Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Regular Maintenance
Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.
Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.
Periodic Cleaning
When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.
If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package: WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth
• Scoop up or scrape off solids
Chemspec Europe is one of the first WOOLSAFE Licensees in the UK to have a ‘green’ product certified. It is expected that other products will follow shortly.

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT rub
• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge
• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer
Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats
The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.
Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.)
Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.
This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.
N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
The original carpet tile
SHEDDING
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.
6
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
• shedding • pulled loops
SPROUTING
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
SHADING
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
STATIC
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions.
include the measures Preventative introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.
A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990). THE STOCKLISTS March 2009
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.
The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course. THE STOCKLISTS March 2009
FLATTENING
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
SOILING
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages
- Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil
carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.
T HE R EGENCY
Collection
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

THE STOCKLISTS March 2009
Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
WOVEN
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.
Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is BONDED Tip Sheared Level Loop Tip Sheared Level Loop Sheared Level Loop a versatile, textured finish that is idealTipfor plain colours. Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then used for commercial carpet tiles. sheared to give a smooth finish. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.interfloor.com
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.
www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
Benefits
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards
How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Types
www.floorwise.co.uk
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to.
Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours.
A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line.
Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.
As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others.
the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality
Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.
Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of the product range to consumers with a market-leading modular POS system which they will deliver and design to suit your store.
Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

FlooringNews Woven gems rise from the East Eastern Jewels is an exquisite axminster range from Woodward Grosvenor and takes inspiration from ancient persian and turkish design styles.
Eastern Jewels (pictured right) reflects the wondrous designs of old creating a six item range, comprising three unique design styles, each in two distinct, jewel themed colourways. The first is Oushak, a most delicate design, incorporating simple shapes and finely drawn palmettes, offered in two stunning colourways of emerald and sapphire.
Borlu in a larger scale pattern, featuring a beautiful medallion, with integral palmettes and flowers, with a stunning watermarking effect in the ground. This design style uses rich and deep colours, hence the sumptuous ruby and striking olivine tones.
Herat, named after an Afghan city which was part of an ancient trading route, and is adorned with delightful flowers, palmettes and lotus blossoms, and offers a gentler, softer colour palette, with jade and opal hues.

Luxury velvet without reversal
The luxurious feel of velvet makes it a favourite among homeowners looking to create a real sense of indulgence within the home and Ultimo, the luxury brand from Lano Carpets, brings two creations that capture the essence of splendour.
Mayfair Velvet and Wooltouch are beautifully made from 100% pure New Zealand wool, renowned for its durability and colour reproduction, making both carpets suitable for those retailers looking to offer a premium carpet outside of woven axminster or wilton types.
Featuring a 1/10th gauge velvet construction, Mayfair Velvet comes in 14 contemporary shades. Using the same 1/10th velvet construction,Wooltouch is available in 12 natural tones with a neutral edge to ensure widespread appeal.Wooltouch also possesses a 1,890gm/m2 pile weight and is rated for extra heavy residential use.
Lano Carpets has also worked hard to ensure that both Wooltouch and Mayfair Velvet deliver security for the retailer as Bernard Coorevits, Marketing Manager, explains: “Many retailers have been wary of velvet styles as they have been susceptible to pile reversal. However, both Wooltouch and Mayfair Velvet feature our no pile reversal guarantee. Thanks to research, development and innovative manufacturing, retailers can recommend these stunning styles without fear. Wooltouch and Mayfair Velvet come in both four and five-metre widths and feature on a stylish and minimalist point-of-sale display. News Step up to new sales Retailers and distributors on the hunt for products that open up new avenues in sales need look no further than Stair Make-Over, the DIY staircase refurbishment system. With the popularity of wood and laminate flooring, consumers often struggle to find a matching product for the stairs, but with five finishes covering maple, beech, cherry, oak and wenge, Stair Make-Over solves this problem in one easy step.
With no professional installation required, Stair Make-Over is an ideal ‘carry out’ product and consumers can select wood, off-white or brushed aluminium risers to create individual staircases that will transform any hall into a talking point. Stair Make-Over will be supported by comprehensive marketing material, including a compact in-store display and literature, as well as a comprehensive website that guides consumers to their nearest stockist. With the web an important part of research for any consumer, www.stairmakeover.com has been developed to explain the benefits of the system and has a Stair Calculator built-in, through which consumers can exactly calculate the amount of product they need, ensuring no wastage and helping to keep Stair Make-Over a competitive solution for worn staircases.
Ronnie Houben, UK Sales Manager, Stair Make-Over, comments: “With widespread success in Holland and rapidly expanding markets throughout other mainland territories, Stair Make-Over is bringing a tried and tested formula to the UK and also a product that opens up a new sales potential for retailers and distributors. We will work closely with our partners to ensure that they fully understand the system and its advantages, helping them to work towards the sales figures that we are confident the product can bring.” T +31 40208 6222

Green appeal gets smarter The Mohawk Group’s range of residential carpets are finding favour among green consumers with products that bring a blend of 100% recycled material, great style and excellent value.
Products such as Weston Hill, a cut pile style available in 20 colours ranging from neutral tones through to pinks and on to rich reds and regal greens, use The Mohawk Group’s unique EverStrand fibre and feature on a special environmental tombola. Mohawk takes plastic drinks bottles and turns them into soft and durable polyester in the form of EverStrand. By using plastic bottles made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate), Mohawk can extrude them into fibres that are far superior to lower-grade synthetic virgin fibres used in some carpet yarns. Mohawk recycles over three billion plastic bottles each year and controls every aspect of the recycling process to guarantee the highest standards of performance in its luxurious and beautiful carpet. Weston Hill is treated with ScotchGard Protector Advanced Repel Technology that protects the fibre from tip to backing, making Weston Hill more resistant to staining and soiling and easier to clean. “There is no doubt that the environment is in our consciousness and a growing group of consumers are looking for products that help towards reducing their personal impact on the environment,” comments Howard Lindsay, Sales Manager, Residential Division. “Our EverStrand products make this possible for carpet too without compromising style or value making them an ideal addition to the retailer’s shop-front.” Weston Hill is available 3.66m wide and has a pile weight of 30oz. Consumer site hits harder The new Carpet Foundation website is proving a great success. Designed to drive footfall into Registered Specialists, overtly play on the link with the Office of Fair Trading, promote British made carpet and have greater accountability with harder hitting messages, it has been very well received by consumers and retailers alike.
The new design is modern, clean and easy to navigate while the content has been reorganised. It still provides the ‘everything you need to know when buying carpet’ advice but is more commercial and harder hitting. An advanced retailer search facility, which can be searched by postcode or town, includes directions and gives consumers easy up front access to their nearest Registered Specialist.
With a bank of over 150 images, each section has a random flash slide show and contains hard hitting propaganda statements. A key feature of the new site is a downloadable voucher. No definite committal to purchase is necessary and all consumers have to do is get the voucher stamped by a Registered Specialist. The incentive is that 50 individuals each month win a Threshers gift voucher worth £10.
An added bonus for retailers is that the Carpet Foundation is providing, on application, a free web page for all its retail members. The site is also fully optimised and is now firmly entrenched in the top 5 on Google. Since 1st October, 42,500 individuals have visited the site and 9,400 have used the site to find a retailer.
Commenting on the site’s performance, Rupert Anton, CF marketing director said: “We acknowledged that we had to become more hard nosed and really play up to our strengths. The results, however, have exceeded our expectations. Site traffic has increased; people are spending longer on the site, viewing more pages and revisiting more often. It is being used very much as ‘the definitive guide to carpet’ and is fast becoming the one stop portal for the carpet buying public. It majors on our strengths; is more aggressive against the opposition and what is more, it is all changeable in-house.”
Brintons rolls out fashionable fleet Throughout September, October and November 2008, Brintons received what seemed like a steady stream of new vehicles which are quite stunning in the new Brintons Residential livery depicting their Seasons campaign.
The Brintons vehicle fleet includes merchandising and their in-house team of fitters also who received new vans displaying this head-turning new livery.
The new fleet is much more fuel efficient than the previous vehicles and gives Brintons the opportunity to maximise the number of deliveries they make without the use of external carriers which in turn leads to them utilising their own vehicles more efficiently, controlling costs. This will also enable them to roll-out their ‘next-week’ delivery service across more areas as well as offer the ability of delivering the week after receiving a Saturday morning order to more territories.
In addition, Brintons endeavor to keep the vehicles as clean as possible, especially through the Winter, ensuring that the livery stays bright and distinct. The receipt of these new vehicles clearly indicates Brintons eagerness to invest in the brand whatever the market conditions. T 01562 748000

The British Wool column Wool proves resilient at US trade show
The American flooring show Surfaces held in Las Vegas in the first week of February was always going to be interesting. The global recession that has affected the world so dramatically began in the USA and they are clearly feeling its affects badly. Property foreclosures (repossessions) are a horrific reality there, property values have fallen through the floor and new build is almost non- existent.
So what of the flooring industry? The gloomy reality was clearly never far away. But whilst some manufacturers had pulled out of the show as a cost cutting measure, the majority were still exhibiting and most remained confident that they would work their way through the difficulties. Most of them seem set for a tough 18 months.
Surfaces, Las Vegas, USA – February 2009
America and the eco advantage
A quality independent retailer from Colorado was open and honest about carpet and green advantages in a way that we don’t often hear in the UK. “Wool is the way forward, no dyes, no chemicals, no nylon – 100%, that’s what I sell and we want to know how that manufacturer is limiting his carbon footprint. The use of solar panels to the amount of water he uses – it counts in Colorado”
Some areas of the USA are way ahead on the eco agenda – Colorado clearly being one of them. But green build is a growing trend everywhere there and it has lots of government directives and initiatives pushing it forward. Clearly, this retailer saw that by having this level of information about his product and displaying ‘greener’ ranges that met eco-specifications, he was winning valuable business. Interest rates being a powerful green purchase incentive – in the USA, there are special loan rates to industry for using products that meet eco specs.
“The nitty gritty of eco is becoming more important, some states are really pinning us down on our product and our environmental-business plan,” said Sharon Bric of Hibernia Carpet Mills in Los Angeles.
Wool, it seems, fares better there than other flooring types. It is a luxury fibre flooring in the USA and its consumer is high end, it is often sold via interior design consultants and architects. “Because of this it has had a stronger position than products aimed at middle to low end and is actually growing market share,” explained Tim Booth, product development manager at British Wool.
Accompanied by co-exhibitors Brintons, Axminster Carpets, Cavalier Carpets and designer flatweave manufacturer Fleetwood Fox, British Wool hosted a striking British themed event, which enjoyed good interest throughout the three days of the show.
Footfall was almost certainly down on the previous year but all co-exhibitors felt that they had received good interest from quality visitors. “Ultimately what matters most is quality over quantity. The key for British Wool is that as a team we felt that we had gained ground in this valuable market, particularly rewarding when you consider the difficulties the US market is facing.”
Ulster Carpets wins Carbon Trust award Ulster Carpets has become the first UK textile manufacturer to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard - an award for businesses that have measured, managed and reduced their carbon footprint and are committed to the continual reduction of carbon emissions year on year.
The Carbon Trust Standard clearly Picture L-R - Harry Morrison – General Manager, Carbon demonstrates which Trust Standard Company, George Ussher – Technical Services businesses and organisations are taking and Environmental Manager, Ulster Carpet, Gail McKee – real action on climate Environmental Co-ordinator, Ulster Carpets. change and have reduced their own carbon emissions. It was set up by the Carbon Trust in response to the consumer mistrust of green claims and also confusion among businesses about what they could do to improve energy efficiency. It requires clear and continual action by the company, which is verified by a recognised regulatory authority.
Since 2001, Ulster Carpets has reduced their carbon footprint by 44% through the implementation of various initiatives. These include upgrading lighting systems, installing heat recovery plants and developing energy efficient in-house weaving equipment. To achieve the standard the company has reduced its carbon footprint by nine per cent over the last three years saving more than 650 tonnes of carbon.

News Ele Ease makes UK debut Ele Ease, the revolutionary new floating floor product set to transform the luxury vinyl sector, has been revamped and extended for its UK market launch.
With its unique Stick Strip technology, Ele Ease halves the cost of laying conventional luxury vinyl tile and plank products – and reduces installation time by up to 75%. Now, thanks to a collaboration between the Hartlepool-based Whitestone Weavers group of companies and the Zhangjiagang Elegant Plastics Company in China, Eletile Ltd is launching a UK specific range.
“It’s an incredible product because it can be laid over an existing floor, requires no adhesive and very little preparation,” says Mark Taylor who heads up the UK side of the Eletile partnership.
New Ele Ease products being launched in April are Finesse – a collection of 48” registered emboss planks - and Ele Ease At Home – a brand new collection for the domestic market in ten wood ranges and six slate coloured tile options (12” and 36” sizes). Ele Ease will be the first to offer matching finishing strips. The new products are in addition to the Ele Ease Commercial range in eight woods and three tiles; and the Ele Ease Signature collection in five woods. The first proven floating floor system, all Ele Ease products pass 95% Relative Humidity tests, dispensing with any need for a damp proof membrane.
Such time and cost savings have already seen Ele Ease installed in a number of High Street stores (including B&Q, PC World, BHS and WH Smith) where the ease and speed of fitting has dramatically reduced store opening schedules.
Independent stockists also stand to make huge gains. Says Mark: “Conventional LVT products offer greater opportunities to the flooring fitter than they do the retailer because of the sheer amount of time they take to install. With Ele Ease, a stockist can get a fitter to lay several floors in the time it would have taken to do just one with traditional vinyl. Consumers will also be more willing to have a go themselves as the system is so quick and straightforward.” There are environmental benefits too: Ele Ease needs no uplift of old floors and, in many cases, no eco-unfriendly adhesives or screeds. The new Ele Ease products from Eletile are available from April 2009. Full point of sale supporting packages are available to stockists. T 01429 892540 www.eletile.co.uk

“This represents the ultimate in flooring accessories where the best quality and value products from two of the leading UK flooring brands, Stikatak and Gripperrods, have been combined to provide the most comprehensive range ever,” said Interfloor marketing director Steve Woodhead. Flower on Flooring
by Dennis Flower
Keeping it clean Nothing encourages customer loyalty and repeat sales more than the delivery of helpful tips and advice in times of need.Whilst this could include any number of instances where flooring is concerned, one of the more common issues experienced by consumers is often that of cleaning.
Further to building effective relationships with customers, flooring retailers can also benefit from add-on sales by stocking the cleaning products that they are happy to recommend.Additional revenue streams are obviously desirable for any business and especially applicable when headlines continue to focus on an economic downturn. Paul Bakker,WoolSafe managing director, says that flooring retailers can impress consumers by adopting an innovative approach when the situation demands it.This could include the removal of coffee stains or burn and scorch marks, he advised. 'Burn and scorch marks may see homeowners reaching for scissors, particularly on twist pile carpets, in order to remove the mark,’ he said.‘However, such drastic action is not necessary for 100% wool carpets and there are a couple of tricks to try first. Rubbing the affected area with a coin may well help and if that fails tell the homeowner to try rubbing the area gently with some coarse grit sandpaper. Unfortunately, on 80/20 wool nylon carpets the damage may be permanent due to the nylon melting.’ There are a number of cleaning products recommended by WoolSafe to tackle a variety of problems. The company has also published a list of certified operators for further action if the consumer requires additional assistance.
Innovation continues to play a part in the cleaning arena. A recent example is that of the ReadyDry product from Bissell. The company states that this is able to provide a carpet cleaning concept that is dry in 30 minutes by utilising patented PowerRoller technology, sourced from the commercial sector. Bissell reports that the use of ReadyDry means that carpets can now be washed and dried in the time normally taken to vacuum. The product works by using minimum moisture to trap, lift and gently remove dirt, says the company. As the moisture does not soak through and there is no direct cleaning solution spray/suction, carpets and rugs are touch dry in half an hour. The use of the Oxy Gen2 power tool can also provide spot cleaning, helping to deal with stains such as red wine and coffee when combined with Oxygen Boost.
Floor cleaning products are also included in the comprehensive range offered by Ozkleen. Its Carpet Power and Kitchen Power options have been developed for use on a variety of flooring products, the company states. Among the benefits delivered by its Carpet Power range are the ability to tackle tough stains such as tea, ink and those created by the family pet, says Ozkleen, and this can be used on most types of carpet and upholstery.A further plus is the ability to eliminate odours - another common problem when spillages occur and Carpet Power is also approved by WoolSafe. The company states that its Kitchen Power has been developed as a multi-purpose product that, when diluted with water, has the ability to penetrate any ground-in floor dirt.
Retailers can benefit from servicing consumers’ stain problems with effective products and advice
Cleaning appliances can also be recommended by retailers on the basis that their customers’ investment in new flooring can be better protected if it is cleaned more effectively. In addition to designing its machines to last for a minimum of 25 years, Sebo has also looked at the environmental impact of its range. As a result 100% of its packaging can now by recycled, the company states, as this is created through the use of sustainably-sourced wood pulp cardboard and recyclable Polystyrol. Each vacuum is also manufactured in Europe, thereby avoiding the need for long haul transportation and keeping carbon footprint to a minimum, says Sebo, with the maximum amount of products included on each palette for transportation.

W E N retailers respond to industry issues Flooring Forum
Carpet - are we selling it short? l Are retailers too quick to sell on price? l Do consumers understand enough about quality to pay more for it? l Do manufacturers understand retail enough to help you sell higher value products?
A common theme that comes up repeatedly in our Voice of the Trade feature is that retailers don’t always do enough to trade their customers up to better quality products. Some manufacturers comment that retailers are too keen to sell on price and only have themselves to blame for devaluing carpet as a commodity purchase. Fair comment? Or could manufacturers do more to motivate higher margin sales? This is your chance to influence the industry by taking part in this month's Flooring Forum.
Note that this survey takes only 4 minutes and it's confidential and anonymous - we don't need you to leave any personal information.Visit www.thestocklists.com and click on the Forum panel. Next month we’ll report on the findings to see how retailers respond to the challenge.
a new service for retailers from The Stocklists
The Stocklists has launched a new platform for retailers to respond to trade issues and inform the industry about the problems and opportunities they face on the High Street and retail parks across the UK.
Each month,The Stocklists will present a topic for debate linked to an online survey. The survey is anonymous and will takes no more that four minutes to complete. A full report and analysis of the results will feature in each month’s magazine. The Stocklists publisher Diane Martin commented: “The retailer doesn’t have much of a voice in the flooring industry - it’s usually the manufacturers and distributors who get centre stage.
“We want to give those people at the sharp end an opportunity to make themselves heard and ensure that debate and decisions in the industry are informed by the widest seelction of views and opinions.” The survey aims to be provocative and, as well as a series of questions, there’s a Soapbox feature where retailers can sound off about the subject - The Stocklists will print as many responses as are fit to publish.
Future topics include: the real value of environmental marketing; the performance of reps; POS best practice; training and buying groups.
If you have a topic you would like debated, let us know.
Join the debate. Inform the industry. It’s anonymous and takes just 4 minutes of your time. Visit www.thestocklists.com and click the Forum panel.

yarn technology
Wool is securing its place as the ‘fibre of fashion’ thanks to an ambitious programme of innovation in yarn technology that reaches around the world with Wools of New Zealand and is driven by the creativity of their International Development Centre in Yorkshire.
Their aims recognise the need to improve consumer perception of carpets and capitalise on the premium potential of top quality wool carpet in European markets. This is especially true in the UK where wool retains its loyalty and the high-end product is still considered to be selling well against the market trend.
“We believe carpet is a fashion industry and there is a strong market for creative quality in this sector,” says Joanna Ramsden of WNZ. “The key to sustaining this interest is innovation to keep that creativity fresh and exciting.” Wools of New Zealand starts at the beginning, nurturing that innovative zeal with a close relationship with their international yarn spinners. This partnership is part technology and part creativity and has fostered exciting new yarn combinations such as wools with silks and cottons and, more surprisingly, paper, bamboo and shiny metallics and synthetic fibres.
The showcase for this initiative is the Yarn Innovation Awards held annually at Domotex where new yarns and their finished carpets are displayed art-gallery style and voted on by selected judges at the show, representing more than 20 leading carpet manufacturers. This year’s presentation, held in Hannover in January, featured spinners from Italy, Japan and New Zealand and designs inspired by contemporary trends in Celtic knitwear, Scottish plaids, ‘Saville Row suiting’ and fashionable Italian woven leather. And in this Oscar ceremony of wool fashion, the Italian spinner

Commanding international attention is the conceptual Lace Collection, presented by Wools of New Zealand to demonstrate how yarn technology can deliver stunning results. Taking their cue from fashions seen on the 2008 Italian catwalks, the designers have taken an ebony wool contrasted with the bright Glacial® white wool yarn, to create a delicate, web-like fabric. The introduction of an innovative three-dimensional texture gives the true lace effect of the design floating on its surface.
This ‘Mirage’ design adds advanced tufting technology to sophisticated yarns to create a complex multi-dimensional effect modelled on woven leather handbag styles.

sets fashion agenda “there is a strong market for creative quality in this sector” Martinelli took centre stage with two awards – as ‘Yarn Innovator 2009’ and for having the ‘Best Visual Yarn’.
A leader in the production of high quality chenille yarns for carpets and rugs, Martinelli succeeded with their Rustic Wool Chenille yarn of New Zealand wool, bamboo and cotton. Demonstrating the flair for which Italians are famous, the yarn has a soft, velvety finish in shades of olive and aubergine with a sumptuous gold, creating a natural elegant rustic quality with a random laméd effect.
Martinelli’s award for the Best Visual Yarn shows the Wools of New Zealand partnership to great effect.Their winner was the Doupionné Wool Tweed – a black wool yarn plied with a lustrous white doupionné bamboo. Presented with a glamorous black and white yarn, the WNZ designers at Ilkley translated the fibre into extravagant contrast checks in the iconic style of Coco Chanel.
The various carpet designs that emerge from each new yarn innovation become part of the Wools of New Zealand Carpet Trend Portfolio, a fashion-setting collection shown to manufacturers, spinners and designers around the world to set the agenda for future developments.
But this approach is of more than academic interest - these yarns find their way onto the floor. “Our enthusiasm for the technology and the design is rooted in the marketplace,” says Joanna Ramsden. “We are designing to inspire consumers to invest in quality products and our approach is wholly commercial. Many of the concepts that visitors to Domotex see on the wall will end up on the floor of the most discerning consumers.” L to R Tim Lonsdale (WNZ CEO), Massimo Moreschi (Martinelli, Italy), Klaus Steimann (WNZ Manager Europe)

New role to rejuvenate Wools of New Zealand
In a move to maximise the impact of quality wool marketing,Wools of New Zealand has integrated with Wool Partners International – a newly established wool procurement and marketing company.
The new organisation’s aim is to ‘rejuvenate’ the New Zealand ‘strong wool’ industry and intends to secure its place as market leader in both the supply chain and branding for strong wool.
Wools of New Zealand fits within this new entity and its programme for premium carpets and rugs is seen as a key part of the package.
Wool Partners owns New Zealand’s largest wool handling facility and has the largest wool-dedicated procurement team dealing directly with wool growers. It also operates its own wool trading division and is seeking partnerships across the supply chain to provide an integrated service from farm to consumer’s floor.
Iain Abercrombie has been appointed chief executive of Wool Partners International and commented: “We see a huge opportunity to re-introduce wool as a luxury fibre to a changing world and to do this requires a new approach – a genuine partnership. We are excited about the untapped potential.”

Trade shows under pressure in downturn London’s Floorstyle and the Tile and Stone exhibitions scheduled for May this year have been postponed, Organisers Dmg world media cited the ‘extraordinary economic climate’ despite the success of the event at London’s Excel since its launch in 2001.
Dmg world media publishing and events director Patrick Taylor said: “The economic downturn has hit this industry hard and it has become clear that potential exhibitors do not need the added strain of sustaining a 2009 London show. In the hundreds of conversations we’ve had, the vast majority of suppliers and manufacturers are saying they have made a strategic decision to not exhibit in London in 2009 and we respect and understand that. Kbbreview is now in its 25th year and we’ve reached that milestone by always supporting and listening to the industry.” The announcement leaves the National Floor Show at Harrogate as the only UK flooring exhbition this year and organisers, UBM, have asked the industry to show their support for the event. ‘With six months to go until National Floor Show, we are in a steady position considering the current climate, in particular the hard times that the flooring sector is undergoing,’ said UBM’s Sam Fisher.
“To ensure this is a flooring success, we need the 100% backing of the industry.” National Floor Show organisers
The key exhibitors are already signed up for the event which takes place September 8-10. Sam commented: ‘We are now focused on bringing in new companies to provide even more reasons to visit the event in September. To ensure this is a flooring success, we need the 100% backing of the industry. This is the only chance in 2009 for manufacturers and suppliers to meet with thousands of customers over three days,” she said. The kbbreview Industry Awards 2009 will be going ahead at ExCeL on May 11 as planned. “The kbbreview Industry Awards is the biggest party of the year and the 2009 event is set to be bigger and better even than the record breaking 2008, ” said dmg’s Patrick Taylor. Rugged beauty The wildernesses of Scotland and Scandinavia are the inspiration behind Brockway Carpets' Shetland range, launched recently to rave reviews.
Shetland is made from a blend of wools from Norway and the Shetland Islands, with its stunning looks and feel deriving from the fact that it is a 100% natural product. The wools are not artificially dyed but coloured by a natural process whereby the spinner blends the raw washed wools together to create soft, delicate tones that reflect the product's unique heritage. The carpet comes in a range of attractive greys, fawns and creams in heathered effect. Despite its luxurious, soft feel, it is still hardwearing and durable enough for the toughest domestic environment: the wool produced by the hardy Shetland sheep translates into an extremely resilient, springy yarn which is ideal for carpets. The new range further reinforces Brockway's commitment to supporting local British traditional industries. Like its Lakeland Herdwick range, which helps sustain the Lake District's native Herdwick sheep, the Shetland range supports a traditional industry which is vital to the way of life of one of the UK's most far-flung communities. News Booming business
New sales heads at Vorwerk Vorwerk Carpets has announced the appointment of Roberto Martinez to Sales Director effective immediately.
Based in Gemany, Roberto will head-up a strong team and will be responsible for sales strategy and steering the co-ordination for domestic and international business at the carpet manufacturer.
In today’s economic climate, BFS are promoting their carpet booms as the best in the business to avoid “spending a fortune on buying or hiring inferior booms on forklifts?”
Trained and certified in the industrial sales sector, Roberto has been promoted to the new position after working with the carpet manufacturer as Export Director. In all, Roberto has over 15 years experience of international sales experience.
On an international scale, Roberto will be developing Vorwerk’s domestic business in Germany as well as expanding key markets in Eastern Europe, Asia and the USA
Quality BFS Carpet Booms have been proven to last by big name carpet industry customers such as Adam, Brintons, Brockway, Headlam and Victoria.
Rob Sadler, MCD, Kidderminster says “Our operators prefer BFS booms because their narrow back plates ensure the best visibility. BFS fit optional camera brackets and spacers/buffers to our boom back plates ensuring accurate positioning of the carpets and eliminating rack damage. Many of our BFS booms are over 20 years old, they’re the best boom on the market”. T 0121 557 1935

Ian Hammond has been appointed the UK Sales Director for Vorwerk Carpets as the German manufacturer looks towards increasing its presence within the UK commercial and residential sectors. Ian has been associated with the Vorwerk brand in various guises since 1992 as the sole agent for the UK, but is now directly employed by the leading manufacturer to drive high style collections to consumers, retailers, specifiers, architects and contractors across the UK.
With over 40 years experience in the carpet industry and a comprehensive knowledge of Vorwerk’s fascinating carpet collections that are raising the bar in terms of style, Ian is ideally placed to liaise with retailers and designers alike having spent time at Crossley, Kosset Carpets and Mercia Weavers, alongside looking after interior designers such as Colefax and Fowler.
“I know very few people with more experience of the carpet industry than Ian,” comments Roberto Martinez, Senior Vice President responsible for domestic and international sales and strategy. “His knowledge of manufacturing as well as his dedication and belief in Vorwerk Carpets gives me every confidence that we will see the UK become an increasing part of our international strategy.” The Vorwerk brand is regarded by many involved in the interiors industries as a leading exponent of carpets that bring innovation and style in abundance and with Ian’s appointment,Vorwerk will continue to be featured in some of the UK’s most prestigious installations. “Whether houses, corporate offices or leisure venues,Vorwerk is famed for its cutting edge approach to carpet. Working with leading figures such as Ulf Moritz and Zaha Hadid, we have developed ranges that not only represent the pinnacle of design, but as in our TEXtiles collection, cradle to cradle sustainability and high levels of performance. With this behind us and a growing customer base, the future looks bright,” concludes Ian Hammond.

‘Not too late’ to save flooring companies as insolvencies soar Restructuring specialists believe the number of UK insolvencies will soar by 55% towards the end of 2009, more than double the number before the credit crunch. However, a new analysis by business intelligence analysts Plimsoll Publishing, suggests that it’s not too late to save many of the 139 UK floor coverings ‘danger’ companies rated as being at high risk of failure. However the new report comes with a warning: these companies must start to fix their problems now. David Pattison, senior business analyst at Plimsoll, says: “The first issue is to understand the extent of the problems the company is facing. In our 22 years of analysing the floor coverings market, the symptoms of a failing business are sadly, all too familiar.” Plimsoll maps out five phases of failure: Phase 1.The company comes under pressure to increase sales, so uses all their resources, maybe selling at a loss, or adding costs to service their clients’ demands. Phase 2. As a result, the company is encouraged to take on extra short term debts to finance the sales drive, putting extra pressure on their profit margins through extra interest payments - therefore failing to cut costs. Phase 3. After a while, the banks grow nervous and ask that this unsecured finance be swapped to long term finance.
Phase 4. Armed with the extra financed capital, the company continues with the failing strategy and allows the overdraft to start to build up again and thus eroding the profits more.
Phase 5. The company debt grows to an uncontrolled level and the banks once again grow nervous and may demand immediate repayment of the debt. When the company is unable to do this, administrators are called in. David Pattison says: “A critical factor in this cycle is to understand the key measures to monitor in your business in order to pinpoint any decline. Our analysis will tell you instantly, where the company is strong and what its weaknesses are, so that a clear set of turnaround
targets can be put in place. Companies are made aware of their problems sooner, and the management then has more time to put a survival plan in place and stave off the administrators.
“In essence, the key to avoiding administration is to put in place the measures yourself that they would instigate,” he says. Plimsoll cites three options for companies to survive and be well-placed to capitalise when the market picks up.
Cut costs now: This is not easy; it means the company must accept it will be a smaller enterprise and job losses will generally be part of the plan. It then needs to look at a survival plan and adopt the mindset of a receiver, cutting out non-profitable contracts, reducing overheads and also renegotiating with key suppliers. The objective must be to reduce the level of debt.
Sell the company or look for an investor: Despite the doom and gloom in the market, this option should not be ruled out. 537 firms identified in the sector have cash to spend and could easily afford to finance a purchase out of cash. The 139 danger companies are very vulnerable to an aggressive takeover, yet there could be a great benefit in selling up. A new owner would give the company time and resource to turn their performance around. Sadly again, this will inevitably involve job loses and reducing the size of the company to rejuvenate the business.
Trade their way out: In the current economic climate this is the least likely strategy, most of these 139 companies have fairly long term problems, so its clear their current business is not competitive in the market and simply doing the same will not change anything. Combine this with the inability to raise extra finance and time is not on the side of this approach. Only a few of the ‘Danger’ companies have this as a viable option. News FTBA rewards top supporters The Furnishing Trades’ Benevolent Association (FTBA) has named Mark Webster and United Business MediaLive as its Individual and Corporate Supporter of The Year for 2008. Presented during the Interiors Birmingham show, the awards recognise the outstanding service both have made in support of the industry’s only dedicated charity.
Former FTBA president Mark Webster, chairman of Mark Webster Designs, took the Individual Supporter award in recognition of the personal time, effort and money he has given to the association. His citation said: “During your time as national president you did much to raise the awareness of the FTBA …and have generously and frequently assisted the FTBA through personal donations as well as corporate ones.”
UBM-Live (formerly CMPi) was named Corporate Supporter of The Year for “actively supporting the Nigel Blake presents the Individual Supporter FTBA over many years by way of corporate award to Mark Webster (right). donations, fund raising activities and the involvement of senior executives’ time and efforts to support the charity.” The award was received on behalf of the company by event director Andy Vaughan.

Said FTBA interim chief executive Nigel Blake, who presented the citations: “The criteria for these awards are precise and demanding and it is our directors and trustees who decide on the winners and in both cases the decision was unanimous. “People and organisations such as Mark Webster and UBM-Live are what keep our charity alive and able to continue helping people across the industry in times of hardship or financial crisis.”
Time for tee - industry set to support charity drive Sponsored by Georgian Carpets, the 53rd Kidderminster Carpet Manufacturers National Golf Tournament, in aid of the Furnishing Trades Benevolent Association and Macmillan Cancer Support, takes place at Kidderminster Golf Club on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th May 2009. The popular event, which last year raised £26,000 for the two charities, is the second largest fundraising event for the FTBA.
Day One is a four ball team event while Day Two is a two ball team event. There is also a dinner at the Granary Hotel in Kidderminster in the evening of Tuesday 12th May. Cost is £50 for one day and £80 for both days. The dinner is £30 a head.
The new Chairman Rupert Anton said: “While everyone knows about the good work of Macmillan, the FTBA is less well known but no less important to us in the carpet industry. Created by the industry for the industry, it is the only charity exclusively dedicated to helping those who are, or who have been, involved with the furnishing, carpet and allied industries, and who through no fault of their own find themselves facing unexpected or financial hardship.
Last year’s winners The Ulster Tykes with Shaun Lewis, Victoria Carpets and Peter Kimmins of sponsor Georgian Carpets.
“It has over 300 long term beneficiaries and the financial support received from individual companies is critical to the work that the FTBA is able to do on behalf of the industry. Over the past 10 years the FTBA has made grants in excess of £1 million. It cannot go on providing this level of support without the encouragement and backing of our great industry. I know market conditions are testing but it is very much business as usual for us.” For details on how to play in this year’s tournament or indeed sponsorship, please contact Rupert Anton on 01562 747 359 or rupertanton@carpetfoundation.com.
