David Cormack, Marketing Director at Cormar Carpet Company said: “We are living in a time of high inflation, so Riva is perfectly timed for the market. Essential authenticity COREtec Floors is launching a revamped The Essentials collection with nature as the most important source of inspiration in this product line. Its authentic looks with soft earthy tones and warm, dark colours fit perfectly into any interior. The new COREtec The Essentials collection consists of carefully selected designs and natural textures centred around the appeal and warmth of wood. The broad palette of styles and colour tones allows you to easily create an interior that makes you, you. Going back to the original parquet look, the collection is made up of a wide range of planks and tiles in a variety of lengths and widths. With the unique “Multi Series” you can effortlessly create your own style with four different sizes. The layout you choose for the planks is completely up to you.
“ The Essentials collection consists of carefully selected designs and natural textures centred around the appeal and warmth of wood.” Several planks in this new collection are available with 2 bevelled sides, which means that only the length of the plank is bevelled. You get an incredibly authentic look as a result, and the difference with real parquet flooring is almost impossible to spot. The natural aspect of the collection is further enhanced with ‘Embossed in Register (EIR) technology’ to make the floor look like real wood; it also feels that way. Following the great success of the COREtec herringbone flooring in a smaller format, this collection has opted for larger planks measuring 91 cm by 23 cm. and The Essentials collection consists of 62 finishes in a variety of sizes. The new collection doesn’t just look utterly superb; it is technically perfect too. Thanks to the Soundcore technology and the integrated cork underlay, the floors have excellent sound insulation. In addition, the floors in this collection are extremely stable and hardwearing, so the energetic lifestyle of both children and pets won’t be a problem at all. The flooring is easy and quick to install. Its integrated click system does not require any glue, nails or cement.

FLOORINGNEWS Easy and eco beats plywood Lion Floor is the high-grade engineered alternative to BS 8203 compliant plywood that’s a more sustainable option but just as easy to install. Made in Finland by Finnish Fibreboard with a construction that eliminates the core gaps and overlaps of plywood, there’s no doubting that Lion Floor is a high-quality and reliable alternative to BS 8203 plywood that’s just as easy to install and more sustainable. Finnish Fibreboard manufactures Lion Floor from wood by-products, making it one of the most environmentally friendly boards produced. The wood by-product used is also sourced locally and from legally managed, sustainable forests. Most of the energy required by the mill is also produced with biofuel and modern evaporation technology is used to treat production wastewater, reducing the footprint of production. Combined with no added formaldehyde, Lion Floor comes with M1 and PEFC certification and can be easily and safely reused or recycled. The raw material for Lion Floor comes almost completely from PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified forests, so its origin and journey can be traced all the way from forest to finished product. The manufacturing process is based on a Finnish tradition spanning more than 80 years, which has been honed to perfection over the decades to meet the requirements of modern construction. Peter Jones, Finnish Fibreboard says: “If you’re looking for a sustainable BS 8203 compliant solution when installing vinyl flooring then Lion Floor really is the only solution. With locally sourced by-products as our material and low impact manufacturing, we make every effort to ensure that we do our best to preserve our environment. Ask yourself, is it possible to say that in confidence for the sheets of BS 8203 compliant plywood that you buy?” Lion Floor is not just a sustainable alternative, it is also just as easy to install. Pre-conditioned, so no wetting needed before installation, it’s just as easy to install as plywood. In fact, as it can be cut cleanly and quickly with a knife or saw, it’s arguably even easier to achieve a high-quality flooring installation with Lion Floor at your side. Fixed with screws or ring shank nails and suitable for screeds and feather compounds, there’s no longer a reason to choose BS 8203 compliant plywood. Lion Floor is the first hardboard panel to be designed and manufactured specifically for the flooring industry. It is also one of a very small number of fabricated underlays which can be used for LVT and other resilient floor coverings that meets British Standards and CFA guidance.

Get a better grip Since its launch, floorwise Diamond Gripper has become be the first-choice in high quality gripper for flooring professionals. And with the continued rise in demand for deep pile luxury carpet and thick PU underlay the need for a gripper that holds tight and fast is still proving worth the investment. Whilst many fitters are still relying on the false economy of basic gripper for their installations, savvy installers recognise that fantastic floors start with floorwise and the legendary floorwise Diamond Gripper allows them to do the job in a single, fuss-free pass. Diamond Gripper’s extra performance comes from 20% more pins than basic gripper and with more nails for extra stability, it’s a combination that doesn’t like to let go easily. The Diamond long pin option has the hold for even the deepest saxony pile and the resulting grip is so good that Diamond Gripper takes power stretched installs in its stride. Diamond Gripper is available in medium and long pin for either wood or concrete floors, and a dual-purpose version. Using a high-quality 25mm-wide plywood construction, the gripper is available from floorwise stockists across the UK and Ireland.
“ Diamond Gripper really is a fitter’s favourite and for good reason,” says Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. “Like all floorwise products it’s great value and can be relied upon to deliver on its promise time and time again.”

FLOORINGNEWS Sad loss of Dave Francis
The flooring industry has lost one of its leading figures with the untimely death of Dave Francis, sales director of Kellars, on April 28. “It is with very heavy hearts that we mark the sad passing of Dave Francis on 28th April 2022,” said Andy Duce, commercial director of Kellars. “This has been a huge shock to us and everyone in the flooring trade. Our thoughts are with his wife Julie and daughter Elizabeth.
Rugs recover lost treasure Venetian Dust expands Louis de Poortere’s well-established Atlantic Collection in a stylish rug design that celebrates the ethereal beauty of classic Venice palettes. Venetian Dust is available in four colourways – Padua Beige takes inspiration from the ashy silver greys of iconic stone architecture such as the St Mark’s Basilica, while Sunset Blue captures the reflecting palettes of a Venice night skyline on the famous canal waters. Tying in with back to earth colour trends, Gondola Brown and Rialto Gold bring optimistic warmth.
“We all have lots of fond memories of Dave and his character will certainly be missed by all. Not only was Dave a Director of Kellars but most importantly a friend to many he worked with too,” said Andy. “As Dave would say ‘Kellars started off as a Sunday League team’ and very sadly leaves us just as we are getting into the Premier League.” Dave Francis has been in the flooring industry for more than 30 years, starting as a sales rep with Yordale and Rolfe & West but he is best known for his 26 years at Hadfields where he became Commercial Director. He joined Kellars in 2018 as Commercial Director and was appointed Sales Director last year.
Alan Russell, UK Sales Director, comments on the new launch: “Visitors to the Buying Group National Floor Show will already have been treated to a preview of this exciting new rug style.
“Following the hugely successful introduction of Streaks and Monetti, Venetian Dust joins our Atlantic Collection with its unique ethereal, dusty abstracts that take their inspiration from rediscovered treasures,” he said. The Venetian Dust range is constructed using a jacquard flatweave in 100% polyester with a natural anti-slip latex. A choice of six versatile sizes, from 80cm x 150cm right up to 280cm x 360cm makes them accessible to homeowners looking to include their own slice of Venice in their home design. www.louisdepoortere.com info@depoorterelouis.com

Marketing insights Future fibres for consumer choice Studies have shown that incorporating natural designs into interiors has a positive effect on our wellbeing. As the largest single surface area, flooring can make an enormous impact. In this feature we explore the latest nature-inspired LVT and carpet collections. CRAFT by Kährs – Kilsbergen
Armed with over 160 years of knowledge and passion, Kährs have drawn from their expertise of working with wood to create CRAFT – a brand-new range of 6mm Click Luxury Vinyl Tiles, made up of three collections: Breeze, Nature and Nordic Classic. With an even greater focus on a natural appearance, the three collections include Kährs’ most popular existing LVT wood design floors, as well as floors in brand-new colours and designs:
“The Nature Collection includes seven floors in vibrant colours, inspired by the warm colours of dunes” The Breeze Collection consists of six gentle colours ranging from light sandy tones to darker shades. A calm grade wood design enhances the serene look of the floors, with minimal knots and cracks. The Nature Collection includes seven floors in vibrant colours, inspired by the warm colours of dunes, golden afternoon light and deep earthy tones. With a lively wood grading design, the floors feature visible cracks and knots. 38
The Nordic Classic Collection is the most rustic collection, including nine brand-new designs inspired by the landscape of northern Scandinavia. Prominent cracks and knots are skilfully enhanced by registered embossing for a truly authentic look and feel. All floors feature the trusted Kährs ceramic surface, making them resistant to wear and tear. The 5G Click joint guarantees easy installation, while the SPC rigid core gives the floors outstanding strength and stability. Sustainability continues to be at the forefront of people’s minds in 2022 and the Biophilic approach to design continues to grow, meaning that natural and rustic textures will still be a key trend in flooring. Harvey Maria’s Master Craftsman Series of authentic wood planks is a collection of beautifully hand-crafted designs with ultrarealistic wood grain textures. The unique matte, tactile finish means that they feel natural to the touch, and because the planks have gone through a process known as In Register Embossing. This means that the structure of the top wear layer follows the design exactly, so that all planks look and feel just like natural wood – if you can see the knots, you will be able to feel them too. “Ground-breaking” Flanders flooring initiative opens in Belgium The first edition of Flanders Flooring Days opened on 2 May 2022 with 10 top floor covering manufacturers in Belgium simultaneously opening their doors to international buyers and retailers from all over the world.
“it is essential to be innovative and creative – especially in developing higher added-value products. That is the essence of doing business in the flooring sector in a challenging market like this.”
The event is described as a “a groundbreaking and exclusive event for the worldwide flooring industry” and is an innovative addition to the established international trade fairs. The particpants represent the lion’s share of high-quality floor coverings – all major importers into the UK.
Belgium to meet market challenges with innovation and investment Belgium flooring companies have pledged to invest in innovation and creative product development to overcome a series of challenges that is holding back growth in the European market. “It is not easy to be successful in this market with many challenges that are making it difficult to grow,” said Fa Quix, the head of the Fedustria, Belgium’s textile and furnishing trade body at the launch of the Flanders Flooring Days marketing initiative. Supply chain issues and COVID have taken their toll but Mr Quix said that workforce issues were “really very troublesome” with hundreds of vacancies for skilled staff in the West Flanders area alone. “It is a new crisis and a difficult one to resolve but it is essential to be innovative and creative – especially in developing higher added-value products,” he said. “That is the essence of doing business in the flooring sector in a challenging market like this.” He said the manufacturers hosting Flanders Flooring Days had already demonstrated their commitment with €250m of investment over the last two years in developing their capability in the region. Answering a question from The Stocklists at the press conference in Ghent, Ruben Desmet – President Flooring at Unilin said: “We anticipated Brexit. We are all entrepreneurs and we set out to overcome the new barriers and have been successful – we see stability in the UK market which is very important to us. “We had no time to anticipate Covid and we were stretched to service our customers in the right way,” said Mr Desmet. “It has not been easy to maintain service in the perfect way we would wish but we will make it happen.” Ruben De Reu, product director at Modulyss, echoed the push for added-value products: “Successful business has to be much more about premium products and not the commodity end of the market. “We also believe that more and more sustainable products are the way forward – we do need to come up with more circularity in the flooring sector to make this a success,” he said. 42
Visitors to Associated Weavers are shown the latest innovations Associated Weavers, Balta, Beaulieu International Group, Coretec Floors, ITC, IVC Group, Lano Carpet Solutions, Modulyss, Ragolle, and Unilin Flooring opened their showrooms and production facilities to an international professional public. All the participating manufacturers are based in a limited geographical region in the West Flanders area of Belgium, at a short distance from each other and the region’s trade fair venue and specialist Kortrijk Xpo played a co-ordinating role. During the four day event, the participating companies provided an enlightening insight into the latest materials, applications, decors, and production techniques. Through presentations and individual contacts, professional buyers were informed about the latest trends and innovations in the sector to meet ever-higher customer expectations. www.flandersflooringdays.com THE STOCKLISTS June 2022
Brilliance and resilience from AW Polyester offers performance near that of nylon but with a price point closer to polypropylene – the sweet spot for retailers trying to add a little more to the value of their sales by offering a lot more to the consumer. All with a 20-year stain and wear warranty. And polyester is as bright and modern as nylon but softer, it is also bleach cleanable, just like polyester.
The Flanders Flooring Days marked the start of getting back into the business of face-to-face marketing and gave Associated Weavers the opportunity to reveal what’s been going on during the pandemic. At AW, the answer is “plenty!” “This was a great event for us, says Emmanuel Lioen, AW’s marketing & corporate communications manager. “It makes a huge difference to see people face-to-face, to see their reactions and everyone gets a real buzz out of touching the product while they are talking about it. “We saw more than 200 visitors over the four days – building on our strong relationship with customers and it was good to see so many new faces too,” he said.
And it’s backed by a strong environmental story – literally. All the Gaia ranges have AW’s award-winning ECO FusionBac, a premium backing made from 100% recycled PET plastic bottles.

And the timing was perfect for the showcase launch of AW’s major new polyester carpet range Gaia – one of the trade’s biggest introductions for 2022. AW MD Gavin Pugh said; “Covid held back product launches but we never stopped product development. Gaia is a really strong offer and the delay in being able to launch it fully has meant we have been able to fine tune it beautifully and build excellent levels of stock.” The marketing describes Gaia as a “brilliant carpet with a natural touch” – a play on words that captures the brilliance of its appearance alongside the strong performance credentials of solution-dyed polyester, and the soft feel of AW’s carefully engineered fibre.
“The market is challenging for retailers right now and this is the ideal product to give consumers a reason to purchase added-value with lots of great credentials and a strong story,” says Gavin. THE STOCKLISTS June 2022

Train to gain in flooring The skills gap in UK flooring is holding back growth for many businesses – in installation, for example, as reported on page 49, there are 30% fewer skilled fitters in the trade than there were 20 years ago. But the industry is rising to the challenge with several new initiatives to drive training forward faster. And the rollercoaster, post-lockdown market conditions may have an impact. Lee Thompson from Quick-Step
“While the pandemic had huge implications, the flooring industry has, by and large, weathered it well and many installers have never been busier,” says Lee Thompson of the Quick-Step Academy for Excellence in Flooring.
“During these busy times, quite naturally, training takes something of a back seat. However, as the cost-of-living soars, it’s likely that this will have an impact and we may well see periods when there’s time to seriously consider skilling up,” he says.
The Academy offers a large number of classroom and online courses centred around carpet care, cleaning and stain removal and is currently developing a course specifically for retailers which will be popular with our readers and we’ll keep you posted about its availability. Last year, F. Ball and Co. Ltd. launched the F. Ball Centre of Excellence, which was created by transforming the training and demonstration facility at the company’s Staffordshire headquarters at the same time as overhauling course content to offer more dynamic, hands-on learning experiences. Courses are completely free to attend and cover all aspects of subfloor preparation and floorcovering installation, with practical demonstrations and exercises using a range of high-performance F. Ball products. F. Ball has recently appointed a new head of training to lead the company’s industry-leading training provision facilitated by the F. Ball Centre of Excellence. Tim Green brings nearly 20 years’ experience in the flooring trade to the role, including managing his own flooring business and six years teaching floorcovering installation to apprentices at an FE college. Most recently, he was in charge of training at a leading floorcovering manufacturer. F. Ball’s Centre of Excellence
“As the cost-of-living soars, it’s likely that this will have an impact and we may well see periods when there’s time to seriously consider skilling up,”
“A more compelling service for customers and knowledge that makes a real difference to working practices – it’s a great blend for success,” adds Lee.

At the Flooring Industry Training Association (FITA), one of the great successes post-pandemic has been the opportunity to develop new courses and support the requirement for floor layer training in the UK. “We knew that there would still be a strong requirement and desire for training, but the response to FITA courses over the past 12 months has been staggering, seeing more people through the doors of FITA Loughborough than in any previous year, something which makes us both proud and grateful,” says Shaun Wadsworth of FITA.

SPECIAL ARTICLE – TRAINING – F.Ball & Co. Ltd.
Floorcovering installation mastery Increasing customer expectations for finished flooring installations, especially for particular types of floorcoverings, such as LVTs, means that flooring professionals need to continuously update their skills and knowledge. Tim Green, head of training at F. Ball and Co. Ltd., explains the importance of training and maintaining a competitive advantage and how to access the industry’s best provisions for free. Training has always been integral to ensuring the highest standards of professionalism in the flooring industry. Basic training should cover subfloor preparation, including the identification of different subfloor types and how they should be prepared, the use of repair and floor levelling compounds to create a smooth base ready for the receipt of new floorcoverings, and selecting adhesives based on compatibility with different floorcoverings. It also needs to include instruction on how to avoid common causes of floor failure, chief of which is still unmanaged subfloor moisture. Advancements in technology As well as gaining a good grounding in subfloor preparation and floorcovering installation, flooring professionals should strive to continuously improve and develop their knowledge throughout their careers. This has become particularly necessary as advances in technology have accelerated the development of subfloor preparation products and adhesives with advanced properties and applications. For example, advancements in adhesive technology have enabled F. Ball to create a specialist, solvent-free, high-temperature vinyl adhesive with pressure sensitive characteristics, which can hold floorcoverings in place over a wide range of temperatures. Similarly, combinations of new, fast-drying levelling compounds, waterproof surface membranes and adhesives mean that contractors can now install floorcoverings in as little as one day whereas it would have once taken up to three days. Armed with knowledge of these new fast track products, contractors are better equipped to deal with increasingly demanding time constraints. THE STOCKLISTS June 2022
“Training has always been integral to ensuring the highest standards of professionalism in the flooring industry.” Choosing the optimum product Having a good knowledge of the range of new products available will also help contractors to choose the optimum product for a particular job and avoid compromising the finished appearance of an installation. For example, particular vinyl adhesives are recommended to avoid visible trowel serrations showing through thin vinyl floorcoverings. There are also levelling compounds that are designed especially to withstand heavy loads and high foot traffic and others designed to accommodate movements in subfloors of metal and wood. Changes affecting the industry Contractors need to keep abreast of wider changes affecting the flooring industry too. For instance, calcium sulphate screeds are increasingly common in new builds and require specific treatment to ensure against floor failure. In such cases, traditional cement-based levelling compounds will not be suitable and the use of a compatible calcium sulphate-based levelling compound is recommended. Regular training helps contractors understand different materials and the benefits of using compatible products. In another change, the move to standardsbased apprenticeships has also brought new training requirements. One hour of ‘off the job’ training must be completed for every four hours spent working by flooring apprentices, which more companies are giving opportunities to as a way to tackle their skills shortages. Accessing training Fortunately, there is no shortage of excellent training available to flooring contractors at little or no cost. Flooring industry training centres, such as Flooring Industry Training Association (FITA) training centre in Loughborough, offer a wide range of training courses, covering everything from subfloor preparation to estimating costs and quoting. Thanks to the apprenticeships levy, which came into effect in 2017, many flooring companies enrolling
apprentices on training courses such as these can claim back up to 95% of the cost. Additionally, some manufacturers of subfloor preparation products and adhesives (and some floorcovering manufacturers) offer training courses on how to use their products at no cost to contractors. F. Ball has redesigned and reconfigured the training and demonstration facility at its Staffordshire headquarters, and restyled course content to offer a more dynamic, hands-on learning experience. Accordingly, the new state-of-the-art training facility has been relaunched as the ‘F. Ball Centre of Excellence’ to reflect its aim to help flooring professionals keep up-to-date with the latest advancements in product technology and stand out from the competition amidst increasing customer expectations. As such, evidence of completing a course at the F. Ball Centre of Excellence is proof of having received the most advanced training and a commitment to delivering the highest flooring standards. Training programmes, which run year-round, are led by experts from within the company, cover subfloor preparation, moisture management and control and adhesive selection. These include specialist courses for both apprentices and seasoned professionals and a three-day course on achieving optimum results when installing LVTs, and a brand-new three-day sheet vinyl course. Free to attend As a market leader in flooring preparation products and adhesives, F. Ball believes it has a responsibility to promote industry standards and best practice and, by extension, the positive reputation of the flooring industry. This is why flooring contractors of any skill level can take part in training courses at the F. Ball Centre of Excellence for free. T 01538 361633 www.f-ball.com/training 47

SPECIAL ARTICLE – TRAINING – Bostik
Why you can’t afford to ignore training One of the top reasons businesses experience staff shortages is due to the lack of skilled and experienced workers: today there are over 30% fewer floor installers than there were 20 years ago. For the flooring industry, it is more important than ever to not just recruit new people, but also to retain that talent. When there seems to be a constant backlog of demand, some companies can be reluctant to sacrifice time that could be spent in branch or on site, for time in a classroom. Yet whether it’s new techniques, products or regulations, the industry changes and adapts, so training should be a key part of the job. Formal training leading to qualifications can require significant commitment over a year or more. However, learning new skills at a training centre or with a manufacturer can take place over a day or two, and there is often the flexibility to create a bespoke session to fulfil specific needs. This includes training via webinars or online platforms, which can be made accessible on-demand from anywhere. When choosing which training to sign-up for, you should start by carefully examining the course’s content. Formal qualifications will usually involve some level of practical or written evaluation, with concrete proof that knowledge and skills have been attained. Other courses consist of a series of product demonstrations with little opportunity for the trainees to get hands-on. In these circumstances, you have to ask yourself, are you really being trained?
“Manufacturers want to see their products distributed and used in the best possible way, and therefore would rather see trainees fail in the training room rather than out in the field.” Online training can offer greater levels of depth than ever before, with live presentations and Q&As providing an excellent opportunity to sharpen your skills. But, to get the most out of a course, trainees need opportunities to get hands-on: to learn, try, fail, understand why and how, try again, and finally succeed, enabling them to walk away brimming with confidence. Manufacturers want to see their products distributed and used in the best possible way, and therefore would rather see trainees fail in the training room rather than out in the field. The Bostik Academy training centre offers a mix of blended learning for distributors and installers, including hands on practical training as well as interactive seminars and live stream webinars, providing the flexibility to create a bespoke session to fulfil a team’s specific needs.

Get set to star
“The challenging economic market that lies ahead means that the smarter, added-value products are going to be the the ones that win out,” said Flooring Innovation Awards organiser Bridgette Kelly. “Winning an awards means that new, innovative products and services get noticed by buyers across the industry and earn the recognition they deserve,”she said. The National Flooring Innovation Awards sets out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional in the sector. Award categories cover not only flooring products, but also recognise achievements in service, technology and marketing. Last year there were more than 100 submissions to the award scheme despite the challenges of Covid-19 and 34 shortlisted entries received the coveted Innovation Star. The judges then went on to select the Innovation Gold in each of 10 categories to receive the ultimate award. The awards scheme website is at www.flooringinnovationawards.com and gives full details of all the categories for 2022 and has an entry form. National Flooring Show Meeting the challenge ahead Trend review from the showtime in Solihull The flooring business is braced for the impact of inflation on consumer confidence in the months ahead, but smart product development has put the sector in a strong position to secure as much value from the market as possible in this tough environment. During the pandemic, manufacturers were able to fine-tune those product launches that were held back and focus on the ranges that were going to perform best in the tight market ahead – mid-range products with added value performance and appeal, plus upmarket launches that justify a premium price. Strong order books throughout last year and well into 2022 have helped support the cost of the new introductions. “Most manufacturers have had unprecedented demand in the last two years and it will help us through the months ahead, provided it doesn’t go on too long,” one leading manufacturer told The Stocklists in Solhull. But another supplier commented that the strong start to 2022 had stalled. “There’s no doubt that in the last few weeks it has gone quiet out there,” he said. But Gavin Pugh of Associated Weavers expressed the mainstream view of the top manufacturers. “It is going to be a challenging summer for some but there are still many discerning buyers out there who are prepared to spend if the right products are available to them – products which can command a better margin for the retailer,” he said. The following pages (and some more next month) show what’s on offer and there is plenty that hits the target for consumer appeal and added value profit enhancement.
There are still many discerning buyers out there who are prepared to spend if the right products are available to them – products which can command a better margin for the retailer
Carpets trends After some stagnation in styles before and during the pandemic, there are some clear new trends emerging in carpets. Soft is still selling strongly but harder, denser twists are returning, much to the delight of many retailers and to manufacturers eager to regain more share of the downstairs flooring that has been lost to LVT. Polyester is coming through strongly as the man-made fibre of choice - it’s always had better performance than polypropylene and now that the price has narrowed between the two fibres, manufacturers are keen to take advantage of PE’s extra benefits.
New colour trends are also very clear. Greys are warming up and giving way back to beige shades to some extent - but it’s not a return to the past entirely as calm pastel shades of greens and blues are very evident everywhere and this years most distinctive colour coming through is gold - in both pastel and bold options. Rugs have also taken the cue to cheer us all up with some of the brightest designs doing well and more quirky, playful designs as well as a strong tilt towards arty abstract options. LVT and vinyl trends Vinyl suppliers continue to ride the popularity of parquet but aren’t resting on their laurels. New range launches are a credit to the designers ingenuity to keep the sector fresh in ever more creative styles. Urban slates and concretes are widening the appeal and some new eye-catching options in marble have been adding to the appeal.

Super sustainability John Cooper, CEO, is pictured with Territory Sales Manager Ellie Redfern “We have had this concept on the back burner for a while, just waiting on the ideal opportunity to bring it to market,” says Interfloor Sales Director Gary Cowley. “Independent retailers are very good at selling underlay alongside their carpet sales and this new range gives them a great opportunity for added-value sales that delivers both an improved customer experience and a higher cash margin for the retailer’, he said.
We have had this concept on the back burner for a while, just waiting on the ideal opportunity to bring it to market, Sharing the limelight with this new collection, is the supersustainable renu range – an underlay of such impeccable environmental credentials that it was selected to cover many square metres at the UN’s COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow last year.

Performance and personality Victoria Carpets Victoria just looks so good these days! – and if you don’t believe me, ask the judges at the BGNFS event who gave the company their prestigious best stand award at the show. But it is not just a cosmetic thing, although the stylish new branding and visual personality that the group has rolled across their identity and marketing is one of the most modern in the sector. It is that Victoria has overhauled its whole approach to the market. It has taken the breadth of its offerings across man-made and natural carpets, vinyl and LVT and re-configured it into a much more accessible, engaging and organised portfolio. “Each time we come up with a new idea or offer, we think long and hard about how we can make it easier for the retailer to deal with and sell, and for the consumer to understand and purchase,” says Debbie Turvey, marketing manager at Victoria. Streamlined ranges, colour-coded information, meaningful icons, coordinated web content and creative photography are all part of the mix that help retailers and consumers navigate the growing range of popular products. And it is growing, with a busy programme of product development. BGNFS visitors saw a couple of great examples. New Tudor Twist takes over the pedigree of the company’s flagship Victoria Twist and then some, with two qualities in Classic and Regal and a super choice across 36 colours with all the latest warm tones and on-trend pastels. All presented on a stylish new lectern.

In wool loop, the popular Habberley range has extended from its classic styling to two new designs in herringbone and a ridge pattern and with six new colours including subtle pastel blues and greens and warmer greys.
Each time we come up with a new idea or offer, we think long and hard about how we can make it easier for the retailer to deal with and sell, and for the consumer to understand and purchase. For Victoria Designflooring, the company is delivering a huge project to make its LVT offer as smart as possible with a combined offer across what were the Universal and Distinctive ranges. An impressive swing-arm display brings all that LVT together for the first time – ideal for range comparison and trading up. All this development is closely mapped across to the consumer websites and retailer portal so that online and in-store, everything adds up – and looks greater than ever! T 01562 749300

Furlong’s a firm favourite Furlong Flooring Furlong became a firm favourite for retailers during the challenges of the last two years for building unprecedented levels of stock and demonstrating its ability to deliver it time after time. “We had already refined the product portfolio to cover all the options that generate the best-sellers retailers rely on and our online portal kept us open 24/7,” says Neil Valentine. “Our commitment in the pandemic was to accelerate our manufacturing for stock to make sure we could always deliver, and the strategy has gone from strength to strength.” As a privately-owned UK company, Furlong were able to take the challenging decision to invest heavily in stock at a time when the market was still uncertain. But as the extent of the lockdown demand became evident, retailers released the value of this resource to respond to the opportunity of soaring consumer demand. “The flooring industry is all about reliability and service to support those sales across carpet, vinyl and LVT sectors for our retailers,” says Neil.
The flooring industry is all about reliability and service to support those sales across carpet, vinyl and LVT sectors for our retailers.
The latest ranges pictured with Neil Valentine Furlong launched two new eye-catching ranges at the BGNFS event with Henley & Marlow, two qualities of a fashionable quality loop with a wool-like look and feel. Seven colours are available in both a honeycomb design and a structured loop texture. For a PP twist with a similarly natural handle, new Renaissance has a nice, tight texture in 12 colours to create the sort of “proper carpet” range that retailers love and consumers trust. Adding to the appeal, both these new introductions benefit from Furlong’s award-winning Combi-bac soft touch backing which makes samples feel so much more friendly and eases installation. Durham by design Hugh Mackay Durham Cathedral has had a facelift! At least the version of it that appears on the famous Hugh Mackay logo has, and it is now looking a lot sharper – just like the whole product presentation at this famous wool house. Hugh Mackay has re-branded in some style, moving away from black to a trendy teal, using lots of circular graphics and modern typefaces which reflects the best trends in the fashionable interior design sector. Meanwhile, they have been busy behind the scenery with the major launch of Durham Tweed, an elegant partner to the flagship Durham Twist which offers appeal “from country retreat, to urban chic.” This UK-made 80/20 tweed exudes quality and is available in 16 colours and 4 & 5m widths to cover all the bases – a certain best-seller for years to come. T 01429 892555 www.hughmackay.co.uk New Durham Tweed
As fresh as it gets Q by Hugh We love the new concept of Q by Hugh which Hugh Mackay previewed at Harrogate and delivered to Solihull in bold new branding that shouts style to what is almost certainly a different demographic of consumers than the traditional clientele. “We’ve taken a really fresh approach in a modern/retro style that makes a statement to a younger audience,” says Keith Morgan of Hugh Mackay (pictured bottom left), “and this will get noticed in a retailer as something really different.” The logic was to pull together a package of the company’s most popular man-made products with lots of choice from plains to plaids, stripes to animal prints that all fit on one tombola. It takes up a small space but makes a big impact in your store! T 01429 892555 www.hughmackay.co.uk

Riding a wave of colour Abingdon Flooring “I prefer living in colour” is the famous quote from artist David Hockney which was splashed across the back wall of the Abingdon stand, and so says the company’s sales director, Martin Peace. “I think we’re all a little greyed out after the last couple of years aren’t we,” he says. “But I think consumers are getting more savvy about colour and looking for something a little less neutral. Colour is coming back!” To emphasise the strength of Abingdon’s colour credentials, the range displays across the stand at the BGNFS event were rearranged to show a wave of colour, demonstrating the choice that is available throughout the company’s portfolio of carpets. Harrogate saw the debut of the intensely colourful Velveteer range in the luxurious Love Story collection. Now Abingdon has carried through the theme by selecting some of the best colours from Velveteer and rolled them into two new product launches at Solihull at competitive price points in their Stainfree collection. Finesse and its heavier, denser sister product, Caress, share a colourbank of 18 options to provide competitive choices and feature the growing popularity of softer pastels including warmer greys and greens with the popular golds and mustard.
To emphasise the strength of Abingdon’s colour credentials, the range displays across the stand at the BGNFS event were rearranged to show a wave of colour.
The polyester product Wild Silk which was also revealed at Harrogate extends the concept into a confetti collection of colour and texture in 12 options which is now going out with sampling across the UK. And wool is never forgotten at Abingdon under the Wilton Royal brand in new ranges including Charter Berber Deluxe, a lovely 80/20 with an open pile that shows off its colour including fashionable golds and terracotta. A sister loop is in development to marry up with the colourbank but in a 3-ply 100% wool construction in three designs. Finally, New Royal Windsor adds a contemporary new tight rib design to this popular 100% wool range. T 01274 655662

Perfect positionning Associated Weavers Associated Weavers have been busy moving each of their key product segments into a perfect position to give retailers that extra impetus to get a better sale from each customer opportunity in a challenging market. Major developments in both the group’s carpet portfolio and its LVT offer are backed by the kind of savvy marketing that AW is famous for – and by stocking levels that provide the all-essential reliability that retailers crave. A showcase in Solihull was the full launch of the new polyester Gaia collection – a major event in the carpet sector which sets the agenda for this increasingly popular fibre. We report on this in more detail on page 43.
W’s new Gaia brand sets A the agenda for polyester, offering the consumer the perfect balance of product, performance and price.
The Invictus collection of carpets continues to build its market share for its comprehensive portfolio of performance-oriented comfort in next-generation polypropylene. And AW is also promising significant developments in its Vivendi range with plans to add two new ranges to this solution-dyed nylon alongside a recolouring to the latest trends, reinforcing its credentials as a bright, cheerful and robust carpet for the most demanding families – “the best a house can get” as it’s resilient, wear resistant & bleach cleanable and comes with a wear and stain warranty of 25 years. More of these plans will be revealed at Harrogate later in the year.
AW MD Gavin Pugh presents Gaia
Right mix for the market The Invictus LVT collection has turned into a huge success story for Associated Weavers and its loyal retailers. “It is no accident that this collection has turned out to be exactly the right mix for the market right now,” says AW managing director Gavin Pugh. “We worked very closely with retailers to get it right from the outset and it keeps hitting the mark.”

Toastrack
Parquet is king, driving excellent sales, and more options are coming but the breadth of Invictus LVT offer – 103 options and growing - means retailers can match consumers’ needs across the spectrum for wood and tile. The centrepiece of the promotion is the Invictus in-store display – now remodelled and manufactured in the UK to create a 3m wide unit which integrates graphics, samples and the class-leading Invictus interactive display with room visualisation. Adding value to quality Cormar Carpet Co. Cormar has started 2022 with two exceptional launches that match the market needs for added-value carpets that emphasise quality alongside a competitive price. Visitors to BGNFS saw the Linwood range, a fine tenth gauge premium carpet that first arrived in January in 16 heather and plain colours, from classic neutrals to the bolder tones of teal and gold, available in both 4 & 5m widths. “Linwood has got off to a great start,” says marketing director, David Cormack. “It has a softness to the yarn, but in a dense, firm construction that can go anywhere in the house.” The latest newcomer is Riva, a luxurious deep-pile carpet in a modern palette of 16 plain colours which builds upon the established popularity of Cormar’s Sensation ranges. Riva has been engineered to combine the firmer handle of Cormar’s harder-wearing easy clean carpets, together with the softness of a multi-filament yarn. Cormar points out that more than half of all orders placed are done so via their digital Trade Portal. The company’s class leading, real time interface was well established before the pandemic but has become increasingly popular as the company continues to invest in its functionality and the accuracy of the logistics information it delivers. FLOORINGBUSINESSNEWS Flooring inflation still surging Retail price inflation for flooring continued to rise in April with the latest data from the Office for National Statistics showing flooring price inflation rose from 7.4% to 9% - the second highest rate over the last year. The rate for carpets and rugs was up 1% from 5.6% to 6.5% while inflation for other floorcovering sectors fell back a little from 17.9% to 15.5%, the second successive fall. The ONS reported that inflation in the furniture sector overall continues to run at high levels but fell a little in April from 17.2% to 16.5%.
Consumer confidence “in freefall” Consumer confidence has hit an all-time low with major purchase decisions for things like furniture and flooring falling still further, according to leading retail analysts GfK. “The GfK Consumer Confidence Barometer recorded a headline score of minus 40 in May, the worst since our records began in 1974,” says GfK’s strategy director Joe Staton. “This means consumer confidence is now weaker than in the darkest days of the global banking crisis, the impact of Brexit on the economy, or the Covid shutdown,” he said. “The outlook for consumer confidence is gloomy, and nothing on the economic horizon shows a reason for optimism any time soon.” The Major Purchase Index asks consumers if now is a good time to buy major household good like furniture, flooring and appliances. It has now fallen in each of the last six months to reach this month’s index of minus 35.
“The YouGov/Cebr Consumer Confidence Index remains in free fall,” said Kay Neufeld, head of forecasting at Cebr.
“The continuing inflationary environment is likely to impact consumer spending during the year, thereby suppressing underlying volumes and revenues in the industry,” it said. Profits are holding up well though as Headlam builds on its higher margin portfolio and the group said the commercial sector continued to show recovery from its severely impacted position during the COVID-19 restrictions. In the four months so far this year, commercial sector revenue for the group was up 5.8% against the prior year period on a likefor-like basis. Chris Payne, Chief Executive, said: “With our comprehensive growth focused strategy which is demonstrating progress, we believe we are well positioned despite the expected weakening in the residential sector of the marketplace. We look forward to the busier trading months ahead.” Headlam reported “encouraging progress” in gaining new customers and in growing sales through its online channels and its expanding trade counter network.
ScS builds flooring offer ScS, one of the UK’s biggest furnishing retailers, looks set to build on its flooring business with the creation of a specific executive role for the sector and the appointment of a high profile individual to drive it forward. Ex-Allied Carpets boss Dean Weston has been appointed to the new role of Flooring Director at ScS which has 99 stores across the UK. Flooring currently accounts for about 10% of its £150m turnover. Dean Weston has 30 years experience in home furnishing which includes senior roles in Bathstore, MFI, The Range and Habitat.
“Worryingly consumers are also becoming less optimistic on the outlook for business activity going forward, which is likely driven by greater anxiety about a potential recession further down the line,” Neufeld said.
Allied Carpets went into administration in 2009, closing over 140 stores, and Mr Weston, who was operations director for the group, was part of a rescue project which re-opened some 20 outlets as Allied Floors in 2011.
YouGov collects consumer confidence data every day, conducting over 6,000 interviews a month. Respondents answer questions about household finances, property prices, job security, and business activity, both over the past 30 days and looking ahead to the next 12 months.
Flanders event “not a challenge to Domotex”
Headlam flags “softening” sales Headlam Group has reported a small drop in residential sales and warned that consumer spending is likely to be impacted further by inflationary pressures as the year goes on. In a trading update ahead of its AGM, the leading European flooring distributor said its overall performace was still in line with market expectations but that residential sector revenue was down 0.5% for the first four months of this year compared to last year. “Q1 2022 revenue was broadly in line with plan, followed by a slightly weaker performance in April 2022 due to overall softening in the residential sector and some delayed orders,” says Headlam’s statement.

The “ground-breaking” Flanders Flooring Days event in Belgium in May is not a challenge to Domotex, say particpants. Ten top flooring companies teamed up for the new four-day, face-to-face event hosted in showrooms and factories across the West Flanders region. Buyers and retailers from 55 countries attended presentations and tours in the marketing initiative that follows two years of Covid cancellations by Domotex - the world’s largest flooring fair which is normally hosted in Hannover each January.
“During the Covid crisis everything was online and that does not work well for flooring, customers have to see it and feel it,” said Fa Quix, the head of the Fedustria, Belgium’s textile and furnishing trade body. We need to have real-life contacts.” “But we see this event as complimentary to the other trade fairs - they will not disappear. Domotex is at a different time of year and we will still particpate,” he said.

FLOORING FACTSHEET
ADHESIVES SELECTION CHECKLIST
The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time:
Subfloor:
The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked.
What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard.
Odour:
While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces.
Low odour, solvent-free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.
Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.
The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation.
Special Performance: Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.
Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments.
Strength:
Air Quality and the Environment:
Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured.
The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.
Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but this criteria must be checked where appropriate.
ADHESIVE TYPES Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticised PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors. Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels. Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive. Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.
FEELING THE HEAT? RELY ON F48 PLUS. F48 PLUS fibre-reinforced, high temperature grade vinyl adhesive provides high resistance to heat and PVC plasticisers, giving you reassurance when fitting in heavily glazed areas subject to direct heat. Suitable over underfloor heating systems, it offers excellent grab with fast drying properties that allow floorcoverings to be installed from just 5 minutes.

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. THE STOCKLISTS June 2022
Flooring factsheet Vinyl Flooring Vinyl is a fast growing sector of the flooring market due to its durability at relatively low cost and huge range of designs available. Sheet vinyl and cushion floor by the roll are popular but the sector is dominated by LVT. In reality, most of the products sold today are “LVP”, Luxury Vinyl Planks, as wood decors are more popular than ceramics and stone but the term LVT is still used to cover the whole non-sheet market.
Benefits
• Huge choice in terms of decors across wood, ceramic, stone and geometric designs
• I mpressive realism – not just in the design but infinishing
techniques that allow for wood knots you can feel, tiles you can grout, etc. See appearance options.
• Excellent performance in durability for high traffic areas, scratch resistance and cleanability. Vinyl also tends to be much more nonslip than natural materials. Some products are water resistant for bathrooms and kitchens.
www.bramptonchase.co.uk
Product options
• Dry back – a sheet or tile that needs to be fixed to the sub-floor using an adhesive.
• Self-adhesive – tiles with a peel-off backing paper to stick to the
sub-floor. Some tiles have adhesive overlaps to stick to each other rather than the sub-floor.
• Loose lay vinyl – tiles that simply drop onto the floor and rely on
www.invictus.co.uk
a high friction backing to keep them in place – they demand a very sound, level sub-floor but are the easiset type of tile to lay or replace.
Click – tiles that have a mechanical jointing system to attach to • Warm and soft to touch compared to ceramic and stone floors - and • one another (like a locked tongue and groove system) and ‘float’ on a good heat insulator anyhow, and suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.
• Sound reduction – vinyl has neglible impact sound compared
to the tap/click of laminate and transmits less sound and vibration compared to solid floor.
• Considerably cheaper than the ‘real’ thing – both to buy and to fit – and tile/plank approach minimises wastage.
Installation
Installation preparation Vinyl requires a dry, sound, level subfloor as the relative thinness of vinyl and its light reflection performance will quickly reveal imperfections after installation as well as cause potential wear issues. Exisitng wooden/MDF floors may need a plywood underlay up to 6mm thick and then the joints will need to be skimmed or taped. Non-wood sub-floors will need a self-levelling screed to be laid to ensure a suitable base for the floor. A damp-proof membrane may be required depending on sub-floor moisture levels. However, new rigid core products are less flexible and can be laid more easily over existing floors – see Construction.
Top Coating Wear Layer Decor Layer
the sub-floor without being glued down. There are many proprietary versions of the click system which offer fast, clean installation and stability.
www.karndean.com
Appearance options Vinyl tiles and planks cover a hugh variety of sizes and shapes and can be mix-and-matched to achieve an infinite number of designs. Current fashions include extra wide and long planks for wood through to very small planks for wood. Border effects can be easy to achieve in LVT. Other notable options include:
• Embossed – this is where the top clear layer of the tile has been
www.krausflooring.co.uk
embossed to create a realistic texture that matches the style of the stone of wood decor. Registered embossed is the most authentic – the texture matches the design so that, for example, a wood knot or hand-scraped element in the wood design can be felt on the surface of the flooring.
• Grouting and grooving – vinyl tiles can be laid with grouting inlay strips or beads of vinyl for addewd realism – and there are acrylic grouts that can be applied. In wood decors, planks are available with v-grooves or bevelled edges between planks for added realism.
www.myvictoria.co.uk
LVT construction
Top coating – A polyurethane or aluminium oxide coating provides protection against scratches and stains and gives enhances anti-slip. Wear layer – This is a key layer - determining the performance and resilience of the product. A 0.3mm (12 mil) wear layer is a good for heavy wear areas. Commercial installations need 0.5mm wear layers or above with 0.7mm at the top end. The wear warranties and guarantees carried by products will be based on this thickness. Decor layer – This is the decor itself - in essence it is a paper- or filmbased photographic inkjet print. (A few LVT floors have the image printed directly to the surface of the floor but this implies less image definition and different wear characteristics.)
PVC Middle Layer(s) Fibre Glass Layer(s) PVC Base Layer
THE STOCKLISTS June 2022
PVC and fibre glass layers – The construction ‘sandwich’ can vary between products but a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers for strength and flexibility and fibre glass layers for structural stability may be used. Any click-system profile will be incorporated into these layers. Products often use a combination of recycled vinyl which is cheaper and virgin PVC which lasts longer and is more stable. Rigid core LVT has a solid, less flexible PVC layer with maximum stability which means it can be laid over exisiting, less even flooring without showing imperfections and therefore avoiding wear problems. Base (or backing) layer – The final high density PVC layer varies according to the installation requirement and is designed for taking adhesive or as an ‘underlay’ for loose-lay and click installations. 67

renu® is a game changer. Interfloor’s new underlay meets the concerns of our modern world in reducing waste and being environmentally sustainable.
renu® is a sustainable, recycled carpet underlay and is without question the most sustainable underlay in Interfloor’s long history.
It’s made by bringing together raw materials that we save from going to landfill with some that have a positive effect on the environment.
We have used post-consumer waste, car tyres and plastic bottles in the manufacture of our underlay for many years. But with renu® we have gone even further responding to the aspiration for a fully sustainable product. It’s made from 98% recycled materials, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, which means keeping waste from going to landfill and is 100% recyclable itself! The main body of the underlay is made of foam reclaimed from recycled soft furnishings, this foam is them mixed with a binding agent and subjected to high temperature steam under high pressure. The backing is made from 100% recycled and unbleached paper and we use vegetable-based inks for printing. The facing film is made from an ethically produced, carbonnegative bio-based film made from sugar cane. The sugar cane actively captures CO2 from the atmosphere whilst at the same time releasing oxygen – making this material not just green, but proactively green. Let’s not forget, the point of underlay is that it feels great and prolongs the life of a new carpet and renu®, being made from highdensity foam and with a thickness of 9mm, is suitable for all areas of the home.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
PU (polyurethane) foam • This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Poor or old underlay will...
• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Crumb
Sponge rubber • A more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
PU foam
www.unifloor.nl
Laminate underlay • There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination • A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.
www.underlay.com
Underfloor heating underlay • Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk
Pre-tackified underlay • A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired. Underlayment for LVT • This provides a smooth surface on which you can glue down immediately. If there is a time or acoustic issue or a problematic underfloor, a stable, smooth dual underlay system will provide the best solution.

CLASSIC
Crumb rubber • Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).
Felt • This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets.
