Double appointment at Victoria As the new year gets into full swing Victoria are strengthening their sales team with a new Sales Executive in North Yorkshire/North East, with the appointment of Scott Lea (on the left of the picture). Scott has joined Victoria from Ryalux where he was a Regional Manager and before that with Manx, Woodward Grosvenor and Westex. With this experience, he will be a great addition to the Victoria team. The second appointment is Sean Brett. Sean will be an addition to our southern Irish sales team under the Navan brand. Sean will bring with him a wealth of experience, working as a sales rep for O’Dea & Co Ltd for the last 13 years covering Munster area, and before that worked in the retailing side of the business. Phil Hartley MD at Victoria said: we are delighted to welcome both Scott and Sean to the Victoria and Navan sales team, I am sure both will add strength and depth to our existing sales force.

NEWS Sweet success

Bubblegum & Liquorice, an assortment of bright and playful cushion vinyl flooring designs from Avenue, has been reinvigorated for 2018 with the introduction of nine hot new looks.

One of the brand’s most popular collections, Bubblegum & Liquorice has matured for 2018, with some of the more outlandish looks replaced by intelligent and sophisticated approaches to tile and geometric design. Of course, the ever-popular rainbow stripe remains, but these new designs prove the collection as one for the style conscious. Duck egg blue dominates the introductions with Sagres and Dots representing colour updates to existing designs. New for 2018, the exotic Magali and Shalimar also feature the shade, the latter harking back to tiles of grand Parisian residences. Elsewhere the strong black/white theme remains, the new Siena a twist on the resurgent diamond pattern found in York. Also available in a grey/white combination, both styles are joined by variants of Sagres and Magali in the same tonal combination. Lattice joins the Bubblegum and Liquorice collection for this year, its over-scaled weave available in black/white, while an all-black Dots rounds out the introductions. As part of Avenue’s Choice collection of great value cushion flooring in two and three-metre widths, Bubblegum & Liquorice comes with a seven-year wear warranty and features a specially developed Thermoback foam backing for better underfoot comfort and warmth. Updates to the Avenue Floors display unit will be rolling out to retailers this Spring. T 0800 032 3970 www.avenuefloors.co.uk

Spring in its step

Home and lifestyle retailers attending the Spring Fair were treated to an extraordinary display of rug styles from Flair Rugs, as the company showcased its latest introductions and enduring favourites.

The latest Luxmi range took centre stage with visitors shown delights such as Solitaire, Persian Fusion, Cairo and Alpaca. Named after the mother of founder Dinesh Shah, Luxmi is the brand’s premium residential collection, so proved the perfect introduction to Flair Rugs for home and lifestyle retailers at the show. Luxmi also features the Inspired by V&A capsule collection and the supplier previewed the SS18 launches in the collection, including a striking design inspired by 1920s promotional posters for ocean liner voyages. Selected styles from the value-driven Simplicity and core collection were also on show at the exhibition, highlighting that Flair Rugs has a depth of portfolio unparalleled by any other supplier and offering something for every budget and style. Presented on a new look stand, dominated by high-gloss white, the array proved impressive to many visitors: “The Spring Fair was a busy show for us and it was great to see so much interest in our styles from online and physical retailers,” says Sinead Donohoe, marketing manager, Flair Rugs. “Rugs are the perfect addition in any home and lifestyle store; an easily accessible, take-away item that adds a complementing sales stream and with qualities to suit every price-point, our rugs cover impulse to considered purchase.” T 01457 850660 www.flairrugs.com

Art and archive

Louis de Poortere has launched the stunning Antiquarian collection of rugs drawing on original designs from its archive.

Centred around three designs in the Heriz, Bakthiari and Hadchlu patterns that formed some of its best-selling face-to-face wool rug qualities from the 1960s – 2000s, the Antiquarian collection reinvents these iconic designs for today’s homes. These rugs present a modern cotton flatweave with a heavy handdistressed effect for an authentic worn look. “Antiquarian is a truly extraordinary machine-made collection that draws on our library to celebrate some of our most iconic rugs,” explains Alan Russell, sales director. “While traditional at their heart, each design has been given a thoroughly modern rework and hand-distressed to give the worn-vintage look that’s a huge driver in contemporary rug design. The range is a great way to bring-back old favourites in a manner that’s undeniably modern and far from pastiche.” The legendary 782-Hadchlu, often known as the ‘Notary Rug’, was famed for its ability to blend into a classic notary study as easily as it could into a sleek yuppie interior. Showing a familiar yet almost-forgotten pattern, Antique Heriz features a large central medallion and a stair patterned perimeter. With the original inspired by traditional Persian designs; and Antique Bakthiari celebrates the traditional patterns from the Iranian tribe of that name. Each hand-finished jacquard woven quality is made from 100% cotton and comes with an anti-slip backing. Made in Belgium in a range of sizes from 140 x 200cm up to 290 x 390cm, Antiquarian is a stand-out collection that brings fabled quality to iconic designs reimagined for the modern home. NEWS Unilin eco boost

Unilin, division flooring, is the first flooring manufacturer to receive the much-coveted EU Ecolabel for its direct pressure laminate (DPL) flooring. Unilin’s Pergo and Quick-Step laminate flooring and Pergo Parquet already have the Nordic Swan label. By adding the EU Ecolabel to its standard-produced Pergo, Quick-Step and Balterio laminates, Unilin delivers on its promise to produce healthy, sustainable flooring while also further strengthening its market position.

Introduced in 1992 by the European Commission, the EU Ecolabel is a label of environmental excellence that is awarded to products and services meeting high ecological standards throughout their life cycles: from raw materials extraction to production, distribution, and disposal. The criteria for the Ecolabel are set by a number of stakeholders, including NGOs, governments, industry, academia, and consumer groups. Intended to guide and inform consumers about a product’s impact on health and environment, there’s an EU Ecolabel for a variety of products and services. At the end of January 2017, the EU Ecolabel for wood, cork and bamboobased floor coverings was revised to include laminate flooring. This voluntary label goes far beyond legal requirements. For example, in the case of chemicals, the EU Ecolabel strictly prohibits certain chemicals, or the corresponding limit values are much lower than required under applicable laws. To qualify for an EU Ecolabel certification, flooring manufacturers need to: • • • • • • •

Use materials that are produced in a sustainable way; Meet specific criteria based on the product life cycle approach; Lower energy consumption for production; Significantly limit the use of hazardous compounds; Restrict levels of hazardous residues; Limit contribution to indoor air pollution; Promote durable and high-quality products

floorwise firm grip

Diamond Gripper is known throughout the flooring industry as the benchmark in quality and value, giving assured grip no matter what the task. Extra-wide and with an increased number of quality zinc-coated rust-resistant pins, Diamond Gripper is ideal for the latest generation of super-thick PU underlays, holding fast even with 10 and 11mm thick qualities. A sign of a fitter’s attention to their craft, Diamond Gripper is a feature of high-quality installations and when complex jobs demand more from gripper, it’s the box of Diamond Gripper that fitters turn to. Great for power-stretching and five-metre wide installations, it is the best gripper around. “Diamond Gripper has been proving itself for years in the most demanding of jobs,” says Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. “While others have tried to make similar products wider or with more pins, none have been able to match Diamond Grippers legendary quality and unbeatable value.” Wider than most standard qualities, Diamond Gripper helps to reduce accidental damage to walls and skirting when nailing to make installation faster, so it’s easy to see why this is another floorwise product to be a popular choice for fitters across the country.

The EU Ecolabel is one of the most practical tools to promote the circular economy in the EU Single Market. For Unilin, sustainable sourcing and disposal will always be a focal point in its activities.

Available in pre-nailed options for concrete, wood and dual-purpose, Diamond Gripper can be found at floorwise trade counters throughout the UK and Ireland. Packaged to ensure each length arrives in perfect condition, this benchmark in gripping prowess is ready to grab on tight and not let go in all carpet installations.

Carpet recycling rises

Volumes of carpet waste diverted from landfill in the UK continue to rise, with 168,000 tonnes reused, recycled or recovered for energy in 2017, reports Carpet Recycling UK.

This represents a diversion rate of 42% - up from 35% and an increase in 26,000 tonnes compared to 2016, according to the industry body’s latest figures. Around 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arise each year in the UK. Energy recovery accounted for 124,000 tonnes with the growing use of carpets as a renewable fuel source in cement kilns and 42,000 tonnes were reused or recycled. In 2017 main growth areas were in equestrian surface materials, carpet tile reuse, carpets for cement kilns to replace fossil fuels and local incineration of municipal solid wastes (MSW). CRUK Director Laurance Bird said: “Our Core Funder manufacturing and distribution members continue to succeed and provide outstanding support to CRUK as well as to their customers. These Core Funders are industry leaders in developing voluntary producer responsibility for carpets throughout their lifecycle. Thanks to their unstinting commitment and support, we are continuing to advance sustainability in this sector and drive growth in recycling capacity.” CRUK’s core funders are Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/Headlam, Brinton Carpets, Desso, ege, Milliken and Balsan. CRUK’s retailer and flooring contractor membership is growing as more companies acknowledge the cost savings and positive sustainability impacts for their businesses. “They appreciate the help from our Core Funders to improve their results, in many cases saving thousands of pounds per year,” continued Laurance. Royal appointment

Products by F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used to create a smooth floor finish as part of the refurbishment of the Royal Voluntary Service building in Hertford. Stopgap Green Bag smoothing underlayment, Stopgap P131 General Purpose primer and Styccobond F44 Acrylic Adhesive, were used to install vinyl flooring throughout the office. Contractor Mark Rutty of MR Project Management & Flooring Services contacted F. Ball and Altro to request donations of materials for the restoration of the charity building. Floor fitter Daniel Sweeney was subcontracted to install 70m2 of flooring in the building, which is home to the charity which helps to enrich the lives of older people across Britain. When Daniel arrived on the site, the old floorcoverings had already been taken up. He began preparing the subfloor by installing Stopgap Green Bag, a fast setting, low odour, protein-free floor smoothing underlayment. The cured product has a high strength, making it suitable in areas subject to both light and heavy-duty traffic. The protein-free composition makes Stopgap Green Bag suitable for use in clinical and biologically sensitive areas. Stopgap P131 General Purpose primer was then installed over the area. Stopgap P131 is a primer designed to promote the adhesion of Stopgap smoothing underlayments to smooth non-absorbent surfaces. Finally, Daniel used Styccobond F44 Acrylic Adhesive to install wood-effect vinyl sheet floorcoverings. A solvent free acrylic emulsion adhesive, Styccobond F44 is designed to give a high bond strength, strong initial tack and a long open time. It is protected against biodegradation and is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating installations. T 01538 361 633

Interior design trends Flooring follows at a respectful distance to changes in interior trends but the gap is getting closer and flooring is responding more quickly to the latest in fabrics, soft furnishing and decor. Two opposite extremes were in evidence in Hannover. Firstly, a trend towards natural garden textures (houseplants, apparently, are back in vogue in a big way!) and with wood decors and green in many shades an increasingly popular choice. There is also a lot of money being made these days in every conceivable type of artificial grass – not only outdoors but in garden rooms and conservatories. The counterpoint is the continuing popularity of concrete – in terms of colour and texture, and not only in hard flooring but in cushion floor and even examples of concrete-styled carpet. "Urban" greys and silvers are everywhere. But away from the abundance of greys and muted pastels, there are signs that brighter, cleaner colours are finding their way into household designs more commonly – although the buzz around purple as the 2018 colour of choice may be a little too much for flooring to take at present! Somewhat surprisingly, there has been a distinct revival in the popularity of marble decor effects across all the smooth flooring types – with a propensity towards white and black designs.

Hard and soft carpet The increasing use of polyester in carpets is a very marked development across several manufacturers who are seeking to perpetuate the popularity of "soft" while underwriting the style with the greater performance of polyester. Meanwhile, more introductions of nylon carpet and the ever improving technology of polypropylene has seen the overall value of synthetic carpet increase. This is a positive sign in a sector that has historically chased the price down, putting quality and performance at risk – now manufacturers are keen to sell consumers a better product for a little more money. There is a sense that the success of “soft” has caused the industry some unforeseen consequences in driving carpet upstairs and encouraging more smooth flooring downstairs. The launch of a number of hard, more robust carpet constructions in 2018 will seek to redress the balance to some extent. Wool loop carpet, already enjoying increased popularity among interior designers, seems also to benefit from the downstairs smooth flooring trend as loop is seen as an attractive, coordinating texture alongside smooth floors. Elsewhere in wool, there is exceptional design on show that adds extra value to the strong credentials of natural fibre.

Smooth success Soft carpet may have helped LVT accelerate its presence in the UK market but the sector doesn't seem to need much encouragement at the moment with strong growth which is reflected in the development of new ranges and the more manufacturers who are extending into LVT. 34 March 2018

UK gets set to adore rigid LVT Adore Floors Adore is one of the most innovative names in LVT in Europe and the US but this year it is all set to step up its presence in the UK with a major marketing operation for its ranges of high performance rigid bamboo core flooring. The Regent collection is designed to be exceptional on several levels but at its heart is the Adore Core of FSC certified bamboo and polymer core composition which offers a denser, stronger and waterproof construction. This rigid core approach allows the floor to be laid across existing floors with excellent dimensional stability and with less acclimatisation required – and it is all 100% recyclable and has a lifetime residential warranty. Above the bamboo is more technology – Adore’s Duramond surface layer which is reinforced against scratches and scrapes and above that is their Cleantech anti-microbial hygienic layer. And yet still there is scope for embossed designs which add to the realism and texture. “These are truly new generation products,” says Paul Brady of Adore. “Distributors and retailers are going to love this as it is a product of which they can be totally confident every time, every installation.” Adore’s confidence is demonstrated by their investment in stockholding and regional distribution in the North and South of the UK and in Ireland with a dedicated UK management team. That commitment is reinforced by the opening of a new warehouse and offices in Belgium and extensive further investment in the production facilities in China where Adore staff will be controlling 15 production lines by the end of 2018 – this is serious capacity.

“These are truly new generation products. Distributors and retailers are going to love this as it is a product of which they can be totally confident every time, every installation” says Paul Brady of Adore Floors

Adore is using this capability to produce a wide collection of rigid core LVT products under the brand name Regent – all currently available in 10 on-trend wood plank and tile decors. The range is available as a dry back product known as the Viceroy which is available with a 0.3 and 0.5mm wear layer. There are then the three click ranges – the entry level product which is known as the Monarch, the Monarch X which has an attached IXPE acoustic underlayment pad and then the Sovereign which is Adore’s top-of-the-range product with a 0.55 wear layer, commercial finish, lifetime waterproof, life-time residential and 15 year commercial warranty with a new angle fold-down locking system. Finally, Adore has high expectations for Envy, its innovative loose-lay product which has been such a success in the US. Envy solves installation problems such as rippling with the use of a tacky back system which stops movement across the floor. “This is very new – it will beat any of the traditional products,” said Paul. The UK marketing push by Adore is being supported by comprehensive new marketing material including new displays, point-of-sale, brochures and video resources. T 0845 6021881 www.uk.adorefloors.com

DOMOTEX 2018 Review - part 2 Developing ambition Condor Carpets Condor Carpets has more visibility in the market than ever thanks to creative new branding and a relentless commitment to the introduction of new products that are carefully judged to meet consumer demand. "We are known for our product development and now we are more ambitious than ever," said Paul Harris and he brought more than a dozen new ranges to Domotex to prove it! The new brand-led approach started at Domotex two years ago with Condor’s new soft-style Intenza collection and sales have gone from strength-tostrength with a range of offers from chunky yarns and textures through to velvets in a good range of attractive colours. Now, polyester is becoming more important in the mix and with the new emphasis comes a new brand, Sensys, which will deliver softness alongside the extra performance and bleach cleanability that is increasingly attracted to the UK consumer and a reliable offer for the retailer. There are likely to be up to 6 ranges from Condor during the year but the debut for Sensys at Domotex was Amore - a finely crafted polyester carpet in two weights, (pictured with Leonie de Jongh of Condor). A distinctive feature of all Condor’s carpets now is their certification to the prestigious Eurofins Gold certification. During last year, the company introduced a new latex backing, manufactured by Condor to a unique formula, to reduce VOCs for improved indoor air quality, independently tested and verified by the Eurofins laboratories. “We are known for our product development and now we are more ambitious than ever” Paul Harris, Condor Carpets.

Boosting the brand Timzo Carpets Timzo Carpets is now a year on from the acquisition by Condor Carpets and are using this extra strength to good effect in developing further its reputation as a world leader in polypropylene loop pile carpets. “Timzo is well established as a highly successful business with a strong brand but the Condor move has given us an extra boost to allow us to expand our market further,” said Paul Meadows, UK sales manager (pictured right). “The new synergies we have in production, purchasing of raw materials and distribution ensure we can continue to be competitive while investing in attractive new products," he added. Evidence of this was on hand at Domotex with the launch of a set of stylish “smallpattern” ranges which offer something fashionably different – Dundee, a neat plaid in seven colours; Panache, a hexagonal design in five colours; and Herringbone, also in five colours. Similarly stylish was the debut of Mosaic, a scroll-effect tenth gauge in seven colours with the look of a shadow cut-and-loop but without that tendency to flatten! And for the ultimate fashionistas, there is the introduction of Natura into the UK in both 4 and 5m widths – a range that has performed very strongly in Germany to meet the trend for a flatweave look but with the construction which doesn't allow pilling or stretching. Domotex was also the debut for a restyled Timzo logo that reflects the family feel of the Condor brand. T +31 (0) 38 385 44 77 www.timzo.nl

Trusted brands Interfloor

Andrew Rajakrishnan (pictured right), International Business Development Manager with CEO John Cooper (left).

Interfloor’s appearance at Domotex exemplified everything that is good about British manufacturing – quality, innovation and an appetite to extend the offer to meet changing customer demand. The company is Europe’s largest manufacturer of flooring accessories and its trusted brands in underlay including Tredaire and Duralay have already conquered a lot of the world, especially in highly demanding environments such as hotels, mosques, cruise liners, airports, stadium and leisure complexes. “Interfloor combines a number of UK and world firsts with some of the U.K.’s oldest flooring brands,” said CEO John Cooper. “Our diverse range of products offers the ideal solution to give the contractor and specifier peace of mind.” At present, about 20% of Interfloor’s production is for export but this is growing steadily and the company has expanded its specialist team to meet the demand, especially for sophisticated, high specification underlay installations. Andrew Rajakrishnan (pictured right with John Cooper) has recently joined the company as International Business Development Manager to sustain the momentum.

The top-selling Tredaire underlays, renowned for their underfoot comfort, and Duralay, the contractors’ brand of choice for more technical applications where there is a requirement for flooring solutions which are hard-wearing, or flame retardant for example were also on show. Also on show in Hannover was Duralay Timbermate, the specialist underlay for laminate and wood flooring which can reduce in-room noise by 30%, and also Duralay Heatflow underlays which have a very low tog rating to allow the walls generated by underfloor heating to pass quickly into the room above for both carpet and wood/laminate flooring. DOMOTEX 2018 Review - part 2 Fashion focus Cavalier Carpets Cavalier Carpets is a close follower of fashion, responding quickly to consumer trends to give retailers the right products at the right time. Right now, it's all about polyester. Domotex demonstrated the approach with the first view of a prototype new polyester range which the company will launch in the UK this summer. The new carpet benefits from the credentials of polyester – a super-soft feel, improved performance, and its cleanability with bleach – but Cavalier have gone a step further with the development of an attractive lustrous yarn, giving the carpet a unique appearance. “We have had a really positive reaction to this new range at Domotex,” says Hans Lowe of Cavalier. “It offers more performance and reliability for the money – but not much more money – and the slightly silky finish is very appealing to consumers at the moment,” he said. Cavalier was using the input of visitors to the show to fine tune the presentation of the carpet prior to its launch in July in 10 colours, and in 4 and 5m widths. Celebrating in style Telenzo Carpets Telenzo is celebrating in style – lots of styles to be precise, for the company that was founded 100 years ago but still drives the market in terms of creativity and quality. Attractive updates to many of the Telenzo bestsellers marked the occasion – along with a sneak preview of a major new collection that will create huge interest in the market when it launches in early summer (all will be revealed in the April issue of The Stocklists!). Telenzo has established a niche for 50/50 wool/polypropylene carpet that do not compromise on quality and its textured loop pile ranges in this mix have proved to be immensely successful. Now, Greenwich and Windsor have been re-coloured with the introduction of three new shades while Hampton Court has been replaced by Eton which has a more complex cross-stitch construction in six new colours to offer a more sophisticated appearance. Meanwhile, Mainline, a well-established Telenzo best-seller, is building on its strength in the market with four new colours – two in the two-tone style and two in its multi-stripe option – the company has looked at some of the most successful colours in the Barbican range to select the new options. “We have a new fresh approach and are being more ambitious about colour,” says Mark Rooney of Telenzo. Grass roots Ball & Young

Spring has almost sprung so it is the season for consumers to start thinking about not cutting their grass!

DOMOTEX 2018 Review - part 2 Design debut Flair Rugs For the first time in its history, Flair Rugs exhibited at the world’s largest flooring exhibition, Domotex, developing business from across Europe. Presenting the stunning styles of Luxmi and the Inspired by V&A Collection, alongside selected designs from the Simplicity and Core ranges, Flair Rugs demonstrated its commitment to export business in a significant move. “Our attendance at Domotex provided us with an opportunity to show the breadth of our portfolio to retailers from across Europe, and the rest of the world,” explained Sinead Donohoe, head of marketing, Flair Rugs. “Growing export business is part of our long-term business strategy and we are delighted to receive such a warm response to our rugs from retailers visiting the show.” Showcasing great-value styles relevant to the European region, including the outdoor-ready Florence, flatweave Verona and the bold Infinite collection, Flair Rugs also demonstrated its ability to create premium styles with Solitaire, from the Luxmi collection, certainly catching the eye of many visitors. Standing by style Granorte

Fresh thinking Lano

In a hugely stylish masterpiece of stand design, created by famed Italian interior designer, Marco Carini, Granorte demonstrated to Domotex’s 45,000 visitors that cork is in the ascendancy.

As always, the presence of Lano proved a showcase of carpet for home and business, with the Belgian company demonstrating its manufacturing flexibility and technical innovation.

With a refreshed and more compact collection for 2018, Granorte showed excellence in cork product design, harnessing the natural material’s aesthetic and performance qualities to deliver innovative flooring products. One of the highlights included the availability of Kenko on selected styles, a 0.25mm polymer wear layer that is PVC and plasticizer-free. Made in Japan, Kenko means Granorte products use 10-times less plastic than equivalent vinyl/HDF floors.

Continuing the high-impact visual identity established at last year’s show, Lano presented its fibre brand concepts – Halcyon, Essenz and Touchdown – as well as the premium X Collection, underlining its capabilities of producing greatvalue PP ranges to the very finest wool and nylon qualities.

Alongside technical innovation, Granorte’s stand showcased the wonderful natural aesthetic of cork, covered from head-to-toe in the varieties produced by the manufacturer, from high-texture raw bark through to refined classic looks. “Cork really is a wonderful material to work with,” explains Paulo Rocha, R&D, Granorte. “Through our manufacturing technologies we can hone it into a remarkable number of different looks and textures. Yet it is more than just aesthetics that make it a great choice and cork offers acoustic absorption, thermal insulation and great underfoot comfort. As people increasingly focus on the future of our planet and search for better flooring materials; the combination of sustainable natural material, unusual aesthetics and great performance are making cork an increasingly popular choice.” T 01785 711131 www.granorte.co.uk

“As Europe’s biggest event for the flooring industry, we always try to bring fresh ideas to Domotex and this year proved no different,” explains Birger Karlsson, sales & marketing director. “From new colours in the classic look of Pembridge Twist right up to the European launch of Halcyon, our new polyester fibre collection, there was something to interest every visitor to this year’s show. We received a really positive and warming response to these new developments and are looking forward to seeing them in stores throughout the UK soon.” The value-driven Fairfield Creations was shown for the first time in its 2018 palette including five brand new heather colourways and a refined collection of coordinating stripes, for a total of 12 plains and two pinstripe styles. Elsewhere in the residential collection, the X Collection showed three new supersoft nylon styles and colour updates to Mayfair Velvet, Satine and Oasis. For commercial projects, the enduring Scala Twist was shown with its updated impervious foam backing offering improved performance in healthcare, education and leisure environments in 20 practical yet home-like colours. Rounding out the innovations at Domotex, Lano presented two new Easy Lawn artificial grass styles and the brand new Pro Lawn range for premium duties. T 00800 5266 5266 www.lano.com

Irresistable rugs Louis de Poortere Louis De Poortere’s attendance at Domotex resulted in an extraordinarily busy stand as, along with updates to existing collections, the manufacturer launched the Antiquarian collection and showed the results of its collaboration with Romo Group. The stunning Antiquarian fuses traditional designs with worn-effects for a collection of antique looking qualities rich in colour and exquisite in detail. Three styles form the range, each in a series of colourways inspired by the original design and reinterpreted for today’s homes. Drawing on designs from the Louis de Poortere archive with the Persian pattern of Heriz, the Iranian Bakhtiari and the manufacturer’s very own Hadschlu, Antiquarian sets itself apart as a stand-out collection in the world of machine-made rugs. Crafted from 100% cotton chenille and handfinished for the distressed effect, the Antiquarian collection is available in a range of sizes. Feedback received at Domotex suggests that it will be a hugely popular collection for Louis de Poortere: “The response we received to Antiquarian was nothing short of extraordinary and we are expecting big things for this launch,” explains Alan Russell, sales director UK. “Worn-effects are big news in rugs right now and these qualities also celebrate iconic patterns that carry a sense of familiarity. It’s a vintage look that’s somehow modern and appropriate in any setting. The result is a blend that seems to be irresistible, so we are working hard to make sure we’ll be able to keep up with demand.” Launched late last year, the Romo and Villa Nova collections also appeared on the Belgian manufacturer’s stand. Renowned for its wallpaper and fabric designs, Romo has worked with Louis de Poortere to create an exquisite collection of hand-tufted and flatweave rugs based on some of its most recognisable designs. Part of the same group, Villa Nova is a British brand with a philosophy of creating stylish wallcoverings, fabrics and accessories. The brand’s collection with Louis de Poortere continues this philosophy, again in hand-tufted and flatweave qualities. The company also used Domotex to exhibit Haute Couture, a sublime collection of carpets and custom runners and rugs. Made in Brussels weave from 100% wool, cotton/wool and cotton/polyamide blends, Haute Couture provides a neatly packaged premium carpet concept that’s typically Louis de Poortere. Heavenly sent Balta The European launch of the Made in Heaven and Odyssey brands proved a catalyst for a really busy Domotex for Balta as it quickly settled into its new location. With a stand impressive in its diversity of brand and product offer, Balta underlined its position as Europe’s largest carpet manufacturer to an audience of 45,000 trade visitors from over 100 countries. Alongside the Made in Heaven and Odyssey residential broadloom launches, the company showed its expanding Leonis collection, introductions to the iconic StainSafe range and welcomed Pro Nature, a flatweave rated for commercial use. Satino too saw expansion, while the introduction of a new range of premium Luxury Carpet Tiles in nylon or polypropylene meant plenty new to see for customers. “As the world’s leading flooring show, this year with a record 106,000m2 of exhibition stands, our attendance at Domotex helps us to position ourselves among the best global flooring brands,” says Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director. “As such, it is a major focal point of our product cycle and this year we were delighted to present two brands capitalising on the latest generations of stain-resistant fibre for the home with Made in Heaven and Odyssey.” Representing the changing status of synthetic fibres as the go-to yarns across every price-point, Made in Heaven and Odyssey are set to be key components in the product mix for 2018. In Made in Heaven, Balta has perfected a solution-dyed polyester yarn, while in Odyssey, it draws on hardwearing solution-dyed nylon. Both offering lasting fade-free colour and luxurious comfort, these new carpets are set to take Europe by storm. T +32 56 62 22 11 www.baltagroup.com

Carpet Recycling UK award winner Neil Green has recently expanded his carpet recycling business Green Birch Environmental into a 77000 square foot mill in Doncaster with plans to become the UK’s largest carpet recycler. MD Neil Green comments, “Having been involved with the carpet recycling industry for many years we felt the time was right to move into a building that enables us to expand the business and increase our capacity to recycle and re-use up to 40000 tonnes of carpet waste per year”. “With improvements in technology, there are now even more carpet recycling innovations available to us which makes the cost to recycle significantly lower than sending carpet and underlay waste to landfill so as well as being environmentally beneficial we’ll also save our customers money on their waste disposal costs so it’s a win win scenario.

With an improved softer feel, more choice than ever before and a 10-year stain and wear warranty, the revamped Sensation Heathers from Cormar Carpets is set to cause a stir among retailers and consumers.

Now available in two weights – ‘Original’ and ‘New Feeling’ – like its sister collection Sensation, easy clean Sensation Heathers is a heavyweight carpet tufted on 1/8th gauge using the two-fold specialised yarn to create a lustrous, luxurious handle. Dirt and stain resistant and bleach cleanable, it is available in both four and five metre widths and is expected to retail from £24 per sq m. In line with consumer demand and trends, we’ve overhauled the colour bank to introduce more contemporary neutrals and greys to the mix - such as ‘Riga Surf ’ and ‘Bergen Frost’.” All Cormar’s stain resistant polypropylene carpets, wool twists, wool loop carpets are produced on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet. Flower on Flooring Adding up the extras to boost the bottom line

Stairrods’ Bendybull, launched at last September’s Harrogate Show

In addition to providing customers with a wide range of flooring options, independent retailers have an increasing number of additional products to include to extend the benefits to customers and enjoy additional sales revenue.

Proof of this can be seen in the rapid growth in sales for Stairrods’ new Bendybull, launched at last September’s Harrogate Show, initially used as a domestic install with LVT.

The company has progressed its installation videos to include safety flooring scribed around the nosing to allow for a 30-point LRV (see picture). Taking the Bendybull one step further, Stairrods now combines this with safety flooring and carpet tiles, using 6mm plywood under the safety flooring and 4mm plywood on the remainder of the tread to form a well for the carpet tiles.

Advantages of the product now include: looks less commercial; no template charge; no site meeting to template; no week-long wait for the curved nosing; no second meeting to see if it fits; and less chance of mistakes.

Stairrods states it is also working on a new stick down matwell for dryback, taking into account various thicknesses of plywood and latex, aiming for production in April. It is additionally testing a new double naplock, using a totally different design to meet with current underlay thicknesses, with early tests using a power stretcher at a door way proving to be encouraging.

“You’ve sold them the floor. Now clever solutions from Stroolmount.co.uk give you add-on sales by helping to prevent damage to all types of flooring and furniture,” says Stroolmount’s Gill Finch.

“The trade and customers invest a fortune in quality flooring and furniture, so it makes sense to spend a few pence protecting it. We’ve saved companies thousands in costly repairs, replacements and insurance claims with simple solutions costing as little as 1p.”

Options include: Furni-Glides (self-adhesive or screw into very heavy furniture so it slides easily across carpet); Quickclick glides (awardwinning, long-term, click-in interchangeable and replacement base glides help protect wood, laminate, vinyl, carpet and tiled floors); selfadhesive felts (short-term high quality anti-scratch solution to cushion floors from heavy furniture); move it pads (temporary solution so anyone can easily glide heavy furniture across hard floors and carpet like magic).

“The trade and customers invest a fortune in quality flooring and furniture, so it makes sense to spend a few pence protecting it.”

Sebo says good customer care is vital to gain and retain customers. For flooring retailers, selling one of the most expensive household purchases, it is particularly important.

Floor care advice is essential and can prevent costly disputes and loss of reputation. The company further explains it has been supporting the flooring industry for over 30 years.

Recommended by leading carpet manufacturers, Sebo vacuum cleaners are often used by them to resolve carpet issues, frequently due to incorrect or poor vacuuming. The company has extensively tested many carpets on their behalf to make sure that good advice is given.

“With an innovative new sales program which allows carpet retailers to sell Sebo vacuum cleaners with a low outlay, perhaps now is the time to focus on floor care. Because professional floor care advice can lead not just to selling vacuum cleaners, but also to selling more flooring,” it states. Clever solutions from Stroolmount 46 March 2018

The POS debate “Good customer care is vital to gain and retain customers. For flooring retailers, selling one of the most expensive household purchases, it is particularly important.”

Packexe says with most interior improvement projects, freshly laid flooring is usually followed by decorating walls, installing fixtures and fittings or moving furniture. This hugely increases the risk of new wooden floors, tiles or carpets becoming dirty and damaged before they are even unveiled for everyday use.

Packexe offers a range of protective films and dispensing systems that can guard against decorating disasters and help customers keep their new floors fresh while work is carried out.

The company states that its Hardfloor and Carpet are established products for the flooring trade and its newest additions, the lowslip, impact protection Fleece sheet and the slimline, perforated edging product Edge complete its flooring protection offering for all eventualities. “Packexe products come with space-saving point of display stands and provide a common sense add-on purchase for all new floor customers,” the company concludes.

Point-of-sale represents one of the most expensive costs in the flooring industry and flooring suppliers are keen to get your floor space working as hard as possible for your benefit and to get a return on their investment.

But is it working hard enough? Your retail floor space is a competitive battleground to catch the consumers attention and it’s a difficult sales environment to get right. Is your store cluttered with redundant tombolas and lecterns that aren’t earning their keep? Do manufacturers come up with enough ideas to keep it fresh? Do you have to wait for the display material you need for the latest launch? Would you like more advice on store layout and merchandising?

BUSINESS NEWS CBI cites major slump in sales

Industry concerns about a poor start to 2018 have been underlined by a startling report from the Confederation of British Industry which said retail sales in the sector were down 70% in January. The CBI Distributive Trades Survey said that while retail sales grew overall in the first month of the year, furniture and carpets plummeted 72%. CBI head of economic intelligence Anna Leach said: “Household spending will remain under pressure this year from higher inflation and low wage growth, which will continue to weigh on sales growth in the retail sector.”

Figures from the British Retail Consortium for the three months to the end of January include the traditionally strong period of pre-Christmas trading but still showed a decline of 1.2% in non-food retail sales – its worst slump since the EU referendum. The BRC report, prepared with KPMG, said consumers had “shunned big ticket purchases” in favour of essential food buying during the period. Helen Dickinson, the BRC chief executive, said: “The persisting tough trading environment played out at the start of the year with a mixed set of trading updates.” March 2018 47

Doing the business for flooring Successful show sees £500m worth of sales and several floor industry launches The January Furniture Show lived up to its status as the scene-setter for the interiors sector for the year ahead as 21,000 trade visitors headed for Birmingham's NEC – organisers said £500 million worth of orders were placed at the show. “JFS is all about doing great business,” said Cleere Scamell, Event Director. “Ensuring that will always remain the focus for the show and it is about making sure that every potential buyer in the trade knows that they need to be with us for the event in January. Thank you to all our exhibitors and visitors for another successful show in 2018.” And among more than 500 exhibitors, there was a strong representation in the Flooring Showcase within Hall 2 which included industry leaders such as Abingdon, Associated Weavers, Ball & Young, Distinctive, Furlong, SMG and Westex. The flooring exhibitors reported brisk business and a strong turnout from retailers and interiors buyers at the event and they used the occasion for the launch of important new products. Associated Weavers unveiled their new polyester twist Softissimo – “the ultimate in softness” (see page 49) – while at Furlong it was the debut for the new, highly competitive Charm range of soft-touch polyproylene twists (page 51). Westex Carpets gained strong interest for the launch of Silken Velvet, their luxurious sheeny velvet in high-spec nylon and the re-colouring of their popular Westend 80/20 velvet (page 49) and Abingdon announced a cut-length service for two of 2017’s most popular roll ranges, Pure Indulgence and Grandé (page 52).

In the LVT sector, Natural Solutions showed off Sirona, a smart new entry-level product to get retailers into LVT (page 51). At Distinctive Flooring, new and impressive point-of-sale displays were launched to drive the success of Timeless – the latest, elegant LVT that sold so strongly in Q4 last year (page 50).

Silken surprise Westex Carpets Retailers respect the uncompromising quality that is the watchword of Westex carpets but they usually expect it in wool – now the company has delivered the same high standard in their first man-made product for nearly 20 years. The Silken Velvet collection is a luxurious sheen velvet manufactured from a top specification polyamide nylon 6.6 two-fold yarn for exemplary performance. With exceptional softness and a subtle sheen, Silken Velvet comes in 20 colours and is available in multi-width from 1m through to 5m. “We have used the very best technology to create a distinctively different velvet carpet with a special feel,” says Westex sales director Mark Vale. “We’re very confident that retailers and consumers are going to love this collection.” Meanwhile Westex continues to be one of the top go-to wool houses where their complete vertical integration from fleece to floor gives them an edge in maintaining superb quality. The company is promoting nine new colours that have been added to the popular Westend Velvet collection in 80/20 with nylon and also notes the increasing popularity of their 100% wool Natural Loop carpets – "Consumers are finding that wool loop coordinates very well alongside LVT flooring so, to some extent, these sectors are growing together," says Mark.

The ultimate in softness Associated Weavers You have seen soft, and super-soft – and now there is Softissimo! The latest launch by Associated Weavers marks their march into polyester as an increasingly popular fibre for the soft sector and given that the company have become the benchmark for product development in this market, Softissimo is set to be another winner. “This is the ultimate in softness but with performance built in and with a brighter, more fashionable colour range,” said Jonathan Davies of AW. “We had a great reaction to it in Hannover and the people who have seen it here already at the show have loved it so Softissimo has got off to a great start,” he added. This range, which has 8 colours and is 4/5m, joins the two new polyester saxonies which AW launched at Domotex in January under their Invictus brand as the Aquarius collection – Dorado and Indus both available in 14 colours and have the multi width option of 2, 2.5, 3, 4 and 5m. In Birmingham, AW were also showing the key launches of new heathers and a saxony in the family-friendly Vivendi collection and the new colours in the popular Invictus range, Sirius. Fresh approach SMG SMG arrived at the NEC in Birmingham with a bright, fresh new look to their branding – and with a bright, fresh approach to the business of group buying for its retail members. SMG are the largest buying group in the flooring sector with 315 members and 385 stores and also claim the lowest membership fees – but the best bit is the benefits! “Our members get access to all our approved suppliers’ product range through SMG’s own account – members do not need a direct account with the suppliers,” said Mike Reed, the group’s head of operations. “We do not interfere if a member already has a sweet deal set up with the supplier, but we can make sure that they get a great deal with everyone else too.” SMG’s marketing manager Linda Thomas added: “People can absolutely maintain their independence but boost their bottom line. The more you deal with wholesalers, the more you would benefit from joining us – we can beat the wholesalers on price.” T 0118 932 3832

Timeless classic Distinctive Flooring It seems no time at all since Timeless was first seen at the Harrogate show last September but pre-Christmas sales backed up the company's confidence in this elegant, “timeless” LVT and it starts 2018 as a best-seller. Available in seven wood and eight stone decors, Timeless has an intricate registered embossed surface for complete authenticity. “This is a beautifully featured range and sets a high standard when presented in store which consumers have really appreciated,” said Distinctive’s Jay Taylor. That impression is enhanced by the impressive point-of-sale display which presents large samples and these are cleverly lit from the top and the bottom to show the texture and detail in these designs at their very best. Charm offensive Furlong Flooring Furlong is setting the pace in the mainstream soft-touch market with a strong start to 2018 which builds further on the success of their Regency saxony and twist collections. The launch of the Essenzo brand last year accelerated the success with the additional performance and quality it offers in the soft sector. “Retailers have really responded well and Essenzo has unstoppable momentum now as we start the New Year,” said Neil Valentine of Furlong Flooring. “It is a great product backed up by exceptional service across the country so we are confident that retailers can count on this as a reliable best-seller.” A new entry-level soft-touch polypropylene twist made its debut at the January Flooring Show – Charm is rolling out to retailers now at an economical price-point and in 10 colours. Retailers rely on Sirona LVT Natural Solutions For carpet retailers who are wanting to get into LVT but don't want the hassle of hard flooring, here comes Sirona to make life just a little bit easier. Sirona LVT is an entry-level product from Natural Solutions, the smooth flooring division of Furlong Flooring – a company that has built its reputation on giving retailers what they can sell successfully so Sirona ticks all the boxes. Available in 20 authentic wood and tile designs, the range has a Super Guard PU layer to improve its durability and enable the product to have a 12-year wear warranty. Sirona has a 4-edge micro bevel and can be supplied in click and dryback formats. In many cases it can even be installed over existing floors. “These days a retailer cannot just be a carpet shop,” says Richard Richman of Natural Solutions (pictured top right). “You have to sell yourself to the consumer as a flooring specialist in order to make sure you don't miss any sale. Sirona is the kind of product you can rely on to extend your range,” he said. T 01322 628 707 www.furlongflooring.co.uk

Review 2018 Hard and soft success Abingdon Flooring Abingdon have been on a roll with two of their best sellers for 2017 – literally – but now it is time for these two popular roll-only ranges to meet the demand for a cut-length service in 2018. Pure Indulgence has been so successful that the company has been quick to add new colours to their cuts offer to make 12 options in total. With a deep polyester pile, this carpet offers soft luxury alongside bleach cleanability with the confidence of a 15-year wear warranty. Similarly, Grandé is a soft touch luxury twist which was launched at Harrogate on rolls but will now be offered as cut lengths due to the popularity and performance of its compact, dense highly twisted yarn. In an intriguing departure from the prevailing fashion, Abingdon will be promoting a “hard and soft” offer on a lectern package with soft Grandé on one side and the latest Stainfree Country Life on the other. A robust, textured heather saxony in polypropylene, Country Life is a four-colour yarn with an open structure that lets the colour and texture “burst out” very attractively – and it's a tough construction. “Amazingly, not everybody wants soft everywhere!” joked Abingdon's Martin Peace. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 58

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS March 2018

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.greendalecarpets.co.uk Contact: Rob Harding Tel: 01432 852000 Fax: 01432 852005 rharding@greendalecarpets.co.uk

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 60

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

F L O O R I N G FAC T S H E E T WOOL FIBRE

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain. British wool is bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to a carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 Wool Rich – Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Benefits of Wool Carpet 1. Practical

4. Internal Environment

Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

2. Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency.

Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production.

3. Safety

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

5. Eco/Environmental

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 65
