Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

THE STOCKLISTS May 2015

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 5

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 10

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS May 2015

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 17

VISIT US AT THE FLOORING SHOW! “We are again looking forward to the Buying Groups National Flooring Show in Solihull. With less than two weeks to go, we are looking forward to showing the visitors what’s new at Edel Telenzo. As one of the original exhibitors we are keen on supporting the Flooring Show and have high hopes for the coming edition,” says Phil Hartley, MD at Edel Telenzo. The Flooring Show will be the first show where the latest addition to the Edel Telenzo collection will be on display: Diversity. Diversity is new and different. It is a beautiful carpet made of 100% 3-ply wool in eight, two-tone tweed, colour combinations. The special construction gives it a woven look-and-feel. It is non-directional and typically Edel Telenzo in its styling. It will be on the floor so cannot be missed!

Diversity Ground Cumin

Another innovation, this time in POS-materials, is the new display. Available in two versions and showing six qualities, the display looks sharp with beautiful lifestyle images and important messaging on warranties and guarantees. There is a special offer for orders placed during the show and limited availability so do not miss this opportunity!

ISO 9001 CERTIFICATION Edel Telenzo Carpets Ltd are proud to announce that their quality management system has been certified to ISO 9001. ISO quality management systems show that Edel Telenzo control its processes, evaluate and also optimize on a continuous basis. Adding to that, customer satisfaction is a high priority. From Edel’s quality manifest high priority is given to customer satisfaction via the quality management system as well as through customer satisfaction surveys. Having officially received the ISO 9001-certification you may assume Edel Telenzo to fulfil all criteria of the standard, as tested by the accredited certification body Bureau Veritas.

Carpet&FlooringReview Calmer care for patients

Nearly a year after Altro safety flooring was installed in a pioneering new dementia ward at Warrington Hospital, statistics have revealed that the products are helping to vastly improve life for patients and staff.

This is effectively setting the standard for flooring in clinical environments where creating a relaxed, calming and safe environment is paramount. The £1m Forget Me Not ward opened at Warrington Hospital in May 2014, with the aim of leading the way in providing the best quality care for hospital patients with dementia. The ward features a number of innovative design features, including its own mock bus stop, lounge area with traditional-look fireplace, quiet room with a 1960s-style TV, and a special dementia garden area. Everything is designed to provide relaxation and stimulation for patients who need hospital care, and who also have dementia. Lee Bushell, Warrington Hospital’s Estates Officer, Capital Projects, said: “The results we have seen so far are astounding and show that we have got it right. There are fewer patient attacks on staff, fewer slips, trips and falls, and patients with a history of violence are quickly calm and relaxed after arriving at the unit. “The length of stay on the ward has vastly reduced — which for a unit with only 21 beds is a major consideration — and there is less sickness and absence among staff because they are happier in their working environment. There are no issues with cleaning at all, and the flooring still looks good and is performing very well.” Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was one of the largest beneficiaries from the £50 million national King’s Fund, which helps shape health policy and practice.

Legend is not myth

With a range of sophisticated hues including deep crimson, charcoal and a suite of contemporary greys, the great value of Urban Legend will prove no myth for retailers across the country.

Flooring plays an important role in dementia-friendly design, because dementia patients need to feel confident moving around the space. Using matt flooring is essential, as reflective surfaces can cause confusion, and speckling or sparkles need to be avoided. Flooring must be safe underfoot, as well, and with a tone and texture that is warm and comforting. T 01462 489516 www.altro.co.uk

Made from 100% StainSafe polypropylene in a soft and resilient two-ply yarn, this cutpile carpet’s modern looks will bring sophistication to any setting, with its bleach cleanable nature offering impressive performance. In four and fivemetre width options that help to minimise seams and waste Urban Legend brings good looks throughout the home, delivering excellent value carpet to cost-conscious homeowners. “With a streamlined palette of nine on-trend shades, Urban Legend delivers the latest fashionable interior looks in a carpet that’s quite extraordinary value,” explains Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta. “This range is perfect for homeowners looking for that blend of great value and stylish looks, dispelling the myth that you can’t have both and still enjoy a carpet that performs.” Backed by seven-year wear and 10-year stain warranties, Urban Legend’s reassuring quality is typically Balta, providing retailers with great performing carpet and excellent service levels from one of Europe’s biggest flooring brands. Rhondda re-furb

A range of Polyflor’s high performance vinyl flooring was recently installed at Rhondda Housing Association’s brand new Llys Graig Y Wion social housing development in Pontypridd, Wales.

Formerly a primary school, the stone built Victorian property has been converted by Rhondda Housing Association into much needed affordable yet high quality accommodation for the area. Polyflor’s Acoustix Forest fx, Colonia and Polysafe Verona flooring was installed by Artisan Flooring of Swansea in approximately 29 apartments within Llys Graig Y Wion’s three main blocks and three bungalows. 520m² of Acoustix Forest fx PUR sheet vinyl flooring in European Oak 3345 was installed in communal areas at Llys Graig Y Wion including stairwells, hallways and landings. Featuring a realistic wood design, this hardwearing commercial grade acoustic flooring provides an impact sound reduction level of 19dB for high traffic areas thanks to its closed cell foam backing. 1600m² of Polyflor’s Colonia PUR luxury vinyl tile in English Oak 4435 was fitted throughout living spaces. Designed specifically for use in the home, the Colonia range features 10 wood and 8 stone effect designs with authentic surface embossing for added realism. Polysafe Verona PUR decorative, carborundum-free safety flooring was also installed in apartment bathrooms to provide sustainable slip resistance in these often wet areas. The Café Noir 5204 shade chosen for this project features virtually invisible safety particles and tonal decorative chips to give the look of smooth vinyl with the performance of a safety floor. More support ethical rugs

GoodWeave has moved closer to eradicating child labour in the rug industry with the addition of three more UK companies to its international labelling scheme. Rug Couture, Sage Green Designs and The Moorland Rug Company have all become GoodWeave licensees, making 17 in the UK. As licensees, they are committed to sourcing rugs or woven products from only GoodWeave certified producers in India, Nepal or Afghanistan. The prevalence of child labour in the rug industry is widely documented by international bodies, including the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and United Nations. Whilst the numbers of children estimated to be working in South Asia’s rug looms has declined, it is reckoned that there are still over 250,000. The UK is a major importer of rugs made in India and Nepal. Nina Smith, Executive Director of GoodWeave is hopeful that more UK rug companies will sign up to the GoodWeave label: “I am heartened by three more companies in the UK taking a stand against child labour and doing their best to ensure their rugs are child-labour-free. The more ethically made rugs demanded via the GoodWeave scheme, the more pressure will come to bear on producers to abandon child labour for good”. The Moorland Rug Company, Rug Couture and Sage Green Designs are the latest three companies to sign up to the GoodWeave labelling scheme in the UK. Other rug suppliers already ensuring their rugs are child-labour-free and signed up to the labelling scheme include The Rug Company, Matthew Wailes, Bazaar Velvet and Deirdre Dyson. In addition, WovenGround, the retailer, has become a GoodWeave Industry Supporter. T 0844 2437838 www.GoodWeave.org.uk

Getting a good reception

Polyflor’s Expona high design luxury vinyl tiles were installed to create an eye-catching floor for the reception of a new Cala Homes division in Welwyn Garden City recently.

Luxury vinyl tiles from the Expona Design collection were specified by main contractors Gifford Grant and expertly installed by flooring contractors Merit Flooring to complete Cala Homes’ stylish reception at their new office in the Falcon Gate development. This subtle linear Dark Contour 7215 design was chosen as it fitted with the contemporary and sophisticated brand image of the upmarket homebuilders. Expona Design has a 3mm gauge and 0.7mm wear layer making it suitable for very heavy commercial applications, such as areas like an office reception where there is likely to be high levels of foot traffic. Another robust commercial luxury vinyl tile product from Polyflor, Expona Commercial in Light Grey Matrix 5074, was selected for use in the staff kitchen and dining area. The cross linked and UV cured PUR polyurethane reinforcement used in Expona flooring guarantees a simple cleaning and maintenance regime. Nicola Forgette from Gifford Grant commented, “Polyflor Expona ranges were specified for this job at CALA Homes because of the vast range of attractive design options available to us. The Expona Design and Expona Commercial collections give a stunning, hard wearing finish which will look good for years to come. “ T 0161 767 1111

Smart and safe at Sutton

A combination of Polyflor’s Polysafe Verona PUR vinyl safety flooring in two complementary and stylish shades has been used to help create an eye-catching dining hall for pupils at The Sutton Academy in St Helens.

As part of a major refurbishment project at the school, over 400m2 of Polysafe Verona PUR flooring was installed throughout the dining and seating areas where pupils relax and have fun during break times. Verona flooring in Biscotti 5212 and Dolphin Grey 5203 shades was used to create a neutral backdrop for the dining hall’s vibrant purple and green benches which tie in with the Academy’s branding colours. With virtually invisible carborundum-free safety aggregates and tonal decorative chips, Polysafe Verona has the look of smooth vinyl flooring combined with the performance of a safety floor. Fitted by education sector refurbishment specialists Constellations of Nottingham, these two Verona colours were used as part of a floor design with borders cut in on-site to create separate walkway and seating areas. Jon Lord from Constellations commented, “Combined with the bright furniture, the flooring presents a stylish backdrop which certainly adds more of a wow factor to the space. Importantly for us, Verona provided a trouble-free installation.” Ian Morris, Director of Network & Information Services at The Sutton Academy comments, “This refurbishment has totally reinvented the dining hall and the use of Verona ensures a much needed improvement.” Featuring Polyflor’s renowned PUR cross-linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement, Polysafe Verona flooring can be easily maintained with a simple cleaning regime. Pushing a high pedal profile

Quick-Step has announced the renewal of its long-standing sponsorship deal with the Etixx–Quick-Step Pro Cycling Team. The contract, which was set to expire at the end of the current season, will be extended for another two years, until the end of the 2017 season.

ALWAYS AHEAD OF THE PACK

FROM THE CLASSICS TO CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

Paul De Cock, President at Unilin, division flooring, explains the chemistry between Quick-Step and the world of cycling: “Over the past sixteen seasons, our international sponsoring strategy has been pivotal in enhancing the reputation of our brand. I don’t think that we could have ever found a better match than this one.

Quick-Step’s love of cycling started in 1999 when the flooring division of the Unilin Group entered the peloton as co-sponsor of the Mapei–Quick-Step Cycling Team. Four seasons later, in 2003, Quick-Step stepped up this commitment when it became one of the main sponsors of cycling team of Patrick Lefevere. The 12 seasons since then have been a success on all fronts - forging one of the strongest teams in professional cycling history, Quick-Step gradually raised worldwide awareness about its brand.

“The resolve of Niki Terpstra, the sheer power of Tom Boonen, the elegance of Michal Kwiatkowski … I think the perfect rider has a lot in common with a Quick-Step floor: a fine blend of robustness and style. What’s more, we share with the team a common passion for design and innovation as well as an eye for the smallest details,” said Paul.

Celebration of vinyl recycling records

Recofloor members’ achievements in recycling a record 500-plus tonnes of waste vinyl flooring in 2014 were celebrated at the fourth Annual Awards event, held at Leicester Tigers Rugby Club in March.

More than 70 flooring industry delegates attended to receive their trophies and certificates from guest host, England rugby legend and former British Lions captain Bill Beaumont. Directors Bob Smith of Polyflor and John Patsavellas of Altro emphasised the importance of Recofloor to the sector’s sustainability efforts, saying: “Every contractor, fitter or distributor who raises a collection contributes to the overall amount of flooring we can recycle. It’s very important to close the loop.” Echoing these sentiments, CFA Council Member Hamish Macgregor, Managing Director of Hamilton-based Macgregor Flooring Company Ltd urged flooring contractors to ‘overcome their reluctance and try harder’, saying: “Although general awareness of sustainability issues is greater, there’s still a long way to go. I accept it’s harder for smaller firms to implement green initiatives, but Recofloor can save up to 70% on disposal costs versus landfill and it benefits the environment.” MacGregor Flooring Company Ltd won Construction Project of the Year Award for collecting more than 14 tonnes of waste vinyl over eight months from the new £90 million West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven. To date, more than 2,250 tonnes of vinyl flooring waste has been diverted from landfill through Recofloor and recycled back into new flooring or traffic management products such as cones and sign bases. Benefits for 650-plus collectors across the UK include a sustainable option for end-oflife flooring, enhanced green credentials and up to 75% savings in disposal costs. Recofloor’s Project Manager Jane Gardner praised the ‘collaboration of the entire flooring supply chain’ in continuing to grow the scheme, which will have an added focus on fitter training schools to grow recycling awareness further. AA Flooring Ltd received Best Newcomer for its speedy sustainable impact at its Bleadon, Somerset premises. Greatest Improver went to Birch Distribution, Hull, also a Gold Award winner, for its impressive four-fold increase in tonnage collected compared to the previous year. Benjamin Neale of Gold Award winner Reform Flooring Ltd, Norwich, was named Recofloor Champion for his dedication and promotion of the scheme to others. Contractor of the Year went to Mayfield Floors, Stockport for demonstrating unwavering commitment to the scheme by collecting material to Recofloor specifications, thereby contributing to the scheme’s on-going success. Recofloor’s 71 distributors play a key role in the scheme’s success by extending their services to allow fitters to drop off smaller volumes of waste vinyl flooring at their sites. Birch Distribution, Hull was named Distributor of the Year for its enthusiastic support, collecting 33 tonnes in 2014, and unstinting efforts in promoting the scheme to its customers. Carpets ‘N’ Carpets Ltd, Treorchy, scooped the Outstanding Achievement award.. Gold Award winners included: 3D Flooring Supplies (Cardiff); B&K Systems (Leeds); Birch Distribution, Hull; Bramhall Flooring Co, Hyde; Branagan Flooring Services (Manchester); Carpet & Flooring (Manchester); Carpets ‘N’ Carpets, Treorchy; The Hull Flooring Company; Kent Flooring Supplies (Kent); Lee Floorstok (Manchester); MCD Wales (Bridgend); MacGregor Flooring Company, Hamilton; Mayfield Floors, Stockport; N&S Flooring (Bristol); Nutland Carpet Accessories (Chandlers Ford); Ross Hughes Flooring (Caernarfon) and Top Floors (East Anglia) Ltd (Ipswich). Bin wins vinyl final

University of Hertfordshire students shared a £1,000 top prize for their innovative ideas to create a modular compost bin and a roof tile from waste vinyl flooring in the first-ever Recofloor Design Competition.

The competition was organised by the UK’s national vinyl flooring recycling scheme, founded in 2009 by flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro, to increase market options for post-consumer vinyl flooring. Currently the main end-applications for uplifted flooring are traffic management products, such as cones, due to contamination levels of screed and scrim on the back of this material, whilst clean off-cuts are recycled back into new vinyl flooring. The product design undergraduates - Matthew Lodge, James Lyttle, Shivani Majithia, Stephen Rothwell, Sufyan Akram and Anchal Goel – received their cheque from England rugby legend and former British Lions captain Bill Beaumont who was guest host at the annual Recofloor Awards event in March. Two other team members, Cen Gulcen and Waye Shyang were unable to attend. Accompanying them at the Leicester Tigers Rugby Club event were University of Hertfordshire project coordinators, Dr George Haritos and Dr Iman Mansouri who will work with Recofloor’s founders, Polyflor and Altro, on further research and project development. Dr Haritos said: “Making products from waste vinyl flooring will increase the material’s life from around 30 years to more than 100 years, offering sustainable new outlets that preserve valuable resources. We’re currently investigating the feasibility of batch production of the compost bin to be sold on the open market.” For Altro’s Manufacturing and Technical Director John Patsavellas taking the recycling capability ‘beyond traffic cones’ was a key aim of the competition. He said: “We don’t use student talent enough in manufacturing and we are delighted that the two teams rose to the challenge with these excellent designs. As Recofloor continues to expand and divert even more waste vinyl flooring from landfill, exciting opportunities for reusing this material in new product applications can only grow too.” T 0161 355 7618 www.recofloor.org 42 May 2015

Readers’ Survey

How level is the playing field? Should suppliers be more discriminating in opening accounts Tensions in the flooring trade about suppliers distributing to man-and-van and internet retailers boiled over in our survey which received one of the biggest responses and most comments in recent years.

83% of respondents said manufacturers are too indiscriminate about who they did business with and 81% said the situation has been getting worse since the recession.

“Certain ranges you can almost get in a local take away,” said a London retailer. “Wholesalers in this area will open accounts with any fitter with a hammer or a Stanley knife,” said a Glasgow reader.

A Cambridge retailer commented: “There are 100's of small independent stores throughout the UK, that have been with these suppliers for many, many years – that’s a lot of money and it is about time they appreciated it, I do not mean discount, I mean support. I sometimes feel they do not care at all.”

“If they continue to supply the man with the van they will drive the bona fide retailer out of business and end up delivering to 20 outlets in a town rather than 3 retailers, increasing their costs,” said a store owner in the North West.

A massive 88% said they thought quality suppliers should only deal with established independent stores and wholesalers.

But a Norfolk reader told us: “Your survey stinks. It comes across like you have made your minds up about this point and are seeking reassurance from retailers. The results will be heavily weighted in the complainers favour. It is a level playing field out there. Business is to be won by whoever wants to win it the most.”

Our survey followed a crescendo of comments we have seen from our readers in our other surveys and when we challenged retailers to agree that it’s a free, open market, only 9% agreed.

“Great survey,” said a Hull retailer. “It’s true anyone and everyone can get an account these days, from working from Facebook to a lock up or out of a van! The problem here though is that small retailers like myself invest time and money into a our showrooms not only in expensive retail displays but also in our overheads. Carpet fitters are an increasing threat through Facebook! It’s greed!”

While 68% of respondents felt the industry has too many wholesalers, van/lock-up based traders and also the internet were seen as the greater threat (37% and 33% respectively versus 22% for wholesalers). Some retailers have taken action and 84% and said supplier behavior had put them off dealing with the worst offending companies. “Retailers need to stand together and drop suppliers who refuse to assist us. Price battles with local competition is all part of the trade, but competing with someone operating out of a garden shed insults my sensibilities,” said a store in Essex.

Some 84% of respondents said they had complained to their reps about the practice. A Cambridgeshire retailer said: “It’s usually down to the reps who set up the accounts. If you have a loyal rep he will protect you from local opposition provided it’s reciprocated.” But the pressure is on: “One of my reps has been reprimanded on several occasions for NOT opening new accounts but he's now crumbled to the corporate line. Just another slave to the iPad!” said a reader in East Yorkshire.

Colour Your Life with

CARPETS Colour Matching Service

Those of you old enough to remember will recall that ’s old logo featured the strapline “Colour Your Life”. This strapline was quietly removed as part of a “brand refresh”, however Darren Longden, ’s Commercial Director tells us, that this strapline is more true today than ever before. “Today’s consumers have a real understanding of interior design. Whether it be through the ever popular home design programmes or magazines or through using the internet, they are better able to create, or at least match to, the look they want”.

Your Life”

Customers looking for a standard beige, or even greys and taupes, can find plenty to choose from in most retailers. The problem comes if they want real colour, or something a little different. Whilst several carpet manufacturers offer ranges with a wider choice of colours, their colour palettes typically only include varying shades of the traditionally more popular colours of green, blue and red. As can be seen in their V&A Twist range, or their recently launched 104 colour palette in Ultimate Twist, offers more standard colour choice than anyone. But what if the right carpet colour for your customers’ scheme is not in any standard range. What if the customer needs a burnt orange, a lemon colour, or a deep turquoise? Right: Below:

Free of Charge Colour Matching Service. Beautifully presented pom to show your customer how their colour will look.

All Ultimate Collection qualities also feature stain protection and mothproofing, and are available any width to 7 metres.

’s colour This is where matching service comes into its own. Whether your customers wants a twist, velvet, saxony, or even a shagpile quality, can match to your customers ideal colour using their colour matching service, which is available on all their Ultimate Collection qualities.

’s Head of Gaelle Merlin, Design, comments “we are renowned for offering real colour choice, however even with such choice, our custom colour option is more popular than ever. Indeed, why restrict customers’ choices when you can give them the exact colour they want. With over 40 years of expertise, and Europe’s most state of the art dye house, along with us only using the finest New Zealand wool, we are perfectly equipped to match to any colour.”

Retailers and consumers alike are sometimes wary about using such services, but there is really no reason to be, as makes the whole process easy. Simply provide them with a sample of the colour your customer wants, in whatever form they have. It can be a paint chart, piece of wallpaper or fabric, or even an item of clothing, anything at all, and they will match to it. They will provide you, free of charge, with a yarn pom, which you can present to your customer to show them how their colour will look. It is beautifully presented in a box, which exudes quality, and really adds to the whole service that you offer your customer. This whole process usually takes no more than a week, and once you approve the colour, the carpet is delivered within 2-3 weeks.

Darren Longden’s Commercial Director expands. “The key to getting the colour just right is in the materials we use. Not all wools are the same, and the reason we only use the finest New Zealand wool is that it is significantly whiter and cleaner than any other wool, making it the perfect canvas for colour. That is why whichever colour is chosen, our match will brighter and more vibrant.” For more information on ’s colour matching service, visit www.ryalux.com or contact your local Sales Representative or Sales Office on 0161 762 3030.

Small saves waste

F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has introduced new, convenient smaller pack sizes for its Stopgap F77 and Stopgap F78 waterproof surface membranes. Designed to minimise product wastage and increase efficiency, the 3kg Stopgap F77 pack and 6kg Stopgap F78 pack are ideal for controlling subfloor moisture in smaller areas.

Stopgap F77 is the ultimate single-coat moisture protection system, a waterproof surface membrane that offers maximum protection against damp and excess moisture in subfloors. The single-coat system is effective up to relative humidity levels as high as 98% and is suitable for any flooring installation, including application over underfloor heating systems. Pigmented metallic black to aid coverage uniformity, the new epoxy resin product has a working time of 30 minutes and cures in approximately three hours, without the need for accelerants. Stopgap F77 is now available in 3kg, 7kg and 14kg containers. Stopgap F78 is the speedy moisture protection alternative, F. Ball's first water-based moisture management system. It offers a high performance, eco-conscious alternative to epoxy-resin systems and impedes the passage of residual construction moisture up to relative humidity levels of 95% in almost any flooring installation. Once applied, the first coat takes approximately 15-20 minutes to cure, and then a further 30 minutes for the second coat to cure, resulting in a barrier against moisture, achieved in less than two hours. Stopgap F78 is now available in 6kg, 12kg and 18kg containers, which can be resealed between jobs and stored for future use. Stopgap F78 is part of F. Ball's Fast Track Solutions system of products, which also includes the rapid set, rapid dry smoothing underlayment, Stopgap Fast-Track 30, and new fast-track vinyl floorcovering adhesive Styccobond F5. These products, combined, will allow flooring contractors to complete a vinyl floorcovering installation in as little as three hours. T 01538 361 633 46 May 2015

More than 90% of the floor space is already sold out at The Flooring Show, Harrogate, in an early sign of success for September’s national exhibition.

Event Director Wendy Adams comments: “We are so pleased to see our floorplan so full this early in the year. We’ve worked hard over the past few years to really bring back some big names to Harrogate and it’s fantastic we now have a great mix of familiar faces and exciting new names – I’m sure 2015 will be a great year for the show.” In addition to favourites including Cormar Carpets, Abingdon Flooring, F Ball & Co, Lano and Lifestyle Floors, the show welcomes a host of new and returning names this year including IVC Group, Asiatic Carpets & Rugs, Uzin, Whitestone Weavers and Hugh Mackay. The 2014 show introduced ‘The Wool Trends Centre’ in conjunction with the British Wool Marketing Board and the Campaign for Wool. This popular area will return in 2015 and includes manufacturers Brockway, Cavalier, Westex, Axminster, Brintons, Adams, Bronte and Ulster all exhibiting. As well as exhibitors, the show will continue to develop feature areas at the event. The ever popular Demo Areas run by NICF, FITA and CFA will return as will The Trends Hub. The Seminar programme will hosts a wide variety of speakers, from advice on social media and blogging to a keynote speech given by Vanessa Brady, OBE the founder of the Society of British & International Design. Flower on Flooring Splintering away from wood grain Despite the continuing dominance of wood grain designs in the vinyl flooring market, there is evidence of increasing popularity for alternative options.

Slate designs within the Cavalio collection of luxury vinyl tiles provide a relevant example. National sales manager Barry Donnelly says “old stone designs add strength and character to interiors,” and this is the reason the Cavalio collection of luxury vinyl tiles have been firm favourites for homes and commercial environments. "There are three unique slate designs within Cavalio’s Conceptline flooring range for domestic and light commercial interiors - brown toned Autumn Slate, the darker, more traditional Grey Slate and our eye-catching highlight Scottish Slate tile, which blends blue, grey and brown tones,” he continues. “It’s important that each slate design achieves the authentic and slightly irregular look of natural stone, so we include intricate graining, complementing base colours and tonal variations to add realism. Our slate designs look particularly impressive when combined with grouting strips in complementary or contrasting colours to really define the tiles, a popular look for bathrooms and kitchens," says Mr Donnelly. Polyflor market manager Tavia Spencer describes the increasing demand for concrete floor designs that inspired her company to launch its Expona Flow PUR range of sheet vinyl flooring: "The Expona Flow Concrete vinyl flooring Cavalio’s Autumn Slate

collection gives the effect of continuous poured concrete for a seamless finish. Subtle details such as tonal variations and a polished surface effect help add to the flooring’s authentic appearance. “We included Industrial Concrete designs in the collection to satisfy the trend for unfinished, industrial textures within modern interiors. These designs accurately recreate the look of weathered concrete featuring fine cracks and sandy surface decoration. “Adding a creative twist, the concrete collection also includes Ornamental Concretes with a decorative irregular stencilled motif, giving the appearance of an aged floor that's been worn down over the years,” Ms Spencer concludes. 48 May 2015

Avenue Floors product Avenue’s retro in red York manager Victoria Hemelaer says cushion vinyl is a wonderfully versatile material, but few brands are brave enough to venture beyond wood, stone and tile designs. “We like to take a different approach, appealing to a more style conscious audience and our Bubblegum & Liquorice collection demonstrates this perfectly with floors that are beautifully different. “For 2015 we’ve refreshed the majority of the collection in line with the latest interior trends involving some of the hottest looks around,” she continues. “From the sense of exotic wonderment in the Moroccan influence of Sagres to the retro diner styling of the bright red York (pictured), or the solid block acid green of Uni, the Bubblegum & Liquorice collection is all about bold exploration and being different. The results really make the collection stand out and prove just how powerful a design element cushion flooring can be,” Ms Hemelaer concludes. Karndean Designflooring commercial sales manager Matt Speck says LVT's popularity within commercial settings is due to quick installation, durability, easy care and “endless design capabilities.” “We have responded to calls from architects and designers for unprecedented slip resistance and have launched our new Opus Enhance range, achieving a result of 40 plus in the Pendulum Wet Test,” he says. Featuring intricate detail of eight of the most popular designs from Karndean’s commercial Opus range, from striking black washed wood effects to light grey stone look tiles. “This collection is positioned as our most commercially versatile, and also offers the A&D community inspiring designs for future projects whilst going above and beyond the Ornamental Modern from Polyflor necessary safety requirements,” says Mr Speck.

New Upofloor Zero contract sheet flooring offers a tough, resistant surface that is completely eco and user-friendly. Made from an innovation material called Enomer, the flooring contains ‘zero’ PVC, chlorine, plasticizers, phthalates, halogens and heavy metals, promoting healthy indoor air. It is ideal for public spaces with high safety requirements, including hospitals, healthcare facilities and schools. Upofloor Zero features a mineral-based construction and has an anti-static, ionomer-reinforced surface treatment. In high traffic environments, it offers excellent durability and flexibility, and it is exceptionally resistant to scratching, staining, bacteria and chemicals. A flexible, homogeneous structure makes installation easy and sheeting can be quickly molded into awkward areas, including floor drains and up onto walls. The Ionomer surface is also easy to maintain and requires no extra treatments; several studies reveal an associated lifecycle cost reduction of up to 80%, compared to other surface treatments. The Zero colour pallet includes 45 speckled shades - from light, pebble tones, through vibrant primaries, to deep inky shades. Its motto, 'We are LVT' emphasises the business has a very long and sound history in the area of design floor coverings of this type, says Earthwerks, with innovation key to everything the company aspires to. The latest collections unveiled at Domotex 2015 included non-wood finishes in both plank and tile, and with impressive effect. One key design has proved to be a ‘true’ black and ‘pure’ white LVT tile, described as unique in the market and winning enthusiastic customer reviews. European sales and marketing director Carine Czohara says: “It is clear that new trends in non-organic finishes such as metals, concretes, and stripe surface effects are coming fast both in tile and plank formats. Solid and embossed colours are also being introduced due to market requests. EarthWerks always try to lead in design, and our ColorWerks collection demonstrates our commitment to being bold.” Windmöller Flooring Products explains that its new wineo 600 collection is supplied as a glued product or as a Connect product for glueless installation to provide specialist retailers and architects with an even greater variety of formats and designs for all application areas. The new collection is distinguished by a 0.4 mm wear layer with the utility class 23/32, developed for both home and light commercial use.

Moduleo UK and Eire managing director David Bigland, says his company has seen a “huge surge” in sales of stone-effect products. "Our Ocean Slate in particular, has experienced a great deal of success recently – especially with those looking to update their kitchens. The dark intensity and rugged surface mimics natural slate to give consumers the authentic appearance of the real thing, but without the drawbacks." The Hounslow Poundland store has installed Tarkett Vylon Plus in its back of house staff area. The design is a homogeneous vinyl floorcovering which provides a versatile flooring solution. Poundland head of store development Mark Roberts says: “As a retailer with one of the highest footfalls per square metre on the High Street, we need a product that is hardwearing and performs well under pressure.''

Master brand for installers

With the Quick-Step Master Installer scheme, the Academy for Excellence in Flooring is giving installers the chance to benefit from the brand association that comes with one of the biggest names in flooring.

With appearances at the Ideal Home Show as well as extensive coverage in home interest publications, television and online, Quick-Step is one of the most visible brands in flooring and generates high levels of interest in its products. Through the Master Installer scheme, the Academy offers a chance for installers to be featured on the Quick-Step website that receives several thousand visitors every month, many of whom are keen to find out about installation services provided by the manufacturer. All Quick-Step Master Installers are featured on the www.quick-step.co.uk website, meaning they are often the first to receive enquiries on the installation of laminate, wood and vinyl floors available from the brand. With Master Installers reporting an uptake in work since becoming certified, the reasons for taking the three-day course are clear: “Once you’ve passed the rigorous three-day course, you are awarded a suite of benefits that are likely to see your work load increase, so be prepared to be busier than ever,” says Lee Thompson, procurement and technical manager. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Wood with virtuality

Seaside success for Stopgap

A high performance smoothing underlayment and waterproof surface membrane from F. Ball and Co. Ltd.have been used to create a luxury floor finish at the new 2500m2 Abbey Sands seafront apartment complex in Devon. Lang and Potter flooring contractors conducted moisture tests on the new subfloor, which showed high levels of relative humidity (RH). The concrete slab subfloor was also very uneven. After scabbling the substrate, contractors applied a base coat of Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment to thicknesses of between 7mm and 10mm to level the surface.

Kährs has launched a new, interactive website at www.kahrs.com. The new site combines a wealth of wood-floor related resources, along with a virtual showroom, where Kährs designs can be laid within decorated roomsets, to aid in selection and specification. With a simplified structure and easy navigation, Kährs website provides an inspiration hub for retailers, designers and specifiers, and homeowners. The new, combined Floorfinder/Virtual Showroom allows you to choose a floor and install it within a bespoke roomset, within minutes, and compare designs side-by-side. A new pattern-laying tool can also be used within the Showroom area, allowing you to ‘lay’ floors from Kährs new Bloc pattern range – In a variety of design combinations – and then calculate the required floor quantity. Generic and product-based content covers different wood species, environmental information and construction benefits. The site also presents Kährs history, takes a tour of the factory and includes comprehensive design, installation and maintenance advice, as well as inspirational images gathered from around the world. T 023 9245 3045 www.kahrs.com

Stopgap F78 one component, rapid drying waterproof surface membrane was then used to impede the passage of subfloor moisture. Stopgap F78 offers protection against residual construction moisture up to relative humidity levels of 95% in almost any flooring installation. The first coat applied at Abbey Sands took 30 minutes to dry and the second coat took a further 30 minutes, creating a barrier against moisture in less than two hours. A final, 6mm coat of Stopgap 1200 was then applied to complete the subfloor. Award winning Stopgap 1200 is a minimum preparation, maximum performance smoothing underlayment, specially designed for use directly over old adhesive residues. Stopgap 1200 Pro can be used directly over waterproof surface membranes without the need for priming, has a working time of 20 minutes, a walk-on time of just 60 minutes, and was ready to receive new floorcoverings at Abbey Sands after only four hours. Styccobond F3 flooring adhesive was used to adhere a range of carpets to the subfloor. T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Carpet&FlooringReview

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

As we are in the political frenzy, thoughts turn to why we would persuade voters to vote for wool - what should the Wool Manifesto say, what merits will bring the polls in our favour?

Voting for Wool... Politics is in the air, on the news, blaring out of our radios and posted through our letter box at every opportunity. If you pick up your landline occasionally - you may also find that the nuisance caller on the end of the line is wanting to conduct a political survey with you/your answers as valuable data. We are under siege.

Unsurprisingly, we hear a lot of what people think at this time and it makes you realise, that everything is just a matter of opinion. Including wool and how we promote the many benefits of our fabulous fibre.

Although we see sheep everywhere at this time of year - lambing season is in full swing and we are heading towards shearing at a rapid rate - wool is not a majority fibre in the world of textiles. Indeed, if it was a political party, it may, in a pie chart scenario, rather appropriately garner a similar market share as the Green Party does - a tiny slither - under 2% in the fibre world. But whereas for Green politics that is coldly regarded as negligible Wool’s slight slither of the fibre market is increasingly defined as ‘niche’.

Beautiful British Wool Carpet of the Month

The Boho Collection by Ulster Carpets offers vintage inspired designs with the stamp of quality. A hardwearing 80% wool/20% nylon mix, it has a heavy domestic wear grade but the natural luxuriousness of an Ulster woven axminster carpet. Boho is designed to be a lasting installation; the designs and colours are heirloom inspired. There are five designs in total, each with a quirky personality that is held nicely together with the muted, soft pastel colour palette. From the playful leaf pattern of ‘Rhapsody’ to the statement zig-zag of ‘Tribe and the classy houndstooth of ‘Chic’ - the difficulty will be in choosing the one you like best. Available in 4m, 3m, 2m and 1m and to coordinate with Ulster’s Heritage Twist Plains for a whole house floor solution.

In the case of the UK, we are talking over 30 million kilos of ‘niche’ British wool - growing on those sheep you see all over the countryside and sustaining businesses all over the world which can hardly be considered negligible. But as we are in the political frenzy, thoughts turn to how we could persuade voters to vote for wool - what should the Wool Manifesto say, what merits will bring the polls in our favour? At the top of the Wool Manifesto is our credible track record - Wool is natural, renewable, sustainable - no other carpet fibre can compare to the way wool replaces itself naturally year after year. It is grown on sheep, its not man-made. Environmentally friendly. Tick

How will wool perform if it wins the vote - with strength and resilience. Robust when the going gets tough - wool is a dynamic workhorse, it can take the pressure - a true performance fibre! Tick

Can it be a vote for the economy? Wool will last longer and look better for longer - a wool carpet is the investment that saves you money in the longer run. Think happy customers too. Tick But are you safe with wool? It won’t easily ignite, it is slip free, fall friendly, hypo-allergenic... Tick

This all sounds fantastic but at want of sounding shallow, our candidate must be visually appealing. Wool carpets have something for everyone - beautiful design, stunning colour, great texture. Tick Not a bad Manifesto. Put a cross in our box. Vote for wool...you won’t regret it!

from The Stocklists

and why we like it...

It is clear with Boho that Ulster have cleverly defined a ‘good taste’ haven for the modern design minded home owner in search of carpet. We particularly like the ‘Hemingway’, stunningly shown here on a stairway. The name itself lends a certain debonair style - we are thinking Trilby and Mackintosh with a certain swagger! But it is the altogether understated shades with the complex chevron pattern that really makes this British Wool range a winner. Intriguingly the neutral shades absolutely define this pattern - we think that’s pretty clever. May 2015 51

Kenburn Due to the high volumes of floorcoverings they install all over the UK, brm group member Arighi Bianchi has installed a Kenburn “Carpet Crusher” to handle the large volumes of postconsumer carpet and underlay waste they generate. Established in 1854 the furniture store Arighi Bianchi in Macclesfield is a fourth generation family run business with one of the largest carpet departments in the UK. Arighi Bianchi’s Neville Hinchliffe comments: “as members of Carpet Recycling UK we’ve been recycling our new carpet off cuts for quite a while sending the recyclable waste to Anglo Recycling”. “The wool off cuts are processed into Anglo’s range of underlay products and the man made off cuts are shredded for use as equestrian flooring”. “We’ve also been looking at a variety of disposal options for post-consumer waste as well and having read about the successes Kenburn have been making with their “carpet crusher” we arranged a meeting with Kenburn who are also members of CRUK”. “It was immediately apparent we were talking to a company who not only supplied the ideal compaction machine for carpet/underlay waste they also in addition provided the logistic advice that enabled us to dispose of our waste post-consumer carpet and underlay in the most environmentally friendly method using waste to energy. “Our post-consumer waste is now used as a fuel to power concrete kilns and in addition to diverting hundreds of tonnes a year of recyclable waste from landfill we’ve also significantly reduced our waste management costs so it’s a win win scenario. “Our customers have also been extremely enthusiastic regarding our recycling initiatives and are more than happy to pay a premium cost to have their carpet and underlay waste recycled”. Simon Wells Kenburn’s Northern Sales Manager adds, “Kenburn can visit your premises anywhere in the UK and with a brief waste survey can offer free impartial advice on the financial and environmental benefits of installing a Kenburn “Carpet Crusher”. Carpet Recycling UK Carpet Recycling UK will again be providing advice for retailers on sustainable disposal routes for carpet fitting waste and uplifted post-consumer carpets at the 2015 Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show in Solihull. Visitors to CRUK’s stand at the Cranmore Park event can find out how clean installation waste take-back schemes and the rising numbers of outlets processing carpet waste for new uses offer many business benefits for retailers. The industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet offers retailers opportunities to enhance their business and green credentials, as well as potentially save on disposal costs, by diverting waste material from landfill. “In less than ten years we have created a nationwide network of recyclers and outlets that provide genuine and sustainable alternative disposal routes for waste carpet,” comments CRUK Director, Laurance Bird. “This is both good news for the sector and good news for the environment. “Consumers feel better knowing their waste carpet is diverted from landfill, while retailers can reduce the frequency of their general waste collections, as uplifted and fitting waste material can be recycled into new products.” Last year, a record-breaking 113,000 tonnes of carpet were reused, recycled or recovered for energy, representing a landfill diversion rate of 28%. CRUK’s new target is 60% diversion from landfill by 2020. Some 400,000 tonnes of carpet waste arises each year in the UK. T 0161 440 8325
