives and installers – and are based around multiple choice questionnaires. An ITFA Certificate is available on successful completion. Current courses include: fibre-to-floor, an understanding the full cycle of wool and synthetic carpet construction; Fit-Me, an essential introduction to carpet installation; the Manufacture of Wool Carpets; The Manufacture of Handmade Rugs; and Practical Dyeing, an online course and introduction to fibre and yarn dyeing, dye chemistry and methods. FLOORING FOCUS

Floorcovering installation mastery Continuous learning is essential for anyone involved in installing floorcoverings. Apart from starting their careers with the skills and knowledge to meet customer expectations, flooring professionals need to update their knowledge and acquire new skills in order to respond to changes affecting the industry and retain a competitive edge, says Neil Sanders, technical director at F. Ball and Co. Ltd. He also explains how contractors can access the best free training available. Training has always been integral to ensuring the highest standards of professionalism in the flooring industry. Basic training should cover subfloor preparation, including the identification of different subfloor types and how they should be prepared, the use of repair and floor levelling compounds to create a smooth base ready for the receipt of new floorcoverings, and selecting adhesives based on compatibility with different floorcoverings. It should also include instruction on how to avoid common causes of floor failure, chief of which is still unmanaged subfloor moisture. Advancements in technology As well as gaining a good grounding in subfloor preparation and floorcovering installation, flooring professionals should strive to continuously improve and develop their knowledge throughout their careers. This has become particularly necessary as advances in technology have accelerated the development of subfloor preparation products and adhesives with advanced properties and applications. For example, advancements in adhesive technology have enabled F. Ball to create a specialist, solvent-free, high-temperature vinyl adhesive with pressure sensitive characteristics, which can hold floorcoverings in place over a wide range of temperatures. Similarly, combinations of new, fast-drying levelling compounds, waterproof surface membranes and adhesives mean that contractors can now install floorcoverings in as little as one day whereas it would have once taken up to three days. Armed with knowledge of these new fast track products, contractors are better-equipped to deal with increasingly demanding time constraints.

Choosing the optimum product Having a good knowledge of the range of new products available will also help contractors to choose the optimum product for a particular job and avoid compromising the finished appearance of an installation. For example, particular vinyl adhesives are recommended to avoid visible trowel serrations showing through vinyl floorcoverings. There are also levelling compounds that are designed especially to withstand heavy loads and high foot traffic and others designed to accommodate movements in flexible subfloors. Changes affecting the industry Contractors need to keep abreast of wider changes affecting the flooring industry too. For instance, calcium sulphate screeds are increasingly common in new builds and require specific treatment to ensure against floor failure. In such cases, traditional cement-based levelling compounds will not be suitable and the use of a compatible calcium sulphate-based levelling compound is recommended. Regular training helps contractors understand different materials and the benefits of using compatible products. In another change, the recent move to standards-based apprenticeships has also brought new training requirements. One hour of ‘off the job’ training must be completed for every four hours spent working by flooring apprentices, which more companies are giving opportunities to as a way to tackle their skills shortages. Accessing training Fortunately, there is no shortage of excellent training available to flooring contractors at little or no cost. Flooring industry training centres, such as Flooring Industry Training Association (FITA) training centre in Loughborough, offer a wide range of training courses, covering everything from subfloor preparation to estimating costs and quoting. Thanks to the apprenticeships levy, which came into effect in 2017, many flooring companies enrolling apprentices on training courses such as these can claim back up to 95% of the cost.

News Feature Rigid core formats will support demand post lockdown The UKs market leader in luxury vinyl flooring Karndean Designflooring is forecasting a trend for rigid core formats as homeowners continue to renovate post lockdown. “With independent retailers having re-opened their doors on 12th April, we are expecting rigid core formats to offer a lifeline of support to retailers facing pressure to service the demand of homeowners looking to achieve a beautiful floor ahead of the summer,” explains Stella Coyle, national retail sales manager of Karndean Designflooring. She said: “Being a familiar click and lock installation method, it means all levels of installers can fit rigid core floors, and not just those with specialist gluedown experience. It also gives homeowners the option to avoid the upheaval of extensive subfloor preparation and enjoy a beautiful LVT floor sooner.”

Van Gogh Golden Brushed Oak

Karndean’s rigid core format clicks and locks into place without the use of adhesive and its K-Core® technology means it can be fitted over most existing subfloors, floorboards or ceramics. With a range of colour matched scotia designs to add the perfect finishing touch, rigid core also offers enhanced acoustics to reduce sound transfer to rooms below.

Van Gogh Grey Brushed Oak

Karndean has recently updated its Van Gogh collection to introduce a new flexible multi-format approach with full length plank designs available in both a rigid core and gluedown fitting format. This includes four new small plank herringbone designs (28” x 7) - Grey Brushed Oak, Warm Brushed Oak, Golden Brushed Oak and Salvaged Barnwood – available in a mix of warm wood and cool grey tones.

Stella added the increased time spent at home during the pandemic and the current role of the home as a home hub and sanctuary space has left many of us looking to fall in love with our home again. She added: “Cosy living is a trend to look out for post lockdown and we expect to see more sophisticated parquet flooring which brings a guaranteed sense of elegance. GREAT BRITISH INNOVATION

FLOORINGBUSINESSNEWS Carpet imports surge into UK

5-year high for retail confidence

Carpet imports are surging back into the UK with figures for the end of March showing total values up by more than a third.

Consumer confidence for retail has risen to a five-year high and with a focus on quality. “Shoppers appear to be approaching the summer in a more positive mindset,” say analysts at IGD.

The statistics reverse a year-long slide in imports which started with the pandemic and ended with the chaos in ports due to logistics and container issues, just as demand was picking up. Belgian manufacturers – the biggest exporter of carpet to the UK – saw a 62% increase in March, the first year-on-year rise for 18 months, based on data compiled by The Furnishing Report. However, on a two-year comparison, Belgian imports remain down 14% while overall carpet imports into the U.K. in March were up by more than a third to £81.4 million which is higher on a two-year basis, up 15% on March 2019. Those overall figures are boosted by double-digit growth in imports from India, Turkey and China. Reports from across the furniture and floorcovering sectors say containers are now “flooding” into UK ports as logistics issues ease internationally.

Martin Stevens steps down Alternative Flooring has announced that Martin Stevens has decided to retire from his role of Sales Director with the company. MD Chris Brammall comments: “I could not let this announcement pass without comment from myself. Martin’s commitment to his team and Alternative Flooring will continue in the coming months, working with his successor to hand over the sales leadership of the business. “Our people are what makes our business thrive and we would very much like to thank Martin for his endless enthusiasm and hard work in his twelve years at the company. Martin is an integral and much valued part of the Alternative team and has contributed greatly to the success of our exciting and challenging brand. We would like wish him well in all his future endeavours,” said Chris. Martin is pictured far right with the directors Lorna Haigh (Marketing) and Tim Cater (Operations).

Shopper confidence increased to -1, the highest level in nearly five years (August’16). This compares to -11 this time last year, at the start of the pandemic. Towards the end of the month, shopper confidence increased to +1, following the further easing of lockdown restrictions, which included non-essential retail, the declining cases of COVID-19 and the rapid roll-out of the vaccination programme.

“Retailers should focus on capturing the additional spend that higher income shoppers are diverting to ‘trading-up” Simon Wainwright of IGD, said: “This optimistic sentiment should provide plenty of opportunity as restrictions begin to lift and shoppers are able to socialise. Retailers should focus on capturing the additional spend that higher income shoppers are diverting to ‘trading-up’,” he said.

Showbiz news for flooring Carpet is set to return to TV screens next year as the Carpet Foundation has been asked to help out with an episode of Interior Design Masters set to be filmed this June. The programme has proved a hit and attracts up to 2.5 million viewers per episode and up to 2.7 million viewers on BBC iPlayer. The show pits ten interior designers against one another with one lucky winner at the end of the series being awarded a life-changing contract. Carpet Foundation Patron Members will be carpeting rooms at a luxury country house hotel in Dorking.

Sales down and prices up at Balta One of Europe’s biggest carpet makers has confirmed price increases may have to continue amid depressed sales and supply chain issues. The turbulence across the market is exposed in the first quarter results of Belgian conglomerate Balta which reported declines of 8.2% in residential sales and 19.5% in its commercial business in the 3 months to March 2021. Helped by stronger rug sales, overall sales were down 4.5% to €152.6 million in the quarter, with almost a third of the reported drop down to negative currency movements.

FLOORINGNEWS Charity focus for flooring too

Sad loss of Michael Beeby

A £250,000 fundraising campaign has been launched to help develop and support people in the furnishing and flooring trade, and have some fun doing it.

Michael Beeby, a key figure in the successful story of Penthouse Carpets, has died aged 80.

“Step 2 It” is a key focus for 2021-22 for the The Furniture Makers’ Company, a City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry.

Michael joined Penthouse in 1974, becoming the company’s managing director in the mid 1990s.

Marketing manager George Cooper commented: “We’re not well known in the floorcoverings sector but we would like to be. Many people do presume that we are only furniture centric – one of the drawbacks of our name!”

He was then instrumental in the management buyout of Penthouse Carpets, which saw the Lancashire-based business become an employee owned company, something that was extremely important to him.

The Furniture Makers’ Company has a membership of 400 with many flooring industry organisations including Cormar, Headlam and Designer Contracts. The charity has been supporting the welfare of employees in the UK furnishing industry for more than 100 years and help anyone from the industry, past or present, who has fallen on tough times by awarding financial grants. This area has been particularly busy over the past year as you can imagine and the Company awarded a record number of financial grants. The “Step 2 It” campaign will be inspiring companies and individuals to organise sporty fundraisers in aid of the Company’s welfare acitvities. Its aim is to raise £250k, get the sector talking about its charitable support and also having fun together after a year of intermittent lockdowns. The Furniture Makers’ Company has developed a comprehensive and enriching education programme to develop, steward and inspire the next generation of designers, makers, retailers and leaders to make it stronger and more prosperous than ever before. The Company is also known for its recognition scheme, awarding its coveted Guild Marks – the Bespoke Guild Mark, Design Guild Mark (includes floorcoverings) and Manufacturing Guild Mark. Each Mark raises the profile of British design, innovation and manufacturing, helping to build a thriving industry for the future, as well as bringing prestige and publicity for award holders.

He retired in 1999 having built a reputation as a people person with a ready smile and a colourful personality while driving forward a successful business. “He had a real fondness for the carpet trade, a genuine passion for Penthouse Carpets, and a warmth for the people he worked with and he loved his job,” said his son Simon. “His larger than life personality will be sorely missed by the family.” Micheal Beeby died peacefully at his home in January and leaves behind three sons and 10 grandchildren.

The Flooring Innovation Awards all-stars!

2021

Increasing market share is a key issue as shoppers come back to the high street and awards can help products boost their consumer appeal. “The analysts all agree that consumers have the funds and the appetite to invest in their homes, and will be buying better quality this year,” says Bridgette Kelly, the award scheme organiser. “The question is which products will get their attention, which is where awards can help.” The National Flooring Innovation Awards set out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional in the sector. Award categories cover not only flooring products, but also recognise achievements in service, technology and marketing. Last year there were almost 100 submissions to the award scheme despite the pandemic and 40 shortlisted entries received the coveted Innovation Star. The judges then went on to select the Innovation Gold in each of 10 categories to receive the ultimate award. The awards scheme website is at www.flooringinnovationawards.com and gives full details of all the categories for 2021 and has an entry form for companies to make their first submissions to the judges. The award winners will be announced in late Summer, with the exceptional Innovation Gold titles to be handed out at The Flooring Show in Harrogate in September. www.flooringinnovationawards.com

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions

ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 64

Increase sales

• Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support

Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Vinyl Flooring Vinyl is a fast growing sector of the flooring market due to its durability at relatively low cost and huge range of designs available. Sheet vinyl and cushion floor by the roll are popular but the sector is dominated by LVT. In reality, most of the products sold today are “LVP”, Luxury Vinyl Planks, as wood decors are more popular than ceramics and stone but the term LVT is still used to cover the whole non-sheet market.

• Huge choice in terms of decors across wood, ceramic, stone and geometric designs

• I mpressive realism – not just in the design but infinishing

techniques that allow for wood knots you can feel, tiles you can grout, etc. See appearance options.

• Excellent performance in durability for high traffic areas, scratch resistance and cleanability. Vinyl also tends to be much more nonslip than natural materials. Some products are water resistant for bathrooms and kitchens.

Product options

• Dry back – a sheet or tile that needs to be fixed to the sub-floor using an adhesive.

• Self-adhesive – tiles with a peel-off backing paper to stick to the

sub-floor. Some tiles have adhesive overlaps to stick to each other rather than the sub-floor.

• Loose lay vinyl – tiles that simply drop onto the floor and rely on

a high friction backing to keep them in place – they demand a very sound, level sub-floor but are the easiset type of tile to lay or replace.

• Click – tiles that have a mechanical jointing system to attach to •W arm and soft to touch compared to ceramic and stone floors - and one another (like a locked tongue and groove system) and ‘float’ on a good heat insulator anyhow, and suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.

• Sound reduction – vinyl has neglible impact sound compared

to the tap/click of laminate and transmits less sound and vibration compared to solid floor.

• Considerably cheaper than the ‘real’ thing – both to buy and to fit – and tile/plank approach minimises wastage.

Installation

Installation preparation Vinyl requires a dry, sound, level subfloor as the relative thinness of vinyl and its light reflection performance will quickly reveal imperfections after installation as well as cause potential wear issues. Exisitng wooden/MDF floors may need a plywood underlay up to 6mm thick and then the joints will need to be skimmed or taped. Non-wood sub-floors will need a self-levelling screed to be laid to ensure a suitable base for the floor. A damp-proof membrane may be required depending on sub-floor moisture levels. However, new rigid core products are less flexible and can be laid more easily over existing floors – see Construction.

the sub-floor without being glued down. There are many proprietary versions of the click system which offer fast, clean installation and stability.

Appearance options Vinyl tiles and planks cover a hugh variety of sizes and shapes and can be mix-and-matched to achieve an infinite number of designs. Current fashions include extra wide and long planks for wood through to very small planks for wood. Border effects can be easy to achieve in LVT.

www.karndean.com

Other notable options include:

• Embossed – this is where the top clear layer of the tile has been

embossed to create a realistic texture that matches the style of the stone of wood decor. Registered embossed is the most authentic – the texture matches the design so that, for example, a wood knot or hand-scraped element in the wood design can be felt on the surface of the flooring.

• G routing and grooving – vinyl tiles can be laid with grouting inlay

www.myvictoria.co.uk

strips or beads of vinyl for addewd realism – and there are acrylic grouts that can be applied. In wood decors, planks are available with v-grooves or bevelled edges between planks for added realism.

LVT construction

Top coating – A polyurethane or aluminium oxide coating provides protection against scratches and stains and gives enhances anti-slip. Wear layer – This is a key layer - determining the performance and resilience of the product. A 0.3mm (12 mil) wear layer is a good for heavy wear areas. Commercial installations need 0.5mm wear layers or above with 0.7mm at the top end. The wear warranties and guarantees carried by products will be based on this thickness. Decor layer – This is the decor itself - in essence it is a paper- or filmbased photographic inkjet print. (A few LVT floors have the image printed directly to the surface of the floor but this implies less image definition and different wear characteristics.)

PVC Middle Layer(s) Fibre Glass Layer(s) PVC Base Layer

THE STOCKLISTS June 2021

PVC and fibre glass layers – The construction ‘sandwich’ can vary between products but a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers for strength and flexibility and fibre glass layers for structural stability may be used. Any click-system profile will be incorporated into these layers. Products often use a combination of recycled vinyl which is cheaper and virgin PVC which lasts longer and is more stable. Rigid core LVT has a solid, less flexible PVC layer with maximum stability which means it can be laid over exisiting, less even flooring without showing imperfections and therefore avoiding wear problems. Base (or backing) layer – The final high density PVC layer varies according to the installation requirement and is designed for taking adhesive or as an ‘underlay’ for loose-lay and click installations. 65

Stocklists: Flooring Fact Sheet from Interfloor

Flooring factsheet Eco-friendly underlay Sustainable underlay

Interfloor ‘Says NO to Waste’

renu® is a game changer. Interfloor’s new underlay meets the concerns of our modern world in reducing waste and being environmentally sustainable.

renu® is a sustainable, recycled carpet underlay and is without question the most sustainable underlay in Interfloor’s long history.

It’s made by bringing together raw materials that we save from going to landfill with some that have a positive effect on the environment.

We have used post-consumer waste, car tyres and plastic bottles in the manufacture of our underlay for many years. But with renu® we have gone even further responding to the aspiration for a fully sustainable product. It’s made from 98% recycled materials, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, which means keeping waste from going to landfill and is 100% recyclable itself! The main body of the underlay is made of foam reclaimed from recycled soft furnishings, this foam is them mixed with a binding agent and subjected to high temperature steam under high pressure. The backing is made from 100% recycled and unbleached paper and we use vegetable-based inks for printing. The facing film is made from an ethically produced, carbonnegative bio-based film made from sugar cane. The sugar cane actively captures CO2 from the atmosphere whilst at the same time releasing oxygen – making this material not just green, but proactively green. Let’s not forget, the point of underlay is that it feels great and prolongs the life of a new carpet and renu®, being made from highdensity foam and with a thickness of 9mm, is suitable for all areas of the home.

The in-store sales support available to renu® stockists

renu® stockists will be included in the online stockist locator on the Interfloor website.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels.

www.interfloor.com

The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet. Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home.

www.floorwise.co.uk

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Poor or old underlay will...

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Combination

Crumb

PU foam

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.

www.underlay.com

www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk

Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
