THE STOCKLISTS March 2022
WE CARE ABOUT OUR PLANET... HOW ABOUT YOU? Sustainability is at the heart of AW’s product development. Our company is increasingly opting for recycled materials for its products, thus helping to raise awareness by encouraging consumers to make eco-conscious choices. With Sedna®, AW is the first to put a super-soft carpet made with Econyl® yarn on the market. Econyl® yarn is a high performance nylon that’s made from waste materials such as discarded fishing nets, old carpets & production waste. Recovered from all over the world, this waste is regenerated through a depolymerisation process which ensures it has the same purity and performance as virgin nylon.
AND YES! A SEDNA® CARPET MADE FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS IS JUST AS HIGH QUALITY AS A CARPET MADE FROM VIRGIN MATERIAL!
DON’T HESITATE TO JOIN US ON OUR MISSION! SEDNA® THUS HELPS TO SAVE THOUSANDS OF BEAUTIFUL SEA CREATURES LIKE SEA TURTLES, DOLPHINS AND SEALS THAT WILL NO LONGER GET STUCK IN THIS LIFETHREATENING WASTE.

Rugs debut with distinction Louis de Poortere has launched its Rugs 2022 Collection, including 47 inspiring and brand-new designs alongside enduring classics and a new circular option in suitable designs. With the new Structures, Meditation and Nuance, as well as additions to the existing Gallery, Mad Men and Atlantic; the new Louis de Poortere Rugs 2022 collection refreshes one of the most popular rug collections in the independent flooring retail sector. Alan Russell, sales director UK, says: “We’re pleased to launch our 2022 collection, welcoming some fabulous new designs to an extraordinary range that has led the way in balancing accessible pricing with quality and design for many years. There are few makers in Europe that can offer such a distinct collection while still achieving a price point that lets design and craftmanship be widely enjoyed.” Alongside the new collections with exquisite high, low weaves, dazzling colours inspired by coral reefs and patterns inspired by the Bauhaus movement, Louis de Poortere has also introduced a new shape to the collection. A circular rug is now available on selected designs in a 240cm diameter, bringing even more choice for customers. The new Rugs 2022 Collection brochure can now be downloaded from the company’s website – at nearly 300 pages, it is testament to the depth of Louis de Poortere’s made in Belgium rug programme.

FLOORINGNEWS Chateau chic with laminate Inspired by the parquet floors of grand houses, BerryAlloc’s updated Chateau collection makes luxury accessible. Now, with four classic laying patterns and 15 wood decors, the updated Chateau laminate floor collection by BerryAlloc brings more freedom of expression than ever. From the timeless elegance of herringbone to shipdeck, mosaic and ladder in any combination of the collection’s original wood effects, Chateau lets homes reference the past, adding modern style for a look that’s completely unique. Following the trend or stepping out with a different pattern, this is a collection all about creativity. Scott Arundell, Sales Director UK, comments: “The popularity of herringbone is hard to ignore and has certainly fuelled interest in a more artful approach to flooring in the home. As a result, homeowners are interested in how they might be able to put their own stamp on their floor, showing it off as a feature rather than just a neutral backdrop. The multiple laying options and décor combinations of Chateau lets them do this, while delivering the affordability and practicality of laminate flooring.” Whatever Chateau pattern is decided upon, four-sided bevels add definition for a more authentic effect and the 15-strong palette is wideranging too. From the contemporary feel of Chestnut White to daring Charme Black and the tropical red of Merbau Brown or Teak Brown, Chateau’s decors ensure it’s easy to get a look that’s out of the ordinary.
“ The popularity of herringbone is hard to ignore and has certainly fuelled interest in a more artful approach to flooring in the home.” BerryAlloc’s durable and scratch-resistant laminate construction means that Chateau is perfect for today’s homes. Easy to clean, safe from pets and with a lifetime residential warranty, Chateau ticks all the boxes of a practical family floor. What’s more, Chateau’s 8mm laminate construction is affordable, making its regal parquet look more accessible than ever. Just like every BerryAlloc laminate collection, Chateau is supported by a full range of perfectly matched accessories to keep a premium feel, with Excellence Plus acoustic underlay also helping to combat walking sound. Made in Belgium and PEFC certified, Chateau is an eye-catching floor that proves true style never dates.

FLOORINGNEWS Hitting flooring for six When The Oval cricket ground recently underwent a major extension, Bostik was on hand to provide subfloor preparation products and technical advice to ensure the flooring could be installed to the highest possible standard in time for a high-profile event. The Oval was seeking to add two new upper-tier decks that would increase its capacity by 4,000 seats, as well as a new hospitality area including lounges, a roof terrace, a retail space and a new ticket office. Duchy suite Mark Butcher room
Northants Flooring was appointed by main contractor Buckingham Group to install the flooring as part of the £28m project. Their team turned to favoured supplier Bostik due to the trust they had in its technical expertise and first-class subfloor preparation products. Based on Bostik’s recommendations, Northants Flooring removed protruding joint adhesive and ensured that the entire subfloor was dust and contaminant-free before starting to apply the preparation products. In the few wet areas of the subfloor, the flooring contractor used Bostik HYTEC E570 ONE COAT, the company’s two-part, solventfree, epoxy surface DPM, which contains the exact quantities of resin and hardener ready for mixing and has been developed to work with calcium sulphate screeds up to 87% RH. Next, Northants Flooring primed the subfloor with Bostik GRIP A936 XPRESS, a water-based primer with high grip and a fast drying time. The next step was to apply SL C500 ULTIMATE, Bostik’s twopart smoothing compound. Made up of a blend of cements and aggregates combined with special additives, the self-smoothing SL C500 ULTIMATE provides excellent workability and flow characteristics and can be trowelled to a feather edge. Finally, the flooring contractor applied Bostik’s FIX A320 TACK adhesive in the lounge area and the Prince of Wales Suite, ahead of installing the carpet tiles, as well as Bostik Roll adhesive tape for the capping and coving throughout the project. Ross Holt, Director at Northants Flooring, comments: “We’ve got a great relationship with Bostik, and our fitters love their products. Even though there were no major issues on this job, their advice was once again crucial to helping us install the flooring to the right standard.”

The versatility of tile styles Providing unrivalled design choice and installation versatility, we take a look at the latest styles and material specifications available in tile formats. More than ever, today’s homes are an expression of our individuality and many of us are choosing to style our interiors to reflect our personality and our aspirations. Incorporating tactile materials such as stone, wood, wool and ceramics not only adds interest but also links us to the health-giving benefits of the natural world outside.
Like all Karndean floors, Korlok is a practical choice for busy modern homes with a hard wearing, waterproof surface that’s easy to keep hygienically clean. The large tiles (18” x 24”) are ideal for open plan spaces and feature an enhanced acoustic layer which helps to reduce noise transfer to rooms below by 21dB. Korlok’s rigid core format and 5G click locking mechanism makes this a floor that can be fitted quickly even over imperfect sub-floors and is completed with a colour matched scotia. Cork tiles have been making their mark on interior design since the 1920s. A resurgence in popularity can be attributed to its sustainable and eco-friendly credentials, while the natural aesthetic lends itself well to contemporary design.
Granorte offers a range of tiles that celebrate this unique material’s natural aesthetics, tones, and nuances. Its Naturals and Tradition collections stand testimony to the variety of finishes that can be achieved, from chunky, rustic cork patterns to light and dark colour finishes; each provides the scope and adaptability to be incorporated into modern and traditional home design.
Karndean Designflooring – Korlok Collection in Volcantic Black
“Korlok is a practical choice for busy modern homes with a hard wearing, waterproof surface that’s easy to keep hygienically clean.” Stella Coyle, national retail sales manager of Karndean Designflooring, said: “Whether your customer is looking to complement a gentle earthy scheme with artisan textures, an adventurous vibrant palette and fresh playful accessories or a surprising combination of bold colours and quirky shapes, a stone design floor can bring seemingly disparate aspects together into a seamless and stylish result. “Our Korlok range presents a stone collection inspired by the design possibilities of limestone. Frosted Stone, Karndean Designflooring – with its cool silver tones Korlok Collection in Metro Grey and clear veining, will add fresh tones to a pared back scheme while vibrant colours will pop against the unobtrusive and versatile mid-grey hues of Metro Grey. For eclectic schemes in bold colours, the striking charcoal-grey of Volcanic Black will bring a sense of balance.” 36
Granorte – Cork Tiles
Granorte’s cork tiles are created using cork typically discarded as part of the wine-bottling process. The result is a range of water-resistant and hardwearing floors with a strong sustainability message. Interior trends for 2022 bring together our need for comforting familiarity and joyful adventure. To be more expressive and emotional, as we reconnect with a world that felt closed to us last year, and a time to make bolder colour choices and embrace more patterns. Harvey Maria is seeing the following flooring trends begin to emerge which reflects these themes. Colour Positivity: Decorating with joyful colours from pastels to brights are all predicted to be big this year. Terracotta and baked earth tones that imbue a sense of cosiness are here to stay, as are natural neutrals blues, greens, browns & hints of yellow. Chequerboard Pattern: Harvey Maria has a large selection of plain coloured floor tiles that can be used to create all chequerboard patterns - everything goes this year and they are seeing fabulous schemes that go way beyond the classic black & white.

Meaning you can enjoy the look of stone without the high maintenance. Additionally, the Amtico room visualiser allows you to see how tiles could transform your home - helping consumers to buy with added confidence. Mexico has a history of hand-crafted tiles, and part of Abingdon Flooring’s Mexico collection focuses on “Mexican Maiolica” or Talavera inspired artisanal tile-effect floors. Using the principle of celebrating pattern and colour, it incorporates a modern palette of dusty pastels, bold colours, and monochromatic tones with eye-catching designs to suit contemporary interior trends.
Harvey Maria’s Check and Dovetail designs work this trend in slightly smaller spaces, and can also be used to create and define ‘Spaces to escape’ such as Book Nooks, or to inject some luxe into a small laundry or utility area. Harvey Maria has just launched a stylish new LVT collection - Parquet 2.0 - created in collaboration with Neisha Crosland. This brand new series of colourways celebrate the classic geometric design, and introduces a contemporary palette with a reversed pattern. FLOORINGNEWS Recofloor milestone achievement A whopping 6,000 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring has been collected through Recofloor since the scheme was founded in 2009 by leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro. Offering a sustainable collection service for commercial waste vinyl flooring, the material is recycled back into new flooring, as well as traffic calming products. For post-consumer waste, Recofloor is regarded as a great example of the circular economy in construction. To date, Recofloor’s collection of 6,000 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring has produced 7,038 tonnes of carbon savings – equivalent to taking 1,837 cars off the road for a year. It also equates to two million square metres of vinyl flooring having been recycled – enough to cover 276 football pitches. The carbon savings estimate is based on displacing concrete in traffic management products, the primary application for the recycled flooring.
“ Recofloor’s collection of 6,000 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring which equates to two million square metres of vinyl flooring having been recycled – enough to cover 276 football pitches.” On the significant environmental milestone reached in January 2022, Recofloor Scheme Manager Carla Eslava comments: “It is a magnificent achievement that truly reflects the enthusiasm, engagement and commitment of our members. Well done to all our collectors! Despite the on-going challenges, our participants, contractors and distributors have continued to support and grow the scheme across the UK. Thanks to them, we look forward to celebrating our next collection milestone.” Polyflor’s Sustainability Market Manager, Sonia Goode says: “We are proud to be green, and especially proud of our Recofloor members who are working hard and contributing to our vision to reduce carbon emissions across all of our operations. Recycling waste vinyl through Recofloor is a key aspect to achieve this.”

Robin was born in Kidderminster, of course, and the carpet town shaped his destiny. He left school to join Tomkinsons with his cousin, Jim Bennett and went on to work for Cheshires of Nottingham where he was a representative covering the Lancashire area.
However, during training courses at the Academy, installers learn that not paying sufficient attention to expansion can lead to failure of an otherwise perfect LVT installation.
After four years, he went to work at Axminster Carpets where he was a representative in the Midlands initially and that was the start of a highly successful career at the iconic Devon company. Robin retired as Axminster’s sales director 42 years later. “Robin was a real gentleman and a leader of the industry – always professional, highly knowledgeable and with a ready smile and a twinkle in his eye that will be remembered fondly by all who met him over those many years,” said David Spragg, editor of The Stocklists. Robin was known as a great socialiser and a true friend of many inside and outside the flooring industry. He was also a proud family man and was married to Barbara for 58 years and they have two sons, Jonathan and Matthew, and four grandchildren. Robin had many sporting interests including hockey, cricket, golf and horse racing. He loved his pint of Bathams Bitter which he often enjoyed in the company of his good friends, Tony Hardwick, Peter Harris, Charles Townsend and Jim Bennett.

With LVT susceptible to subfloor condition and the ambient environment, correct preparation and selection are a significant factor in the long-term viability of the installation. While the catastrophic consequences of not allowing sufficient expansion gaps at perimeters with wood flooring are well known, there is less knowledge surrounding LVT floors and the issue of movement.
Lee Thompson, procurement and technical manager explains: “Just like other floors such as laminate and wood, LVT must be given sufficient room to move. Almost entirely constructed from PVC, LVT is susceptible to changes in ambient conditions, expanding and contracting as the room heat and cools. “The thermoplastic property’s of LVT is why using some conventional click PVC floors in conservatories is a bad idea. The floor softens under extreme heat and failing to use the correct underlayment not only causes settling and pronounced telegraphing but also weakening the click joints to the point of failure. Fortunately, at one of the Academy’s training courses, you can learn how to stop failures and protect the long-term integrity of your LVT installation, as well as avoiding costly remedial work. And these courses are often cheaper and far less damaging to your reputation than just one failure due to poor installation.

FLOORINGNEWS Doubling down on recycling F. Ball and Co. Ltd. is redoubling its efforts to reduce the amount of plastic waste produced by the flooring industry by expanding the F. Ball bucket and bottle recycling scheme, which provides contractors with a convenient way to recycle packaging for many of its products. The amplified initiative will double the number of locations at distributor partners across the UK where contractors can effortlessly dispose of empty recyclable F. Ball buckets and bottles in branded receptacles, for free. F. Ball has introduced recyclable packaging for a number of products, with much of the new packaging itself manufactured from recycled materials, allowing it to be reprocessed multiple times. These include recyclable ‘eco pouches’ for its floor repair and finishing compounds, which require significantly less plastic to produce than the products’ previous packaging, and fully recyclable versions of five and 20 litre plastic bottles used for liquids, including primers and tackifiers.
“ As a business, we have a responsibility to strive for sustainability and limit the impact our activities have on the environment,” Commenting on the scheme, F. Ball sales director Darren Kenyon said: “As a business, we have a responsibility to strive for sustainability and limit the impact our activities have on the environment, including reducing both the resources that we consume and the waste that we produce. Accordingly, and in compliance with ISO 14001 standards, the company evaluates the entire life cycle of its products when looking for ways to be more sustainable. In line with this, we are making it as easy as possible for flooring contractors to recycle the packaging used for our products. T 01538 361 633

Flooring construction goes circular Growing interest in environmental issues is putting pressure on the construction sector to move towards a circular economy with greater emphasis on the sustainable recovery of waste materials. Carla Eslava, Manager of the Recofloor commercial waste vinyl flooring collection scheme, says that In the construction sector, what happens to many products at end-of-life is typically not considered due to their longer lifespans and the need to meet strict technical performance criteria. The construction industry is the UK’s biggest consumer of natural resources. According to DEFRA, an estimated 120 million tonnes of construction, demolition and excavation (CD&E) waste was produced in 2016. Waste is generated during the construction and installation phases and when products reach the end of their life. While many materials, such as PVC and metals, are recyclable, the construction sector is a challenging diverse environment for waste management and requires a heavy reliance on engaging with contractors to collect these recoverable resources.
“By capturing more waste at the installation phase and developing a viable recycling route, it is more likely in the future we will be able to develop more solutions for end-of-life construction waste.” By capturing more waste at the installation phase and developing a viable recycling route, it is more likely in the future we will be able to develop more solutions for end-of-life construction waste. Moving towards ‘circular construction principles’ still presents many challenges, such as the collection of materials on a busy site with lots of different contractors, transportation, a lack of sorting infrastructure and limited end markets. But as a successful and growing scheme, Recofloor shows it can be done, with a focus on installation offcuts versus end-of-life/uplifted material. The latter is still a challenge that needs to be addressed in the future. • A longer version of this article is available to read at The Stocklists online: www.thestocklists.com/recofloor-03-2022 T 0161 355 7618

FLOORINGBUSINESSNEWS 40% jump in sales for Flooring Superstore
Orders up 17% at ScS
Fast growing national chain Flooring Superstore reported a 40% uplift in sales in 2021 as it doubled its store portfolio.
Order intake at ScS, one of the UK’s biggest flooring and furniture retailers, is up 16.6% for the last six months – and the order book is double the size it was in January 2020.
The latest accounts filed for the 12 months ending July 31, 2021, show revenue up 40.1% to £49.7m for North-east-based Connection Retail - the parent company of Flooring Superstore and its sister brand Direct Wood Flooring. Profits were down 4% overall but when the costs of opening new stores are stripped out, the earnings on sales were nearly 17% up. The company has plans to open 20 new stores in 2022 to increase its outlets to 60, following the most successful year in its history. The business started as an e-commerce operation in 2012 but opened its first bricks and mortar store in 2017. It has said, pre-Covid, that it has ambitions to open 100 stores UK-wide.
Belgium carpet imports halved in December Carpet imports from the UK’s largest trading importer, Belgium, fell by half in December as European manufacturers ended the year on a challenging note. Overall imports of carpet declined 22 percent to £54.4 million year-onyear in December according to figures out Friday from HM Revenue & Customs, compiled by The Furnishing Report. That followed annual declines between 2.5%–20% percent in the three autumn months immediately prior. There were declines from all the major source nations in December including the Netherlands and the Eastern importers in China and Turkey, but Belgium led the pack in the slowdown with imports halved to £8.7 million compared with the same month a year ago. But compared to 2020 as a whole, the 2021 picture represented an improvement with imports up 23% compared to the first year of the pandemic.
In a trading update to shareholders in advance of its Interim Results announcement next month, ScS said the group had traded well through the important winter sale period. “One year like-for-like order intake growth is 16.6%. Two year like-for-like order intake is in line with that achieved in the pre-pandemic 26 week period to 25 January 2020,” the company said.
“The Group’s order book has grown significantly against previous comparative periods, driven by the ongoing demand and supply chain challenges which have extended product lead times. “As at 29 January 2022, the Group’s order book is double the size it was at 25 January 2020, at £148.0m. The Group is working closely with suppliers to mitigate the risk of continued supply chain disruption in the second half of the financial year,” said the statement. Online orders have performed strongly during the pandemic with online order growth of 55.8% compared to the equivalent 26 week period to 25 January 2020.
Headlam ahead with strong start in 2022 Europe’s top flooring distributor Headlam plc has reported a strong performance for 2021 with UK sales up 15.5% and with a positive start to 2022. In a trading update to shareholders, Headlam reported 2021 revenue of £667.2 million (2020: £578.1 million) with underlying profit before tax expected to be slightly ahead of market expectations.
Consumer confidence slump vs housing boom
Both the UK and Continental Europe performed well, up 16.5% and 15.1% respectively against 2020 on a like-for-like revenue basis.
Households’ confidence in their financial outlook has slumped to its lowest level in more than eight years, according to polling firm YouGov and consultancy Centre for Business and Economic Research.
The company has a robust cash position. It said: “Actions taken under the business change programme helped to improve operating efficiency and operating margin during the year, with strong cash generation. Closing net funds was in excess of £53 million.”
Households’ expectations for their financial situation in 12-months’ time fell 4.5 points in January to 79.1, the lowest since October 2013. The wider measure of consumer confidence also fell, to 109.0 from 110.0, the weakest since March 2021.
Commenting on first trading weeks of the new year, Headlam said: “Early trading in 2022 has been encouraging, and the Company has continued to be able to largely mitigate the persisting industry wide supply issues and associated inflationary pressures.”
House prices continue to grow, however, helped in part by a shift in property requirements caused by the pandemic and government support for the sector. The YouGov-Cebr house value index for the past 30 days rose 1.8 points to 129.1, the highest since September 2014.
The company’s final results for the year ended 31 December 2022 will be announced on 9 March 2022.
Darren Yaxley, head of reputation research at YouGov, said: “While consumers’ outlook for their household finances has not been as bleak since the autumn of 2013, homeowners’ view of property market has not been this strong since September 2014.”

FLOORING INNOVATION AWARDS
Get set to star!
AND NEW FOR ’22...
Retailer stars are born!
The flooring industry is flying high in 2022 and the Flooring Innovation Awards are back to build momentum for the best products and services in the business. “Despite all the challenges of the past two years - or maybe because of them – the flooring industry is in overdrive with new ideas and product launches to stay ahead in a highly competitive industry,” said Flooring Innovation Awards organiser Bridgette Kelly. “We think 2022 is going to be one of the best years ever to recognise the inspiration and innovation that are driving this industry forward.”
The National Flooring Innovation Awards sets out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional in the sector. Award categories cover not only flooring products, but also recognise achievements in service, technology and marketing. Last year there were more than 100 submissions to the award scheme despite the challenges of Covid-19 and 34 shortlisted entries received the coveted Innovation Star. The judges then went on to select the Innovation Gold in each of 10 categories to receive the ultimate award. The awards scheme website is at www.flooringinnovationawards.com and gives full details of all the categories for 2022 and has an entry form for companies to make their first submissions to the judges.
Reach for the National Retail Star Awards! Following the huge success of the Flooring Innovation Awards, we’re launching an exciting new category for 2022, in association with The Flooring Show, to recognise exceptional retailers. We’re asking readers and also sales reps from the leading flooring companies to nominate innovative retailers – or you can nominate yourself and tell us why you should be a retail star! The judges will be looking for: • Innovation in sales techniques and technology • Inspiration in shop window display and presentation • Aspiration in new developments and/or staff initiatives The judges will pick eight winners from five English regions plus Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Innovation Awards organiser Bridgette Kelly, commented:

FLOORING FOCUS
The ones to swatch Like so many other aspects of business, the pandemic has accelerated a number of developing trends in the flooring industry around the marketing of product ranges to consumers. Many retailers took the opportunity of lockdowns to rationalise their store environment, analysing the return on investment that point-of-sale displays were generating and decluttering their floor space. The result is that in many cases only the best survive – and on pages 58 to 66 in this magazine this month we look at some of the latest initiatives in point of sale from the leading suppliers.
flooring – they want to feel products, photograph products, share mood boards and have their chosen brands help them buy with confidence,” she says. “The bar has been raised in consumer expectations of sampling. I joined Colour Marketing Services from a fabric and wallpaper sampling and fulfilment background and my knowledge and experience are in ensuring that the sample products that land on the consumer’s door mat are brand consistent, aspirational and absolutely instagrammable,” says Caroline. From its base in Ipswich, CMS bring skills, knowledge and market research learned over many decades to help the flooring world raise the level of their at-home consumer samples and in store take away samples to be in line with the wider interiors industry whether this is cuttings, cards or fulfilment, maximising return from investment. Tristan Smalley of specialist flooring merchandiser INNOV8 agreed with the direction of these trends. “The last 2 years have brought new challenges and for many of our customers they took the opportunity to invest in new sampling, new branding and different ways to get their products out into the market.
“The sample products that land on the consumer’s door mat need to be brand consistent, aspirational and absolutely instagrammable.” And the bar has also been raised in terms of the standards in merchandising and sampling to ensure the right products are in front of the right customers every time – both in store and at home. The trend towards home selection was particularly pronounced during the pandemic as consumers were locked down and/or unable to visit stores. Video appointments with retailers became a huge success and online selection through increasingly sophisticated websites and virtualisation platforms became so important. But flooring purchases are too subjective (and expensive) to be left to point-and-click and the value of a sampling service that is both fast and “fashionable” has become key to success in this sector – fashionable meaning that consumers expectations of the style and presentation of samples to their door is now extremely high as mainstream consumer brands have concentrated on sophisticated packaging and delivery services. Caroline Adams, Sales & Marketing director Colour Marketing Services has seen all this first hand. “It has been endlessly said (and frequently by me, to be fair) that the face of retail has changed over the last 5 years and the pandemic has only exaggerated that shift – the shift away from physical shopping and into the digital world. “The modern consumer wants to spend money decorating their home and wants to order samples from the comfort of their sofa – whether these are samples of paints, wallpapers, fabrics or 52
“At a time when so much moved online, be it working or shopping, we have seen a huge increase in the need for internet and postal samples, both huge bulk orders sent to our customers but also those managed and distributed by us on behalf of customers, direct to enduser, showing the huge numbers going out.” he said. INNOV8 has also seen an increase in smarter sampling in the form of double-sided boards, particularly when it comes to wood, laminate and LVT. “This is an ideal way of getting more products into a display, without having to double up on both costs and space which in customers showrooms is always at a premium. For example, customers are able to put 16 SKUs on show in an existing 8 space tooth rack display.

“Our team of merchandisers have been a huge support to our customers in helping to keep their names at the forefront of their minds,” says Tristan. Where potentially flooring suppliers have scaled-down on the road staff or Covid has affected people being able to consistently get into stores, Northamptoshire-based INNOV8 has bridged that gap by helping to either place stands or new sample collections in the market for them or keep on top of existing displays. “We are always here to provide a quality product and service,” says Tristan. ADP Distribution has become a major player in this sector. “When it comes to merchandising, ADP Distribution understands that the layout of your product and display is one of the most difficult tasks to master due to the wide range of solutions that can be provided,“ says Steve Birch of the West Midlands based business. “With our expert merchandising services, we want to maximise the impact of your brand and products in-store. FLOORINGNEWS 1.5m carpet adverts go live The Carpet Foundation is set to launch an online advertising campaign which will see one and a half million advertisements appear over a ten-week period. The £20,000 campaign kicks off at the beginning of March and will run for three weeks and will then return in May and the Autumn.
“ One and a half million advertisements promoting our retailers as the people to buy from is quite a significant campaign.”
The objective is to promote Carpet Foundation independent retailers as the people to buy carpet from. Four leading home interest magazine websites will be used - homesandgardens.com; livingetc.com; idealhome.com and realhomes.com. There are four different advertisements, which utilise vibrant and eyecatching imagery and simple yet strong messages. The call to action is to ‘buy from one of our experts’ and directs consumers to the Carpet Foundation website. The campaign is highly targeted and the advertisements will run on all the news pages of the four sites. In addition, the ads will be placed around keywords like flooring, carpet and design ideas to provide further focus. Using all standard digital formats, the campaign is bolstered by 500,000 ‘Big-Top’ ads which will give the campaign added impetus. Commenting on this move, Chief Executive Andrew Stanbridge said:
“This has to be worth a toe in the water as digital is the way forward. You get a big bang for your buck. One and a half million advertisements promoting our retailers as the people to buy from is quite a significant campaign. The great thing about digital is that it is all in real time so we will know how things are going very quickly.“

FLOORINGNEWS 50 years of cork innovation Cork innovator Granorte is celebrating 50 years since its foundation by the Rocha family. In 1955, Francisco Rocha started a cork stopper production company and by the 1970s the business grew into one of Portugal’s major cork stopper producers with five factories. However, this drew the family’s attention to the growing amount of cork waste from production and one of Francisco’s sons, Jose decided that something must be done to create value from it. So, in 1972 Granorte was established with the aim of finding ways to recycle and repurpose waste cork from wine stoppers into new products. Since the beginning, the company has focused on research and development and in the last 50 years the family-run business has established itself as one of the most innovative cork companies in the world. Counting award-winning furniture, floors, walls and insulation among its product portfolio, Granorte exports 90% of its products to more than 50 countries. Processing 6,600 tonnes per year of cork waste – impressive quantities given the material’s light weight nature – at three production sites totalling 48,000m2 and with a turnover in excess of €22m, the company is a leading recycler of cork, finding new life for this natural, renewable and sustainably managed raw material. Today, Granorte’s range is focused on flooring with a wide range of constructions designed for residential and commercial use. From monomaterial cork tiles to hybrid products that combine the acoustic, thermal and comfort benefits of cork with innovations such as click-fitting; the collection is one of the biggest currently available and includes many first to market products.
Paulo Rocha, Granorte says: “We’re hugely proud of our history and our 50th anniversary is testament to the extraordinary efforts of all our colleagues over the last five decades.” “Since our foundation, we’ve invested heavily in technology, focused on innovation and new ways of harnessing cork’s properties, and have worked with leading producers that share our philosophy to enhance the performance of our products,” he said. “The result is a collection of floors, walls, furniture, sanitary ware and other decorative objects that honour cork as a natural material with a unique aesthetic. “Cork has come a long way since our foundation in 1972 and we are confident that the next 50 years will also hold developments that lead to new applications for the material. With cork’s relevance in a market where the sustainability of products is of growing importance, we are excited about the future and introducing the benefits of this wonder of nature to new generations.”

FLOORING FACTSHEET
ADHESIVES SELECTION CHECKLIST
The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time:
Subfloor:
The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked.
What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard.
Odour:
While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces.
Low odour, solvent-free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.
Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.
The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation.
Special Performance: Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.
Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments.
Strength:
Air Quality and the Environment:
Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured.
The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.
Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but this criteria must be checked where appropriate.
ADHESIVE TYPES Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticised PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors. Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels. Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive. Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. THE STOCKLISTS March 2022
Flooring factsheet Vinyl Flooring Vinyl is a fast growing sector of the flooring market due to its durability at relatively low cost and huge range of designs available. Sheet vinyl and cushion floor by the roll are popular but the sector is dominated by LVT. In reality, most of the products sold today are “LVP”, Luxury Vinyl Planks, as wood decors are more popular than ceramics and stone but the term LVT is still used to cover the whole non-sheet market.
Benefits
• Huge choice in terms of decors across wood, ceramic, stone and geometric designs
• I mpressive realism – not just in the design but infinishing
techniques that allow for wood knots you can feel, tiles you can grout, etc. See appearance options.
• Excellent performance in durability for high traffic areas, scratch resistance and cleanability. Vinyl also tends to be much more nonslip than natural materials. Some products are water resistant for bathrooms and kitchens.
www.bramptonchase.co.uk
Product options
• Dry back – a sheet or tile that needs to be fixed to the sub-floor using an adhesive.
• Self-adhesive – tiles with a peel-off backing paper to stick to the
sub-floor. Some tiles have adhesive overlaps to stick to each other rather than the sub-floor.
• Loose lay vinyl – tiles that simply drop onto the floor and rely on
www.invictus.co.uk
a high friction backing to keep them in place – they demand a very sound, level sub-floor but are the easiset type of tile to lay or replace.
Click – tiles that have a mechanical jointing system to attach to • Warm and soft to touch compared to ceramic and stone floors - and • one another (like a locked tongue and groove system) and ‘float’ on a good heat insulator anyhow, and suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.
• Sound reduction – vinyl has neglible impact sound compared
to the tap/click of laminate and transmits less sound and vibration compared to solid floor.
• Considerably cheaper than the ‘real’ thing – both to buy and to fit – and tile/plank approach minimises wastage.
Installation
Installation preparation Vinyl requires a dry, sound, level subfloor as the relative thinness of vinyl and its light reflection performance will quickly reveal imperfections after installation as well as cause potential wear issues. Exisitng wooden/MDF floors may need a plywood underlay up to 6mm thick and then the joints will need to be skimmed or taped. Non-wood sub-floors will need a self-levelling screed to be laid to ensure a suitable base for the floor. A damp-proof membrane may be required depending on sub-floor moisture levels. However, new rigid core products are less flexible and can be laid more easily over existing floors – see Construction.
Top Coating Wear Layer Decor Layer
the sub-floor without being glued down. There are many proprietary versions of the click system which offer fast, clean installation and stability.
www.karndean.com
Appearance options Vinyl tiles and planks cover a hugh variety of sizes and shapes and can be mix-and-matched to achieve an infinite number of designs. Current fashions include extra wide and long planks for wood through to very small planks for wood. Border effects can be easy to achieve in LVT. Other notable options include:
• Embossed – this is where the top clear layer of the tile has been
www.krausflooring.co.uk
embossed to create a realistic texture that matches the style of the stone of wood decor. Registered embossed is the most authentic – the texture matches the design so that, for example, a wood knot or hand-scraped element in the wood design can be felt on the surface of the flooring.
• Grouting and grooving – vinyl tiles can be laid with grouting inlay strips or beads of vinyl for addewd realism – and there are acrylic grouts that can be applied. In wood decors, planks are available with v-grooves or bevelled edges between planks for added realism.
www.myvictoria.co.uk
LVT construction
Top coating – A polyurethane or aluminium oxide coating provides protection against scratches and stains and gives enhances anti-slip. Wear layer – This is a key layer - determining the performance and resilience of the product. A 0.3mm (12 mil) wear layer is a good for heavy wear areas. Commercial installations need 0.5mm wear layers or above with 0.7mm at the top end. The wear warranties and guarantees carried by products will be based on this thickness. Decor layer – This is the decor itself - in essence it is a paper- or filmbased photographic inkjet print. (A few LVT floors have the image printed directly to the surface of the floor but this implies less image definition and different wear characteristics.)
PVC Middle Layer(s) Fibre Glass Layer(s) PVC Base Layer
THE STOCKLISTS March 2022
PVC and fibre glass layers – The construction ‘sandwich’ can vary between products but a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers for strength and flexibility and fibre glass layers for structural stability may be used. Any click-system profile will be incorporated into these layers. Products often use a combination of recycled vinyl which is cheaper and virgin PVC which lasts longer and is more stable. Rigid core LVT has a solid, less flexible PVC layer with maximum stability which means it can be laid over exisiting, less even flooring without showing imperfections and therefore avoiding wear problems. Base (or backing) layer – The final high density PVC layer varies according to the installation requirement and is designed for taking adhesive or as an ‘underlay’ for loose-lay and click installations. 75
Stocklists: Flooring Fact Sheet from Interfloor
Flooring factsheet Eco-friendly underlay Sustainable underlay
Interfloor ‘Says NO to Waste’
renu® is a game changer. Interfloor’s new underlay meets the concerns of our modern world in reducing waste and being environmentally sustainable.
renu® is a sustainable, recycled carpet underlay and is without question the most sustainable underlay in Interfloor’s long history.
It’s made by bringing together raw materials that we save from going to landfill with some that have a positive effect on the environment.
We have used post-consumer waste, car tyres and plastic bottles in the manufacture of our underlay for many years. But with renu® we have gone even further responding to the aspiration for a fully sustainable product. It’s made from 98% recycled materials, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, which means keeping waste from going to landfill and is 100% recyclable itself! The main body of the underlay is made of foam reclaimed from recycled soft furnishings, this foam is them mixed with a binding agent and subjected to high temperature steam under high pressure. The backing is made from 100% recycled and unbleached paper and we use vegetable-based inks for printing. The facing film is made from an ethically produced, carbonnegative bio-based film made from sugar cane. The sugar cane actively captures CO2 from the atmosphere whilst at the same time releasing oxygen – making this material not just green, but proactively green. Let’s not forget, the point of underlay is that it feels great and prolongs the life of a new carpet and renu®, being made from highdensity foam and with a thickness of 9mm, is suitable for all areas of the home.
The in-store sales support available to renu® stockists

renu® stockists will be included in the online stockist locator on the Interfloor website.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
PU (polyurethane) foam • This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Poor or old underlay will...
• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Crumb
Sponge rubber • A more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
PU foam
www.unifloor.nl
Laminate underlay • There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination • A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.
www.underlay.com
Underfloor heating underlay • Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk
Pre-tackified underlay • A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired. Underlayment for LVT • This provides a smooth surface on which you can glue down immediately. If there is a time or acoustic issue or a problematic underfloor, a stable, smooth dual underlay system will provide the best solution.
THE STOCKLISTS March 2022
CLASSIC
Crumb rubber • Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).
Felt • This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets.
