Summer shades
With a seasonal colour palette and an abstract floral motif, Rosa is the perfect summery feel and one of the new SS18 designs from the Inspired by V&A collection by Flair Rugs.
From the V&A’s collection of over 2.1million objects, Flair Rugs has taken the work of French artist Edouard Benedictus as the inspiration for Rosa. The artist was famous for his explorations of floral wallpapers and fabrics of the time and Rosa sees Flair turn to his folio of 1924, Variations, playing on his magnification of detail with a grand-scale interpretation. By altering the proportions of the original design and introducing a colour palette relevant to today’s home, Flair translates something historic into a fresh feeling design that’s entirely connected with modern life. Sinead Donohoe, head of marketing, Flair Rugs: “Our SS18 Inspired by V&A launches continue our exploration of work by significant figures in the Art Deco movement and early 20th Century art. Alongside more typical geometric forms of the period and the mythical representations in Chinese culture, Rosa is a gorgeous quality that is perfect for creating a summery feel, while its foundation in the history of culture ensures permanency of the design.” Hand-tufted in India from 100% wool, Rosa is part of the Luxmi collection; a celebration of Flair’s family heritage and the artistry of rug making in premium qualities made with the finest materials. Available exclusively to Flair Rugs stockists, Luxmi is presented in a striking brochure and through a consumer-focused website, luxmirugs.com. The rug is available in three standard sizes of 120 x 170cm, 160 x 230cm and 200 x 290cm. With these latest SS18 launches, the Inspired by V&A collection now features eight designs inspired by the world’s leading museum of art and design. Good Homes Roomsets, media room featuring Kaleidoscope by Karndean Designflooring, Pyramid KAL01
Building for growth
Karndean Designflooring, partnered with Good Homes magazine for a third consecutive year to bring three inspiring roomsets to life for home decorators visiting the Ideal Home Show at Olympia, London (17th march – 2nd April). Styled by Good Homes style editor Jessica Taverner and esteemed UK interior stylist Kate Mcphee, the roomsets featured transformative decorating ideas, on trend colour schemes, and must have furniture and accessories. It was the perfect opportunity for visitors to see Karndean flooring in a life-like setting and visualise how it can fit with existing décor and lifestyles. “The three roomsets showcasing Karndean – a slow trend living room, multipurpose media room, and a dark intensity kitchen – demonstrated the versatility of our floors and its suitability for various rooms in the home,” commented Stella Coyle, national retail sales manager of Karndean Designflooring. In response to the popularity of Scandinavian inspired interiors, the slow living room incorporated elements of Hygge and Lagom, trends that are all about simplicity, natural qualities, and comfort. Karndean’s Korlok Warm Ash, with its homely mid tone colour and grain details, was used to complement the calming pastel scheme. The media room was a modular, multifunctional space to accommodate both the latest technology and quality family time. Looking for a practical, yet modern and exciting floor pattern, Good Homes opted for Karndean’s Kaleidoscope Pyramid design with its three bold, contrasting statement hues. The dark intensity kitchen featured the burnished stone effect of Karndean’s Opus Forma against an all-black kitchen and glossy appliances, with rose gold accessories. Right tack for tiles
F. Ball and Co. Ltd., has launched a new, improved version of its popular Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier.
Styccobond F41 is a solvent-free, acrylic adhesive, which is designed to provide a permanently tacky film to prevent ‘loose-lay’ carpet tiles from moving laterally under normal traffic, whilst allowing individual tiles to be quickly removed and replaced if they become damaged or worn. After extensive research and development, the adhesive has been reformulated to provide improved coverage capabilities. Additional benefits include a faster drying time and increased tack – whilst still allowing carpet tiles to be lifted easily when required. Flooring contractors will also notice that F41 is now significantly easier to apply as a result of reduced viscosity. Styccobond F41 can be used for securing a wide range of dimensionally stable ‘flat lay’ carpet tiles backed with bitumen/felt, non-woven fabric, PVC and other polymer backings. It can be applied over Stopgap levelling compounds, Stopgap waterproof surface membranes and a wide range of absorbent and non-absorbent subfloors, including structurally sound, smooth and dry concrete, sand/cement screed, plywood, raised access flooring panels and terrazzo. It is also approved for use in marine flooring installations and is suitable for use over normal under floor heating systems. The product has been certified EMICODE EC1 Plus. Flooring contractors can purchase Styccobond F41 in 5L and 25L bottles as well as in a 15L rectangular bucket – for ease of application. All containers are resealable for future use. T 01583 361 633

Contract business tops £1bn
After achieving strong growth of 4% in 2015, growth rates in the contract floorcoverings market were slightly disappointing in 2016 and 2017. A number of factors had a negative impact on the market, including increasing inflation towards the end of the period and adverse currency movements as an indirect result of the Brexit vote, affecting imports. However, despite reduced growth rates, the value of the contract flooring market exceeded £1bn in 2017. The contract sector accounts for around half of the total floorcoverings market, and its share continues to increase.
There has been only modest change to the product mix in this sector in recent years. Carpet has decreased in share marginally, mainly reflecting a growth in vinyl flooring, which is now the second largest product group. The growth of vinyl has been underpinned by the increased specification of safety flooring and the more recent trend for luxury vinyl tiles to be installed in the retail and office sectors. The medium-term outlook is for similarly modest changes to the product mix, with carpet expected to continue to lose share marginally to vinyl products and floor tiles in the period to 2022. UK manufacturers remain under pressure from imports, particularly from the larger overseas floorcoverings groups, who increasingly cover several types of floorcoverings products. However, going forward UK manufacturers should gain some competitive advantage from the increased cost of imported products, although that factor will increase the cost of any raw materials they import themselves.

NEW 2018 Look out for Aquilla, Dorado, Indus Associated Weavers Sales: 01422 431100 Email: salesuk@awe.be
Flower on Flooring Seeing the wood and stone for the trees This has been made possible by its ultramodern energy-efficient factory, utilising state-of-the-art cut- and embossed-in register techniques to ensure high quality products.
“We’ll be unveiling new designs across our Select, Transform and Impress collections at a number of shows throughout the year,” says mr Bigland.
Xylo Flooring says its Dynamic vinyl range was inspired by the natural featuring of wood and more styles and colours will continue to be added throughout the year.
The range is resistant to scratches, stains, fading and denting and with a 30-year Residential LifeTime Guarantee and a 10-year Commercial LifeTime Guarantee it makes Xylo’s Dynamic range an “obvious choice”, the company states.
Dynamic has been designed for commercial or residential installations as it is attractive yet hardwearing; maintaining its pristine matt oiled look for its length of life and therefore suitable for rental properties, restaurants, shops and other settings.
Urban Spotted Gum by Karndean
“More home decorators are looking for contemporary and characterful wood and stone designs when selecting luxury vinyl tiles”
Vinyl flooring continues to expand their share of the UK flooring market and suppliers are keen to sustain this momentum through developing their product portfolio.
Wood and stone decors dominate the sector so manufacturers are working hard to differentiate their designs and add realism in order to stand out from the crowd and attract the more discerning consumers.
Karndean Designflooring national retail sales manager Stella Coyle says: “more home decorators are looking for contemporary and characterful wood and stone designs when selecting luxury vinyl tiles (LVT). Scandinavian, grey and natural oak designs are popular in modern homes, and that’s why we’ve introduced 15 new contemporary designs to our Knight Tile collection including eight woods, three stones and four exclusive smaller plank designs. “There is an array of light, neutral oak designs, statement slates, spotted gum and Scandinavian pine designs – all inspired by real wood and stone sourced by our in-house product designers. With the trend to match ‘room to room’ in separate rooms, open plan spaces and broken living areas set to continue, we’ve introduced a new 18in x 3in small plank design, available in Scandinavian and oak designs. “It means home decorators can opt for a smaller plank design in herringbone or block designs against our matching 36in x 6in full length plank for extra visual impact.”
Moduleo UK and Eire managing director David Bigland says the success of zoning in 2017 inspired the creation of bespoke flooring patterns in designated areas using moduleo moods. Statement flooring is now expected to develop further throughout 2018. “People have become bolder in their flooring choices and we’ve met this demand with the extension of our Impress collection, introducing a number of abstract designs. We’re looking to build on this with the introduction of styles such as Terrazzo and Cemetine, as part of a 30% increase in our product portfolio,” he says.
30 May 2018
“It is also easy and economical to lay using the Valinge 2G Click System and with this in mind we are also offering a keen commercial discount for larger projects where we find our clients are using Dynamic,” the company concludes.
Avenue product manager maaike Dickx says: “There is no doubt that wood looks are incredibly popular in cushion vinyl flooring and they remain a major focus for product development. For 2018, we’ve developed a brand-new technology that improves realism of our wood designs with V-groove.”
The deep embossed effect enhances the definition of plank edges to give an appearance closer to real wood planks, marking a “big step forward” for options that include several new decors in the company’s Ultimate Timber PU collection.
“V-groove combines perfectly with our Natural Look & Feel surface for a cushion vinyl floor that’s impressively authentic. Add in Superguard PU for easier maintenance and brand-new decors featuring V-groove, such as Jacobsen, Cartier, Edgewood and Cimarron; and Ultimate Timber PU is ready to bring home the latest in fashionable, ontrend wood looks with the ease of cushion vinyl flooring – a winning combination,” says ms Dickx.

The future of retail Can flooring change alongside consumer buying habits?
Retail has had a tough start to 2018 with Carpetright the latest in a long line of high street brands that are reducing their property portfolio. Footfall has also just recorded its worst month across the country for several years..
EarthWerk’s Wood Classic & Wood Classic Plus
“There is no doubt that wood looks are incredibly popular in cushion vinyl flooring and they remain a major focus for product development.” EarthWerks states that its Wood Classic and Wood Classic Plus are “outright triumphs” in “true to life” embossing and sold worldwide.
Since 2002, its portfolio of registered embossed planks has continued to expand, with the two designs delivering “best in class” performance due to a combination of “excellent design, sophisticated colours and authentic texture,” the company says.
EarthWerks has remained at the forefront of luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) for almost four decades, focussing exclusively on natural patterns, vibrant organic colours and “true to nature” registered embossing. Diversity, excellence in design and proven quality are the main focus of its activities, including best design choice combined with a high standard of quality and reliability.
“With industry leading wear warranties, EarthWerks LVF can be installed in both residential and commercial locations secure in the knowledge that it will keep looking good for a very long time,” the company concludes.
Wineo states that its wineo 800 collection was developed with the help of trend scouts to provide “plenty of impressive new inspirations”. It comes in attractive wood and stone designs, as well as unique tiles in a variety of formats and the collection is rounded off by creative craft elements such as mosaic and slim planks.
The company further explains that the collection offers 42 innovative designs for gluing (2.5mm) or clicking (5mm), in a total of eight different formats.
“With a wear layer of 0.55mm, wineo 800 is a premium design covering and is therefore ideal for commercial property and discerning private customers,” the company explains.

How do you think the changing retail landscape is going to effect flooring? Do the internet sellers compromise the “level playing field” for retailers and are manufacturers and suppliers behaving fairly? News from New Scandi Pine, European Oak and Slate designs unveiled as part of Karndean Designflooring’s new look Knight Tile The UK’s market leader in luxury vinyl flooring Karndean Designflooring is introducing 15 new contemporary designs to its popular Knight Tile collection including eight woods, three stones and four exclusive smaller plank designs. As well as expanding its modern oak offering with popular light, neutral tones and statement slates, it is the first time the collection will feature Spotted Gum and Scandinavian Pine designs. Inspired by Northern Scandinavian Pine, all three designs – Natural Scandi Pine, Grey Scandi Pine and Washed Scandi Pine – feature the natural slow growing properties and tight grain found in this type of natural wood. Interestingly, Karndean’s in-house product designers also hand selected complementary flowery boards from the same region to create a more balanced variation of planks. Whereas Natural Scandi Pine offers a true likeness of the original design, typical of on-trend Scandinavian interiors, Grey Scandi Pine enhances the darker grain patterns, creating a twist on the classic neutral look, and Washed Scandi Pine brings a white washed effect for a crisp, fresh finish.
With the growing trend to match designs ‘room to room’ in separate rooms, open plan spaces and broken living areas set to continue, Knight Tile also welcomes Washed Scandi Pine, Grey Limed Oak, Pale Limed Oak and Lime Washed Oak in a new 18” x 3” small plank design. The new plank size can be perfectly placed alongside the matching 36” x 6” full length plank and laid in an on-trend herringbone or block design to bring a sense of style and interest to any room. “We’re thrilled to be updating our Knight Tile collection with new contemporary and characterful wood and stone options” explains Stella Coyle, national retail sales manager of Karndean Designflooring. She said: “Being our entry collection, Knight Tile is extremely versatile and popular with first time buyers, young families and multigeneration homes to name but a few. It’s modern and allows home decorators to take on latest trends including Scandi, industrial and country style. “Having the option to introduce a smaller plank design in a herringbone or block designs against our matching full length plank adds a new visual element for home decorators to consider. For those looking for stone options, Knight Tile features our larger 18” x 12” stone options in three new slate designs. “It’s a great opportunity for our network of independent retailers to look to increase sales by introducing a newly refreshed Knight Tile collection, and our retail business managers will be updating existing Point of Sale (POS) from May 2018.” With a lifetime residential guarantee, Karndean’s new look Knight Tile collection now features 22 woods, four small woods and 16 stone designs.

Looking to create something unique and distinctive away from the traditional Australian spotted gum wood, Karndean cleverly opted to combine this design in its raw form with the Northern European and North American grey tones of choice.
The result is a modern twist on a traditional design, ideal for home decorators looking for a contemporary grey.

Cool concrete for care
Expona Flow sheet vinyl flooring from Polyflor was recently installed at the new NGS macmillan Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, a pioneering centre for people affected by cancer.
Expona Flow PUR vinyl flooring in the Light Grey Concrete and Cool Concrete shades was installed throughout The NGS Macmillan Unit by Active Flooring in the reception area, circulation areas, corridors, staircases and wards. 2000 PUR homogeneous sheet vinyl flooring in Stream was also used for the staff kitchenette area. Macmillan Cancer Support has been working in partnership with Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to build the new cancer centre which offers vital treatment, care and support to cancer patients. £2.5 million of the £9 million it cost to create the centre was raised by cancer charity Macmillan, with a £1.5 million donation from the National Garden Scheme. Ian Summers, Estates Project Engineer at Chesterfield Royal Hospital commented, ”The Expona Flow concrete designs give a sophisticated, modern look to the new unit that is far removed from the clinical look of traditional hospitals. Since we opened the unit, we’ve had some great feedback on the interior design scheme from patients, staff and visitors.” Available in a 2 metre wide format with a 2mm gauge and 0.7mm wear layer, the UK manufactured Expona Flow PUR flooring collection includes 50 high performance wood, stone and abstract designs. Ideal for a range of heavy commercial environments where high footfall levels are to be expected, Expona Flow PUR is enhanced with Polyflor’s robust polyurethane reinforcement which is cross linked and UV cured for a simple polish-free maintenance regime and superior cleaning benefits. Strong, silent type
Itec Contract Floors has unveiled the new look Silento Timber collection of sheet vinyl flooring made with a special acoustic foam backing that reduces impact sound by 18dB. Already a favourite in student accommodation, education and social housing, the refreshed wood decors keep the collection relevant for the latest interior trends.
Showing a stronger suite of grey woods with the introduction of Toronto T11 and Calais T39, joining the existing Botticelli T93, Silento Timber is more versatile than ever before whilst also retaining the classic oak looks that have made it a hit. With a space-enhancing 20cm wide plank in the dramatic design Calais, Silento Timber is a collection ready for any project requiring a welcoming and relaxing feel with the best in ease of maintenance, sounddeadening and durability.
Counter culture
Silentflor vinyl sheet flooring from Polyflor’s collection of acoustic floor coverings was chosen for the interior design scheme of a brand new burger restaurant, The Counter Custom Burgers at The Quay in Glasgow.
The Counter is a Los Angeles based burger restaurant franchise and Glasgow is its first location in the UK. Approximately 220m² of heavy commercial Silentflor flooring in Light Industrial Concrete (pictured above) was fitted in the front of house areas of the restaurant which can seat up to 100 covers. Another 100m² of Polysafe Standard safety flooring with sustainable slip resistance was also used for the back of house kitchen and staff zones. Made in the UK, the Silentflor range includes 36 stunning designs in a 3.7mm gauge and 0.65mm wear layer format. The collection’s 8 contemporary concrete and 12 abstract designs have been specifically developed to achieve a modern on-trend look. Silentflor is a robust, beautifully designed collection that achieves 19dB impact sound reduction and has been expertly created for a wide range of commercial interiors, such as installations in the retail and leisure sectors. The product’s acoustic layer provides warmth and cushioning underfoot as well as reducing the effects of impact sound travelling through a building. T 0161 767 1111

All floors within the collection are also equipped with T-emboss, a new mechanical emboss that makes the striking wood effects more authentic through sharper clarity and a better matt look with less light reflectance. With reduced surface texture and combined with Hyperguard+, T-emboss also makes cleaning easier, provides improved stain and slip properties and gives excellent abrasion performance. With Hyperguard+, all floors in the Silento Timber collection are protected from dirt and stains and remain easy to maintain throughout their lifetime, requiring no specialist care. The permanent polyurethane treatment makes Silento Timber ideal when specialist cleaning schedules and intensive maintenance are not regularly achievable. Silento Timber achieves a Class 33 Heavy Commercial use rating, giving suitability for demanding public areas such as corridors or receptions where two and four-metre width options can help to minimise waste or reduce seams respectively. With Invisiweld, the wood-look integrity of the Silento Timber collection can also be enhanced with a flush seam that’s also stronger and thereby less prone to failure than traditional hot weld. NEWS Creative connections
The redesigned Domotex – with its easy-to-navigate site and hall layouts plus the eye-catching “Framing Trends” showcase – has been warmly embraced by the market and is now entering its second season.
The new lead theme has been announced, and registrations for Domotex 2019 are already pouring in, with more than half of the available space already booked. As such, Domotex is living up to its reputation as the place to be for floor covering professionals from around the globe. As a networking hub, Domotex is ideal for meeting up with one’s international clientele while at the same time generating scores of promising new leads. The show’s clusters display categories in an optimal way so attendees can quickly find everything of interest to them. The event’s lead theme puts the spotlight on innovation and a sweeping trend affecting the entire industry. The lead theme of the upcoming Domotex 2019 is “Create’N’Connect” which refers to today’s connectivity megatrend. Connectivity is affecting every aspect of how we live, work and interact. Technology and digital change are accelerating this development, and new cultural patterns and habits are manifesting themselves in new approaches to how things are designed. The theme of “connectedness" also has strong symbolic and emotional aspects. With their numerous design options, floors play an important role here: They provide the very foundation for the rooms in which we live and work. We are in constant contact with floors and flooring, and are consciously or subliminally always aware of what is beneath our feet. Floors are integral design elements. They inspire us, give us orientation and set the stage for human interaction.
Upper decks
marine-certified floor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used to deliver a high performance refurbishment for a number of deck areas on one of P&O’s passenger and cargo ships. The work was carried out while the ship was in dry dock in Gdansk, Poland by Hull-based Total Flooring.
All of the F. Ball products used on project are Marine Certified Tested to the standards of the International Marine Organisation and approved for use in marine floor installations Having prepared the deck floors, where necessary, with Stopgap 1200 Pro floor levelling compound, contractors installed a combination of Tarkett iQ Granit vinyl, Polyflor Voyager vinyl planks, and heavy contract broadloom carpet. Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive adhesive was used to install the vinyl floorcoverings. Tarkett iQ Granit vinyl was installed in the main corridors of the drivers’ deck, and in the crew’s mess. Polyflor Voyager vinyl planks were installed in one of the ship’s restaurants. The carpet was installed in the ship’s brasserie restaurant and the crew and drivers’ bars using Styccobond F3 water based rubber/resin flooring adhesive and Styccobond F40 High Tack adhesive as part of a dual bond system. In this application it was used to create a peelable bond between the underlay and the subfloor, so that the underlay can be removed in the future without damaging the subfloor. Styccobond F3 was then used to adhere the carpet to the underlay. This adhesive has excellent wet grab with an early build up of strength. It can be used for securing fibre bonded carpets, hessian, felt, secondary latex and rubber foam backed carpets and cork tiles up to 3.2mm thick. T 01538 361 633

A variety of Polysafe safety flooring and Expona luxury vinyl tiles from commercial vinyl flooring specialist Polyflor were recently used to complete the construction of Needham House in Devizes, Wiltshire. Needham House is a housing development of extra care apartments which allow older people to live independently in their own homes with on-site care and support.
Over 2000m² of Polyflor vinyl flooring was installed by Bristol based contractors English County Contracts Ltd in the 47 self-contained apartments and communal areas. Expona Commercial PUR luxury vinyl tiles in the Light Classic Oak design (pictured left) were selected for the building entrance and lobby areas, the dining hall, staircases, circulation areas and corridors between the apartments. The dining hall is a communal space used as a restaurant by residents, as well as acting as a venue for social activities and events. The Expona Commercial collection features wood, stone and abstract effects which are ideal for interior spaces in housing, healthcare and other commercial sectors where there is likely to be a high level of foot traffic. Polysafe Wood fx PUR safety flooring in Classic Oak was installed inside each of the apartments to provide sustainable wet slip resistance in the fully fitted kitchens. Also used in activity rooms and treatment rooms on site, Polysafe Wood fx is a hard wearing sheet vinyl flooring which combines the authentic reproduction of wood with virtually invisible aggregates to provide traction for underfoot safety without compromising the high clarity look of the floor. Another safety flooring product, Polysafe Verona PUR in the Café Noir shade, was used to create safe working environments for staff in the kitchen and servery areas attached to the dining hall, store rooms, cleaner’s cupboards and staff bathrooms. Bricks beat clicks for flooring
New research shows the nation turns to independent flooring retailers over e-zines, glossy home interest titles or social media channels for trusted advice and interiors inspiration.
Over half (52%) of 1,000 homeowners surveyed by OnePoll on behalf of Dewsbury-based wool spinner, Lawton Yarns, said they were most likely to seek out smaller, specialist stores to help inform their purchasing decisions. What’s more, 43% consider these independent outlets a primary source for home furnishing ideas. National showrooms were the second port of call with 28% visiting the better known brands while in buying mode. Just over a quarter (26%) would revert to carpet manufacturers’ websites.
“It’s clear consumers largely depend on ‘bricks’ over ‘clicks’ when they’re in flooring purchasing mode”
“It’s clear consumers largely depend on ‘bricks’ over ‘clicks’ when they’re in flooring purchasing mode,” says Tim Kay of Lawton Yarns. “While that came as somewhat of a surprise, what was most telling to us, was the fact that there was very little variation between how younger age groups answered compared to older generations. “We fully expected to see some variation - particularly on those questions pertaining to trends - be it what’s currently perceived desirable or sources of inspiration. But the statistics indicate widespread consensus when it comes to flooring preferences and where homeowners find support for a purchase that typically takes place only once every eight to 10 years.” Although the results reveal some degree of confusion about the pros and cons of different flooring types, in general, most people have opted for carpet (67%) over hard flooring in their homes. When it comes to choosing which carpet, however, the uncertainty creeps in when deciding between a wool or wool-rich blend versus a synthetic make-up. Nearly a third (32%) of respondents reported that they did not know which carpet composition they prefer and there was a lack of knowledge on the full breadth of wool’s key performance benefits. For example, 60% of homeowners were unable to decipher which floor covering is the most fire retardant and 40% were unsure which material would be most resistant to the ‘flattening’ effect seen in high traffic areas over time. Both factors being important selling points for the wool camp. “The impetus behind the research was to really understand what drives consumers in determining what they put down in their homes,” adds Kay. “Cost? Environmental concerns? Safety? Ease of maintenance? We were second guessing. Now, armed with these insights, we strongly believe that we can support the manufacturers and all-important retailers in getting the ‘buy wool’ message across. The time is right to hone in on the mood of the moment and regain rightful market share for nature’s wonder material.” Despite the shown lack of understanding around the advantages of wool, 28% stated they would choose a pure wool carpet compared to the 7% favouring entirely synthetic products. Furthermore, though wool is often associated with artisan crafts and celebrated for its traditional heritage, man-made carpets were considered far more unfashionable.
Landlords key to Carpetright deal Carpetright shareholders will be asked to support the company’s rescue plan on April 30 to protect many more stores following the announcement earlier this month of 92 site closures with a loss of 300 jobs.
Landlords are key to the deal as Carpetright is looking for “fundamental restructuring” of its property portfolio which affects an additional 113 stores where the company is looking for reductions in rental costs and revised lease terms. Carpetright boss Wilf Walsh said: “These tough but necessary actions will enable us to address the burden of a legacy UK property estate consisting of too many poorly located stores on unsustainable rents and are essential if we are to restore our profitability and deliver a successful turnaround.” The company which started the year with over 400 stores has been working closely with landlords’ organisation the British Property Federation (BPF) to find a way forward. Though landlords will vote individually, the BPF said Carpetright “have demonstrated best practice, constructively engaging with the BPF early in the process and ensuring landlords' interests have been properly taken into account.” After two profit warnings already this year, the company's announcement was not unexpected. Breaking the bad news, Mr Walsh commented: “It appears as if consumers have tightened their belts in terms of spending disposable income.” But while underperforming sites have dragged the company down, the company’s investment in recent years has paid off with better performance in those stores than have been overhauled and the proposed deal with landlords under a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) will build on this success. Carpetright told shareholders: “Completion of the CVA and equity financing will enable us to establish an appropriately-sized estate of modernised stores, on economic rents, complemented with a compelling online offer, enabling Carpetright to address the competitive threat from a position of strength.” Encouraging news from elsewhere in the flooring market saw Victoria PLC announced that their results for the year ended 31 March 2018 were likely to be ahead of market expectations.
And the GfK’s Consumer Confidence survey showed some improvement with their Major Purchase Index up from zero to +2. “It’s still a little early to be talking about green-shoots,” says GfK’s Joe Staton,”but this is definitely a movement in the right direction. Consumers are feeling a tiny spring in their step.”
But retail footfall took a dive around Easter. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) reported in its Springboard Footfall Monitor that High Streets saw a decline of 8.6% while retail parks were down 1.8% – the steepest drop since 2010. Bad weather took some of the blame but the BRC’s Helen Dickinson commented: “whilst the prolonged period of bad weather has had an impact on shoppers visiting the high street, we are seeing a longer term trend of reduced footfall which highlights that shoppers face more choice in terms of how, where and when they shop.”

The agenda setter for the season The Solihull showcase of all that’s fashionable in flooring opens on May 15 and 16 as more than 60 top companies gather to meet their buying group customers.
May 15/16 Cranmore Park Solihull
The BGNFS - The Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show - is seen as an essential event for many retailers as the latest products are shown off in time for the Summer and Autumn buying season. All the major UK buying groups are participating together in this members-only event - ACG, BRM, Flooring One, Greendale, Metro Carpet1st and SMG.
“It’s absolutely imperative that any retailer that is part of a flooring buying group pays a visit to the show”
Mandy Powell of Flooring One says: “As the show is exclusive to members of a flooring buying group, this means that supplier’s representatives can spend valuable time talking about new products and any new initiatives. I highly recommend that all members of any flooring buying group attend the show and try and visit as many of the exhibitors as possible. “The suppliers invest a lot of time and money exhibiting at this show and they really look forward to spending valuable time with all buying group retailers and recognise that retailers give up their valuable time out of their business to attend this event. The show is in a great central location in Solihull with free parking, free lunch and refreshments.” There are details on the BGNFS website - don’t forget to pre-register as only buying group members are able to attend: www.bgnfs.co.uk

Emphasis on innovation Lano With developments throughout its portfolio, from the value-focused Essenz collection right up to premium styles in X-Collection, the Belgian manufacturer will demonstrate why it continues to be one of the flooring industry’s most highly-regarded carpet manufacturers. The premium X-Collection will be shown with significant revisions in new styles and colour updates to existing ranges. Oasis, Mayfair Velvet and Satine will be refreshed with colour palettes inspired by the latest home interior trends, while a new-look Bamboo Touch and Bamboo Velvet are introduced. Two new polyamide ranges offering a vogue silk look will also be shown; Pleasure a luxurious 5/64” velvet and Serenity, a traditional fine 1/10th gauge Saxony style. The newest brand for the manufacturer, Halcyon, already featuring the super-soft polypropylene of Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe, will be shown with the brand-new Pashmina, the first solution-dyed polyester to come from Lano. With lasting colour and stain-resistance, super-soft Pashmina will be available in a suite of timeless tones. Of course, no show appearance would be complete without updates from the Essenz collection of value engineered polypropylene carpets, including some of the manufacturer’s most enduring ranges. Updates for the BGNFS include new colours in the popular Pembridge Heathers and Fairfield Creations. T 00800 5266 5266 www.lano.com

Iconic rugs Louis de Poortere Showcased in Solihull will be rugs from Louis de Poortere’s partnership with British design house, Romo. Louis de Poortere has worked with the company to turn some of its most iconic wallpaper and fabric designs into exquisite handtufted or flatweave rugs in colourways for today’s homes. The eyecatching collection includes on-trend geometrics, tribal patterns and subtle abstract designs. As part of the collaboration, Louis de Poortere has also teamed with the designers from British brand Villa Nova, renowned for creating stylish and innovative fabrics, wallcoverings and accessories for modern living. The collection includes bright botanicals, bold geometrics and abstract patterns; crafted in hand-tufted or flatweave, and carefully designed to coordinate with Villa Nova’s fabrics, wallcoverings and cushions. Louis de Poortere’s stand will also show the brand’s latest in-house collections, including the lauded Antiquarian range, updates to Made Men and new Atlantic Streaks. Centred around three iconic Louis de Poortere library designs in Hedschlu, Heriz and Bakthiari, the Antiquarian collection reimagines and reworks the styles for today’s homes. Modern cotton flatweaves with a hand-distressed effect for an authentic worn look, the rugs set Antiquarian apart as an exceptional machine-made collection. Alongside Antiquarian, visitors will be able to see the latest design to join Mad Men, inspired by the world below the surface. A mix of straight and broken lines, of matt and shining yarns, of smooth and ragged pencil strokes; The Cracks is the latest design from the collection and comes in colourways of Dark Pine, Deep Mine and Abyss Blue. Next to that, there will also be a new design in the established Atlantic series, The Streak. Representing the ripples and streaks in the sandy shores of New Jersey and Long Island, as if they were abstract paintings, it’s a stylish rug in five colourways. Alan Russell, sales director, comments: “We’re excited to bring so many great developments to members of the country’s leading buying groups at this year’s show. 2017 was a strong year in terms of product development and our collaboration with Romo and Villa Nova helps to strengthen perceptions of our brand. Combined, our efforts are making the Louis de Poortere name an even more attractive proposition for retailers and homeowners in 2018.” T 01505 615663 www.louisdepoortere.com 44 May 2018

Pitching for pattern Fells Fells Carpets are passionate about pattern and its mission is to encourage retailers to be bold about their in-store presentations. “Pattern isn’t for eveyone but to attract those consumers who are looking for something different, unique and inspiring, retailers need to be confident about pitching pattern,” says Fell’s Carl Cummings. The units create a focal point in any store and enhance the sense of design-led flooring style, away from the “me-too” banks of beige and greys that may dominant the rest of the store. Business advantage Carpet Recycling UK Carpet Recycling UK will be offering recycling advice and encouraging more retailers to start carpet takeback schemes at the 2018 Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show. “Clean installation waste takeback schemes, alongside the growth in facilities processing carpet waste for new uses, offer many business advantages for retailers,” says Laurance Bird, CRUK Director. “Visitors to our stand can learn how these schemes contribute to reduced disposal costs for retailers and help them to promote sustainability initiatives to their customers.” The industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet assists retailers with setting up takeback schemes that offer economic and environmental benefits in diverting carpet waste from landfill. Director Stewart Cullingford of Cullingford Carpets and Interiors can testify to CRUK’s help, having recycled more than 220 tonnes of carpet and underlay since becoming a member in July 2015 and installing a baler. He comments: “Our takeback scheme enables us to achieve the aims of our environmental policy to increase the amount we recycle. It also sets us apart from other carpet retailers in the area.” CRUK member The Carpet Bureau provides an efficient recycling service for several retailers in SW London. Material is consolidated on site, baled and transported in full lorry loads for use as an alternative fuel for cement kilns. Director Bryan Robison says their service ‘benefits everyone, especially smaller companies’. T 0161 440 8325 www.carpetrecyclinguk.com 52 May 2018

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Crumb
Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
PU foam
Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com
Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).
Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 58
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 60
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

F L O O R I N G FAC T S H E E T WOOL FIBRE
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain. British wool is bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to a carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 Wool Rich – Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
Benefits of Wool Carpet 1. Practical
4. Internal Environment
Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air.
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
2. Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency.
Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.
Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production.
3. Safety
Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.
Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
5. Eco/Environmental
Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.
